Dodger Stadium Tours - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Ultimate Guide to Planning Your Trip to Dodger Stadium

Photo Credit: Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

Ready to catch a game at the iconic Dodger Stadium in Downtown Los Angeles? Whether you’re a seasoned fan or a first-timer, navigating to the ballpark can be a bit frustrating at times. But don’t sweat it! We’ve got the ultimate guide to help you dodge traffic, find the best parking spots, and even sneak in some snacks.

From the do’s and don’ts of what to bring, to insider tips on entrances and exits, we’ve got you covered. So, lace up those sneakers, grab your cap, and let’s dive into everything you need to know for a smooth Dodger Stadium experience!

Your Ultimate Guide to Planning A Trip to Dodger Stadium

The most important thing you probably need to know is how to actually get to Dodger Stadium at 1000 Vin Scully Ave. Yes, you can punch the location into your maps on your phone, and it will get you there, but it can be a little imperfect as there are multiple entrances all around the ballpark. An important tip to keep in mind is that Gate A is by far the worst way to enter the stadium.

If you have the choice on your map application (example: Google Maps lets you choose which gate you want to navigate to), select a gate closest to where your seats are for the game you are attending or choose the gate that’s closest to where you’re driving from.

Here’s a high level look at the best ways to enter the ballpark from the greater Los Angeles area.

From the West: Gate C (off Academy Road) and Gate B (off Scott Ave.) are your best options. From the North: Gate D (off Academy Road) and Gate C (off Academy Road) are your best options. Gate E (off the 110 freeway) is also an option but traffic exiting from this gate can be troublesome. From the North East (specifically off the 110 freeway): Gate D off the Academy Rd exit is far and away the best entrance to get in and out of Dodger Stadium easily. You will have to navigate through a small neighborhood for a few blocks before merging onto the expanded Academy Rd and turning left onto Academy Gate D. You can also continue past Gate D and navigate around to Gate C if you’re on the Left Field side of the stadium. From the South East (specifically off the 110 freeway): Gate E is the closest to the freeway.  From the South: If you can avoid Gate A off Sunset Blvd, it’s your best bet. Passing Vin Scully Ave and turning onto Echo Park Ave will let you reach Scott Ave and the Gate B entrance. If all else fails or law enforcement has blocked off any roads, your only option may be Gate A.

Check out our comprehensive Parking Guide for more tips, tricks, and things you need to know about navigating to and around Dodger Stadium!

WATCH OUR FAMOUS PARKING GUIDE VIDEO!

Where Are The Cheapest Places to Park Around Dodger Stadium?

The Dodgers have Lot 13 and Lot 14 just outside the ballpark on Stadium Way. Parking is $5 on game days and requires an uphill walk into the stadium grounds through Gate A and Vin Scully Avenue. Free parking is also available (although not always) on N Boylston St and Lilac Terrace off Stadium Way. More information can also be found in this video and in our Parking Tips and Tricks Guide !

Public Transportation to Dodger Stadium

LA Metro also offers free bus rides to Dodger Stadium via the Dodger Stadium Express from Union Station and Harbor Gateway Transit Center. The bus from Union Stadium begins 90 minutes before game time and runs about every 10 minutes.

The return service lines up behind the center field plaza and at the Top Deck and runs for 45 minutes after the final out or 20 minutes after postgame events.

Can You Tailgate at Dodger Stadium?

The short answer is no. The consumption of alcohol in the parking lot is strictly prohibited. One option would be to stop off at any one of the great local bars and restaurants in the area. For more information, check out our Guide for our Favorite Local Bars !

Can You Bring Outside Food and Water into Dodger Stadium?

Yes you can. But, all food and water must be stored in a clear bag not exceeding 12” x 12” x 6”. Water bottles (plastic only) must have their factory seal untampered with.

Can I Bring My Purse or Backpack into Dodger Stadium?

No. Purses, bags, and backpacks are no longer permitted. Only clear plastic bags (not exceeding 12” x 12” x 6”) are allowed. Also, diaper bags and small clutches no bigger than 5” x 8” x 2” are allowed. All bags are subject to search.

Are There Any Prohibited Items I Shouldn’t Bring to Dodger Stadium?

Guns, knives, weapons, illegal drugs and other materials deemed hazardous or dangerous by Dodger personnel are prohibited. Dodger Stadium is also a smoke free environment and vape devices are prohibited.

Payments Accepted at Dodger Stadium

Dodger Stadium is a fully cashless facility. As of the 2023 season, there are five Cash-to-Card kiosks available on the stadium concourses. The kiosks convert cash to prepaid debit cards which can be used anywhere inside and outside of Dodger Stadium. Note: Kiosks only accept US currency. Up to $500 can be loaded on a card.

ADA and Handicapped / Disabled Access

Handicapped / disabled parking is available in Lots B, D, F, G, K, L, N, and P. Disabled fans will valid state-issued disabled parking permit or license plate to parking attendants for access to appropriate spaces. The Dodgers offer a limited ADA shuttle service.

After parking, call the Dodger Hotline at 323-224-2611 to hail a shuttle. Don’t forget which lot you’re in!

Can I Take a Tour of Dodger Stadium?

Dodger Stadium does offer tours all year round. One way to get yourself the most familiar for a trip to and day at Dodger Stadium is to tour the third oldest ballpark in baseball! These 90 minute tours start at 10 AM local time with the last tour of the day beginning at 1 PM on game days and 3 PM on non game days.

On the tours, you may see the trophy gallery including the World Series trophies, game memorabilia, the Vin Scully Press Box and much more. Plus you will be able to spend time on the infield dirt and in the dugout, which is a great photo opportunity.

And there are the most important things you need to know to plan your trip to the ballgame. Dodger Stadium is one of the most venerable and iconic cathedrals in all of sports and is the home to a great night out with your family and friends. With these tips, hopefully you can start your game day out on the right foot. Go Dodgers!

He’s Turning Dodger Stadium into a World-Class Garden, One Native Plant at a Time

Dodger Stadium is the only stadium in the country with an officially accredited botanic garden. Here’s how (and why) landscape manager Chaz Perea made it happen.

Chaz Perea in field of succulents at Dodgers stadium garden

Thomas J. Story

Grass isn’t the only thing growing at Dodger Stadium thanks to landscape manager Chaz Perea. After an epiphany on a trip to the gardens at Versailles, Perea was inspired to transform the stadium into a fully certified botanic garden.

It took five years for Perea and his crew to wholly reimagine and replant the hillsides and concrete planters, and meet the requirements for official accreditation from Botanic Gardens Conservation International . But today, the former hodgepodge of geraniums and petunias, ivy and lantana is now home to dozens of California natives, dotted with succulents, complete with a “tequila garden” brimming with spiky agaves .

succulent in Dodgers stadium garden

With multiple horticulture degrees, an MBA, a Ph.D. in the works, and a full-time professorship at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California, Perea is as much educator as landscape professional and Dodger Stadium is by far his biggest classroom yet. To see his horticultural handiwork up close, book a tour .

Dodger Stadium is the only stadium in the country with an officially accredited botanic garden. How did a native plant garden of such scale become a thing?

It actually almost didn’t happen because native plants were not widely available. You do what the people ask for and the commercial landscaping market isn’t suited to push California native plants . To me, the nonprofit Theodore Payne Foundation and nursery in L.A. is the main mechanism. Thanks to their plants and classes, California native plants are coming to light. My crew took all their classes and will continue to. There needs to be structural changes in the industry for native plants to go more mainstream and now we’re tapped into that and can help.

purple flowers in field at Dodgers stadium

You’ve ripped out asphalt, replaced hedges, and rebuilt the stadium’s signature martini-shaped concrete planters. Talk us through the plantings.

So far we have 150 new species of plants. We’ve got one slope for native California species alone. We’ve got other areas with plants that represent Baja California and the West coast of Mexico; another 50 or so from the Arizona desert region; aloes from Africa, South Africa, Madagascar, and tropical regions. We’re adding 1,000 square feet each year. If you do the math, my guys are putting their hands on more native plants than anyone and are becoming ambassadors for the industry as well.

What learnings can you pass along to home gardeners?

Plant small. The smaller the plant is when you start it, the better it’ll be able to handle the stressors later in the year. You’ll use less power tools and spend more time pruning. There’s something about getting your hands on everything that really connects you to the plants. You’ll get a lot of biodiversity with the plants changing the microbiome in the soil, which attracts insect populations, which attracts birds. We have Asclepias going in for the monarchs . We’re starting to see more native wildlife. Our hummingbird population is ridiculous.

Chaz Perea at Dodgers stadium

How are the fans reacting?

They’re posting about it on social media. But you know how we really know people are starting to notice? They’re stealing our plant signs!

What do you really want the fans to take away after seeing the gardens?

L.A. has its share of problems but it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. I love this city and I’ll be damned if I’m not going to do my part to make it more beautiful. We want fans to come to the game and take more away than just the game. This land is sacred. L.A. is rich in beauty and we’re trying to be a part of it.

Dodger Stadium landscaping crew transforms grounds to a certified botanic garden

Localish logo

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Dodger Stadium, known to fans as Blue Heaven On Earth, has gone green, becoming the only stadium in the country with a officially accredited botanic garden. Leading the effort to obtain the distinction was Dodger Stadium's landscape manager Dr. Chaz Perea, who has a PhD degree and teaches horticulture at Mt. San Antonio College.

"A botanic garden means that you are a living collection of plants. It's a living museum," said Dr. Perea. "It's the most visited stadium in the world, but people are really focused on getting from the auto gate to their seat. But if you're observant on your way in, you'll see all sorts of fun species."

Dr. Perea affectionately calls his landscaping team the Guardians of Ravine in reference to Chavez Ravine, the historical hilly land on which the stadium sits.

"The landscaping has defined Dodger Stadium since it opened in 1962, really celebrating the landscape that defines this part of Southern California," said Janet Marie Smith, Executive Vice President of Planning & Development with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"There is no other ballpark in America that has a public park that wraps it," said Smith. "Chaz and his landscape team have really worked hard to bring that park like setting into the property."

Dodger Stadium Tour – Los Angeles

Visited: April 2022

Although I unwisely became a San Diego Padres fan while in college at San Diego State (please don’t let your children suffer a similar fate), in my younger years I lived and died with every pitch of the Los Angeles Dodgers.   I thrilled to the exploits of Sandy Koufax, Maury Wills, Tommy Davis and countless other of my baseball idols. To relive some of those great memories when I used to root for a winning team, I decided to take a tour of Dodger Stadium with friends Jeff (spouting his Padres allegiance on his shirt) and his brother Robbie.  It’s a ballpark where the three of us have easily spent more than a thousand evenings of our collective lives.

dodger stadium landscape tour

On a hot, sunny Saturday afternoon the three of us decided to revisit some of its history on one of the stadium guided tours.   Before the tour started we checked out a series of numbers worn by some Dodgers Hall of Famers, players who’ve had their numbers retired and a tribute to former Dodgers play-by-play man, the incomparable Vin Scully, immortalized forever on Robbie’s t-shirt.

dodger stadium landscape tour

Of course, you can’t mention the Dodgers without talking about Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier becoming the first African American in major league baseball on April 11, 1947.

dodger stadium landscape tour

One last stop for me before the tour was at #53 Don Drysdale. In 1968 Drysdale set a major league record with six consecutive shutouts.   Coincidentally, on May 31, 1968, I was in attendance at Drysdale’s fifth consecutive shutout, and although we would not meet for two more years at SDSU, Jeff, along with friend and business partner Tim, also were at that game.

dodger stadium landscape tour

In my sports room, I still have a matchbook from Drysdale’s Dug Out restaurant that opened in Van Nuys in 1962 and closed in 1982.

dodger stadium landscape tour

After getting our hand stamped, the three of us awaited our tour guide by looking out from the General Admission area on to Dodger Stadium.   Remember that’s haze in the distance, not smog (at least that’s what we tell the relatives from Seattle).

dodger stadium landscape tour

On the GA wall was a large mural of old Dodger tickets.   I remember when it was hard to muster the $3.50 to afford those Field Box Seats.   Today, that same ticket costs about as much as a gas fill-up.

dodger stadium landscape tour

Our tour guide, John, first took us to the Vin Scully Press Box, where the scribes take in the ball game.

dodger stadium landscape tour

Walking through the press box, there are a number of photos featuring the one and only Tommy Lasorda.

dodger stadium landscape tour

In 1976 Lasorda had an extended visit with Frank Sinatra, who would become a friend.   Sinatra promised Lasorda that if he ever got his dream job of managing the Dodgers, Old Blue Eyes would sing the national anthem.   In a 2020 article in Dodger Insider, Lasorda reminisced about meeting Sinatra, “For me, this was like meeting Babe Ruth or the President of the United States.”   On April 7, 1977, at Dodger Stadium, Sinatra would fulfill that promise on Opening Day and Lasorda’s managerial debut.   This photo on the press box wall was taken at Sinatra’s box seats.

dodger stadium landscape tour

Another photo that caught my eye was of my favorite baseball player of all-time, Sandy Koufax.   This picture of Sandy’s perfect game brought me back to September of 1965, as my dad and I listened to Vin Scully call every dramatic ball and strike.

dodger stadium landscape tour

If you want announcing perfection, just go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WINiz0Bfb-0 .

Speaking of Sandy Koufax, when I was a seven or eight he was signing autographs at a supermarket in South Pasadena.   I begged my mom to take me, but when it was my turn, I was star struck and unable to speak so I ended up with this black and white autographed photo.   Less tongue-tied kids got color photos.

dodger stadium landscape tour

A large ticket of the 1963 World Series brought back great memories of the Dodgers four-game sweep of the hated Yankees (some things never change).

dodger stadium landscape tour

To cap off this part of the tour, John showed us an array of baseball caps the Dodgers (and its other nicknames) have used through the decades.

dodger stadium landscape tour

In order to change its losing the ways, in 1937 the Brooklyn Dodgers experimented with green caps.   The experiment failed. The Dodgers finished 33 1/2 games behind the National League Champion New York Giants.   The next year they changed back to blue, which started the tradition of the Dodgers featuring script letterforms.

dodger stadium landscape tour

I asked our tour guide if they had ever received any of the Dodgers collection that had been displayed at the short-lived Sports Museum of Los Angeles that closed in 2016.  Unfortunately, none of it was here.  Here’s a couple of photos I took when I visited shortly before its closing.  It was a fantastic museum.

dodger stadium landscape tour

Here, Jeff attempts to tell reporters why he became a Padres fan, while I look on in bemusement and amusement.

dodger stadium landscape tour

Lining the halls were posters of two World Series programs, both of which I own in my collection. My favorite anecdote from the ’65 series is when Koufax was unable to pitch in the first game because it fell on Yom Kippur. Don Drysdale took his place and lasted less than three innings, giving up 7 runs.  When manager Walter Alston came out to the mound to take him out, Drysdale reportedly said to his manager, ““Hey Skip, bet you wish I was Jewish today, too.”

Another little anecdote from the ’65 series.  I was 13-years-old and desperately wanted to get out of school to watch Game 7 (they played in the daytime back then).  I told my mom I was sick, and she got out the trusty thermometer.  When she left, I rubbed it on the pillow a few times to make the temperature go up, and sure enough it was more than 100 when she looked at it.  I had tried this trick before, and unfortunately my dad was usually the one to catch me.  When my mom called him in to decide if I was ok to go to school, my dad said (much to my surprise, “I think he should stay home a day to get better.”   I couldn’t believe I had fooled him, too, however when my mom walked out of the room, he turned around to me and gave me a wink.  That special father-son moment always brings back great memories of my dad.  To make it even better, the Dodgers beat the Minnesota Twins, and Sandy pitched a shutout.

dodger stadium landscape tour

To show how much I loved the Dodgers when I was a kid, I still have every Dodger Yearbook between 1958 and 1972 … except 1960.   I bet my sister tossed it out with my old baseball cards.

dodger stadium landscape tour

There were more posters featuring Dodger greats.

dodger stadium landscape tour

I asked if I could go and pump iron in the Dodger weight room, but the tour guide looked at me like I was some kind of dumbbell.

dodger stadium landscape tour

Although we had booked the “Clubhouse Tour,” we were informed the clubhouse was being painted and was off limits to visitors.   The website had said we’d be offered a “glimpse,” and a glimpse was all we got.   We couldn’t even take photos from the perimeter of the clubhouse, so that was kind of a disappointment.   The least they could have perhaps offered us was a Clubhouse sandwich.

dodger stadium landscape tour

The field at Dodger Stadium is in pristine condition, and it was cool to be standing where some of my childhood heroes played.   We were given a warning that we had to stay on the track.

dodger stadium landscape tour

We took one final shot before leaving the field.

dodger stadium landscape tour

With the exception of not really seeing the clubhouse on the Clubhouse Tour, the experience was well worth the money.   The three of us had a blast reminiscing about our times at Dodger Stadium, and since we are pretty big baseball trivia buffs, we took particular pleasure in annoying the tour group by answering most of the trivia questions tossed out by our guide. (I must admit I never knew the Dodgers were once called the Brooklyn Bridegrooms.)

dodger stadium landscape tour

If you root for the Dodgers or are just a baseball fan in general, the tour of Dodger Stadium is a great way to get a closer look at baseball history, especially since 2022 is the 60th anniversary of the ballpark.

As the sun began its descent behind the San Gabriel Mountains last Friday evening, a buzz of electricity filled the air at Dodger Stadium.

To begin with, the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers were returning home for a showdown with the NL-East leading Atlanta Braves.

It wasn't just a battle of baseball's best, but two juggernauts who have been above and beyond the two best teams in baseball over the past five seasons. They met in the playoffs three times over that span and in back-to-back National League Championship Series in 2020 and 2021.

The winner of each of those series went on to win the World Series.

So naturally, with all eyes on Chavez Ravine for the weekend, the Topps Tour Truck had to get in on the action as well.

The Topps Tour Truck is in the midst of a nationwide tour during the 162-game MLB season. Its goal is to stop at all 30 MLB ballparks along the way. None better, than the one high atop the mountains looking down on Downtown Los Angeles. The one surrounded by the Hollywood sign, palm trees, sunshine, and cotton candy sunsets. The third oldest stadium in baseball, and the one nicknamed "Blue Heaven on Earth."

Get today's sports news out of Los Angeles. Here's the latest on the Dodgers, Lakers, Angels, Kings, Galaxy, LAFC, USC, UCLA and more LA teams.

So on Friday, May 3, the Topps Truck rolled into town, ready to dazzle Dodger fans with a spectacle of baseball nostalgia and modern excitement.

Promised an evening of fun, games, baseball cards, and of course, Dodger baseball, fans and collectors alike flocked to the newly remodeled Center Field Plaza, drawn in by the allure of the newest Topps Series 1 trading cards and an opportunity to take home some exclusive giveaways.

Andrew Curtis, one of the Topperators steering the Topps Truck Tour across the nation, shared his enthusiasm for the tour's grand revival with NBC LA on that day.

"This year for the Topps Truck Tour, we’re going to be hitting all 30 MLB stadiums," he exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with anticipation. "We’ll have corn hole set-up, a big photo frame for fans to pretend they’re on a Topps baseball card, and of course, thousands of free Topps baseball cards for everyone!"

Dodger Stadium provided the perfect backdrop for the evening's celebrations. Nestled in between a Dodger blue fire truck serving cold beverages on tap, and a vintage airstream RV filled to the brim with apparel, Curtis couldn't contain his excitement about being back at the Ravine.

"Chavez Ravine is such a great venue in general," he remarked with a smile. "Our first visit to Dodger Stadium last year was fantastic, and I'm thrilled to be back here under the famous Blue Heaven sign. Plus, the Southern California weather always adds to the magic!"

As the evening unfolded, Dodger fans were treated to more than just baseball cards. Curtis and his team were on hand to distribute free sample packs of Topps newest collection as well as other prizes like rally towels, bags, and more.

"We always look forward to having fans stop by the Topps Truck before the game," said Curtis sparking with joy and nostalgia. "It's about sharing the love of the game and creating memorable experiences for everyone."

Reflecting on the highlights of the tour so far, Curtis couldn't help but recall the excitement of past events. "Petco Park was a big hit," he recalled. "And Spring Training in Florida was a blast this year!"

But amidst the whirlwind of tour stops and fan interactions, Curtis cherished the personal stories that made each event special.

"One year at the Little League World Series, we had a grandfather and grandson visit the Topps Truck," Curtis shared, his eyes gleaming with fondness. "The grandson had the entire Topps 1953 set in a binder. It was a piece of family history, and they were so excited to share it with us and other fans. They left a couple of duplicates on our 'Take One, Leave One' wall, spreading the joy of collecting to others."

As the Dodgers took the field, the Topps Truck Tour continued to weave its magic, bringing smiles, memories, and the timeless joy of baseball to all who gathered under the stars at Dodger Stadium.

The game didn't disappoint as well. The Dodgers defeated the Braves 4-3 in an extra-innings marathon that saw rookie Andy Pages record his first career walk-off RBI during his first-career four-hit game. As his teammates poured onto the field to celebrate the fireworks began to erupt in the night sky. Overall it was a perfect evening for Dodger baseball.

A frank look at hot dog prices at MLB ballparks

Several teams offer hot dogs of varying sizes for different prices. But here are the cheapest ones, regardless of size.

dodger stadium landscape tour

Actor Humphrey Bogart once remarked that a hot dog at the game beats roast beef at the Ritz. Most baseball fans would agree with the sentiment, though Bogart might be surprised by how much the average ballpark frank would set him back these days.

According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, roughly 20 million hot dogs are consumed at MLB stadiums every season, which averages out to roughly 8,000 hot dogs per game. (The NHDSC also claims the average American eats a whopping 70 hot dogs per year, and if that seems like an insane number, well, you’re not alone .)

It’s difficult to fairly compare hot dog prices across MLB ballparks; several teams offer plain hot dogs of varying sizes for different prices, while other teams offer a single-size hot dog for one price, all in addition to specialty stadium-specific dogs topped with a variety of unconventional garnishes, such as mini pierogies , crab mac and cheese and Froot Loops .

Last year, USA Today gathered hot dog prices from 28 of MLB’s 30 teams . Building on that important research, and inspired by readers’ reactions to the price of concessions at Nationals Park after the team’s annual ballpark tour for media members ahead of Opening Day, I sought to compile a list of the cheapest hot dogs available at every ballpark, regardless of size. The following summary is based on hot dog prices obtained from hospitality vendors, teams and, in a few cases, the MLB Ballpark app.

Excluding promotional deals, such as dollar dog night, the Toronto Blue Jays boast MLB’s cheapest hot dog at $2.55 (or $3.49 Canadian). It’s available, along with similarly priced value items, at two concession stands at Rogers Centre. The Arizona Diamondbacks have the cheapest hot dog on this side of the border, a $2.99 offering at nine concession stands throughout Chase Field.

The Miami Marlins feature a $3 hot dog as part of their value menu at LoanDepot Park, and the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins sell hot dogs for $3.99 at Truist Park and Target Field. The Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners offer $4 hot dogs at select concession stands, and Oriole Park at Camden Yards has a 410 menu — a nod to Baltimore’s area code — featuring hot dogs and other items for $4.10.

In all cases, these hot dogs are smaller than more expensive hot dogs offered at other concession stands within the ballpark. For instance, the Blue Jays and Twins sell more standard size hot dogs for $4.95 ($6.79 Canadian) and $7.49, and the Braves offer a jumbo all-beef dog for $9.49. It’s good to have options.

The average lowest price for a hot dog across MLB’s 30 ballparks this season is $5.99. The Chicago White Sox ($5.49), Boston Red Sox ($6.25), New York Yankees ($6.29) and Detroit Tigers ($6.49) are among the teams whose cheapest hot dogs are priced closest to the average.

The most expensive hot dog in the majors is the $8.39 Colossal Dog at Oakland Coliseum, where the Las Vegas-bound A’s are averaging about 6,000 fans . (Insert joke about A’s owner John Fisher needing to offset the cost of the league’s lowest payroll here.)

According to Aramark, the hospitality vendor for the A’s and eight other MLB teams, the Colossal Dog is a quarter-pound offering from Lodi, Calif.-based Miller’s. Hot dog size information was not available for most teams, but the A’s might be the only club selling a quarter-pounder as its basic hot dog.

The average hot dogs found in a grocery store are two ounces, while the hot dogs featured on ballpark value menus are typically closer to 1.5 ounces. (As the food critic for the Seattle Times noted two years ago , the aforementioned $4 hot dog available at Mariners games “could stand to improve its meat-to-bun ratio,” and while it’s an excellent option for families with kids, the heftier $8 Mariner dog rates much better.)

MLB’s second-most-expensive basic hot dog is the $8 Angel Dog at Anaheim’s Angel Stadium, followed closely by the $7.99 hot dogs at Wrigley Field, Nationals Park, Dodger Stadium and Petco Park. Wrigley Field, Nationals Park and Dodger Stadium are serviced by Levy Restaurants, while Petco Park partners with Delaware North.

“In most cases, we work very closely with our clients to determine pricing,” said Shawn Mattox, a vice president of operations for Delaware North, which handles concessions for 10 MLB teams. “We use our revenue management team along with our [business intelligence] team to help run analytics on how things sold in comparison to other items and whether they’re up or down from previous years. We keep in mind sensitivity to pricing and look at cost increases and things of that nature.”

In 2022, an official from one hospitality vendor told ESPN that hot dog costs increased between 20 percent and 30 percent, which was the highest annual increase in 30 years. Here in D.C., the price of a hot dog at Nationals Park increased by 50 cents, or 6 percent, from last season, and similar price increases were instituted throughout the majors. The Nationals declined to make a ballpark operations official available for an interview about concession pricing, and Levy Restaurants did not respond to a request for comment.

The Nationals are one of several teams that offer discounts on tickets and concessions on select days throughout the season. Hot dogs are available for $4 — and pizza, pretzels and fountain sodas are also heavily discounted — during every Tuesday home game . The Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers, who are serviced by Delaware North, offer similar hot dog discounts on Tuesdays, while the Colorado Rockies have a concession stand featuring smaller and cheaper items for kids, including a hot dog for $3.15.

“We know that fans of baseball reach across a lot of genres and families make up a good portion of that,” Mattox said. “I think we’re all sensitive to the fact that we want to make sure it’s affordable.”

The Houston Astros, Texas Rangers , Blue Jays and Royals are among the handful of teams with regular dollar dog nights throughout the season. The Phillies discontinued their dollar dog promotion this year after a food fight erupted at a game last season, but Citizens Bank Park, which is serviced by Aramark, still features one of the cheaper hot dogs ($4.99) in the majors. Meanwhile, the A’s are offering $2 tickets and $1 hot dogs — presumably not the quarter-pound variety — at three Wednesday home games this season. The New York Mets sold a Citi Field record 44,269 hot dogs during their dollar dog promotion Tuesday, which was 30,000 fewer hot dogs than the Blue Jays sold on a record-breaking “Loonie Dog” night last season.

For fans who might balk at the idea of paying $6 or more for a hot dog, most teams, including the Nationals, allow you to bring outside food into the ballpark, with certain restrictions. Short of making a stop at Costco en route to the game, one option for Nationals fans looking to get their hot dog fix without breaking the bank is to grab a couple of grilled hot dogs at the Bullpen on Half Street for the same price as a single hot dog inside the stadium.

Of course, expensive concessions at sporting events, where teams have a captive audience, are nothing new, nor are annual price increases. Back in 1978, one fan decided to do something about it. That year, the concessions provider for San Francisco’s Candlestick Park increased the price of hot dogs by a nickel, claiming it needed to cover the cost of new equipment and additional workers after state and local health officials began requiring hot dogs sold by vendors to be pre-wrapped.

Ron Gordon, a 32-year-old high school biology teacher from nearby Redwood City, scrutinized the economics of the price hike and took his findings to the media, garnering coverage from the Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated and CBS. He wrote to the Giants, the President’s Council on Wage and Price Stability and President Jimmy Carter himself, and he even created charts and wrapped hot dogs in front of the San Francisco Park and Recreation Board to show the Giants’ concession provider had woefully underestimated the number of dogs its workers could wrap in a minute.

After a year-long effort that cost an estimated $1,500 out of his own pocket, Gordon persuaded the board to roll back the price of hot dogs to 75 cents.

“I’m a Dodgers fan,” Gordon told reporters, “and I only come out to Candlestick a couple or three times a year. But I figure that the money I spent was an investment in justice. The only thing that bothers me is not that I know more about this than anyone else — but that I know more about it than I know about anything else.”
