Our tours makes it easy to experience many of southern Utah’s hidden treasures. We take the road less traveled to show you places that most visitors see only in photographs.

Head out to the sand dunes for hours of enjoyment in the desert landscape. Views from the top of Hurricane Sands allow riders to see Zion, Warner Valley and more. Try out a side-by-side Rhino ATV for families: it's the perfect size for four people. ATV rentals and guides are readily available in multiple locations.

ATVs and off-road vehicles in general are popular machines in southern Utah. The weather is nice enough that people can get out all year round, which is a great opportunity to see another side of Zion.

In addition to location, visitors can choose the type of vehicle they prefer: single person ATVs, either automatic or manual; two or four person Rhino ATVs with side-by-side bucket seats; jeeps and other off-road vehicles.

Where to go ATV / Off-roading

ATVs and off-road vehicles are prohibited in Zion National Park, as well as National Wilderness Areas. However, that still leaves plenty of space to roll the throttle back and feel the wind in your hair.

For those staying in St. George, ATV trails are easily accessible. For those passing through from Zion or elsewhere, there are also exciting riding areas to the east.

Hurricane Sands Here you'll climb the majestic Red Plateau to take in the nearly limitless view of St. George, Zion National Park, Pine Valley Mountains, and Warner Valley. The unique high desert vegetation and fiery red dunes will make you think that you've somehow landed on Mars! Located just north of Sand Hollow, this area sits above the reservoir, immediately to the southwest of the town of Hurricane, UT.

Sand Hollow State Park Just a few miles from St. George, Utah, ATV riders have 15,000 acres open to explore! That's more than the average amount, to say the least. The rust-colored sand and dirt has collected over thousands of years, leaving this pristine area for recreation. Inside Sand Hollow State Park, the Sand Mountain Riding Area is located on the south and east sides of Sand Hollow Reservoir, with convenient parking and off-loading for vehicles. Access is easiest by heading south on Sand Hollow Rd. from UT-9.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park  1,500 acres of open sand dunes are open to ATV use in this off-roading playground. Head up the salmon-colored sand dunes, make a quick turn and head back down for another round! Coral Pink Sand Dunes is located just 20 miles west of Kanab, or an hour's drive east from Zion National Park.

Vermilion Cliffs Straddling the Arizona border, Vermilion Cliffs holds miles and miles of open trails for those looking to get out into isolation. Particularly known for the area around South Coyote Butte, unique rock formations are great destinations for these types of expeditions. Vermilion Cliffs is located halfway between Kanab and Page, about 90 miles east of Springdale.

Tour Guide Dave eating Prickly Pear Fruit

For those of you who don’t want to drive a UTV, we offer the opportunity to have our guide drive the machine. Many guests have opted for this and been glad they did! With our guide at the wheel we are able to cover more ground and you don’t have to spend time focusing on the road – instead you can take in all the beauty that the Zion Country offers.

Your tour guide is the real deal and lives the lifestyle.  When they aren’t leading our unique tours, they are out there exploring on their own ATVs, UTVs, Jeeps, etc.  They leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.  Guiding is more than just knowing about a place – the rocks, plants, history, etc. – for them, guiding is a way of life.  We wouldn’t have it any other way!

Dave, the owner of Zion Country Off-Road Tours, since childhood has been living the outdoor lifestyle and learning to live off the land. When he isn’t guiding tours he is out with his family doing his own off-roading whether it be in a Jeep or UTV. He loves to search for fossils and petrified wood, learn about the unique geological formations of Southern Utah, and all the desert plants, and their uses, this area has to offer.  Dave believes that guiding is more than knowing about a place – – it is about being able to share the adventurous spirit that only comes through discovering these things firsthand.  He just isn’t a guide, he lives it, breathes it, and as he puts it, “He wakes up and puts on dirt.” Yes, he is an Eagle Scout and honors it to the fullest extent.

Everything was just outstanding! Dave is a fantastic guide. Not only is he informative, sharing details about the land and its history, but he is thoughtful too. His genuine desire is to ensure that you have a remarkable experience. We went on an ATV adventure with Dave. His equipment is top notch. All automatic and with power steering. This makes everything super easy for those that have little to no experience on ATVs. If we ever travel back to the area we would tour with Dave again in a heartbeat. If you are even thinking about whether or not you should tour with Dave and his company…stop…call him…and have an amazing experience.

Not only was it a great ride, we had tone of fun, shared stories and will definitely be back in the coming years!! Dave you rock. Thank you for the awesome time!!!

My Top 3 Picks: Best Zion ATV / UTV Tours

#1 TOP PICK

UTVs lined up in a row

11 Best UTV Tours, Zion National Park

Utah is a beautiful and diverse state, full of magnificent landscapes and stunning views. And Zion National Park is one of the most spectacular spots in Utah, with its towering red rock cliffs, deep canyons, lush meadows and winding rivers.

You are not allowed to ride UTVs or other off-road vehicles in Zion National Park itself.

However, there are many great ATV/ UTV tours available near Zion National Park, where you can drive the dusty red trails, and see beautiful slot canyons.

For those looking for an exciting adventure that will let them explore this unique area in a whole new way, a UTV tour is definitely the way to go!

First off, you may be wondering wwhat the differnce between a UTV & ATV.

What is the difference between a UTV & ATV?

A Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) is a type of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) , designed to carry heavier loads and more people , than what you think of as an ATV. Often called a side-by-side, it’s better for outdoor work, hauling, and going off-roading with more people. It looks like a beefed up dune buggy.

From navigating narrow slot canyons to taking on challenging terrain over sandstone hillsides – there’s a tour here for all ages, and groups.

Here are 11 of our favorite ATV / UTV tours near Zion National Park that you won’t want to miss out on.

ATV Rides Near Zion

Zion ponderosa ranch, east zion adventures, zion jeep tours, atv & jeep adventure tours.

Going on an ATV excursion can be one of the most exciting things you do on your trip to Zion National Park. You can speed along the rough terrain to get your fill of thrills or take in the scenery by slowly tackling the natural obstacles.

There are a wide variety of trails and routes to choose from. While ATV tours are not done directly in Zion National Park, there are many places in the surrounding areas that offer tours. Some of these tours will even run along the perimeter of Zion.

It is important to follow all safety guidelines while participating in ATV rides near Zion. Make sure that everyone in your party meets the requirement for riding and you are supplied the proper gear. ATV rides near Zion National Park can be a fun and safe way to explore.

Types of ATV’s

All terrain vehicles are known for being able to tackle obstacles that most vehicles would not be able to. Their unique design means you can conquer many rock and land formations without getting yourself into a bad situation. There are a few different types of ATVs that can be used for exploring through ATV rides near Zion. It is a good idea to research the different vehicles to decide which will work best for you. Consider your group members and the areas you would like to visit when choosing an ATV for your trip!

Quad or four-wheeler

These are the most common ATVs and are what most people think of when they picture an ATV. Popular among many groups of people, they have a quick learning curve and can be a blast to ride. These vehicles have four wheels with knobby tires which are perfect for gripping a variety of surfaces. They are equipped with a heavy suspension to make your ride less bumpy and more comfortable. Most quads can seat 2 people so it is possible to bring along a passenger. The safe design and comfortable ride of quads make them a great way to explore near Zion.

Utility Task Vehicle (UTV)

UTVs, or Utility Task Vehicles, have been gaining popularity in recent years. Originally, these vehicles were used for performing tasks on farms or other large land lots. They are often called side-by-sides and range from vehicles that look like miniature trucks to ones that resemble dune buggies. UTVs have come a long way from hauling horse feed. Most are equipped with comfortable bucket seats and five point harnesses for safety. The have knobby tires like a quad to give you great traction. UTVs feature a heavy roll bar to give you more protection than a quad. They are a terrific choice when riding in larger parties whether you want to take things slow or rip through the terrain.

Trike or three-wheeler

Less commonly used than quads or ATVs, three-wheelers, or trikes, are another option for exploring the landscape. Some rental companies carry trikes if they are the vehicle that you would prefer to use. The reason trikes are used infrequently is their safety issues. Trikes are more likely to tip or be used improperly which can cause injury. If you are a skilled trike rider and enjoy the thrill, this option is a great one. However, if you prefer a leisurely ride along the terrain a quad or UTV should be considered.

Rules and regulations

As with any activity, it is very important to follow the specific rules and regulations for ATV rides near Zion. These rules should be explained to you by the ATV rental company and, often, you must sign a waiver stating that you understand the rules. It is very important to stay off private land and protected areas. If you find yourself wandering into an area that you think you shouldn't be in, play it safe and turn back. There are many areas near Zion that have protected wildlife, vegetation, and land formations. If you were to destroy these features with an ATV it could be devastating to the ecosystem. Always stick to the marked routes. Another regulation to be aware of is only adults 18-years-old and older can operate ATVs. By limiting their use to only adults the risk of serious injury from user error decreases greatly. Most rental companies will provide a tour guide to ensure you follow these rules and regulations while still having a great time.

When to ride

Summer, spring, and fall are the ideal seasons to go on ATV rides near Zion National Park. Although some rentals are available year-round, winter could prove to be quite miserable. Between the icy conditions and the biting cold, we recommend sticking with warmer months to get a great ATV experience. In summer, though the temperature can soar, the breeze created as you speed along will be refreshing and keep you from feeling too hot. You’ll be less likely to get rained out during the summer as well. Remember to bring lots of water and check that no one in your party is feeling overheated. ATV riding near Zion National Park in the spring allows for leisurely rides in comfortable temperatures. Since this is around the rainy season, you may get to splash along in some higher waters to add to the ATV experience. You are also more likely to ride alongside some of Zion’s most interesting wildlife and blooming flora. Fall ATV rides are a beautiful and unique experience. As the seasons change, the landscape becomes even more stunning. As you ride to different vantage points you will have photography opportunities that many can only dream of. The temperature is comfortable and the overall weather conditions are generally favorable.

What you’ll need

Obviously, you will need a reliable vehicle to explore on. The best way to do this is to rent an ATV from one of many companies in the area. They will ensure that the equipment is up to the task and is mechanically sound.

Helmet, goggles, and gloves

Most rental companies will have these essential items available as well. The use of these articles is a matter of safety and they are not optional. By using this safety gear your ride can be fun and worry-free.

Appropriate clothing and footwear

Sweatpants just won't cut it. You will need to wear heavyweight pants, a shirt that covers you, and tough, fully enclosed shoes or boots. Rocks and debris may fly up during your ride. If you have on lightweight clothing the likelihood that you will be injured increases. Additionally, clothing should fit close to the body so that loose fabric doesn't get caught on the equipment or the obstacles you are riding on.

Food and water

Bringing along food and water is especially important during hot months and long rides. To keep hydrated you will want separate water for everyone in your party. Take care to fit in water breaks as you ride. A light snack will also come in handy during longer rides to ward off hunger and lightheadedness caused by overexertion.

Riding partner or group

The fun of ATV riding near Zion is best enjoyed in the company of good friends and family. While exploring on your own can be exciting, the true magic happens when you share the views and obstacles with others. Whether you bring along a small group or an entire convoy, we guarantee you’ll have a blast when surrounded by the ones you love.

Guided tours

When ATV riding near Zion, a guided tour is a great way to explore. These tour guides are familiar with the routes and areas and can give you the most out of your trip. Whether you want a fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping tour or a slower, scenic drive your tour guide will know how to deliver. Your guide will take you to certain stops that are best for viewing the landscape and various rock formations. This allows you to get the best pictures and create the best memories possible. If driving isn't your style, you can even go on tours where your guide is the driver. You’ll be able to ride along as a passenger, usually in a UTV, and take in all the sights without the worry of making a driving error. The different options of guided tours mean there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Get out and ride

Going on an ATV tour near Zion is an excellent adventure for so many reasons. Riding ATVs allows you to take in the scenery without extreme physical stress. You can choose to take an ATV tour to give yourself a break from the more strenuous activities available in Zion National Park. Enjoy as much time as you like exploring the Zion area on a vehicle that can handle anything the terrain has throws its way.

1 Week, 5 Utah National Parks: A Curated Road Trip Itinerary

In just one eye-popping, mind-blowing, camera-clicking week, experience all of utah’s mighty 5..

  • Visit our facebook
  • Visit our pinterest

You may have heard, Utah is home to some pretty amazing national parks. And by amazing we mean jaw-dropping, breathtaking, heart-racing stuff. Cliffs, hoodoos and pillars made of candy colored rock; slot canyons, natural arches and verdant valleys. The scenery goes on and on and on.

So obviously you’d like to see for yourself, did nature really design a valley of castle turrets? Can a bridge of rock be held up by sheer willpower? Yes and yes, and we have a customizable Utah national parks itinerary to prove it. Use our free PDF map download to navigate your road trip through Utah’s Mighty 5 in one fell swoop. Well, a 1,000-mile scenic drive, gallons of drinking water and miles of hiking swoop. Tuh-MAY-toe, tuh-MAH-toe.

What's so great about that arch on Utah license plates? See for yourself in Arches National Park.

Travel tips

Before throwing your hiking shoes and sunhat into your carry-on, take care of a few details.

  • Buy an America the Beautiful park pass; the $80 fee covers entrance to all the national parks, saving you some cash for souvenir T-shirts. Get your pass through the National Park Service .
  • Make park reservations. Arches requires a timed-entry ticket from April through October; visit Recreation.gov to make your vehicle reservation. Some hikes in Zion have a permit lottery; sign up at Recreation.gov .
  • April to October is peak season: Make camping or hotel reservations well in advance.
  • Check the weather . It gets HOT during the summer months; pack appropriate clothing, sturdy footwear, reusable water bottles and plenty of sunscreen.
  • Plan to start your days early. Most people visit the park between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; go during the off hours for cooler temps and fewer crowds. Plus, the lighting is better for your Insta pics.
  • Remember, you can come back! It’s impossible to hike every trail in one park in just a day or two, let alone all five. So plan what you can reasonably do this time around. And don’t worry, the scenery has been around for thousands of years, it’ll be here for you next time.

Accommodations

You can experience the outdoor wonders in three ways: fully immersive, semi-immersive and I-need-a-good-night’s-sleep immersive. If you want the deep dive experience — dirt in your shoes, campfire smell in your clothes — you can set up a tent in or near the national parks.

If you want to dip your toes in the wilderness but still want a mattress, consider renting an RV, campervan or camper trailer . But, if you’re more of a hot shower, hot tub kind of traveler, there are hotels and cabins , either inside the parks or in nearby towns. Can’t decide? Try glamping , camping-like lodging with some luxury hotel amenities.

Arrivals and Departures

The national parks are located in the southern half of Utah, so the two closest international airports are in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. Plan your travel as a round trip, or fly into one city and leave from the other. Pick up your rental vehicle and let your Utah national parks road trip begin.

Introduce yourself to Zion along the Riverside Walk.

Day One: Airport to Zion National Park

  • Salt Lake City to Zion: 313 miles, 4.5 hours
  • Las Vegas to Zion: 168 miles, 3 hours
  • Lodging: Camping (spots inside the park fill quickly), hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, glamping

We suggest starting your Utah national parks road trip at Zion , when your legs are the freshest; there are some serious hikes here. In fact, there are so many swoon-worthy hikes at this park, it’s hard to choose just one. Or two. Or three. There’s a reason Zion sees some 5 million visitors every year. Plan on spending at least two days, if you can, to soak up all the scenery. And hey, if you decide to stay even longer, we totally get it.

Temple of Sinawava

After checking into your accommodations, head over to the park to stretch your legs on a warmup hike. Catch a free shuttle at the Visitor Center; it travels the length of Canyon Scenic Drive, with stops at the Zion Lodge and the trailheads.

Stay on until the last stop, Temple of Sinawava, and take the Riverside Walk for the perfect introduction to the park. The paved, 2-mile (round trip) walk takes you along the Virgin River and into a canyon. You’ll see hanging gardens, weeping walls and maybe some wildlife.

This trail ends where the Narrows hike begins. If it’s open and you have sturdy shoes, step into the river and walk the first portion of the hike. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to catch the shuttle back or you’ll be walking an extra nine miles. Fuel up for tomorrow at one of Springdale’s many eateries.

  • Grilled grub: Camp Outpost, Whiptail Grill
  • Fancy fixin’s: Spotted Dog, King’s Landing Bistro
  • Family fare: Zion Pizza & Noodle, Porter’s

Get the best view in Zion National Park from Angels Landing.

Day Two: Zion

If you can get a permit, hike Angels Landing . It has a lot of uphill, steep switchbacks and some sheer drop-offs, but the view of the canyon from way up there? Matchless. Plan on taking several hours for the 5-mile hike. Pack a lunch to enjoy at the top; it’s definitely a better view than any rooftop restaurant can offer. Be sure to pack out all your trash. Register for permits with the National P ark Service .

If you didn’t get a permit, there are plenty of other (and easier) hikes . We recommend Emerald Pools . You’ll see three natural ponds and some waterfalls, separated by a short climb through desert vegetation. The lower pool is a fairly easy hike; it’s a bit more work to get to the other two, but the trail is easy to follow. At the upper pool, cool off in the grotto surrounded by enormous, weeping rock walls.

If you still have some energy, you may want to try another short but noteworthy hike . When you're properly worn out for the day, head back to Springdale for dinner, then maybe catch a show at the Bumbleberry Inn .

Day Three: Zion to Bryce Canyon

  • Zion to Bryce: 2 hours, 84 miles
  • Lodging : Campgrounds, cabins, B&Bs, glamping

Next stop, Bryce Canyon . Drive back into Zion, heading east on scenic Highway 9 toward Mt. Carmel. You’ll drive through the mile-long Zion-Mt. Carmel tunnel. In addition to gaining a mad respect for 1920s sandstone blasters, you may catch a glimpse of some bighorn sheep through the built-in windows.

Make one last stop before you leave the area: Checkerboard Mesa . Imagine a giant sat down to do his math homework and got a bit carried away drawing lines. Then, on to Bryce.

Note: Oversize vehicles, such as RVs, are only allowed through the tunnel during limited hours and must pay an additional fee. Read more about restrictions at the National Park Service .

Walk among sandstone towers in Bryce Canyon.

Bryce is Nice

Remember when you tried to make an epic sandcastle? Well, Bryce Canyon did it first. See an entire valley of the tallest, coolest, colorfulest hoodoos on a walk from Sunset Point to Sunrise Point.

If your legs are still a bit wobbly from Zion, take the Mossy Cave Trail , an easy 1-mile round trip among the spires. Another option is the Bristlecone Loop Trail , which will give you a bird’s-eye view. A little more challenging, the Navajo Loop is the most popular trail in the park; you’ll descend 800 feet into the heart of the hoodoos.

Got more stamina than that bighorn sheep you saw on the drive over? Try the 8.3-mile Fairyland Loop . You’ll hike down into the pink and white canyons, see natural amphitheaters and be surrounded by hoodoos. No need for wings, but you may wish you had some.

Park your tired puppies back in the car and head over to the tiny town of Tropic for some tasty respite. Steaks, house specials, Lavender sponge cake and a wine menu await you at Stone Hearth Grille . For more casual fare, stay in Bryce Canyon City for Ruby’s Inn Cowboy’s Buffet and Steak Room .

The vistas are wide and grand in Canyonlands. Photo by Chad Hurst

Day Four: Canyonlands

  • Bryce to Canyonlands: 4 hours 20 minutes, 256 miles
  • Lodging : camping, hotels, cabins, glamping

Are you ready to mumble? Under your breath in awe, that is. Definitely not because your quads and hammies are jiggly; they can rest on the drive. Pull out our map of Utah national parks and head toward Moab. It’s the home base for Canyonlands and Arches.

Where Bryce seems like fine handiwork, Canyonlands was made with broader strokes. Get an overview of Utah’s largest national park from the Grand View Overlook . The easy hike takes you up a 1-mile sandstone stairway — to heaven? Just about. It ends at a mesa with an unobstructed view of Monument Basin. Be aware, while the path is wide, there are sheer cliffs.

Catch a perfectly framed sunrise at Mesa Arch.

Mesa Arch is another sweet spot for sweeping vistas, evident by the dozens of photographers shooting here at sunrise. The 27-foot long arch is so obliging, it perfectly frames your photos of the La Sal mountains. It’s worth squeezing into your day no matter the hour, since the trail is only 0.6 miles round trip. Hint: Walk to the arch clockwise, then retrace your steps back to avoid some of the stone steps.

If you’re visiting Canyonlands in the spring or winter, consider hiking the Confluence Overlook Trail , a moderate, 11-mile round trip. You’ll do some scrabbling up and down rocky slopes but it’s mostly flat. The payoff is the vista, 1,000 feet above the spot where the Green River and Colorado River come together. We don’t recommend it for a summer’s day; the trail is fully exposed — no shade — and the heat can be brutal.

The Confluence Overlook Trail is long, but the views are unparalleled. Photo by Chad Hurst

Even if you’re camping, head to Moab for some dinner and a casual walk down its charming Main Street. For a small town, there’s a surprisingly large assortment of dining options, from traditional kebabs at Sultan Mediterranean Grill to curry from Thai Bella Moab.

Day Five: Arches

  • Canyonlands to Arches: 29 minutes, 26 miles

Just half an hour away from Canyonlands, Arches has mesas, buttes and some wiiiide, gravity defying arches. The most popular — so popular it can be seen on one-third of Utah’s license plates — is Delicate Arch. It’s not an easy hike to see it; there are some steep stretches on the 3-mile trip. But you’ll be rewarded by a magnificent, solitary arch standing in a bowl of sandstone. Wax as poetic as you like, it’ll be fitting.

Visit one of the world's longest natural bridge in Arches.

Actually, rare beauties are a thing for Arches. You’ll understand what we mean when you head over to Landscape Arch ; it’s the fifth longest natural bridge in the world. The slab of rock spans 290 feet, but it is only 18 feet wide. How does it stay up? No idea.

Day Six: Canyonlands or Arches

Have time to stick around for another day? You could take another hike in Arches, or head back to Canyonlands. Or consider some activities nearby such as white-water rafting , kayaking and off-roading .

Drive on to the town of Torrey, just outside Capitol Reef, for the night so you can get an early start in the morning.

Day Seven: Capitol Reef and Home

Park logistics.

Arches to Capitol Reef: 2 hours, 133 miles

Lodging : camping, glamping, hotels

The final stop on our Utah national park itinerary is Capitol Reef National Park . This compact park is no slouch in rock sculptures, either.

Reach for the stars at Cassidy Arch, named for a local outlaw.

First hike: A moderate 3.5 mile climb to Cassidy Arch . It’s a big one — standing 400 feet tall. It’s pretty photogenic, too, much like the movie star who played the arch’s namesake, Butch Cassidy.

Next up, a moderately easy jaunt up to the Hickman Bridge . The 2-mile round trip trek includes fantastic scenery along the way, culminating in not just one, but TWO arches.

Grab a late lunch outside the park at Capitol Burger, a food truck serving gourmet burgers (find its exact location for the day on its Facebook page). Then settle your trail-worn body into your vehicle, crank up the air, choose your playlist and head back to the airport.

Home Logistics

Capitol Reef to Salt Lake City: 3 hours 23 minutes, 218 miles

Capitol Reef to Las Vegas: 5 hours, 327 miles

On the long drive back, make your case for which national park deserves a second, longer look. Utah.com will be here to help you plan your next trip and all your other excursions around our state.

ZION NATIONAL PARK

Zion National Park is an American  national park  located in southwestern  Utah  near the town of  Springdale . A prominent feature of the 229-square-mile (590 km2) park is  Zion Canyon , which is 15 miles (24 km) long and up to 2,640 ft (800 m) deep. The canyon walls are reddish and tan-colored  Navajo Sandstone  eroded by the North Fork of the  Virgin River.  Located at the junction of the  Colorado Plateau ,  Great Basin , and  Mojave Desert  regions, the park has a unique  geography  and a variety of  life zones  that allow for unusual plant and animal diversity. Numerous plant species as well as 289 species of birds, 75 mammals (including 19 species of  bat ), and 32 reptiles inhabit the park's four life zones:  desert ,  riparian ,  woodland , and  coniferous forest . Zion National Park includes  mountains ,  canyons ,  buttes ,  mesas ,  monoliths ,  rivers ,  slot canyons , and  natural arches .

The  geology of the Zion and Kolob canyons area  includes nine  formations  that together represent 150 million years of mostly  Mesozoic -aged  sedimentation . At various periods in that time warm, shallow seas, streams, ponds and lakes, vast deserts, and dry near-shore environments covered the area. Uplift associated with the creation of the  Colorado Plateau  lifted the region 10,000 feet (3,000 m) starting 13 million years ago.

The park is located in southwestern  Utah  in  Washington ,  Iron  and  Kane  counties. Geomorphically, it is located on the  Markagunt  and  Kolob  plateaus, at the intersection of three North American geographic provinces: the  Colorado Plateau , the  Great Basin , and the  Mojave Desert . The northern part of the park is known as the  Kolob Canyons  section and is accessible from  Interstate 15 , exit 40. The 8,726-foot (2,660 m) summit of  Horse Ranch Mountain  is the highest point in the park.

Streams in the area take rectangular paths because they follow jointing planes in the rocks. [13]  The  stream gradient  of the  Virgin River , whose North Fork flows through Zion Canyon in the park, ranges from 50 to 80 feet per mile (9.5 to 15.2 m/km) (0.9–1.5%)—one of the steepest stream gradients in North America.

The road into  Zion Canyon  is 6 miles (9.7 km) long, ending at the Temple of Sinawava, which is named for the coyote god of the  Paiute  Indians. [15]  The canyon becomes more narrow near the Temple and a hiking trail continues to the mouth of  The Narrows , a gorge only 20 feet (6 m) wide and up to 2,000 feet (610 m) tall. [16]  The Zion Canyon road is served by a free shuttle bus from early April to late October and by private vehicles the other months of the year. Other roads in Zion are open to private vehicles year-round.

The east side of the park is served by  Zion-Mount Carmel Highway  ( SR-9 ), which passes through the Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel and ends at  Mount Carmel . On the east side of the park, notable park features include  Checkerboard Mesa  and  The East Temple .

The Kolob Terrace area, northwest of Zion Canyon, features a  slot canyon  called  The Subway , and a panoramic view of the entire area from Lava Point. The Kolob Canyons section, further to the northwest near  Cedar City , features  Tucupit Point  and one of the world's  longest natural arches ,  Kolob Arch .- Wikipedia

Over 15 Epic Things to do in Zion with Kids

Z ion is one of our country’s most visited national parks. An oasis in Southern Utah’s red rock country, this national park is an all-season destination. So it should be no surprise that there are so many great things to do in Zion with kids!

Zion is the most popular of the Utah National Parks because it is within a day’s drive of several metropolitan areas.  Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Salt Lake are all within a day’s drive.

Zion’s gateway city of Springdale offers several family-friendly lodging and dining options, as well as a free shuttle that has various stops around town.

Things to do in Zion With Kids

When to visit zion.

The great news is that there is no bad time to visit Zion National Park with kids. The best time to go entirely depends on what is important to you.

Zion receives four million visitors per year. Most visit the park between April and September. But there is still plenty to enjoy in Zion during the winter.

Most trails stay open in the winter (subject to winter storms) and crowds are nonexistent. Plus, if you manage to catch Zion during a snowfall, you will be graced with tremendous beauty.

Another bonus of visiting Zion in the winter is that you can drive in Zion Canyon and directly to trailheads.

Check out our full guide to visiting in Zion in winter .

Outside of winter, the park service closes off the main road into Zion Canyon to public traffic and operates a free shuttle service.

During the spring and fall, hiking in Zion is awesome. The weather can be absolutely beautiful and the trails are begging to be explored. It can still be crowded, especially during Spring Break.

Zion is one of our picks for the best Spring Break destinations for families .

Summer is a very popular time to visit given the school break, but the weather can be downright hot! If you are going to hike, go early.

When the summer heat arrives, the Virgin River does help keep visitors cool. It is an ideal time for tubing or hiking through the park’s legendary Narrows.

See all five of Utah’s national parks with our Utah National Park Road Trip Itinerary .

Zion Visitor Center and Parking

As with all national parks, your first stop should be Zion’s visitor center.

You can either take the free shuttle from Springdale to the visitor center or park in the lot (which can fill up by mid-morning during busy weekends).

Zion’s visitor center features several interesting displays about the park, a gift shop/bookstore, and a free water bottle refill station. This is a great place to get current weather forecasts, especially during the summer monsoon season.

It is also where your kids can pick up their free Junior Ranger booklets. Activities in the book are broken down by age group and the reward for a completed booklet is a coveted Junior Ranger badge!

Things to do in Zion with Kids- Hikes

There are several great trails in Zion that offer something for all ages. From the stroller friendly Riverside Walk to the harrowing cliffs of Angels Landing which are best reserved for daring teens, this park has it all.

Lower Emerald Pool

Lower Emerald Pools is an easy trail that is suitable for all ages. The 0.6-mile trail begins across the street from Zion Lodge and heads back into a canyon to a grotto where water runs over the edge of the rocks above and into a set of pools.

Much of the trail is paved, which is nice for families with strollers. Expect to be sharing the trail with quite a few people during the high season.

This trail is accessed via the Zion Lodge shuttle stop.

Upper Emerald Pools

The Upper Emerald Pools trail is accessed via the Lower Emerald Pool trail and passes the middle and upper pools. This trail is very popular, especially on weekends, so arrive early.

The 0.5 mile uphill from Lower Emerald Pool to the Upper Emerald Pools, and does involve a little bit of rock scrambling. Still, I have seen kids of all ages on this trail.

Kayenta Trail

The one-mile (one way) Kayenta Trail is quiet in comparison to the Emerald Pool trails. This trail is best when combined with the Lower and Upper Emerald Pools.

Visit the Emerald Pools first. Then, when you begin to backtrack from the Upper Emerald Pools, keeps your eyes out for the Kayenta Trail. Follow the Kayenta Trail downhill for sprawling views of Zion Canyon and the Virgin River.

The Kayenta Trail ends near the Grotto shuttle stop.

Weeping Rock

The Weeping Rock trail is more of a short but steep walk (.4 miles round trip) than a hike.

The paved path takes you along a creek to a mossy, dripping alcove that is both pretty and refreshingly cool during the summer heat. Expect to take about 30 minutes on this trail.

Weeping Rock can be accessed via the Weeping Rock shuttle stop.

Riverside Walk

The Riverside Walk follows the North Fork of the Virgin River one mile into Zion Canyon. It is a flat, paved path but there are plenty of opportunities to play in or near the river along the way.

This popular trail ends where the Zion Narrows Trail begins. It is a great option for families with children in strollers.

Riverside Walk is accessed via the Temple of Sinawava stop on the Zion Canyon Shuttle.

The Zion Narrows

At the end of the Riverside Walk you will find The Narrows , a deep canyon cut by the Virgin River. This epic hike is almost entirely through cold water which can be refreshing during the heat of the summer.

Close toed shoes and a walking stick are essentials. It is also absolutely vital that you have a clear understanding of current weather conditions. The canyon should absolutely be avoided if there is a flash flood watch or warning.

In some sections the water can be ankle deep while in others it is high enough to require some swimming (especially earlier in the summer). Families can choose to hike in for several miles or just opt for a short out-and-back experience.

Here is a great guide to hiking the Narrows .

The Narrows are accessed via the Temple of Sinawava stop on the Zion Canyon Shuttle.

Pa’rus Trail

The Pa’rus Trail trail is about 1.9 miles from end to end and is ideal for walking, running, strollers, and bike riding.

It is especially wonderful at dusk when the sunlight makes the red rock glow. Wildlife such as wild turkeys, mule deer, chipmunks, and various birds can be spotted.

Shuttle stops at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, the Zion Human History Museum, and at Canyon Junction can be found along this trail. This makes it easy to hike the trail one-way and then ride the shuttle back.

Angels Landing

If you have a fear of heights, the hike to Angels Landing is not the hike for you. This hike is a steep, 2.5 mile climb to a narrow view point with spectacular views.

Older children can handle the first two miles of the trail, but the last .5 mile is extremely narrow and requires holding on to cables with steep drops on either side.

I personally do not recommend taking kids on the final portion. Heck, I wouldn’t even do the final portion and I am experienced hiker! Still, people take their kids on this trail every day.

Note: Due to the overwhelming popularity of this trail (thank you social media) and safety concerns there is now a limit on the number of people who can hike this trail daily. A permit is required and the permit is handed out via a lottery system. You can find all the details on the park website .

Angels Landing is accessed via The Grotto stop on the Zion Canyon Shuttle.

Canyon Overlook Trail

If you are headed out of Zion towards the northeast and on to other special spots in Southern Utah like Bryce Canyon National Park , you will have to pass through the famed Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel.

Located just past the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel on Highway 9, is the Canyon Overlook Trail.

This trail does feature some steep drop-offs but those portions are mostly fenced. The trail is one mile in length and offers spectacular views of Pine Creek Canyon and lower Zion Canyon.

Trekaroo Tip: The parking lot for this trail can fill up quickly so it is best to attempt it early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

More Things to do in Zion with Kids

Explore zion by bike.

If the idea of dealing with the Zion shuttle gives you a headache before you have even arrived, consider renting E-bikes and exploring Zion Canyon on two wheels instead. We love our foldable Centris ebikes that are perfect for travel. We throw them in the back of our car or camper van on road trips and they always come in handy.

Zion Outfitters rents E-bikes, regular adult bikes, and regular childrens bikes. Helmets are included with rentals. Biking in Zion Canyon is quite safe because there are very few cars on the road. You can also place bikes on the shuttles at any stop if your group gets tired of pedaling.

It is very easy to pedal to a trail and hike because bike racks are available at the shuttle stops where the trailheads begin. Locks are included with E-bike rentals

Note: Children must be at least 14 to rent an E-bike.

Enjoy the Zion Night Sky

The night sky in Zion is filled with infinitely more stars than most of use are used to seeing at home. It is impressive to look up in the evening and take it all in, but what exactly are you looking at? Stargazing Zion specializes in creating exciting and educational experiences for families eager to learn more!

They have professional astronomers, state-of-the-art telescopes, zero-gravity pods and blankets to keep you cozy while you gaze up at the sky, binoculars, and even deep space photography to help you capture your memorable evening and share with others. Their two-hour experiences will have you appreciating the beauty of the universe even more than before.

Zion Human History Museum

The Zion Human History Museum highlights the human history of Zion, from Native Americans to early pioneer settlers to the early days of the park’s founding.

The museum has its own shuttle stop and shows a free, 22-minute video that gives a nice overview of Zion National Park.

Kids can watch this video as an alternative to the ranger-led program participation requirement to earn their Zion Junior Ranger badge.

Tubing on the Virgin River

Tubing the Virgin River in the town of Springdale is an especially popular May through July. You can rent tubes from Zion Outfitter or bring your own. Zion Outfitter will not rent tubes to children younger than 12.

Remember to practice good water safety, especially with children. I do not recommend this activity unless your kids are strong swimmers because there are some small rapids and chances of flipping.

Trekaroo Tip: Wearing closed toed-shoes while tubing is highly recommended. There are some shallow spots and lots of rocks.

Canyoneering

If you are looking for one of the most adventurous things to do in Zion with kids, your family should give canyoneering a go. You will have a blast rappelling in narrow slot canyons, scrambling over rocks, and wading through water on a guided half day or full day trip

Zion Outfitter has a special Family Adventure program designed for groups with kids younger than 12 or you can opt for the traditional full or half day Canyon Adventure with older kids.

Both programs are great for people who don’t have canyoneering experience.

Take a Jeep or ATV Tour

Get off road on an adventure in the stunning red rock wilds around Zion National Park. There are so many options for families, from drive-your-own ATVs to guided Jeep Tours.

Zion Off-Road Tours has both! Jeep tours can accommodate up to five people and allow children as young as seven. ATV drivers must be at least 18 and passengers can be as young as seven.

Book your family’s epic Zion Jeep Tour .

Horseback Riding

See Zion the way the pioneers did- on horseback! One hour rides are available which follow the Virgin River to the Court of the Patriarchs. Children as young as seven are welcome on these horseback tours.

Older children (10 and up) can join the three hour tour which climbs 500 feet and offers nice views of the southern end of the park.

Where to Stay Near Zion National Park

Most people visiting Zion National Park either camp inside the park or stay in the gateway city of Springdale which sits at the park boundary.

There is a free shuttle that stops at several hotels in town.

Camping at the Watchman Campground

The most popular campground in Zion National Park is the  Watchman Campground .  The campground has tent and RV sites, clean bathrooms, and flush toilets. It is located close to the visitor center and town of Springdale.

There are several spots next to the Virgin River and some sites have more shade than others. The campground does not have showers but there are clean pay showers in town a short distance away.

Family Friendly Lodging in Zion

All the hotels listed (with the exception of Zion Lodge) are located in the town of Springdale and within walking distance to restaurants and shopping.

Zion Lodge is the official four-walled lodging within the park boundaries . There are hotel rooms as well as cabins.

Zion Lodge is also a great spot to shop for gifts in the lodge’s gift shop or enjoy lunch on the lodge’s expansive lawn. Castle Dome Café, the lodge’s cafeteria counter, sells burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, pizza, and salads.

Cable Mountain Lodge

Cable Mountain Lodge  rooms feature full kitchens, large living areas, and plenty of space for large families in their suites.

Its pool area features magical views red rock canyon walls, making it a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.

Rocking chairs on the patio also offer views of the vibrant Zion cliffs. Cable Mountain Lodge is a short walk from the park entrance.

Cliffrose Springdale

Accommodations at Cliffrose Springdale range from standard hotel rooms to full suites with separate bedrooms and kitchen facilities. This property is now own by Hilton so you can rack up some rewards points with your stay!

Highlights include a heated outdoor pool and waterfall hot tub, playground equipment, sandbox stocked with toys, and beach access along the Virgin River. This property is within walking distance of the Zion National Park Visitor Center.

La Quinta Inn & Suites

La Quinta is one of the newer hotels in Springdale and it is located about one mile from Zion’s visitor center along Springdale’s main drag. The shuttle picks up about 100 yards away.

Rooms include a microwave, fridge, and high speed internet access. Your stay includes a free breakfast which features the normal continental breakfast stuff along with homemade cinnamon rolls, waffles, and breakfast sandwiches. There is a pool on site.

Where to Eat Near Zion National Park

Castle dome café.

This casual, cafeteria-style café is the only restaurant inside of Zion National Park. It is located at Zion Lodge.

The café serves up included burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, pizza, salads, and ice cream. A dining patio is located outside.

Zion Pizza and Noodle

This casual dining establishment specializes in pizza and pasta. Seating is available inside and out.

Zion Pizza and Noodle can get crowded during the evenings of the high season so you might want to consider calling in your order and then taking your pizza and pasta as take out and having a picnic in a nearby park.

Wildcat Willie’s and Bumbleberry Bakery

This country-themed restaurant features long benches, great BBQ meals, and a family-friendly atmosphere. The restaurant does have a kids menu.

The little Bumbleberry Bakery, tucked into the corner of the building that houses Wildcat Willies , is famous for its pies. They also serve up turnovers, muffins, brownies, and more.

Jack’s Sports Grill

Jack’s Sports Grill is another popular option. Their eclectic menu features salads, sandwiches, rice bowls, BBQ, burgers, and brats. Their location is family-friendly and a fun spot to catch the game.

Oscar’s Cafe

Oscar’s Cafe  is a good place to eat if you want a variety of options. They have TexMex options like burritos and shrimp tacos, but they also have ribs, pork chops, burgers, sandwiches, and salads.

Oscar’s a great choice for breakfast as well. They serve up breakfast burritos, omelets, and more!

Kolob Canyons Area of Zion National Park

The Kolob Canyon portion of Zion National Park is located off Interstate 15 in between St. George and Cedar City. It is a great place to stop on a road trip to stretch your legs and visit this less visited portion of the park.

Kolob Canyons Visitor Center

The small Kolob Canyons visitor center is just off the highway and has clean toilets, maps, guide, and a small exhibit about geology. You must check in here to either purchase or show your National Park pass before heading further up Kolob Canyons Road.

Kolob Canyons Viewpoint & Timber Creek Overlook

This site sits at an elevation of 6,200 feet in elevation and is open year round. It serves as a picnic ground, overlook, and trailhead for the Timber Creek Overlook hike..

The Timber Creek Overlook hike is just one mile in length and has plenty of rocks at the overlook for the kids to climb on. The view at trail’s end is expansive and looks down on Timber Creek and the surrounding wilds.
