Dettifoss Waterfall is located in Vatnajökull National Park along Jökulsá á fjöllum (Glacial Mountain River). Enjoy the most powerful waterfall in Iceland flowing from the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier, the country’s largest ice cap.

Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe and widely regarded as the most incredible falls in Iceland. It’s impossible to be underwhelmed by the thundering sound created as the falls drop 44 meters (144 ft).

The spray generated by this volume of water has to be seen to be believed. Dettifoss waterfall is one of the locations that form the Diamond Circle route of  North Iceland . The four stops are Húsavík,  Asbyrgi Canyon , Lake  Mývatn  and Dettifoss waterfall.

There are plenty of ways to go around when exploring the thunder-wonder including a footpath down to the falls from the parking lot. There’s also a great viewing platform where you can take in all the glory.

Dettifoss is a fabulously wide waterfall, reaching over 100 meters (328 ft) across a sturdy gray-colored rock foundation where it drops at the greatest force it is famous for.

All around the waterfall you will find amazing locations and gems to explore while checking Dettifoss off your Iceland bucket list. The incredible force of Jökulsá river that feeds Dettifoss creates other unimaginably pretty waterfalls such as  Selfoss  and Hafragilsfoss.

After passing Mývatn, you’ll soon turn onto road 862, a good Iceland road that’s open almost every day of the year. It serves the west side of the waterfall and the drive relatively short.

There is another way to go about reaching the fall which is via road 864 called Hólsfjallavegur. Follow this road for quite some time before reaching the parking lot. The facilities on the Eastern bank are an information panel, a public toilet, and a hiking trail.

Jokulsa Fjollum river in Iceland

Dettifoss is fed by the powerful glacier river Jökulsá á Fjöllum that flows from the most voluminous glacier in Europe,  Vatnajökull glacier . As meltwater flows from the glacier it runs through Jökulsá until it finally drops down into Dettifoss waterfall.

Jökulsá á fjöllum is the second largest river in Iceland and flows eventually flows into the Greenland sea.

Iceland's Dettifoss waterfall landscape in winter

Dettifoss is a stunning sight, no matter the season, but in winter this unbelievable power source looks like something out of the Christmas Tale Storybook. Still, there are two things you need to know before visiting the falls in winter.

Firstly, the road leading to the waterfall might be closed due to poor road conditions, weather, snow or ice and it is important to check the website  www.road.is  if you are planning on driving on your own to Dettifoss in winter.

Secondly, if you are able to reach the falls you will need to be on the lookout for slippery paths and the hike down to the viewing point can be hazardous for those who aren’t equipped with proper footwear.

We recommend boots with sturdy soles and ice spikes on soles for those traveling over the coldest months.

Is Dettifoss The Most Powerful Waterfall in Europe?

Dettifoss Waterfall stands proudly as a formidable waterfall within Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland. Renowned as the second most powerful waterfall in Europe, it follows closely after the mighty Rhine Falls , located in Switzerland.

Dettifoss, however, is double the height of Rhine Falls and it’s arguably the most impressive waterfall in Europe , when we refer to size and flow. Here is a comparison between Rhine and Dettifoss:

How to Get to Dettifoss?

Dettifoss is located in Northeast Iceland, in the Vatnajökull National Park. It’s not far from the Mývatn Lake area. Here are the distances from Iceland’s major cities:

Start by heading northeast on Route 1 (Ring Road), which is the main road around Iceland. Continue on Route 1 until you reach the turnoff for Route 862 (West Side) or Route 864 (East Side), both of which lead to Dettifoss.

Route 862 takes you to the West Side, and it is paved, while route 864 is more rugged and unpaved, leading you to Dettifoss East Side.

From Reykjavik: Dettifoss is around 470 kilometers (292 miles) from Iceland’s capital city. From Akureyri: Around 135 kilometers (84 miles) away. Expect the route to take you about 2 hours.

Below you can find the exact locations of Dettifoss, East and West Side:

Dettifoss West Side

Dettifoss East Side

Parking Facilities at Dettifoss

There is a huge parking area at Dettifoss, on the West Side. The parking is completely free of charge , and it is entirely paved.

On the East Side, the parking is still spacious but much smaller than the one on the West Side, and it’s unpaved. It’s located at the end of a gravel road.

Dettifoss: East Side vs West Side

So, you decided to visit Dettifoss. Which side do you choose?

If you’re thinking about doing both, here’s some bad news for you. There is no bridge nor any ways of crossing the river in the proximity of the waterfall. The drive from the East Side to the West Side is at least 60km (37 miles) long, half of which on dirt roads.

If you have plenty of time it’s definitely something you can do, but is it worth spending all this time to visit the same place twice? Especially considering all the stunning places there are in Iceland? The choice is yours to make. Meanwhile, here’s what each side looks like, with pros & cons.

This is the side we visited. It is the more popular one, and it offers that frontal point of view you may have seen in pictures. It has several viewpoints, it is more accessible and it offers a variety of angles to look at the waterfall. Also, the West Side is where you can walk towards Selfoss, going upstream.

This side is more accessible, as the road is paved for the entire way. There are many parking spots too, as well as restrooms and other facilities.

Dettifoss Waterfall North Iceland Most powerful waterfall in Iceland, Europe

If you’re looking for the one perfect shot, probably the East Side is your best bet. From this access point, you can get much closer to the waterfall and you have a unique angle you can’t get from the opposite side. On the other hand, you won’t have much variety in terms of viewpoints as for the Western Side.

The road to reach this side is unpaved, but there are toilets near the parking area.

Dettifoss Waterfall North Iceland Most powerful waterfall in Iceland, Europe

While both sides are interesting and probably worth seeing, this blog post will focus on the West Side, which is the most popular and also the one we’ve been to. Here is a full guide to Dettifoss, West Side.

Hike to Dettifoss (West Side)

There is a short and flat 1km trail that leads to the waterfall. The path is well marked and it’s fenced to prevent people from stepping out of the designated trail.

After 400m you’ll find a cross road, with the right trail leading towards the nearby Selfoss. We recommend visiting both, while the order of the visit doesn’t really matter. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to walk all the way to Selfoss, as the trail ends at a viewpoint which is still far away from the waterfall.

The Path to Dettifoss

Initially, the landscape may seem desolate, lacking in mountains, trees, or any noteworthy features. Yet, after a brief stroll, the vista undergoes a dramatic metamorphosis, unveiling the majestic Dettifoss — Iceland’s most awe-inspiring waterfall.

The stark surroundings give way to a powerful and awe-inspiring natural spectacle, underlining the unexpected surprises that characterize Iceland’s seemingly unremarkable landscapes.

Dettifoss Waterfall North Iceland Most powerful waterfall in Iceland, Europe

The west side offers a network of walking paths, viewpoints, and decks designed for a complete appreciation of Dettifoss’s majestic beauty.

Head to the lower paths for an up-close encounter with the waterfall’s raw power, or ascend to the upper viewpoints for a panoramic perspective that enhances the overall viewing experience.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIP

For those passioned about photography, try shooting from the area of the platform seen above, towards the waterfall. Place your subject on one of the viewpoints below, far away. Use a medium telephoto (70mm or 100mm will do the trick) and play with proportions! Here is the result!

Dettifoss Waterfall North Iceland Most powerful waterfall in Iceland, Europe

It’s hard to fully comprehend the size of Dettifoss. You can read about it, see pictures, but it won’t be something you get familiar with until you actually visit it.

For example, take a look at the picture below and try to find the person walking on the trail – it’ll give you an idea of just how massive and impressive it is! Can you spot it?

Dettifoss Waterfall North Iceland Most powerful waterfall in Iceland, Europe

Plan to spend around 30 minutes exploring the various paths and decks around Dettifoss. Once you’ve taken in the sights, head towards Selfoss, which is located upstream.

From Dettifoss to Selfoss

Selfoss is another striking waterfall in Iceland. While not as voluminous as its downstream counterpart, Selfoss is known for its elegant and more intricate cascades.

From Dettifoss, retrace your steps towards the parking lot before turning left on the designated trail. S imply follow the signs, and after a straightforward walk, you’ll begin to spot Selfoss in the distance.

Dettifoss Waterfall North Iceland Most powerful waterfall in Iceland, Europe

There are a couple of nice viewpoints along the way, before you reach the main one, located at the end of the trail

The falls span the width of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, creating a mesmerizing display as the water gracefully flows over a series of rugged rocks.

Note: We visited Selfoss in September, and probably it wasn’t the best time to appreciate it. The amount of water flowing on the secondary waterfalls was quite modest, and the waterfall itself wasn’t as impressive as we’ve heard it should be.

What to bring to Dettifoss

Visiting Dettifoss is pretty easy. It’s a quick stop that just involves a simple walk, so there’s not much to stress about.

Make sure to wear good hiking boots and bring a raincoat. Even on sunny days, a waterproof jacket is handy because you might get a bit wet from the mist coming off the falls. Grab your camera, a bottle of water, and enjoy your visit.

Essential gear for visiting Iceland

If instead you’re looking for a list of essential items to bring to iceland, check out our dedicated:

Must-Have Items

A good rain jacket. You want to have a good rain coat with you when visiting Iceland, as the weather can change unpredictably. There’s plenty of shops in Reykjavik that sell – and even rent – rain jackets for your Iceland vacation.

We would recommend a good one like the Marmot Men’s Minimalist Component Jacket or the Columbia Women’s Pouring Adventure II Jacket . Quality jackets can be a bit pricey, but they’re a worthwhile investment, especially for a trip to Iceland.

Waterproof overpants. It somehow seemed an unnecessary item to bring before reaching iceland, but it turned out to be one of those items we used daily. Bring a pair of those, you won’t regret it. Check out Columbia Men’s Rebel Roamer Rain Pant and Columbia Women’s Storm Surge Pant .

Warm Socks : Packing merino wool socks for Iceland is crucial to keep your feet warm and dry in the diverse and often unpredictable weather conditions. For summer, check out DANISH ENDURANCE Merino Wool Hiking Liner Socks , they are great quality and quite thin. If you’re travelling in the coldest months, consider getting knee-high wool socks .

Warm clothing : Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable. Pack thermal layers, including merino wool for its excellent insulation, insulated gloves (especially for winter), and a good quality winter hat .

Sturdy Footwear : Waterproof and insulated boots or hiking shoes are essential for exploring Iceland’s varied terrain. For top-notch gear, you can’t go wrong with brands like Scarpa , Salomon , and La Sportiva . If you’re looking for something a bit more budget-friendly, Merrell and Altra have got you covered.

Please note: If you’re gearing up for glacier walks or ice caving, make sure to go for rigid boots that can fit crampons. Flexible boots offer greater comfort for hiking, but you might struggle if you need to use ice spikes.

Reusable Water Bottle : Iceland has clean, safe and free drinking water everywhere. Therefore, you don’t need a fancy filtration system like the GRAYL GeoPress 24 oz for Iceland.

Save money and cut down on waste by opting for a reusable water bottle . The ideal solution for Iceland is one that works well for both hot and cold beverages.

Toiletries : Pack travel-sized toiletries , including soap, shampoo, and sunscreen, as these can be expensive in Iceland.

Headlamp/Flashlight : In Iceland’s long winter nights or for exploring caves, for chasing auroras or for walking around your campsite, a reliable light source is crucial. We have this one and simply love it, it’s incredibly cheap, bright plus the battery lasts so long.

Portable Charger : Keep your devices charged during outdoor adventures, especially if you’re planning to camp in Iceland. We recently picked up a fast-charging power bank from INIU that works like a charm. Just be sure to grab one with enough capacity for all your devices.

Additional Items

Swimwear : Don’t forget your swimsuit for relaxing in geothermal pools and hot springs.

Backpack : A sturdy, weather-resistant backpack is useful for carrying your essentials during outdoor excursions. If you plan on doing lots of hiking, we recommend a dedicated backpack. You have countless options on the market, but one like Men’s Osprey Talon 22L or Women’s Osprey Tempest 20L would be perfect.

Camera and Binoculars : Iceland’s landscapes are stunning, so bring a camera and binoculars for wildlife and scenic views.

Local Currency : Have some Icelandic Krona (ISK) on hand for small purchases and in case you visit places that don’t accept cards. We never used cash in Iceland, so it’s not something you must bring around, but in a couple of situations it would have been handful.

Food and Drinks : Due to Iceland’s relatively high prices, especially for alcohol, and limited food options in some areas, consider carrying some essential snacks and beverages.

Hiking Gear : If you plan on hiking, consider bringing trekking poles , a compact first-aid kit , and gaiters .

Wet Wipes : Handy for quick clean-ups, especially when camping or on long road trips. These can easily be bought once you land in Iceland, or packed in your backpack before leaving. Check these flushable ones if you’re looking for some.

Swiss Army Knife or Multi-Tool : Useful for various outdoor tasks, especially when camping or preparing food. Here is a cheap one .

Travel Pillow : For added comfort during long drives, flights or while camping. The provided ones aren’t always the best. Here is a good one .

With the 100 meters wide stream, Dettifoss holds its reputation as the most voluminous waterfall in Iceland. Throughout the year, this giant waterfall draws the attention of travelers in huge numbers.  It is one of the attractions that complete the famous Diamond Circle of Iceland. Visiting the Dettifoss waterfall during the summer is convenient as the roads may get closed during winter. Just be careful while climbing the steps as it can be icy. You can plan a weekend road trip to North Iceland to cover the surrounding areas of Dettifoss. For accommodation, you will find many hotels, hostels, and guesthouses in the nearby towns of Akureyri and Húsavík.

April 23, 2022 //  by  Iceland Trippers //   Leave a Comment

If you are planning an epic road trip around Iceland’s Ring Road, make sure to add visiting the Dettifoss waterfall on the itinerary. You won’t want to miss the chance to see and feel the thunderous falls in North Iceland.

Dettifoss is one of the most incredible waterfalls in Iceland . Its impressive display is a pretty popular attraction, and for good reason. In fact, Dettifoss is not a special waterfall just because people love it, but it also has claims of being the most powerful waterfall in Europe! What is Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls?

Iceland is known for its many great waterfalls, Dettifoss waterfall being the most powerful in all of Europe. People come from all over the world to witness this magnificent wonder and hear the falls roar. Another giant, though more humble is found not far upstream, its name is Selfoss waterfall.

The Dettifoss waterfall in Iceland is a giant! No kidding! Over 96,500 gallons of water pour over the falls every single second. Its thunderous falls are so powerful that the ground even shakes beneath your feet as you draw near. Measuring 300 feet (100 meters) across and reaching heights of 144 feet (45 meters), Dettifoss’ gargantuan size will dwarf anything nearby.

Dettifoss is found along the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, the second largest river in Iceland. This river is in fact a glacial river that flows from the Vatnajökull glacier. The Jökulsá á Fjöllum river is sediment rich from Vatnajökull, which makes the water a milky white color.

If you make the stop to see Dettifoss, you will get the chance to see another waterfall that is just a short hike upstream called Selfoss. Selfoss waterfall is not to be confused with the town in south Iceland. Rather, this is the gorgeous Selfoss waterfall in North Iceland that sit along the same river as Jökulsá á Fjöllum.

Although Selfoss is not as mighty as Dettifoss, what it lacks in power, it makes up for with grace. This waterfall is over 300 feet wide (100 meters) and stands 36 feet tall (11 meters). Selfoss falls spill over the edge in curtains. The difference other than height is that Selfoss spills out as elegant curtains over the edge.

What does Dettifoss Mean?

The name Dettifoss translates to ’The Collapsing Waterfall’ which tells a little bit about how it was made.

Dettifoss is part of the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon which was formed by major volcanic eruptions from the Vatnajökull glacier and other previous glacial floods within the last 9,000 years. As volcanic eruptions melted the glaciers from beneath, enormous volumes of meltwater came flooding down toward the coast forming the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. Large chunks of columnar basalt were dislodged from the canyon creating the sudden changes in elevations. These spots were called knickpoints, one of which created our mighty giant as well as Selfoss. This is how the massively powerful waterfalls of north Iceland were created.

Where is Dettifoss Located?

Dettifoss is found in Vatnajökull National Park, one of the stops along the Diamond Circle route in Iceland. Just like the popular Golden Circle sight seeing route on Iceland’s south coast, Diamond Circle is another long route(260km) that showcases North Iceland’s wonders. Dettifoss is a worthy stop on the Diamond Circle route along with Ásbyrgi canyon, the Hverfjall volcano, and the pearl of the north, Myvatn lake.

There are two sides of Dettifoss waterfall in Iceland to visit. You can see the waterfall from the east or west side of the river; However, because there is not a bridge nearby, it takes over an hour to drive to the other side. The drive is very long so, we recommend choosing just one side to visit rather than doing both.

West Dettifoss is about a 20 minute, or 15 mile (24 km) drive off Ring Road route 1. The eastside road will take a bit longer to reach totaling about 45 minutes to do the 20-mile (32 km) drive off route 1.

The closest town to Dettifoss waterfall is Akureyri, or the ‘Capital of the North. From Akureyri to Dettifoss, it takes about two 2 hours and 15 minutes and is 100 miles (168 km) apart. Akureyri has plenty of sleeping accommodations and is a great stop for food and fuel. We suggest staying there or in Húsavík which is the next closest town. Húsavík, is a seaside village that boasts some of the best whale watching in Iceland .

Capital of the north, Akureyi with its colorful homes on the water with snowy mountains in the background

Where is Selfoss Waterfall Located?

Selfoss is another waterfall just upstream of the most powerful waterfall in Europe. It too sits along the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river making it a great waterfall to add to the Diamond Circle itinerary. After all, if you visit Dettifoss you will already be in the car park for Selfoss. Walk just a short hike away to see one of Iceland’s incredible waterfalls .

Dettifoss and Prometheus

The epic landscapes in Iceland make you often feel like you have been transported to another world. For this reason, Iceland’s beautiful places have made its way to many films. Dettifoss is included in that list of movie star landscapes too.

You may have seen our mighty giant before. In 2012, Dettifoss made an impressive appearance in the popular sci-fi film Prometheus. You can see the waterfall roaring in the opening scene. This is where everyone typically recognizes Dettifoss from, though there is not a hovering spaceship to mark the spot. However, if you take road 864 to the east side Dettifoss, you will have the same viewpoint that starred in Prometheus .

East Dettifoss is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe and has milky white rushing waters

Visiting West Dettifoss

As we mentioned before, two different routes can be taken from the Ring Road to reach Dettifoss. You can visit Dettifoss either from the west or east side, though we do not recommend trying to see both.

The west side route is the most traveled path. The westside entrance (road 862) is favored because the road is paved and the access to Dettifoss is easier. From the highest westside viewing platform, you can see the full length of the waterfall. This site has the best golden hour during the summer, great for those dreamy-like pictures of one of the most beautiful falls in Europe. Be aware: the upper viewpoint at west Dettifoss has a lot of mist and may end up getting you wet. The spray of the waterfall can be a lot!

The lower viewpoint gets you relatively close to Dettifoss and will allow you to see it straight on. It has a near tangible ‘wow’ factor from this viewpoint that you won’t want to miss. Although the trail is steep, the view of Dettifoss is totally worth it.

Plan to make another one of the great stops off the Ring Road to visit west Dettifoss and Selfoss. Just turn onto road 682 from Route 1 in North Iceland. There is a large parking lot and a visitor center with bathrooms and a gift shop.

Person in blue rain coat standing at the West Dettifoss viewing platform with thunderous falls straight ahead

Visiting East Dettifoss

To get a different perspective of Dettifoss, take the road down to the east side. Even though it’s a tad bit tougher to access, you will be able to avoid large crowds while getting a great view.

The road from the east side of the Jökulsá river is a very, very long gravel road (864) that is not favored by everyone. Although you are not required to have a 4wd to go down road 864, the gravel road has many potholes and makes the drive a bit bumpy. This road often has closures due to weather, so be sure to check Iceland road conditions before planning the trip.

The eastside view is impressive. The full length of Dettifoss can be seen from the eastside; However, the extent of its width is hidden. It is much easier to get a picture of Dettifoss in a regular camera from this side. Another advantage of the east side platform is that you may not get as wet from the spray.

The car park is pretty small on the east side, so if you are traveling to Dettifoss in the summer, go early to get a spot.

Colorful sunset from the east side viewpoint where rushing waterfall is causing mist to fill the canyon

Visiting Selfoss Waterfall From Dettifoss

Selfoss can be visited from Dettifoss no matter which side you are visiting, no need to even leave the car park.

The views of Selfoss are pretty different east compared to the west side. From the west side, Selfoss only shows a sliver of its falls. To visit Selfoss from the westside, take the trail from the lower viewpoint back toward the parking lot. You’ll see a sign for Selfoss along the way. Follow the 0.5-mile (1 km) trail along the river to get there.

The view of Selfoss from the eastside is just under a mile (1.4 km) away from Dettifoss. This trail is a bit more rugged than the west side counterpart. You’ll be climbing over boulders along the riverfront until you reach Selfoss viewpoint. In our opinion, Selfoss is best seen from this side because you can see the curtain effect of the falls.

Is There a Long Hike to Visit Dettifoss Waterfall?

West Dettifoss is a fairly easy hike. The walk from the parking lot is 0.5 miles (1 km) and mostly downhill. The paved trail takes you along the edge of the canyon to both the upper viewing platform and the lower viewing platform.

The walk to see the upper and lower viewpoints is not very long and you won’t want to miss either, so make sure to do each. Include the unpaved hike down to west Selfoss waterfall. Selfoss is not much further upstream and is totally worth the effort.

The trail loop from the parking lot to Dettifoss and Selfoss, then back is 1.5 miles (2.5 km) and will take about an hour to complete. You’ll be amazed by roaring falls, epic Icelandic scenery, and possible giant rainbows too!

The hike from the east side of Dettifoss is a steep rocky path downhill with some stairs. East Selfoss is still just a short walk away although it will require navigating over small boulders near the river’s edge. Round trip, the hike to Dettifoss from the east side is 2.3 miles (about 3.5 km) long. Mist from the falls makes the trails slippery, so be sure to watch your footing as you explore. This is definitely a place where you would not want to slip.

How Long to Spend at Dettifoss and Selfoss

Are you wondering how long to spend at Dettifoss and Selfoss? Although the hikes are relatively short, we recommend leaving time for taking pictures and just enjoying the epic views. We think it is best to leave 1-2 hours for the visit.

Camping at Dettifoss

Dettifoss does have a small campground that is only intended for through-hikers such as those who do the two-day-long Canyon Trial to Ásbyrgi. The campsite is primitive and without running water. Rangers bring fresh water to the site daily. Because the water is a limited supply, please leave the water for thirsty hikers.

However, if you are looking for somewhere to sleep, there are other great places to stay the night nearby. Stay in the Capital of the North Akureyri, to see the iconic Akureyrarkirkja church. The Lake Myvatn nature baths are also nearby and have great places to stay near Dettifoss waterfall in Iceland. Another town near the falls that you could choose to stay is the whale watching town of Húsavík. Spend the night in any of these towns on your way to discover more of the Diamond Circle attractions in North Iceland.

Can you Visit Dettifoss in Winter?

Some travelers prefer the beauty of winter in Iceland landscapes over the endless summer sun. These visitors cash out the midnight sun for a dance of the aurora in the night sky. If you wish to visit Dettifoss’ icy waterfalls, do so with these tips in mind.

There is no need to worry about visiting Dettifoss in the winter, as long as you are prepared for the conditions. First of all, to get there you will need a 4×4 drive vehicle in Iceland . East Dettifoss is frequently closed for the winter and even through some of the spring months, so make sure to take westside road 862 instead.

Although the snowy landscape is beautiful, visiting Dettifoss and Selfoss in the winter can be quite dangerous. Not only are the trails typically covered in ice or snow, making the walking paths very slippery. The vehement winter winds and blizzards can often disrupt the view of the waterfall as well. However, if still choose to brave the winds for that epic icy view, you may be rewarded with Iceland’s northern lights over the waterfalls.

Where to Stay Near Dettifoss Waterfall in Iceland

If you are looking for where to stay in Iceland near Dettifoss waterfall, we know of a few great options.

Hótel Laxá Is a great mid-range option and is only 13 miles from  Lake Mývatn nature baths. After a good night’s sleep, make the 53.5-mile drive from Hótel Laxá to Dettifoss.

If you are looking to stay in charming Akureyri hotels and hostels , book a stay at the eclectic yet sophisticated Hotel Akureyri . The drive to the falls is 82 miles and will take about 1.5 hours to do.

If you choose the popular whale-watching town of Húsavík, spend the night at Svartaborg modern cottages. Svartaborg is located 68 miles away from Dettifoss and will take about 1.5 hours to travel to.

Nice accommodations for sleeping with a large bed, wood accents and large windows

Whether you are visiting East or West Dettifoss, the sightseeing tour of the North would not be complete without it. Include Selfoss on the itinerary for some of the most graceful falls in Iceland’s great national parks. After all, the hikes to see these falls are short and fairly easy to access. After you make this stop off the ring road, head to Ásbyrgi canyon, the Hverfjall volcano, and the pearl of the north, Myvatn lake.

Travelers and lovers of life, we hope you enjoy the epic trip to Iceland.

The Ultimate Guide to Dettifoss Waterfall in Iceland

We might have more than 10,000 waterfalls here on the island, but we have a few that stands meters of cliff and spray above the rest (quite literally). And when it comes to Dettifoss , it isn’t just one of the most memorable falls in Iceland, but in all of Europe!

So, if you’re planning an upcoming trip to the island, or would just like to learn more about this waterfall that’s managed to impress an entire continent, read on. We tell you everything about Dettifoss you need to know.

Dettifoss

Dettifoss Falls

As one of the must-visit sites here on the island, there are a lot of questions about the falls, from its height, and the meaning of its name to where it’s located and how it was formed in the first place. Below, we have answered all these frequently asked questions:

Where is Dettifoss Waterfall?

Dettifoss Waterfall is actually one of the main attractions in our biggest national park in the northeastern part of the island; Vatnajökull National Park . Dettifoss is conveniently located just off the popular Diamond Circle route, so many add it as a stop on their Diamond Circle road trip itinerary.

What Does Dettifoss Mean?

The name Dettifoss loosely translates to ‘collapsing waterfall’ . Unlike some of our other famous waterfalls in Iceland , there is no interesting backstory or legend attached to the name but rather served as a literal description of what was seen.

How was Dettifoss Formed?

Dettifoss Waterfall is another spectacular result of Iceland being the Land of Fire and Ice. Volcanoes erupting underneath the Vatnajökull Glacier caused major flooding that not only carved out the enormous Jökulsargljufur Canyon that Dettifoss plunges into , but also helped make Dettifoss the most powerful fall in Iceland.

Well, these floods about 9000 years ago were the catalyst, but there have been many more eruptions that caused more flooding, and today global warming is also playing its part in glacier melting.

How was Dettifoss Formed?

Is Dettifoss the Most Powerful Fall in Iceland?

Most definitely. Roughly, 11.581.225 liters of water go crashing over the Dettifoss cliffs each MINUTE! But not only is Dettifoss the most powerful waterfall in Iceland, but it’s also the second most powerful waterfall in all of Europe! It used to claim top stop till the Rhine Falls in Switzerland bumped it off its pedestal.

How High is Dettifoss Waterfall?

Dettifoss might not be our tallest waterfall here on the island, but it’s the overall size that makes it one of the biggest falls in the country. It clocks in at a height of 44 meters and is a staggering 100 meters wide .

How Do You Get to Dettifoss?

Dettifoss Waterfall offers views from the east as well as the west side. Either side will require that you take a quick hike to the vantage points, but it’s not very far and the walking paths are pretty easy to navigate.

How Long is the Hike to Dettifoss Waterfall?

The distance of the hikes to Dettifoss varies based on the side you choose to view the falls .

The hike on the west side of the falls is the longest (800 meters from the parking lot) . On the east side, the hike might be only 400 meters in distance down to Dettifoss, but it takes slightly longer since the path can get pretty steep. Both of these walks will take you about 10 minutes to complete.

how do you get to dettifoss

When is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Dettifoss?

You can visit Dettifoss Waterfall all year around , but as part of the Diamond Circle route, we won’t recommend that you visit during our winter season here on the island – the weather can cause sudden road closures, or it might simply be too unpleasant to allow for a relaxing visit to the falls.

What is the Best Time of the Day to Visit Dettifoss?

This will largely depend on the season and the side you’ll be viewing Dettifoss from. The summer season is our peak season here on the island, so you can expect peak-season crowds to flock to this major attraction.

During this time, we recommend that you plan a visit early morning or late afternoon when the crowds are fewer . We would recommend the same times of day when viewing the waterfall from the east side for the sole reason that the parking lot does not have many parking spots.

How Much Time Should I Spend at Dettifoss?

This will 100% be your own prerogative, but generally, visitors tend to spend between 2-3 hours at Dettifoss which includes the hikes .

Dettifoss view

The Dettifoss Waterfall Hike

Although they are referred to as hikes, we merely see them as short walks to Dettifoss. As we already mentioned, the 800-meter hike on the west side is fairly easy, but does tend to get pretty muddy and slippery . This is because the west side gets most of the mist and spray created by the powerful waterfall. There is also a lower viewing deck (our personal favorite since it allows you to get very close to the waterfall).

The east side’s 400-meter walk might be shorter in distance, but can take slightly longer than the 800-meter walk because it gets pretty steep and rocky in places . And, as we already touched on, the parking on that side is limited, so you’ll be well-advised to come early or a little later to ensure that you get a spot.

How to Get to Dettifoss Waterfall

There are various ways to get to Dettifoss. You can choose from the following:

Taking a Flight

Even though you won’t be able to catch a direct flight to the waterfall itself, there are daily flights from Reykjavik to Akureyri. You can then rent a car at Akureyri and drive the 2 hours to Dettifoss. This is a great option if you don’t have much time on the island.

Taking a Guided Tour

Dettifoss is one of the stars of the show of many a guided tour here on the island. Some tours are day tours specifically dedicated to Detttifoss, whilst others are multi-day holiday package tours that merely include Dettifoss as one of their stops. Since Selfoss waterfall is so close to Dettifoss, most tours include a visit to both Dettifoss and Selfoss.

dettifoss waterfall hike

Taking a Self-drive

We are firm believers that a self-drive is the best way to explore the island, since it’s most convenient, and you stay in full control of your time and trip itinerary . For quick day outings to Dettifoss, you’ll need to be traveling from either Myvatn or Akureyri.

If you’re driving from the capital city for an overnight or as part of a road trip, you’ll need to take the Ring Road till you reach the roads that will take you to the various viewing decks (once again, it’ll remain up to you which side you want to view the waterfall). If you take Road 862, you’ll go to the west side of the waterfall. This is a paved road.

Road 864 will take you to the east side of Dettifoss. This is an unpaved road that should not be taken on without a 4x4 vehicle and is generally closed during the colder months of the year. The overall journey from Reykjavík to Dettifoss will take you about 7 hours .

If you are planning to overnight in the area, we suggest you book at one of the following accommodation options (whichever suits your preferences and your pocket):

Dettifoss Waterfall; the Most Powerful First Impression

Unless you meet the love of your life during your visit to the island, Dettifoss, despite being the second most powerful waterfall in Europe, will definitely be the most powerful first impression in Iceland – quite literally. So, whether you’re planning on making it a day trip or a road trip, be sure to rent a car in Iceland and not miss out on this spectacular natural wonder.

Referred to by some as ´ The Beast ' in comparison to 'The Beauty' of  Goðafoss , Dettifoss is known for its  power   rather than it’s appearance. That said, the waterfall is stunning; it’s extremely large and the  mist from the falls is visible from several miles away , as well as the rainbows which form in it. The  roar of the fall , however, cannot be heard until you get a lot closer than you might expect! There’s a great observational view platform, suitable for a small group, which overlooks the fall and the countryside. But be prepared to get wet! With the amount of mist that carries in the area around the waterfall, you’re going to need to bring waterfalls!

How was Dettifoss Formed?

It is true that the name ‘ Dettifoss ’ could be loosely translated as  ' The Collapsing Waterfall '  but don't let that put you off! So long as you  keep to the paths  it is completely safe!

Dettifoss is fed from the mighty glacier river  Jökulsá á Fjöllum , which comes from the biggest ice cap in Europe,  Vatnajökull glacier . Meltwater flows off the glacier and travels through Jökulsá until it finally reaches the Dettifoss waterfall. Jökulsá á fjöllum is the second largest river in Iceland and eventually flows out to the  Greenland Sea .

Where is Dettifoss?

GPS POINTS N65° 48' 53.801" W16° 22' 59.766"

Dettifoss is located in  North Iceland , North of the Ring Road on the  Diamond Circle   route . Roughly  330 miles from   Reykjavik , visitors are likely to spend at least a weekends road trip in the North Iceland region to maximize their time in this action-packed, remote side of the island. As a base, you may want to look into staying in the large, Northern town of  Akureyri , 150 km (95 miles) from the waterfall.

How to get to Dettifoss Waterfall

If you drive to Dettifoss from  Reykjavík  in one hit, the journey will take   over 7 hours !  We don’t recommend this - you’ll omit so many landmarks worth stopping for! From  Akureyri  - the largest town in the north of Iceland,   the waterfall is   just 2 hours away  - following the  Þjóðvegur road to Hólsfjallavegur.

Passing the sign for  Mývatn , you need to turn onto  road 862 . This short stretch will lead you to the  West   bank of the waterfall and is a gravel road, however,   in bad conditions it is closed off . The conditions of gravel roads in Iceland can vary, so travelers are prewarned to be aware of road conditions at all times and adjust driving speed to the conditions most appropriate.

ring road aerial view close to namafjall area

As a general rule, if the road is closed off it is probably not worth the risk of finding another way in ( Road 864 ) as the fall itself will be dangerous and slippery. Th e   East side of the waterfall can also be reached via Road 864,  but the roads are less safe and part of the route is a simple dirt track, which is potentially hazardous during the winter. Road 864 closes due to snow or wet conditions and is often out of access from November - end of May.

What else can I do near Dettifoss?

  • A  34km hiking trail  goes along from   Dettifoss to the canyon at Asbyrgi  - a well-forested horse-shoe shaped canyon in  Oxarfjordur
  • Akureyri   or ‘the  Capital of the North ’ is the biggest settlement in North Iceland. With a  population of  over ten thousand   people , it is the largest town outside of Greater Reykjavík.

  • Upstream, only a quick 1 km (0.6 miles) hike away you will find   Selfoss Waterfall
  • Jökulsárgljúfur   canyon  is North of Dettifoss and makes up a small part of  Vatnajökull National Park

When is the best time to visit Dettifoss?

Most  visitors tend to spend   up to 3 hours  at Dettifoss and we would suggest 2.

During the summer the fall is at it's mightiest, with an average water flow of  400 m3/s  and is  more accessible  in the way that during winter the fall cannot be accessed without the aid of yak-trax or crampons because of the risk of slipping on ice. During the winter, icicles hang from the rocks and snow paints the hills, but you can only see this for a few hours before the sun completely sets, and the waterfall is not illuminated at night or during the darkness.

As mentioned, Road 864 can be closed during the entire winter season, due to heavy snow or wet and muddy conditions. The road does not open until late May or early June. There is a new, paved road which is passable for all vehicles from Dettifoss, South to Road 1, from the West side river bank but this road is out of service from January until the beginning of April.

  • When driving the potential icy, gravel roads you will find  studded winter tires  to be a life saver!
  • Get  reliable  reports on road conditions  prior to driving there in the winter
  • Even with a  four-wheel-drive  vehicle , driving in winter can be challenging, if you’re not comfortable driving in harsh conditions, be sure to go with an  organized tour
  • The waterfall will be less busy in between buses of tourists and at later times of the day
  • The footpath is eroding away in places  and the drop is quite something, so  take care .
  • Parking in the parking lot is free
  • Climbing the steps could be icy so  be careful !
  • The walk down the path that leads to the falls has a reputation of being increasingly windy

Dettifoss is no stranger to the big screen , making it’s Hollywood debut in the Ridley Scott, science fiction, blockbuster Prometheus in 2012, in the opening scene none the less! Set in the later years of the 21st century, the story focuses on the crew of the spaceship, Prometheus.

In 2013, Dettifoss returned to the screen in the movie ‘Oblivion’ starring Tom Cruise.

Icelandic backdrops feature heavily in the background throughout the film, helping to create a unique post-apocalyptic future. Filming took place at the Hrossaborg Crater in North-East Iceland, with multiple other scenes taking place near the mighty waterfall.

Given the distinct size and power of Dettifoss, I wonder if we’ll see it return to Hollywood some time again, in the future!

Your Guide to Dettifoss Waterfall in Iceland

Dettifoss

Iceland has 10 000 waterfalls scattered all across the island, with many famous falls offering visitors a very unique experience. But none can offer what Dettifoss Waterfall has to offer (and this is an officially recorded fact).

So, if you’ve got an upcoming trip to the island or just want to know more about this impressive waterfall, read on. We give you the lowdown on Dettifoss.

Dettifoss Falls

Below you will find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we receive about Dettifoss Waterfall:

Where is Dettifoss Waterfall?

Dettifoss Waterfall is situated in the famous Vatnajökull National Park in the northeastern part of Iceland. Since it is very close to the popular Diamond Circle route, many opt to add the falls as one of their road trip stops.

What Does Dettifoss Mean?

When directly translating the name Dettifoss, it loosely means “the collapsing waterfall”. It’s very much a literal situation of “let’s call it as we see it”.

Dettifoss in Iceland

How was Dettifoss Formed?

Like so many other natural wonders here on the island, Dettifoss is the result of Iceland’s volcanic activity. Volcanic eruptions underneath the Vatnajökull Glacier caused major flooding. To truly grasp the scale of these floods, it’s important to take note that Jökulsargljufur Canyon (the canyon Dettifoss plunges into) is 28 kilometers long and boasts 100-meter-high cliff walls – the floods were so extreme that they created this beast of a canyon in just a matter of days!

Without these floods, there would be no raging glacier water, and no canyon for Dettifoss to be a waterfall in the first place. It’s also important to note that the initial extreme flooding was 9000 years ago, but that there have been significant floods after that as well that continuously impact the waterfall and the canyon. Till today, the volcanic activity underneath the glacier continues and the Land of Fire and Ice always remains an ever-changing landscape.

Dettifoss Waterfall

Is Dettifoss the Most Powerful Fall in Iceland?

Absolutely! In fact, till quite recently, Dettifoss was considered to also be the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe ‘till it officially lost its title to the Rhine Falls in Switzerland. But despite taking up second place, Dettifoss remains as impressive as always with up to 11581225 liters of water tumbling over the cliffs EVERY MINUTE!

How High is Dettifoss Waterfall?

Dettifoss Waterfall isn’t one of our highest waterfalls here in Iceland , clocking in at 44 meters. But it’s the waterfall’s overall size when taking into account that it’s also 100 meters wide, and mass amounts of water plummeting to the ground that makes it such a spectacular sight.

How Do You Get to Dettifoss?

You can choose to view Dettifoss from the west side or the east side – both sides require what many call a hike, but we can’t refer to these distances as anything else but a short walk from the parking lot.

How Long is the Hike to Dettifoss Waterfall?

That depends on which side of Dettifoss you’ll be doing your viewing of the falls. If you opt to check out the falls on the west side, you’ll need to take the 800-meter pathway from the parking lot to the viewing deck. On the east side, the walk is slightly longer. From the parking lot, you’ll need to walk 400 meters down to Dettifoss. But whichever walk you decide on, none should take you longer than 10 minutes.

Dettifoss Waterfall in Iceland

When is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Dettifoss?

Dettifoss is open to the public all year round, but many recommend visiting the site during the warmer months since sudden road closures due to winter weather conditions can derail your Dettifoss outing.

What is the Best Time of the Day to Visit Dettifoss?

This will depend on the time of year you visit Dettifoss and from which side you will be viewing the waterfall. If you’re planning on visiting during our busy summer season, you’ll need to get an early start to your day in order to avoid the peak season crowds. The same goes for when you’re planning on viewing Dettifoss from the east side since the parking lot has very limited parking space.

How Much Time Should I Spend at Dettifoss?

Well, this will depend solely on you. Generally, most visitors spend between 2-3 hours at Dettifoss (and this includes the walk to and from the falls).

The Dettifoss Waterfall Hike

As we already touched on, there are short “hikes” involved in viewing the falls from the west and the east side. The 800-meter pathway on the west side is a very easy trail, except for the fact that it can get quite muddy and slippery (the west side tends to get a lot of mist and spray from the waterfall). Alternatively, you can walk to the lower view deck which we think is much more impressive since you get pretty up close and personal with the falls. The walk down to the lower deck can get pretty steep though.

The 400-meter walk on the east side is slightly longer and gets pretty steep and rocky (important to note if you have elderly or kids in your party). The parking lot is very small so we recommend that you come early in the day to get a spot.

Dettifoss, Most powefull waterfall in Europe

How to Get to Dettifoss Waterfall

There are a variety of ways that you can travel to Dettifoss Waterfall:

Although there are no direct flights to Dettifoss, taking a plane from Reykjavik to Akureyri might be a good option if you’ve got limited time on the island and are not planning on taking a road trip around the country. From Akureyri, you can just rent a car and drive the 2 hours to the falls.

You will find plenty of Dettifoss tours here on the island. Some are guided day tours, whilst others simply have the falls as one of the stops on a multi-day tour package. Most of these tours will also be combo tours where you’ll be stopping at both Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfall since they are so close to each other.

You can also opt for a self-drive, either as a day outing or as part of a road trip. Please note that we recommend traveling from Akureyri or Myvatn if you just want to do a day trip. Traveling from Reykjavik to Dettifoss without making a road trip out of it will be madness (you’ll spend 7 hours just driving there).

Either way, you will need to get on the Ring Road if you want to head to Dettifoss. From there take Road 862 to view the falls from the west side. This is a paved road. Or you can take Road 864 to view the falls from the east side, but this is an unpaved road that’s generally closed during the colder months and we recommend you only take on with a 4x4 vehicle.

Dettifoss Waterfall; the Ultimate Display of Nature’s Power

There are no two ways about it; standing next to the falls is a humbling experience. Not just because of the size or the immense power with which the volumes of water crash down from the cliffs, but because it also stands as an ode to the powerful forces that created this incredible place in the first place.

Dettifoss may no longer be the most powerful waterfall in Europe, but it certainly sends a powerful message; that nature is to be both respected and appreciated.

Dettifoss

  • What to see
  • Lake Myvatn and East Iceland

Located in Vatnajökull National Park , Dettifoss is one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland  . Despite being difficult to access, it's well worth a visit.

Dettifoss is a spectacular waterfall, located in the surreal lunar landscapes of the enormous Vatnajökull National Park . At 330 feet (100 metres) wide and with an 144 foot (44 metre) drop, the waterfall stands out for being the second most powerful in Europe in terms of water flow!

Seeing the raging waters of the  Jökulsá á Fjöllum River cascading in the middle of such wild scenery makes visiting Dettifoss an excellent stop on your trip around Iceland.

Just a few kilometres from Dettifoss is  Selfoss , a smaller but equally mesmerising waterfall. It can be reached on foot, hiking on a stony but accessible path. The reward for your walk is a beautiful waterfall flowing down dramatic basalt columns .

How to visit Dettifoss?

Due to its location "in the middle of nowhere" and the poor condition of the roads that lead to it, some people choose not to include Dettifoss on their route through Iceland, therefore missing out on one of the country's most outstanding natural wonders .

If you haven't booked an organised excursion to visit the falls, the only way to visit is by rental car : however, it can only usually be visited during the summer months between July and August. There are three different routes:

  • Route 862 from Ásbyrgi : to reach Dettifoss from the north of Iceland, it's a 45 minute drive on Route 862. The road is semi-paved and usually open from June to the end of September.
  • Route 862 from Reykjahlid : if you're staying in Reykjahlid, drive along the Ring Road to Route 862, which you'll take for another 25 minutes until reaching Dettifoss car park. This section of the road may even be closed in summer, so always check the state of the roads in advance.
  • Route 864 : while normally open from the end of May until the beginning of October, this road is only suitable for off-road vehicles.

Located in Northeast Iceland, Dettifoss is one of Iceland’s most famous and stunning waterfalls . It is more known for its size rather than its appearance, given that it is considered the second most powerful and voluminous waterfall in Europe (some sources even refer to it as the first one): it measures 45 metres high and 100 metres wide! For this reason, Dettifoss is often referred to by some as “The Beast” in comparison to “The Beauty” of Godafoss, another incredible waterfall in North Iceland.

The powerful Dettifoss is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland

Dettifoss’ waters come from the glacier river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, which flows from Vatnajökull glacier, the biggest ice cap in Iceland and in Europe. The waters that flow through Dettifoss are rich in sediments and they reach the Greenland Sea at the very end.

The name “Dettifoss” means “The Collapsing Waterfall” and, when you stand in front of it, you can understand why it is named like that. The waterfall falls down into a canyon as if it was collapsing, but don’t be afraid of its name - visiting Dettifoss is completely safe as long as you follow the safety precautions (more about this below).

As mentioned before, Dettifoss waterfall is located in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, up north from the Ring Road, the road that encircles the country . In this map you can see the exact location of the Dettifoss waterfall:

This powerful waterfall is located roughly 300 miles (482 kilometres) from Reykjavik, Iceland’s most populated city, and it takes around 7 hours drive to get there. The closest city to Dettifoss is Akureyri, the Capital of the North of Iceland, which is only 95 miles away (150 kilometres) and 2 hours drive. As a base to visit Dettifoss, you may want to stay in Akureyri if you are driving the Ring Road clockwise.

Dettifoss waterfall is one of the sites that make up the so-called Diamond Circle of North Iceland , along with Húsavík, the Ásbyrgi Canyon and Lake Mývatn. The Diamond Circle is often considered the Golden Circle’s brother in the North of Iceland and it attracts many visitors worldwide each year.

Absolutely! Dettifoss waterfall is within easy access by car so it is a convenient detour for those who are self-driving in Iceland around the Ring Road. However, the road conditions and the access to the waterfall change depending on the season so it is important to be prepared with the right car and check if the roads are open and safe to drive.

Make sure you check the road conditions before visiting Dettifoss waterfall in Iceland

If you travel to Dettifoss waterfall straight from Reykjavik city, the driving will take over 7 hours. However, we don’t recommend this, since you will skip all the attractions along the route. The best way to get to Dettifoss waterfall is either from Akureyri, the largest town in the North of Iceland, which only requires a 2 hours drive; or on your way from the East of Iceland, before reaching Lake Myvatn.

To reach Dettifoss, you need to follow the Ring Road and then take the detour to the waterfall. It is possible to visit Dettifoss from two sides and there are two roads that lead to the viewing platforms.

Road 862 to Dettifoss Waterfall

Route 862 (paved road) will take you to the western side of the Dettifoss waterfall. The road is paved and usually open from April until December. If you’re coming from Asbyrgi, the drive is about 30 minutes. If you're arriving from Reykjahlid, you will reach the Dettifoss parking lot in around 40 minutes. This route is suitable for all cars.

Road 864 to Dettifoss waterfall

Route 864 (unpaved road) will take you to the eastern side of Dettifoss. This road normally opens from the end of May until the beginning of October and is closed during the winter season, since it can be hazardous. Although it seems that you don’t need a 4x4 vehicle, it is a gravel road with potholes and uneven terrain, so you need to drive carefully and very slowly.

In this map you can see both routes from Ring Road Route 1:

The drive from the west side to the east side takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Regardless of the route that you choose, it is important to check the road conditions on road.is before heading to Dettifoss, especially if you’re visiting outside of the summer season. As a general rule, if Route 862 is closed that means that the waterfalls can be dangerous and slippery, so it is not worth trying to find another way to get there.

Which side of Dettifoss is best?

That being said, the western side of Dettifoss is the easiest to drive because it has paved road 862 and is accessible for all types of cars. This side of the waterfall also has the golden hour light in both summer and winter, so you will be able to photograph Dettifoss at its best.

Rainbow at Dettifoss waterfall

The majority of the visitors arrive at Dettifoss by road 862, and that also explains why the parking space is new and large. If you are renting a car in Iceland and want to play safe, we recommend getting to Dettifoss from the western side.

If you are feeling adventurous, are coming in summer and have the right type of car, you can also take route 864 to Dettifoss for a different experience.

No matter what side you choose, you will need to walk a bit until you get to Dettifoss waterfall. However, the hiking paths are easy and do not take long. If you have arrived from the western side, you will need to walk for about 15 minutes on a mostly flat trail until you arrive at the viewpoint. If, on the contrary, you have taken the eastern side, it will take around 10 minutes to walk along rocky terrain.

Usually, the whole visit to Dettifoss takes around two hours if you are making the loop, but you can stay longer or shorter depending on your travel plan and how much time you have. On average, most visitors tend to spend up to 3 hours at Dettifoss waterfall.

The experience of visiting Dettifoss varies depending on the season.

During the summer months, the waterfall is at its most powerful state, with an average water flow of 400 m3/s. The roads to get to Dettifoss are also more accessible and suitable for all types of cars (should you decide to take Route 862). This is especially important if you are going to rent a car for your Iceland vacation . If you’re looking for a scenic and easy drive, we recommend visiting Dettifoss from June through August.

Dettifoss is the second most powerful waterfall in Europe

Nonetheless, exploring Dettifoss in summer will also mean that there will be crowds throughout the day, like at any natural famous site in Iceland. Summer in Iceland is the high season and most travellers choose to come during this period. If you really want to visit Dettifoss without the crowds, you might want to arrive in the late afternoon.

If you are visiting Iceland in winter and you decide to take the detour to the Dettifoss waterfall, you will be rewarded with snowy and frozen landscapes. However, despite the beautiful views, the hours of daylight are very few before sunset and the waterfall is not illuminated at night or during the darkness, so you will need to plan your visit taking this into consideration.

Route 864 is closed during the winter season due to heavy snow or muddy conditions, and it doesn’t open until late May or early June. Also, keep in mind that you will need crampons to access the falls because of the risk of slipping on ice.

Is Dettifoss open all year long?

As mentioned already, the roads to Dettifoss may close due to ice and snow, especially during the winter months. While Dettifoss is open to visitors almost every season, summer is the best, safest and most reliable time of the year to plan your trip to the waterfall.

There are plenty of landmarks that you can visit during your trip to Dettifoss waterfall.

Selfoss Waterfall

Selfoss is a waterfall located very close to Dettifoss, also on the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum in Northern Iceland. Although this waterfall may not be as powerful and voluminous as Dettifoss, it has a great and beautiful appearance, since it is wider and has numerous smaller waterfalls.

Selfoss is only a 30-minute hike from Dettifoss waterfall and they both share the same parking lots. However, to get to Selfoss it is recommended to take Route 864 because you can have a better view from the eastern access, as most of the small waterfalls are on the opposite side. However, you can also reach it from the western side - you will just see it from another perspective.

Hafragilsfoss

Hafragilsfoss is a much smaller waterfall than the previous two, but it is worth a visit if you are exploring the Dettifoss area. Also located in the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, Hafragilsfoss is surrounded by cliffs and its waters fall approximately 30 metres high and 90 metres wide. From the waterfall, you can get impressive views of the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon.

Canyon in Dettifoss, North Iceland

The main viewpoint for the best views of Hafragilsfoss is on the eastern side. However, it is also possible to see it from the western side. To do so, you will just need to follow the indications from the Dettifoss parking lot.

Asbyrgi Canyon

Asbyrgi, whose name means “Shelter of the Gods”, is a stunning horseshoe-shaped canyon in the northeast of Iceland, situated a 35-minute drive (30km) from the Dettifoss waterfall. The Viking settlers believed that it was formed by Sleipnir, Odin’s eight-legged flying horse from Norse mythology, although geologists state that it was created from a catastrophic flood from the Jokulsá glacial river. Asbyrgi is also part of the Diamond Circle of Iceland .

Lake Myvatn

Lake Myvatn is a beautiful volcanic lake filled with small islands, and it is the fourth biggest one in the country. It sits under an active geothermal area and has unique geology, making them one of the most incredible natural attractions in Iceland. Like Dettifoss and Asbyrgi, Lake Myvatn also belongs to the Diamond Circle and can be visited during your trip in the North of Iceland. To arrive at the lake from Dettifoss waterfall, you need to drive for around 50 minutes (60km) to the west.

Akureyri is known as ‘the Capital of the North’ and is the biggest city in North Iceland . It has a population of over ten thousand people and it is the largest town outside of the Greater Reykjavik area. It is located less than 2 hours away from Dettifoss to the west and it is a great base to explore the wonders of the North of Iceland.

Regardless of whether you are going to Dettifoss for the first time or you have already done it before, it is worth remembering some tips and advice that can make your visit more enjoyable:

  • Check the road conditions at Road.is before driving to Dettifoss in winter.
  • Make sure you have winter tires and drive carefully since the roads in winter can be icy and with gravel.
  • Consider renting a 4x4 car , especially if you are planning to access Dettifoss from the gravel road on the east side.
  • You don’t need to pay a fee to stop your car in the parking lot.
  • The walk down the path that takes to the waterfall is known for being windy and climbing the steps could be icy, so be careful!
  • If you want to visit Dettifoss with fewer people, consider going at later times of the day.
  • There is a viewpoint platform suitable for a small group from where you can get great views of the Dettifoss waterfall and the countryside. However, it can get wet, so don’t forget to bring waterproof shoes and outer layers.

Be careful when visiting Dettifoss waterfall since the falls are very steep and it can be icy

Now that you are well informed about everything you need to know to visit Dettifoss waterfall, it is time to start planning your self-drive trip. Dettifoss Waterfall in Iceland

With 10 000 and counting, you’ll find plenty of “foss’s” here in Iceland. But there are a few that simply cannot be missed, and Dettifoss Waterfall is definitely one of them. In this article, we tell you everything there is to know about Dettifoss and what makes this one of the must-visit falls here on the island.

So, if you’re planning an upcoming trip to Iceland or are just curious to know more about one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls, read on – you might be surprised at what you’ll learn.

Quick Facts About Dettifoss Waterfall

  • Dettifoss loosely translates to “collapsing waterfall ” since it looks as though it is collapsing into the earth.
  • Dettifoss Waterfall is a staggering 100 meters wide and 44 meters tall.
  • Visiting Dettifoss is usually a three for 1 type of deal since most come for Dettifoss, but also grab the opportunity to visit Selfoss Waterfall and Hafragilsfoss Waterfall, that’s just a short walk from there.
  • Dettifoss is the largest waterfall in Iceland and plummets into the largest canyon in Iceland called Jokulsargljufur.
  • The falls are renowned for being the most powerful in Iceland, with an average of 365,292 liters of water rushing over the cliffs every SECOND !

 Dettifoss Waterfall

  • The rushing water is so powerful that it actually makes the rocks surrounding the falls vibrate.
  • Whilst Dettifoss was believed to have been the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe, it has had to take second place to the Rhine Falls in Switzerland.
  • The falls’ power and size should come as no surprise, seeing that the falls are being fed by the largest glacier in the entire Europe; Vatnajökull.
  • You better come prepared with a raincoat and waterproof clothes and gear when visiting Dettifoss. This powerful waterfall creates such dense mist and spray that you will get completely drenched otherwise.
  • The water of the falls may appear to be a bit murky or milky. This is just because of the sediment that’s in the glacial water.
  • Dettifoss served as inspiration to composer Jon Leifs for his work by the same name.
  • If the falls look familiar, it’s probably because it’s graced our screens in the opening of the popular sci-fi movie Prometheus.

What Makes Dettifoss Waterfall So Special?

Dettifoss’s claim to fame is its size and power , especially the fact that it has the title of one of Europe’s most powerful falls . Experiencing the rushing water and the rumbling underneath your feet when standing at the falls is something one can’t explain to those who haven’t been there yet.

How Was Dettifoss Falls Formed?

How Dettifoss was created in the first place will always remain a bit of a theory, since it’s very hard to prove the exact origin of something or an event that happened thousands of years ago. But, as far as the geologists are concerned, Dettifoss was the result of what can only be expected from a place called the Land of Fire and Ice.

There are 8 subglacial volcanoes that can be found underneath Vatnajökull Glacier . One can just imagine what the result of just one eruption underneath the gigantic mass of ice must look like, never mind multiple eruptions. Yet, this is exactly what is believed took place.

Dettifoss formation

Numerous eruptions caused major glacial floods (9000 of them if you believe the history buffs) that carved their way through the earth, creating all sorts of caverns, canyons, and crevices, which includes what you see at Dettifoss today . The melting glacial water of Vatnajökull is what feeds Dettifoss ‘till this day, although multiple major eruptions may no longer be the main cause, but more global climate change.

Where is Dettifoss Waterfall in Iceland?

Dettifoss can be found in the largest national park in Iceland; Vatnajökull National Park . The park can be found in the northeastern part of the island. The falls are conveniently located close to popular routes such as the Ring Road and the Diamond Circle .

How Do You Get to Dettifoss?

Well, getting to the actual falls from the parking lot will require a short walk and will look different depending on whether you’re viewing the falls from the east or the west. On the western side, you’ll find an 800-meter pathway , and whilst the trail is easy to navigate, it can get quite muddy and slippery because of all the mist and spray from the waterfall coming that way.

On the western side, you’ll also have the choice of viewing the falls from the upper or lower viewing deck. The 400-meter walk on the eastern side is not quite as easy, so whilst technically shorter, it might take you longer simply because it’s pretty rocky and steep . Getting to Dettifoss from somewhere else on the island is another story altogether, and you will have the following options to choose from:

Getting to Dettifoss Via a Plane

This is a good option if you have limited time on the island or just don’t want to spend so much time in the car (especially if you have the elderly and young kids in your party). Simply catch one of the flights from Reykjavik to Akureyri and then just rent a car to drive the 2 hours to Dettifoss.

Getting to Dettifoss Via a Tour

You will find plenty of guided day tours to Dettifoss, as well as multi-day guided holiday tours that include the falls as a stop. Most of these tours will depart from either Reykjavik or Akureyri, depending on which tour you choose.

How Do You Get to Dettifoss?

Getting to Dettifoss Via a Car

Driving yourself is the best way to visit Dettifoss, especially if you add the falls as part of your road trip itinerary. If you just want to make a day trip out of Dettifoss, we recommend that you depart from Akureyri or Myvatn since merely getting there from Reykjavik will take you about 7 hours.

But if you’re starting your road trip from the capital city, you’ll need to drive north on the Ring Road . Then you just need to take either Road 862 or 864 to take you to the falls. Road 862 is paved and will take you to the west side. Road 864 is unpaved and will take you to the east side. It’s important to note, though, that you cannot take this road on without a 4x4 vehicle, and this road is generally closed during the colder months of the year here on the island.

When is the Best Time to Visit Dettifoss Waterfall in Iceland?

Dettifoss is open to the public all year around , but the falls might be better to visit during the summer months in Iceland (June to September) due to the following reasons:

  • As the island’s most powerful waterfall, the falls create incredible mist and spray that will have you soaked to the bone in no time, unless you’re well-prepared with all sorts of waterproof clothing and gear. And getting wet during the colder months in Iceland is not a pleasant experience at all.
  • It’s easier to drive to the falls in the summertime since the road conditions are easier to navigate. Winter weather conditions can turn quite treacherous, and as we’ve already mentioned, the road to the east side is generally kept closed during the colder months.

Just keep in mind that summer is our busiest season here on the island, so we’ll highly recommend that you visit the falls early morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak season crowds.

Location: 65.814666, -16.384576

Region: Northeastern

Height: 148 ft (45 m)

River: Jökulsá á Fjöllum

Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, with a water flow of  6,186 cfs (193 cms). The waterfall is created by the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, where it spreads out 328 ft (100 m) and plummets  148 ft (45 m) into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. You can find two more impressive waterfalls within the canyon, Selfoss and Hafragilsfoss.

Dettifoss has similar geography and structure to the famous Gullfoss . These two waterfalls have been compared as “the beauty” (Gullfoss) and “the beast” (Dettifoss). Dettifoss is also part of the Diamond Circle, Northern Iceland’s version of the Golden Circle. Within the Diamond Circle, you can also find the historic Goðafoss .

The Jökulsá á Fjöllum flows from the Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. Iceland’s waterfalls are often known for their beautiful clear and sometimes vividly blue water, but Dettifoss usually has a high silt content. The river’s course flows through active volcanic areas, giving the water a range of colors from gray to brown. This does not detract from the beauty of this waterfall, as it only helps demonstrate its might.

dettifoss p1

Dettifoss’s waterfall has been known to climb up to 20,000 cfs in the summer months, but that still is small compared to the waterfall’s history. In the past, Dettifoss was prone to massive glacial outburst floods due to the volcanic activity in the Barðarbunga caldera, which lies below the glacier. Research from Edinburgh University suggests that Dettifoss could have been formed in days. The volcanic activity is still active, with the last eruption in August 2014. With the looming threat of more activity and flooding, Dettisfoss could be permanently altered in the future.

Dettifoss has the potential to be the most powerful resource in Iceland for a hydroelectric power plant, and one was proposed to be built. Luckily the plan was scrapped due to the porous nature of the volcanic bedrock.

The power of Dettifoss, the basalt columns, and the canyon formed by the Jökulsá á Fjöllum create a unique vista that can be described as “alien.” Hollywood directors have sought out  Dettifoss in their films. In the opening scene of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, you can see that waterfall featured. It was also featured in the movie Oblivion starring Tom Cruise a year later.

Length: 0.0 mi

Elevation gain: 000 ft

Route Type: Out & back {Check All Trails}

Dettifoss has two separate hiking trails, the eastside, and the westside. It is recommended to plan which side of the waterfall you wish to visit, as the directions to each side of the waterfall will be different. See the section below for more details on directions. Both hikes are comparable in length, but accessibility is a significant difference. Both hikes include a view of Selfoss. There is an additional option to hike to Hafragilsfoss from both sides.

The West Side hike is the most popular path as the road to access the parking lot is paved. Tour buses access the waterfall via this route too. This path is well marked and considered an easy hike in good conditions. However, it is known to become slippery due to snow, ice, and rain. At Dettifoss, there is an observatory platform, but the west side is often reported to be mistier.

dettifoss-h2

The East Side is widely considered to have the best view of Dettifoss. This hike allows you to stand on a cliff next to the waterfall to get a terrifying and majestic view at the same time. This side of the fall is less friendly to visitors as there is no railing but instead slippery rocks. This is also the most challenging side to access the waterfall but is considered worth it by many. The access road is gravel and roughly 20 mi (32 km) to the parking lot.

Viewable from Road?: No

Nearest Major City: Akureyri

Distance from Reykjavík: 323 mi (520 km)

As mentioned above, Dettifoss has two access points, the East and Westside. Google Maps list both areas, but searching “Dettifoss” defaults to the eastside. Instead, search for Dettifoss (East Side) or Dettifoss (West Side) . The parking lots are also listed on Google. Dettifoss (West Side) is around a 6 hr and 45 min drive from Reykjavík. Akureyri, the “Capital of the North,” is the nearest major city to Dettifoss. However, the beautiful small town of Húsavík, which was the town featured in the film Netflix’s Eurovision, is also nearby.

While the drive is long, finding the waterfall is simple. From Reykjavík, follow the Ring Road (Route 1) north. Then you will turn left onto Dettifossvegur (Route 862) for the westside or Hólsfjallavegur (Route 864) for the eastside.

Tucked away in the Múlagljúfur canyon, you can find two waterfalls, Múlafoss and Hangandifoss. Múlafoss is the smaller of the two and more challenging to access, but it still adds plenty of beauty to the canyon. Múlafoss is 331 ft with multiple drops, and most drops remain hidden, but the single 176 ft drop is visible.

Dettifoss Waterfall in Iceland

Guide to the Powerful Dettifoss Waterfall in Iceland

Dettifoss often hailed as the "Niagara of Europe," is a breathtaking natural wonder nestled in the northeastern region of Iceland. This awe-inspiring waterfall is renowned for its raw power, striking beauty, and the captivating landscapes surrounding it. Dettifoss directly translates to "Falling Falls" or "Tumbling Falls".

Dettifoss Waterfall

Dettifoss is situated within Vatnajökull National Park, in the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum River. The Vatnajökull National Park was established in 2008 and is the largest national park in Europe - covering approximately 14% of Iceland's land area. The crown jewel of the park is the Vatnajökull Glacier, the largest ice cap in Europe. Besides Dettifoss, Vatnajökull National Park is home to several natural wonders, including Svartifoss and Jökulsárlón.

Vatnajökull National Park is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park's diverse landscapes, including glaciers, volcanoes, and waterfalls, contribute to its recognition as a site of outstanding natural significance.

The fall’s remote location adds to the allure of the waterfall, providing visitors with a unique and unspoiled natural experience. The waterfall is positioned amidst a rugged and captivating landscape, surrounded by lava formations, basalt columns, and striking cliffs that enhance its dramatic presence.

Accessibility

Dettifoss Waterfall

Despite its remote location, Dettifoss is relatively accessible to visitors. A well-maintained trail from the parking area provides various viewpoints, allowing visitors to experience the waterfall from different angles. The short hike makes it feasible for a wide range of visitors, including those with varying fitness levels.

Dettifoss is accessible from two sides: the west bank and the east bank. The two options are both viable. However, there are a few differences in the road conditions and amenities.

Dettifoss can be accessed from its west side via Route 862, a paved road constructed in 2011. Route 862 offers year-round access to Dettifoss to varying degrees, whereas an older gravel road, Route 864, provides access to the east side but is typically navigable only in the summer.

Minimal amenities are available on the west bank, including a pit toilet, a well-maintained hiking path, and a viewing platform. The round trip from the parking lot to the waterfall is approximately 3 kilometres (1,8 miles). On the east bank, there is an information panel managed by Vatnajökull National Park staff, a public toilet, and a trail leading to the waterfall. The trail on the east side is a total of 1,5 kilometres (approximately 1 mile), round trip.

Dettifoss is a featured attraction on the Diamond Circle, a popular tourist route encompassing Húsavík and Lake Mývatn in North Iceland.

The Most Powerful Waterfall

dettifoss tour from reykjavik

Dettifoss Waterfall is known as the most powerful waterfall in Iceland. It is also the second most powerful waterfall in Europe. The waterfall boasts an average water discharge of approximately 193 cubic metres (6.816 cubic feet) or 193.000 litres (50.985 gallons) per second, creating a thunderous roar as the glacial water plummets over a 44 metre (144 feet) high and 100 metres (328 feet) wide precipice. The sheer force of the water generates a fine mist that envelops the surroundings, creating rainbows on sunny days and contributing to the magical atmosphere of the area.

Geological Marvel

Jökulsargljufur

Dettifoss owes its grandeur to the Vatnajökull Glacier, the largest ice cap in Europe, feeding the Jökulsá á Fjöllum River. It tumbles down into the great canyon, Jökulsárgljúfur. The surrounding black basalt columns, a result of ancient volcanic activity, add to the geological allure of the area, showcasing Iceland's unique and dynamic geological history. The Jökulsá River flows along the northern volcanic belt of Iceland and has been affected by glacier floods and lava.

Glaciers and Waterfalls

At Perlan Museum in Reykjavík, you can explore glaciers and their importance for Iceland's climate. They are an essential source of fresh water for the island, as well as adding beauty and magic to the diverse nature. As Dettifoss is fed by Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Iceland, the waterfall is a direct effect of the changing climates.
