What to Consider

Travel systems look trickier than they actually are. I’ve spent countless hours testing the stroller/car seat combos, and I can tell you they’re all pretty darn easy to figure out. It’s mostly about what you need as a parent and what you expect as a consumer.

I understand that the first thing you’re going to notice is the price tag (it’s hard not to!). And holy cow, these can be a big investment. But there are good travel systems at a variety of price points, from just a couple hundred dollars to upwards of $1,500. There will be significant differences in durability, and the materials in the lower-end models won’t be as luxurious or, honestly, aesthetic, but that doesn’t mean that less expensive models aren’t great, because every travel system on this list is the best of its type.

Other things you want to think about when buying a travel system are how you're using it, how much it weighs, the height and weight limits of the stroller and the car seat, and how the whole thing cleans up (kids can be messy — we get it).

How You’re Using It

If this is a system that’s going to be taken up and down stairs a lot, if you need it to store in a small space, or even if you just happen to have a bad back, you’ll want to look for a travel system on the lighter side.

Now, there’s no such thing as a “light” travel system. Car seats typically weigh over 10 pounds, the stroller itself can be 20+ pounds, and then you add a baby? It’s a lot — but there are more compact models on this list if you’re aiming to keep things light.

I've also included a jogging stroller on this list. As a runner, I know how hard it can be to hit the pavement as a new parent, and the right travel system can help in this area. While you won't be doing any running with your newborn, getting a jogging stroller travel system means that you don't have to buy another stroller when the time comes. Plus, with the adjustable lock-or-swivel front wheel, there's no reason this can't be your everyday stroller.

Not sure if you're going to have a second baby, or when? The Baby Jogger City Select 2 gives you options. Much like the UppaBaby Vista 2 (below), it's a single-to-double, but it's about 20% smaller when it's folded, which parents love, and it's $700 cheaper, which is also pretty important. Honestly, though? With the exception of some of the finishing, they are extremely similar strollers. The ride is smooth as silk, taking curves, ruts, bumps, and uneven surfaces like the boardwalk and cobblestone streets without becoming unwieldy.

The folding bit is downright impressive. While it's not a one-handed fold, it is an easy fold. It's also the most compact fold for a single-to-double that I've seen or tested. It doesn't scrimp on the size of the seat, which is comparable to the UppaBaby, nor the size of storage, which beats the competition.

And let's take a minute to discuss the car seat. It's spectacular. It has an anti-rebound bar that redistributes the impact of collisions. The RapidLock belt-tensioning base is easy to operate and stash, and the side-impact protection on the seat is tested to the highest standards. Installation isn't hard to accomplish, and once it's in? It feels secure and steady.

Graco FastAction SE Travel System

The Graco SnugRide car seat is hands-down the most well-known infant car seat in the United States. It's the car seat I used for my oldest, I am constantly putting it on car seat lists , and it's the car seat millions of parents choose every year. It's reliable, durable, affordable, and easy to install. It has an easy leveler, multiple positions of recline, and one of the easiest harnesses on the market. It's also the car seat included in this travel system.

The stroller is a kids' dream, too. It has an oversized canopy, a fold-flat seat, a gigantic snack and drink tray, and a huge cargo compartment. Graco definitely has parents in mind with its own tray and cup holder (we could all use snacks), quick fold, one-handed close, durable wheels that make maneuverability easy, and machine-washable fabrics, all for under $250.

UppaBaby Vista V2 Stroller + Mesa Infant Car Seat Travel System

Yes, this travel system is expensive — but you're getting the top-of-the-line car seat, stroller, and bassinet. It's a single-to-double stroller, with multiple configurations ranging from one car seat on the stroller to two car seats, to a bassinet and a jump seat, and more.

Almost all of it is machine-washable, it's durable enough to last through multiple children, and it performs smoothly. The wheels glide over any surface you throw at it — including sand, with the dual suspension making the whole thing such a smooth ride that babies snooze right over bumps in the terrain. The seat itself reclines almost fully flat if needed, so when your tot is a toddler, they can get in a good snooze.

One thing you might not have thought about is car seat installation — and, trust me, this one is one of the easiest out there. I have latched and unlatched the base, and taken the car seat on and off multiple times, and I never even so much as chipped my pricey manicure (which we all know is a big feat for a mama!).

I personally love this stroller and this car seat. My nephews have been using it for over a year, and my sister-in-law and brother rave about its durability, ease, steering, style, and general quality. My sister-in-law never had a problem maneuvering it, and let me tell you, my youngest nephew is a delightfully beefy fellow. However, again, this is a spend, and in this economy? It's asking a lot.

BOB Gear Revolution 3.0 Travel System

This made-in-the-USA travel system is a high-quality option for new parents who want to keep their baby safe while jogging or taking a nice stroll. Britax is known for its car seats that surpass general safety standards, and the baby gear brand offers a stroller that'll fit one of its most popular car seat models (B Safe 35) perfectly.

Britax car seats incorporate safe cell impact protection, which is a hex-shaped technology designed to absorb extra energy and protect your baby beyond federal standards in the case of a serious crash. It also features a deep foam-lined shell. We love that Britax paired it with the BOB Revolution Flex because it offers storage, a protective canopy to face the elements, a fast one-hand fold, and a lightweight frame. All in all, it has an easy ride with multiple reclining positions.

The advanced suspension system and air-filled tires, along with the adjustable handlebar make this the obvious choice for parents looking for an active lifestyle with their tot. The whole stroller glides easily but with enough heft that you don't feel like it will get away from you. Personally, I love the feel of this jogger as I push it — it’s stable while remaining light and nimble. It takes the ruts and divots of roads and the boardwalk with ease. I do wish that the brakes were a bit more intuitive, but they're not difficult, just a bit ungainly.

Chicco Mini Bravo Plus Travel System

The lightweight stroller included in this travel system features a one-hand fold and auto-positioning wheels for ease of use. Setting the system up is easy, and safe car seat installation is straightforward and simple. The car seat isn’t bulky, so it’s easy to carry and transfer from the car to the stroller. Plus, it clicks right into the stroller within seconds. The stroller features sturdy, agile wheels so that even on rougher terrain, your baby should experience a smooth ride.

It's light and easy to use — and while Chicco may be a more affordable system, they don't skimp on materials, and that's obvious when you consider that the KeyFit car seat is often the top-selling car seat of any brand. It's also one of my favorite infant car seats, period. It's easy to install, lightweight, wipes clean quickly, and buying extra bases is affordable and simple.

Maxi-Cosi Zelia Luxe 5-in-1 Modular Travel System

Best Lightweight

Maxi-Cosi's wonderful Zelia stroller and Mico XP car seat were designed with a real eye toward aesthetics. This stroller comes in several beautiful colorways with leather accents, brushed black aluminum hardware, and clean lines.

The mechanics of the travel system is on par with the looks. The car seat is a wonder with air protect side impact protection, wool-free fire retardant, chemical-free fabrics, an easy-to-thread harness, and leveling indicators that make installation simple. It's also one of the easiest strollers to learn how to fold, which is saying a lot — I'm not kidding. Generally, it takes me anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to learn a new fold, and I'm an expert. I read the Maxi Cosi manual once, and I got it.

The stroller has rugged wheels that will never puncture but still glide over the pavement. The multiple recline seat with a deep canopy makes for the perfect place for your kid to relax in the afternoon. The seat itself can face the parent or the outside world depending on your baby's preference as well. All of the fabrics are machine-washable, and parents love that even after tons of washes, the fabrics' colors don't fade.

It’s essentially a frame on wheels that can function as a stroller with the car seat but fold up to an especially light and compact size when you transfer to a car. You can also find travel systems that bundle infant car seats with full-fledged strollers, where the car seat can clip into both the stroller and the car, though these are a little bulkier for travel.

For children older than 6 months, including toddlers, you have a wider range of stroller options. You’ll of course want something lightweight and fairly compact (at least when folded). You’ll also need a car seat if you’re going to be in a car, though car seats for toddlers don’t typically attach to strollers. Newborns start off in a lie-flat carrycot that resembles a moses basket on wheels. It’s often well-padded, with high sides and a sun canopy. They’ll be there for the first six months (or until they can sit up unaided).

Travel systems allow car seats to clip on and off the stroller for easy transition from car to stroller. Some will be able to clip straight onto the frame, while others will require car seat adapters.

Toddler seat

Once your baby is six months old (or can sit up unaided), they can leave the carrycot and move into the toddler seat. These are upright seats with a recline function, allowing you to lean them back for a snooze. I knew what a foot muff was, but sitting down to try and explain it was an interesting experience. It’s like a large sock that attaches to the stroller to cover the bottom half of your child. They’re usually used to keep baby warm, and so are padded or sometimes quilted. However, there are some temperature regulating ones that can also be used to keep baby cool. 

Wheels and suspension

Unlike jogging strollers , travel systems don’t have a specialist use and are usually more ‘basic’ when it comes to wheels and suspension systems. 

The vast majority of travel system strollers will have four wheels (or four sets of dual wheels) with standard hard rubber tyres. You might find some with air-inflated tyres but these are less common on travel systems. 

Because they’re not as likely to be used on bumpy terrains than jogging strollers, travel systems are less likely to come with suspension systems. However, some of the more expensive strollers on the market do have them.

Like all strollers, travel systems have a parking brake usually operated by the foot near the back wheels. Because you’re unlikely to be jogging or running with them, there’s no need for a deceleration brake. But brands will occasionally put the parking brake on the handlebar.

Adjustable handlebars

Like any stroller, travel systems will either have two separate handles or one, arching, connected handlebar. 

Safety harness

Because travel systems have three different seating positions (carrycot, car seat and toddler seat), there are three different safety harnesses involved. 

A carrycot has a three point safety harness, usually with two straps across the hips and one between the legs. These are sometimes connected via clips, however, some opt for velcro straps because they are used for newborns. 

A car seat will also have a three-point harness. This time they’ll be two straps over the shoulders and one between the legs, and a clip buckle system. 

The toddler seat needs to have a five-point harness because toddlers are bigger and able to start wriggling out of things. So, there will be two shoulder straps, two across the hips and the one between the legs.

It doesn’t come with a separate carrycot - instead the toddler seat can fully recline to a lie-flat position for newborns, meaning less bulky stuff for you to store. Each seating position can be rear and forward-facing (although we’re not sure why you’d want a forward-facing car seat position) for maximum flexibility. The SafeMax car seat has been tested to twice the required level of US federal safety standards, and it also comes with an ‘anti-rebound bar’ ISOFIX base, adding even more value for your money.

Unlike most everyday travel system strollers, it has three wheels but that doesn’t make it a brilliant off-roader despite the suspension. 

It does have a lower weight limit than most of alternatives, and does look quite cheap in comparison to its budget rivals.

Like the Evenflo Pivot Modular and Hauck Pacific 3, it also has a carrycot-toddler seat conversion function, offering eight different seating positions - the carrycot, car seat, toddler seat, and ‘travel system’ (which Safety 1st describes as having the car seat attached while the carrycot/toddler seat is collapse at an angle), all forward and rear-facing. It also comes with an ISOFIX base.

Things to consider when buying a travel system

Travel systems are often used on a daily basis by parents, so they need to be suitable for as much of your life as possible, so you need to think about what you need it for most - is it small enough to fit into your car boot? Is it light enough to lift on and off public transport? Do you live on a small street where cars are usually parked on the pavement? Do you like going shopping and need something to easily weave around the shelves and rails?

Many brands will bundle their travel systems together into one, single price. However, not all brands will make strollers and car seats. In that case, they’re usually made to be compatible with a certain brand of car seat or come with universal car seat adapters. 

Naturally, the bundles are usually cheaper than buying each component separately. However, if you’re buying a stroller that doesn’t have its own car seat, and has universal adapters, you may be able to find a cheaper deal by shopping around.

We all know that budget is a huge factor for a lot of parents when it comes to purchasing decisions. And like most things, there are travel systems priced to meet almost every budget. 

The cheapest travel systems tend to start at around £250 ($310), while the most premium options can cost more than £1,000 ($1,250).

Size and weight

Basic prams used to be notorious for being large and cumbersome, and that didn’t change in the early years of travel systems. The need to transform from carrycot to toddler seat, and hold a separate car seat, initially meant travel systems were also large and heavy. 

However, innovations in design and materials used mean that many travel systems are lightweight yet sturdy enough to offer the required protection and safety for your baby.

More than one child? 

There are double travel systems on the market, although they’re naturally bigger and heavier. Some options are designed specifically for twins, while others allow a great degree of flexibility if you have two children a year or two apart in age. 

How much does a travel system cost?

Like most products, there are options to suit every budget. The cheaper end of the market costs in the region of £200 - 350 ($250 - 430). Mid-range travel systems tend to cost £350-600 ($430 - 745), while the more premium choices tend to cost at least £700 ($870) and can rise as high as £2,000 ($2,500).

How long can my child use a travel system stroller?

Travel systems are designed for use from birth right up until the ages of 4-5, depending on your child’s size and weight (and if they still need/want to use it). 

The carrycot (or carrycot function) should be used from birth until your baby is around six months old, or when they are able to sit up unaided. After that point, they can use the toddler seat in either the forward or rear-facing positions. 

All brands use weight rather than age as the clearest indicator of when it’s time to stop using a travel system stroller. Most tend to go up to 22kg (50lbs) which is around the age of four or five.

Can travel systems be used off road?

The purpose of a travel system is to be your everyday stroller from birth to toddler and beyond, and so it needs to meet your everyday needs. 

While they’re not designed specifically for off-road usage, they can still be used. Plenty of brands use suspension systems to make it easier to push off-road, and some will use air-inflated tyres. 

Consider what your everyday needs are to help make your decision. If you live in the city and will only occasionally need to push the stroller off-road, suspension and air-inflated tyres shouldn’t be a huge factor. If you live in the countryside, however, and you’re regularly talking walks on gravel tracks and bumpy terrains, you might need to stump up for a more premium model with better suspension and off-road capabilities.  

Which travel system is best for tall dads?

As a tall dad, there’s nothing worse than spending a couple of years hunched and slouched over the handlebars as you push your child around. 

So finding a travel system stroller with adjustable or extendable handlebars is essential for you. At the top end, the Mamas & Papas Ocarro has brilliant handlebar adjustment, while at the other end the Kinderkraft 3-in-1 MOOV has a handy five-point adjustment. What to consider before buying a travel system

• The upper age, or weight limit, for the travel system. Many capsules are only suitable for much younger babies, so you might want to look for a travel system which adapts to fit a toddler seat if you’re hoping to use it for a while.
• Does the stroller seat recline fully flat? If not, you’ll need a travel system which includes a carrycot or bassinet if you have a very young baby.
• Make sure the car seat that comes with your travel system fits your car perfectly. You might need to trial this in person.
• Where do you mostly plan to walk with your stroller? If you’re a city slicker, you’ll want a lightweight and easy-to-maneuver model. But if you’re hoping to take country walks with your little one, the stroller part of your travel system will need suitable, off-road wheels.
• Think about what dimensions and weights will suit your lifestyle. Will the stroller fit into the boot of your car when it’s collapsed? Can you easily carry the capsule with the baby inside it?
• Above all else, you want a travel system to make your life easier. So look for systems where the components are simple and quick to swap in and out. Again, this might be something you’d prefer to test out in person.

Safety is paramount in any baby gear. In our travel system guide we like to recommend travel systems that meet or exceed safety standards outlined by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) . With that being said we still recommend checking specific features on the stroller, on the car seat, and on the overall travel system when the stroller and car seat are together.

Stroller Safety Features

Here is a list of safety features we recommend in our travel system guide that your family should consider before deciding on what stroller you want for your family:

• Sturdy Frame:  Ensure it feels solid, not flimsy. Ensure it is able to securely lock open before putting your child in.
• Restraint System:  A good stroller should have a sturdy restraint system with a five-point harness that includes shoulder straps, a strap between the legs, and waist belts. Ensure the latches and locks work appropriately and are built from strong material.
• Brakes:  Look for strollers that have easy-to-operate brakes that lock within the wheels. Always check the brakes and the swivel lock mechanisms before buying. Additionally, some strollers include a tether strap that can prevent the stroller from rolling away if you accidentally let go.
• Wheels: Your baby’s fingers should not be able to reach the stroller wheels. Also, consider the size and type of wheels based on where you’ll be using the stroller most often (e.g., larger, air-filled tires for uneven surfaces).
• Warranty and Certification:  Ensure there are no recalls and understand the return policy. Check the certification to ensure the stroller complies with the mandatory federal safety standards, for example check the product for the AS/NZS 2088 label, which ensures it meets certain safety standards. And, of course, no matter how safe the stroller may be, never leave your child unattended in it.

Infant Car Seat Safety Features

When buying an infant car seat, safety is the number one priority. Here are some key safety features to look for:

• Base and Installation: A car seat that is not installed correctly can compromise your child’s safety. Choose a car seat with clear instructions and indicators that show when the seat is installed correctly. Ensure it has a strong base that can lock into your car properly with use of the lap belt, latch system or other mechanism.
• Age Appropriate: The car seat should be appropriate for your child’s size. Infant car seats are typically rear-facing and designed for babies up to 35 pounds. Once your child outgrows this, you’ll need to switch to a convertible or forward-facing car seat. For newborns and small babies, look for a car seat that comes with inserts to ensure they are snug and secure.
• Expiration Date, Warranty, and Safety Certification: Car seats expire every six years, so double check the car seat expiration date to ensure it has not expired. Check the manufacturers warranty and return policy, and as always we recommend registering your product to be updated of any recalls. You can also confirm it is certified by the JPMA , which indicates that the car seat has been tested and meets the safety standards set by the federal government.

Travel System Safety Features

In addition to the items we outlined above for checking the stroller and the car seat individually, we wanted to recommend checking the following for when the car seat is attached to the stroller.

• Secure Attachment: Ensure the car seat is securely attached to the stroller. It should click into place and not move or wobble when touched. Some systems have visual or auditory indicators to confirm secure attachment.
• Stability: Check the stability of the travel system once the car seat is attached. The weight of the car seat and baby can change the center of gravity of the stroller. It should not tip over easily.
• Car Seat Direction: The car seat should always be attached to the stroller in a rear-facing position, so you can keep an eye on your little one. This is the safest position for a baby to travel in.
• Brakes: Make sure the brakes work effectively even when the car seat is attached to the stroller.
• Canopy Alignment: If both the car seat and stroller have canopies, ensure they align well when the car seat is attached to provide maximum protection from the sun, wind, or rain.

Additionally, it was really sunny where we lived so I knew a canopy that provided maximum coverage was a must!

Travel System Guide Step 5: Consider Comfort and Convenience

Look for a travel system that can provide the most comfort for you and your little one . Consider the features of the stroller as well as the quality of fabrics used on the car seat and the stroller. Consider a stroller with a reclining seat for napping on the go. Consider the wheel type (plastic or rubber) and good suspension to ensure a smooth ride. For weather as has been stated here for maybe 100 times: 1) check various web sites for average temps, 2) 1 week before you leave, check various web sites for 10 day forecasts, keep doing this up until the day you leave. NO ONE here or anywhere in the world can tell you any better...

If you mean breastfeeding in public places, there are different opinions. I find it quite normal, but some conservative people might find it inappropriate - you never know! There are no special laws on breastfeeding in Russia, it's just a matter of etiquette. I wouldn't advice breastfeeding while in a restaurant or in metro or other crowded places. But if you're sitting somewhere in a park, it's ok, I guess... Using a sling would be a good idea though.

For restaurants: better ask a waiter whether they have a nursing room, and if they don't (and they don't object to breastfeeding in general), better cover up a bit...

- It's as safe as anywhere else - depends more on you and the baby. Better consult your doctor about travelling in general.

It is a baby friendly place - you will get a lot of support from locals. Maybe some unsolicited parenting advice. I am not sure breastfeeding in public has penetrated the mainstream.

Like others have said, for public places a sling or a hootie-hider (apologies, it's an actual brand name) is the way to go :-)

Getting to Russia

Most visitors to Russia need a visa to enter the country. You can check here to see if your exempted from needing one, but please always check with your local Russian Embassy or Consulate, as visa requirements change regularly. Since most of our readers are from the United States, this section will provide some more detail about the process for Americans applying for visas to Russia.

As of 2018, Americans generally can get either a single entry, double entry, or three year multiple entry visa for Russia. You will usually need to fill out an application form, obtain a letter of invitation (from either a travel agency, hotel, tour company, or Russian citizen), and then submit your application, passport, and letter to the nearest Russian Embassy or Consulate. We always found it easier to obtain visas with the help of a visa agency, such as ILS or other related companies.

Airports and Getting Into Moscow

Moscow is a huge city and is served by four international airports. Most likely, you will arrive at either Sheremetyevo ( SVO ) or Domodedovo ( DME ). After arrival, we have discovered several options to get into the city:

• Taxi or Private Car (90 minutes to 3 hours): Generally it will cost between $50 and $150 for a private car transfer into the city, cheaper options may be available, but quality can vary. If you use a Taxi, some options include Uber , Yandex Taxi , or Gett Taxi . They have excellent mobile apps and are generally of good quality in our experience. We prefer to use them for intercity trips instead of airport transfers due to cost. Private Car hire is also possible, and there are several companies that offer this option. If you are booking with a travel agency, they may be able to arrange something for you. When traveling with children, we often use this option if we have a lot of luggage. If you need child car seats in your taxis, you can also look at Lingo Taxi and Detskoe Taxi .
• Bus: There is bus service to the airports, but we do not recommend it for first time visitors to Russia, as it can be easy to get on the wrong bus. We generally use buses for inter-city transportation only.

Getting Around Moscow

Moscow is a very walkable for such a large city. The city center is full of historic sites that you will want to see and walking is the easiest way to get to them. There are some very wide roads in Moscow and you will notice that many crosswalks are actually underground. Many areas have tunnels that connect a large amount of streets and sites, particularly near the Kremlin. The only problem with walking in Moscow with a baby or toddler are the perehods if you have a stroller. If you are using a baby carrier, you will find the city is easy to walk between the major sites.

The Moscow Metro is iconic. Not only is it the easiest way to get around the city, most of the stations are sites themselves. Many metro stations are heavily adorned with many types of art and chandeliers. Moscow has been adding signs with Latin characters and English translations to help tourist navigate the city. You can get to most destinations with only one transfer. The hardest part about using the metro in Moscow with a baby or toddler is that most stations require using long escalators. This can make using a stroller challenging. There are usually stairs involved when transferring stations.

If you are riding during peak times, do not be surprised when a Muscovite steps up to help. It is expected that passengers will give up seats to the elderly, handicapped, or children. If a passenger stands up as you board and you have a baby or toddler, then that seat is for you and you will be expected to take it. Likewise if you are a healthy-looking male traveling with your family, you will be expected to give up your seat in a car without empty seats.

Buying a Ticket

You will need to get a ticket at either an automated machine or cashier. At the machines you may buy a single or double ride ticket (these tickets also cost more than higher multiple tickets). At the cashier, you can buy any number of rides or monthly, quarterly, or yearly metro passes. All tickets are usable on the metro and bus system.

Troika Card

A Troika card has been extremely useful. This is a hard plastic card that can be used for metro and bus rides, in addition to paying for several other locations in the city. The card is cheap (approximately $1) and is simply loaded with Russian rubles either in cash or via credit card. Discounted fares are automatically taken from your card when you enter the metro, bus, etc and touch it to the ticket terminal. You may purchase these at any Metro cashier. Moscow has a large bus and train system that serves the entire city and outlying regions. The buses can be very useful in Moscow with a baby or toddler because they are easy to ride with a stroller. Often, travel by bus can be quicker than travel by metro depending on the destinations involved. Many of the bus stops in the center of the city now have electronic signs indicating the next bus arriving and an estimated arrival time for the next several buses. Apps such as Yandex Maps or Google Maps are often able to provide you with the specific bus and stops that you need and have been very helpful to us.

Yandex/Uber/Gett/Taxis

Moscow has a very active taxi market. We have had great success with Uber, Yandex.Taxi, and Gett – but many other options also exist in the city. Be sure to have the apps downloaded prior to your arrival for the best experience.

Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

• Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
• You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
• There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
• Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
• If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
• You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
• You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
