Nile Jewel - 5* Cruise Tour

Nile Jewel - 5* Cruise

I cannot even begin to explain how happy we were with this tour. From the moment we booked, the company was extremely accommodating and responsive, answering all of our questions and helping us make additional arrangements for extra nights, tours, etc. There was some safety concerns going into it, but once we arrived we never felt unsafe. Everything was executed flawlessly. The moment we landed in Cairo they had everything under control, from meeting us at the airport and helping us get our visas and exchange our money until it was time to catch our flight home.. they didn't miss a beat. We laughed to ourselves a few times because it seemed they had anticipated what we were going to need before we even asked about it. We had a great group and our guide, Ramez, was a walking Wikipedia of Egyptian history. Having someone with that amount of knowledge really elevated the entire experience and made us appreciate what we were seeing even more. I'm not going to lie, I was exhausted by the end of it. 😆 But it was 100% worth it. This definitely wasn't a vacation, it was an adventure - and one I'd do all over again.

Egypt is amazing, but best of all was Mo Fahrid as our guide. His skill at negotiating and managing all aspects of the tour was superb. Watching other guides at the Cairo Museum made me value his expert knowledge even more! Any possible contingency was anticipated and solved. Extras that we requested were delivered. Mo’s personal service made every day a delight. This was a dream of an experience.

This was without a doubt an absolutely perfect experience. The guide Anas could not have been more gracious, informative and knowledgeable. All of the stops were stunning and the pleasant shoreline views along the way made the whole experience exciting and charming. The meals were fantastic and everyone aboard was there to help. The day tours were exactly as described and some surprisingly fun activities on the boat only enhanced the experience. I highly recommend taking this cruise package.

Excellent trip, very well organized, and amazing itinerary. Got a few early mornings but totally WORTH it. Our CEO Mayer is brilliant, fun, knowledgeable, and really accommodated everyone's needs. Our group has an amazing vibe and everyone became good friends in the end. It was less like a trip with strangers but more like a trip with friends. The trip was one of my highlights in 2021!

Excellent tour from start to finish, saw all we wanted to see. Our guide Mina Magda was excellent and very knowledgeable and well informed about everything, also very well presented. He was such a pleasant and positive person and this radiated to everyone on the tour. The hotels were mostly excellent but some had no drinking water in the rooms. Other than that they were fine. Strangely enough I really enjoyed the bus rides through the desert to Luxor and Hurghada, I love remote places. All in all my wife and I really enjoyed the tour and it was also a good time of year to go, not scorching hot.

Reviews of Nile Cruises

It was very informative and educational, but there were a lot of activities packed into the 11 days, leaving hardly any free time.
A variety of experiences both day and night, cruise up the Nile was great, gravity resort was superb, pyramids awesome, lots of temples
One of the good journeys I've taken, it exposed us to a language and culture quite distinct from Western norms. We also witnessed remarkable ancient sites, including Karnak Temple and Abu Simbel, and enjoyed thrilling activities like a hot air balloon ride and snorkeling in the Red Sea.

Many thanks for great information!

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

Cruising the River Nile: Pros, Cons, and Recommendations

cruise down river nile

Angus McComiskey/Getty Images

Traditionally, a Nile cruise was considered the centerpiece of an Egyptian vacation, evoking romantic images of idyllic days spent drifting in luxury between the country's ancient sights . In Victorian times, a Nile cruise was the only way to see some of Egypt 's most outstanding ancient temples. Modern visitors have more options available to them; and while Nile cruises are still popular, some find themselves put off by the idea of being confined on a boat for the majority of their vacation. The river is much busier now than it was in the past, and with more than 200 cruise boats plying their trade, there are lines to get through the locks and to dock at each disembarkation point.

Let's weigh the pros and cons of a Nile cruise so that you can decide whether or not it's a good fit for your visit to Egypt.

What to Expect

Most Nile cruises start in Luxor and visit the popular sites of Esna, Edfu, and Kom Ombo before disembarking in Aswan. Other itineraries fly directly to Aswan and work their way north down the Nile to the same sights. Most cruises will last at least four nights. There are many different vessels to choose from, ranging from traditional paddle steamers (best suited to those that favor history and authenticity) to luxurious modern cruise ships (geared towards those for whom creature comforts are a priority). Your budget and personal preferences will determine which cruise you choose, although opting for a cabin with air-conditioning is advised during the scorching summer months .

Most cruise companies employ the services of an Egyptologist, who will guide your group around the ancient sights you visit along the way. Days start early to avoid the intense heat of the afternoon; and as such, all cruises tend to operate on a similar schedule (which can lead to overcrowding at the docking sites and at the temples themselves). Modern vessels typically have a swimming pool so that you can cool off after your morning explorations; while some provide nightly entertainment in the form of belly dancing shows or themed dress-up evenings. Food on board is usually excellent, ranging from generous buffets to set dinner menus. Make sure to find out what's included before choosing your operator.

Despite the changes brought about by the progression of time, a Nile river cruise is still one of the most popular ways to see Egypt's ancient sights. Part of that is tradition, and part of it is practicality; after all, many of the most famous sites are located directly on the river, making a cruise the easiest way to travel between them. At night, many of the temples and monuments are illuminated, and the sight of them from the water is simply breathtaking. During the day, the rural scenes you'll see whilst traveling from place to place have remained largely unchanged for thousands of years.

Despite the early morning starts (and depending on which vessel you choose), cruises can also be wonderfully relaxing. While sailing, you'll be able to get a sense of the country without having to deal firsthand with the chaotic roads, busy city streets, and persistent hawkers for which Egypt is famous. Although the sites you'll visit along the way are inevitably crowded, arriving in a large group can make some travelers feel more comfortable. You'll also benefit from the knowledge of an expert guide, both in terms of navigating the touts and in terms of understanding the fascinating history of the temples themselves.

For many visitors, the main drawback of a Nile cruise is not the influx of vessels, nor the crowding at the sites (the latter is unavoidable whether you visit them as part of a cruise or not). The main disadvantage is the inflexibility of a cruise; the fact that you have to operate on a set schedule that dictates when you visit a temple, how long you get to spend there, and what you see whilst you're there. If you want to spend more than a few hours exploring the untold wonders of the temple complexes at Luxor, for example, you may wish to travel there independently or with a land-based guide.

These days, overland tours are equally easy to arrange and allow for more flexibility. You can even hire a car or take public transport if you don't want to be part of an organized tour at all. Many cruise itineraries focus solely on the most popular temples, leaving out worthwhile smaller sights like Abydos and Dendera. Alternatively if your time in Egypt is limited, you may prefer to focus on one or two sights rather than spending much of your vacation in transit on the river. The sheer amount of time spent on board can also be a drawback if you're traveling with young children, or if you find out too late that you don't enjoy the company of your fellow cruise mates.

Recommended Cruises

Best Traditional

Audley Travel's five-night itineraries aboard the Steam Ship Sudan offer the last word in exclusivity and Victorian-era refinement. The steamship, which was constructed in 1885 for King Fouad, was the direct inspiration for Agatha Christie's famous novel Death on the Nile and is still decorated in flawless Belle Epoque style. In each of its 18 cabins and five suites, period antiques range from brass beds to vintage telephones. And although the ship is now operated by a hybrid diesel/steam engine for optimum quietness, you can still view the original pistons and paddle wheels. Dining aboard the Steam Ship Sudan includes generous buffet breakfasts and lunches and stately four-course dinners.

Best Luxury

Despite its traditional exterior, the  Oberoi Philae  offers 22 cabins and suites decorated in the same style you might expect from a contemporary 5-star hotel. Each one includes a pillow-top mattress, high-speed WiFi, a multi-pressure shower, and 24-hour butler service. If you're feeling particularly decadent, splurge on a suite with its own private terrace, complete with a sun lounger and heated whirlpool tub. There are two restaurants to choose from, one for gourmet international cuisine, the other for light meals and beverages at the edge of the ship's temperature-controlled outdoor swimming pool. Other luxuries range from a movie theater and dance floor to a salon and spa treatment rooms.

Best Budget

Budget travelers should consider booking a felucca cruise like the ones offered by On The Go Tours . Feluccas are traditional Egyptian sailboats, the like of which have plied their trade on the Nile for centuries. They are wind-powered and as such have a more fluid itinerary; while their smaller size allows them to dock at places of interest that don't have the infrastructure for larger cruise ships. There is no luxury on a felucca cruise; you will sleep on deck in a sleeping bag that you bring with you; the food is basic and amenities are limited to a toilet and shower on the accompanying support boat. However, the experience is probably one of the most authentic (and certainly the cheapest) on the river.

Best for Families

Being trapped on a boat for an extended period of time can be challenging for families, especially if they include young children. This 10-day itinerary from Abercrombie & Kent gives you the best of both worlds with some land-based adventures in addition to a four-night Nile cruise. Your journey from Luxor to Aswan aboard Sanctuary Sun Boat IV is accompanied by an A&K Child Activity Coordinator whose job it is to keep your little ones entertained en route. The itinerary also includes plenty of interactive, hands-on fun that doubles as cultural education, from felucca sailing trips to camel rides, henna painting, and bread baking. A themed dinner and onboard costume party lets the kids dress up in traditional robes known as galabeyas .

The Last Word

Ultimately, whether or not a Nile cruise is the right choice for you depends on your personal preferences. If you like the idea of a cruise , the sheer variety of available options means that you're likely to find a vessel and/or operator to suit your needs. If the drawbacks listed above sound like deal-breakers for you, you're better off saving your money and organizing an alternative option instead.

Luxury Egypt tours

DAHABIYA OR CRUISER? YOU GET TO CHOOSE WITH 7 NIGHT NILE CRUISES

7 night nile cruise

The first thing to consider when choosing from the different 7 night Nile cruises, is just what sort of vessel you might prefer.

There are the small and luxurious dahabiyas, which are gorgeous wooden boats powered by the wind and featuring enormous sails that dance in the breeze. They can be found with all of the finest, luxurious amenities but also hearken back to the early days of Egyptian travel. Wooden decks, open-air dining and lounging areas at the top decks, and elegant staterooms are all part of the experience.

There are also the larger, modern cruise ships with multiple decks, every possible amenity and even options such as salons, pools and more.

Choosing your preferred vessel is the first step in narrowing down the options in the many 7 night Nile cruises, and then you have to consider the itinerary that appeals to you the most.

7 NIGHT NILE RIVER CRUISE ITINERARIES

7 nights nile cruise

Pharaoh Rameses II Statue in Luxor Temple.

As already noted, most of the 7 night Nile cruises take travelers between Luxor and Aswan, but there are some different ways this is done. You can find 7 night Nile cruises that depart from Aswan and head to Luxor, and you also find the reverse. You can also find 7 night Nile cruises that return you to your starting point (i.e. Luxor – Aswan – Luxor).

In addition to how you explore the sites during 7 night Nile cruises, remember that most of these journeys can be integrated into a wider tour or exploration of Egypt. For example, there are Lake Nasser cruises that could be an ideal way to begin your visit to Egypt. You might cruise the lake for several days and finish in Aswan. From there, you can book one of the 7 night Nile cruises departing from Aswan and heading north (down river) to Luxor.

After exploring Luxor, you can book air or train passage to Cairo and continue taking in the many sites in and around the city, and more.

Yet, just choosing one of the 7 night Nile cruises can tick off many of the must-see locations on any traveler’s Egyptian “bucket list”. This is because the stretch of river between Aswan and Luxor is home to many famous and enchanting sites. A common itinerary, if departing from the northern point of Luxor, would include:

  • Luxor – Sitting on both sides of the river, it is home to the ancient Egyptian capital of Thebes. On the eastern bank you can tour the famed temples of Karnak and Luxor, opting for early morning or evening experiences to make the very most of the sites. On the western side of the river are the world-famous locations like the Valley of the Kings, Deir el-Bahri, the Temple of Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon and the famed Medinet Habu.
  • Esna – Also popular in many itineraries for 7 night Nile cruises, it is an idyllic stopping point between Luxor and the hugely famous sites of Edfu and Kom Ombo. It is also home to the stunning Temple of Khnum.
  • Edfu – One of the largest and most well-preserved of all temples in Egypt, Edfu Temple. Dedicated to Horus, it is a beautiful site and close to Gabal Selsela, a temple carefully relocated to protect it from the Nile’s waters.
  • Kom Ombo – Perhaps one of the most famous temples because of its “double” design, it is a very popular stop on most 7 night Nile cruises. Travelers like to explore this site once famed for its sacred crocodiles and for its temples dedicated to Horus the Elder and Sobek the crocodile god.
  • Aswan – As the starting or finishing point for many premium 7 night Nile cruises, there is much to see and do here. From touring the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk to paying a visit to Elephantine Island, Kitchener’s Island (often aboard a charming felucca), the Nubian village, and even the appealing night market, you can find an endless array of sites to see during a visit here.

Yet, the cruises don’t just set sail and stop to allow you to visit the sites. The best cruises also ensure you are accompanied by knowledgeable experts. There are some cruises with trained Egyptologists, professional historians, famed authors and more. They will always accompany the group to shore, lead them through the different destinations, and offer insightful commentary and lectures about the amazing sights before them. Some will also provide lectures on board ship in order to ensure visitors get the very most from every stop.

Do you get free time? Absolutely! Taking longer cruises of 7 nights, or more, means more time at each site and room in the itinerary to explore the different sites, even savoring some meals at local restaurants or doing some shopping in local markets.

NOTHING LIKE A NILE CRUISE IN EGYPT

Whether you can dedicate that full week of travel to a Nile cruise, or have to keep your journey a bit shorter, you will be astonished by the amount you can see and do. Of course, there are options for even longer journeys, with truly luxurious cruises departing from Cairo and making their way all of the way down to Aswan!

Regardless of the length of time, though, there is nothing that can compare to a premium Nile cruise. If you want to wake to the sounds of farmers singing to their cattle, kids splashing in the waters at the shore, and the beauty of a sunrise over the ancient landscape, then it is a cruise for you…why not make your plans today?

Journey through Antiquity with a Cruise down the Nile River

Egypt is a fascinating place with a long and colorful history. From their large and varied pantheon of gods and goddesses, to their beautiful artwork, cultural and scientific innovations, the ancient Egyptians were one of the most revered civilizations the world has ever seen.

The blend of cultures in Egypt today is still just as fascinating, and millions of people come to the area every year to experience all that the Land of Pharaohs has to offer.

The best ways to see a significant slice of Egypt is by booking all inclusive Egypt vacations that include a cruise. Many people don’t know just how many great reasons there are to take a cruise down the Nile River. The following are just a few of the top reasons:

A Nile River Cruise is Unique

Those who come to Egypt for the first time, as well as those who have been there many times before, will likely want to find a unique way to enjoy their vacation in Egypt , and a unique way see all of the country’s most famous ancient sites. A cruise down the Nile River is not only a unique way to see the country, but also a luxurious way.

Many people who come to Egypt venture into the desert in hot caravans, or they spend a lot of times on buses that can become uncomfortable after several days of travel, especially if you are not used to traveling in such a manner.

A cruise down the Nile River on the other hand allows people to have considerably more space and freedom of movement. Keep in mind that overwhelming majority of Nile cruise ships are essentially luxury hotels on water.

Unlike their ocean going cousins that carry thousands of different passengers, the ships that sail along the Nile River are far smaller. This means that you will share the ship with far fewer passengers, and this can provide a closer, more intimate setting for the vacation. This is particularly true in the case of Dahabiya Nile cruises , since these boats typically only have around ten to twelve cabins.

Meticulously Structured Egypt Nile Tours

The best way to experience a cruise down the Nile River is by booking one of our high quality Nile cruise holidays being offered these days. These cruise holiday packages include tours in Cairo; tours in Luxor and Aswan, and guided tours to a number of ancient sites located between Aswan and Luxor. Our tours also include local Expert guides, ensuring that you get to see many of the best attractions in Egypt , while also having a great time doing so.

Fine Dining and 5-Star Luxury Accommodations

You can be assured that your cruise ship will have world class chefs and staff on hand to offer you some of the finest local cuisine and international fare in the country. Everyone will be able to find something to satisfy his or her appetite. You will also enjoy fantastic accommodation, and you can be 100% certain that all cabins are spotlessly clean and exceptionally comfortable. And, for those who want an even greater level of comfort and luxury, our luxury Nile River cruises are the ideal choice

Nile cruises generally last between 4 and 8 days, depending on which type of cruise you opt for. They are also flexible to a certain degree, because while the ship will make a number of sightseeing stops during your cruise down the Nile River, you’re under no obligation to take part in any on-shore excursions. If you would prefer stay on the ship while other passengers go and explore, you are welcome to do so.

Cruise Down The Nile River

Regardless of your budget and time constraints, at Egypt Tours Plus we can provide you with the ultimate Nile Cruise Holiday that includes an unforgettable cruise down the Nile River. Top five stops on a cruise down the Nile in Egypt

Jul 28, 2014 • 6 min read

cruise down river nile

In-the-know travellers are seizing the opportunity to visit Egypt’s famous tombs and temples while there are no crowds – and the best way to do it is by following the mighty River Nile on a cruise.

Felucca sailboats on River Nile, Aswan, Egypt. Image by Peter Adams / Getty Images

Taking a cruise on the Nile is a time-honoured way to explore Egypt . For centuries, travellers have sailed stretches of the world’s longest river, finding the unexpected sights of river life every bit as thrilling as the tombs and temples on the schedule.

Nothing is predictable here. One minute you might be admiring a lone fisherman rowing slowly home, oars cutting cleanly into the water. The next a couple of rogue teenagers have pulled their speedboat up against your cruise ship and are tossing bags of scarves – and a bit of cheeky banter – through your window in the hope of making a sale.

Sometimes on deck at dawn, the breeze feels fresh and clean and everything is wet, from the dewy handrails to shining green foliage on the riverbanks. On other mornings, all you can see are dry, yellow hills and the air is hot and heavy with dust.

And then there are the daily glimpses of men sitting on plastic chairs in the blazing sun, enjoying their morning tea and shisha pipes, bougainvillea flowers, sugarcane and wheat fields, family-run farms, mud huts, kids waving as the boats go by, an illuminated minaret in dusk light – this is the Egypt that’s not on the itinerary, but would be worth taking a cruise for alone.

But of course that's just the start of the experience. From the vivid artwork inside Valley of the Kings’ tombs to the perfectly carved hieroglyphics at Luxor Temple , all the key tour stops between Luxor and Aswan are within a short drive of the Nile’s banks.

A few years ago, these sights were constantly surrounded by busloads of tourists, but because of Egypt's political turmoil, many are now all but deserted. There is a visible armed security presence, which some travellers may find disconcerting, but the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) considers it safe to travel through this stretch of the Nile (see below for more information).

In fact not only is it a valuable time to visit in terms of helping Egypt get back on its feet, but the lack of crowds at these epic monuments mean it's also incredibly rewarding. Here are five of the best places to visit on a Nile cruise.

Karnak Temple. Image by Irakli Shavgulidze

Karnak Temple

Most cruises begin at Luxor , so one of your first ports of call is probably going to be Karnak Temple . And what a place to start. A forest of intricately carved pillars, obelisks and walls, the sheer scale of this ancient temple complex gives a shivers-down-your-spine sense of timeless power. The main area was thought of as the earthly home of Egyptian sun god Amun-Re, and the temple here is the largest religious building ever built.

Look out for: symbolism

Ancient Egyptian artists were big on natural symbolism, and you’ll see examples of this in almost all the sites you visit. Karnak has some particularly intriguing examples – the 134 columns in the hyperstyle hall represent palm trees, the floor represents the River Nile, pylons symbolise mountains and the ceiling shows Egypt’s skies, full of stars at night.

Sunset at Luxor Temple. Image by Prin Adulyatham / Shutterstock

Luxor Temple

The other major temple in Luxor is also primarily dedicated to Amun-Re, along with gods Mut and Khonsu (known as the Theban triad). At the entrance sit two enormous seated figures of Ramses II, one of the last pharaohs to have work done on this temple. One of the highlights of a visit to this temple is the chance to take a close look at the beautiful carvings of people clapping, beating drums, dancing and performing acrobatics, while boats are carried to the Nile under the shouted instructions of captains – the energy of these scenes practically bounces off the walls.

Look out for: religious art

There’s evidence of four religions here, left behind from different eras in the site’s long history. The temple itself was dedicated to Ancient Egyptian gods. In one corner, there are the remains of frescoes, belonging to the Roman Imperial cult. Islam is also represented, as Abu El Haggag mosque sits on top of part of the temple’s ruins. Finally, Coptic Christians once had a church here, and the remains of some pillars can still be seen in the Temple of Montu.

Wall painting and decoration of the tomb: ancient Egyptian gods and hieroglyphs in wall painting. Image by Vladimir Melnik / Shutterstock

Valley of the Kings

You’ve probably been reading about the tomb of boy pharaoh Tutankhamen and its stash of hidden treasures in the Valley of the Kings since your primary school days. Here’s your chance to see the actual chamber for yourself. You can also visit the recently opened replica nearby, which was launched to mitigate some of the damage that mass tourism is doing to the original, and has been getting rave reviews for its detail and authentic feel. Move on to the grand chambers where Ramses IX, Ramses II, Merenptah and many more were buried, to admire the hieroglyphics and intriguing scenes carved into the walls.

Look out for: vivid paintings

Many of the Ancient Egyptian temples in the region have just the smallest flecks of paintwork left, so it’s almost a shock to see how bright the paintings are inside the tombs, where they have been hidden from the sun for so many years. Bright paint was made from chalk, charcoal, ochre and malachite, mixed with eggwhite and gum and then brushed with beeswax to varnish and protect it. And protect it did: the birds, snakes, boats and many other symbols here are still in such popping shades of red, yellow, blue and white that they look as if they were daubed just yesterday.

Temple of Edfu. Image by Luis Davilla / Getty Images

Temple of Edfu

This huge temple in Edfu is dedicated to Horus, the Falcon God, and you’ll see the image of a man with a falcon’s head representing him throughout the temple. Falcons were worshipped because they don’t eat dead flesh, so they were considered noble. It’s one of the best preserved temples in Egypt, with antechambers and halls to explore, as well as the inner sanctuary, which still contains the polished-granite shrine that once housed the gold cult statue of Horus.

Look out for: the courtyard

Don’t be tempted to rush through the courtyard to get to the temple, as there’s so much to see here, particularly the wall carvings. Notice the sails of the boats, which are pictured rolled up if they face in the direction of the Nile's flow, and open in the other direction. Once, this space was the only part of the site members of the public were allowed visit. During the the day it was so bright outside that they couldn't see what was happening inside the temple, which only the privileged few had access to.

Kom Ombo temple at sunset on the Nile in Egypt. Image by Christian Delbert / Shutterstock

A Nile cruise just wouldn’t be complete without paying homage to the crocodiles. Do as the Ancient Egyptians did and pay your respects at Kom Ombo , a double temple that's devoted half to Horus and half to crocodile god Sobek. This stretch of the river used to be infested with vicious crocs, preventing locals from using the water to wash or cook – this temple was a way of placating them.

Look out for: doubling up

There’s two of everything from courts and halls to sanctuaries rooms in this temple to show one god wasn’t favoured more than the other.

Travel safety

T here are no FCO warnings against travelling through the stretch of the Nile from Luxor to Aswan, nor any of the stops mentioned in this article. However, it is always advisable to check the latest advice before travelling.

An amazing trip on the Nile. We loved every minute of it. We felt truly taken care of. Everyone made our trip very exciting and special.

What a fabulous trip. For those not familiar with a dahabiya (and I was not either), it is a most comfortable way to visit the great sights of Egypt.

Steigenberger ship on the Nile

Myself and a friend stayed three nights on the ‘Steigenberger Legacy’ Nile cruise ship in April and travelled from Aswan to Luxor, visiting Kom Ombo and Edfu en route. Pros: -Helpful staff, apart from Reception staff. -Welcome lemonade drink. -Immaculately clean boat. -Free WiFi. -Afternoon tea - top deck. -Open-air paddling and dip pool - top deck. -Lounge Bar with plentiful upholstered seating and dance floor. -Egyptian music evening. -Restaurant - superb, tasty and well-presented food. -Cabin with twin beds, bedside tables & lamps, telephone, chairs & table, fridge, mirrors, cupboard, safe. En suite with walk-in shower, toilet, sink. Cons: -More information about the ship at check-in would be useful. -All drinking water chargeable, including breakfast, although cheap to purchase. -Room - no kettle. -Checkout 8am

This was our second Nile Cruise and this time we were on the MS Royal Viking which was probably slightly better than our previous cruise in that the sun deck was nicer. I think you have to review the boats offered before you go as some are much better than others but we had booked through Broadway Travel with Meeting Point the agent locally and both trips were good. The Royal Viking was nicely turned out, spotlessly clean, lovely staff and the buffet food was good. I preferred the round tables of our last boat to the oblong ones here, but that is not a criticism. The bar was nicer on this one. The cabins are well appointed and it is very nice travelling along the Nile watching the banks from the sun deck or your room. The entertainment in the evening is fine and the music provision in the bar was much better than our last trip. Although we have been before we still did the main excursions which were excellently guided by Ahmed, who added to our knowledge and had some nice tales. Tip though depending on how your cruise goes will impact on your itinerary. Last time we went we did the Brookes Hospital buggy and really enjoyed it but it was mid afternoon, so we went again but this was late afternoon in the middle of Luxor rush hour, bad idea. The horses are amazing but I was quite scared by traffic. So if your trip is earlier in the day and goes into the side streets do it other wise don’t. Also don’t go on your own unless it is a Brooke’s Hospital ride from their base as some of the other horses are badly treated. Others mention Abu Simbel, if you haven’t been before it is a must. As we had we opted to stay in Aswan and had lunch in The Old Cataract Hotel which was fantastic, then we visited the local bazar but it is generally very touristy. Also we did not do the Nubian Village, last time so we did this time. The village visit itself is ok but the Felucca trip down to it through the nature reserve was great and the bird life is terrific. The Royal Viking has a private mooring in Luxor which is a way out of town. If your boat docks in Luxor you can step off and explore the bazar which you can’t do from the RV. If you have not been before, go prepared. Water is charged on the Boats, all of them. You pay a gratuity on arrival, but that excludes the Egyptologist and the coach drivers which is not always clear. WiFi is charged for, the system uses the same infrastructure across all the boats so there is contention but generally you can get by. If you want All inclusive book before you go, to upgrade on arrival is simply not a goer the costs are much higher, you couldn’t drink that much. We paid for drinks at the end and it was perfectly ok. The Egyptian wine and Gin is fine, cocktails a bit mixed. We found it all perfectly acceptable and cringed a bit when we heard moaning. The holiday is amazing value, the people lovely and the sights amazing. We then went on to Hurghada for 6 nights.

We've recently returned from a week's Nile cruise on the MS Esadora which we booked through Classic Holidays. What a fabulous time we had! The boat itself is small and certainly not one of the fanciest of the Nile river boats but it was immaculately clean and well appointed. The lads cleaning the cabins did a fabulous job and made us laugh every day with their towel sculpture! All of the staff were fantastic: nothing was too much trouble and they were charming and attentive throughout. The restaurant was pleasant and, although there wasn't an enormous choice of dishes, everything was nicely cooked and tasty. We particularly enjoyed the fantastic range of salads and the Egyptian specialities. Thanks to the fantastic waiters who kept us entertained! We were kept busy with trips every day and these were extremely efficiently organised by Orbital Travel. Our guide (John) was fabulous - knowledgeable and good humoured. We had a fantastic time exploring amazing places. In between the visits, we spent time on the deck, relaxing by the small pool which was really pleasant. It was particularly nice as the boat was sailing and we could see the Nile's banks and the people living there. We didn't take the drinks package on the boat. Drinks were quite expensive - but not outrageous - so we were happy with our decision. There were a couple of niggles - it would be nice to have a bottle of water in the cabin each day and the bathroom drains had a very strange smell in one of our cabins - but overall these were massively outweighed by the positives. We had a fantastic trip and couldn't recommend this cruise highly enough.

Nile Cruise is a must, at least once. I did it, twice over 30 years.. but I wanted my children to have the experience too Every cruise has 4 elements -The quality of the ship and rooms -Service and Staff -The food quality and finally the excursions tour guide We got lucky this time with our ship Esmeralda, is an excellent ship in all categories, almost. We just got unlucky with our tour guide Medhat. He wanted to upsell additional excursions at double the price. It started with hot air balloon where he said the cost is $120, a quick internet search showed it was $65. The sound and light show at $50, where the internet showed it was $13. So we lost confidence from the 1st day, Don't be shy to ask your tour operator to change the guide. We just got unlucky, we have seen the other 4 groups on the ship very happy with their tour guide. Some of them will take you to an alabaster factory, Don't waste time there, and don't buy anything, these are over priced. You could buy in Aswan at half the price or in Cairo. If you are interested in any tours which are not on the standard program , you shout add it in your program in advance, and get a quotation from the office The food quality was surprisingly good. We were on Club-Med Turquoise two weeks before, they are known to have good food. But Esmerelda was even much better. Not a huge variety, but great quality. Many thanks to the chef !! The rooms actually better than the photos on their website. Good size, very clean, lovely bathroom Service was excellent. They clean the rooms twice every day !! Everyone was very polite and helpful. There was a bit of a mess in our 7 rooms reservation, but they did sort it out quickly. I would strongly recommend Esmeralda. It is great value for money. Don't pay double for the extra large rooms with balconies on the other luxury ships like Farah and some others. Nile cruise prices vary a lot depending on the ship and the season. It can get very very hot in the summer. The ships also vary a lot although most of them claim to be 5 stars, but some are not even 3 stars Price vary a lot from $400 to $1400 per person in a double room Remember, Nile cruise is Not like a typical cruise. You hardly spend any time in your room, just to crash between excursions. They kill you with excursions, every day from early morning. You don't want to miss any excursion. They are very interesting and, if you stay behind, you will find your room sandwiched between two ship, as they dock the ships next to each other, as you can read on the other reviews. You will practically have no useful windows much of the time have to keep the blank-out on much of the time. You only enjoy the lovely Nile view while the ship is cursing. The total cruising time is 6+6+4 hrs , some of it , is over night. But when ship is docked, you can use your window b I would very much prefer the 4 days program from Luxor to Aswan, over the 3 days return on the other direction, Specially on winter time. The wind direction is predominantly north west. Going against the cold wind in winter is not recommended, but welcomed in the hot summer of Egypt. Also the 3 nights program is really over packed. You will be on your feet for 12 hrs every day, very tiring Egyptian temples are in the desert. You may need to shower after every excursion, twice a day. Also pack a mosquito repellant and lot of sunblock Finally, a good tip for booking any Nile cruise. Try to book with the owners directly. We spent hours and hours trying to book with agents. They always want to push you towards they ship that give them max commissions. The owners of Esmeralda is Planet tours

Beautiful sights but unfortunately people here think you are a walking ATM: they harass and follow you, you get a different guide at each temple so you have to pay each of them. And they even tell you how much they expect you to tip. I felt like guides didn’t care about me or about giving me a decent tour, they were just after money. Such a shame because the sights were beautiful but the people killed it for me

On a recent Nile cruise on board the MS Esadora , I purchased a silver cartouche from the jeweller on board , I chose the one with a black background as it made the hieroglyphs stand out more . I was thrilled with my purchase , but after only two weeks the black background turned to a muddy brown colour and then started to flake away , I contacted Classic holidays who we had booked the cruise through and they contacted the boat on my behalf , I sent photos as requested also my contact details that the boat had requested so that the jeweller could contact me directly . That was three weeks ago and the boat nor the jeweller has bothered to get in touch with me , despite many other follow up e mails. I have now given up all hope that they will ever contact me and can now only hope that my reviews on various websites will at least give other passengers on the boat pause for thought when making a purchase . Jewellery is an expensive purchase and I can only advise others not to purchase on board MS Esadora or indeed any of the Orbital travel boats as I expect that they all use the same jewellery makers on shore . I hope that this review saves others the same disappointment that I experienced

The best mother-daughter trips tend to have a Goldilocks element to them: They’re not too romantic or too metropolitan; they don’t call for too many logistics—travel or otherwise—but they’re not boring; they’re not all-or-nothing: buzzy or sleepy, business or pleasure. But rather, they’re just like motherhood is: just right . The best mother-daughter jaunts blend a little bit of everything: great cities , historic museums, delicious food , and the best company.

From a cruise down the Nile to a long weekend in Savannah , Georgia, here are 15 mother-daughter trips for travelers of all interests, budgets, and ages. Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

cruise down river nile

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

cruise down river nile

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

cruise down river nile

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

cruise down river nile

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

cruise down river nile

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

cruise down river nile

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

cruise down river nile

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
