As I’ve gotten more and more acquainted with the tiny house movement and community, I’ve learned it’s about more than simply living small. Converting and restoring old vehicles into simplistic living is something that has definitely piqued my interest over the past decade!

What Is A Box Truck Conversion And Why Try It Out?

A box truck conversion is any truck with a large cargo area that has been turned into a mobile dwelling. The most common type of box truck conversion is typically done with a U-Haul moving van, but it’s possible to use many different box truck styles, sizes, and types.

Additionally, box trucks have extremely straight surfaces. This makes adding insulation , adding wood to the ceiling and walls, and adding utilities a smidge easier than other builds. It’s also worth noting that box trucks are able to conceal things easier than other conversion types like cargo vans or skoolies because of the built-out walls. It makes it easier to tuck away things like roof vent fans or solar panels from sight.

Design Inspiration For Box Truck Camper Conversions

There are so many different ways to design a converted box truck. The biggest factor that will change how your dwelling is designed is the way the shell of your box truck is already laid out.

This isn’t a brand-new build, it’s a conversion. Therefore, it’s highly likely that there may be some features already installed in the box truck that could positively or negatively impact your overall design options.

Featured Design Inspiration For A Box Truck Conversion

There are many adventurers and dreamers out there that have already pressed the gas pedal on their own box truck conversions. I love taking a look through the design choices that others have made and pulling inspiration from other box truck builds .

Box Truck Conversion Interior Examples

A huge part of what you can do with a box truck conversion depends on the original design of the truck. One element that most box truck shells have in common is there is typically a sliding door on the back wall of the truck where the cargo is brought in and.

This is pretty ideal to use as a backdoor! If I were to convert my own box truck, I would open this sliding door all the time and let the sights and sounds of nature trickle in.

Most box truck interiors are entirely open with an attached kitchen nook and living room. It’s pretty common for box trucks to have a sleeping loft raised vertically if there isn’t room for an entire bedroom.

In my opinion, the best sleeping lofts have raised storage surrounding the sleeping nook. This could be shelves, cabinets, or a simple rack. It’s just nice to incorporate a space for essentials so you don’t have to climb up and down the loft to get what you need for the night.

Box Truck Connected Living Room And Kitchen Space

Most kitchen and living spaces are connected in a box truck camper. You can place your couch in the corner of the box truck and have it wrap around the van. You can also align it horizontally against the wall.

I think it’s smart to place the kitchen in the corner of the camper truck. You can put the oven, stove, table, and cooking furnace all at different heights.

Exterior Examples For A Box Truck Conversion

The exterior design of your box truck will also greatly depend on the type or style of box truck that you choose to purchase and the way the exterior is already laid out when you purchase it.

Box Truck Camper Van With Stairs And Ramps

Adding removeable or foldable stairs or a detachable ramp is a wise idea when designing the exterior of your box truck camper. It can give you more overall accessibility to all aspects of your box truck house.

I personally find lining part of your box truck camper entirely in wood to be one of the classiest options for your camper. This can be as simple as a wooden finish to the back of the camper van or lining the entire box truck walls and floors in a nice warm wood.

Pros And Cons Of Converting A Box Truck House

Like any alternative building style, there are pros and cons that come with choosing to convert a box truck camper into a tiny home. If you’re thinking of diving into this build, be sure to weigh the advantages and disadvantages before investing your time and resources.

• Obtaining building materials can be a challenge

How To Convert A Box Truck Into A Tiny House In Five Steps

If you’re ready to undergo your own box truck conversion, there are a couple of building steps that you’ll need to undergo. I am a huge believer that anyone can be a DIY builder if they put their mind to it, are willing to learn, and are willing to put in the time and effort to make the build happen.

1 Select A Box Truck Floorplan

First, select a design and floorplan for your box truck conversion. Make sure you have the length and width of each wall written down and that the measurements are to scale on your floorplan. Also, if you plan to include doors and windows in your build, indicate where these will be located in your initial floorplan.

2 Outline The Box Truck Conversion

Now, it’s time to mark up your used camper van to match the floorplan that you’ve drawn up. I’d recommend using chalk, paint pen, or masking tape to mark where each of the additional features will go in the camper van.

Include the placement of the bed and sleeping loft, the bathroom, and the kitchen. If you plan to make changes to features already within the used van, mark those changes as well.

3 Start Building The Walls Of The Box Truck

Once you have the visual markings in place indicating where everything will go, it’s time to begin your building process. Start with the walls when converting a standard box truck. I recommend using 2” x 4” lumber to frame the walls of the box truck. Use 3-inch deck screws and PU adhesive to construct and attach the wooden walls to the original metal walls of the truck.

4 Install Box Truck Windows And Doors

Now it’s time to add in your doors and windows . You can also use 3-inch deck screws to fasten the door frames to the walls that you’ve already constructed. My opinion is that pre-hung hollow core doors are the best for a box truck home. You can typically find these at a local hardware store.

Use deck screws to install the windows as well. When cutting holes for the doors and windows, you may want to invest in a circular saw.

5 Install Utilities In Your Box Truck Camper

Once the shell and bones of the entire truck has been completed, the last step is to install your utilities . Depending on the style of box truck that you’re converting, it’s possible that basic insulation, moisture protection, or solar panels are already installed. However, this isn’t a guarantee.

You’ll also want to make sure that you have access to fresh water since you can’t connect your box truck to a permanent water source. My best recommendation for this is to use a freshwater tank.

FAQ: Common Questions About Box Truck Camper Conversions

Converting a box truck into an RV might feel like a huge endeavor, so make sure you have all your questions answers and know what you’re getting into before biting the bullet and starting your build!

How Much Does It Cost To Convert A Box Truck Into A House?

Box truck conversions tend to cost somewhere between $30,000 and $50,000, including the initial cost of your truck. At this price, you can typically build a full mobile house with all of the embellishments, interior finishings (floors, walls, and ceilings), full utility installation, furniture, a sleeping loft, and a full kitchen.

However, if you plan to scale back your conversion and take a simpler approach, you might be able to get your total cost down to between $15,000 and $20,000. It truly depends on how many features you add and what your vision is.

What Are The Biggest Potential Challenges Of A Box Truck Conversion?

The biggest challenge with a box truck is hands-down managing the insulation. I have a pretty good friend who converted a U-Haul box truck and talked with me about the challenges of having to insulate heavily to combat the metal walls that heat up intensely in the sun.

Another challenge with a box truck conversion is getting the building materials you need into the actual truck during the build. To tackle this, my friend purchased a lift gate that he was later able to use as a porch on the end of the box truck camper.

Do Box Truck Conversions Work Well For Long Distances?

Box truck campers work fantastically for traveling long distances. Traveling cross country is what these kind of vehicles were designed to do. A typical box truck with a diesel engine can last somewhere between 250,000 and 155,000 miles, while a classic gas-powered box truck lasts around 155,000 miles.

The only downside to traveling cross-country in a converted box truck van is that the cargo area of the truck — your living space — will likely not be safe for long distance travel. It’s recommended that both the passengers and the driver alike sit in the cab section of the box truck when it’s in motion.

What Are The Different Body Style Options For A Box Truck?

• Standard Box Trucks
• Utility Box Trucks
• Refrigerated Box Trucks
• Landscaping Box Trucks
• Flatbed Box Trucks

I personally think that utility box trucks and refrigerated box trucks are the best styles for converting into a house. Standard box trucks and landscaping box trucks are fairly standard and mediocre for conversions. Flatbed box trucks are the weakest option because they do not have a fully built cargo trailer. They require more labor and extra building steps than the other styles.

Box trucks with utility beds have many advantages. They already have side dividers and pivoted backs built into the body of the truck. These can easily be converted into storage spaces or individual rooms. Most utility box trucks also already have small compartments, floor storage, and small drawers in the cargo area built in.

How Much Weight Can A Converted Box Truck House Carry?

A standard 24-ft. to 26-ft. box truck can carry up to 10,000 lbs. of gross weight. For context, a standard tiny house with wooden walls, cladding, full-size windows and doors, tile or wood floors, and all interior and exterior finishes might weigh somewhere between 3,000 and 14,000 lbs.

The small end of this range is typically a 10-foot, shed-like tiny house and at the large end is something like a 34-foot, double-decker tiny home. Keep this range and the average 10,000 lbs. limit in mind when designing a box truck home of your own.

Is It Legal To Live In A Converted Box Truck In The U.S.?

Living full-time in a converted box truck in the United States can unfortunately get a bit dicey and fully depends on the l aws in the specific state and county you plan to live in and travel to. If you plan to mount your box truck on foundation, it shouldn’t be a problem legally. The issues mainly arise when you make your box truck van mobile.

Many states have laws in place around being parked in an RV, converted van , or other type of mobile home for more than 30 days in an area that isn’t designated or approved for RV living. So, if you plan to travel in your converted box truck, your best bet is to move locations monthly. If you plan to stay somewhere longer than a month, look into what RV parks in the area allow long-term residency in a mobile camper.

Are Box Trucks The Best Choice For A DIY Conversion?

It’s difficult to choose one type of DIY or converted build that is best overall. All builds have their pros and cons!

Designed as an affordable, in-city option, the converted Ford E-350 box truck contains a study, standard shower, kitchen, gear garage, and patio.

At the start of 2021, a grad student named Jason was at the start of a big transition. Already several years into his career, he decided to change gears and pursue a master’s degree in urban planning. However, applying for graduate programs, juggling gigs, and keeping within his budget would require something affordable and flexible.

So, he picked up a shelled-out 2004 Ford E-350 box truck off Craigslist and tapped his friend, Matt Erickson of Stealth Studio , to help with the build-out. The two morphed the mini-freighter into a fully functional studio apartment, complete with a gear garage and fold-out patio.

In this tour, Jason takes us through the 125 square-foot space and its many clever innovations. The design’s functional aspects include a standard 32 x 32-inch shower, composting toilet, and full-size study. He fitted the urban studio with rooftop solar and a lithium battery setup which, considering the array of appliances and tech going on within the truck, is necessary.

“Think about your goals,” Jason said. “Then build something that works for you.” Aspiring van lifers , this one’s for you.

What is a box truck tiny house.

A Box Truck Tiny House is a truly mobile home that is built inside the back of a truck with a large, rectangular cargo area for shipping. The most recognizable example is a U-haul moving truck. In place of the original roll-up door, a permanent wall and house door is added to the rear of the box truck.

How much does a box truck tiny house cost.

There are a ton of variables that determine pricing for a box truck conversion, including the size of the truck itself. As such, we estimate each project on an individual basis and do not have set conversion packages.

Generally, the most basic of conversions for a box truck starts around $45,000. That includes removal of the rear rollup door and replacement with a wall and regular man door for entering the truck from the rear. It also includes flooring, insulated walls and ceiling, basic electrical, and basic cabinetry.

With the addition of a heater, A/C, shower, hot water, etc. prices can quickly reach the $75,000+ range.

It will surely be a night of your wildest dreams but before you go, here's everything you need to know.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- ...Are you ready for it? Taylor Swift's much-anticipated The Eras Tour arrived in Santa Clara for two nights at Levi's Stadium.

Thousands of fans from across the region and across the U.S. descended upon "Swiftie Clara" to watch the Grammy-winning singer perform at least 40 of her greatest hits.

When and where is Taylor Swift performing?

Swift is performing at Levi's Stadium located at 4900 Marie P. DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara on July 28 and July 29.

• 2 p.m. - Parking lots and the box office open
• 3:30 p.m. - VIP 1 & 2 gates open
• 4:30 p.m. - Gates open
• 6:30 p.m. - Performances by HAIM and Gracie Abrams

Can I get merch if I don't have a ticket?

Per a Levi's Stadium tweet , show day merchandise sales will be available at 2 p.m. and will remain open until the end of the show.

Merchandise will be located in Red Lot 1 as well as inside the stadium for fans with tickets. Parking will not be available in Red Lot 1 for fans without a ticket.

Fans will not be permitted to line up earlier than 2 p.m.

Restrooms and water for purchase will be available near merchandise areas.

Weather forecast

According to ABC7 News Meteorologist Drew Tuma, there definitely won't be any midnight rain but it's a forecast you know all too well for the month of July.

You can expect temps in the 60s with the sun setting around 8:20 p.m. so you may need an old cardigan.

What you can and cannot bring into Levi's Stadium

The biggest thing to know is that Levi's Stadium bag policy is that they only allow clear bags. Anything that is non-transparent is not allowed.

The only exception for a non-transparent bag is a clutch bag smaller than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches.

Approved clear bags no larger than 12" x 6" x 12". These include the following clear bags:

• Clear Backpacks
• Clear Fanny Packs
• Clear Purses
• One-gallon clear plastic zip lock type bags
• Small Clutch Bag (the size of an adult hand) (4.5" x 6.5")
• Seat Cushion

Here are a few of the things you can bring:

• Binoculars shorter than 6 inches (case prohibited)
• Cameras with 3-inch lenses or shorter (no lights, tripods, selfie-sticks or monopods)
• Diaper bags accompanying a child
• Flags smaller than 2' x 3' (No Poles). They cannot be attached to the facility in any way.
• Plastic water bottles (factory sealed, no-alcohol, less than 24 ounces)
• Reusable transparent water bottles (no-alcohol, less than 24 ounces)
• Plastic water bottles (sealed)
• Seat cushions
• Strollers (contact the nearest Playmaker if in need of storing)
• Sunscreen & hand-powered misters
• Umbrellas (no obstruction of other fans view)

What to know about parking, drop-offs at Levi's Stadium

According to the Levi's Stadium website , they recommend buying a pre-paid parking pass online and arriving early. Unfortunately, those passes are sold out on the Levi's Stadium and Ticketmaster websites.

If you were one of the lucky ones to purchase a parking pass, parking lots will likely open around 2 p.m. or 2:30 p.m.

As for dropping off a group of people, Levi's has said there will be a special parent pick-up zone on both nights but those details have yet to be released. It appears the best place to make a drop-off is Great America Parkway, between Tasman Dr. and Old Glory Lane. This is the same location rideshares will drop off concertgoers.

The pick-up location at the end of the concert is in Red Lot 7.

Can I tailgate at Levi's Stadium before or during concert?

The short answer is no. Levi's Stadium announced last week it would prohibit all tailgating for the Taylor Swift concerts and "there will be no designated viewing area outside of Levi's Stadium, Fans without event tickets will not be permitted to congregate in parking areas or on the streets."

Also if you do not have a ticket to the concert and want to listen from outside Levi's Stadium, officials say that won't be possible. Only ticketed fans will be allowed into the parking lots.

Can I wear friendship bracelets to the concert?

Originally, Levi's Stadium banned the infamous bracelets but decided to shake off the decision and allow Swifties to trade away at the concert.

What to know about public transportation to Levi's Stadium

VTA is adding extra service for Friday and Saturday.

Officials say they're adding 30 percent more staff in anticipation of the crowds of Swifties, that's more than it's ever done for any other event.

Extra trains start running at 4:30 p.m and will continue running late after the concert ends.

BART will also be running extra trains for the concert and tell riders to be at Milpitas BART by 11:45 p.m. for the last train serving all stations.

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour

Taylor Swift has added another night at Levi’s® Stadium to Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour on July 28, 2023!

The U.S. leg of Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour was announced just days after the eleven-time GRAMMY winner broke streaming, physical and vinyl album sales around the world. Taylor’s critically acclaimed album, Midnights, is the fastest selling album of her career. Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour will be supported by Paramore, beabadoobee, Phoebe Bridgers, girl in red, MUNA, HAIM, GAYLE, Gracie Abrams, and OWENN. It will be presented by Capital One and produced by Taylor Swift Touring and promoted by the Messina Touring Group (MTG).

Be aware that the flying of any drones or other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in, over or around Levi’s® Stadium may lead to the confiscation of said UAV and/or subject the pilot to penalty or arrest. We reserve the right to enforce violations to the full extent of the law.

Ticket Policy

• All guests ages 2 and above must have an event ticket to enter the stadium.
• Add your tickets and parking passes into Apple Wallet or Google Wallet to expedite entry at parking and stadium gates.
• There is no re-entry after admittance.
• Guests should have their tickets ready to scan upon approaching the stadium entry gates.
• The ticket barcode must be visible no matter the ticket type.
• The Visa Box Office opens at 2:00 pm and is located at the north end of the stadium at
• Toyota Gate F. Walk-up tickets may also be available at the Visa Box Office.
• Tickets will not be emailed or available to print. Your mobile ticket must be displayed on your phone to get into the event.

All guests must be in possession of a valid event ticket, pass or credential to park in a designated parking lot. Please download prepaid parking passes ahead of time and add them to your mobile wallet for an expedited parking process. Day of parking will be available on a limited basis. Credit card payment only. 

Mobility Services will be onsite at 1:00 pm to provide roving carts from the mobility kiosks in Red Lot 1.

Bicycle Parking

Bicycle parking will be located outside of Dignity Health Gate C pedestrian bridge only and will be managed by The Silicon Valley Bike Coalition starting at 2:00 pm. The creek trail will close at Agnew Avenue at 12:00 pm. All ticketed guests will be permitted the use of the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail beginning at 1:00 pm.

Buses/Oversized Vehicles 

Buses/oversized vehicles must park in Blue RV and contact the Visa Box Office at 408-579-4449 to purchase parking in advance.

Parking Lots in Operation Please note prices below represent event day pricing.  

Automobiles/Motorcycles – Red Lot 1,Red Lot 2, Blue Lot 1, Green Lot 3 – $60 Accessible Parking – Red Lot 1 – $60 Buses/Oversized Vehicles – Blue RV Lot – $130

Bag check services will be located in Red Lot 1 near Hilton Santa Clara. Bag check services will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bags that comply with Levi’s Stadium® Clear Bag Policy will be allowed into the stadium.

Levi’s® Stadium prohibits all bags, backpacks, and other carriers from being brought into the stadium with the following exceptions:

• Clear Backpacks
• Clear Fanny Packs
• Clear Purses
• One gallon clear plastic zip lock type bags
• Small Clutch Bag (the size of an adult hand) (4.5” x 6.5”)

All individuals and their belongings are subject to search. The following information is subject to change without notice. 

Fans with medical bags or items they must carry with them must be inspected and have a wristband or sticker placed on it to show that it has been inspected. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLIER TO AVOID LAST MINUTE GATE PRESSURE.

The following ARE PERMITTED in the stadium during Levi’s® Stadium Events:

• Bags that comply with the Bag Policy (see Bag Policy above)
• Binoculars shorter than 6 inches (case prohibited)
• Diaper bags accompanying a child
• Reusable transparent water bottles (no alcohol, less than 24 ounces)
• Sunscreen (only cream, no aerosol cans) & hand-powered misters
• Protective face coverings

The following ARE NOT PERMITTED in the stadium:

• No aerosol cans or containers, including sunscreen, pepper spray, bug spray or spray paint cans
• No alcoholic beverages
• No bags that violate the Clear Bag Policy (see Bag Policy above)
• No external battery packs with the exception of phone charging units
• No bicycles, scooters, skateboards, skates, segways or other unauthorized means of transportation
• No professional or commercial cameras/photography equipment, including any cameras with extendable or detachable lenses, video cameras, GoPros, audio recording devices, or tripods; No video or audio recording will be allowed (except personal cell phones
• No cans, glass bottles, metal containers or alcoholic beverage
• No chains, chain wallets, studded jewelry or spurs
• No confetti
• No clothing, costumes, or personal effects that may impede the view of those around or behind you
• No drugs & drug paraphernalia, marijuana & marijuana products
• No coolers (including soft-sided coolers), thermoses, metal water bottles or ice chests
• No flammables or missile like objects, fireworks, road flares, emergency flares, explosives or other incendiary devices
• No glow sticks, light-up costumes, light-up signs
• No handcuffs or other restraint items
• No hoods, masks, or face coverings that hide one’s identity or objects to cover one’s face (medical & religious articles are permitted)
• No illegal substances
• No intoxication or signs of impairment related to alcohol or drugs
• No irresponsible drinking or behavior
• No klaxons, bullhorns, air horns, bells, thunder sticks, radio bells, musical instruments, whistles, or any other noisemakers
• No laptops and laptop Bags, tablets, iPads or digital reader
• No laser pointers of any type
• No lights or battery packs with the exception of phone charging units
• No offensive clothing
• No projectiles (footballs, Frisbees, balloons, etc.)
• No unauthorized promotional, political or commercial materials, including flyers, samples, giveaways, etc.
• No two-way radios or walkie talkies
• No selfie sticks
• No signs or banners larger than 11” x 17”, sticks, bats, clubs or poles
• No drones and UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles)
• No umbrellas (no obstruction of other fans view)
• No weapons of any kind (including, but not limited to silverware guns, ammo, knives, tasers, pepper spray/mace,etc.). This applies to all attendees, including off-duty law enforcement and concealed carry permit holders.

Anyone possessing PROHIBITED items will be asked to return them to their cars or dispose of them in the garbage cans provided at the gate.

Valley Transportation Authority (VTA)

VTA will operate increased train service from Mountain View station (Caltrain transfer) and Milpitas station (BART transfer) two hours prior to event start. Post-event service will run for approximately 60 minutes post-event. For more information, please visit  www.vta.org .

Guests heading to the concert can get off at the Mountain View station and transfer to VTA light rail service to Levi’s Stadium.

Post-Concert Northbound – Service Mountain View to San Francisco:

• Northbound 145 – 11:33 PM
• Swifty Special will depart Mountain View 75 minutes after the end of the show
• Southbound 138 – 10:48 PM
• Southbound 140 – 11:18 PM
• Southbound 142 – 11:44 PM
• Southbound 144 – 12:15 AM
• Southbound 146 – 1:18 AM

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART)

BART will operate regular weekday and weekend schedules.

Guest heading to the concert can get off at the Milpitas Station and transfer to VTA light rail service to the Levi’s Stadium. Post-concert, BART will run two special event service limited-stop trains that will depart Milpitas Station at around 12:30am serving limited stops after regular BART service ends. The special service will stop only at the following stations:

• Pleasant Hill
• El Cerrito del Norte

Capitol Corridor

Capitol Corridor will operate regular weekday and weekend schedules westbound to Santa Clara. Post concert, Train 550 on Friday will depart GAC at 11:59 PM, and Saturday Train 750 will depart GAC at 11:59 PM. For more information, please visit www.capitolcorridor.org .

The rideshare drop-off location at Levi’s® Stadium for this event will be on Great America Parkway curbside, between Tasman Drive and Old Glory Lane. The pick-up zone is located in Red Lot 7. Follow signage and staff instructions for additional directions.

Parent drop off will be located on Great America Parkway by Tasman Drive and Old Glory Lane. Pickup will begin at 10 pm on Patrick Henry Drive. Please refer to the map and directions below.

All accessible parking will be directed to Green Lot 1. Guests who possess a valid placard will be directed to park and must display their placard at the entrance to be admitted.

Levi’s® Stadium takes pride in providing elite service to all guests including those requiring mobility assistance. We provide a variety of services for our guests with special needs. Included in these services are courtesy shuttle buses from selected parking lots, golf cart shuttles in the Main lot, and Guest Services representatives to provide wheelchair service if requested. Early merchandise sales will begin on Thursday, July 27th from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM in Red Lot 1. Parking lots will open for this event at 8:00 AM in Red Lot 1.

Show day merchandise sales will be available at 2:00PM and will remain open until the end of the show. Merchandise will be located in Red Lot 1 as well as inside the stadium for fans with tickets. Parking will not be available in Red Lot 1 for fans without a ticket. Fans will not be permitted to line up earlier than 2:00PM. Restrooms and water for purchase will be available near the merchandise areas.
