Cavetown at Frost Amphitheater

Bittersweet Dazed Tour is a highly-awaited event by indie music fans. It is headlined by Cavetown, a project by Robin Skinner. He is a singer-songwriter, record producer, and Youtuber. With musically-inclined parents, his father being a choir director and his mother a professional Baroque flutist, and music teacher, it is no wonder that he developed musical skills at a young age.

His career began in the form of a Youtube channel in 2012, where he uploaded an original song titled "Haunted Lullaby". He released his first album on Bandcamp at the age of 14. His popularity rose to new heights when he broke out with his album, "Lemon Boy" in 2018. His latest album, "Worm Food," was released in 2022.

Maia, or also known as mxmtoon, is also a guest artist at this festival. Like Cavetown, she is also a singer-songwriter and Youtuber. Most of her music employs the ukulele and transports her audience to emotionally transparent and confessional lyrics. Her songs speak the truth of teenage problems and internal issues we don't outgrow. She started recording music secretly, but her online presence grew massively over time.

Rick Montgomery's fame started when his songs hopped on the viral train on Tiktok in 2020. That same year, he was signed with Warner Records after a large bidding war. However, it wasn't instant fame. His career began in 2016 when he released "Montgomery Ricky", his first studio album. He went on a hiatus in 2018 to earn money as a social media marketer. In 2020, he planned on entirely quitting making music, but his two singles, "Mr Loverman" and "Line Without A Hook", pulled him out and lit up the explosion in his popularity.

Grant Perez or grentperez, was initially known for his song covers of popular music in his Youtube series "Attic Sessions". He is an indie-pop player based in Sydney who likes experimenting with his art to express himself. Known as an unapologetic Gen-Z with an old soul, he now has incredibly well-received original songs. "Cherry Wine", his debut single in 2021, became an international sensation while hitting number one on the Spotify Viral Chart in his home country, Canada, and Singapore.

There is no better Sunday on July 23, 2023, than in Frost Amphitheater. The magic of an amphitheater with modern amenities will surely immerse you in an incredible experience of golden voices, melodic strums, and beautiful words. All your favorite artists will be in one place, so get your tickets now!

Bittersweet Daze Tour With Cavetown & Friends: A Magical Melody of Music and Emotions REVIEW+PHOHTOS: Cavetown, mxmtoon, Ricky Montgomery & grentperez at Frost Amphitheater 7/23/23

STANFORD, CA -Frost Amphitheater at Stanford University morphed into the throbbing, pulsing heart of the Bittersweet Daze tour, and the moment I strutted into that hallowed space, the electrifying vibe of sheer, unadulterated fan enthusiasm was so palpable, I almost drowned in it. On deck for this enchanting evening was a lineup as diverse and enthralling as the plot of your favorite Netflix drama, headlined by none other than indie-pop sensation Cavetown and featuring the vibrant harmonies of eclectic artists like mxmtoon, Ricky Montgomery, and the ethereal grentperez.

Hailing from the vibrant cityscape of Sydney, Australia, grentperez ushered in the evening with his understated charisma and lyrical allure, an exciting international addition to this local tour. His music carries a unique tonal signature, a harmonious blend of indie-pop interwoven with striking strands of electro-soul. His style conjures an ambiance reminiscent of youthful vigor, unchained freedom, and a palpable emotional rapport, resonating beautifully with the eager audience.

Under the glistening stage lights, grentperez seemed to tap into a hidden reservoir of enchanting energy, his infectious smile illuminating the venue, rivaling the brilliance of the spotlight itself. Each of his songs, a sonic work of art, meticulously crafted and imbued with narratives that touch the soul. They resonated deeply with the audience, their poignant lyrics lingering in the air, interweaving a rich tapestry of shared experiences, emotions, and a collective memory of an evening that’ll echo in hearts for times to come.

Taking the stage next was Ricky Montgomery, a shining embodiment of the pop-rock dynamo he’s renowned to be. His exuberant persona magnetized every onlooker, dominating not just the visual sphere but also the sonic domain within the amphitheater. His set was an exhilarating roller coaster ride, his infectious vibrancy cascading through the multitude, sparking a euphoria that mirrored his own explosive energy.

Watching Ricky perform is akin to witnessing a beautifully choreographed dance with the wild, the unpredictable. Each note, each movement, synchronizing perfectly with the tumultuous heartbeat of rock and roll. In a moment that encapsulated his unbridled spirit, Ricky leaped off the stage, darting towards his audience in an audacious display of passion. His interactive performance was not just for his fans, but with them, creating a shared experience that transcended the ordinary.

Ricky Montgomery exemplifies that music is much more than just a feast for the ears. It’s an immersive life experience, a raw emotion that touches the deepest parts of your soul. His music creates an indelible etching on your psyche, an imprint that lingers, reverberating long after the last strum has faded. His performance was a testament to the transformative and enduring power of music, and a vibrant reminder of why we connect so profoundly with this incredible art form.

A palpable wave of anticipation washed over the audience as the Bay Area’s beloved native, mxmtoon, claimed the stage. Homecoming gigs carry a unique allure, a rare blend of familiarity and celebration, and it was clear she was basking in the affection radiating from the hometown crowd. Her music, a symphony of paradoxically melancholic yet heartening tunes, feels like a comforting embrace in the midst of a biting winter day.

However, it was the ethereal tableau of her live performance – an enchanting medley of melodious tunes, spontaneous yet graceful dance movements, and the intimate, nostalgic strumming of her ukulele – that daubed the evening in shades of magical reverie. Coupled with her heartfelt lyricism and the radiant charm of her persona, she set the stage and our hearts aglow. The audience, including this humble scribe and lifelong fan, were mesmerized, morphing into a beautifully harmonized choir, bound by the shared euphoria of this musical enchantress’s captivating spell.

At last, the moment of zenith arrived – Cavetown emerged, assuming his rightful place as the grand finale. His performance was nothing short of hypnotic, an exquisite blend of tracks from his fresh-off-the-press album “Worm Food” and timeless classics like “Devil Town,” creating a soundscape that shall remain etched in our hearts. I’ve been trailing Cavetown’s journey since his YouTube days, a devout fan caught in his lyrical and sonic web. His music strikes chords within me as he candidly sings about mental health, identity, and sexuality, in a world that often prefers a closed conversation.

During his set, Cavetown had an intimate heart-to-heart about his song “This Is Home.” He confessed that while the song may not echo his personal sentiments as potently as it once did, he continues to perform it, recognizing its significance to his fans. It’s a melody spun around the tumultuous journey of self-identity, addressing aromantic and asexual experiences.

My connection to Cavetown’s music runs deep. It forms a safe haven, validating emotions and experiences that often go unvoiced within the LGBTQIA+ community. This commitment to connection and support expands beyond his lyrical genius, his concerts evolving into spaces of collective solidarity. This evening at the Frost Amphitheater bore witness to this ethos. Pride flags fluttered as silent sentinels amidst the crowd, reinforcing the atmosphere of acceptance and respect. Smiles were generously shared among concert-goers, adding emotional richness to the Bittersweet Daze tour, transforming it into an outpouring of communal joy and unity.

The night held an unexpected treasure when mxmtoon and Ricky Montgomery joined Cavetown on stage, delivering a goosebump-inducing performance of their latest collaboration single, “Nobody Loves Me.” This confluence of talents was a dream manifested for a long-time devotee like myself.

The entire concert was an immersive journey, each artist a distinctive brushstroke on a vibrant canvas. The atmosphere was a living entity, pulsating with joyous anticipation and love from beginning to end. The Bittersweet Daze tour has inscribed itself as a standout in concert experiences, and it would be an absolute miss not to partake if opportunity knocks. Cavetown’s ‘Bittersweet Daze’ tour comes to Bay Area

“Happy-sounding sad music,” the way indie-pop artist mxmtoon introduced her performance, initially felt like just a side comment. However, it perfectly encapsulates the bright, poppy sound and sad lyrics of the artists at “Bittersweet Daze.”

cavetown tour stanford

The concert tour, which came to Stanford’s Frost Amphitheater on July 23, opened with grentperez followed by Ricky Montgomery, mxmtoon and headliner Cavetown.

As a new listener to many of these artists, I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised — and I was. Each artist not only showcased their voice but displayed their personality, cultivating a truly memorable evening.

If it was not obvious from the many posters of his face in the audience, grentperez had an extremely passionate fan base. People were screaming and jumping aggressively, and grentperez matched this energy perfectly.

Throughout the set, grentperez connected with the audience and even taught us how to say “I love you” in Tagalog — a tribute to his Filipino roots. It was evident that he returned his fans’ love when he came back to wave from the side of the amphitheater and take photos with a few lucky concertgoers.

While he opened his set with high-energy songs, it was his more somber song, “Clementine,” that stood out. His voice was flawless, well controlled and effectively relayed the emotion of the song, sounding exactly like the recorded version.

Despite being the shortest set, grentperez was able to convey his essence as a performer and leave the audience wanting more. On the drive home, I could not help but play some of his songs.

  • Ricky Montgomery

It was immediately clear that Ricky Montgomery was going to have a strong stage presence and personality. His movements and singing during “Line Without a Hook” activated the audience, with many screaming the lyrics so loud that I could feel my own throat hurt.

Montgomery quickly went from loud and energetic to quiet and somber, performing “Black Fins,” a heart-wrenching song about discovering his father’s body. I felt the emotion in his voice with every word. Performances like these remind me of the importance of music, and that storytelling can lead to healing.

In yet another mood swing, Montgomery went from a depressing song to the best merchandise plug I have ever seen, truly highlighting his humor. He told the audience that he had something personal to say, only to start screaming about his new merchandise and that music was “a side job.”

Like the other performers, Montgomery showed appreciation for his bandmates, allowing them to shine and to be more than background players. When he, his drummer and guitarist finished with “Mr. Loverman,” all of their energies matched, providing an immaculate end to the set.

As she ran on the stage and greeted her fans, I was left with the feeling that I wanted to be mxmtoon’s friend. Maybe it is the fact that she is a Bay Area native or that she herself is not that much older than me, but her music felt very relatable.

I was dancing right from the start of the set with “fever dream.” Even though I had listened to the song many times before, the live drums, guitar and keys made me feel like I was listening to it for the first time. If I could, I would play this live performance on repeat.

Being from Oakland, this was mxmtoon’s hometown show, so she did not shy away from Bay Area references. During “sad disco,” she sings, “Mom and dad are at Half Moon Bay,” and while introducing “seasonal depression” she warned us that some “SoCal slander” was coming. These moments felt personal and like this audience was getting special treatment.

The mood of the concert changed as mxmtoon pulled out her ukulele and sang a few acoustic songs. This diversified her set and gave me further appreciation for her voice and storytelling ability.

Even though mxmtoon is best known for her TikTok famous song “prom dress,” this concert proved to me that she is so much more than a hit song and that her talents will give her a long music career.

By the time Cavetown arrived on stage, the sun had completely set, allowing colorful lighting to shine. Fans predicted the next track based on the color, which only heightened excitement in the crowd.

During “Hug All Ur Friends,” Cavetown played his ukulele and sang solo while his three bandmates sat together in the background. In the end, they all hugged each other, which seemed to inspire audience members to hug their friends as well.

I was initially confused by the number of stuffed frogs in the crowd, but it made sense when Cavetown played “frog” and fans threw theirs on the stage. He picked one up, hugged and held it throughout the song, another cute moment of the concert.

Before playing “This Is Home,” Cavetown said he wrote the song from a headspace he is no longer in, but now that he has overcome it, he can dedicate it to his fans. This performance was yet another beautiful moment, as Cavetown waved pride flags and the crowd sang along to this emotional song.

After leaving the stage, he came back with the band for “Devil Town” with high spirits and strong vocals. The crowd was extremely loud for this song, and experiencing this live performance was truly amazing. Through it all, he maintained flawless vocals and a wholesome stage presence by constantly checking up on the crowd.

One constant in each act made this concert memorable: the bands. They were high energy, extremely skilled and reminded me why I love live music. No matter how many times you stream a song, nothing compares to a live performance.

Recent tour reviews

I had so much fun at the concert!!

Spookyghostboy & HUNNY were amazing!!

Really good vibes and the volume was perfect omg.

The people were also really nice and ofcourse Cavetown was amazing!! I feel like he really interacted with the public and I love how he plays a lot of instruments himself during the concert.

It was really fun and I have nothing to complain about.

Best concert for so far!!

It was a really wholesome experience. Robin is soft and friendly and the audience was kind and supportive and the music was amazing live. The opener Field Medic was also a very interesting and wonderful choice!! His music is not what I expected but I grew to love it very quickly. Overall, my partner and I joy-cried several times and I didnt want it to end.

Cavetown was probably one of, if not the best concert I’ve been to. Robbie has such a good and wholesome energy, and the crowd was also very chill and had a great vibe. The two openers were great and did a good job warming up the crowd. Robbie’s live vocals are amazing (they are nearly identical to the studio recorded songs) and he genuinely presented himself as a nice and kind person. Overall, I would go again in a heartbeat. I highly suggest you see him!

Cavetown Teams Up With Mxmtoon, Ricky Montgomery, And Grentperez For “Bittersweet Daze” U.S. Headline Tour

Cavetown Teams Up With Mxmtoon, Ricky Montgomery, And Grentperez For “Bittersweet Daze” U.s. Headline Tour, Yours Truly, News, April 21, 2024

Cavetown , the multi-RIAA Platinum and Gold certified singer-songwriter and producer, is set to embark on his US headline tour, “Bittersweet Daze,” this summer. The tour will feature Mxmtoon , Ricky Montgomery, and Grentperez , artists handpicked by Cavetown himself. The 12-date tour will kick off on July 20th in Los Angeles at the iconic Greek Theatre and conclude on August 5th in Worcester, MA at The Palladium Outdoors. This tour marks Cavetown’s first tour in the US since spring 2022 and is in support of his highly praised album, worm food, which was released in fall 2022.

Worm food, Cavetown’s first full-length album since 2020’s Sleepyhead, is an elaborately realized body of work that gives voice to our own most intimate emotions. As with all his previous works, Cavetown produced the album on his own at his home studio, infusing his understated alt-pop with a powerful new vitality. The album has received widespread critical acclaim and has solidified Cavetown’s position as one of the most innovative musicians in the industry.

In addition to the album, Cavetown has also announced the formation of the This Is Home Project, a foundation aimed at donating to various organizations that empower and support LGBTQ+ youth. The first annual This Is Home Project Benefit Show was held in New York City in January, where Cavetown and other bedroom-pop and DIY musicians performed, including mxmtoon, Chloe Moriondo, and others. All proceeds were donated to New Alternatives, a New York City charity focused on ending homelessness for LGBTQIA+ youth. The This Is Home Project will also benefit $1 from every ticket sold for the “Bittersweet Daze” tour.

Pharrell, P!Nk And Victoria'S Secret In Legal Battle Over The Popstar'S Latest Venture, Yours Truly, News, April 21, 2024

Cavetown’s US tour this past spring was a huge success, with over 50,000 tickets purchased and sold-out venues across the country , including the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles and Terminal 5 in New York City. He recently concluded a headline tour in Europe and the UK, including selling out his largest headline show to date in London at the Eventim Apollo, with over 5,000 fans attending. With the success of his previous tours and the critical acclaim of his latest album, “Bittersweet Daze” is poised to be another huge success for Cavetown and his fans.

Cavetown Announces Tour with Support from Mother Mother

H ot on the release of his punchy yet dreamy EP, Little Vice , alternative artist Cavetown has announced a tour with support from Canadian rock band Mother Mother. The series of performances kicks off in June, continuing until July.

Dates & Locations

Cavetown’s tour starts strong on June 7 th in Phoenix, followed by shows in Los Angeles, San Diego, Berkeley and Troutdale. He’ll continue performing alongside Mother Mother and Destroy Boys in Vancouver, Seattle, Salt Lake City and Morrison. At the tail end of June, Cavetown and company are headed south to perform in Dallas, Austin, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Atlanta.

July kicks off with Washington, moving to Philadelphia, Toronto, Boston, New York and Detroit. The tour closes out on the 13th in Chicago.

Eclectic and Electric

Cavetown’s tour is sure to be magical, especially with Little Vice exploring all sorts of interesting corners of sound. Equal parts ethereal, eclectic and electric, the new EP buzzes with an energy that will take on a whole new life played live. “alone” packs a punch with its crunchy soundbites and vocals. At the same time, it balances a soothing feel with its twinkling melodies. “let them know they’re on your mind” breathes a punk persona into Cavetown’s dreamy pop, merging worlds in a whole new way. The EP as a whole is distinct, unique only to Cavetown and his sound.

Support from Mother Mother promises even more energy to each show. Their most recent release, Grief Chapter , complements Cavetown perfectly. Impressive guitar riffs in tracks like “To My Heart” and “Explode!” parallel some of the underlying energy in Little Vice . Their bashful sound also acts as a nice foil to the more relaxed side of Cavetown’s sound, seen on laid-back tracks like “glacier meadow” or “obvious.”
