"I love hearing about the history of NY and the theatre. NY has such energy! It was the first time I looked at how beautiful the building facades are...they are works of art like the NY Library and the Met Museum. Next tour will be in the summer." -Madeline Cassano
Our group was small and very intimate. Just 4 of us. The guide was informed and very personable. My friends and I are avid theater goers and this was right up our alley.
"We had some time before our Broadway show, and we decided to try the New York Broadway Tour - and it was awesome! More fun, personal, and inspiring than a typical tour. My daughter is an aspiring performer and loved learning lots of "insider" details about the theatres and performers. We had such a great time and also a lot of laughs. We recommend this tour without hesitation. My daughter came home energized about her performing arts aspirations." - Dan Dulleba (TripAdvisor)
Amada is great! She's full of so much Broadway information and talented toooo!!! Thanks Amada for a grand time!!!!
"Thanks again for a very interesting tour! We can't wait to be back in New York city and see another Broadway show!" - Joannie Tardif
"I searched around for a Broadway tour because I basically came to NYC for the theater and I figured it would be a good investment! Amada, the tour guide, is wonderful and so sweet. She has the same enthusiasm as I do about theatre! In saying that, I did find that I knew a lot about what she was teaching us about already. For the average NYC tourist, this would be a perfect tour about the basics of NYC theatre!! The tour is a good length, though it did go about 20 minutes longer than expected, and Amada takes you on a route that somehow avoids most of the hectic crowds so kudos to her! Do keep in mind that you do not go into any theaters, but you do get to see plenty of them. Go support this new business and the wonderful Amada!" - Maddie O
"My mom and I had a great time!" - Shannon Hearns
"Amada Anderson was a fab tour guide and really went out of her way to show me the sites and tell me stories about Broadway there is somebody who loves her job. Amada really did inspire me. well worth the money and I would pay more for this tour." - Carlotta Rose
"Amada is an excellent tour guide. It's obvious that she has a passion for musical theatre and is knowledgeable about the topic as well! It was great to visit the theaters and learn the history of them along with listening to Amada sing popular Broadway songs. I definitely would recommend this tour to both seasoned Broadway viewers and newbies!" - TripAdvisor Reviewer
"Awesome tour guide, great tour!" - Janae Catt
"The tour guide is SO knowledgeable about Broadway Musicals that the tour was a sheer delight! She has a background in Musical Theatre and her knowledge is deep! The best tour I have ever done. "We just took Amada's Broadway Tour. We thought it was wonderful. We did some singing, dancing, and jazz hands!" - Sarah Cimperman
"I loved it! Amada is doing a great job and she's got a really great voice and she knows a lot about Broadway history. I really recommend it. Two thumbs up. It was fun!" - Bruno Lamarre
"We just got done taking the tour with Amada like Hakuna Matata and we had an awesome time. You get to hear Amada sing all the awesome Broadway songs and she's got a great voice. You get to interact with other people in the street, she get's everyone involved and it's awesome." - Lisa Arndt
"A friend and I took the tour on a Sunday. Amada was on time, really knows what she is talking about, provided a weatlh of information that we didn't know (and we live here!). Interestingly enough, there were only the 2 of us so we really got to ask about everything we wanted to know! There were supposed to be others on the tour and she did wait some minutes and call/text them rather than just take off without them. I think this shows her professionalism and wanting to make sure that people weren't left behind. She made the tour fun, despite the oppressive heat, and encourages people to have 'jazz hands', sing along, etc. Not to mention that she has a great voice! I recommend taking the tour- don't think you'll be disappointed!" - Sonia

Review Roundup: GHOST THE MUSICAL Opens on Broadway - All the Reviews!

pixeltracker

Ghost the Musical, adapted from the Academy Award winning film, opened tonight, April 23, 2012 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.  Richard Fleeshman and Caissie Levy reprise their starring roles as Sam and Molly, which they originated in London’s hit West End production. They are joined by newcomer Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Oda Mae Brown and Bryce Pinkham as Carl Bruner.

This new musical is directed by Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus and choreographed by Ashley Wallen. Ghost The Musical features a brand-new original score by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard, with a book by Bruce Joel Rubin, who has adapted his Academy Award winning original screenplay for the stage.

Let's see what the critics had to say...

Charles Isherwood, The New York Times : “Ghost,” with a book and lyrics by Bruce Joel Rubin, who (unbelievably) won an Oscar for the movie’s screenplay; and music and lyrics by Dave Stewart (of the fab 1980s synth-pop duo the Eurythmics — say it ain’t so!) and Glen Ballard, may not be the very worst musical ever made from a movie. I might give that palm to either “Dirty Dancing” or “Fame,” neither of which has yet made it to Broadway. (Thank the theater gods for small blessings.) But it is just as flavorless and lacking in dramatic vitality as many that have come before.

Mark Kennedy, The Associated Press : Sam’s final, drawn-out goodbye ignited clapping for its visual beauty — going to heaven looks really, really cool even if the dialogue (”See ya” and “Bye”) is somewhat lacking. But there are some clear missteps, notably the character of the hospital ghost who greets the dead Sam right after his murder. The ghost, which has been reworked since London, still isn’t right, an odd combination of vaudeville and soul that doesn’t fit this shocking moment. Overall, it’s an ambitious, carefully orchestrated work that raises the bar on technological innovation. In London, “Ghost The Musical” has become a hit. How will a Broadway audience likely respond? Ditto.

Suzy Evans, Backstage : Though a technical glitch caused an unplanned 25-minute break at the performance I attended, I’m not going to get caught up in the details. The incident only illustrates exactly what is wrong with “Ghost”: It’s trying to be something it’s not. Warchus has turned a touching silver-screen love story into an overly flashy showbiz musical that betrays the intimacy of its source.

David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter : Full confession: The 1990 movie Ghost is on my top 10 list of that decade’s more shameless pleasures. Demi Moore with the Pierrot haircut and artfully applied teardrops; poor Patrick Swayze with his single expression of intense concentration; Whoopi Goldberg at her ghetto-fabulous funniest. What’s not to love? Turns out plenty in this leaden stage musicalization of the supernatural romantic thriller, a flavorless hash that is unrelentingly loud, vulgar and stunningly tone-deaf to the ways in which the world has changed since that era of sweet young yuppie innocence.

Steven Suskin, Variety : Full of moving scenery, lights, projections, film and magical illusions, but devoid of actual magic, the Broadway production of "Ghost" is a lumbering megatuner with little to offer beyond a limitless array of dazzling effects. But while it's tempting to suggest the show hasn't a ghost of a chance, that assessment might not be warranted: The still-running London production successfully parried a dire critical reception last July, and audience response to the visuals and that familiar title might well attract enough Rialto customers to make a go of it.

Matt Windman, AM New York : The pottery wheel has been carried over. Same goes for the hit song "Unchained Melody," which is sung countless times. But that hardly helps "Ghost the Musical," a faithful but unmoving and overblown adaptation of the 1990 Patrick Swayze-Demi Moore romantic fantasy that has become an iconic chick flick.

Jonathan Mandell, The Faster Times : Ghost the Musical is a literally spectacular stage show. It makes better use of video projections than any previous show on Broadway...No other current Broadway show – and, I would wager, no Broadway show ever – has had an illusionist as part of the design team...Director Matthew Warchus, whose previous directorial efforts on Broadway have tilted toward sophisticated comedies, the Broadway equivalent of art house movies — Art, God of Carnage, The Norman Conquest – is here trying something new. I’m not sure he is presiding over the Broadway equivalent of a date movie; it seems closer to the Broadway equivalent of a theme park ride. That’s not a put-down. The best rides are exhilarating.

Linda Winer, Newsday : The ads for "Ghost: The Musical" proclaim "You've never felt anything like this . . . You've never seen anything like this." The point, well taken, is that this song-and-dance adaptation of the hit 1990 movie attempts to push Broadway technology beyond mere cinematic rip-off to something akin to music videos at the IMAX. Never mind, presumably, that the songs, the story and the acting are paint-by-numbers primers that add nothing to the movie that starred Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze, Whoopi Goldberg and a pottery wheel spinning to the unhinged innuendo of "Unchained Melody." The main event here is the feeling/seeing of all the neat nonstop special effects (except when a mysterious technical glitch caused a dead stop for almost a half-hour at a recent preview).

Elysa Gardner, USA Today : If you haven't seen Ghost on screen, there's a bittersweet ending. For the musical's producers, the future looks brighter: A third production is set to open in Melbourne next year. Apparently, sentimentality and special effects are draws — even if the latter can play tricks on you occasionally.

Thom Geier, Entertainment Weekly : The chief draws of Warchus' production are the high-tech set (by designer Rob Howell), the cinematic video projections (designed by Jon Driscoll), the striking lighting (designed by Hugh Vanstone), and illusionist Paul Kieve's onstage magic effects that let Sam move objects and walk through walls. Like Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark, the musical version of Ghost haunts the eye, not the ear.

Jeremy Gerard, Bloomberg : If the comic-book ideal appeals to you as much as it apparently did to director Matthew Warchus -- and if you haven’t been to the movies in, say, a couple of decades -- “Ghost: The Musical” has plenty to offer. Palpitating with light-emitting diodes that blink, flicker, zip and flash, “Ghost” is like “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” without the depth.

Chris Jones, The Chicago Tribune : Our fervent if fantastical wish that our lives, and the lives of those we love, don't end with death has informed musicals since the form was invented. It is the heartbeat of "Carousel," one of the greatest musicals of all. So that moment in "Ghost" — not so different, really, from the instant Julie Jordan senses Billy Bigelow standing before her — should put a lump in your throat. And for a second, it does (it's why the movie made plenty of people cry). But in this instance, it's quickly replaced by resentment that a show has co-opted and manipulated such an exquisitely raw and potent device, a vulnerable place for any audience where no show should casually tread, and used it so carelessly, tossing away the human vulnerability for a slew of harsh, digitized illusions.

Vulture (NY Mag) : I call Stewart (a former Eurythmic) and veteran popsmith Ballard “composers,” but “producers” is closer to the spirit of the thing: This is really not music but production, which is keeping with Ghost’s gestalt: It’s the most impressively overproduced entity on Broadway, and there’s no small thrill in witnessing the technical prowess on display, even when it batters your retinas like timpani on Orff night, drowning out everything else.

Howard Shapiro, Philadelphia Inquirer :  Luckily, the show recovers, delivered by four talented leads who include Philadelphian Da’Vine Joy Randolph in the part of the con-artist spiritualist. Randolph, a Temple University grad who received her bachelor’s degree in classical vocal performance and went on to a drama master’s from Yale, is giving the juicy role a great ride, belting it out when called for, playing it for all the extremes it’s worth and generally sizzling.

Broadway Ghost – The 5 Most Terrifyingly Haunted Theaters

blog

Broadway is a staple of midtown New York and has been for over a century. Plenty of people involved with the Theatre District have passed on but not all of them have left…

Every night people come out to see Broadway shows by the thousands. Eventually, curtains come down, the actors take their final bows and the shows come to an end. Everyone goes back out into the night and the theaters go dark. The only light that remains is a singular bulb artists call a Ghost Light. Theaters all over the world use this light both as a safety measure and a means to appease any spirits that may inhabit their space. Broadway is no different and if you attend a show, you may be sitting with a Broadway Ghost.

So here are five, still active theaters on the Great White Way that many believe are home to some Paranormal Patrons.

1564 7th Ave & W 47th Street, New York, NY 10036

Built in 1903 the Palace is one of the oldest still running theaters on Broadway. It has it’s fair share of plays, musicals and tragedy.

Legend has it that in the 1950’s, acrobat Louis Borsalino would attempt a tight rope walk without a net and fall to his death. While some dispute this claim, saying that the high-flyer was only badly injured during the fall, stagehands and actors alike believe his ghost still has a taste for the stage. Therefore, Borsalino can be seen swinging from the rafters when the theater is empty. Like any good Broadway Ghost, he will let out a shriek of terror before reenacting his ill fated final act. Over and over and over again.

The New Amsterdam

214 W 42nd St, New York, NY 10036

Right in the heart of Times Square, the New Amsterdam is over a century old! Disney revived it in the mid nineties and it is now home to some of the most extravagant productions around and a Broadway Ghost.

First of all, Olive Thomas was a Broadway chorus girl in the early 1900’s, known for her beauty. As a result, she caught the eye of many, like her husband, Jack Pickford. The two did not have the greatest relationship and in 1920 they decided a trip to Paris would be the perfect cure. However, a heated exchange between the two lead to Olive’s tragic overdose on mercury bi-chloride, a topical ointment.

Very soon after her death, reports began that Olive was walking the halls of the New Amsterdam Theater. Clad in a green, beaded dress and carrying a bottle much like the one she fatefully drank from in Paris. Sightings of Olive remain steady (even as recently as 2005) since the need to perform cannot escape her. Even in death.

149 W 45th St, New York, NY 10036

Few American Theaters are as old as the Lyceum. Granted landmark status in 1974, it is the oldest, continuously running Theater on Broadway. Hence it should come as no surprise that it also has a permanent phantom in the form of legendary Choreographer Bob Fosse.

Fosse, known for his distinct and innovative style of dance, worked with many actors and dancers over his career. One such actress was Chita Rivera. River starred in 2016’s The Visit, in the Lyceum. During the show, crew members claimed to hear strange sounds in addition to cigarette smoke coming from the balcony. Many of them assume that it was the ghost of Fosse himself. Due to Fosse’s work relationship with Rivera and his apparent love of the Balcony seats, it makes sense that he would choose that show to haunt. Whether or not he stays around is the question. Needless to say, as a Broadway Ghost, he’s got plenty of time to decide.

The Imperial

249 W 45th St, New York, NY 10036

Sometimes you don’t need a storied history to be a ghost. You just have to scare a group of kids.

The Imperial Theatre opened in 1923 and various musicals and plays have graced its stage of the last century. The most noteworthy of those shows was Billy Elliot. A musical based on the hit film, its big draw was music by Elton John and a talented group of Tony award winning youngsters. Young girls in the show claimed that their dressing room was haunted by a strange and powerful entity who would open and close doors at will and the name of that Broadway Ghost: Fred.

Therefore, while some believe that famed actress Ethel Merman probably haunts the old theater, the cast of Billy Elliot will tell you a much different story.

The Belasco

111 W 44th St, New York, NY 10036

Finally, the most noteworthy theatre on this list. David Belasco commissioned it to be built in 1907. While it is only the sixth oldest theater on Broadway, it most likely takes the lead as far as sightings are concerned.

David Belasco died in 1931 and consequently became one of the Broadway Ghosts. He is said to watch rehearsals and walk the halls whenever he pleases. Some crew in the theatre will say, “Goodnight, Mr. Belasco.” at the end of the night, just to appease him. Even I have had a spooky experience with this legendary Broadway Ghost.

As a bar manager at the time, I had to stay late to count the night’s profits. Suddenly, in my non ventilated office, the air grew cold. Just as quickly as the cold began, it was gone, returning the room to its normal temperature. Even I have my skepticism towards ghosts and this incident shook me to my core. Many believe that Cold Spots will often accompany ghosts and knowledge of this phenomenon gave me cause to leave the theatre early that night.

Those are the Broadway Ghosts that this intrepid blogger knows about and their are many others. Do you have a ghastly experience in a Broadway Theater? Let us know in the comments! If you wanna see some of these theaters first hand, check out Inside Broadway Tours!

6 Spine-Tingling Ghost Tours in New York City

Michele · October 4, 2022 ·

Exterior of KGB Bar at night in New York City.

When you take a ghost tour in New York City , you’ll visit some of the city’s oldest neighborhoods and hear tales of people who met their untimely end in tragic fashions.

According to ghost lore, many of these unlucky individuals insist on sticking around in spirit form. They stay because they’ve got unfinished business, or don’t know where else to go, or simply because they want to remain among the living, reminding us of their presence with unexplained noises, visions, and even smells that send chills up our spines.

The most intriguing thing about NYC ghost tours are these stories about the long-dead and how they continue to make their presence known. What took place in a life–or a death–that makes these spirits hang on?

Even better, ghost stories are typically rooted in historical facts, and they’re told by local guides who are knowledgeable about the people and places they’re describing. So even if you’re a non-believer in the supernatural, you’ll still have a great time.

And if you want to visit a haunted house, NYC is the place to do that, too. Go on a ghost hunt at Manhattan’s oldest house or hear about eerie encounters in a home that still contains its original 19th century decor.

Ghost tours are understandably popular in NYC in the fall , the season of Halloween, haunted houses, and spooky stories. It’s also a great nighttime activity . But anytime is a good time to hear creepy tales and explore they city’s underbelly. While New York City is famous for its bright lights, there’s a certain dark side to it.

Read on about tours that will take you to haunted attractions in NYC, where you’ll hear stories that are sometimes grim and disturbing, but always fascinating.

The Ghostlight Tour-Haunted Broadway

Exterior of the Belasco Theatre at night in New York City.

People may not think of Broadway plays and ghost tours in New York City at the same time, but it makes perfect sense that Broadway theaters would be haunted. After all, actors who enjoy the limelight have performed on their stages for generations. And just because an actor dies doesn’t mean she is ready to give up the spotlight.

On our Haunted Broadway tour, we learned that so many Broadway theaters are haunted that it led to the tradition of the ghostlight, a light on stage that remains lit throughout the night, long after the performance ends and every actor, spectator, and crew member have gone home. In the hopes the it will ward off ghosts, the ghostlight is kept lit in theaters on Broadway and in fact, all across America.

I love ghost tours for the history they reveal and this one, rich in Broadway legends, did not disappoint.

At the New Amsterdam Theatre, we learned about a ghost who has appeared to witnesses in a glittering emerald dress after her accidental death at the age of 25. Rituals to appease her are still performed regularly at the New Amsterdam.

Three images of supposed haunted places in New York City: The High Line, Marble Cemetery, and the Merchant's House Museum.

We also heard intriguing stories of a mysterious bone that was discovered at the Imperial Theatre when preparations were being made for the debut of Billy Elliott. And then there’s the Belasco Theatre, named for the prominent actor and theatrical producer. David Belasco earned the nickname, the Bishop of Broadway for his habit of wearing a long black clerical gown. Dressed in this outfit, the Bishop has often been spotted watching performances from the balcony, long after his death in 1931.

The Ghostlight Tour is perfect for Broadway theater lovers. The stories are rooted in historical facts but, true to the spirit of Broadway, include a dramatic flare, too. And though the tour discusses several true-life deaths, the details aren’t grim enough to exclude children. If you didn’t expect Broadway theaters to be among the most haunted places in New York City, you’ll love learning this history.

All tour guides, as well as the founder of the tour company, are local actors and if our guide was any indication, they’re also excellent storytellers.

East Village Haunted Manhattan Tour

A closed iron gate at the entrance to New York Marble Cemetery in New York City.

I loved this ghost tour for few different reasons. The haunted attractions included several well-known landmarks balanced with other, more secret spots in the East Village and the Bowery. And our tour guide Frankie was a talented storyteller who kept us engaged throughout the 90-minute tour, despite the fact that it took place on a rainy, chilly evening.

Frankie described the story of a ghost train at Astor Place, retold by passengers who believed they were stepping onto an uptown subway, only to find themselves inexplicably riding a plush passenger train instead.

The tour took us to well-known spots like McSorley’s Old Ale House, where Harry Houdini was known to drink, as well as to lesser-known locations like an 1800s cemetery whose residents are buried in marble vaults far below ground. And without giving too much away, Houdini wasn’t the only celebrity we heard about.

In addition to ghost encounters, you’ll also hear true stories of murder, suicides, and accidental deaths at a scattering of neighborhood locations.

The tour concludes at St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery, an imposing structure built in the late 18th century, and final resting place of a major historical figure. If you’re idea of a good ghost tour in New York City is one balanced with historical facts and paranormal occurrences, relayed in an engaging manner by a knowledgeable tour guide, this tour is an excellent choice.

NYC Gangsters & Ghosts Tour

A narrow pedestrian street lined with cafe tables and yellow lanterns strung overhead.

Hear a combination of gangster lore and ghost stories on this engaging tour that spans Chinatown, Little Italy, Washington Square Park, and more.

The anecdotes begin on Doyers Street in Chinatown, a curved alleyway where a gang battle so bloody once took place that it became known as the Bloody Angle. It most likely won’t escape your notice that this narrow pedestrian passage is now one of the most charming streets in New York and home to a popular dim sum restaurant that dates back to 1920.

In Little Italy, our tour guide Nate described the details of an cold-blooded 1972 murder at Umberto’s Clam House. He also pointed out various places in the neighborhood where infamous mobsters hung out, as well as a bar where famous film and television scenes have been filmed. The Little Italy portion of the tour makes this a great choice for fans of mobster movies.

Washington Square Park in New York City.

As we walked north through SoHo and Greenwich Village, we heard about the haunting of an NYC dorm, how residents still hear the shuffling of feet overhead. Our guide also talked about the 1911 fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, a tragedy that killed nearly 150 people, most of whom were young immigrant women and girls.

The tour concludes in Washington Square Park, a lively public space with a surprisingly dark past.

  • Tour company : NYC Gangsters and Ghosts

Dark Side of the High Line

Looking out onto Tenth Avenue from the High Line, at night in New York City.

When you take a ghost tour in New York City, you’ll not only learn some fascinating history you’ll be able to check some major landmarks off your itinerary.

And if you’ve walked on the popular elevated park known as the High Line during the day, wait until see it at night! The views stretch across the Hudson River to the west, to the twinkling lights of New York City streets to the east, and the new skyscrapers at Hudson Yards to the north.

The High Line runs on the far west side of Manhattan, along Tenth Avenue, a street once nicknamed Death Avenue. And you know with a name like that, it must have some stories suitable for a haunted walking tour in New York City.

The story begins in the 19th century, when a street level freight train barreled down Tenth Avenue, delivering products to the warehouses of the Meatpacking District. The trains hit and killed so many pedestrians that the avenue was assigned its grim nickname.

Looking north toward Hudson Yards from the High Line, at night in New York City.

In the 1930s, the railroad was finally elevated 30 feet above street level, which saved the lives of countless civilians, though conditions remained dangerous for railroad workers. One man in particular, Ezekiel Marcus, died on the job.

As our tour guide Meredith told us, Marcus’ ghost appeared 75 years later to express his disapproval of the High Line’s transformation from abandoned freight line to public park.

Throughout the tour, your guide will also point out places of historical interest and not to give too much away, several points were related to the 1912 tragedy of the Titanic, which was headed for New York City when it sunk in the North Atlantic, killing 1,500 people.

Paranormal Historical Investigation at Morris-Jumel Mansion

Exterior of Morris-Jumel Mansion museum in New York City.

If you’d love to tour Manhattan’s oldest house after hours, this paranormal investigation is for you! Morris-Jumel Mansion was built in 1765 and has served as, among other things, a country estate, a tavern, and a Revolutionary War headquarters.

It’s not only Manhattan’s oldest house, it’s also a well known haunted house in New York City, appearing on programs like Ghost Adventures and The Holzer Files .

Morris-Jumel Mansion, located in Washington Heights, is now a museum open to the public. They offer a variety of tours, including periodic Paranormal Historical Investigations . The investigations take place after the museum closes. You’ll join your tour guides as they take you to period rooms throughout the house, discussing the artifacts within them, telling stories about past residents, and describing evidence that shows some of those residents have lingered as ghosts.

Three images of supposed haunted places in New York City: KGB Bar, Morris-Jumel Mansion, the High Line, and the Belasco Theatre.

You’ll hear stories about the life and death of Eliza Jumel, the longest resident of the house and one-time wealthiest woman in New York City. She died in her bed in 1865 and more than one witness has seen evidence that she remains.

You’ll also hear about other residents and visitors, including servants, enslaved people, and troops who camped outside during the days of the Revolutionary War.

Tour guides provide participants with devices meant to detect paranormal activity, making you feel like you’re truly on a ghost hunt. You’re also allowed to fully enter the period rooms, which are roped off at the entrance during regular museum hours. Must be age 18 or older.

Candlelight Ghost Tours are also available at Morris-Jumel Mansion. They’re a somewhat condensed version of the full paranormal investigations. Must be age 13 or older.

  • Location : Morris-Jumel Mansion, 65 Jumel Terrace, New York, NY
  • Length : 2.5 hours.
  • Cost : $60.
  • Masks and proof of COVID-19 vaccination are required.

Candlelight Ghost Tour at Merchant’s House Museum

Exterior of Merchant's House Museum in New York City.

While Morris-Jumel Mansion is Manhattan’s oldest house, the Merchant’s House Museum stands out because it was continuously occupied by the same family for almost a century. Similar to Morris-Jumel, it is also known to harbor ghosts, making it one more Manhattan haunted house to add to your list.

The home was built on Fourth Street in 1832, in the neighborhood now known as the East Village . In 1835, a wealthy merchant named Seabury Tredwell purchased the home and lived there with his wife Eliza and their eight children.

On a Candlelight Ghost Tour at the Merchant’s House Museum, visitors will hear how at least eight people died in the home, among them Seabury, who passed away in 1865 just weeks before the Civil War ended.

A parlor with red antique furniture and a piano inside the Merchant's House Museum in New York City.

Gertrude, the Trewell’s youngest child, died in the house 1933 at the ago of 93. She was penniless at the time of her death, but she left the home furnished and decorated as it was throughout her lifetime.

Tour participants will have the chance to tour the home’s Greek Revival rooms, which still largely contain original Tredwell family furniture, paintings, and personal possessions. Throughout the tour, you’ll also hear about the odd events that lead many to believe some members of the Tredwell family, especially Gertrude, never fully left.

  • Location : Merchant’s House Museum, 29 E. Fourth Street, New York, NY
  • Length : 50 minutes.
  • Cost : $45. Members: $35.
  • Ghost tours are typically offered in the month of October.

As a final note, haunted tours in New York City, whether in a particular neighborhood or a haunted house, are a fun, engaging (though sometimes disturbing) way to discover a side of the Big Apple you many not otherwise see. Stay safe and happy ghost hunting!

Sometimes you don’t need a storied history to be a ghost. You just have to scare a group of kids.

The Imperial Theatre opened in 1923 and various musicals and plays have graced its stage in the last century. The most noteworthy of these shows was Billy Elliot. A musical based on the hit film, its big draw was music by Elton John and a talented group of Tony award winning youngsters.  Young girls  in the show claimed that their dressing room was haunted by a strange and powerful entity who would open and close doors at will and the name of that Broadway Ghost: Fred.

Therefore, while some believe that famed actress Ethel Merman probably haunts the old theatre, the cast of Billy Elliot will tell you a much different story.

The Belasco

Finally, the most noteworthy theatre on this list. David Belasco commissioned it to be built in 1907. While it is only the sixth oldest theater on Broadway, it most likely takes the lead as far as sightings are concerned.

David Belasco died in 1931 and consequently became one of the Broadway Ghosts. He is said to watch rehearsals and walk the halls whenever he pleases. Some crew members in the theatre will say, “Goodnight, Mr. Belasco” at the end of each night, just to appease him.

Those are the Broadway Ghosts that this intrepid blogger knows about and there are many others. Do you have a ghastly experience in a Broadway Theatre? Let us know in the comments! If you wanna see some of these theatres first hand, check out Inside Broadway Tours !

US Senator John McCain (2000)

Producers of the upcoming musical comedy Ghost Of John McCain have responded to angry comments made by the late senator’s daughter Meghan McCain , saying that they will again extend an invitation to Meghan and husband Ben Domenech to attend a reading of the musical before it opens Off Broadway this fall.

As Deadline reported Tuesday, Ghost of John McCain , a musical comedy set inside the brain of Donald Trump, will make its world premiere Off Broadway this fall. The musical, written by Scott Elmegreen and Drew Fornarola and produced by a team that includes political strategist Rose and John McCain’s longtime campaign consultant Fose, begins performances at New York’s Soho Playhouse on Labor Day Weekend. The engagement runs through November 5 – election day.

“This is trash,” Meghan McCain posted on X/Twitter about Deadline’s report about the Off Broadway debut of the musical comedy. She added, “nothing more than a gross cash grab by mediocre desperate people…I hope it bombs.”

In a lengthy statement, the producers have responded, providing additional details of the musical and its development.

“John McCain remains a universally respected and important figure in the ongoing dialogue about the state and future of American politics–and he certainly lives on inside the mind of Donald Trump,” the statement reads. “ Ghost of John McCain is a psychological exploration of what that might be like for the senator, as he gathers a ‘Greek Chorus’ coalition of Hillary Clinton, Eva Perón, Teddy Roosevelt, Taylor Swift, Lindsay Graham, Roy Cohn and Kanye West and everyone else squatting rent free up there to rebel against the former President’s relentless demands for affirmation.

“This show began as the passion project of John McCain’s first chief of staff, the late Grant Woods, who eulogized the senator beside President Biden before his own death in 2021. Our team has been in conversation with the McCain family ever since. Meghan and her husband were invited to our reading of the show this past winter, and they will be invited to our upcoming reading on May 9th as well. We think they will love it, just as audiences have to date. John McCain once said of his favorite novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls , that it instructed him to see the world as it is, with all its corruption and cruelty, and believe it’s worth fighting for anyway. Such is the power of art that Grant Woods set out to harness in this musical. We’ve been honored to carry on that work and can’t wait to share it with all of New York this coming election season.”

The producers’ response comes after two social media posts by Meghan McCain, who expressed her displeasure with the show in no uncertain terms:

This is trash – nothing more than a gross cash grab by mediocre desperate people. I hope it bombs. https://t.co/aGShaEwP4K — Meghan McCain (@MeghanMcCain) April 2, 2024
I am going to say this again – I don’t know the people who decided to make this trash, it is disrespectful to my family and father’s memory. It is just as gross as what Trump has done himself. I breathe fire for my family but wish I didn’t always have to. I hope this bombs. https://t.co/QN2xFecdT0 — Meghan McCain (@MeghanMcCain) April 3, 2024

The project made headlines in January when a development workshop was announced, drawing some consternation from the daughter of the late senator. “My family has not authorized it nor was aware of it,” Meghan McCain told The Messenger at the time. “I was as surprised as everyone else to see the announcement.”

Authored by Elmegreen, with Fornarola writing the music and lyrics, Ghost of John McCain will be directed by Catie Davis, who served as Associate Director on Broadway’s Beetlejuice and Moulin Rouge! The Musical . The cast and full creative team will be announced at a later date.

“I’m excited to join the team behind this wildly imaginative and quirky musical,” said Davis in a statement. “To build a theatrical world where political figures of past and present are held hostage inside Donald Trump’s brain, and his brain is a musical? What a delightfully fun challenge. The writing of Ghost of John McCain will have audience members leaning into the twists and turns of this timely, hilarious story.”

Producing is Quixote Productions, founded by political strategist and public relations executive Rose in conjunction with McCain consultant and public affairs executive Fose.

In a statement earlier this week announcing the Off Broadway debut , Rose said, “Our goal is not to be just another poker turning up the heat, but to bring some relief, relevance, and comedy to the body politic. We may be in a presidential election year, but this is an evergreen story anchored by the tension and dynamic between two titans of the past century. The musical is surreal.”

Added Fose, “Having served him for nearly two decades, I believe Senator McCain would laugh at this entertainment and be grateful his legacy continues to spark important conversation, from the serious to the absurd. Our hope is that this musical will remind America our democracy is worth fighting for.”
