7 Reasons Why Cruise Control is Not Working

cruise control not working

Cruise control has been around since the late 1950s. There was a time when you could only find this convenient feature in a few model vehicles. Nowadays, it seems like virtually every model vehicle on the road has a cruise control feature.

Cruise control not engaging seems like a trivial issue, but the inability to activate this convenient feature can certainly dampen any road trip. While cruise control failures “rarely” pose safety risks, determining the root cause is necessary to restore its use. Let’s look at the common causes of cruise control malfunction.

Table of Contents

Cruise Control Problems (Accelerating or Maintaining Speed)

If your cruise control feature malfunctions and stops working altogether, you may not think it’s an immediate concern. You’ll probably figure that you just can’t use cruise control anymore until you get the problem fixed.

However, the problem with your cruise control might be related to an acceleration issue too. In fact, there are components of cruise control which can have an adverse effect on the acceleration if those components are bad. That is why you need to be aware of what causes cruise control issues.

Common Causes of Cruise Control Not Working

There are several possible causes of cruise control not working. Below are the top 6 most common causes. Check each of these areas and see if they’re the cause of your cruise control issue. In many cases, the remedy to the problem is not that complicated or expensive.

1) Cruise Control Switch

cruise control switch

The cruise control switch is what you use to set your cruising speed. This information is transmitted to the engine control unit and cruise control module in order to sustain the acceleration speed.

If the contacts inside the cruise control switch were to wear out, then the module and unit might not receive the necessary speed information it needs to keep the acceleration going. In response, the system will deactivate entirely and cancel the current cruise acceleration set.

2) Brake Light Switch

bad brake light switch

Normally, you press the brake pedal to turn off cruise control. The brake light switch must be detected by the cruise control system for this to happen.

If it cannot detect the switch, then cruise control will disable itself automatically until the brake light switch issue is fixed.

A faulty brake light switch can also cause your brake lights to stay on .

3) Blown Fuse

fuse box

The electrical components of the cruise control system are protected by fuses. Like inside your house, it is possible to blow a fuse. This will cause the cruise control system to turn off until the fuse is replaced.

4) Check Engine Warning Light

oil pressure check engine light

If the check engine warning light comes on, it usually means there is a problem with your transmission or engine. Once the engine control unit detects this problem, it may disable your cruise control system in response as a safety precaution.

Until you fix the engine issue, the cruise control will stay disabled.

5) Vehicle Speed Sensor

transmission speed sensor

Most vehicles have a few vehicle speed sensors to transmit speed information about the vehicle to the engine control unit and the cruise control module. The only way your cruise control module is going to know how fast the vehicle is moving is if the vehicle speed sensors feed this information to it.

If the module cannot detect the speed because of faulty speed sensors, then the cruise control system will automatically deactivate.

6) Electrical Issues

car wiring low voltage

There are several electrical components connected to the cruise control system. The connectors and wiring harnesses, and ground straps are definitely components that you need to check when the cruise control stops working.

Make sure the source of the voltage is still supplying power to the system as well. If any of these components are loose or damaged, then it would explain why the cruise control isn’t functioning.

7) Loose or Broken Cruise Control Cable

cruise control cable

Older vehicles that are equipped with cruise control have two throttle cables – one for the gas pedal and one for the cruise control system.

These cables may stretch over time. If the cruise control cable has stretched or is broken, the cruise control system will not be able to operate the throttle plate properly.

Adaptive Cruise Control Specific Problems

adaptive cruise control

Adaptive cruise control gives an extra layer of convenience while driving, as it adjusts your vehicle’s speed based on the distance to the car in front of you. However, this presents additional causes of cruise control failure.

One issue you might face is obstructed sensors. Both radar and cameras are important components of the adaptive cruise control system. When there’s dirt, debris, or ice covering these sensors, your cruise control can stop functioning. To prevent this, regularly clean your vehicle’s sensors, making sure they’re unobstructed.

Separately, failed cameras can also be a culprit. If the cameras aren’t working correctly, you may see an error warning. It’s best to get this checked by a professional to determine whether the cameras need repair or replacement. Hopefully it’s not as they are an expensive replacement.

Apart from cameras, adaptive cruise control relies heavily on radar technology for proper functioning. A misaligned or malfunctioning radar sensor can cause your system to behave irregularly. Again, consult a qualified technician to diagnose the issue and, if needed, recalibrate or replace the radar system.

Safe Driving Without Cruise Control

When cruise control systems fail, it presents challenges adjusting to speed management without the consistent pacing it provides. But there are a few things you can do.

  • Focus on scanning gauges more frequently to stay actively aware of mph.
  • Avoid zoning out on long hauls.
  • Set phone alerts every few miles to remind checking current travel speed.
  • Know highway speed limits well so mentally benchmarking against them continues subconsciously.
  • Take frequent breaks stretching legs to re-energize alertness until able to diagnose cruise faults.
  • Consider alternative adaptive cruise technologies equipped on newer vehicles if financially viable, providing automated incremental slowing when closing distances on lead cars.
  • Remain vigilant of lead car distances and your own speed fluctuations.
  • Utilize open lanes with fewer surrounding vehicles if possible, reducing needs for continual minor adjustments.
  • Stay alert with renewed attention and defensive awareness absent cruise controls automated convenience until repairs are completed.

Intermittent Fault Identification

When cruise controls experience occasional yet repeating failures, meticulously logging every instance of malfunction helps uncover patterns guiding toward root causes.

Date and time each cutoff or disengagement that happens while activated. Detail any environmental or operational conditions present such as: weather, bumpy vs smooth roads, stop & go traffic versus highway speeds.

Reviewing complete repair histories alongside these event logs indicates if previously replaced components only provided temporary fixes before subsequent re-failure later on. Share documented patterns of when and how interruptions occur with shop technicians to guide their pathway tracing and component testing.

The goal is determining if specific elements like an old switch, wire insulation or solder joint chronically breaks down only under certain temperature, vibration or usage strain thresholds.

Cruise Control Repair Costs

So, your cruise control decided to take a break, and now you’re wondering how much it’ll cost to fix it. Well, repair costs vary depending on the specific issue and your vehicle’s make and model. This section will provide you with an idea of what to expect in terms of expenses.

Let’s look at the common reasons for cruise control problems and their approximate price range for replacement or repair:

  • Faulty Cruise Control Switch – $100 – $200. A bit more expensive than a brake light switch.
  • Blown Fuse  – $5 – $30. Quick and affordable to replace.
  • Faulty Brake Light Switch  – $50 – $150. Can be a bit pricier but still manageable.
  • Defective Speed Sensor – $100 – $300. Falls somewhere in the middle of the price spectrum.
  • Throttle Control System Issues – $200 – $600. More expensive to diagnose and fix.
  • ABS-related Problems  – $200 – $1,000. Can also be quite costly to repair.
  • Broken Vacuum Line  – $50 – $150. Applicable to older systems and typically inexpensive to fix.

How Does Cruise Control Work?

If you normally drive long distances, especially on the interstate, then cruise control lets you take your foot off the gas while the car maintains the same speed, giving your leg a rest. This may seem like merely a luxurious feature rather than a necessity, but many people depend on it for safe driving.

There are several different types of cruise control systems, but all implementations share similar basic components. There is a sensor to measure vehicle speed, a throttle position sensor , and some mechanism to control the throttle plate without the use of the gas pedal.

Outputs from the speed and throttle position sensors allow the engine computer to determine how much the throttle plate needs to open or close to maintain speed.

Cruise control systems may also use sensors in the transmission, taking the current gear and engine vacuum into account. Throttle position will be different in each gear at a given speed, especially when driving over hills.

have a 2006 VW new Beetle my cruise works fine until i go to pass some one ,any idea what would cause it to do this? ?

When you hit the gas pedal to overtake, you might be disengaging cruise control.

i’ve heard that bad fuel can create such issue. As stated above, the Check Engine light will come on as part of the safety features to inform you something is not right. Cruise control picks up on this and shuts down.

The engine light was flashing then it stopped then started again, the cruise control is disabled but did come on a couple of times but went off when the engine needed to accelerate, the engine shakes when I. Accelerate too.

my aftermarket cruise on a 2013 Kio Rio LX wont light up

You’re going to have a hard time with finding help for that without providing the name and model of the aftermarket system. It might be best to take it to someone so they can troubleshoot in person.

My cruise indicator light will turn on but when I try to set the speed the light will shut off and not turn back on until I restart the engine. Any ideas what it might be?

Did you ever figure this one out. I got 99 Durango does this too

Cruise control goes rite into high speed when turned on,what could the problem be?

This helped me a lot. I got more out of your 6 reasons a cruise control may not work, than when I inquired about the same situation and got nothing. Thank You, Janet M.

Thanks for the feedback, Janet!

Helpful. Thank you

I recently came across my old Tacoma by happenstance at a used car lot. The nostalgia took over and I scooped it up. I'm in the process of cleaning up the PO's/stealership's mess. One thing that has me stumped is the cruise control cable. It has WAY too much slack and I'm not sure why. Also it is offset from its attachment point on the throttle to where it clamps to the bracket. Does anybody have some knowledge to share? Maybe the original cable broke and was replaced with the wrong one? Maybe the bracket on the throttle side was swapped out and is shorter than the original? Hoping to find out what most likely happened so I'm not chasing the wrong parts. Thanks.

Have you tried adjusting it at all? See the 2 nuts that are holding the cable sleeve to that bracket? Those are the adjusting nuts. See if they are loose. The one furthest away will adjust the cable tension. You don't want it super tight, just leave a small amount of slack. The front nut will lock everything into place.

#3 IdaTacoTRD [OP] Member

That was my original plan when I was adjusting the throttle cable but there's not nearly enough room left in the adjustment to take up all that slack. I popped the other end off of the cruise control box and it looked normal...

#4 xtremewlr Well-Known Member

Might just be the cable has stretched out then. Mine has some slack in it from the years but not that much. I'm at the end of adjustment too so will probably have to replace the cable at some point if I want to keep the cruise feature.

#5 xtremewlr Well-Known Member

Looking closer, I wonder if the PO maybe removed some stuff from your TB. My 99 looks a little different although we have the same Ford cruise units.

#6 IdaTacoTRD [OP] Member

You're right it is different. Not sure why. I stopped by the junkyard today and found exactly 1 3.4l 4runner that happened to still have the cruise unit. I grabbed the cable and compared it to mine. Mine was about 1" longer so I swapped them. This one still has to be adjusted all the way out like yours appears to be, but it worked. I can now cruise again! Still don't know how the original cable could have stretched that much....

It appears the valve covers were off somewhat recently. All that would have been removed to get to the valve covers. Maybe some shade tree stuff went on.... I'm pretty sure the guy that traded it in is the same one I sold it to 4.5 years ago. Might have to look him up to get the story. Another thing I found: The PO must have become frustrated with the parking brake light coming on all the time and instead of tightening the cable adjustment by the frame he cut the wires from the switch that controls the parking brake light...... At least it was an easy fix. I'm still super stoked to have it back though because this was my first vehicle I got when I was 15. I built the tube bumpers for it when I was 17 in my buddy's shop. I won multiple trophies drag racing it at the local strip in the "high school" class. Lots of memories...

@IdaTacoTRD Your throttle body has been swapped out with an auto trans t-body. They may have a different bracket/cable and do not have a dashpot, the black plastic thing on the front seen in post #5.

#10 IdaTacoTRD [OP] Member

That makes sense. I did see witness marks where the transmission cable had been hooked to it. Why would the cruise cable not line up right though? Were the brackets different?

#11 xtremewlr Well-Known Member

I don't think the cruise brackets are different, looks the same to mine. I think the cable cams on the TB are setup differently and like @Dirty Pool said, yours doesn't have the dashpot that mine does.

#12 IdaTacoTRD [OP] Member

Weird. Well I suppose I'll leave it alone for now because it's working fine. Thanks

Prolly entirely different motor.

#15 Dirty Pool FLIES ON THE FRIES, KETCHUPS WATERED DOWN

@IdaTacoTRD If it feels good to you then carry on. The dashpot is designed to "cushion/slow" the final bit of throttle plate closure, improves "drive-ability" when shifting gears.

#16 IdaTacoTRD [OP] Member

Thanks I was wondering what the dashpot was for. I'm not having any trouble rev matching or anything. Now I am really curious as to whether the engine was swapped. Maybe I can do a title search and get the PO's name. I should have kept his info when I sold it....

I see where the cable would be clamped to a bracket close to the MAF. That clamp is gone on my 80 series. Your pictures are of a different vehicle I assume? Not a 97 FZJ80?

The photos are from my 1997 FZJ80 (US Spec). They may look a bit different because I put heat shrink tubing over all of them including the fatter Throttle (kick-down) cable with the fraying cloth wrap. Main problem is that your Throttle cable and Cruise control cables are in the wrong positions (switched at the Throttle body). Read my post above and look at the photos, they are correct for your model. @Damcowboy : I added a few more photos above, double click on the photos for a close up view.

Thanks Kernal for the pics. They answer some questions and also prompt a couple more. I need to study your pictures a while first I think

cruise control cable loose

  • Add to quote

Hey all, Replaced valve cover gasket in my 4.0 today...now CC cable (middle cable at throttle body) is loose...and pops off when accelerating... Anybody know how to snug tension back up on it?

cruise control cable loose

I don't recall any adjustment for the cruise control cable. The cable to the transmission throttle must be adjusted properly, and has the white adjustment clip. If the cruise cable is popping off, it is either not snapped onto the 'ball' on the throttle bracket, or the end of the cable has snapped, and won't lock onto the ball.

doityourselfMM said: If the cruise cable is popping off, it is either not snapped onto the 'ball' on the throttle bracket, or the end of the cable has snapped, and won't lock onto the ball. Click to expand...

Any chance the 'cup' was cracked or damaged at some point in time? I know that if those clips are pulled off incorrectly, they will crack and lose their ability to snap on tightly.

Nope...perfectly in tact..

If you remove the clip from the throttle bracket, does the inner cable move back and forth freely, inside the cable sheath? I think you should have some free play, maybe 2 inches or so? If it is binding, that could cause the symptoms you are experiencing.

Yeah...it just moves freely with said 2" slack. Going to check it out further in a couple days...haven't had time lately...and no hurry to have Cruise Control working.. Thanks for your imput.

The CC clip can take quite a bit of force to pop on. You should feel a definitive snap/pop when its correctly attached to the stud, if you're not hearing or feeling that happen, then the CC cable is not fully seated onto the stud or the clip is broken. You can put a little bit of PB Blaster or WD40 (via Q-tip) onto the stud to help you pop it into place, however I like to use a large flat bladed screwdriver and push it into place that way.

Yeah...apparently the other end got detached ...or got slack at the least...surprised this happened being that I turned the throttle to release most of the pressure to remove it initially.

The Cruise Actuator end of the cable is 'fixed'. No adjustment, no removal, no repair. Just replace. But if the cable moves inside the sheath, I don't see how that would be causing the clip to pop off the throttle lever 'ball' stud. I'm familiar with this as I replaced mine several months ago. I always clean and lube the exposed part of the cable, clips, and studs with ATF4 on a Q Tip. It lubricates, but does not collect dirt and dust as readily as other oils.

cruise control cable replacement

  • Add to quote

98 740i i just had my water pump and belts replaced and the mechanic did not reconnect the cruise control cable because it was rusty and he deemed it not safe fearing it might stick (he forgot to tell me and i found out 2 days later) where can i find the "correct proper quality" cable without going to the BMW parts department? i understand the same quality parts are available elsewhere but i dont know where to look also, is this a easy DIY job or is it something tricky? thanks

Advance auto parts owns world pak I've had very good luck with them. Oebimmerparts is online and Max over there is excellent !

On the webpage menu bar at the top is a "Site Sponsors" button...start there. Just a few places of the top of my head besides the dealership: ECSTuning, OEMbimmerparts, bavauto, fcpeuro. Don't know how hard it is but you can check a few places: Bentley (repair manual), E38.org , Timm's meeknet . Oh, and there is a member on the E46 page (Silbervogel) with a link in his signature for a program that checks stock and tons of different places and gives you what their price is.

Why did My Cruise Control Stop Working – Troubleshoot Yourself

cruise control cable loose

Cruise control is one of the greatest inventions, in my opinion, especially when you have to travel long distances daily.

It is just like autopilot. Get on a highway and relax; set your foot aside, maintain a speed, turn the cruise control on and let it take control. The modern ones even have extraordinary features like maintain a particular speed and a distance from other vehicles.

If you are used to the luxury and ease of cruise control and it becomes faulty, then it can get pretty annoying. Nonetheless, it can also be quite dangerous. How may you ask?

A failed cruise control can lead to severe consequences like collision with other vehicles.

Table of Contents

Why did My Cruise Control Stop Working?

There are many reasons which may lead to cruise control stop working. Some of the most commons ones include a lousy cruise control switch, blown a fuse, brake switch, or faulty cruise control motor.

If you wonder why your cruise control is not working, it could be any of these reasons. Let us a better look into it.

Vehicle Speed Sensor

Cruise control needs to monitor the vehicle’s actual speed to adjust the speed utilizing that information. For this purpose, it has a vehicle speed sensor mounted on the transmission.

A problem with this sensor can hinder the cruise control’s function as if it misreads the speed irregularly or doesn’t show any reading at all. It won’t work correctly.

Point to remember:  Most cruise control won’t work at 25-30mph.

Bad Cruise Control Switch

One of the most known and experienced symptoms of a bad cruise control switch is if your cruise control turns on but does not set.

It happens when the contacts present inside the lever aren’t touching each other properly or have worn out. In this case, the switch fails to contact the CCM (Cruise Control Module).

If it happens to your vehicle, the cruise control might go off completely, or it might not respond to the acceleration or the cancel function.

Cruise Control Fuse

Most of the electric problems can sort out by replacing a blown fuse. If out of nowhere, your cruise control stops working and even pushing the cruise button does not illuminate the indicator lights, then a blown fuse could be the culprit.

To fix the fuse, you will first need to locate it. Check the user’s manual for this.

Cruise Control Relays

When there is a problem with the relays of the cruise control, the lights don’t stay on. The light will remain on only when you are holding the switch.

As soon as you let it go, the light will go off too. It shows that the relays have gone bad and require replacement.

Brake Switch

Another culprit could be the brake pedal switch. To get to the root of the problem, you need an answer: Do your brake lights work? That is what will indicate a problem.

If the brake switch isn’t functional, the cruise control won’t work either. For the CCM to work, it needs to detect the brake light switch signal. Otherwise, it would disengage the cruise control. Remember applying the brakes cancels the cruise control automatically.

Loose Throttle Cable

Ensure all the cables are fixed in their places properly, and nothing is loose because it can hinder the vehicle’s performance.

A loose cable at the throttle plate can also cause a cruise control switch not to function correctly, but if you hear a clicking sound on engaging the throttle cable, that means the wires have entirely come off.

Don’t worry, though. Putting back the cable in its place is no big deal. It takes no more than 30 seconds and is pretty easy to locate, too, so it won’t be much hassle.

Cruise Control Servo

If the cable is attached correctly, but the cruise controls are still not working, the servo or the regulator itself might have an issue. In this case, the little motor in there becomes faulty and fails to generate enough power to pull on the throttle and control the speed.

LED Tail Lights/ Back Lights

If your vehicle has LED tail lights, there is a high chance the cruise control would not work unless you solder in a resister in there.

I have personally faced this problem in my Honda Civic. Some systems might also experience a disabled cruise control when the brake light blows.

Aftermarket lighting like LED brake light conversion, draws less current than an incandescent bulb, so doing so will trick your car’s CCM into thinking the brake light has gone out.

Check Engine Light

The first thing you should try doing when you suspect a faulty cruise control is to checks the engine light; if it is on and cruise control is not working.

Some modern vehicles have ETCS (Electronic Throttle Control System). Cruise control in such vehicles gets disabled when a problem in the transmission or engine occurs.

Vacuum Leak

Older models of various vehicles used vacuum actuators to control the throttle body when the cruise control is in operation. If the vacuum has a leak, most likely caused by a crack in the hose of the tube, the system won’t carry the functions correctly.

Why Does My Cruise Control Not Work Sometimes?

Sometimes a cruise control works intermittently. There can be three common reasons why it would happen. It is either lousy vehicle speed sensors, a problem with LED tail lights, or some fault in the engine lights.

A faulty brake pedal switch can be another reason, but that happens rarely.

Where is the Fuse for Cruise Control?

To locate the fuse for the cruise control, look into the steering wheel cable reel. It is the point where the horn and cruise control circuits are present simultaneously.

To distinguish it in the whole mechanism, look for a cowling knee, that is, the panel. You can find it behind the steering wheel, towards the south.

Nonetheless, I always recommend consulting the user manual to locate it more accurately.

What is the Cruise Control Fuse Called?

cruise control cable loose

Unlike most car equipment, a fuse cruise control fuse has got no specific name. There are numbers on the fuse for identification purposes.

Usually, cruise control has the number 47 on it in the fuse box.

I lost cruise control functionality. Any suggestions as to what to check next? All fuses are intact and there is power to the connector side of the cruise control module. Thanks for your help.

+1 above and also id like to add, in rare cases I have heard that bad brake light bulb connection on the rear can cause issues with cruise control. I know this is an issue in the E28s and seems to affect some E32s.

Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
Xalt, Shogun: I get to look at everything mechanical and they're ok. Basing on the schematic diagram, I see all voltages going to the connector that plugs into the cruise control module except pin 3 which is B+ and comes from the shifter position P or N. I did not lose cruise control while the car was moving but it's like today I used it and then tomorrow it's gone and it was that time when I have to drive 800 miles with no cruise control and stiffer than normal gas pedal. way too much exercise for my right foot ... - - - Updated - - - SergeBMW: I didn't have and still don't have a brake lights warning but I'll check them just to make sure. Thanks.

E32FAN is offline

I once had an intermittent cruise control actuator that had a bad solder joint. It would stop working when the engine bay was too hot. Will your cruise sometimes resume working during your 800 mile trip?
E32Fan: It's dead ever since and that's more than a week now. How did you find out that it's the actuator that was bad?
Originally Posted by joleonie E32Fan:How did you find out that it's the actuator that was bad? 12V applied to pins 1 and 4 will turn the gearmotor and you will hear it running, CW or CCW as you like. But nothing happens until 12V is applied to the clutch solenoid at pins 2 and 3. You will hear the snap of the armature, which pushes the gearmotor pinion onto the red capstan gear, which winds the Bowden cable and the coiled spring. Don't force travel past the limits. If these parts work OK then you can check the potentiometer at pins 5, 6, and 8. You can pry off the round black inspection cover and you will see the pinion. No need to open the cover - just look through the inspection hole.

You have a 1990 M30. I do also and I don't have EML. I have two cables together. One going to the gas pedal and one going to the cruise control box. A few years ago my cruise control cable snapped so I replaced them both. Are you sure your problem is nothing more than a broken cable? Click my youtube video below and at the very beginning you'll see both cables.

E32FAN: I will test the motor and clutch of the actuator today and we'll see what happens. I am actually leaning towards electrical problem maybe on the module side. I had this car for the 3rd week now and slowly I am coming across intermittent problems here and there including transmission not shifting to 3rd gear yesterday on city streets, from a stand still on a red light and parking light warning and license plate light warning etc. I love this car. - - - Updated - - - CroughtonE32: I checked the cruise control cable and it is okay but I will check again just to make sure. Thanks.
Update: Cruise control is working again. I tried what E32FAN did to the actuator and it's the clutch that got stuck or something. I tried to energize it and only on the 4th try did I hear a fairly loud click. Took the car for a test drive and confirmed it's working. Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated.

I was wondering if I can just remove the cruise control module. I'm not so worried about removing the throttle cable, I just wanna know if I can only remove the module or if there is more involved. The cruise control does not work and I am trying to put my car on a diet.

If you're trying to loose weight and clean the engine bay up you should get a manual throttle cable that connects directly from the gas pedal to the throttle body. That way you can loose the giant box and motor on top of your driver side valve cover (if its located in the same spot as my 96, not sure). You'll not only loose cruise but also traction control, but who wants that anyways. They dont sell this cable at dealers anymore but if you search online you can find one as I did. Also this will have to be done anyways if you ever plan to use tall valve covers in the future.

I don't think 94's had traction control, I believe that started in 95. It was optional.

Ahh. Good call

i have a 94 and it has traction control on it.......

Last chance to get a Sam's Club membership for $14, the lowest price of 2024

This content is sponsored by Sam's Club.

Spring expenses can kind of sneak up on you. With the weather improving this April, you might be more likely to eat out. Spring break travel can add up. There's spring cleaning , of course -- you may need to pick up a  new robot vacuum . And if you've been itching to spend time outside this spring, you might want to pick up some new patio furniture or a grill for your outdoor space. Before you know it, your bank account is looking a little... thin.

Here's the thing, though: There's a way to save on all those big spring purchases. Warehouse chain Sam's Club offers deep discounts on all of the above -- yes, travel and eating out included. Altogether, you can save  thousands of dollars a year.

If you're not a Sam's Club member, we have even better news: The warehouse giant is discounting new memberships in April 2024, all the way down to $14 for a yearly Club-level membership. That's a savings of 72% off the usual $50 yearly membership fee. (Note that you'll need to be a new Sam's Club member, and you'll need to agree to auto-renew.)

We also found a deal on Sam's Club Plus memberships, which offers 2% in rewards on purchases, plus other sweet perks. Sam's Club Plus memberships are just $50. That's $60 off the usual price.

This is the absolute best price we've seen for Sam's Club memberships in 2024, but don't delay: This incredible Sam's Club deal ends soon on April 30, 2024. Tap the button below to sign up for Sam's Club now at the discounted $14 rate, or read on to learn more about why Sam's Club is one of our favorite places to shop.

Sure, Moscow is the Russian political capital and the nation’s most populous city, but describing it as such couldn’t be any further from the truth. More accurately, Moscow is a city of contrasts.

It exudes history — its Kremlin dates back centuries, nodding to royalty and leadership old and now, while the famed Red Square, the poster child of the city, blends striking color with ancient tradition and religion.

On the other hand, it’s a city of modern pop culture and towering skyscrapers; a place where you’ll come across new-age museums, arts centers, manmade parks, and an efficient transportation system that’s one of the most beautiful in Europe.

It’s a city of longstanding culture — the Bolshoi Theater is an international symbol for excellence in classical dance, while Russia’s National Ballet Company remains renowned worldwide — as well as upbeat nightlife, with some of the world’s most celebrated rooftop bars and nightclubs.

While it’s a city filled with opposites, there remains no shortage of things to do in Moscow for all types of travelers — from those who want cultural immersion to those looking for an epic night out, you’ll be spoiled for choice. And if you’re not sure where to start, here’s a list of suggestions!

The Moscow Kremlin

If there’s any particular district begging to be the first place you visit on your trip, it’s the Kremlin.

Built in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible, the UNESCO-listed area has since become the heart of Russia’s capital city, where you’ll find several churches, palaces, and other noteworthy buildings.

We’ll dive into each of its main attractions in a second, but regardless of what you visit, try to make it to the Kremlin in time for sunset — because seeing its golden domes glinting in the late-afternoon light makes for one spectacular tourist photo!

1 – Admire the abundance of Kremlin towers | the Kremlin

Kremlin towers, Moscow

As your eyes dart down the towering red-brick Kremlin wall, the first thing you’ll notice is its large towers of all different styles and sizes.

With a whopping 20 separate minarets towering above the historic area, each with its own name, colors, features and history, a guided tour to learn each of their fascinating stories is a must.

To give you a little taste, the Konstantin-Yeleninskaya Tower once housed a torture chamber. Saviour’s Tower at the main entrance boasts a famous chiming clock, the Secret Tower houses a secret escape tunnel, and the Trinity Tower is the tallest of them all.

2 – Visit the enormous Grand Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

Grand Kremlin Palace, Moscow

A remarkable attraction in terms of both beauty and history, the Grand Kremlin Palace is an ornate rococo-style building that was commissioned during the reign of Nicholas I, and today acts as the official residence of none other than the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

Perched atop Borovitsky Hill, its 125-meter-long facade is unmissable, making for impressive photos.

Take note: guided tours are few and far between, so you’ll have to book a few weeks in advance if you want to check out the decorated inner sanctum.

3 – People-watch in Cathedral Square | the Kremlin

Cathedral Square, Moscow

One of the most popular areas in all of Moscow (sometimes called Sobornaya Square), with multiple massive churches at its heart, Cathedral Square is flanked by several historic buildings and is never shy of a tourist crowd.

The three main churches — each spectacular works of architecture in their own right — are the Cathedral of the Assumption (the oldest and the biggest of all Kremlin churches), the 16th-century Cathedral of the Archangel Michael (known for its beautiful Corinthian gables and turrets), and the golden-domed Cathedral of the Annunciation (which connects to the Grand Kremlin Palace’s main building).

Throw in the 60-meter-high Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the lesser-known Church of the Twelve Apostles , the Church of the Deposition of the Virgin’s Robe (underrated yet famous for its marvelous stained-glass windows), and the medieval residence-turned-museum that is The Patriarch’s Palace, and you can see why this square is regularly number one on any visitor’s list of things to do in Moscow.

4 – See a show at the State Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

State Kremlin Palace, Moscow

Just like the Grand Kremlin Palace , this theater and prestigious concert hall — with its grandiose facade and multiple sculptures — is another ornate building that’s worth admiring.

A popular place to hold conferences, the State Kremlin Palace was originally built as part of a larger complex for Communist Party meetings, but today hosts some of the biggest events in Moscow — we’re talkin’ sold-old ballet performances, world-famous concerts, opera shows, and festivals.

Check the website to see what’s on the calendar for your visit!

5 – See centuries worth of national treasures at the Armoury Chamber | the Kremlin

Armoury Chamber, Moscow

For anyone with an interest in historical weaponry and armor, this museum — which dates back to the early 1500s when it was created as the royal armory — is a must-see.

The Armoury Chamber (as well as the Diamond Fund Exhibition) is home to some of the most valuable objects that were originally owned by Russian monarchs — from jeweled heirlooms and intricate boxes to ornately decorated pistols and swords — many of which are centuries old.

Within the armoury chamber, you’ll also find the Russian historical regalia, a collection of artifacts that belonged to Russian tsars and emperors between the 13th and 20th centuries, highlighted by the Ivory Throne and the Monomakh’s Cap.

6 – Step inside the Palace of the Facets | the Kremlin

Palace of the Facets, Moscow

The Palace of the Facets is one of the most underrated buildings in all of Moscow, largely because it’s not as widely promoted or photographed even though its exterior adorns some postcards.

From the outside, it blends in with the crowd. But step inside and you’ll discover a world of beauty and wonder — its frescoes, golden columns and enormous rooms are a sight to behold

The Palace of the Facets is not only a piece of art (literally, with painted walls), dating back over 500 years, but also acted as the dining hall for the Tsars.

7 – Feel small next to the Tsar Bell | the Kremlin

Tsar Bell, Moscow

Making Philadelphia’s famous Liberty Bell look diminutive in size, this monument , which never actually functioned as a bell due to its immense size (at 205 tons and standing 20.1 feet high!), has found fame in recent years for being the heaviest attraction inside The Kremlin.

With the bronze landmark’s claim to fame of being the biggest bell in the world, it presents as a great, quick photo op when roaming through the Kremlin.

8 – Check out the Senate Palace | the Kremlin

Senate Palace, Moscow

Another architectural masterpiece that’s tucked away within the Kremlin, this palace is famous for being one of Moscow’s most beautiful buildings — its yellow façade curves around to face inward and truly engulf anyone who stands near it.

Built back in the late 1700s, today it houses the Russian presidential administration and, unfortunately for us, is off limits to the general public.

Still, admiring it from outside, with the nearby Tsar Cannon, is certainly good enough.

9 – Grab a photo in front of the Tsar Cannon | the Kremlin

Tsar Cannon, Moscow

One of Moscow’s most iconic symbols, Tsar Cannon (or Royal Cannon) is a cannon that was manufactured in 1586 and resides — yep, you guessed it — within The Kremlin.

Following the theme of the enormous Tsar Bell, it weighs a whopping 39 tons — making it one of the world’s largest cannons even though it has never been shot.

And while its size may be impressive on its own, what makes this cannon so special is that it’s adorned with intricate carvings, ornaments, inscriptions, and a figure of a horse-riding Tsar Feodor the Bellringer.

10 – Join a tour of the Terem Palace | the Kremlin

Terem Palace, Moscow

A stunning, fairytale-like palace that’s steeped in history and detail, the five-story Terem Palace is one of the most underrated attractions within The Kremlin. However, as part of the official residence of the Russian President, much of it is off-limits to snap-happy tourists.

That said, there’s still plenty to be seen in the accessible areas by joining a group tour: a beautiful white-stone carved staircase; curved, decorated, and painted ceilings; and an enchanting low-vaulted Antechamber with lancet windows.

The Red Square

As we move away from the Kremlin, our next stop is the most photographed, picturesque public area in the country.

Flanked by gorgeous, colorful towers and buildings, the Red Square is the most famous square in all of Russia — and one that’s steeped in history, patriotism, and communist symbolism.

Home to some of Moscow’s greatest landmarks including St Basil’s Cathedral (featuring its iconic onion domes), Lenin Mausoleum, GUM department store (an architectural masterpiece that is the most famous shopping mall in Russia), The State History Museum, and more, it’s not just a sight to see in Moscow but also one that has been seen by hundreds of millions from around the world.

11 – Make your way inside St. Basil’s Cathedral | Red Square

St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow

Built back in the early 1500s, this quirky-looking, 65-meter-tall Orthodox church is so unique and detailed that it’s earned its place as one of 16 UNESCO cultural sites in Russia — and, thanks to many Hollywood productions like Bond: Skyfall (2012), has only continued to increase in fame.

Its exterior boasts multi-colored domes crowned with golden onion top spires. Meanwhile, inside, you’ll find nine small, separate chapels, and plenty of decorated walls and windows — all best viewed as part of a walking tour of Red Square.

12 – Visit the State Historical Museum | Red Square

State Historical Museum, Moscow

One of seven museums that can be found around the expansive Red Square, the State Historical Museum is one of Moscow’s most revered.

Housed in a neoclassical building (the same as GUM), it features more than 4 million items relating to Russian history — making it so vast and incredible that you’ll need at least two hours inside to see just a fraction.

While you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Marshal Georgy Zhukov Monument, a towering horse-riding statue of arguably the most famous and heroic Soviet military commander of WWII, which can be found in front of the museum.

13 – Shop till you drop at GUM | Red Square

GUM department store, Moscow

The official state department store of Russia, having opened in 1893 and become one of Moscow’s most iconic attractions for shopaholics over the years, is known for its gorgeous architecture that looks more like a palace than anything else.

Entering through its massive golden doors, you’ll be surprised to find an extensive shopping center with more than 100 luxury and world-renowned brands of clothing and accessories for men, women, and youngsters.

Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, stop into the Gastronom №1 for a bite to eat or take a stroll through its corridors to appreciate the building’s history and beauty.

14 – Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum | Red Square

Lenin's Mausoleum, Moscow

Another iconic Red Square attraction is Lenin’s Mausoleum, a small yet foreboding building that houses the embalmed corpse of Communist leader Vladimir Lenin (who led Russia through the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917).

Opened in 1930 after his death and standing at more than 12 meters tall, it presents as both a unique and macabre site — and, considering the life-like nature of the body, certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.

Note: Entrance is free of charge, but expect to be searched by security before being allowed in.

15 – Ride the Moscow Metro, enjoying the beautiful stations along the way

Moscow Metro, Russia

As we leave the Red Square, the next cab off the rank is Moscow’s unbelievable artistic Metro network (rivaled only in beauty by that of Stockholm). Constructed between the 1930s and 1950s, its stations were built by hand with a wide range of artistic themes — from socialist realist to Slavic pagan.

Tips: The best way to experience them is as part of a Moscow Metro tour, which can be booked online. However, if you prefer exploring solo, then make sure to visit the Mayakovskaya Metro Station which is known for its seemingly endless archways.

You may also check out Dostoyevskaya, named after a famous writer with murals depicting his stories. The Ploshchad Revolutsii Metro Station is another option where a handful of Socialist statues provide a wonderful contrast to the red marble arches.

Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov

WikiLeaks cables: Moscow mayor presided over 'pyramid of corruption'

The US ambassador to Russia claimed that Moscow's veteran mayor Yuri Luzhkov sat on top of a "pyramid of corruption" involving the Kremlin, Russia's police force, its security service, political parties and crime groups.

The 74-year-old has subsequently been sacked as mayor by President Dmitry Medvedev, after the Kremlin-controlled media broadcast allegations of corruption aimed at him and his billionaire wife, Yelena Baturina, who heads a construction company called Inteko. The couple have vehemently denied the accusations as "total rubbish" designed to make Luzhkov "lose his balance".

In a leaked secret cable sent in February, the US ambassador John Beyrle gives a forensic account of Moscow's "murky" criminal world, alleging a shadowy connection between bureaucrats, gangsters and even prosecutors.

According to Beyrle corruption in Moscow was "pervasive" . "Luzhkov is at the top of the pyramid," he claimed. He told the US state department: "Luzhkov oversees a system in which it appears that almost everyone at every level is involved in some form of corruption or criminal behaviour."

Russia's well-developed system of bribe-taking was ubiquitous, Beyrle said. In the absence of laws that worked, Luzhkov – as well as other mayors and governors – paid off "key insiders in the Kremlin". Officials had even been spotted entering the building carrying large suitcases, presumed to be "full of money".

The ambassador wrote his cable in response to speculation that Luzhkov, the capital's charismatic mayor since 1992, was about to lose his job. When Medvedev ignominiously dismissed him in September, the Russian president said he had lost confidence in Luzhkov.

Most analysts believe the firing had little to do with the allegations of corruption but was linked to a power struggle between Luzhkov and Russia's federal leadership, which Luzhkov eventually lost.

In a section called "Background on Moscow's criminal world", Beyrle asserted bluntly: "The Moscow city government's direct links to criminality have led some to call it 'dysfunctional', and to assert that the government operates more as a kleptocracy than a government".

"Criminal elements enjoy a 'krysha' [a term from the criminal/mafia world literally meaning 'roof' or protection] that runs through the police, the federal security service (FSB), ministry of internal affairs (MVD) and the prosecutor's office, as well as throughout the Moscow city government bureaucracy.

"Analysts identify a three-tiered structure in Moscow's criminal world. Luzhkov is at the top. The FSB, MVD and militia are at the second level. Finally ordinary criminals and corrupt inspectors are at the lowest level."

Under this system, all businesses in Moscow were forced to pay bribes to law enforcement structures, in a virtual parallel tax system: "Police and MVD collect money from small businesses while the FSB collects from big businesses." An FSB krysha was the most sought after, Beyrle said, with the FSB protecting Moscow's top organised crime gang.

This sleaze went all the way to the top of Russian power, Beyrle said. Bribes were distributed upwards under the "power vertical", Vladimir Putin's bureaucratic hierarchy. He quoted one source who said: "Everything depends on the Kremlin … Luzhkov, as well as many mayors and governors, pay off key insiders in the Kremlin."

The same source alleged that officials went into the Kremlin "with large suitcases and bodyguards", and speculated that the "suitcases are full of money". Another source disagreed. He pointed out it was simpler to pay bribes "via a secret account in Cyprus" – an offshore route popular with rich Russians.

The ambassador offers the most detailed and apparently authoritative account so far of corruption in the Russian state and its security agencies. He cites Transparency International's 2009 survey which confirms Russia as the world's most corrupt major economy. The report estimates bribery costs Russia $300bn (£190bn) a year, about 18% of its gross domestic product.

Beyrle also reported allegations about Baturina, who heads the largest construction company in Moscow. After Luzhkov entered office, his wife became Russia's wealthiest woman, amassing a fortune put at $1.8bn. Since her husband's sacking she has spent most of her time abroad, with the couple's teenage daughters moving to London.Luzhkov's dubious friends and associates, the US alleged, included Vyacheslav Ivankov – a recently murdered and notorious Russian mafia boss known as Yaponchik – and other "reputedly corrupt" Duma deputies. "[Source removed] said that the Moscow government has links to many different criminal groups and it regularly takes cash bribes from businesses."

According to Beyrle, the same system of bribery worked in Russia's provinces: "The governors collect money based on bribes, almost resembling a tax system, throughout their regions." As in Moscow, businesses paid off the FSB, the interior ministry and the militia who "all have their distinctive money collection systems". (Moscow police heads also reportedly had a "secret war chest of money … used to solve problems that the Kremlin decides, such as rigging elections".)

Deputies in Russia's parliament generally had to buy their seats in government, Beyrle's cable suggested. "They need money to get to the top, but once they are there, their positions become quite lucrative money-making opportunities."

His allegations are likely to be most embarrassing for the Kremlin, after a high-profile campaign by Medvedev against corruption. So far it has shown few results.

Beyrle noted that Putin and Medvedev faced a tricky dilemma when deciding Luzhkov's fate . He was a "trusted deliverer of votes" for United Russia, Putin's pro-Kremlin party, Beyrle suggested. Against this, the Kremlin had to weigh up what the ambassador claimed to be "Luzhkov's connections to the criminal world".

Another cable sought to lift the lid on Luzhkov's business empire, much of it acquired using city funds to invest in "less than transparent" projects sealing agreements with former Soviet countries including Moldova, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The projects deliberately promoted Luzhkov's "nationalist foreign policy", it reported. Luzhkov channelled cash to separatist pro-Russian movements in Ukraine and the Baltics. "This was 'at the behest of the Russian government, thereby giving the government of Russia plausible deniability when accused of funding certain political parties."

He also struck deals in the separatist regions of neighbouring countries, including South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia, and Transnistria in Moldova. In Kosovo he used Moscow city funds to build housing for ethnic Serbian refugees, while in Bulgaria he bought beach resorts on the Black Sea for city hall staff.

"The Moscow city government has cultivated its influence in far-flung Russian regions as well as in foreign countries, ostensibly for the benefit of its citizens but to a greater extent for the city's well-connected business elites," the cable concluded.
