How to Claim Your Unused Qantas and Jetstar COVID Travel Credits

Lauren Rouse Avatar

Do Qantas COVID travel credits expire?

During a senate committee in late August, airline officials from Qantas and Jetstar admitted that the company is holding around $520 million in unused travel credits since the COVID-19 outbreak.

A COVID credit refers to travel credit for bookings up to and including September 30, 2021. For Jetstar customers, this is referred to as a COVID credit voucher.

While, initially, these credits had an expiration date of the end of 2023, Qantas and Jetstar have since caved to the pressure and removed the expiry dates on COVID flight credits.

“Qantas customers with COVID credits can request a cash refund, and Jetstar customers can use their COVID vouchers for flights, indefinitely.” The company said in a press release about the extension.

Qantas elaborated, saying that COVID credits can only be put towards flights until December 31 , after which customers will need to request a cash refund due to “system limitations.”

Qantas also stated that from September 4, it will offer an incentive of double the amount of Frequent Flyer points for any COVID credits used prior to December 31, 2023.

Jetstar extends validity of travel vouchers for use to 2023

Posted by | Feb 26, 2021 | Aviation | 0 |

Today, Jetstar announced they will give customers more time to redeem vouchers issued due to the impact of COVID-19. Jetstar Airways and Jetstar Asia will extend all travel vouchers issued as a result of COVID-19 disruptions to have an expiry date of December 2022. As Jetstar’s flights are published up to one year in advance, this means customers will be able to use their vouchers for travel up until December 2023.

Extensions of unused travel vouchers will be automatically processed through March and April, and customers will receive an email with the extension back to the email address attached to their voucher.

Vouchers are multi-use and can be used across multiple bookings – any outstanding credit from one booking can be used towards another. Customers can check their remaining credit amount and voucher expiry by visiting the voucher balance portal.

In addition, for customers who have booked a Jetstar Asia (3K) flight through jetstar.com between 7 March 2020 and 30 June 2021 for travel before 30 September 2021, Jetstar will offer one fee-free date change, subject to fare difference.

The latest announcement enhances Jetstar’s Fly Flexible program that ensure customers can book with confidence. For more information, please read our Fly Flexible Travel Alert.

Simple Flying

Jetstar's different fare types explained.

When booking tickets, Jetstar passengers face a daunting array of fares and bundles. Let’s take a simplified look...

Australian low-cost carrier Jetstar has an impressive variety of fares available to passengers when they come to book. With its low basic fares and add-on bundles, the airline caters to everyone, from those on a tight budget to business travelers who are prepared to pay a premium for greater comfort and flexibility.

This model is fairly typical among low-cost carriers worldwide, offering a low base fare, with the option to purchase extras such as seat selection and baggage - these ancillary sales are a vital source of revenue. Let’s take a closer look at what Jetstar offers…

Economy class fares

Jetstar's most basic and affordable fare is the Starter fare, as part of which, everything except the 7 kg hand luggage allowance needs to be purchased separately. Passengers can choose to add a bundle to their Starter fare, with three options available – Plus, Max, and Flex.

  • Starter Plus – this popular bundle includes a 20 kg checked bag, Standard seat selection, inflight food and drink, loyalty points, and no change fee.
  • Starter Max – the most complete of Jetstar’s economy class fares, the Starter Max bundle includes a 30 kg checked bag, Upfront or Extra legroom seat selection, and the option of a refund in the form of a credit voucher.
  • Starter Flex – in addition to 14 kg hand luggage, no change fee, and credit voucher refunds, this flexible fare catering more to business travelers is the only one to allow free-of-charge same-day flight changes.

Bundles must be added at the time of purchase, with prices varying according to the route, but typically ranging from AU$30 ($21) to AU$50 ($35) more than the Starter fare on a short hop from Melbourne (MEL) to Sydney (SYD), and between AU$100 ($70) and AU$150 ($106) more on a longer flight between Melbourne and Singapore (SIN).

Business class fares

All Jetstar business class passengers are able to carry 14 kg hand luggage, and 30 kg checked baggage, and are offered food and drink onboard, inflight entertainment, and comfort packs (or Chill Kits , as Jetstar calls them). Business class passengers can also make use of priority boarding.

To be eligible for flight cancelation (at a fee), passengers must opt for the Business Class Max bundle. This is also the only fare option offered by Jetstar to include lounge access.

Jetstar’s short-haul fleet does not feature a business class cabin, so business class fares are only available on routes operated by the airline’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Each Dreamliner carries a total of 335 passengers in a two-class configuration – 21 in business class and 314 in business class.

Rebounding from the pandemic

Jetstar today operates from eight bases nationwide, the largest of which is Melbourne Airport. According to data from ch-aviation.com , its fleet is made up of 78-strong fleet is made up of 57 Airbus A320s, ten Airbus A321s, and 11 Boeing 787-8s. Following the pandemic shutdown, the Qantas subsidiary has been working to restore its route network, and currently flies to 38 domestic and international destinations across 11 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, and the US.

As part of its ongoing fleet renewal project, Jetstar has already received four of its 20 Airbus A321LRs , and is awaiting delivery of a further 20 Airbus A321XLRs , which are due to arrive from 2024.
