How the Town of Batman, Turkey, Got Its Name

Southeastern Turkey is, on the whole, a beautiful land of rugged mountains, wildflowers, and waterfalls. Its caves and ruins are some of the world’s oldest archaeological sites. But the region’s third largest city is somewhat off the tourist trail. It’s a sprawl of nondescript cement buildings on a treeless plateau of no real historical interest—a “charmless modern town,” according to the travel guide I consulted. If visitors come here, they come for only one reason—the town’s unusual name. Holy Turkish toponymy, Batman!

For centuries, Batman was just a sleepy village called Iluh, but in the 1940s, oil (black gold! Turkey tea!) was discovered in the area, and Iluh—now just a mile or two south of the nation’s largest petroleum field—became a boomtown almost overnight. In 1957, it was renamed for the nearby Batman River, a tributary of the Tigris.

"So where did the Batman River gets its name?", superhero geeks everywhere demand to know at this point. In Turkey and Persia, a batman is an ancient unit of measure—in fact, the word is still defined in plenty of English dictionaries not as “a caped crusader with a cool utility belt” but “a Turkish unit equal to 16.96 pounds.” But most commentators believe that the Batman River actually took its name as a shortening of “Bati Raman,” a nearby mountain.

Batman, Turkey, made world news in 2008 when its mayor, Huseyin Kalkan, announced to the media that he was planning lawsuits against Warner Bros. and director Christopher Nolan, makers of the Dark Knight movie trilogy. “There is only one Batman in the world," he told reporters. "The American producers used the name of our city without informing us." He seemed unconcerned by the fact that the first Batman comics appeared in early 1939, almost two decades before his city began to use the name.

No lawsuit ever materialized, and it became clear that this was merely a canny publicity move by Mayor Kalkan, whose city had taken some media hits lately. I wonder if he knows that there’s a much more famous world city that also came very close to having a legal beef with DC Comics. Melbourne, Australia, was founded by a rancher named John Batman, and so one of the names tossed around for the settlement in its early days was “Batmania.” Personally, I’m disappointed that this didn’t happen. Batman, Turkey and Batmania, Australia would have made a real dynamic duo.

Malabadi Bridge

Situated on the Diyarbakir–Batman route is this bridge. The distance from the city center is about 7 km. Artukoğulları constructed this bridge in 1147. Today, it is not feasible to go here due to the construction of a new bridge. The niches on the bridge are decorated with images of humans, animals, and the sun. However, it remains in its original splendor.

Imam Abdullah Shrine

This tomb is situated at the Hasankeyf Bridge’s entrance on the slope to the left. This is the mausoleum of Imam Abdullah, a brave warrior who was martyred during Hasankeyf’s siege. Abdullah, the Imam Hz. He is the son of Muhammad’s uncle, Caferi Tayyar. In the area, Imam Abdullah is incredibly well-liked. The folks in the area come here to pray and visit this tomb.

Zeynel Bey Tomb

The Hasankeyf neighborhood is home to this tomb. The mausoleum belongs to Uzun Hasan, the ruler of Akkoyunlu, and is his son’s. In 1243, Zeynel Bey lost his life in the Battle of Otlukbeli. Uzun Hasan had a tomb constructed for his son following the conflict. This tomb is unique from others since it is constructed of stone set atop brick.

Mor Kiryakus Monastery

Our district center is situated in Besiri’s Ayranci Village – one of the most famous Batman attractions. With 365 rooms, this monastery is the oldest building that is Christian. Built in 457, it was. Christians founded it as a university in the second century. For many years, Christians have been served by this temple, which was later opened as a belief center. He worked for the community until 1940. He was assigned to churches in various areas and educated educators here.

It was left to its own fate after 1940, when the city’s Christian population vanished. His expression conveys the devastation caused by years. It was just recently fixed. Afterwards, a museum was created out of it. There are numerous Christian-themed exhibits here.

True or false: There's a city in Turkey called Batman. Any guesses?

The answer is "true"—and there's good news and bad news in that. The good news is that indeed, there's a city in the world called Batman, even if it is deep inside Turkey , a country the Batman franchise didn't penetrate until well after its creation in 1939. Indeed, while the naming of Batman took place well after the birth of Batman, the identical nature of the two is purely coincidental.

The History of Batman's Name

Batman is a city (and province) today, but as recently as 60 years ago, it was a village of only a few thousand people. And, perhaps more interesting than that, both also had a different name: The village that became Batman city, you see, was called Iluh, while its province was called Siirt, until the late 1950s.

Now, if you know anything about Batman (the character), you might be scratching your head. Since this renaming occurred almost two decades after the introduction of Batman, couldn't it be more than a coincidence that the Turkish city now bears its name? Unfortunately not.

Batman city and province took their current names not because of DC comic superheroes, but because of the Batman River that runs through it. 

Things to Do in Batman, Turkey

Not surprisingly, the things to do in Batman, Turkey are limited—for most of the types of tourists visiting Turkey anyway. Indeed, while some Roman ruins exist on the outskirts of town, it's well known that they pale in comparison to the ones you can find elsewhere in the country.

In fact—and I'm not making this up—the most popular activity for tourists in Batman is to find one of the "Batman" signs beside the highway that leads you into the city and pose for pictures beside it.

Owing to its location (relatively) near the Iraqi border, Batman has a substantial population of Kurdish people and can be a good place to learn about Kurdish culture if you don't care to cross into Iraq proper. People in Batman are actually extremely open to speaking about Kurdish issues, which is unique in Turkey, where the political landscape makes even candid discussions about this topic taboo, to say the least.

Like many other cities in interior Turkey, Batman is not a party hotspot—it can be difficult or even impossible to find alcohol here. Interestingly, Batman is home to a restaurant with an important social mission, one Bruce Wayne would certainly be proud of. Known as "Labor Women" in English, it's a great spot for either tea or breakfast, and donates its proceed to help vulnerable women, both in terms of addressing their immediate needs as well as passing legislation to protect their rights.

How to Visit Batman Turkey

In spite of my fondness for Turkish Airlines, this post is neither an advertisement for nor an endorsement of them. I mention this disclaimer because of what I'm about to say next: The easiest way to travel to Batman is to take one of the daily Turkish Airlines nonstops from Istanbul's Atatürk Airport (or, alternatively, low-cost Pegasus Airways from Sabiha Göçken Airport, located across the Bosphorous in the Asian part of Istanbul ).

If you don't take flights available from other Turkish air gateways, namely Ankara and Izmir, your best bet is to travel to Batman from cities located in surrounding Anatolia state—namely, Diyarbakır or Kurtalan.

Batman (pronounced as baat-maan , not like the name of the superhero; Kurdish: Iluh ) is a city in southeastern Anatolia . It is the capital of an important oil producing province.

A village of a couple of hundred people in 1950s when petroleum was discovered in the surrounding mountains, Batman has grown ever since, having a population of several hundred thousands today. Large numbers of immigrants from surrounding region also contributed to quick urbanization, usually with no respect to building codes. Therefore, most of the city is slums surrounding a plaza by the railway station in the downtown and an oil refinery south of the station.

The city's name is, unsurprisingly, entirely unrelated to that of the famed fictional superhero. Instead, it is theorized to be a shortened form of Batı Raman , i.e. "Western Raman (Mountains)" where petroleum was first found in the vicinity. In fact, the city's name actually postdates that of the comic book, as the character Batman first appeared in 1939, while the former village of Iluh was only renamed in the 1950s. This didn't stop the then mayor of Batman from threatening to sue Warner Bros. in 2009 (after the release of The Dark Knight ), though no suit actually materialized.

Buses are available from various cities across Turkey, especially frequent are the services from surrounding cities such as Diyarbakir and Tatvan (at least one daily; it costs 15 TL pp from Tatvan). The bus station ( otogar ) of the city is located in the northern outskirts, about one to one and a half hour walk away from the city centre/train station.

The Guney Kurtalan Express operates three times per week between Ankara via Diyarbakır and Batman on to Kurtalan , about 40 km further east from Batman. Notice that this train do get overcrowded during early August because of huge numbers of seasonal workers taking the train to work in western Turkey during the harvest season. It might be almost impossible to find a ticket further than Diyarbakır during that season and the can be uncomfortable because of the huge numbers of passengers getting on and off the train.

Batman (Kurdish: Êlih‎) is a city in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey and the capital of Batman Province. It lies on a plateau, 540 meters (1,772 feet) above sea level, near the confluence of the Batman River and the Tigris. The Batı Raman oil field, which is the largest oil field in Turkey, is located just outside the city. Batman has a local airport and a military airbase, which was used for transit of aircraft and helicopters in some search and rescue operations of the Gulf War. However, oil fields were discovered around it in the 1940s that resulted in a rapid development of the area and in the inflow of workforce from other parts of Turkey. In 1957, the village was renamed Batman, after the river namesake, received a city status, and became a district center. Over the next 50 years, a significant amount of Batman's one-story buildings were rebuilt as multi-story buildings. As a result, its population grew to many, many times its previous size. A 511 km (318 mi) km long oil pipeline was built in 1967 from Batman to the port city of Dörtyol near the easternmost point of the Mediterranean coast in order to transport the crude oil from the Batman refinery. In 1990, the city became the capital of Batman Province. Apart from oil, which is by far the dominant commodity of the region, Batman produces beverages, processed food, chemicals, furniture, footwear, machinery and transport equipment. A university was established in 2007, Batman University, and is part of the Erasmus foreign student exchange program.

Batman’s Mor Kiryakus Monastery to serve tourism with renovation

The Mor Kiryakus Monastery , built on a 2,500 square meter area in Batman in the 5th century, is planned to be restored in three stages.

The first phase of the restoration works at the Mor Kiryakus Monastery in Beşiri district of the southeastern province of Batman has ended.

The monastery, which was built on a 2,500 square meter area by Syriac Christians in the 5th century in the village of Ayrancı on the skirts of Mount Kıra is planned to be restored in three stages.

In the first phase of the restoration, which had a cost of approximately 1.5 million Turkish Liras, the entrance door of the monastery, the entire south facade, the burial chamber, and all doors on the second floor were renewed. In the second stage of the restoration works that will start after the Eid al-Fitr, the surrounding wall will be built, the church and the central courtyard will be restored.

Beşiri Governor Sinan Aşçı said that the Mor Kiryakus Monastery will be a very important tourism center in the city with Hasankeyf.

Stating that the monastery was used as an important faith center by Syriac Christians in the past, Aşçı said that the first phase of the restoration that started approximately nine months ago was completed.

Stating that the restoration was carried out under the coordination of Batman Governorship, Dicle Development Agency, Special Provincial Administration and the Culture and Tourism Directorate, Aşçı said, “This is a settlement where citizens of two different religions have lived in coexistence for centuries. The monastery, which is the faith center of Syriac Christians, and the mosque right behind show us tolerance.” In recent years the Turkish government has stepped up efforts to restore and open churches and synagogues, including many places of worship that have had their doors shut for over a century.        

Among the restored houses of worship are the Trabzon Sümela Monastery, Armenian Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Akdamar Island in the eastern Van province, Armenian Church of St. Giragos in the southeastern Diyarbakır province, Great Synagogue of northwestern Edirne, Stipol Synagogue in Istanbul and the St. Aho Monastery in Batman.

Batman, a museum-like city, is home to the ancient Hasankeyf- a priceless iconic treasure at the Tigris River.

The archaeological excavations which have taken place at the Hallan Çemi Mound in the county of Kozluk near Batman have unearthed various ornaments, animal statues and stone tools, with these items revealing that the first settlement in the Batman region stretches back some 12,000 years. The city has played a significant part in Turkish and Islamic history and culture, and is home to a number of Turkish and Islamic works of art. The city also boasts many castle ruins on its steep hills dating back to the Byzantine period. These include Hazo, Kandil and Rabat castles in the Kozluk county while Pertükan, Bozikan and Beksi castles are in Sason county.

North of Batman the Malabadi Bridge, built in 1147, spans the Batman River. Undisturbed by time, peaceful waters still reflect the widest single-arch bridge of its day. The two guard towers once ensured the bridge’s security.

At the heart of Mesopotamia, Batman is a city like an open-air museum blending the cultural heritage of centuries on the shores of the Dicle River. The city is full of such historic treasures as the ancient city of Hasankeyf that brings the rich past of the region right to the present.

Lying along the western banks of the Dicle River (Tigris) and standing at the first crossroads where East and West embrace each other, Hasankeyf displays a spectacular combination of nature, history and culture. Throughout history it has been one of the most important places for the rulers of Mesopotamia while thousands of caves formed in the limestone on the rocky hills and in the valleys reveal that the region was inhabited by the first human beings. Having preserved their original appearance to the present day, these cave dwellings are astonishingly mysterious structures with a unique natural make-up.

The most stellar period of Mesopotamia was under Artukid rule after 1101 AD when Hasankeyf became the capital and also one of the most important centres on the Silk Road. It was known as Hısn Keyfa (Rock Castle) at that time. The bridge which once spanned the Dicle (Tigris) River and connected the two parts of the city with the ruined palace inside the citadel evokes the ghosts of a vanished dynasty. The 15th century Zeynel Bey Mausoleum, attractively decorated with turquoise tiles, shows Persian influence.
