Colmar, a perfect day trip

Colmar, a perfect day trip

Fountain in Colmar

After lunch, we wandered the cobblestone streets filled with colorful houses, looking in trinket shops, bakeries, and through the beautiful churches. A highlight was the little train tour through town. We toured the city in a 30 minute train ride. Colmar had a few playgrounds as well as little rocking horses strategically placed where a kid might get restless. My favorite spot was Little Venice , which reminded me of our recent April trip to Venice with my Dad. We hope to do another day trip this month and bring a case or two of the Alsatian wine home with us!

What to do in one day in colmar: a perfect itinerary.

Do you fancy visiting one of the most beautiful towns in Europe? With just one day in Colmar, you’ll be able to take a boat ride on its canals, stroll its scenic streets and sample delicious Alsace cuisine.

It’s one of my favourite solo destinations in France .

Hit the ground running with my tried and tested itinerary 1-day Colmar itinerary. You’ll also find recommendations for where to stay and eat in Colmar plus other essential tips, including how to get there and how to get around.

  • Visit the Dominican Church

What is So Special About Colmar?

Colmar looks like it has been lifted straight out of a book of fairy tales. Some believe that it was the inspiration for Belle’s village in Disney’s  Beauty and the Beast .

Picture cobbled streets and pastel-hued, half-timbered houses lining small canals. Add a smattering of lively cafes, historic churches and museums and you’ll have the measure of the place.

woman walking along street with gabled buildings

The city’s architecture is a legacy of the Alsace region see-sawing between Germany and France over 200 years. These fluctuations in ownership are also reflected in the region’s cuisine.

Blending German and French culinary influences, Colmar is  foodie heaven . And oenophiles will not be short-changed either. Known as the Capital of Alsatian Wine, Colmar is firmly on the Alsatian Wine Route .

What to Do in Colmar: 1-Day Itinerary

As the historic hub of Colmar is spread over a small area and the list of must-do sights modest, it is easy to explore in one day. Make the most of your day in Colmar with the itinerary that I used.

Think of this as a loose framework on which to hang your day. Much of the pleasure of visiting Colmar comes from just mooching around, drinking in its beauty and capturing those Kodak moments.

  • MORNING : Self-guided walking tour of Colmar’s historic centre
  • LUNCHTIME: Covered Market
  • AFTERNOON: Canal cruise, Dominican Church, Saint Martin’s Church, House of Heads
  • EVENING : Dinner at Le Soi

Helpful pavement plaques of Lady Liberty will point you in the right direction. These are a nod to Colmar’s most famous son, the sculptor  Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi , who designed the Statue of Liberty in New York City.

La Petite Venise (Little Venice or Petite Venice)

Your first stop is La Petite Venise.

This is the name given to the area crossed by canals of the River Launch and is where the city hits peak prettiness. As this is not exactly a well-kept secret, start early before the crowds descend.

gabled-buildings reflected in still water of canal which are the best things to see in one day in Colmar in France

Start on  Rue Turenne  and then turn onto  Quai de la Poissonnerie .

This is the old  Fishmongers’ Quarter  and, as the name suggests, was where the town’s fisherman and boatman lived and worked. The kaleidoscope of pastel-coloured buildings we see lining Colmar’s canals today is thanks to extensive restoration work that took place between 1979 and 1981.

This is also the best place to capture those images of the old town that adorn many postcards of Colmar. Set your camera to stun on the bridge at Rue des Ecoles for those Instaworthy images.

The Tanners’ Quarter & Place de l’Ancienne Douane

From here, make your way to the  Tanners’ Quarter,  named after the tanners who used to live and work in this district. The half-timbered houses lining  Rue des Tanneurs mostly date from the 17 th  and 18 th  Centuries.

Walk back to the  Place de l’Ancienne Douane , the location of one of Colmar’s famous  Christmas markets . This is also where you will find the  Old Customs House  (Koïfhus), dating back to 1480.

The Pfister House (Maison Pfister)

Once you have admired the Old Customs House’s Renaissance-style exterior, turn down Rue des Marchands and across the town’s main street – Grand Rue – to take a look at the  Pfister House.  It is named after the family who restored it and lived there between 1841 and 1892.

Built in 1537 from soft Vosges sandstone, this Colmar landmark is known for its delicate mural paintings representing biblical and secular scenes. Look out also for the wooden oriel window adorned with medallions depicting emperors of the Roman Empire.

LUNCHTIME IN COLMAR

Colmar’s covered market (marché couvert).

By now you should have worked up an appetite. You will find entrances to Colmar’s 14 th  Century Marché Couvert on Rue des Vignerons and Rue des Écoles.

LUNCH RECOMMENDATION

Break for lunch at Légumez-Moi, in the centre of the market, for one of their delicious gratins, a glass of local Reisling and quick service with a smile. Cheap too.

AFTERNOON IN COLMAR

Colmar canal cruise.

Eight euros of your hard-earned cash (2024 price) will buy you a 30-minute cruise along Colmar’s canals. This gives you a close-up view of the town’s medieval buildings before venturing into a more verdant, residential area.

Remember to duck your head when going under those stone bridges!

I bought my boat ticket from La Krutenau restaurant, where Rue Turenne meets Quai de la Poissonnerie. The embarkation point is adjacent to the restaurant.

Admire an artistic masterpiece in the Dominican Church (Église des Dominicains)

Dating mainly from the 14 th  Century, the Dominican Church’s airy interior is illuminated by sublime stained glass windows. However, its star turn is  Martin Schongauer’ s masterpiece,  Madonna of the Rose Bush  (1473).

You will find the church on Place des Dominicains. A small entrance fee applies.

Gaze upwards at the Gothic splendour of Saint Martin’s Church (Collégiale Saint-Martin)

From the Dominican Church, it’s a two-minute walk along Rue des Serruriers to Saint Martin’s Church.

exterior of church

Built between 1234 and 1365 from local pink limestone, locals may refer to it as a cathedral. However, it was a cathedral for less than a decade at the time of the French Revolution.

Its 71-meter-high tower is notable for its lantern shape. Other noteworthy features are its extravagant Baroque organ and two exterior anti-Semitic images – Judensäue – that bear testament to the troubled history of Jews in Alsace.

Admission is free.

The House of Heads

If you have enough time and energy, make a small detour to the House of Heads. Built in the 17th century for the shopkeeper Anton Burger, this German Renaissance building owes its name to the 106 heads that adorn its façade.

EVENING IN COLMAR

Feast on alsace pizza & wine.

My favourite place was the cosy and exceptionally friendly Le Soi at 17 Rue des Marchands. They only do one dish – Tarte Flambée – but, boy oh boy, they do it well!

I sat at the counter, chatting to the other diners, and the owners let me polish off the bottle of excellent Alsace Pinot Noir.

In my opinion, Alsace wines are criminally underrated. This part of France has been one of my favourite wine regions for some years and produces mostly white wines: Reisling ,  Gewurztraminer ,  Pinot Gris  and  Muscat .

The perfect end to a perfect day in Colmar.

Alsatian Food is a perfect marriage of French and German cuisine. Here are a few things that you can expect to find on the menus of Colmar’s restaurants.

Tarte Flambée  – This is an “Alsace Pizza”, with cream ham and cheese topping a wafer-thin flatbread.

Bæckeoffe  – A slow-cooked casserole of sliced potato, onions, mutton, beef and pork.

Choucroure Garnie  – Wine-braised sauerkraut, cured pork, and sausages, flavoured with juniper berries, garlic and cloves.

What is the Best Time of Year to Visit Colmar?

Unless you want to visit the markets or attend its festivals,  Spring or Autumn  are the best times to visit Colmar. It was warm and sunny when I visited in September and, although it was busy, Colmar wasn’t rammed with visitors.

The  quieter months  are January / February and early to mid-November. At the end of November, Colmar becomes a lot busier with the arrival of its famous  Christmas markets , which are open from the end of Novement until late December.

Visitor numbers peak again during the summer, particularly during the  Colmar International Festival ,  showcasing classical music, in early July, and during the  Alsace Wine Fair  in late July / early August.

Easter  can also be a busy time in Colmar when it hosts Easter markets

How to Get to Colmar

Colmar is in eastern France, close to the border with Germany, 40 miles southwest of Strasbourg and around 235 miles from Paris. I used it as a base to explore the Alscase region, staying there for four nights.

It has excellent train connections to other European cities, including Strasbourg and the Freiburg in Germany . The train station is around a 15-minute walk from Colmar’s old town.

  • Paris, France : 2 hours 17 minutes
  • Strasbourg, France : 32 minutes
  • Basel, Switzerland : 45 minutes
  • Zurich, Switzerland : 2 hours
  • Luxembourg, Luxembourg : 2 hours 30 minutes

Colmar is equidistant from  Strasbourg  and  Basel  international  airports .

You can also easily include Colmar in a  road trip  through Europe.

How to Get Around Colmar

As Colmar‘s main attractions are close to each other, walking is your best option.

Top Tips for Visiting Colmar, France

Stay overnight

Many people visit Colmar on a day trip. However, I recommend staying at least one night.

This will allow you to enjoy the streets of Colmar in the evening when they have emptied of day-trippers. It also means that you will be able to sample Alsace food and wine in one of Colmar’s many excellent restaurants.

Make dinner reservations in advance .

Even though I visited Colmar out of peak season, its restaurants were still busy. I dread to think how difficult it would be to get seated without a reservation in peak season.

Where to Stay in Colmar

Colmar hotel choices are limited in its old town. However, there is a decent selection of apartments from which to choose.

Mid-range  – My Sweet Homes Appartements avec SPA

I stayed at this well-equipped apartment which is centrally located.

Here are two other places to stay in Colmar that I have found that may suit different budgets

Spluge – James Boutique Hotel

Close to the Old Town, this boutique hotel has superb reviews.

Budget – Ibis Budget Colmar Centre Gare

Budget options in Colmar are scarce and this may be your best bet.  A modern chain hotel within 15 minutes walk of both the city centre and train station.

Thank you for reading my guide to spending one day in Colmar

As one of the most beautiful towns in France, Colmar is well worth visiting. Around every corner, there are twisting cobblestone streets, impossibly scenic canals and candy-coloured buildings adorned with window boxes bursting with blooms.

Colmar is also a great base from which to explore the Alsace region of France and is a worthy inclusion in a broader European itinerary. Why not add it to a visit to Paris, just over two hours away by train?

Better still, include it in a trip to Germany and Switzerland. Colmar was the final stop of my Interrail train itinerary from London. This started in the lovely Swiss capital of Bern and the Bernese Oberland , before taking the Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt and exploring the Locarno region .

However you choose to visit, I hope that these fabulous things to do in Colmar help you have the very best time in one of France’s loveliest towns. If you’ve enjoyed this article, take a look at some of my other France guides:

Colmar is such a charming town to visit year-round. Whether you want to explore its enchanting Christmas markets around the holiday season or stroll around Petite Venise in early spring, you’ll definitely want to spend at least one day in Colmar to enjoy its beauty.

Colmar is a town located in the Alsace region of France near the German border. Known for its colorful half-timbered houses, this city is part of the Alsace Wine Route and is a great place to try Alsatian cuisine as well as wine.

While this place certainly has a lot to offer, you can definitely see the best things to do in Colmar in just a day.

So let’s talk about how to make the most of Colmar in a day!

Colmar in France

Best Things to do in One Day in Colmar

Between museums and exploring the Old City, here are the best things to do in one day in Colmar!

1. Petite Venise

Colmar at Christmas during the day

First and foremost, you cannot miss the opportunity to stroll around Petite Venise in Colmar. Undoubtedly the most iconic part of Colmar, you’ll instantly fall in love with the vibrantly-hued half-timbered houses on either side of the lovely canal.

This is a fantastic place to stroll around in the morning together before things get crowded later on in the day. There are ample restaurants and shops in the area, and in the spring and summer, you’ll see plenty of flowers along the canal.

While in the area, be sure to also stop by Rue de Tanneurs, a former area for tanners, as well as Quai de la Poissonnerie, the fishermans’ quarters from yesteryear.

2. Colmar Old City

Christmastime in Colmar

To continue your journey in Colmar in a day, be sure to wander around the old city or the Vieux Ville. You can admire places like the Ancienne Douane (or Koifhus), known as the “Old Custom House” which is a Gothic and Renaissance building.

This historical monument has a restaurant and is known during the holiday season to host a Christmas market here with plenty of artisanal goods both inside of the building as well as in the Place de l’Ancienne Douane outside.

Aside from that, there are other things to check out including the Fontaine Schwendi, Manneken-Pis de Colmar , and plenty of shops, museums, and restaurants.

3. Musee Bartholdi

Small Statue of Liberty plaques in Colmar

Fun fact: did you know that the Statue of Liberty in New York City is a gift from France? And if you knew that, did you also know that the sculptor behind the Statue of Liberty is from Colmar?

So if you find yourself strolling around Colmar and notice little plaques on the ground with the Statue of Liberty on them, that’s why!

In Colmar, you can visit the Musee Bartholdi , which is the museum dedicated to Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty sculptor, and his work.

The museum is open February 1-December 31 on Tuesday-Sunday from 10 am-12 pm and 2-6 pm. The price is €5 for adults and an audioguide is €2.

4. Marche Couvert Colmar is a Must-See During Your One Day in Colmar

Cheese at the Marche Les Enfants Rouges

France is a place full of incredible markets, so you definitely want to check out this lovely covered market during your one day in Colmar!

This place has everything you could need including fish, fruits, veggies, spices, bread, meats, cheeses, and even wine! There are also a few restaurants for dine-in or takeaway.

The Marche Couvert Colmar is a fantastic place to stop in for lunchtime to either sit down and eat or to get things to make a picnic lunch at the next destination!

The Marche Couvert Colmar is open on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 am-6 pm, Thursday from 7 am-6 pm, Friday from 8 am-7 pm, Saturday from 8 am-5 pm, and Sunday from 10 am-2 pm.

5. Parc du Champ de Mars

After your visit to the covered market, be sure to stop by Parc du Champ de Mars. This is a lovely park in Colmar that is perfect for a picnic! This park has a big fountain in the middle and several statues of famous French men around the vicinity. There is also a lovely carousel on the edge of the park.

Relax and enjoy your picnic before exploring the next stop.

6. Unterlinden Museum

Located in both a former public bathhouse and a 13th-century Dominican convent is this lovely museum in Colmar . The museum is most famously known for the Isenheim Altarpiece, but there are plenty of things to see here including art from the prehistoric era to the Renaissance and even up to the 20th century.

This museum is open Wednesday through Monday from 9 am-6 pm. Admission is €13 for adults plus €2 for an audio guide.

7. Visit the Lovely Churches of Colmar

Colmar Christmas Markets | Best Alsace Christmas Markets

Located within a 2-minute walk of each other are both the Eglise des Dominicains as well as the Eglise Saint Martin.

The Eglise des Dominicains is a church that dates back to 1283 and has some Alsatian art, and the Eglise Saint Martin is made in the Gothic style and has many notable things to see including the Statue of Virgin and Child, a life-sized Last Supper , and stained glass of Christ’s face.

The Eglise des Dominicains is open on Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday from 10 am-1 pm and 3-6 pm.

St Martin’s Church is open on Monday from 10 am-5:45 pm, Tuesday-Saturday from 8:15 am-5:45 pm, and Sunday from 10 am-7 pm except during services.

8. Go Wine Tasting

Wine tasting at Achille Winery

If you have time, you can certainly try some delicious Alsatian wine while in Colmar. There are a few cellars and shops that allow tastings.

Domaine Robert Karcher et Fils is one spot to check out where you can try Gewurztraminer, Cremant, Riesling, and Pinot Gris. This place is open on Sunday from 9 am-12 pm and Monday-Saturday from 8 am-12 pm, and 1:30-7 pm. Their hours do change seasonally, so be sure to check their website!

Domaine Martin JUND is another place to enjoy some tasty Alsatian wine. They offer 4 types of tastings including a discovery tasting, a deeper dive into Alsatian wine, as well as wine and chocolate or wine and cheese tastings.  It is open on Tuesday-Saturday from 10:30 am-12 pm and 2-6 pm. You can book your tasting here !

9. Dinner at Caveau Saint Pierre to Wrap Up Your One Day in Colmar Itinerary

Tarte Flambee at the markets in the Alsace

After a full day of exploring all the best of Colmar, you’ll have definitely worked up an appetite! And what better way to wrap up your one day in Colmar than with a taste of Alsatian food?

Head to Caveau Saint Pierre, located right along the canal, for a delicious dinner. Enjoy classics like tarte flambee (a very thin flatbread topped with fromage blanc or creme fraiche, onions, and bacon), knepfles (pasta made in the Alsace) topped with cheese, and, of course, delicious Munster cheese .

Caveau Saint Pierre is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday from 12-1:30 pm and 6-8:30 pm. On Saturday, they are open from 8 am-8:30 pm.

After this, it is time to wrap up your day in Colmar!

If You Have More Time in Colmar

Strasbourg Cathedral Christmas Market

There are a couple of other things to see in and around Colmar if you have more time including the Statue of Liberty, located in a traffic circle a bit outside the downtown area, as well as the Toy Museum with all kinds of toys from yesteryear.

There is also the Choco Story Colmar, which is a museum dedicated to chocolate!

However, the best thing to do if you have more time in Colmar is to take a day trip! You can explore the romantic towns along the wine route , or better yet, take a wine day trip to see the vineyards and wineries of this area.

And for those who want to see more countries, there is even a day trip to see 3 villages in France, Germany, and Switzerland nearby.

And you can also hop on the train to discover nearby Strasbourg for a day !

Getting to Colmar and Getting Around

Decorations in the city in Colmar

Thanks to its train station, you can get to Colmar fairly easily. You can fly into nearby Strasbourg and take a train to Colmar. The train ride to Colmar would be around an hour or less.

You can also fly into Paris or Zurich and take the train to Colmar. From Paris, it is about a 2-hour and 20-minute ride, and from Zurich, it is about 2-2.5 hours away.

Once you get to Colmar, if you just plan to stay in the city, it is pretty walkable. If you want to visit places outside of the main part of the city, you could use the bus.

Check out the bus schedule here !

And during the holiday season, they have the Navettes de Noel bus that’ll take you around to various towns in the Alsace like Riquewihr , Ribeauville , Kaysersberg , and more for the Christmas markets! But you need to get there early to get a spot on the bus and tickets.

Lastly, you can also rent a car and drive around the Alsace yourself. You can go at your own pace this way and not worry about catching a bus. I like AutoEurope for checking rental car prices.

Where to Stay in Colmar For a Day

Place decorated with teddy bears in Colmar

While you could just take a day trip to Colmar from places like Strasbourg, I actually recommend spending the night here to get a feel for the town and not feel rushed. Here is where to stay in Colmar.

Budget: Hotel Turenne

While this hotel isn’t located directly on the canal or anything, it is still in a great area for exploring. The exterior is charming, and the rooms are nice and comfortable for your stay. You’re also within a few minutes from Petite Venise on foot.

Book it here!

Mid-Range: Hotel Colombier Suites

Located in Petite Venise on the Rue de la Poissonnerie, you’re in a fantastic location for exploring the area. Plus, the rooms here are lovely with a mix of modern touches and half-timbered walls.

Book it here!

Luxury: La Maison des Tetes

This lovely boutique hotel has 21 rooms and is a historic building. Named after its iconic 106 small stone heads on its facade, this hotel also has a Michelin-starred restaurant. The rooms here are charming and either have views of the street or courtyard.

When to Visit Colmar

Rides in Colmar for children

While you could certainly visit Colmar any time of year, it is most famous for its incredible Christmas markets . The markets are typically open between late November and late December. Honestly, it is a fantastic time to visit the Alsace in general for the Christmas markets.

If you decide to visit then, I strongly recommend coming during the week. Weekends can be crowded, whereas visiting mid-week is lovely. If you do choose to visit around a weekend, you can perhaps have a couple of days in Colmar so you can visit Colmar’s markets on a Thursday or Friday and then check out the smaller Christmas markets in the other towns on Saturday when they are open.

Aside from the holiday season, the Easter and spring markets are a lovely sight to see as well! You can enjoy Easter delights like chocolate bunnies or buy Alsatian goods like plants, toys, and other treats!

Other than that, you really can’t go wrong with a visit to Colmar!

PS- Check out the Strasbourg Christmas markets and Ribeauville Christmas Market too!

How to Spend the Perfect One Day in Colmar Itinerary

By: Author Sophie Nadeau

Last Updated on 19th August 2023 by Sophie Nadeau

Picture perfect Colmar lies alongside the banks of the River Lauch close to the border with Germany. Located on the fringes of France, this Alsatian town offers up a beautiful blend of French and Germanic architecture in the form of pastel hued houses, timber-framed homes, and delightful scenery across the year. Even if you only have a short time in Colmar, you’re sure to fall swiftly in love. Here’s how to spend the perfect one day in Colmar itinerary .

Your Complete Colmar Christmas Market Guide, Alsace, Eastern France

Is one day in Colmar enough?

What is colmar known for, getting to colmar, start with a visit to little venice, explore the old town, have lunch at the covered market, take a boat ride/ learn to make chocolate, head out for dinner for traditional alsace cuisine, if the christmas markets are on…, la maison des têtes, hôtel le colombier suites.

One of the most important questions to ask yourself is whether or not 24 hours in Colmar is really enough time to see the city. Thanks to the fact that many of the city’s most famous attractions are all a stone’s throw away from one another, I would personally say yes!

However, if you prefer to enjoy slower pace, then you’ll want to book a stay in Colmar for two or three days. If you’re also considering visiting Strasbourg, be sure to check out our guide to Strasbourg vs Colmar .

Colmar is famous for its timber-framed houses, which are clustered around a maze of a historic city centre. The little canals in Colmar look like they’ve been plucked straight out of a fairytale, lending themselves to making Colmar one of the most beautiful cities in France.

Colmar has easy transport links to plenty of important cities across Europe, including Paris, Zurich, and Basel . The closest international airport is Basel, which is in Switzerland and serves destinations all over Europe.

If you’re planning on visiting Colmar as part of a longer Christmas route, check out our suggested Christmas Market itinerary .

Colmar also happens to be one of the most important stops along a wine route called the Alsatian wine route. It is of such importance to wine from the Alsace, that it is often dubbed the “capital of Alsatian wine.”

Your Complete Colmar Christmas Market Guide, Alsace, Eastern France

Suggested one day in Colmar itinerary

So-called thanks to its beautiful waterway which snakes through the city and peeks out from below rows of timber-framed houses, Little Venice is undoubtedly the most charming place to visit in Colmar.

Unfortunately this also means that it is the most popular place to go to and so you’ll want to go as early as possible to capture snaps with the fewest amount of crowds possible.

Your Complete Colmar Christmas Market Guide, Alsace, Eastern France

If you’ve ever searched images of France during the festive period, then no doubt you’ll have come across images of Old Town Colmar. A wander through this part of the city feels akin to strolling back in time to medieval France.

The best way to get around the city is on your own two feet as much of inner Colmar is pedestrianised, meaning that comfortable shoes such as sneakers are imperative. If you wish to get to know the town on a more historical level, then you can consider booking a walking tour like this one.

Some not to be missed highlights of Colmar old town include the centrally located St Martin’s Church, the 17th-century House of Heads (which boasts 111 sculptures of heads), and the Pfister House, which is home to a wooden gallery and murals.

Your Complete Colmar Christmas Market Guide, Alsace, Eastern France

After a morning of snapping postcard worthy photos and mooching about the charming streets, you’re bound to be hungry and so should be sure to head to the covered market, which is known in French as Le Marché Couvert de Colmar.

Traditional in style and constructed during the latter half of the 19th-century, Les Halles sits in the very heart of the historic city centre, somewhere between the Collegiate Church of Saint Martin and La Petite Venise  (i.e. one of the most picturesque places in the city).

Step inside during open hours and you’ll soon feast your eyes on a selection of fresh produce from the nearby region and beyond. From artisanal tipples to fresh fruit and vegetables, locals and visitors mingle between the delectable eats and treats for sale.

One particularly interesting feature is a bronze statue fountain of a winegrower which was designed by Auguste Bartholdi in the late 1860s. Though the original statue has since been moved to the Musée Bartholdi for safekeeping, a replica has stood in its place since 1986.

Le Marché Couvert de Colmar (Les Halles)

If you’re the kind of person who likes a laid back and relaxed activity after dining, then taking a boat ride. is the right course of action to take. Boat rides take visitors along the River Lauch. Find more details here.

Alternatively, if you haven’t had enough of a sweet fix, then you can book a chocolate making workshop. Create your own chocolate bar, all while learning the secret of chocolate making from a chocolatier. Check prices and availability here.

secret spots in colmar: Here's your ultimate guide to the best of hidden gems, quirky attractions, and secret spots in Colmar, a fairytale timber-framed town in Alsace Eastern France, Europe

If there’s one travel tip I could give you before booking a trip to Colmar, it’s that you should be sure to make dinner reservations well in advance. This is particularly true of the high season (during the summer and while the Christmas Market is on) when the best places are booked up days in advance.

Alsatian cuisine is pretty meat and stew heavy, with strong influences by Germanic cuisine. Some traditional dishes from the region include foie gras, baeckeoffe, and tarte flambee.

With this being said, over the past few days there has been an increase in the number of vegetarian offerings in Alsace. Some of the best vegetarian food in Colmar includes Cuit lu Cru and L’Arpège, where a vegan menu is on offer.

If the Christmas Markets are happening while you’re visiting Colmar, then you’ll want to completely change up your itinerary so as to incorporate a visit to the Colmar markets , which are truly some of the best and most magical in the world.

Begin the day by heading to Little Venice as, even during the winter, this popular spot is ever busy and so you’ll get the best photos (with the fewest number of people in them) by heading to this area first thing.

You’ll then likely want to spend the entire day strolling around enjoying the markets, but also be sure to also check out some of Colmar’s top hidden gems . When it comes to eating, you’ll probably want to eat at the Christmas Markets. To see a little of what is on offer, check out our Christmas Markets food guide .

Where to stay in Colmar at Christmas

As you might expect from such a beautiful town, Colmar has no shortage of places to stay to suit every budget and need. Here’s a top selection of Colmar accommodation, based on web ratings and locations.

If you’re in search of the ultimate luxurious experience when it comes to Colmar, then you need to look no further than the five-star hotel in the historic city centre. Not only is this über luxe hotel complete with amenities such as a pool, air-conditioning, and WiFi, but it’s also full of historic quirks that make this a unique place to stay. Check rates and availability here.

Well-reviewed and situated close to many of the best Colmar attractions, Le Colombier is a four-star accommodation offering the likes of air-conditioning, room service, and Wi-Fi. Set against the backdrop of a building dating all the way back to the 1500s, other amenities include a sauna and lounge area. Check rates and availability here.

One Day In Colmar Itinerary & Visit Riquewihr (2024)

Are you visiting Colmar, France, and wondering what the best things to do in Colmar in one day are?

You came to the right place!

Colmar is one of the most beautiful towns in France, and you don’t want to miss out on this hidden gem.

In this one day in Colmar itinerary, I will cover what to do in Colmar in one day, how to get there and where to stay,  and how to visit other villages in the region without a car!

Alsace is a unique region in France, as it is a unique blend of French and German influences. How come? The area has been interchangeably part of France and Germany since the 17th century!

Most people only visit Strasbourg – the capital of Alsace, but the rest of the region is equally as impressive.

So, what to do in Colmar for a day? Let’s get started with your Colmar itinerary!

What To See In Colmar In One Day?

When you see a list of the most beautiful towns in Europe, Colmar or one of the Alsatian villages in its neighborhood is always on the list.

With its colorful, half-timbered houses and narrow, cobblestone streets, it is easy to see why!

One Day In Colmar Itinerary

In this itinerary, I will cover the main tourist attractions in Colmar you can visit on a day trip from Strasbourg .

However, the whole city center is practically a pedestrian zone, so it is a fantastic city to walk around and see what you find.

1. Colmar City Centre

Colmar city center essentially covers the whole historic part of the town.

It is the area to wander cobblestone streets, marvel at colorful Alsatian houses, and listen to the murmuring of the river flowing through the city.

It is one of those places that feel like they’ve been untouched by modernization and still preserve its medieval aesthetics.

2. La Petite Venice

view of la petite venice colmar, river and half timbered houses

La Petite Venice is the main touristic area of the city, mainly because it is so picturesque.

Admire the colorful, half-timbered houses lining the canal and bridges decked with colorful flower pots.

In the warmer months, you take a boat tour along the canals. It looked like a very romantic thing to do. However, I was solo this time around!

3. The Fishermen’s Quay

Fishmongers District is another area where you can admire colorful, half-timbered houses lining the canal. It used to be a zone where professional fishermen and boatmen lived, hence the name.

row of houses in fishermans quarter colmar

4. The Tanners District

Tanners Quarter is where the tanners used to live in medieval times. Today you can see their half-timbered houses with high attics that served as a place to dry leather.

5. Pfister House

This house was built in 1537 and is the first example of the architectural Renaissance in Colmar. You will notice it with its wooden elements as you wander the streets, but now you know more about it!

6. Place de l’Ancienne Douane and the Koïfhus

This lovely square is home to one of the oldest houses in Colmar. Koïfhus, the former customs house used as a warehouse, a place for taxation and meetings.

fountain in Place de l’Ancienne Douane

7. House of Heads

House of Heads is another unusual house in the city. It owes its name to 106 grotesque masks on its facade. Take your time to observe the heads – some are hilarious!

8. St. Martin’s Church

This gothic church stands out among the little Alsatian houses. It was built in the 13th century, and the citizens consider it to be their Cathedral.

9. Covered Market Hall

Markets could as well be a French trademark. The French love to get their fruits and vegetables directly from the farmers and you will find a farmer’s market in every city in France. Great place to pick up some local produce and support local agriculture!

10. Colmar Christmas Market

If you visit Colmar from the end of November through December, you will see one of the most beautiful Christmas Markets in Europe !

As the night falls around 6 pm, Christmas lights illuminate the city turning the whole town into a Christmas fairytale.

Colmar takes Christmas very seriously. This small town houses 6 Christmas Markets! So, grab a warm cup of mulled wine, and make sure to discover them all!

11. Statute of Liberty

This one might seem random, but there is a Statute of Liberty at the entrance of the city.

It is not nearly as big as the one in New York, but it’s fun for a photo!

Day Trip From Colmar To Riquewihr

If you are visiting Colmar in the summer months, when the days get longer, combine your day trip to Colmar with a trip to a nearby Alsatian village.

I went to Riquewihr, but you can also visit Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, or Ribeauvillé.

Colmar is lovely, but Alsatian villages take fairytale-like to a whole another level!

If Riquewihr looks familiar, it is because it was the inspiration for the village in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

water fountain and watch tower riquewihr

How to get from Colmar to Riquewihr?

The train does not go to Riquewihr, and you have to take a bus.

You will take Fluo bus 106 from the Colmar Train station. Check the schedule on the Fluo Grand Est website .

One way ticket is 2,40€, but you can immediately buy a return ticket that will cost you 3,80€.

Alternatively, you can bike to Riquewihr!

Alsace is one of the most bike-friendly regions in France, and you will see many cyclists on the road. Be prepared that the road is uphill!

Things To Do In Riquewihr

You don’t need an itinerary to explore Riquewihr. The village is tiny, nestled between vineyard hills.

Enter the city through the Lower gate and walk along the Rue Charles de Gaulle to the Dolder , a 25-meter high watch tower.

A double fortification wall surrounds Riquewihr, the first wall was built in the 13th century and the second in the 16th century. Stroll Rue des Ramparts running between two walls!

Take a break from exploring the village in one of the lovely bars in the village and try some Alsatian wines .

You are surrounded by vineyards after all!

More Things To Do In Colmar

If you have more than a day in Colmar, the best thing to do is to discover more of the Alsace region.

You could easily spend a whole week in this region of vineyards, castles and the most beautiful villages in France.

Some of the best day trips from Colmar are visiting Strasbourg and the picturesque Alsatian villages of Riquewihr , Ribeauville, and Eguisheim .

Alsace is a fantastic region for hiking because nature is incredible. Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg is the most impressive castle in the area.

If you visit Alsace in the autumn, you should take advantage of wine tasting in wineries along the Alsace wine route.

🍷Check the Wine tour from Colmar rates and availability!

Best Time To Visit Colmar

Colmar is a stunning city to explore regardless of the year you visit. Yet, it has two entirely different high seasons.

The first one is spring and summer. Colmar is a gorgeous place to visit as the days get warmer and longer. Flower pots are hanging everywhere, the weather is perfect for exploring the region, and the wineries are open for wine tasting.

The second one is in December. Colmar Christmas Market starts at the end of November and lasts until the end of December, making for a perfect winter backpacking destination .

If you thought the city in the summer looked like a fairytale, just wait until you see it decorated for Christmas! If you need more proof, check out the Colmar Christmas Market website .

To enjoy Colmar without crowds, plan your visit between January and March.

How To Get To Colmar

Colmar is located in the eastern French region of Alsace, right next to the German border. You can reach it by air or land.

The best way to get to Colmar if you are already in the region is by train. It is well connected to many French and nearby European destinations.

I use Trainline for cross-border trips because they allow you to book a ticket for multiple different operators on the same platform. If you are already in France, you can book directly with SNCF.

You can take a Flixbus or Blablacar Bus to Colmar. Bus tickets can be cheaper than train tickets if you book well in advance.

Flying to Colmar

Colmar does not have a commercial airport. However, it is located approximately 70 km from both Strasbourg and Basel Airports.

Therefore, you can pick an airport with the best flight option and then take a train to Colmar.

Strasbourg airport to Colmar: Take a train from Strasbourg Entheim airport to the city center of Strasbourg. It takes about 10 minutes. At Strasbourg train station, transfer to a train to Colmar.

Basel airport to Colmar: Firstly, take a local bus to the Saint Louise train station. The bus takes less than 10 minutes, and you buy a ticket when boarding. Then, from Saint Louise, take a train to Colmar!

a couple wallking on cobblestone streets of riquewihr on a day trip from colmar

Getting Around Colmar

The best way to get around Colmar is by walking.

All tourist attractions are in the historic center, just a short 15-minute walk from the train station.

Cycling in Colmar

If you want to visit the nearby Alsatian villages, you might consider renting a bike (if you didn’t already rent a bike in Strasbourg)

Check out the Colmar bike rental service Velo Docteurs for working hours and rental prices.

Where To Stay In Colmar

I visited Colmar on a day trip from Strasbourg, so I didn’t spend a night there.

If you are backpacking France and want to stay on a budget, I suggest you stay in Strasbourg and visit on a day trip, as there are currently no hostels in town.

There is a wide variety of accommodation options if you want to base yourself in Colmar.

Budget hotel: Hotel Arc-En-Ciel is a 15-minute walk from the city center . It has good reviews and makes for a great base to explore the city.

Authentic Alsatian house: If you are wondering what would it be like to live in one of the fairytale houses in Colmar, Le STUDIO 1586 is the answer!

decorated half timbered houses in the city centre of colmar

Best Vegan Restaurants In Colmar

If you are wondering if you can eat vegan in Colmar, I am here to reassure you that there are restaurants with vegan options in the city!

  • Tabula Rasa – a fully vegan restaurant in the city center of Colmar! They offer two main dishes, a burger, and a Buddha bowl. The ingredients change seasonally.
  • Cuit Lu Cru – This vegetarian restaurant is located inside the covered market, and they offer a creative lunch menu. Unfortunately, they don’t work for dinner, but if you are looking for a coffee with plant-based milk, this is where you find it!
  • 100% Le Bar a Jus – a small juice bar, offering milkshakes, smoothies, and wraps. Vegan items are marked as such!
  • Bretzel – is a great option if you are looking for a quick, Alsacian, and accidentally vegan snack. You can find them in most bakeries, including Paul!

Colmar Travel Budget

France is not an affordable country, but you can visit Colmar for a day trip on a budget!

The most significant expense will be transportation, and the price will vary greatly depending on where you’re coming from.

If you are visiting on a day trip from Strasbourg, you can find train tickets starting from 5€!

A bus from Colmar to Riquewihr will cost you around 4€ for a return ticket, but it can be free if you have your own bike.

You don’t need to spend any money on attractions if you want to stay on a budget. The best thing to do in Colmar and Riquewihr is to simply walk around and admire the scenery.

A meal in a restaurant can cost anywhere from 10 to 15€ per person, while a quick lunch-type meal is around 8€.

Yes, Colmar is a small town, and it is possible to visit all the main attractions in one day. I visited on a day trip from Strasbourg as it is the most common way to visit! If you want to escape the crowds, spend a night in Colmar and explore before tourists come.

Yes, Colmar is a small, safe town with a low crime rate. As a solo female traveler, the same advice always applies. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye on your belongings, as pickpocketing is common in all tourist areas.
