Kids cruise free: 7 cruise lines offering family deals in 2024

Gwen Pratesi

Cruise vacations give families a chance to reconnect and create shared memories. But cruise fares for three or four people can add up, especially when you consider extras like flights, hotels and excursions. One solution? Share a cabin and save with a "kids cruise free" deal.

Many cruise lines — including family favorites like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line — offer free kids fares and other cruise deals for kids sporadically throughout the year. A few always let kids sail free. You might have the best luck finding family-friendly discounts during wave season , which falls between January and March, when cruise lines have some of the best pricing of the year.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

To make your family trip more affordable, here's a list of family-friendly cruise lines where kids cruise free (or on the cheap) when you time your booking to coincide with a short-term promotion. These incentives change frequently, and the deals can sell out fast, so you might need to be flexible on where you sail and when you go. Always read the fine print before booking to catch any hidden costs or restrictions.

MSC Cruises

child free cruise ships

MSC Cruises frequently offers its "Kids Sail Free" promotion throughout the year in combination with other limited-time sales. Kids 17 and younger sail free as a third or fourth guest in most cabins. (Yacht Club rooms are excluded.)

Some deals might also include discounted fares, along with cabin upgrades, flexible booking options or freebies (like beverage packages or Wi-Fi), so mom and dad might get a perk or two as well. The "Kids Sail Free" offer is combinable with MSC Cruises' discount program for healthcare workers and active-duty or retired military.

Kids will love MSC Cruises for its kids club partnership with Lego and waterslides enhanced by virtual reality. Its pizza is among some of the best in the industry.

Norwegian Cruise Line

child free cruise ships

Norwegian Cruise Line offers free kids fares via its "Free at Sea" promotion . The offer gives cruisers complimentary booking perks, including free specialty dining, free beverage packages, shore excursion credit, free Wi-Fi and discounted rates for extra guests in a cabin (including kids).

With the latter offer, you can access free or $99-per-person fares for third and fourth guests, regardless of age. This special pricing applies to select sailings and only when the additional passengers share a cabin with the first and second guests.

NCL often offers discounted cruise fares for the first two guests in combination with the "Free at Sea" promotion. Additional perks to help a family's travel budget might include free airfare for the second guest or reduced deposits, depending on the particular promotion running when you book.

Choose Norwegian's newest cruise ships for wow-factor family activities such as go-kart racing, laser tag and waterslides. The line's casual ambience will appeal to kids who don't like being forced to dress up for dinner.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line offers promotional pricing, including its "Kids Cruise Free" program , throughout the year. The restrictions might change, but the bottom-line savings remain the same.

At press time, the line is running a deal where third and fourth guests under age 18 can sail for free on select Caribbean, Mexico and Panama Canal sailings. (Taxes and fees are additional.) The deal is limited to two children per booking.

Parents and caregivers will want to look for additional promotions that might include free balcony upgrades, onboard credit and reduced deposits. Some throw in a complimentary "Have It All" premium package , which includes specialty dining, a beverage package, complimentary shore excursions (the number depends on the length of the cruise) and Wi-Fi. Otherwise, families can upgrade to the more inclusive package for a discounted price.

Holland America is ideal for multigenerational families traveling together who like to go exploring in port and listen to live music on board.

Royal Caribbean

child free cruise ships

Royal Caribbean 's "Kids Sail Free" promotion is offered periodically throughout the year. Not every deal is the same, but the line typically offers free cruise fares to children 12 years old or younger who sail as additional guests with two full-fare-paying passengers. This is in addition to occasional offers for onboard credit and a discount on a second guest.

Be sure to read the fine print, as the free cruises for kids come with many restrictions, such as blackout dates over major holidays and school vacation periods and minimum sailing lengths.

Royal Caribbean also occasionally offers a deal where "Kids Sail for Less," which usually includes 25% off the fare for additional passengers in a cabin. This promotion has no age limitation, so it's open to any extra guests sharing accommodations with two full-fare-paying passengers.

Royal Caribbean is a favorite with families who love its big-ship attractions, including ice skating and high-diving shows, onboard splash parks and waterslides, rock climbing walls, miniature golf, laser tag, escape rooms and zip lines. Its enormous kids clubs cater to all ages, from babies to teens, and its private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , is a top destination for families with its multiple beaches and pumped-up water park.

Look for family discounts on Royal Caribbean's deals page .

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises doesn't usually let kids cruise free, but the luxury line does offer reduced fares for kids ages 17 and younger on select sailings during the summer and holiday season. These fares start at $999 per child (or young adult) sailing as the third or fourth guest in a suite and vary in price, depending on the voyage.

At press time, Regent is advertising a "Kids Sail Free" promotion on select itineraries. The offer is a per-person, cruise-only fare that is available to kids ages 17 years or younger at the time of sailing. They must sail as a third guest in a suite accompanied by an adult who is 21 years of age or older.

Regent always includes unlimited complimentary shore excursions, so kids can explore and stay active while cruising in Alaska, Europe, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal or other destinations included in the promotion.

CroisiEurope

child free cruise ships

River cruise line CroisiEurope's Family Club cruises let kids up to age 16 sail free or at reduced rates of up to 30% off on select sailings.

Because the line's ships have few rooms that can accommodate more than two passengers, the line has waived the single supplement for families on these sailings. That means two parents and one child can book two cabins for the price of one. (Each parent pays for one berth in each cabin, and the child travels free.)

In 2024, you can find kids-cruise-free deals on CroisiEurope river cruises in Portugal, Spain and Italy, as well as the Rhine River. For Family Club sailings to Croatia, children under 16 years of age receive a 30% discount.

This Family Club cruise deal is limited to two children per paying adult. Supplemental fees might be added for upgraded rooms. On these sailings, optional excursions are geared toward kids, and a menu for younger palates is available in onboard dining venues.

On all other sailings, the river cruise line offers a 20% discount for kids younger than 10 years of age. Children under 2 always sail free.

Star Clippers

If you're planning a multigenerational family getaway, consider booking a voyage on one of Star Clipper's tall ships. Currently, kids between 3 and 17 can sail free with one or two adults in the same cabin on select three- to nine-night 2024 and 2025 sailings in the Caribbean, Central America and the Mediterranean. (For this promotion, you must book by April 30, 2024.)

If two children are traveling with two adults (in specific room categories), the line accommodates the family in two individual cabins. What's more, grandparents ages 65 and older can join in the fun and receive a 10% discount on cruise fares.

Kids can imagine themselves as sailors or pirates with onboard activities such as knot tying and climbing the ship's mast. Older kids especially will enjoy water sports right from the ship.

Ultimate Guide to Child-Free Caribbean Cruise Itineraries

by Judith Eve | Feb 26, 2024 | Cruise Planning & Cruiser Lifestyle

child free cruise ships

Imagine setting sail on a serene journey across the azure waters of the Caribbean, where the only sounds are the gentle lapping of the waves and the clink of ice in your cocktail. This isn't just any cruise—it's a child-free Caribbean cruise, tailored for those seeking a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

These exclusive itineraries promise an uninterrupted escape where the focus is on relaxation, fine dining, and breathtaking landscapes, all without the pitter-patter of little feet. Whether you're a couple looking for romance or a solo traveler in search of tranquility, child-free cruises offer the perfect setting to unwind and indulge in the beauty of the Caribbean.

Benefits of Child-free Cruises

Child-free Caribbean cruises have been gaining popularity among adults seeking a peaceful getaway. One of the main benefits of these cruises is the unparalleled quiet and relaxation they offer. Without the sounds of children playing or crying, guests can fully immerse themselves in the tranquility of the sea and enjoy uninterrupted relaxation. This calm environment is particularly appealing to those in need of a break from the hectic pace of daily life.

In addition to the serene atmosphere, child-free cruises cater specifically to adult preferences and interests. From sophisticated dining experiences featuring gourmet meals and fine wines to adult-oriented entertainment and enrichment activities, everything is designed with an adult audience in mind. These cruises often feature:

  • Live Jazz Nights
  • Wine Tasting Sessions
  • Culinary Workshops
  • Art Auctions

This focus ensures that every aspect of the cruise, from dining to entertainment, aligns with the tastes and interests of adult passengers.

Moreover, child-free cruises offer an ideal setting for romantic getaways. Couples can enjoy undisturbed moments together, whether it's a quiet dinner under the stars, a couple's spa treatment, or simply lounging by the pool without any disruptions. The privacy and adult-oriented atmosphere foster romantic connections, making these cruises a popular choice for anniversaries, honeymoons, or simply a retreat to rekindle romance.

Solo travelers also find great value in child-free cruises. The adult-only environment makes it easier to find tranquility and indulge in personal interests without the typical family-oriented cruise activities. Many child-free cruises host meet-and-greet events or communal dining options, encouraging interactions among guests with shared interests, making it easier for solo travelers to meet new people in a comfortable setting.

Finally, the freedom to design the itinerary without considering family-friendly activities means these cruises can venture to more exotic or less-traveled destinations. This opens up a world of adventure for those eager to explore off-the-beaten-path locales in the Caribbean, from hidden beaches to small, authentic towns that provide a unique glimpse into the local culture.

Each of these benefits contributes to the appeal of child-free Caribbean cruises, offering adults a tailored experience that caters exclusively to their desires for relaxation, romance, and adventure.

Selecting the Perfect Caribbean Itinerary

child free cruise ships

When it comes to choosing the perfect Caribbean cruise itinerary for a child-free voyage, travelers are often met with a myriad of options, each offering its own unique blend of destinations, activities, and experiences. The key to selecting the right cruise lies in understanding what one seeks from their holiday. Whether it's lounging on pristine beaches, diving into vibrant cultures, or exploring exotic landscapes, knowing one's preferences is crucial.

Firstly, duration plays a significant role in the decision-making process. Cruise itineraries can range from short getaways of a few days to extended voyages lasting several weeks. For those short on time but seeking a quick escape, a 3 to 5-day cruise might hit the spot, offering a brief respite without the commitment of a long vacation. However, for travelers eager to fully immerse themselves in the Caribbean's serene beauty and rich cultural tapestry, opting for a 7 to 14-day journey may prove more fulfilling.

Here's a quick overview of typical cruise durations:

Another critical aspect to consider is the type of ports on the itinerary. The Caribbean is a mosaic of distinctive islands, each with its own character. Some cruises focus on the more popular, bustling ports, where adventure and nightlife abound. Others steer towards secluded, less frequented destinations where one can truly disconnect and relax. For those seeking an authentic experience, itineraries that include stops at hidden gems, offering insights into local life and untouched natural beauty, would be ideal.

Lastly, the onboard amenities and activities are just as important as the destinations themselves. Travelers should look for cruises that cater specifically to adults, ensuring a tranquil environment. From sophisticated dining options and spa services to workshops and adult-centric entertainment, these cruises offer a variety of pleasures designed to enhance the child-free experience.

When embarking on the journey to select the perfect Caribbean cruise itinerary without children, these factors come together to guide travelers towards a vacation that not only meets but exceeds their expectations. With the right combination of duration, destinations, and onboard experiences, one can ensure a truly memorable and rejuvenating escape amidst the captivating allure of the Caribbean.

Adult-Oriented Activities Onboard

Venturing onto a cruise ship without children unlocks a treasure trove of adult-oriented activities designed to cater to every taste and preference. Whether it’s the thrill of a casino night, the relaxation of a spa day, or the enjoyment of a wine tasting session, these cruises offer an impressive array of options for adult passengers seeking a blend of leisure and excitement.

Exclusive Dining Experiences are a cornerstone of the adult cruise experience. Away from the bustling family areas, adults can relish in tranquility at specialty restaurants offering gourmet cuisine and a serene atmosphere. These dining establishments often feature menus crafted by world-renowned chefs, with dishes that are as exquisite in taste as they are in presentation. Wine pairings and sommelier services enhance the culinary journey, ensuring an unforgettable dining experience.

Spa and Wellness facilities on these cruises are nothing short of spectacular. They offer a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation, with a wide range of services from massages and facials to detox wraps and aromatherapy. For those looking to maintain their fitness regimen or embark on a new wellness journey, state-of-the-art fitness centers and adult-only pools provide the perfect setting. Yoga classes, Pilates sessions, and personal training services are also available to cater to every fitness level.

The Entertainment onboard these vessels caters explicitly to an adult audience. Live music performances, jazz nights, theater productions, and comedy shows provide a rich tapestry of evening entertainment options. Casinos offer a vibrant nightlife scene, with an array of games including slots, blackjack, and roulette, promising a thrilling adventure for those feeling lucky.

Educational Workshops and Lectures provide a unique opportunity for personal growth and learning. From culinary demonstrations and wine tasting classes to photography workshops and historical lectures about the destinations visited, there’s a wealth of knowledge to be gained. These sessions not only offer an enriching experience but also allow guests to take a piece of their journey home in the form of a new skill or insightful information.

With a focus on providing a tranquil yet engaging environment, adult-oriented activities onboard child-free Caribbean cruises ensure that every moment is filled with the potential for relaxation, discovery, and unparalleled enjoyment. The absence of children allows for a quieter, more refined atmosphere, where adults can fully embrace the pleasures and leisure of a well-deserved getaway.

Indulgent Dining Experiences

On child-free Caribbean cruises, dining is more than just a necessity—it's an event in itself. Guests have the luxury of indulging in exclusive dining experiences that cater to a refined palate, offering a serene and sophisticated atmosphere where every meal feels like a special occasion. From gourmet cuisine prepared by world-class chefs to intimate dinner settings under the stars, travelers are in for a treat.

Gourmet Cuisine

The heart of indulgent dining on these cruises lies in the wide array of gourmet cuisine available. Specialty restaurants onboard offer menus that range from fresh seafood delicacies to perfectly cooked steaks and vegan masterpieces. These menus are crafted with the finest ingredients and often include locally sourced items to provide a taste of Caribbean flavors. Diners can expect to find:

  • Freshly caught seafood
  • Locally sourced fruits and vegetables
  • Exotic spices unique to the Caribbean region

Coupled with expert wine pairings, each meal becomes a memorable dining experience.

Themed Dining Nights

To spice things up, many cruises offer themed dining nights that allow passengers to embark on a culinary journey around the world without leaving the ship. Themes might include:

  • Caribbean night, showcasing the vibrant flavors of island dishes
  • Mediterranean evening, with a focus on olive oils, seafood, and fresh produce
  • Asian fusion night, offering a tantalizing mix of flavors from different Asian cuisines

These themed nights often include live music and entertainment, enhancing the dining experience and providing an immersive cultural experience.

Exclusive Atmospheres

What sets child-free cruises apart is the exclusive atmospheres of their dining venues. Restaurants on these ships are designed with tranquility and sophistication in mind, providing the perfect backdrop for intimate dinners and peaceful breakfasts. Some of the unique features include:

  • Outdoor dining areas with panoramic sea views
  • Quiet, adults-only spaces for a more serene dining experience
  • Elegant décor that complements the gourmet offerings

The cruise itineraries are meticulously designed to strike the perfect balance between thrilling adventures and peaceful relaxation. Days at sea are an invitation to explore the myriad of onboard amenities catering exclusively to adult tastes and preferences. From Serenity Adult-Only Retreat Areas to Spa Sanctuaries , each space is crafted to ensure guests find their ideal form of relaxation. The serene adult pools provide a quiet oasis for sunbathing or taking a dip without the splash of children's pool games, while the onboard spas offer a plethora of treatments—from massages to facials, all aimed at inducing deep relaxation.

Shore excursions are no less enticing, carefully selected to showcase the best of the Caribbean's breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural tapestry. Options range from leisurely beach days on pristine, uncrowded beaches to more adventurous activities such as snorkeling in coral reefs teeming with vibrant marine life or exploring historic ruins. These excursions offer a deeper connection with the destinations visited, providing immersive experiences that are both enriching and invigorating.

For those seeking a more personal adventure, the cruises provide ample opportunity for independent exploration. The Caribbean is dotted with enchanting islands, each with its unique charm and treasures waiting to be discovered. Guests can choose to wander through local markets for a taste of Caribbean cuisine, delve into the history of the islands through guided tours, or find a secluded beach to enjoy the serene beauty of the ocean in solitude.

The evenings on board are no less magical, with entertainment options designed to cater to varied tastes. Live music, dance performances, and theme nights offer delightful amusement in an adult-centric setting. The night sky, filled with stars, provides a romantic backdrop for these evenings, whether guests choose to partake in the lively offerings or simply enjoy a tranquil nightcap on deck, watching the sea glide by.

Unwinding in the Caribbean paradise that child-free cruises provide is an experience marked by relaxation, adventure, and the exquisite pleasure of adult-only company. Each moment is an opportunity to indulge in the serene and luxurious atmosphere, truly making the most of this unique vacation experience.

Serenity Now: These Are the Cruise Lines Going Totally Kid-Free

After making its river cruises adults only last month, Viking no longer allows kids on any of its vessels.

As cruise lines create increasingly sophisticated options for families (read: go-kart tracks, extreme waterslides, and kid-focused tours and classes), several new and existing lines are going in the completely opposite direction. They’re instead focusing their efforts on adult passengers by instituting 18-and-over policies.

When Virgin Voyages launches the first of its three cruise ships in 2020—the 2,860-passenger Scarlet Lady —it will require that the kiddos stay ashore by instilling an adults-only policy onboard.

“Let’s face it, even parents could use a holiday from their little ones sometimes; to relax, order a glass of wine and dedicate all of their attention to the voyage at hand . . . sans the unpredictability of kids,” Virgin Voyages wrote in a statement on its site.

When Virgin Voyages launches its “Scarlet Lady” ocean vessel in 2020, no children will be allowed on board.

When Virgin Voyages launches its “Scarlet Lady” ocean vessel in 2020, no children will be allowed on board.

Courtest of Virgin Voyages

Last month, Viking Cruises took a similar stand against kids when its river cruise division introduced a new adults-only policy requiring all passengers booked on river cruises after August 1, 2018, to be at least 18 years of age at the time of sailing, making the entire line, including both river and ocean cruises, bona fide adults only. Previously, Viking’s minimum age on its river cruises had been 12, and Viking’s ocean cruises have had an adults-only policy since launching in 2015.

In truth, Viking hadn’t exactly been known as the river cruise line of choice for families and younger travelers so, according to the company, this was just a matter of making its adults-only reputation official.

“Viking has always offered experiences that are designed for travelers who are 50 and older . . . it’s what we’re known for. Increasingly our guests have told us how much they appreciate an environment where they can travel without children,” stated Viking’s senior vice president of marketing Richard Marnell. “In addition to marketing what Viking is, we believe our guests also appreciate knowing what Viking is not.”

But Viking wasn’t the first river cruise line to go adults only. Earlier this year, U by Uniworld was launched as an adults-only river cruise line with ships that feature rooftop lounge areas and itineraries that include activities such as pub crawls and silent disco parties—amenities for the “young at heart,” according to U by Uniworld, but definitely not for those younger than 18.

Passengers mingle in the lounge on The A, one of the two adult-only river cruise ships operated by U by Uniworld.

The no-kids approach is resonating with what travel experts say has been a growing number of passengers who prefer to travel totally children-free.

“There has been an increase in the demand for adult-only cruises,” said Nancy Yale, president of Virtuoso agency Cruise and World Travel.

Yale pointed out that a good number of passengers are seeking a quieter cruise experience and are more interested in cruise itineraries that offer more time to explore the actual ports, rather than having the focus be on over-the-top onboard amenities.

“Many people are requesting child-free sailings,” confirmed Michael Kempinski of Northstar Luxury Cruise & Travel Planners.

Kempinski said that while there currently aren’t any other ocean cruise lines besides Viking that are truly and totally kid-free (that will change when Virgin Voyages sets sail), there are several upscale and luxury ocean lines that don’t make courting kids a top priority, including Oceania Cruises, Azamara Club Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, and Silversea—lines that often have a note in their kids policy section that they do not provide for the care, entertainment, or supervision of children or that have children’s programs during a very limited time of year, such as summer months or holiday periods. In other words, these are cruise lines where the percentage of kids on board is likely to be much lower than on very family-friendly cruise lines such as Disney and Norwegian Cruise Line.

In an environment where there appears to be more people seeking the serenity of a kids-free cruise, Viking’s move to go fully adults only is not that risky and may be a potential competitive advantage, according to Anthony Adler, president and CEO of Cruise & Resort, Inc.

“It is a point of differentiation from the larger lines that helps it stand out,” said Adler. “Giving potential passengers the knowledge that they will avoid screaming children around them might be the reason they choose Viking over one of its competing lines.”

Discover Adults-Only Cruises for the Ultimate Child-Free Getaway

The ultimate guide to adults-only cruises for a tranquil escape.

For those who’ve endured a vacation where children commandeered the pools, elevators, and every nook and cranny, the appeal of an adults-only cruise is clear. It’s about savoring a peaceful retreat with sophisticated entertainment and activities tailored to adult preferences, whether that means more educational lectures or nightlife that’s more vibrant and mature.

When considering a vacation without the kids, adult travelers might find an adults-only or adults-oriented cruise to be an appealing option. Some cruise lines offer fully adult-only experiences, while others provide adult-focused venues and activities onboard to cater to adult travelers.

Choosing an Adults-Only cruise

The options for cruises that strictly prohibit kids are limited, but there are select cruise lines dedicated to ensuring your voyage is child-free. This guide shines a spotlight on the best adults-only cruises , where the vibe is unquestionably grown-up.

We’ve also included information on cruise lines that make an effort to have exclusive adult areas where it’s possible to enjoy a nearly child-free experience.

Adult Only Cruise Lines include:

  • Virgin Voyages
  • P&O (select ships)

Planning an Adult Cruise – Tips and Insights

  • Consider the length and destination of the cruise; longer trips outside of school vacation periods generally mean fewer children.
  • Upscale cruise lines tend to attract an older demographic, leading to a more adult-oriented atmosphere with few or no kids onboard
  • Research charter and lifestyle cruises for adult options
  • Consider unique itineraries that may not cater to young families such as Transatlantic crossings and repositioning cruises.
  • Check the cruise line’s policy on age restrictions before booking.

Top Adults-Only Cruise Lines

Virgin voyages: nearly all-inclusive adult-only cruises & a new wave of adult sophistication & entertainment ..

Virgin Group’s introduction to the cruising world, Virgin Voyages, is designed for the 18+ crowd. With a mission to craft a modern and sophisticated experience, Virgin Voyages offers ships like the Scarlet Lady , along with its sister ships Valiant Lady , Resilient Lady, and soon the Brilliant Lady, that cater to adults seeking a slice of high-energy fun and modern indulgence.

  • Read : Everything to know about Virgin Voyages before you go!

The contemporary aesthetic and modern amenities set the stage for an unforgettable cruise – free from splashing children! Virgin Voyages is celebrated for its dynamic nightlife and entertainment, offering an alternative to traditional cruise shows with edgy, festival-like performances. Highlights include the Scarlet Night, a dazzling dance party, and the PJ Party, where guests can groove the night away in cozy pajamas.

These ships also include unique attractions like drag performances, tattoo parlors, and private karaoke rooms, but purposefully lack family-centric amenities such as waterslides and splash zones.

Virgin Voyages really has carved out a unique niche making adults-only cruises both fun and affordable when considering other adult options.

With a minimum age requirement of 18, every aspect of their ships is designed with adult enjoyment in mind.

I think Virgin Voyages is the best adult-only cruise line because of the all-inclusive rates, diversity, and great food!

Virgin Caters to : Young & Young at heart (minimum age 18) Destinations : Caribbean (with stops at their private port in Bimini); Europe; South Pacific; Transatlantic Amenities : All dining venues included; complimentary fitness classes; free Wi-Fi; included tips; extensive nightlife and entertainment options, all free of charge

Virgin Voyages - All Adult Cruises

Viking: A Haven of enrichment for mature, well-heeled travelers

Viking has long been synonymous with adult-only cruising. Since its ocean division’s launch in 2015, Viking has consistently maintained an all-adult policy. Its river cruises have also followed suit, appealing to travelers who crave intellectual stimulation and cultural immersion.

Targeted at a bit older demographic, Viking offers a refined cruising experience with an emphasis on enrichment through onboard lectures, history- and culture-focused excursions, and classic entertainment like string quartets. Don’t let the target demographic concern you, however. Cruisers in their 20s, 30s, and beyond will enjoy a laid-back experience, sans kids.

Viking Ocean Cruises welcomes travelers 18 and older aboard luxurious ships with destination-focused itineraries around the world, offering comfortable accommodations and special access to curated experiences.

Viking Caters to: Couples 40+ Destinations : Europe; Caribbean; Asia; Australia; Antarctica; Arctic; world voyages Amenities : Industry-leading Nordic Spa, free for all guests; beer and wine at lunch and dinner; all dining options complimentary; included tour in each port; free Wi-Fi; amazing Scandinavian design

P&O Cruises: A uniquely British experience at sea

P&O Cruises offers a dual approach with some ships catering to families while others are exclusively for adults. The Arcadia and Aurora are their adult-only vessels, promising a distinctly British experience complete with afternoon teas, traditional deck games, and British culinary delights by renowned chefs like Marco Pierre White.

While P&O has listened to the market and offering adult-only experiences, it’s not the higher end quality you may get from the other all-adult cruise lines previously mentioned.

Saga Cruises: Exclusivity for the Experienced

Saga Cruises sets itself apart by setting its minimum age at 50 years old. This British line focuses on creating an environment suited to baby boomers and beyond, offering ocean and river cruises that depart solely from the UK for those seeking a mature and refined travel experience.

Saga Caters to : Mature cruisers (Minimum age of 50) Destinations : Baltics; British Isles; Canaries; Norway; Iceland/Greenland; Caribbean; Americas Amenities : All balcony cabins; included thermal suite; included gratuities; free Wi-Fi; all meals and drinks, including premium spirits; travel insurance; private chauffeur transfers (within the UK)

Hapag-Lloyd (Hanseatic Spirit) : Expeditions for adults only

The “Hanseatic Spirit” is an expedition ship that emphasizes features that enable unique itineraries and activities, like zodiacs for shore landings, specialized equipment for exploring remote areas, and onboard experts like authors and historians. These aspects cater to clients looking for educational and immersive experiences. The Spirit is also adults-only by design and is the first all-adult cruise ship in the Hapag-Lloyd pleasure cruise fleet.

A little know British cruise brand: Ambassador Cruise Line

This brand is known for affordable cruises with itineraries as basic as 3-day British Isles tours to 76-day Brazil, Australia, and Africa itineraries. Ambassador Cruise Lines specifically states that all passengers must be 18+ at the time of boarding. I’ve never known anyone to try Ambassador, but we’re considering it so we better understand the brand!

Adult-focused cruising options, where Adults-Only Is by Happenstance

Beyond the dedicated adult-only lines, several other cruise brands offer a mature atmosphere by virtue of their upscale nature, longer itineraries, price points, and fewer young passengers. Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Azamara, Silversea Cruises, Oceana, Seabourn, and Windstar Cruises are examples where the clientele skews a little older with ships that aren’t built with amenities that cater to children.

The cruises not only feel more adult only because of their demographic, but they simply lack kid-focused activities making it downright boring for parents to bring their children. For that reason, these cruise lines end up being mostly (and often all) adults by default.

Additionally, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours suggests against bringing children under 12 except during holiday voyages. Remember that longer cruises to exotic locations during school months will also likely feature fewer children on board.

A “near adult” experience is Azamara Cruises

Azamara invites a more sophisticated traveler to enjoy an intimate cruising environment, however, without specific age restrictions. This cruise line distinguishes itself by calling on smaller ports, offering longer stays, and providing more opportunities for overnight exploration. Azamara’s approach enhances the immersion into local cultures and maximizes destination engagement. With a wealth of shore excursions and sumptuous onboard amenities, Azamara masterfully blends discovery with relaxation. There are rarely children on these cruises. However, during school holidays, there are maybe a couple of families onboard.

Oceana Cruises: Another amazing almost all-adult cruise experience

For those who appreciate the finer things in life, Oceania Cruises welcomes adults with its sophisticated offerings and elegant atmosphere. While not exclusively adults-only, Oceania’s amenities and itineraries are tailored to the tastes of discerning adult travelers. Known as The Finest Cuisine at Sea®, Oceania’s culinary program features dishes crafted by master chefs to satisfy gourmet appetites. Engage in enriching onboard activities, surrender to blissful spa treatments, and partake in cultural shore excursions for an enriching and luxurious cruise experience.

For a classic cruise with few or no kids, look at Cunard

Cunard and the most well-known Ocean Liner, Queen Mary 2, are often child-free. The nature of the cruises, being transatlantic doesn’t cater to families or kids. The cruise line doesn’t prohibit children or even discourage kids, but the reality is that there are usually none or very few.

I’ve done many transatlantic crossings on the Queen Mary 2 and have only seen one or two kids on the ships. For all intents and purposes, Cunard with their itineraries and more formal environment doesn’t cater to younger passengers.

For what it’s worth, the few times I have been on a Cunard ship where children have been present, they’ve always been very well-behaved and well-mannered! That can’t be said for many cruise experiences that cater to families! 🙂

Cunard Adult Cruise

Consider a river cruise for an adult-only cruise vacation

River cruises tend to cater to adults and have few, if any child-friendly activities. Because of their long, specialized itineraries, River cruises rarely have children.

Charters like LGBT cruises & Themed Cruises will be for adults

Charter groups that book entire trips for a theme are often designed for adults only including groups like Atlantis Events for LGBT+ or Bliss lifestyle cruises for swingers . There are charters of all types from music-based to adult-themed, there’s something for everyone!

When an all-adult cruise isn’t an option, but you want some peace and adult quiet Onboard

There may be a circumstance when an adult-only cruise isn’t an option. Most major cruise lines have started listening to passengers who want to remove themselves from spaces where kids may be gathering in abundance.

Norwegian Cruise Line Posh, Vibe & Spice H20

NCL has created adult-only areas across much of its fleet and is adding spaces to older ships during refits.

Adult spaces include Posh Beach Club and Spice H20 on the Norwegian Epic or Vibe and Spice H20 aboard the Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, and Norwegian Bliss.

Spice H20 offers an adults-only lounge space, positioned on Deck 15 of the Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Breakaway, and Norwegian Getaway, and on Deck 17 of the Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss. By day, it’s a peaceful haven featuring hot tubs, loungers, and a calming waterfall. However, come nightfall, the area transforms into a lively, open-air nightclub.

The exclusive Posh Beach Club on Norwegian Epic is accessible via a private glass elevator. This Mediterranean-inspired zone boasts plush daybeds, a fully stocked bar, refreshing water spritzers, cool towels, and delicious fruit skewers.

On the Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, and Norwegian Bliss, you’ll find the Vibe Beach Club. This spot echoes the offerings of Posh with stunning sea views, a large hot tub, and comfortable chaise loungers, ensuring a luxurious experience akin to that at Posh, complete with similar amenities.

TIP : These adult spaces are normally offered at a daily charge and have limited space available. On popular itineraries, especially in the Caribbean, these passes sell fast. Expect to pay $300 for the use of Vibe or Posh for a week.

Perks for Adults on NCL : Choice sun decks for the over-18 crowd; studio cabins for solo cruisers; Haven complex provides secluded spaces; large fitness centers (must be 16+); casinos (must be 18+); late-night entertainment like Howl at the Moon piano bar plus cocktail lounges and wine bars aplenty

Destinations : Alaska; Bahamas; Caribbean; Europe; Canada/New England; Hawaii; South Pacific Amenities : Shows straight from Broadway and West End included in the fare; adult-focused restaurants including Onda by Scarpetta and Le Bistro; deck parties; waterfront dining on select ships

Celebrity Cruises Solarium

widely recognized as a family-friendly option, curates exclusive spaces for adults seeking solitude on the sea. The Solarium is a peaceful oasis within the ship featuring pools, loungers, and a bar dedicated to tranquility. The Retreat space is another option. While it’s not only for adults, by its nature with upscale suites, it’s not typical to see many, if any, children in the Retreat area.

While children are welcome on Celebrity Cruises , their in-room babysitting services and youth programs ensure that adults can enjoy moments of undisturbed calm.

Princess Cruises “Sanctuary”

The Sanctuary on Princess Cruises strikes a balance between family-inclusive features and adult-oriented spaces. The Sanctuary is an adult-exclusive outdoor retreat offering plush loungers and private cabanas serviced with attentive care. For families cruising with children, Princess provides group babysitting at Camp Discovery for younger kids and a Teen Lounge for adolescents that remains open in port.

Access to The Sanctuary incurs an additional charge. Guests have the option of selecting half-day or full-day passes. While there is a small fee for using personal Evian misters, complimentary spritzes are provided intermittently throughout the day by the Sanctuary stewards. Beverages from The Sanctuary’s menu are available for an extra charge, typically lower than prices at the ship’s other bars. Snacks are complimentary, but a modest fee is applied for food delivery services.

Royal Caribbean Solarium

The Solarium experience differs across ships. Adults can find solace in areas designated as minors-free, such as certain pools, spas, and evening venues.

Generally, guests enjoy free access to comfortable padded loungers, hot tubs, and wading pools, all set in a tranquil environment reserved for those 16 years and older. Conveniently situated within the Solarium is a bar and dining area, allowing you to relax in this serene oasis without having to step away for meals. The Solarium Bistro, featuring complimentary breakfast, lunch, and dinner, delights with a Mediterranean touch.

On the Symphony of the Seas, you’ll be captivated by the “Big Wonder” art installation. This impressive piece enhances the Solarium with its unique blend of ambient sound and lighting, contributing to a truly mesmerizing experience.

Carnival Cruise Line Serenity Retreat

Carnival is generally a budget-friendly choice that ensures enjoyment for all family members. While children engage in age-specific activities through Carnival’s youth programs, adults can head to the Serenity Retreat—an over-21 sanctuary where hammocks sway and an exclusive bar awaits. A daily fee may be charged depending on the ship.

Virgin Voyages says no kids on the ocean. And the kids aren’t pleased.

Richard Branson launched Virgin Voyages to create an adults only cruise experience at sea — a place where adults, including moms and dads, could set out on the open ocean unanchored from all the responsibilities back at home. You know, like waking up at 5 am because both of your children had something extremely important to tell you (the twist? It wasn’t important).

What no one, including Richard, could see coming? The backlash from the kids. The sugar-induced uproar of the children who can’t come on board. And even the petitions ( which Richard can tell you all about in his blog ).

Have a look below and see exactly how the kids feel about us being exclusively adult.

Looking for the ultimate adults only vacation, without kids—your own or anyone else's? Book your next cruise vacation on Virgin Voyages.

No kidding: These 12 cruises are the perfect multigenerational family vacation option

The launch of Disney Cruise Line in 1998 was a game changer for family cruises. Now in its third decade of operation, Disney Cruise Line consistently tops the list of best cruise lines for families. And its newest ship (for now), Disney Wish , is unquestionably one of the best cruise ships for kids ever made. But Disney isn't the only major player in the family cruising space.

A host of other cruise lines, including Carnival Cruises , Princess , Norwegian , MSC , and Royal Caribbean , have helped usher in a new era of family vacations on cruise ships with amenities like kids clubs, water parks, stage shows, theatrical dining experiences, reduced fares for young children, and even kids sail free deals . And because the best cruise ships for kids are also great for grownups , you have plenty of options when it comes to the best family cruises.

NO HIDDEN FEES: 7 best all-inclusive cruise lines in the world

1. Disney Wish

Disney Cruise Line

The sheer volume of onboard entertainment options for families on Disney Cruise Line's newest ship, Disney Wish , takes things to a whole new level. From action-packed dinner-and-a-show experiences like Worlds of Marvel and Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure to the Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge , and Incredibles-themed inflatable obstacle course , you'll never run out of things to do.

BIG SAVINGS: Kids sail free: 7 cruise lines with kids cruise free deals this year

Sailings on the Disney Wish also include a stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay , which is always a highlight of any family cruise. Castaway Cay’s family beach is a great place for swimming, and you can rent bikes, kayaks, and snorkeling gear to see colorful tropical fish and perhaps even a sea turtle munching on seagrass.

2. Disney Magic

While every ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet has a claim to be among the best family cruises, the original DCL family cruise ship deserves a special mention: Disney Magic is the ship that launched Disney Cruise Line in 1998, and with DCL's constant improvements and upkeep, the ship doesn’t feel outdated at all. Pirates, princesses, superheroes, and a thrilling water slide with a three-story drop are just a few of the fun features that make this a kid-favorite ship on one of the best cruise lines for families. In 2013, Disney added the AquaDunk high-speed thrill slide and Marvel Avengers Academy kids club. In 2018, a Tangled dinner theater restaurant made its debut.

WATER WORLDS: 50 best cruise ship water parks for kids and tweens

As one of the smaller ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, Disney Magic can be a less overwhelming experience for younger kids and first-time cruisers, especially given the trend among family cruises to be bigger and louder with every new ship. (The fabulous Disney Wonder is similarly sized.) But there's more than one reason to consider a Disney Magic voyage in 2024. This year, the ship will be the first to sail to Disney Cruise Line’s newest private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , in the Bahamas.

3. Disney Treasure

Making its debut in December 2024, Disney Cruise Line's sixth ship will be called Disney Treasure and it will be the ship for fans of the Disney theme parks. Venues inspired by classic attractions such as the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are among the highlights to look forward to when the ship sets sail. The sister ship of Disney Wish will also have a high-tech Worlds of Marvel dinner show and a theater-in-the-round dining experience, this time themed to Pixar’s Coco.

CAPTAIN MICKEY: 7 best Disney cruises for families in 2024

Disney Treasure will also feature a brand-new original Broadway-style production called "Disney The Tale of Moana" in the Walt Disney Theatre. Other shows performed on board will include "Beauty and the Beast" and "Disney Seas the Adventure." Best of all, Disney Treasure will sail seven-night itineraries to both the Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean. That means you can enjoy two distinct dinner shows in the Worlds of Marvel and Plaza de Coco restaurants, and all of the Broadway-style shows on stage during one family cruise.

4. Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean

A brand-new class of ship is heading to North America in 2024, and it starts with Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas in January. Among the many firsts for Icon of the Seas is the AquaDome, the largest glass and steel structure on any cruise ship, seven pools, six record-breaking waterslides, eight separate neighborhoods, 40 ways to drink and dine, four stages, and a three-level ultimate family townhouse. The innovative AquaDome is a peaceful oasis during the day and a vibrant hotspot at night with a 55-foot-tall water curtain and AquaTheater that debuts performances with divers, skateboarders, and robots.

FAMILY CRUISES: 5 best cruise ships to entertain your teen

Thrill-seekers will love Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea with six waterslides. There's also the Crown’s Edge, which is part skywalk, part ropes course, and 100 percent thrill ride where you can dangle 154 feet above the ocean. And, of course, you'll also find the Royal Caribbean staple FlowRider surf simulator and the Lost Dunes mini golf course. Those looking to take it easy should head to Chill Island, which features four pools spread over three decks with sweeping ocean views.

Fans of Royal Caribbean will enjoy the Royal Promenade with 15 restaurants, bars, and lounges; Central Park's open-air neighborhood filled with live plants and trees; and Surfside, the first neighborhood designed specifically for young families. The ship's seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean family cruises all stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay , the line’s award-winning private island. Families will find an array of activities on Perfect Day at CocoCay, such as its beaches and freshwater pool (included) and an expansive water park and zip line (available for an extra charge).

5. Wonder of the Seas

Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships debuted in early 2022 and instantly ignited buzz that they might be the most kid-friendly cruise ships in the entire world. At 1,188 feet long and 18 decks tall, there's plenty of room for families to spread out and find entertainment onboard the Wonder of the Seas . Two dedicated private teen spaces onboard make vacationing with teenagers a little easier. In fact, teens aged 16 and up can even enjoy a massive teens-only hot tub that literally protrudes over the edge of the ship on Wonder of the Seas' deck 15.

SCENIC VOYAGES: Everything you need to know about river cruises in the USA

Grade school kids and even the littlest ones have it pretty great, too. For big kids, there’s an enormous multiple-deck play area called Wonder Playscape . For the youngest passengers, there's the Adventure Ocean play area full of soft toys and games for toddlers. And a playground with climbing equipment gives them a space to work off their energy. Wonder of the Seas also has the most amazing family suites around. They come complete with two levels of space, an in-suite slide, table tennis, and plenty of room for the whole family.

6. Oasis of the Seas

When it launched in 2009, Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas was the largest ship in the world, accommodating more than 5,500 passengers per voyage and cementing the line's place among the best cruise lines for families. After a reimagining 10 years later, Oasis of the Seas is still a popular option for family cruises in 2024 with its Caribbean-inspired pool deck, rock climbing walls, and Perfect Storm trio of multistory waterslides. Among the many reasons that make Royal Caribbean one of the best cruise lines for families is that its Symphony of the Seas builds upon the strengths of the line’s other Oasis Class ships.

7. Norwegian Viva

Norwegian Cruise Line

What makes Norwegian one of the best cruise lines for families? For one thing, you’ll never hear "I’m bored" from kids. And with its three-story race track, two escape rooms, The Rush and The Drop dry slides, The Wave waterslide, immersive virtual reality games, Topgolf simulator, mini golf, waterpark, splash ground, and kids’ clubs, your family’s biggest problem on the Norwegian Viva might just be deciding how to balance all the activities with quiet relaxation.

GO ALL IN: These 6 cruise lines offer the best themed cruises

The Norwegian Viva arrived in North America in December 2023 and offers Caribbean cruises from San Juan, Puerto Rico, in early 2024 before heading to Europe through November. The ship's Observation Lounge has panoramic 180-degree views to soak in the scenery or take Insta-worthy photos on Oceanwalk’s glass walkway. After playing the day away in port or on the ship, your family can enjoy dinner followed by a live performance of Beetlejuice: The Musical, based on the cult-classic Tim Burton film.

8. Carnival Panorama

Carnival Cruise Line

One of Carnival Cruise Line ’s newer ships, the Carnival Panorama 's many kid-friendly features have already made it one of the best cruises for families. The Panorama has supervised kids programs in three different age categories, a massive aqua park, the popular SkyRide aerial attraction, SkyCourse ropes course, and the first SkyZone trampoline park at sea.

DON'T OVERPAY: How to save money on a Carnival Cruise (with or without kids)

In addition, Carnival's exclusive partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises provides "Seuss at Sea" experiences on family cruise vacations, such as Dr. Seuss Bookville, Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, and the Seuss-a-palooza Parade. Based in Los Angeles, Carnival Panorama sails week-long round-trip cruises to the Mexican Riviera in 2024.

9. Caribbean Princess

Princess Cruises

Made famous by the classic '80s TV series "The Love Boat," Princess Cruises now hosts more than two million passengers each year. Kid-friendly Caribbean Princess underwent an extensive renovation in 2017 that boosted its family offerings to include Camp Discovery Youth and Teen Center, HD Movies Under the Stars, and the Reef Family Splash Zone (the line's first splash zone at sea).

MOVIES UNDER THE STARS: 11 best outdoor movie screens for your backyard staycation

Caribbean Princess will be 20 years old in 2024, but another extensive drydock refurbishment in 2022 has kept the ship from feeling dated. Other features that earn the Caribbean Princess a spot on my list of best family cruises include its partnership with Discovery Inc. for "Discovery at SEA" activities, which feature Animal Planet and Discovery Channel programming, the Stanley the Bear experience, and JrChef@Sea cooking classes. In summer 2024, Caribbean Princess heads to Southampton for a series of European cruises before heading back to Florida.

10. MSC Meraviglia

Unless you're a hardcore cruise family, MSC Cruises might be the largest cruise line you’ve never heard of. One of the leading cruise lines in Europe, South America, and other parts of the world, MSC is working hard to get a foothold in North America by offering great deals on family cruises. These include kids ages 18 and under sailing free on select departures , and young children ages two and under always sailing free.

FIRST-TIMERS: 19 things to know before your first cruise with kids

Family-friendly MSC Meraviglia launched in 2017 and it features seven different kids’ clubs for children from babies to age 17. Teens have their own space with a cinema, game room, and live stage. And Meraviglia’s Polar Aquapark has three different waterslides, including a high-speed “champagne flute,” that easily make it one of the best cruises for families. Families can play together in the vast entertainment area that includes an MSC Formula One Racing Simulator, a full-sized bowling alley with two lanes, an interactive XD cinema, a flight simulator, and a video games arcade. There’s also a Sportsplex facility for basketball, tennis, squash, volleyball, pickleball, mini golf, and five-a-side soccer.

11. MSC Seascape

MSC Cruises

The U.S. flagship of the MSC Cruises brand, MSC Seascape was designed with families in mind and offers plenty of options for onboard entertainment. The cruise line's partnership with LEGO includes a DUPLO room for children ages three to six and a second LEGO room for kids ages seven to 11 with the opportunity to earn a LEGO Master Builder certificate. Teens have three different themed areas to engage with their peers.

BRING THE LITTLE ONES: 10 toddler-friendly vacations that are just as much fun for parents

You have to check out Robotron on these family cruises. Robotron is a robotic arm ride that sends you 173 feet above the sea, giving you a unique 360-degree view as you're moved in different directions and flipped upside down. At night, Robotron offers a personalized DJ experience where you can curate your musical journey with colors and music preferences.

MSC Seascape sails from Miami on the Bahamas and Caribbean family cruises, including a visit to MSC Cruises' private Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Ocean Cay features two miles of white sand beaches and a variety of family-friendly activities such as snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and swimming. Some family cruises dock overnight at Ocean Cay, allowing you to watch the spectacular Lighthouse light show.

12. Celebrity Equinox

Celebrity Cruises

An upscale cruise line with prices to match, Celebrity Cruises appeals to families with older children or multigenerational groups looking for luxurious family cruises. Celebrity Equinox is not the newest ship in the line (its inaugural sailing was in 2009), but this kid-friendly cruise ship received an extensive overhaul as part of the "Celebrity Revolution" in 2019 and continues to impress with its family cruises in 2024.

COUPLES CRUISES: 7 best cruise lines for couples (and their most romantic voyages)

Celebrity's Camp at Sea kids' program offers a diverse and constantly changing series of activities so that it’s "never the same camp twice." And Celebrity Equinox partners with Miami’s Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science to offer STEM programming on topics such as the importance of plankton to the Earth’s oceans. Other kid-friendly activities on Celebrity’s family cruises include hot glass blowing classes and demonstrations, as well as lawn games such as croquet and bocce on the real grass of the Lawn Club.
