Ineos Grenadiers bet on three leaders for 2023 Tour de France GC push

Form and condition rests will ultimately decide, but at the moment the British team are favouring the two Colombians and the young Spaniard

Egan Bernal

Ineos Grenadiers are once again planning a three-pronged attack at this summer’s Tour de France, with Carlos Rodríguez in line for shared leadership on his debut in the race.

The British team have failed to win yellow since Egan Bernal did so in 2019, and they are hoping that the Colombian will be fully recovered from his horror crash a year ago to lead them once again.

Question marks remain around his recuperation, but the team look almost certain to give Bernal’s fellow countryman Dani Martínez the chance to fight for overall honours, as he was afforded last year, only for illness to thwart him.

In what would be only the second time since their 2010 inception, it looks probable that the British team will not have a homegrown rider as leader, with young Spanish prodigy Rodríguez, 22 in February, the current favourite to be nominated for the third and final shared leadership role.

“It’ll be Dani, potentially Egan, and Carlos [as the leaders] in the Tour. After that we don’t know [the rest of the team],” the team’s sports director Steve Cummings told Cycling Weekly , before stressing that a lot can change between now and the startline in Bilbao on July 1.

It’s also understood that other proven Tour performers Tom Pidcock and Geraint Thomas could be in the frame for leadership.

“The season’s long, lots of things can happen, [and] January’s too early to be so specific about it but that’s our current plan. In May we will have a much clearer idea of specifics, how we’ll approach it, and how many riders we’ll protect.”

2018 winner Geraint Thomas rode to an impressive third last summer in what was likely his last ever appearance in the Tour, and that podium place was Ineos’ best return from a system of protecting more than two riders.

“We’re not insisting on a three-person attack,” Cummings said. “It’s quite difficult to decide. We have so many riders at a high level that it’s difficult to pick between them. The data we have, the performances they do, the feedback we get from them, it’s not clear [who should be leader]. It’s tricky.

“It [also] depends on Egan. He is still in rehab, and if he comes back then maybe that’ll all change. If he doesn’t [return to previous form], if it takes him longer to get back, then you have to decide whether you take him.

"He still has his medical appointments and he’s still in the rehab phase. We need patience and to let him go through the process.”

Egan Bernal

Both Bernal (centre) and Martínez (right) made their season debuts at the recent Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina.

Rodríguez only made his GrandTour debut at last season’s Vuelta a España, and he was in contention for a podium spot until a heavy crash on stage 18 affected him badly in the remaining stages. He valiantly held on for seventh overall , but ascension to joint leader at the Tour would be an indicator of just how highly Ineos rate the Andalucian.

“I wouldn’t say that he is definitely going, but he’s on the longlist - just like he was last year,” Cummings clarified. “He was on the longlist because of his rate of development and how mature he is as a rider, and it’s the same this year.”

Geoghegan Hart's time to shine

Meanwhile, Rodríguez’s teammate at the Vuelta, Tao Geoghegan Hart, is entering the final year of his contract with the team he has been part of since turning pro in 2017. The winner of the 2020 Giro d’Italia has failed to kick on since that win, owing to a mixture of illness, injuries and bad luck.

“He’s won a Grand Tour and there’s not many riders who’ve done that out there,” Cummings said. “History has told him what he is capable of.

“His condition will define the objective. It’s not for me to put parameters or limitations on what he’s capable of. We’ll support him 100% to feeling good and being consistent, as he was previously.

“It’s difficult to quantify what he is capable of. First things first, let’s get him back to some consistency. The level is so high and when you’re sick, injured, not quite 100%, someone’s snapping to take your place, there are fine margins. You miss out on one race and it affects your whole season. He’s just not had the best luck in terms of sickness - hopefully he’ll have better luck.”

Ineos Grenadiers have named the 2019 champion Egan Bernal among their Tour de France squad, as part of a multi-pronged assault on the race.

Bernal suffered a horrific crash in January 2022 when he rode into a bus at high speed in his home country, Colombia, while training. His long road to recovery has ramped up in recent weeks with encouraging appearances at the Tour de Romandie and Criterium du Dauphine, but a serious challenge for the yellow jersey appears unlikely against the sheer strength of reigning champion Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and two-time winner Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates).

Ineos’s best hope in the general classification may therefore lie with Bernal’s teammates, Dani Martinez and Carlos Rodriguez. Martinez was set to challenge for a podium finish last year before falling ill in the middle of the race, and the 27-year-old Colombian already has some impressive stage-race wins on his palmares at the Dauphine (2020) and Tour of the Basque Country (2022).

Rodriguez is the reigning Spanish national champion and a prodigious talent for whom Ineos hold high hopes. The 22-year-old has never ridden the Tour before but finished seventh last year at the Vuelta a Espana in what was his first grand tour. Alongside the champion pedigree of Bernal and the podium potential of Martinez, it makes for a varied but potentially conflicting trio of team leaders.

And that is not where Ineos’s race ends. Tom Pidock won a sensational victory atop Alpe d’Huez last year, which became the focus of one episode of Netflix’s docu-series, Tour de France: Unchained . Pidcock could himself climb the general classification ranks, having finished 16th last year while sacrificing himself to help Geraint Thomas on to the podium. But given Ineos’s plethora of GC options, Pidcock is more likely to go for individual stage wins like that on Alpe d’Huez, where he used his supreme descending skills to speed away from rivals before the final climb. Pidcock might even be eyeing a stint wearing the yellow jersey in what is a gruelling opening week in the Pyrenees, before the big contenders take charge in the Alps.

Thomas and Luke Rowe, the long-time road captain of Ineos (formerly Team Sky), are two notable omissions. Thomas was shifted to focus on the Giro d’Italia this year and fell agonisingly short of overall victory, and the 2018 Tour de France champion, who is now 37, has admitted he may never ride the race again. Rowe has missed out on selection to other domestiques.

Jonathan Castroviejo and Michal Kwiatkowski bring vast experience on the road, as does Omar Fraile – who himself might fancy trying for a breakaway stage win if allowed to roam free – and Doncaster’s 24-year-old Ben Turner makes up the eight-man squad.

TEAM INEOS GRENADIERS FOR THE TOUR DE FRANCE

captain ineos tour de france 2023

When it comes to dominating the Tour de France, over the last decade no team has proven as successful at the task as Team Ineos. For their 2022 the British based squad is relying on both race veterans like former winner Geraint Thomas and up and comers like Tom Pidcock.

INEOS HEADS TO THE TOUR

Team Release

The INEOS Grenadiers are proud to confirm the lineup to compete at the 2022 Tour de France with eight riders ready to go all in and attack the 109th edition of the race.

Fronted by the GC trio of 2018 Tour de France winner and 2022 Tour de Suisse champion Geraint Thomas, Tour of the Basque Country winner Dani Martinez, and multiple Tour de France stage winner Adam Yates, the team is completed by the formidable Jonathan Castroviejo, Filippo Ganna, Tom Pidcock, Luke Rowe and Dylan van Baarle.

Two-time reigning world time trial champion Ganna and all-round racer Pidcock are set to make their Tour de France debuts, while the experienced backbone of the Grenadiers is provided by Castroviejo, Rowe and Paris-Roubaix winner Van Baarle who arrive in Copenhagen with a combined 20 Tour de France starts.

INEOS Grenadiers Team Principal Sir Dave Brailsford said: “The competition this year is tougher than ever and that’s a great thing for the sport, the Tour and the fans. But we all know that anything can happen in cycling, especially over three weeks of hard racing across different terrains and weather conditions. This group of Grenadiers is the epitome of all that INEOS stands for. They have the grit, rigour and humour that we know is critical to success at the Tour and we can’t wait to get racing.”

INEOS Grenadiers Deputy Team Principal Rod Ellingworth said: “We’ve got a really dynamic and versatile group of riders that are ready to go full gas and really take this race on.

“In Adam, Dani and Geraint we have three fantastic GC heavyweights who can mount a real challenge. They have proved their form across the season and are lining up in Copenhagen in great shape.

“It’s also a proud moment for the team to see Filippo and Tom make their Tour de France debuts. They’re phenomenal riders who have big careers ahead of them and both are ready to leave their mark on the Tour. And no team could ask for three better super domestiques than Dylan, Jonathan and Luke. Collectively they have racing instincts and experience that are second to none.”

Jonathan Castroviejo – 35, Spain

Fresh off a courageous ride at the Giro d’Italia, Castroviejo brings an invaluable blend of experience and climbing skill. A selfless teammate, he has evolved from a time trial specialist to one of the best mountain support riders in the peloton. Often going above and beyond to take huge turns on the front, his steady support and calming presence will be key across the three weeks.

Filippo Ganna – 25, Italy

Filippo Ganna has rapidly risen to become one of the best time trialists in the sport. A two-time World Champion, the Italian starts his first Tour de France with the intention of replicating his incredible results at the Giro d’Italia. Ganna racked up six stage wins across two editions, pulling on the pink jersey in both 2020 and 2021. He’ll be gunning for the yellow jersey in Copenhagen, but will also play a key team role once the climbing begins.

Daniel Martínez – 26, Colombia

One of the most consistent general classification riders in the peloton this season, Martínez claimed overall victory at Itzulia Basque Country, in addition to an overall podium finish at Paris-Nice. The Colombian won a stage at the Tour de France in 2020 in the same year he won the Criterium du Dauphine. The climber will be one of the team’s three leaders this year as he begins his eighth Grand Tour.

Tom Pidcock – 22, Great Britain

One of the sport’s most exciting young talents, Pidcock has risen through the ranks, taking titles and world championships in cyclo-cross and mountain biking. Now in his second year as a pro on the road, the young Brit tackles his first Tour de France. In addition to gaining experience and learning from team mates, he’ll play an important team role on the flat and in the medium mountain stages.

Luke Rowe – 32, Great Britain

Lining up for a milestone 10th Grand Tour and eighth consecutive Tour de France appearance, Luke Rowe knows what this race is all about. A road captain since the early years of his career, the Welshman is a great leader and loves nothing more than battling it out for position in the peloton and crosswinds. He can also turn his hand to climbing and has form of setting an impressive tempo on the front for long periods.

Geraint Thomas – 36, Great Britain

One of the most experienced and well-liked riders in the sport, Geraint won the Tour de France in 2018, cementing his status as a British and Welsh hero. ‘G’ was also a runner up at the Tour de France one year later and knows exactly what it takes to win this race. With a background on the track and comfortable on any terrain, he is a true all-round talent. Whether he’s riding for overall victory like his performance at the recent Tour de Suisse or giving it his all to help the team, he is always all in for the win.

Dylan van Baarle – 30, Netherlands

Arriving in Copenhagen following a dream Classics season that saw him win Paris-Roubaix, Dylan has shown what an impressive and versatile rider he is. After battling it out across the cobbles during the spring, the Dutchman has the skills to transform himself into an elite mountain support rider for the Tour each year. His performances continue to improve and he will play a key role in setting a tempo on the climbs this year.

Adam Yates – 29, Great Britain

One of Britain’s best stage racers, Adam Yates holds a top-10 finish at all three Grand Tours and only just missed out on a Tour de France podium with a fourth in 2016. He knows how to ride at the sharp end of a three-week race and can produce a stinging turn of pace in the mountains. As a protected rider with a leadership role, he heads into his 11th Grand Tour ready to battle it out in the mountains.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

The Magic Touch of Ineos’ Manager

But first, a quick introduction of who is the Ineos Grenadiers. Team Ineos Grenadiers (formerly Team Sky) is a professional cycling team that competes in UCI WorldTour races, including the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia, and la Vuelta a Espana. The team was founded in 2010 by Dave Brailsford and is based in Manchester, England. Ineos is the title sponsor of the team, and the team is managed by Sir Dave Brailsford.

The team has a strong focus on performance and has a history of success at the highest level of professional cycling. Some of the team’s notable riders have included Chris Froome, Bradley Wiggins, Geraint Thomas, and Egan Bernal all of whom have won the Tour de France while riding for Team Ineos. In addition to its success in Grand Tours, the team has also had success in other races, including one-day classics and stage races.

Team Ineos is known for being the first team to use data and technology to optimize performance and has a reputation for being one of the most professional and well-organized teams in the sport.

In his book “ Atomic Habit ” James Clear explains how Sir Brailsford focussed on improving every single beat of everything related to cycling by 1%. When all are added the improvement is expected to be significant.

However, other top pro cycling teams have also joined the marginal gain optimization game.

2023 Ineos Grenadiers Plans

Ineos is losing some great riders in 2023 as they are racing for other teams or taking retirement. Dylan Van Baarle, who won the Paris-Roubaix 2022 is racing for Jumbo-Visma in 2023. Andrey Amador and Richard Carapaz are racing for EF-Education-EasyPost. Adam Yates is joining the UAE Team Emirates team, and Eddie Dunbar goes to the Australian Team Jayco-AlUla. Richie Porte is retiring from the professional road racing peloton.

While the team is losing a lot of great riders, some others are back in, and that is Egan Bernal . The Ineos Team is also investing in its future with some promising young riders including Carlos Rodrigues who has shown how good he is on the Vuleta a Espana 2022. It is the first WorldTour season for Joshua Tarling , and I look forward to seeing him racing. During his 14 days of racing in 2022, he won 6 times, including the World Championship ITT Junior and Chrono Des Nations Junior.

Geraint Thomas, Luke Plapp, Kim Heiduk, Magnus Sheffield, Connor Swift, Ethan, and Leo Hayter are listed to open the 2023 season in Australia on the Tour Down Under .

ROWE Luke, HEIDUK Kim, SWIFT Connor, TARLING Joshua, GANNA Filippo, WURF Cameron, SHEFFIELD Magnus are racing the Paris-Roubaix 2023 .

GEOGHEGAN HART Tao, ARENSMAN Thymen, DE PLUS Laurens, GANNA Filippo, PUCCIO Salvatore, SIVAKOV Pavel, SWIFT Ben, and THOMAS Geraint are riding the Giro d’Italia 2023 .

Egan Bernal , Thomas Pidcock, and Daniel Felipe Martinez are selected to challenge the Maillot Jaune on the Tour de France 2023 .

While the plans for the Vuelta a Espana 2023 will be decided upon the second part of the season, Carlos Rodriguez is most likely to be racing it.

Pinarello Bikes for Ever

Ineos team has been racing on Pinarello bikes since 2010 with the current contract going up to 2025 included. The main bike models are the Pinarello Dogma F for road races and the Bolide for Time Trial races. The bike setup stays consistent with the previous seasons. The Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 12-speeds groupset and Shimano wheels. The team stays with the Continental tires . The rider’s contact points also remain the same as in 2022. They are the MOST handlebar, Fizik saddle, and Shimano Dura-Ace pedals.

Each rider relies on a Garmin cycling computer to provide live data from their Shimano PowerMeter and their Core Body sensor .

The riders of Team Ineos-Grenadiers wear Kask helmets, Sungod sunglasses, Bioracer Pro Team jerseys, and bib shorts. The Ineos Grenadiers do not have a shoe sponsor at the team level. It allows each rider to wear cycling shoes that best fit him.
