David Helbock's Random Control: Tour D'Horizon from Brubeck to Zawinul

David Helbock has proved, with each new record, that he is not only one of the most gifted pianists, but also one of the most important young musicians to come emerge from Austria; indeed Europe too. There are many reasons for this. He is unafraid to push the envelope as a pianist, playing with majestic technique and expression on the keyboard and with considerable invention inside the piano as well. His writing is sublime and never fails to surprise and when he plays the music of others you never know what to expect because of his chameleonic character always emerges as he interprets the music of his peers and elders in each new studio or live performance. This one on Tour D’Horizon from Brubeck to Zawinul is no exception.

david helbock tour d'horizon

Also, it bears mention that every once and a while a musician stops to pay homage to the elders who have inspired him. However, many times – especially recently – tributes turn out to be rather dull and although technically excellent, they are uninspired. But Mr Helbock’s tribute to music from Brubeck to Zawinul is full of surprise. In 1978, Heiner Stadler created perhaps the most iconic tribute music ever, with his A Tribute to Bird and Monk and while “tribute music” made ever since in homage to Jazz ancestors may never quite equal that 1978 recording, this one by David Helbock’s Random Control from Brubeck to Zawinul seems to have been created with a similar daring. It certainly strikes one as being almost as memorable.

The wonderful, haunting beauty of Abdullah Ibrahim’s “African Marketplace”, Josef Zawinul’s “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” and the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s “Take Five” – well, Paul Desmond’s actually – might never be repeated again after this recording. Neither will the wit and genius of the group’s re-invention of Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man” (the Headhunters version, which features some breathtaking work on sousaphone by Mr Bär, who alternates his blowing with quite magical beat-boxing, while Mr Broger also dazzles on soprano and tenor saxophones). Also unforgettable (probably for an eternity) are these beautifully sculpted versions of the adagio movement of Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez” and Chick Corea’s response in “Spain”; the sustained inventions of both are dazzling and it is also a stroke of bold genius to place them back to back on the disc.

Best of all, of course, is the pianism of David Helbock. His is a magical and mysterious relationship with the keyboard; one in which between the way each finger depresses each piano key and the effect that has on the complex mechanics of the instrument is a masterclass in careful (not at all “random” in this case) control of nuance and ineffable beauty.

Track list – 1: African Marketplace; 2: Seven Days of Falling; 3: Concierto de Aranjuez – Adagio; 4: Spain; 5: In a Sentimental Mood; 6: Mercy, Mercy, Mercy; 7: Blue in Green; 8: Watermelon Man; 9: My Song; 10: Utviklingssang; 11: Bolivia; 12: Take Five

Personnel – David Helbock : piano, electronics and percussion; Andreas Broger : soprano and tenor saxophones, clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, recorder, flugelhorn, electronics and percussion; Johannes Bär: trumpet, flugelhorn, bass flugelhorn, sousaphone, tube, alphorn, beatbox, didgeridoo, electronics and percussion

David Helbock is a "consistent tracker on the pulse of time" and a "gifted storyteller on the piano" (3sat Kulturzeit). Already on his ACT debut "Into the Mystic", the Austrian put a new, personal stamp on well-known compositions. His album is a "Tour d'Horizon" - also the title - to the grandees of jazz piano.

David Helbock’s Random Control

By Ken Micallef   |   Published August 2018

David Helbock’s 18 albums as a leader position the 34-year-old pianist as a creative thinker unafraid to put his stamp on the works of jazz masters past, while furthering his own distinctive catalog. The Austrian’s Tour D’Horizon exemplifies his approach, a covers album wherein the pianist pays tribute to his influences.

It might be easy to dismiss the album purely for its well-worn material: Joe Zawinul’s “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” Paul Desmond’s “Take Five,” Duke Ellington’s “In A Sentimental Mood.” But the trio upends the “less is more” attitude by cleverly rearranging each composition with a minimalist slant that plays to the group’s strengths.

The music of Joaquin Rodrigo via Miles Davis appears in the trio’s version of “Concierto De Aranjuez (Adagio),” given a lush, if Spartan, treatment of brushed harpsichord, plucked piano strings, low-note grumbles and raspy flute. But that only serves as introduction to Chick Corea’s “Spain,” its trademark melody performed by sympathetic piano and soprano saxophone, then upended with beatbox flute, Steve Reichian piano rhythms and, of course, the carnival-like bridge. Tour D’Horizon surprises at every turn, a measured feast for the senses.

Tour D’Horizon: African Marketplace; Seven Days Of Falling; Concierto De Aranjuez (Adagio); Spain; In A Sentimental Mood; Mercy, Mercy, Mercy; Blue In Green; Watermelon Man; My Song; Utviklingssang; Bolivia; Take Five. (50:08) Personnel: David Helbock, piano, electronics, percussion; Andreas Broger, saxophones, clarinets, reed instruments; Johannes Bär, tuba, trumpet, brass instruments.

Info for Tour D'horizon

Austrian pianist David Helbock has been called “a consistent trail-blazer” and “a gifted story-teller at the piano” (quote from 3sat Kulturzeit). In his ACT debut album “Into the Mystic” (2016), he left his personal and individual imprint on well-known compositions from Beethoven to Thelonious Monk and John Williams, setting them in a context of mythology, legends and the spiritual. For this new outing with the Random/Control Trio, Helbock concentrates mainly on pianists who have been his musical role models. His new album is a “Tour d'Horizon” – as the title suggests – of the greats of the jazz piano. “For this album I have chosen pieces by my favourite jazz pianists, the ones who have expanded my artistic horizons.” His 12 interpretations form a broad arc, ranging beyond the jazz sphere to include Spanish classical composer Joaquín Rodrigo, with the popular second movement of the “Concierto de Aranjuez” – reminds us of Helbock's background in classical music. Carla Bley is included with “Utviklingssang”, a tune based on just one melodic fragment. The piece proves, as Helbock explains, that she “is a complete master of the simple but ingenious melody that stays in the listener's ear and immediately establishes a mood.” When it came to songwriters, two fellow musicians who were both hugely influential composers in their time proved shoo-ins for this album. Naturally, Duke Ellington is there. His “In A Sentimental Mood”, says Helbock, “occupies the middle ground somewhere between his epoch-defining suites and his danceable chart-toppers, and feels like a good choice.” And there is Esbjörn Svensson, who died exactly ten years ago, far too early. Svensson’s innovative combination of dynamics, groove and melody brought into being a new and broad stylistic movement in jazz. Here David Helbock gives an impressive and vivid account of “Seven Days of Falling”. There is also a pianist whose influence Helbock absorbed extraordinarily early: “I have a very special and emotional relationship with Keith Jarrett’s music,” he says, “because my mother listened to his music through her pregnancy, so I suspect that the first music I ever heard, even before I was born, must have been ‘My Song’.” Herbie Hancock's “Watermelon Man” stands for Helbock's musical awakening as a teenager: “The first album I bought for myself was one of his Greatest Hits compilations”. Joe Zawinul is not to be overlooked either, as he is an illustrious forerunner for Helbock, an Austrian who conquered the world of jazz. Miles Davis' “Blue In Green” and Paul Desmond‘s “Take Five” are two pieces not actually composed by pianists, but which are nevertheless indelibly associated with the giants of the piano who played in the bands that first recorded the tunes, Bill Evans and Dave Brubeck. ‘Covers’ is an inadequate word to describe the way Helbock interprets and adapts these pieces, his approach to the classics of jazz piano history is far too individual for that. And originality begins with the instrumentation he uses: Helbock has entrusted the project to his percussionless Random/Control Trio with two multi-instrumental wind virtuosi Andreas Broger and Johannes Bär. These friends from the Vorarlberg region of Austria have already made a name for themselves as humorous sound anarchists at the ‘Holstuonarmusigbigbandclub’ (HMBC), and have even climbed up the pop charts. This pair of one-man bands brings a particular brand of anarchy. They always follow a pre-conceived plan, whether it be in the bands of Matthias Schriefl or Phil Yeager. This approach is to the fore in Abdullah Ibrahim's tune “African Marketplace”. It bursts with joie de vivre, and provides the ideal entry point into this “Tour d'Horizon”. Using over 20 instruments including a didgeridoo and a tuba, they make sense of the title quite literally. Helbock doesn’t just play the keys of the piano, he also hits the strings directly and plays percussively on the piano’s wooden case. Shrill flutes, beatboxing voices or synthesizer sounds... this trio of whirling dervishes use everything imaginable – and more – in a rousing power trip through Helbock's highly personal musical history. The jazz spirit of “Tour d'Horizon” fires up the glowing embers of tradition and turns them into a blazing beacon for the future. David Helbock, piano, electronics, percussion Andreas Broger, saxophones, clarinets & various reed instruments Johannes Bär, tuba, trumpet & various brass instruments Recorded by Klaus Scheuermann at Hansa Studios Berlin, December 11 & 12, 2017 Mixed and mastered by Klaus Scheuermann in February & March 2018 Produced by Siggi Loch

Essay on My Pet Dog for Students

Essay writing is a crucial part of language studies. Not just that, it is also a mandatory question in the school exam. Essay writing is included in the exam to check students’ imagination and how well they can weave their thoughts into words. It also evaluates someone’s understanding of language and grammar. Many people love to have dogs as their pets as they are friendly, loyal and a great stress reliever. Students can get a free essay on My Pet Dog at Vedantu’s site.

An Introduction On My Pet Dog

The relationship between humans and dogs can’t be expressed in words. Dogs are loyal and friendly and their love is unconditional. Make friends with dogs and you will never feel lonely. A dog is a domestic animal. Dogs are harmless unless someone attacks them.

On the way back from school, I found a helpless hungry puppy lying on the roadside. I brought it home. It was obvious, my mother burst with anger on seeing this. But with time, my mother accepted him and allowed him to stay with us. He has sparkles in his eyes which attracted us. My sister called him Sheru and that’s how he got a new name. Sheru does not demand much but good food, frequent conversation, exercise and a little fun activity.

Sheru is a member of our family. He loves to play and jumps all around the house. Everyone in the family loves him dearly as he is a stress buster for us. He is loyal and is a protractor of our family. There are a lot of lessons for why everyone must have dogs at home. Life becomes easy when you have an anytime available mate like them. They provide sympathy in our bad times, behave like a bodyguard in times of crises and a loving sibling at the time when we are lonely.

Long Essay on Pet Dogs

Around the world, people keep various animals as their pets. Some are fond of cats, while others prefer fish aquariums, some love to play with cows in the cattle field. But by far, the most adored animal on the planet is a dog. It is called a man’s best friend for the same reason. The loyalty of a dog is unmatched and unbeatable. The best instinct in dogs is to protect their owner. In a world that is constantly changing and there is a rush in every aspect of life, pets provide a sense of security and peace for their owners. When the owner returns home, he/she finds a dog waiting and jumps towards them with a sense of joy and excitement. Dogs are an excellent company. A loyal confidante and undeniably cute. There are various instances in which dogs have shown their bravery, saved the lives of their owners. Some dogs, even though they aren't physically savage, still manage to rescue their owners from danger. The dogs can sense something wrong before it even happens. Animals are gifted with a sixth sense.

For introverted people, dogs tend to be the perfect companions. The company of a dog is what a person needs when he/she is sad or upset. Dogs provide love and support, and they accurately detect when their owner is sad or crying.

Studies have shown that being in company with a dog can result in less anxiety. For someone battling with anxiety disorder, I can vouch for it, that dogs are the greatest stress busters, and sometimes even replace therapy sessions. A long walk with a dog can do the trick.

Types of Dogs

Dogs come in a variety of breeds. The most famous dog breeds are Labrador retrievers, bulldogs, german shepherds and pugs.

Although all the dogs are extremely friendly, nothing can beat a labrador when it comes to friendliness. They are loving and understand when their owner is upset or happy. The German shepherds, Dobermann and the bulldogs are quite protective, they serve well if the owner is living alone. The smaller breeds like pug and chihuahua are cute and are not that hard to tame. Pomeranians with their long hair are a little hard to maintain, but still can be done.

In a real-life incident that happened in 2013, a mountain dog called Bella saved her owner out of a burning house. That's how protective and caring the dogs are.

The reason dogs are so protective when it comes to their owners is that they consider them a family. But for a dog to act right when it's being protective it needs to be trained. Most dogs act aggressively when they are protective.

Short Essay On My Pet Dog

Owning a dog is also a huge responsibility and commitment. Owning a dog means taking care of it like a family member. It is like having a younger sibling or a small child in the home that constantly needs care and attention.

Before owning a pet, one also needs to know how to train a dog as it is quite important.

The dogs also need timely health checkups and they need to be taken to the vet constantly. The diet should also be taken care of since most dogs are allergic to some things.

How Do Dogs Positively Affect Human Health?

Research has shown that, in the company of dogs, humans are more cheerful and happy. It is also known to reduce anxiety in humans as well as lower blood pressure. In severe cases, being in the company of dogs has cured depression and other mental health issues.

Health Around Dogs

Any scratches or bites from dogs can be painful and may even be infectious, especially when dogs don't feel safe around something or are scared. The dog injuries can be prevented by training them and also taking a handful of precautions. Regular visits to the vet clinic can be helpful to keep any dog's infections or mites on the bay.

When petting the dog make sure the hands are washed before and after. This will reduce the risk of infections if any.

The dogs also need hygienic surroundings. The food supplies and the dog utensils should be kept clean.

It is a human need to be loved and appreciated, and dogs do that pretty well. With the company of a dog, a human can seldom feel alone. Humans are more likely to recover from illnesses when they are in the company of a dog. The interesting fact is that owning a dog will increase one's physical activity and well-being, as you need to consistently take them out for a walk outdoors, it is a win-win for both the owner and the dog.

My Pet Essay

500 words essay on my pet.

Pets are a blessing that only lucky people get to have. I have been lucky enough to have many pets since my childhood. My pet is a cat whom we call Mingi. It is white and grey in colour. Mingi is 3 years old and has been with me ever since she was born. Through my pet essay, I will make you learn all about Mingi and why it is so dear to me.

my pet essay

How Mingi Became My Pet Essay

Mingi has short hair and also a glossy coat. It is a female and love to have milk and chicken. Sometimes, I treat it with fish as it loves the taste of tuna. Moreover, Mingi is a very loving pet that stays with me at all times.

Ever since I was little, I liked cats. I love how clean and majestic they are. Although, there were no plans to keep a pet cat. My mother did not allow me as she would end up doing all the work for the pet.

However, she used to keep a bowl of fresh water in our garden to ensure no birds or animals remain thirsty during the summer season. A lot of pigeons and sparrows come to my garden to quench their thirst.

One fine day, a cat came to drink the water. It started coming regularly afterwards and gave birth to kittens in our garden. My mother gave them food as well and some milk every day.

However, one day all of them were gone except for a little kitten. I started to feed it regularly and became close to it. As the mother did not return, I decided to keep it as my pet.

After taking permission from my mother, I finally got to keep Mingi by promising to bear its responsibility. Ever since Mingi has been in my life. It was so little but now has grown into a big and beautiful cat.

A Clean Pet

Cats are one of the cleanest pets that do not require a lot of effort to maintain. I hardly have to worry about Mingi being dirty as it cleans itself regularly. I conduct a bathing session every month with my mother.

It is not easy but Mingi is now used to it. We also comb Mingi’s coat twice a week so no dead hair remains and her hygiene is intact. Moreover, it may sound rare but we also brush Mingi’s teeth every week.

During winters , Mingi gets cold so we have got her a warm coat to protect her from the cold. Mingi remains indoors mostly and never dirties our house. Ever since it was little, she knew where to relieve herself so she’s always been low maintenance and love.

Conclusion Of My Pet Essay

All in all, Mingi has been a blessing that happened by chance. However, she is now an inseparable part of my life. I love spending time with her and she manages to make my saddest days happier.

Short Essay on My Pet (250 – 300 Words)

Introduction

People who have pets are lucky. Every day seems fun and interesting when they are around. A pet is an animal that lives with people but is not forced to work. Many people prefer dogs and cats as their pets. Taking care of pets is both fun and hard, and once you start doing it, it’s hard to stop.

Maggie is the name of my adorable pet cat. It is white and yellow in color. When we got her, she was just a tiny kitten, but now she is a big, beautiful cat. It is a very friendly pet that is always with me. She likes to drink milk and eat bread. We also comb Maggie’s fur twice a week to get rid of any dead hair and keep her clean. Every month, my mom and I give her a bath. My friends and family all like my pet cat.

Why I Love My Pet

Maggie makes me feel really good to play with her. I love spending time with her, and even when I’m sad, she makes me feel better. She always follows instructions. She eats all of her food and makes sure it doesn’t spill. Maggie is very friendly. She never used her nails to hurt anyone.

Having a pet is overwhelming, no matter what kind it is, they change our lives. Moreover, people think of their pets as their kids and themselves as parents. However, it is important to make sure your pet has everything it needs to live a happy and healthy life.

Long Essay on My Pet (500 Words)

Having a pet is a great blessing for anyone. A pet is an animal that a person keeps mostly for companionship or fun. They give us company and emotional support, lower our stress and feelings of loneliness help us make more friends, and boost a child’s self-esteem and emotional growth. There are many different kinds of animals that can be kept as pets. Slowly, they become part of the family and also a part of life.

The Arrival of My Pet

I really like dogs and care a lot about them. I asked my father for a pet dog and he gifted me a puppy on my birthday. My pet dog is a pug. It is small and brown in color. We named it Oreo. Oreo likes bread, meat, and milk. It also likes things to be clean, so it never messes up the floor, beds, or clothes. I built a small kennel in a corner of my house, where it spends most of its time.

My Pet: My Best Friend

My pet dog is very cute. I can’t imagine living without him. He sleeps most of the day and stays awake at night to watch the house. We feel pretty safe and secure because Oreo is around. I take care of him and keep him clean. I bath him and brush his teeth once a week. I enjoy being with him. When I throw the ball far away, it runs to get it and brings it back quickly.

Even my friends like to play with my dog. I always look after him well. I take him to the doctor once a month to get vaccines. My Oreo has become my best friend and I like spending a lot of time with him.

Features of My Pet

My Oreo knows how to sit, stand, run, and bring me things when I tell it to. He goes on walks with me and likes to bark at other dogs. It doesn’t jump on our beds or couches. He barks so loudly when someone is at the gate that we all know that someone is arriving.

Even though it is friendly and likes to play, it follows orders very well. When it is in the house’s courtyard, thieves and burglars won’t even think about breaking into our home. It has a strong sense of smell and gets suspicious when it smells something strange or new. It takes care of the house, is loyal, and loves me with all its heart.

One of the best things in life is having a pet of your own. Pets add a lot of beauty to a person’s life. They make us feel better and less stressed out. Pets are great companions for people who live alone at home. Every home should have at least one pet to keep the kids entertained. It is equally important that we look after our domesticated animals.

I hope the above provided essay on My Pet will be helpful in understanding the joy of having a pet.

How To Write An Essay On The Cow For Grades 1, 2 and 3

' src=

Key Points To Remember: Essay On The Cow

10 lines on the cow in english, short essay on the cow, long paragraph on the cow for kids, what will your child learn from the essay.

Essay writing is a vital part of English language learning. Even lower primary students are given essay writing to test their knowledge of English vocabulary and grammar! Apart from testing their knowledge and command of the English language, essays also play a pivotal role in making the kid think deeply about the topic and express their views on that given topic. As your child keeps practising essay writing, their creativity and knowledge of the English language improve. Also, essay writing helps them observe things more keenly to enhance their perception power useful in essay writing. An essay, or a paragraph, about the most popular animal kids know, the cow, is a frequent essay topic for school kids. Cows are probably the most common animals kids see everywhere in India, so it makes it an easy topic to focus on for class 1, 2 & 3 kids.

Before young kids learn to write an essay on the cow, they first need to make a sentence about the cow. Once they can make sentences about cows, they can sequentially arrange those sentences to form an essay. A few key points to remember that will help young kids to write an essay on the cow for classes 1, 2, and 3 are:

  • Write a short introduction on cows
  • Talk about the shape and size of a cow
  • Write about the inhabitation of cows
  • Describe the nature of the cow
  • Talk about the benefits of a cow

Before a lower primary student learns to write an essay on cows, they need to begin with simple sentences. Here are 10 lines for class 2 and other lower primary kids on cow in English:

  • A cow is a domestic animal that is very common, and can be seen often.
  • It is found worldwide in various sizes, shapes, and colours.
  • The cow has two ears and eyes, one big nose, a long tail, four limbs, and two sharp horns.
  • It can live in jungles, villages, pastures, and even cities.
  • A cow is known for its gentle and quiet nature.
  • A cow is a herbivore that feeds on fresh grass, grains, husk, and vegetables.
  • It gives milk that humans use for drinking.
  • The milk of cows is highly nutritious and provides lots of health benefits.
  • You can utilise cow’s milk to make dairy products such as curd, ghee, and cheese.
  • The male cow, called the Ox, is used for farming and drawing carts.

As everything starts with a small step first and then proceeds to a larger step, essay writing is just the same for young kids! First, the lower primary class kids learn to write a short paragraph on the subject, and then they can write a long essay on the topic.

Here is a sample essay on the cow:

The cow is a domestic animal one sees every day. Cows are found worldwide in various shapes, colours, and sizes. There are more than 1000 cow breeds in the world. Cows are the female mammal, and the male cow is called the Ox or Bull. A male cow’s child is known as a ‘Calf,’ while a female cow’s child is known as a ‘Heifer.’ Like most animals, cows have two eyes and ears, a nose, a long tail, four limbs, and two sharp horns. People keep cows at home for various reasons, including the provision of milk and making other dairy products from that milk. Cows are also bred for ploughing the fields or pulling the carts. They are peaceful animals, and are gentle and caring in nature.

Once young kids have mastered writing sentences and short paragraphs on cows, they can write a long paragraph on the same subject! A long essay on the cow for class 3 or other lower primary classes showcases the kid’s creativity and grasp of English knowledge. Here is the sample long paragraph on the subject:

A cow is one of the most loving and gentle animals, and is also a favourite when it comes to domestic animals across the world! The cow has more than 1000 breeds, and can be seen in various shapes, sizes, and colours. Though, the most common colour of cow is white! The cow is the female mammal, and the male cow is called the Bull or Ox. ‘Heifer’ is the female baby cow, and ‘calf’ is the male baby cow. A cow has all physical features like other mammals with a long tail and two sharp horns.

You can find cows almost everywhere. They can live in villages, cities, and jungles. They are mostly bred for milk in homes or dairy farms. Then they are used in villages for ploughing fields. Another use of cows is in pulling carts in villages and towns. Cows are milk-producing animals. Their milk is very nutritious and is healthy for humans. It is considered the healthiest animal milk recommended for young babies and sick people. A cow’s milk is used for making other dairy products. Curd, butter, buttermilk, cheese, and ghee are popular dairy products made using cow’s milk.

Apart from the milk, even the cow’s dung is very useful. It is used to make biogas and renewable energy source. Natural fertilizer made of cow dung improves the productivity of the fields. It is also used to make cow dung cakes used in rural areas as fuel for cooking.

An essay on the cow is the easiest of essay topics for young kids of grades 1, 2 and 3. Expressing their feelings and knowledge about cows makes them think of how to put those words into sentences, improving their vocabulary and grammar. Later, this cow essay will serve as a reference for other animal-related topics. While writing the essay, your child will learn to express their thoughts, explore their creativity, and compose sequential sentences to describe the given topic.

Due to their familiarity with cows, children can freely express their views and improve their English creativity writing skills.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?   My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

David Aldridge Suggests Miami Heat-Jimmy Butler Breakup Could Be On The Horizon

  • Author: Anthony Pasciolla

In this story:

The Miami Heat parting ways with veteran star Jimmy Butler seems unlikely, but trade speculation rising within a few days of elimination is not a good sign.

Butler missed the Heat's Round 1 matchup against the Boston Celtics due to injury, a common problem for the star in recent years. The Athletic's David Aldridge believes the difference in mindsets between Butler and the front office could lead to an eventual breakup.

"But there have been murmurings this year that Butler and the Heat may no longer be singing from the same hymnal. Butler, famously, does things his way, and Miami’s organization, famously, does not brook much individualism," Aldridge wrote.

The Philadelphia 76ers are regarded as one of the top potential destinations for the six-time All-Star due to their extensive cap space and ties with Butler. The Sixers have freedom to disburse the majority of their money outside of extending star Tyrese Maxey. Not to mention, the 34-year-old forward prospered alongside reigning MVP Joel Embiid in his single season in Philadelphia. It's important to note the Sixers' decision to sign forward Tobias Harris instead of Butler in 2019 could cause hesitancy from his perspective.

"To be sure, Miami doesn’t mind the uncomfortable feelings a player of Butler’s caliber can create in search of championships," Aldridge wrote. "But Heat Culture has parameters and expectations. Butler’s never played more than 64 games in any of his five seasons there, and while he bristles at the “Playoff Jimmy” moniker, the postseason clearly matters to him more than January and March games in Detroit or Washington or Charlotte."
