What do pilots do during the cruise?

Charlie Page

It's quite often said that the job of a pilot is very much like that of an anesthetist. It's pretty busy at the start and end of the operation, but in the middle it's a bit more relaxed. With the intensity of the departure complete, the atmosphere in the flight deck relaxes.

The pilots instruct the Autopilot to do the dogs work of keeping the wings level and flying the route entered into the Flight Management Computer (FMC) on the ground. Whilst one pilot is always responsible for ensuring the Autopilot is doing exactly what they expect it to do, it creates spare capacity for the crew to attend to other matters.

On a typical 10-hour flight from Los Angles to London, there's plenty to be done whilst up at 37,000 feet. It may seem like the pilots are just there for the ride, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Here's what is going on in the pointy end whilst you're trying to get some sleep.

Fuel and Time Checks

It will normally take around 30 minutes for a heavy 787 Dreamliner to climb from the runway to its initial cruising altitude. During this time, we normally do very little except concentrate on flying the aircraft and talking to ATC. Once level in the cruise, we can start to divert our attention onto other tasks. The first is to make a fuel check.

As part of our preflight procedure, we check the flight plan issued to us by the company's operations department. Not only does this gives us information as to how much fuel we will need for the entire flight, it also breaks it down into how much fuel we require at any given stage of the flight.

Photo by Orli Friedman/The Points Guy

Passing the first waypoint after the top of climb, it is the Pilot Monitoring's (PM) job to make a fuel check. They will look at the fuel system display and write down on the flight plan what the actual fuel on board is. They will also write down the time.

By comparing the amount of fuel actually in the tanks against what we need to reach our destination as per the flight plan, we can calculate how much fuel we expect to land with. The time check also enables us to see whether or not the flight is progressing as expected. Losing time may indicate that the tail winds are not as strong as expected.

Fuel and time checks are then completed every 30 minutes for the rest of the flight. By keeping a vigilant eye on the fuel we can determine if we are using fuel faster than expected. If so, we need to work out why. Quite often, it's because of stronger head winds or because ATC are keeping us at an altitude lower than our optimum. For these fairly regular cases, we always carry a certain amount of contingency fuel.

Rarely — and I mean very rarely — a discrepancy in the fuel checks may be a result of a fuel leak. In this situation, there is a regimented checklist that we must follow to ascertain if there is indeed a fuel leak. Depending on where the leak is coming from, we may have to shut an engine down. If the leak cannot be controlled, an immediate diversion is made before the situation gets any worse.

Diversion Planning

At all times of a flight, a good crew will always be thinking, "What if?" What if an engine was to fail right now? What if we develop a fuel leak? What if a passenger gets ill? They will always have a plan of action up their sleeve.

Part of this plan of action is always knowing where the most suitable diversion airport is. I use the phrase most suitable, as the closest airport may not necessarily be the best option. You'll see why shortly.

Two hours into the flight from Los Angeles to London, the aircraft is approaching Aberdeen, South Dakota.

airplane in cruise flight

Whilst Aberdeen does have an airport, we need to be sure it's somewhere that we can not only land the aircraft, but also get airborne again. The first thing we will check is the runway length. At just 2,100 meters, landing a heavy 787 would be tight. There may also issues with parking and having steps big enough to reach the door. All in all, not a great option.

Off to the left is Bismarck, North Dakota. With a 2,700-metre runway, it's a viable option, but on checking the weather, heavy snow is reported. Maybe not the best place to divert to.

A little further along the route is Minneapolis, Minnesota. It has a couple of runways over 3,000 meters long, the weather is great and the ground facilities cater for large jets like the 787. A suitable diversion airport. To aid our situational awareness, we'll put a ring around the airport on our map display.

Oceanic Clearance

The airspace over the North Atlantic is some of the busiest in the world. However, as there is no radar coverage, there is a system in place to ensure that all aircraft remain safely separated for the duration of their crossing.

To aid this flow, a number of tracks are created by ATC each day. These enable pilots to take advantage of the most favorable winds going eastbound and avoid the strong headwinds going westbound. As there are hundreds of aircraft crossing the Atlantic each day, they must not only be separated laterally, but also vertically. Normally in 1,000-foot increments.

airplane in cruise flight

As the pilots near the entry point to the oceanic track, they request a clearance from ATC to fly at their chosen altitude and speed. These requests are collated by ATC and a clearance is issued to each flight.

On receipt of the clearance, both pilots must then stringently check that the route, altitude and speed that the aircraft has been programmed to fly matches the clearance. If there are any changes, normally to the altitude or speed, corrections must be made.

On rare occasions there is a bottle neck on one of the tracks, and a re-clearance onto another track may be made. This involves some serious workload to accurately change the route in the Flight Management Computer and, once again, check for any errors.

A major part of long-haul flying is managing tiredness . Some flights can be more than 17 hours long, so ensuring that we perform at our best during the most critical stage of the flight — landing — is of utmost importance.

To help us achieve this, sleep is a major part of the flight. On the longer flights, there will be one and sometimes two extra pilots. This enables us to take it in turns to get some shut eye.

That said, sleeping in the cabin is far from ideal. It's often noisy with the cabin service, sometimes too hot and normally too bright to get any quality rest. Fortunately, most long-haul aircraft have a dedicated area where the crew can rest.

airplane in cruise flight

On the 787 Dreamliner, the Overhead Flight Crew Rest is located above first class. Accessed by a secret door, it gives way to two beds, which are furnished with anything from a blanket to first-class bedding, depending on the airline.

The isolation of the OFCR means that it is quiet, dark and has the facility to control the temperature. All in all, it makes for a great place to get some quality sleep in preparation for landing.

Avoiding Weather

As mentioned before, the Autopilot is great for keeping the wings level but will only do what the pilots instruct it to do. This normally involves following the planned route. This is fine for the most part, but when there are thunderstorms ahead, the pilots need to take action.

As commercial pilots, our main role is to keep you the passenger safe and comfortable. Staying clear of thunderstorms is part of this remit. Most, if not all, passenger aircraft have a weather radar system. This sends out electronic pulses which bounce back off water droplets (clouds) ahead. The system then picks these return signals up and displays them on our screens.

airplane in cruise flight

Using our theoretical knowledge and experience, we then have to decide on the best route to keep us clear of the weather. This may just be a small jink left or right to avoid an isolated storm cell. If we can, we'll always try to avoid flying downwind of a thunderstorm. As the wind whips around the cell, it can create turbulence in this downwind area.

However, in equatorial areas, there can be bands of thunderstorms hundreds of miles wide. With these clouds often reaching 50,000 feet, going over the top is not an option. The only course of action is to pick a route around them.

As part of the preflight briefing, we will study the weather charts to see if this eventuality is likely. If so, we will carry extra fuel to allow us to safely deviate around the storms, even if it's by adding hundreds of miles to the route.

Cruise Climbs

In my previous article on fuel , I explained that a long-haul aircraft may depart with around 70 tonnes of fuel in its tanks. When the flight takes off, there is an optimum altitude at which the aircraft will fly for its weight.

As the flight progresses, fuel is burned by the engines, which reduces the weight of the aircraft. As the fuel on board reduces, the lift available becomes greater than the weight , so the aircraft is able to climb to altitudes where the engines are more efficient.

So, as the aircraft gets lighter, we can request from ATC that we climb to a higher altitude. This is why on a long flight you may start at 35,000 feet, a few hours later climb to 37,000 feet and then some hours later climb to 39,000 feet.

Arrival Planning

As the flight nears the destination, it's time for the pilots to start thinking about the arrival. The latest weather conditions are obtained, including the runway in use and the type of approach which the crew can expect to fly.

The crew will perform a landing distance calculation for the given conditions, taking into consideration the wind speed and direction, temperature, runway length and how slippery the runway may be. Once satisfied that there is enough distance to stop safely, they will carry out an approach brief.

airplane in cruise flight

The aim of the brief is to ensure that all pilots in the flight deck for landing understand how they plan to fly the approach and landing. We will discuss the main threats, often referred to as the '6 Ts' – Terrain, Thunderstorms, Track miles, Tail winds, Traffic and aTc.

We will identify how any of these factors could cause problems during the approach and then come up with a plan on how we will deal with them. By planning ahead, we avoid being surprised and making poor decisions in the heat of the moment.

Bottom Line

Contrary to popular belief, pilots don't just sit there with their feet up during the cruise as the Autopilot does all the work. Whilst the workload is not as intense as during takeoff and landing, there is still plenty to be done.

Keeping tabs on the fuel status is a core part of the cruise workload. Keeping a good situational awareness of suitable airports around the aircraft is also extremely important. As these pass behind on the route, new ones must constantly be updated.

Whilst the cruise isn't as busy as takeoff and landing, there's still plenty to be done to ensure the safety of all those on board.

Simple Flying

How do pilots decide their cruise altitude.

The higher an airplane goes the lower the fuel burn, and it also allows the airplane to achieve greater cruise speeds more efficiently.

Airplanes fly at high altitudes for many reasons. The higher an airplane goes the lower the fuel burn, and it also allows the airplane to achieve greater cruise speeds more efficiently. Furthermore, high altitudes ensure that the aircraft is well away from the most severe weather which can lead to turbulence and icing.

So, how is the cruise altitude for a particular flight determined? This article focuses on the main factors that determine the altitude of an airplane in a flight.

The service ceiling and the absolute ceiling

When an aircraft is certified, a ceiling called service ceiling is calculated by the manufacturer. This is typically defined as the altitude at which a jet aircraft can maintain a climb rate of at least 300 ft/minute. This ceiling varies with weight changes. For pilots operating an aircraft, the altitude of the main concern is the maximum certified altitude.

This altitude is fixed and is a part of the aircraft limitations mentioned in the flight manual. In most passenger aircraft, the maximum certified altitude is a structural limitation enforced due to the pressurization system. The higher an aircraft flies, the greater the pressure difference between the aircraft cabin and the atmosphere. This can, in the long term, damage the fuselage of the aircraft.

The absolute ceiling, also known as the aerodynamic ceiling, is the altitude at which the low-speed stall speed and high-speed stall speed converge. This altitude is also known as the coffin corner. You can read more about this phenomenon in this article: Aerodynamic Phenomenon: A Detailed Look At the Coffin Corner.

The optimum altitude

In normal line operations, airplanes are operated at an altitude called the optimum altitude. This altitude is the most efficient altitude to operate an aircraft as it leads to increased range and less fuel burn.

The optimum altitude is determined in several ways. In its most basic derivation, it is all about increasing the range or the fuel mileage of the aircraft. Large jetliners cruise using Mach number as a speed reference. As an aircraft climbs, its speed or True Air Speed (TAS) increases, and the local speed of sound decreases. The combined result of this is an ever-increasing Mach number.

Initially, the increase in TAS is quite beneficial as it allows the aircraft to cover more ground with less fuel burn. However, as mentioned before, this increases the Mach number. As the Mach number increases, there is a corresponding increase in compressibility drag (drag due to the aircraft approaching the speed of sound).

At some point, this drag increase can overcome the benefits of the increasing TAS and start to reduce the range of the aircraft. So, the altitude at which the effects of compressibility drag do not negatively affect the range of the aircraft is known as the optimum altitude.

One of the biggest factors that affect the optimum altitude is the weight of the aircraft. The heavier the aircraft the more lift-induced drag the aircraft generates (due to the increased operating angle of attack). This means that the speed for the best range increases, which ultimately increases the Mach number.

As the weight of the aircraft decreases, there is a decrease in drag and the speed for best range falls off allowing a decrease in Mach number which allows the aircraft to climb higher as it is no longer limited by the compressibility drag associated with large Mach numbers.

The most optimum or efficient altitude is not only affected by aerodynamics. The environment plays a major role as well, particularly the prevailing winds and temperature. In modern aircraft, the Flight Management System (FMS) calculates the optimum altitude by considering these factors. For this, the pilots are required to input accurate data into the FMS.

This includes entering cruise winds and updating the temperature for various altitudes. During the dispatch phase of the flight, the pilots are provided data on forecast winds and temperature for normal cruise levels of the aircraft. The pilots can then input these data into the FMS and then once in the air the FMS calculates the most optimum altitude based on the input data.

One might now wonder how winds can affect the range or the optimum altitude. The reason is simple. In tailwind conditions, the aircraft gets a push from the winds, which increases the ground range of the aircraft. In a headwind, it is the opposite. The range is reduced as the headwind reduces the ground speed of the aircraft. Thus, when accurate wind data is available, the FMS may give a lower optimum altitude because a favorable wind (a strong tailwind) results in a longer range.

Want answers to more key questions in aviation? Check out the rest of our guides here .

The entered Cost Index (CI) also plays a major role. CI is a time-to-fuel ratio. A higher CI indicates that a particular airline has lower fuel costs compared to time-related costs. A lower CI, on the other hand, indicates the airline spends more on fuel when compared to time-related spending. Each airline has a CI calculated based on their operations and this is mentioned in the flight plan. The pilots can then enter this value in the FMS and the FMS uses this information to further optimize the optimum cruise altitude.

Step climbs

Step climbs or cruise climbs is a climbing technique whereby pilots initially remain at a higher or a lower altitude than the optimum altitude. As discussed earlier, as an aircraft's weight decreases the drag reduces which increases the optimum altitude. In a long-range flight, the fuel burn results in large changes in weight which can keep modifying the optimum altitude throughout the flight.

In the initial parts of the flight, the pilots may cruise at a lower altitude than the optimum altitude. This happens most of the time due to the fact a heavier aircraft has lower climb rates, and a slow climbing aircraft can be a nuisance to both the pilots of other aircraft and air traffic control. Once the fuel is burnt enough, and the weight reduced the pilots can initiate a climb to the optimum altitude.

If the aircraft performance permits, a higher altitude than the optimum can be chosen. This way, as the weight of the aircraft, reduces the aircraft can settle to the optimum altitude later in the flight. This is the best option given all the other conditions, such as weather and ATC complies as this prevents the aircraft from being stuck at lower altitudes for the majority of the flight.

In real life, pilots may not be able to get the optimum altitude for a cruise on every flight. This mainly occurs due to ATC restrictions (other aircraft occupying the altitude, airspace restrictions, etc.). Weather and turbulence are other factors that may prevent pilots from achieving the desired optimum altitude. In such situations, the pilots should try to remain as close as possible to the optimum altitude. Generally, remaining within 2000 ft on either side of the optimum altitude does not affect cruise performance that significantly.

Airplane Cruise – Balanced Forces

Image of airplane with formulas

Four Forces

There are four forces that act on an aircraft in flight: lift, weight, thrust, and drag. A force is a vector quantity which means that it has both a magnitude (size) and a direction associated with it. If the size and direction of the forces acting on an object are exactly balanced, then there is no  net force  acting on the object and the object is said to be in equilibrium. From Newton’s  first law of motion,  we know that an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion (constant velocity) will stay in motion unless acted on by an external force. If there is no net external force, the object will maintain a constant velocity.

Cruise Velocity

In an ideal situation, the forces acting on an aircraft in flight can produce no net external force. In this situation the lift is equal to the weight, and the thrust is equal to the drag. The closest example of this condition is a  cruising  airliner. While the weight decreases due to fuel burned, the change is very small relative to the total aircraft weight. The aircraft maintains a constant airspeed called the  cruise velocity .

Relative Velocity

If we take into account the relative velocity of the wind, we can determine the ground speed of a cruising aircraft. The ground speed is equal to the airspeed plus the wind speed using vector addition. The motion of the aircraft is a pure translation. With a constant ground speed, it is relatively easy to determine the aircraft range, the distance the airplane can fly with a given load of fuel.

If the pilot changes the throttle setting, or increases the wing angle of attack, the forces become unbalanced. The aircraft will move in the direction of the greater force, and we can compute acceleration of the aircraft from Newton’s  second law of motion .

Checked luggage will be transferred to the vessel by staff.

The maximum weight allowed on the flights to and from Antarctica is 20 kg (44 lb.) per passenger, including hand luggage(2024-25); or 25kg (55 lb.) checked luggage(2025-26): 20kg (44 lb.) checked luggage and 5kg (11 lb.) hand luggage. For the main Antarctica air cruise, excess luggage will be kept in custody in Punta Arenas and will be handed over to travelers upon their return from Antarctica. The baggage weight limit is a technical requirement imposed by the flight operation. Unfortunately, it is not possible to purchase extra allowance. Note that at certain points during the expedition you will be required to handle your own luggage. Seats are not assigned on the charter flights between Chile and Antarctica.

Kayaking is available on all Ocean Nova departures at $895(2024-25) or $695(2025-26), or on all Magellan Explorer departures at $995(2024-25) or $895(2025-26) per person. To take part in the program participants must have previous kayaking experience. Minimum age is 16 to participate, and the group is limited to a maximum of 10 participants(2024-25), or 20 participants with two groups of 10 alternating days (starting in 2025-26). Please contact AdventureSmith to reserve activity space with your booking.

Snowshoeing is also available on all departures at $85 per person per excursion and can be booked and paid for on board the ship. All snowshoeing excursions are a maximum of 12 participants (minimum age 12).

Room Configuration

In addition to listed Single cabin rates, select double-occupancy cabins may be available for single occupancy with a single supplement fee. Single travelers wishing to book a double-occupancy cabin may do so at an 85% supplement of the per-person listed rate in select Porthole and Veranda Cabins (Magellan Explorer) or Twin Cabins (Ocean Nova) upon availability; all other categories incur a 100% supplement. Sharing a cabin with another passenger of the same gender is also an option (same cabin categories apply). Passengers who book a Twin Cabin on a shared basis are accommodated in single rooms at the hotel in Punta Arenas and must pay a Single Hotel Room Supplement that varies based on departure selected.

Note: Single travelers who use CPAP machines or other assistive devices, as well as those who have conditions that can be disrupting to others (loud snoring, sleepwalking etc.) can only book their Air Cruise in a Single Cabin or in a Twin Cabin for single use. They cannot book on a twin-share basis.

Families & Children

Children are admitted from the age of 8 years if accompanied by a fully responsible adult. A 5% discount on the rate per person is offered for children up to 11 years of age; also for family groups of 6 or more travelers (special booking conditions apply).

Travel Insurance

Emergency medical evacuation insurance is mandatory for this trip, with a minimum recommended coverage of $100,000 USD per person. In addition to the emergency evacuation insurance, we highly recommend our travelers protect their investment with travel insurance that includes trip cancellation and other benefits. Our partners at Travelex Insurance offer a variety of plans and policies to fit every trip and budget. Coverage for a pre-existing medical condition is also available if you purchase the Travel Select plan within 15 days of the initial trip payment; refer to plan details.  Learn more about travel insurance  or  get a free quote .

Itinerary Notes

Read this itinerary as a guide only; the exact route and program varies according to ice, weather conditions and the wildlife encountered and the captain’s discretion. Flights to and from Antarctica operate based on weather conditions. While historically only a minority of flights have experienced a delay, be prepared for that possibility. Flexibility is the key to the success of any Antarctica expedition. Visits to research stations depend on final permission.

Contingency Plan

In the unlikely event that the flight to Antarctica cannot take place on the scheduled day due to unfavorable weather conditions, a Contingency Plan, included in the cost of your expedition, will apply. The primary goal of the plan is to provide an engaging and comfortable travel experience while adapting to the weather. A change in the flight schedule can impact travel to Antarctica or the return back, and the plan includes a range of activities determined by the circumstances. Additionally, the Contingency Plan offers financial protection by providing a refund should weather conditions prevent you from reaching Antarctica. Please read the full  Contingency Plan  and contact your Adventure Specialist for more details.

Reviews from Our Experts So You Know What to Expect

AdventureSmith's founder and president reviews his air cruise aboard the 67-guest Ocean Nova. Learn what it's like to fly the Drake and why he's dubbed Antarctica "Alaska's big brother."

Hear It from Travelers Who Have Explored Antarctica with Us

We most enjoyed flying over the Drake Passage - left more time to enjoy Antarctica. We chose a small vessel with only 68 passengers. It was an amazing experience, and I really liked being on a smaller vessel.

Our Antarctic trip was all we expected and more; lots of adventure and fun! We were very pleased with the high quality staff on board the Ocean Nova.

The Magellan Explorer was a magnificent Expedition ship and the triple cabin outstanding. First rate luxury that still invited casualness. No detail was too small to discuss with our AdventureSmith specialist in finding the perfect ship, travel date and accommodations.

We most enjoyed flying over the Drake Passage - left more time to enjoy Antarctica. Loved the colours of the ice, the penguins (not the smell!!), seals, whales and birds. We chose a small vessel with only 68 passengers. We chose the kayaking option, which was brilliant. It was an amazing experience, and I really liked being on a smaller vessel.

Our Antarctic trip was all we expected and more; lots of adventure and fun! We were very pleased with the high quality staff on board the Ocean Nova. All meals were great.  We like active vactions, and this was not a ‘lay on the beach’ trip. Some people seemed surprised at the level of fitness required to really go twice a day and see all we saw, however we loved it.  We chose the Air Cruise because we have been waiting for a trip to emerge that did not involve sailing across the Drake Passage due to sea sickness and the time it requires. Our advice to other travelers is, it will possibly be one of the most unique places you will ever visit and it is definitely worth the time and expense.

  • Cruises with Flights to Antarctica

Although weather delays and COVID concerns proved challenging to the full enjoyment of the trip as planned, we certainly appreciated all the efforts made by Antarctica21 to make the most of what we were dealt with. If just based on the one day or so we had the opportunity to experience Antarctica...and projecting the remaining days had the trip not been interrupted in the beginning and at the end...then I can say it was indeed a trip of a lifetime. The Magellan Explorer was a magnificent Expedition ship and the triple cabin outstanding. First rate luxury that still invited casualness.

The Magellan Explorer was a magnificent Expedition ship and the triple cabin outstanding. First rate luxury that still invited casualness.

Great variety and welcomed the buffet style breakfast and lunch.  Complimentary wine at lunch and dinner a plus.

All leaders had great personalities, knowledgeable and sincere care that we get the most out of our experience.

Itinerary Review

When visiting Antarctica, the experience is greater than the sum of the places individually visited. The sheer excitement of stepping foot on the continent is a highlight along with walking beside penguins in their natural habitat. If I were to isolate one highlight activity it would be the kayaking amongst the glaciers, icebergs, whales and seals.

Our adventure specialist, Arielle Lightcap, was exceptional in every way. She kept in constant touch to make sure we had all the required preparation paperwork, quickly answered all of our questions and addressed any concerns in a reassuring way.  She reached out to us once we arrived at our destination to make sure all went well and if we were in need of anything.  And of course, checked in with us once we arrived back home.

As holds true for many, visiting Antarctica was a definite bucket list travel destination. I researched many agencies before reaching out to AdventureSmith. Arielle Lightcap responded to my email inquiry with a thorough knowledge of the trip and invested in the time and patience to review all the various options available for a trip of this magnitude for my family. No detail was too small to discuss and finding the perfect ship, travel date and accommodations took a great deal of time to research, explain and finalize, for which I am most appreciative. The variety and quality of travel adventures offered by AdventureSmith is exceptional.

By flying in small groups, say the organizers, guests dramatically cut the costs of private flight but enjoy similar perks of enhanced service and cuisine. These cruises are often connected to five-star hotels, have their own doctors and private chefs, and sometimes include private limousines and drivers for each couple or family—so if the airplane feels crowded, an escape is available on landing.

Private Jet Trips crossing multiple time zones have become extremely popular among wealthy travelers who want to see the world on their terms.

The trips use midsized business jets for regional travel or, for traversing time zones, “bizliners.” These are converted commercial jets with luxe interiors that feature a smaller number of seats (often recliners for sleeping) as well as open areas, a serious galley and larger bathrooms.

The Four Seasons Private Jet, for instance, is an Airbus A321 with just 48 seats to accommodate roughly a quarter of the passengers of the A321’s commercial configuration. The aircraft travels with an executive chef, doctor, a Four Seasons concierge, a journey manager, and an assistant journey manager. The jet also has a lounge.

The itinerary includes stargazing in Costa Rica with Costa Rican astronaut Franklin Chang Diaz, visiting the world’s largest waterfall system at Argentina’s Iguazú National Park, and taking a four-night cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula aboard a luxurious polar ship. There will also be a cocktail party at Machu Picchu and a private concert by the Bogotá Philharmonic, among other insider-access events.

Not everyone can clear three weeks to join a standard tour. For the time-strapped, the brand is debuting more family-friendly programs for 2024 and 2025 that cover more ground in less time.

Its African Wonders tour takes travelers across a wide swath of geography in 13 days, starting in Athens with a visit to the Parthenon, before heading south through the African continent to see Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza, Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, and attractions in Rwanda, Mauritius, Zambia, and South Africa.

There are also smaller group trips closer to home. Starting at $227,000 for two adults, Four Seasons Resorts Hawaii is partnering with VistaJet and Lanai Air to curate a four-island journey showcasing Hawaii’s history, culture, and natural beauty for private parties of up to eight.

VistaJet has fashioned its own Private World tours that range from single destinations to longer, multi-stop itineraries. Its three-week tour of Southeast Asia , in association with Ariodante, begins in Jakarta before heading to Sangiran and Cambodia to explore the remnants of the Khmer Empire, including the temples of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Ta Prohm. Following that is a helicopter trip into Vietnam’s Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park for a four-day trek through the jungle with a team of experts into the world’s largest cave, Hang Son Doong.

Abercrombie & Kent’s Wings Over Europe’s Iconic Capitals is an air adventure that spends 11 days experiencing the best of London, Paris, Rome, and Athens.

Limited to 13 guests, the tour takes you by private charter to the changing of the Mounted Guard in London, breakfast atop the Eiffel Tower, and a secret passage that connects Rome’s Castel Sant’Angelo with the Vatican. Afterward, you’ll travel along the Athenian Riviera by electric trike.

Private Jet Trips crossing multiple time zones have become extremely popular among wealthy travelers who want to see the world on their terms.

By contrast, the company’s Africa: Across a Continent by Private Jet is a 22-day trip that explores the continent’s natural and manmade treasures, from the pyramids of ancient Egypt to the Serengeti to the mountain gorillas of Rwanda to the medina of Marrakech.

Starting at $134,000 per person, the aircraft is a converted Boeing 757 with just 48 recliners for crisscrossing Africa. The journey includes exclusive access to many of the sites, including the Sphinx in Egypt, a hot-air balloon trip over the Serengeti, luxury safari camps in the bush, and glamping in the Sahara. Helicopter trips, wine-tastings and even a voodoo ceremony are also options.

“This is the next best thing to having your own private jet,” says Stefanie Schmudde, vice president of product development at Abercrombie & Kent. “Guests enjoy the benefits of private air, while on an itinerary that makes the most of each day.” Put another way: Maximizing time is why these air cruises work.

The Most Produced Aircraft: What Is The Cessna 172's Cruise Speed?

The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is famous for being the most-produced aircraft of all time, with over 45,000 airframes built since the first rolled off the production line in 1956. This legendary general aviation light aircraft will go down in history as one of the most reliable, efficient, and versatile planes ever built, capable of performing all kinds of roles.

Interestingly, despite major advancements in technology and design since the 172 was released, the plane's cruise speed hasn't changed too much over the decades. Instead, upgrades to the aircraft have tended to boost its reliability, avionics, and safety. Nonetheless, modern Cessna 172 models are still almost 20% faster than the original, so some improvements have been made in this department.

Cessna 172 cruise speed

The current in-production model of the 172 series is the Cessna 172S Skyhawk SP, offering modern upgrades like a glass cockpit, Garmin G1000 NXi avionics suite and a 180-horsepower Lycoming IO-360-L2A engine. Compared to the previous model, the 172R, the 172S features an additional 20HP, and the Garmin G1000 suite comes as standard, among other tweaks.

As per Textron Aviation, the aircraft's maximum cruise speed is 124 knots (142 mph or 230 km/h), with a maximum range of 640 NM (1,185 km) and a climb rate of up to 730 fpm. However, this range can change depending on engine power, altitude, and weight of aircraft.

Discover more aviation news with Simple Flying.

Modest speed increases

As mentioned earlier, the Skyhawk's cruise speed has risen modestly over the decades, but improvements haven't been dramatic given the limitations of a single-engine piston aircraft. The first Cessna 172 model was fitted with a 145HP Continental O-300 engine before an upgrade to the Lycoming O-320 around a decade later.

According to 172guide , the first Cessna 172 had a cruise speed of 108 knots (132 mph or 212 km/h), which was gradually increased in future iterations:

  • 172C (1962): Continental O-300-C - 114 knots at 7,000 ft altitude
  • 172I (1968): Lycoming O-320-E2D - 114 knots at 9,000 ft altitude
  • 172N (1979): Lycoming O-320-H2AD - 122 knots at 8,000 ft altitude

Let's compare some of the specs of the first Cessna 172 with the in-production 172S:

A Look At Why The Cessna 172 Is The Best Selling Aircraft In The World

Against the competition.

The 172 is well ahead of other trainers in terms of aircraft built and sold. However, when looking at its specs compared to those of its rivals, it doesn't outshine them in all departments. In fact, if we look at cruise speed alone (at 75% engine power), it is sometimes slightly slower than most of its counterparts.

Piper PA-28 Cherokee

Take the Piper PA-28 Cherokee, for example, which is generally considered the main rival to the Cessna 172 series. Entering service in the early 1960s, the PA-28 initially offered a higher cruise speed of over 120 knots, although the current in-production Piper's have a similar cruise speed to the Cessna 172S.

Diamond DA40

The Diamond DA40 is, without a doubt, a faster aircraft than the 172, with an initial cruise speed of 145 knots when it came out in 1997. The most up-to-date variant - the DA40 NG - is powered by a 168 hp Austro Engine AE300, which offers a cruise speed of 154 knots, as well as a higher service ceiling of 16,000ft.

Beechcraft Musketeer

The Beechcraft Musketeer is another popular trainer aircraft and one of the few that is slower than the 172. Take the Beechcraft Musketeer Sport II, for example, which has a cruise speed of 108 knots, well below the 172S' 124 knots, or the Musketeer Custom II, which offers a cruise speed of 102 knots.

Comparing the 172 and 182

Simple Flying recently took a deep dive into the differences between the 172 Skyhawk and the larger Cessna 182 Skylane , another popular trainer and general aviation aircraft. The Skylane is Cessna's second most popular aircraft still in production behind the 172 and a feasible alternative for flight schools and private owners.

The 182 features a more powerful Lycoming IO-540-AB1A5 engine, giving it a cruise speed of 145 knots - on top of this, its extra fuel capacity gives it almost 50% more range than the 172 at 930 NM.

A training favorite

The Cessna 172's ease of operation makes it a clear favorite for student pilots, and you can find a Cessna 172 at just about every flight school in the world. Cessna estimates an average of 75 flight hours to earn a private license.

5 Reasons The Cessna 172 Is A Favorite With Flight Training Schools

The plane also boasts exceptional reliability and an immaculate safety record, with a fatality rate of 0.56 fatal crashes per 100,000 flying hours, which is less than half the industry standard of 1.2-1.4 per 100,000.

I'll only allow clapping on a solar eclipse flight: Here's what it was like onboard

airplane in cruise flight

Millions of people across North America watched the total solar eclipse Monday, but I was one of the few in a lucky group to see it from the sky.

It was certainly a different perspective. On the ground, the main event is, of course, seeing the moon fully obscure the sun. But from the sky, the real show was seeing the shadow of totality sweep over the landscape below, to watch as street lights flickered on in that temporary darkness while daylight reigned just over the edge.

I flew as a guest of Delta Air Lines on Flight 1010 from Dallas-Fort Worth to Detroit, and we encountered the experience of totality for about four minutes over southeastern Missouri.

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Because the eclipse itself was only visible to those on the south side of the plane, the team at Delta planned ahead and got special permission to execute turns during totality so everyone onboard could see – about two minutes per side.

“For us, it’s a normal flight. For this flight just knowing where the sun was going to be, just trying to maximize the opportunities for the passengers,” Alex Howell, chief standards captain for Delta’s Airbus A320 fleet and pilot in charge on Flight 1010 told me just after we landed in Detroit. “It was great. It really went off without a hitch.”

Onboard, the mood was festive. I can’t remember the last time I was on a flight where there was applause after almost every announcement, at the start of the takeoff roll, again when we lifted off the ground and once more when we landed. Usually I’m not a fan of this kind of clapping, but for the solar eclipse, I could make the exception.

Delta’s representatives told me it was a cross-company effort to get the flight I was on, as well as another eclipse special from Austin, Texas, off the ground. It was a good reminder that the miracle of flight can unlock many other experiences for passengers.

How the flights were planned

According to Chris Clisham, a Delta flight superintendent, the first step in planning these special eclipse flights was determining the timing.

“What went into it is seeing where we wanted to intersect that shadow, where we wanted to see that totality and work backward from there,” he said. “Then we backed up and said, ‘OK, what kind of departure time do we need for that?’”

After that, the planning happened much like any other flight, although some extra, advanced communication with air traffic control was involved.

“The planning was, on one hand, routine, what we do for every flight, every day sort of a thing, but on the other hand, as we got closer to the event today, the focus became on cloud cover,” Warren Weston, Delta's lead meteorologist, told me in Dallas before we boarded.

It was cloudy as we departed Dallas, and even at cruising altitude (ha!) there was some wispy coverage, but it broke just before the moon and sun did their tango.

What else you can see from a plane

Of course, eclipses are fairly rare events, but they’re hardly the only natural wonders visible from commercial flights.

Mark Vanhoenacker , a Boeing 787 pilot for British Airways and author of “Skyfaring” and “Imagine a City,” told me flying is a constant reminder of the magic going on in the sky.

“The northern lights are, I think they’re probably the most amazing thing we see from the flight deck,” he said. “It’s such an amazing thing, and they shimmer and they kind of have this quality of milk landing in coffee. They have this very slow motion that you almost can’t perceive until you look away from them and then you look back and it’s different.”

Vanhoenacker said auroras and eclipses aren’t the only spectacles out the window of a plane, either.

“I joke in ‘Skyfaring’ that we kind of run out of wishes. You see so many shooting stars. It’s a challenge to maintain our childhood excitement at that kind of thing, about all the wonders of flying, really,” he said. “One of the things that’s most special about flying is being above the clouds. A lot of people are not going to see the eclipse. One of the best ways to ensure you see any phenomena of the night sky is to be above the clouds.”

What it was like onboard

That idea of a nearly guaranteed eclipse sighting was certainly a draw for passengers on Flight 1010.

Many told me they had seen eclipses before and wanted to get a new perspective, and the mood onboard was friendly and celebratory – I, again, note all the clapping.

Clisham made a prediction ahead of the flight that turned out to be true: “The biggest difference is you’re going to see all the window shades up for once,” he said. “Everyone’s going to want to look out the window.”

As I sit in an aisle seat writing this on another flight where almost all the shades are down, I wish my fellow travelers would bring Vanhoenacker’s sense of wonder to every flight rather than just those that are marketed for what’s going on outside the window. Even if it’s not an eclipse, there’s always a lot to see from 35,000 feet.

From Delta's solar eclipse flight to $200 sound healing ceremonies, here's how people are splashing out to celebrate the eclipse

  • Visitors are expected to flock to states like Texas and Maine to enjoy solar eclipse views.
  • Some are looking for a more unique experience, spending up to $6,000 on tours.
  • Others are spending their cash on more spiritual practices like sound healing ceremonies.

Insider Today

Visitors are expected to flock across the US to enjoy the best views of the solar eclipse; some are traipsing their tents and vans across the country and others are booking into hotels.

The "path of totality" — where the moon will appear to block the sun completely — will stretch from Texas to Maine. And choosing the right location is worth it according to some experts .

Southern states like Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Illinois may experience over four minutes of totality , longer than the average solar eclipse in this century.

But some solar eclipse fans want a more unique experience, splashing thousands of dollars on tours, flights, and rituals.

Here is how people are going above and beyond to get the best views:

Delta Air Lines special solar eclipse flights

Delta Air Lines is offering a flight from Austin to Detroit for those eager to view the solar eclipse from 30,000 feet in the air.

The flight has been planned to maximize passengers' eclipse experience, from selecting an aircraft with extra-large windows to determining the precise departure time, Delta said in a press release.

Related stories

A one-way ticket for the flight started at $749 and went up to $1,150 for those looking for a first-class seat, per CNBC .

The popularity of the first ticket release led the airline to release a second solar eclipse flight, this time from Dallas to Detroit.

A $200 sound healing retreat claims to harness the energy of Mother Earth during the solar eclipse

For those looking for a more spiritual way to enjoy the event, a small business in Vermont offers an 8-hour sound-healing retreat.

The day starts with a talk from an astrologer before launching into a selection of rituals involving herbal ointments (made especially for the eclipse) and sounds from "crystal singing bowls and medicine drums", according to the event's website.

It says the event hopes to provide a "peaceful environment" among the crowds that are expected to visit Vermont.

A $5,000 Texas trip includes viewing the eclipse from a vineyard with private guides on hand

Travel company Smithsonian Journeys offers four different solar eclipse tours in Texas that start at $4,995 and go up to $6,695 for a five-day trip.

In the build-up to the eclipse, customers had private astronomy talks, visited a solar observatory, and hiked through canyons.

The eclipse day itinerary takes place in a vineyard with wine tasting and time in the garden to watch the four minutes of complete darkness with guides available to answer eclipse-specific questions.

Some of the tours end the evening with a riverboat dinner cruise.

A 22-day cruise off the coast of Mexico, with guest lectures from a physicist

Holland America Line's Solar Eclipse Cruise set sail on April 5 and plans to be off the coast of Mexico in the path of totality on April 8.

The ship will be placed in the "perfect location for guests to see the eclipse," said Bill Prince, vice president of entertainment for Holland America Line, on the company's blog.

Despite the eclipse only lasting up to 4 minutes out of the 22-day cruise, the experience is padded with lectures and top tips from University of California San Diego Professor Adam Burgasser.

The price of this cruise isn't publicly available, but the company's other 22-day cruises can cost $3,175 a person.

Boeing 737 max diverts to idaho after in-flight emergency.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A Boeing 737 Max aircraft during a display at the Farnborough International Airshow, in Farnborough, Britain, July 20, 2022.

A Boeing 737 Max 8 operated by Air Canada made an emergency landing in Idaho this week after experiencing an in-flight emergency.

On Tuesday, Flight 997 diverted to Boise during its trip from Mexico City to Vancouver, Canada, after the pilots received an indicator light in the flight deck, the airline told FOX Business.

Officials later discovered that it was due to a faulty cargo hold indicator.

The flight landed at Boise Airport after the light came on as a precautionary measure. The aircraft was met by first responders at around 11 a.m. local time.

There were 122 passengers and six crew members on board during the incident.

All passengers were picked up by another aircraft Tuesday evening to complete their trip, the airline said.

Boeing deferred comment to Air Canada.

This marks the latest in a string of incidents involving Boeing aircraft since the beginning of the year when a plug-in door blew off an Alaska Airlines flight.

Earlier this week, a Boeing 737-800 plane – operated by Southwest Airlines – was headed for William P. Hobby Airport in Houston when the engine cowling fell off and struck the wing flap during takeoff in Denver.

Air Canada planes are seen at the gates at Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Dorval, Quebec, Canada on April 2, 2024.

A few days before that, a Boeing 737 Max 9 jet headed from Honolulu to Anchorage, Alaska, operated by Alaska Airlines, had to turn around after a malfunctioning bathroom sink flooded the cabin, according to reports.

The windshield of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 jet cracked while landing in Oregon in mid-March.

United Airlines reported at least six unrelated incidents that occurred on planes operated by United since the end of February.

Five of them involved a Boeing plane.

Here's how one airline is planning to provide a total eclipse experience — from 30,000 feet in the air

By Manuel Bojorquez , Analisa Novak

April 5, 2024 / 11:31 AM EDT / CBS News

In a move that has captured the imagination of skywatchers and travelers alike, Delta Air Lines is setting the stage and offering two special flights that will allow flyers to witness next week's total solar eclipse from the best vantage point possible.

The flights will take place on Monday, with one going from Austin to Detroit and a second route from Dallas to Detroit. Both sold out in 24 hours. These flights were strategically chosen to skirt the path of the eclipse, with a special detour over southeast Missouri planned for the optimal viewing experience. There, the aircraft will perform a meticulous 30-degree bank on either side, granting passengers a rare four-minute glimpse of the eclipse .

Passengers will also be given specialized glasses to provide eye safety to witness the total solar eclipse, which will be visible from Mexico, the U.S. and Canada.

"I think that we're gonna be able to provide a really unique experience," said Captain Phil Marshall, who, alongside Captain Phil Daniels, will take the helm for the flight.

The challenge of syncing the flights with the moon's swift shadow, which races across the United States at over 1,500 miles per hour, falls on the shoulders of Delta's operations and customer center. Flight Superintendent Erin Wehrman and her team are tasked with navigating the planes not only from point A to point B, but also in alignment with the eclipse.

"We're traveling at about 400 miles per hour, so the sun is actually going to be catching up to us. So we're taking off before it even hit the U.S. border on the south end, and it will catch up to us," said Wehrman.

Weather also plays a crucial role in the day's success. Delta meteorologist Warren Weston is on standby, ready to steer the flights above any potential cloud cover, ensuring a clear view of the eclipse.

Meanwhile, pilots are preparing for the flight of a lifetime.

"This is fantastic for me," said Marshall. "It's always, every day's like a dream come true for us as pilots."
