Iceland’s Diamond Circle: A Complete Guide for an Epic Road Trip

The Diamond Circle in Iceland is a not-to-be-missed loop drive. It’s in the northeast of Iceland and combines some of Iceland’s most stunning natural attractions with coastal views looking towards the Arctic Circle…all without the crowds elsewhere in Iceland!

Northern Iceland’s Diamond Circle is well-worth a spot on your Iceland itinerary!

The great news is that veering off-the-beaten-path in Iceland is risk-free. The island country will take your breath away at every turn. The more you venture away from the popular Golden Circle sights closer to Reyjkavik, the more Iceland will reward you for your adventurous efforts.

Read on for everything you need to plan your time along the Diamond Circle!

I traveled to Iceland in May and drove the Ring Road. In all honesty, I spent a few days deciding if I should stay in southern Iceland and focus my time there. But, the more I researched, the more I wanted to visit the north of Iceland, too.

In particular, the Diamond Circle caught my eye because there were so many spectacular things to see and do in a relatively compact area.

Where is the Diamond Circle?

Located in the northeastern part of Iceland, the Diamond Circle includes popular base towns like Myvatn and Husavik. Akureyri is the capital of Iceland’s north and is just 50 miles west of Myvatn.

The absolute best way to get to this part of Iceland and explore the Diamond Circle is by car. The little public transportation there is in this part of Iceland doesn’t generally cater to visitors by stopping at touristic places or driving scenic routes like the Diamond Circle.

Car rentals are widely available at the Reyjkavik airport and will be the most convenient way to maximize your time throughout your entire trip to Iceland.

Camper vans are also quite popular to rent and allow you to live and sleep out of the van while road tripping in Iceland.

It’s always better to have a visual! This Diamond Circle Map is available for free at hotels and points of interest in the area.

Diamond Circle Route

If you’re driving Route1-Ring Road in a counterclockwise direction (what I did and recommend), then you’d turn right onto Route 862 to begin this loop drive and eventually get onto Route 85 until meeting back up with Ring Road. (Alternatively, you’d use Route 864 if you were planning to see the east sides of the Dettifoss and Selfoss waterfalls. More on this in a moment.)

If you’re coming from the opposite direction, you’d turn left onto Route 85 first to make your way up past Husavik and around the coast before heading south on either Routes 862 or 864.

The downside to this is you’ll be driving on the opposite side of the coastline, with the lane of opposite direction traffic potentially blocking photo opportunities and making turns to pull off a bit trickier.

Even though I was driving Ring Road in a counterclockwise direction, I continued on to Myvatn first and spent some time exploring the sights in and around town before staying at this Myvatn hotel for the night. The next morning I drove east towards Route 862 because Dettifoss Waterfall was to be my first stop of the day along the Diamond Circle.

What Kind of Car is Necessary to Drive the Diamond Circle?

diamond circle tours iceland

You don’t need a 4WD to drive the Diamond Circle. Route 1-Ring Road, Route 85, and Route 862 are paved roads.

However , if you decide to visit the east side of the Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls, you’ll need to drive Route 864 which is a rough, pot-hole marked, gravel road. I would only drive this particular route with a 4WD. You could easily bottom out with a low-to-the-ground car, not to mention suffer tire or window damage. This Iceland travel tips guide has more information about car types and driving in Iceland.

Past these 2 best waterfalls in Iceland , continuing on this road to Asbrygi Canyon, you’ll find the road conditions get worse from the previous section.

Also, keep in mind, Route 864 closes for winter and doesn’t generally re-open until summer. This website shows real-time information about Iceland roads, their conditions, and whether or not a road is open or closed.

ProTip: If you decide to drive Route 864, remember to factor in extra time. These rough, gravel roads often mean you can only travel at very slow speeds. Think 5-15mph. The distance may be short but the time spent driving can really cut into your Diamond Circle itinerary.

Diamond Circle Timing Logistics

At only 155 miles, you could certainly drive the Diamond Circle in a day. But, I’d recommend spending at least 1 night in the area if you can. There are accommodations in towns like Myvatn, Akureyri, and Husavik, as well as other guest houses and hotels in the area.

The Diamond Circle loop is best driven in the late spring and summer. You’ll have 18+ hours of daylight to drive and explore the sights along this spectacular drive.

Visiting northern Iceland is also best from mid-May to September because the winter snow will likely have (mostly) melted away.

Snow melts faster in the south of Iceland than it does up north. It’s not uncommon to have popular places like Skogafoss Waterfall and the Waterfall Way hiking trail above it turning green as plants come out of their winter slumber. While up north, the trail leading to the viewpoint on the west side of Dettifoss can be completely covered by a couple of inches of snow.

Where to Stay on the Diamond Circle

diamond circle tours iceland

There are a few central points along the Diamond Circle on the northern coast of Iceland with hotels and guest houses. I recommend basing yourself in a town so you are closer to services like gas and food.

Depending on your Diamond Circle itinerary, more than 1 base may make sense. For example, you might choose to stay in Myvatn and day trip the Diamond Circle before finishing in Akureyri. Or you might choose to split the Diamond Circle over several days and use Husavik as a stop for the night before continuing on towards Akureyri the next day.

I stayed 1 night in Myvatn and then another night in Akureyri. This allowed enough time to visit the places along the Diamond Circle and in this stretch of northeastern Iceland, while still keeping my progress steady around Ring Road.

Myvatn Hotels

Sel hotel myvatn.

This hotel is located right off Ring Road/Route 1 across from Lake Myvatn and the Pseudocraters. Dimmuborgir is a 10-minute drive from the hotel. If you’re lucky to have a room facing the road like we were, you’ll have beautiful views of the lake and craters.

The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable. A full complimentary breakfast with lots of options is served each morning and the hotel’s restaurant is open for dinner in the evenings. We ordered personal pizzas and loved them! There’s also a gas pump right next to the hotel which is perfect when you want to refuel before setting off for the day. If you have an electric vehicle, there are plugs available to plug in and recharge.

Fosshotel Myvatn

This upscale property is situated on the northern side of Lake Myvatn, in close proximity to Myvatn’s natural attractions. The hotel serves a full complimentary breakfast and offers dinner in the evenings. The large windows in the dining room and near the bar offer a great view of Lake Myvatn and the surrounding landscapes.

The modern rooms with comfortable beds offer storage and a seating area. Some rooms come with gorgeous lake views and outdoor seating space. As with most locations on the north coast of Iceland along the Diamond Circle, Fosshotel can be a great spot to watch for the Northern Lights in winter.

Husavik Hotels

Fosshotel husavik.

As you drive through Iceland, you’ll notice many Fosshotels. They are a well-known chain of hotels around the country. Husavik has one of those Fosshotel locations. The hotel is an 8-minute walk to Husavik Harbor, the place where Husavik whale watching tours depart and where you’ll find the Husavik Whale Museum and the town’s harborside restaurants.

The hotel offers free parking and a restaurant on-site. The rooms are cozy, yet modern. Some rooms offer views of the fjord and Skjalfandi Bay. In the mornings, breakfast is available.

Akureyri Hotels

Hafdals hotel.

This is my top choice in Akureyri! In fact, it was my favorite stay during my entire trip to Iceland. This small hotel is situated on a hill overlooking the beautiful bay and fjord. The town of Akureyri is just down the hill and across the bridge, about a 5-minute drive away. We quickly and easily ordered take-out from a restaurant in town and brought it back to the room.

The rooms are spacious and clean, with views overlooking the bay. Our room had chairs just outside meant for watching the sunset over the bay. (Unfortunately, we got a very cloudy day.) The complimentary breakfast was fantastic, with plenty of options. In particular, too, the owner was so kind and helpful. He talked us through a few questions we had about our day’s drive and also offered some local secrets about places to visit on Iceland’s north coast.

Hotel Kea by Keahotels

Situated in the center of Akureyri, Hotel Kea has a prime location for walking around the town. Free street parking is available from the hotel, along with a complimentary breakfast each morning.

The rooms are decent-sized, some with views of the church and town. There’s a restaurant on-site that serves dinner. The outdoor patio is a great spot in the warmer months to sit with a drink from the hotel bar.

Diamond Circle Best Things to See and Do

Myvatn and lake myvatn area.

In and around the village of Myvatn, there are several places to see and explore. Depending on how you plan your Diamond Circle itinerary, Myvatn can make a good place to spend the night.

I arrived in the Myvatn area just after noon and spent time visiting the sites listed below, taking advantage of the long hours of daylight.

Krafla Viti Crater

diamond circle tours iceland

This crater, a few miles from Myvatn with a turn just off Route 1, was formed during a years-long volcanic eruption and explosion. What makes this crater different from others you may see in Iceland is that it’s filled with blue water. Combine this with the crater’s large size and the mountains and steam vents in the backdrop and you’ll yet again be in awe of Iceland’s magical landscape.

There’s a rim walk that starts just near Kafla Viti Crater’s parking area. The walk is easy and shouldn’t take more than an hour. You can also choose to walk down into a geothermal area beneath the rim. Be mindful of any signs warning against the heat of the geothermal area. They are to be believed!

Hverir Geothermal Area

diamond circle tours iceland

If by this point Iceland hasn’t made you feel like you’re on another planet, this steaming, bubbling site will surely transport you. This active geothermal area is just off Ring Road, east of Myvatn. In fact, it’s an easy stop to make on your way to the Myvatn area.

This site sits below the Namafjall volcanic mountain, as part of the Namaskard geothermal area. The site is pocked with hot mud pits, vents that release heat from the depths of the Earth, boiling sulfur springs, and fumaroles. (Not to be mistaken for the much more delightful smelling profiterole.)

The site is free to visit, with a large parking area just off Route 1 (aka Ring Road). There is a ground loop you can walk which should take about 30 minutes. Just be sure to have some mints or a nose/mouth covering if you’re particularly sensitive to the smell of sulfur.

Myvatn Nature Baths

diamond circle tours iceland

Many visitors rush to the popular Blue Lagoon outside of Reyjakavik, but Iceland has many places to enjoy a thermal bath including in the north! Given the high amount of geothermal activity in the Lake Myvatn area, it’s probably not surprising to find hot springs listed as one of the main attractions in the Diamond Circle area.

The lagoon at the Myvatn Nature Baths has turquoise, mineral-rich water that’s great for the skin, among other health benefits. It’s a great way to relax and rejuvenate (away from the crowds at the Blue Lagoon!) while taking in the gorgeous views of the Myvatn area. If you’re there at the right time, you can watch the sunset and then cross your fingers for a chance to see the northern lights dance across the sky.

diamond circle tours iceland

Grjotagja is a cave used as a setting for Game of Thrones. The thermal springs inside the cave are too hot for bathing and unfortunately have been mistreated by visitors. The cave sits on private land so if you visit, please be respectful. Stay out of the water for your own safety and the natural beauty of the cave. And also remember to leave no trace. , the pseudo craters near Lake Myvatn, and Dimmuborgir, a lava field with other-worldly caves and rock formations.

diamond circle tours iceland

Not far from Grjotagja and the eastern shores of Lake Myvatn, Hverfjall volcanic crater is hard to miss. It’s more than a half-mile wide and rises up 1,300 feet. It’s the result of a massive eruption thousands of years ago.

There are 2 designated trails to the rim of the crater. The hike to the top isn’t long but be prepared for a moderate climb with loose gravel. Once at the top, you can walk the entire perimeter of the crater. It’s roughly 2 1/2 miles around. However, the views are the main draw! You’ll be able to see over Lake Myvatn, Dimmuborgir, and the surrounding area.

ProTip: Bring trekking poles to help with the hike to the rim of the crater, especially for the way down which can be even harder on the knees. Plus, they’re bound to come in handy for other hikes in Iceland, too!

Dimmuborgir

diamond circle tours iceland

Iceland is full of places you can’t see anywhere else in the world. Dimmuborgir is no exception! This volcanic area was the sight of a massive eruption thousands of years ago. Today, what’s left behind are black lava rock formations and caves, with “the church” being the most famous lava creation. Over the years, plants have crept back to life in the mineral-rich soil creating an eerie landscape full of Icelandic folklore.

Dimmuborgir is located on the eastern side of Lake Myvatn, just a few minutes’ drive from the area’s hotels and services. It’s free to visit and walk the trails. The trails are well-marked with signage and mostly flat. A few of the walks take less than an hour to complete. The landscape is both beautiful and unearthly with the lake as a backdrop.

As with a few of the other natural sites in the Myvatn area, you don’t need a lot of time to visit Dimmuborgir. On longer days, you could visit even if you only arrive in the Myvatn area in the afternoon.

Skutustadagigar

diamond circle tours iceland

Nicknamed the Pseudocraters because they are crater-shaped formations but did not form as a result of actually being volcanoes. Still, they’re impressive to look at while you’re in the Lake Myvatn area and honestly hard to miss if you’re by the lake or driving through the Myvatn area. The pseudocraters are quite close to the road and have a parking lot. From the Sel Hotel Myvatn, I had a clear view of them just across the street.

There are some walking trails that will lead you around and in between the craters. As with so many natural phenomenons in Iceland, it’ll be hard to put your camera down! And, if you’re short on time, no worries. You can get a sense of the pseudocraters by walking the loop path in just half an hour or so.

Dettifoss waterfall

diamond circle tours iceland

This powerful waterfall is the second most powerful in all of Europe and truly one of the most impressive in all of Iceland. Dettifoss is more than 300 feet wide and drops almost 150 feet down into the Jokulsargljufur Canyon. Even if you can’t wrap your head around more than 6,000 cubic feet of water (44k+ gallons) falling every second, your feet will feel the ground quaking beneath them the closer you get to Dettifoss.

There are 2 sides to view Dettifoss. The west side of the Falls can be reached by Route 862 for most of the year. The road is paved and leads to a small Visitor’s Center and parking lot. From there, you can walk the trails that lead to Dettifoss. There is an upper viewing platform and a lower viewpoint. We were lucky to have a calm day when the winds weren’t blowing the mist and could clearly see Dettifoss from the viewing platform.

The lower viewpoint brings you closer to Dettifoss by way of a steep path. Know your limits and remember you must walk back up the trail to return to the parking area.

ProTip: You can also visit Dettifoss from the east side via Route 864. This viewpoint brings you thrillingly close to the Falls. However, the road is unpaved, rough, and open only at certain times of the year. Even in May the time of year I visited, this road was still snow-covered and closed. Check road conditions using the helpful websites listed below before setting out to visit Dettifoss to solidify your plan.

Selfoss Waterfall

diamond circle tours iceland

Just upstream from Dettifoss, you’ll find Selfoss, another beautiful Diamond Circle waterfall composed of numerous waterfalls spilling over rocks at various points forming a horseshoe shape. It’s wide in size like Dettifoss but the drops aren’t as tall. If you visit in the winter, some of the small pretty waterfalls along Selfoss’ flanks stop flowing. But, the larger area of waterfalls will flow in the distance.

If you’ve visited Dettifoss from the west side, it’s well worth the short walk down the paths to see Selfoss. As you walk back along the paths from Dettifoss towards the parking area, look for signage pointing towards Selfoss. Be careful as you follow the path parallel to the river. The Falls flow from many points as you approach so stay on the trail and watch for wet, slippery rocks.

You can also visit Selfoss from the east side. The trail is just as long from Dettifoss on the west side (about .6 of a mile) but with larger boulders that require some scrambling.

ProTip: Hafragilsfoss is another water downstream from Dettifoss. You can view these Falls from the east and west sides but it’s better from the east. There are signs as you drive away from the Dettifoss parking lot. Turn right (going north) back onto Route 862 and follow the signs. Keep in mind, this drive will take an hour, but will also land you close to the east sides of Dettifoss and Selfoss if you wanted to see those Falls from both sides. As before, check the status and conditions of Route 864.

If you choose to view Hafragilsfoss from the west side, the drive is just a few minutes from Dettifoss. However, the viewpoint is a few miles away from the Falls.

Asbyrgi Canyon

diamond circle tours iceland

Looking out at this spectacular horseshoe-shaped canyon, you can’t help but marvel at the power of nature. (Admittedly, you’ll be doing this throughout your trip to Iceland.) The canyon is part of Vatnajokull National Park and spans more than half a mile wide and  2+ miles long. Perhaps even more impressive are the 330 feet tall cliffsides!

During the summer months, the insides of the canyon turn green from the trees that make up its center woodlands. Not surprisingly, this is also the best time to visit the canyon. There are hiking trails for all abilities and in a range of durations, including multi-day hikes. Even if you have only a short amount of time for your visit, plan to hike! It’s the best way to see Asbyrgi Canyon. Longer hikes lead to the popular Botnstjorn Pond at the end of the canyon. But, even shorter hikes come with great views of the canyon.

Here’s a map of the Asbyrgi Canyon hikes . The blue-marked trails like A2 and A3 are easy, while the red-marked trails like A4 and A7-9 are more difficult.

The Visitor’s Center is located just off Route 85 in between the northern ends of Routes 862 and 864. Route 85 is open all year, even in snowy conditions, although it’s always best to check road conditions first. There’s a turn from Route 85 onto Route 861 for a short section of road before reaching the parking area. Keep in mind, the Visitor’s Center is primarily open from May to October.

ProTip: As you travel on Route 85 towards Husavik, stop at the Hringsbjarg Cliffs scenic overlook. The observation deck offers information about the area and sweeping views of north Iceland. You might even get lucky and spot a Puffin if you visit during nesting season.

Husavik Iceland

The seaport village of Husavik is on Route 85 of the Diamond Circle. It’s nicknamed “the whale watching capital of Iceland” and with good reason. The waters of Skjalfandi Bay in Husavik harbor are home to many species of marine life, including whales like the Humpback!

This Arctic Circle-facing town may be small in size but it comes with outsized value for your time. In fact, you could easily plan to spend 1 night in Husavik and pick up your Diamon Circle loop drive the next morning. Most visitors come to Husavik for the aforementioned whale watching. Quite simply, it’s a must-do in Husavik. My Husavik whale watching tour was easily one of my most favorite things to do in Iceland.

While in town, visit Husavik’s Whale Museum, with a full-sized skeleton of a Blue Whale, the largest mammal to have lived. The wooden church in town is postcard-perfect, as are the restaurants and shops lining the harbor. Gamli Baukur along the port has fantastic local seafood dishes!

You can even escape the crowds of the Blue Lagoon and, instead, relax in the Geothermal Sea Baths on the cliffs overlooking Skjalfandi Bay!

Godafoss Waterfall

diamond circle tours iceland

South of Husavik and west of Myvatn, the spectacular Godafoss waterfall plunges nearly 40 feet into the river below before winding its way through the canyon. What makes this “waterfall of the gods” so impressive is its horseshoe shape and falls that span roughly 100 feet wide.

Without question, Godafoss is one of the most beautiful sights to see in all of Iceland…a statement not made lightly on an island of immeasurable natural beauty. Even if you don’t plan to drive the entire Diamond Circle, don’t miss seeing Godafoss up close!

Getting to Godafoss is straightforward and clearly marked. Although if you’re driving in northern Iceland in the winter, you’ll want a 4-wheel drive vehicle and to always check the road conditions before driving. Godafoss is just off Ring Road about 35 minutes from Myvatn to the east and the city of Akureyri to the west.

There are parking areas and paths leading you closer to the falls for easy access. There are viewing points on both sides of the waterfall. If you have the time, take in the view from both sides.

North Iceland is a Must!

While other parts of Iceland continue to get the most love, northern Iceland, and in particular, the Diamond Circle has arguably some of the most spectacular sights in all of Iceland!

As you plan your Iceland itinerary, don’t miss the opportunity to spend a few days driving Iceland’s Diamond Circle.

Húsavík in Northern Iceland

Iceland’s Diamond Circle: A Guide

  • March 5, 2024

Share article

What is the Diamond Circle in Iceland?

The Diamond Circle showcases some of northern Iceland’s magnificent waterfalls, geothermal, and volcanic sites. It consists of Goðafoss waterfall, Mývatn lake, Dettifoss waterfall, Ásbyrgi canyon, and Húsavík fishing town. The Diamond Circle itself can be completed in a day, as the driving distance with Akureyri as a starting point is about 224 km [139 mi]. The total time will vary based on the time spent at each site. Guided excursions and tours are available, but you can also choose to explore The Diamond Circle independently, at your own pace. The roads connecting the Diamond Circle are paved.

We will start in Akureyri, the third-largest city in Iceland, with a population of 20,000. The 390 km drive to Akureyri from the capital area is quite simple, as you drive on the same road the whole way- Route 1 or the “Ring Road” as it’s often called.

Goðafoss Waterfall

From Akureyri, you will continue on Route 1 for about 34 km [21 mi] before turning right towards Goðafoss.

On the sightseeing platform, you can take in the panoramic view of this 12 m [39 ft] high, 30 m [98 ft] wide waterfall that runs from the glacial river Skjálfandafljót. Goðafoss waterfall is a historic site in Iceland. In the year 1,000, Þorgeir Þorkellsson, the lawmaker of Iceland, had concluded that Iceland should become a Christian country. Believing in the Norse gods was still allowed, but that religion had to be practised in one’s home. He is said to have gone to Goðafoss waterfall (translated as “Waterfall of the Gods”) and thrown his heathen idols into the water.

Goðafoss Waterfall, Iceland

The geothermal area of Mývatn Lake

Return to Route 1, turning right to keep driving towards Mývatn lake. 30 km [22 mi], turn left to stay on Route 1, following the Húsavík/Egilsstaðir/Fuglasafn sign. Shortly, you will see the lake and can pick a stop of your choosing along the route- there will be several.

Mývatn lake was formed about 2,300 years ago due to a volcanic eruption. With an area of approximately 73 km2 [28 mi2], it’s the fourth-largest lake in Iceland. Mývatn lake is known for its rich birdlife and its surrounding geothermal area, including hot springs and mud pots.

You may want to experience the Mývatn Nature Baths for a relaxing stop. To get to the baths, stay on Route 1. Following the sign for Egilsstaðir, turn left to continue on Route 1. Follow the signs for Jarðböðin við Mývatn (Mývatn Nature Baths) and enjoy the beauty of this geothermal lagoon. This area also has a cafe where you can stop by for a snack.

Dettifoss Waterfall

From the baths, turn right to continue on Route 1 for 23 km [14 mi]. Then, turn left towards Dettifoss on Route 862 and follow the signs for Dettifoss. You will arrive at a parking lot. From the lot, there will be about an 850 m [0.52 mi] walk to the viewpoint. Dettifoss waterfall is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, with a flow rate of 193 m3 [6,815 ft3]. Dettifoss is located in Vatnajökull National Park, and its water runs from the glacial river “Jökulsá á fjöllum” directly from Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull. The waterfall is 44-45 m [144-147 ft] high and 100 m [328 ft] wide.

Ásbyrgi Canyon in North Iceland

Return to Dettifossvegur (Route 862) and turn right. When you approach the intersection of Route 862 and Route 85, turn right. Shortly, there will be a sign for Ásbyrgi canyon.

Ásbyrgi is a glacial canyon in the shape of a horseshoe. Like Dettifoss waterfall, it’s a part of Vatnajökull National Park. Ásbyrgi was formed due to a glacial flood from Jökulsár á fjöllum river during a volcanic eruption in Grímsvötn volcano. Ásbyrgi is about 3.5 km [2.2 mi] long and 1.1 km [0.7 mi] wide. In the middle stands a large 25 m [82 ft] high rock formation called Eyjan (The Island), emphasising the canyon’s horseshoe shape. Its surrounding cliffs are about 100 m [328ft] high. You can choose from several hiking trails with stunning panoramic views along the way.

Húsavík: Whale Watching Capital of Iceland

To get to Húsavík from Ásbyrgi, drive back towards Route 85 and make a left. The drive is 62 km [38 mi] long. Húsavík is a small fishing town in Skjálfandi bay, with a population of about 2,300. It is home to The Exploration Museum, The Whale Museum and Húsavík Museum. The Húsavík Museum is a cultural centre displaying the historic exhibitions “Daily Life and Nature-100 years in Þingeyjarsýslur” as well as the “Maritime Museum” . This picturesque town is a prime whale-watching destination, offering tours to see some of the 23 species of whales. Húsavík has several restaurants and cafes with a beautiful view of the harbour.

Akureyrarkirkja Church, Akureyri Iceland

Back to Akureyri

To return to Akureyri, drive south on Route 85 for 45 km [28 mi] until you hit Route 1. Make a right and continue for 30 km [19 mi] following the signs for Akureyri.

From the trembling power of Dettifoss waterfall to the tranquillity of Mývatn lake, the Diamond Circle is a great route to experience the distinct beauty of northern Iceland. It unveils the region‘s geological wonders of volcanic and geothermal areas, waterfalls, and cultural sites, making the trip an exciting adventure for any explorer.

What is the Diamond Circle?

A tour exploring the pearls -- sorry, the diamonds! -- of North Iceland. The name may sound pompous, but it actually draws from the rhombus shape of this 250 km loop.

The trip covers Europe’s most ‘powerful’ waterfall, along with much Iceland's most iconic landscape: the muddy hot springs of Mývatn, whale friendly Skjálfandi Bay and magnificent paths of Jökulsárgljúfur Canyon.

The circle is a d-tour from the Ring Road, stretching from Lake Mývatn to the Tjörnes Peninsula. The driving can be done in a single day, but at least two is recommended to cover what the area has to offer.

In 2020, the route was completely paved after years of road construction. The aim is to keep the route open during winter but do follow weather updates and road conditions from Fall to Spring; the website Safe Travel has a color-coded map for road icing and snow.

Glacial waterfalls, aerobatic humpback whales and overlooked fossils

People at Dettifoss waterfall

Waterfall Dettifoss marks the beginning of Jökulsárgljúfur canyon.

Waterfall Goðafoss is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland--and a historic site. In the year 1000, when Iceland converted from paganism to Christianity, the leader of Iceland’s parliament threw the last official totems of Norse mythology into the waterfall.  Lake Mývatn is a community of some 500 people living closer to the Highland region than any other. This makes for some seasonal contrast. Winters are snowy and often clock the coldest temperatures. Summers are still and warm, full of migrating birds.

Asbyrgi canyon

The birch-grown Ásbyrgi canyon during summer.

Jökulsárgljúfur canyon can easily sustain days of traveling, starting from the iconic Waterfall Dettifoss waterfall to the tree-grown Ásbyrgi . The western banks of the canyon have a popular 33 km walking path. To get the best of that walking experience, visit the the Hljóðaklettar rock formations in the Vesturdalur valley.

Husavik harbour

The town of Húsavík is arguably Iceland's whale-watching capital.

Mid-way on the route, is the harbor town of Húsavík , where whale-watching ships outnumber shipping vessels. According to some, Húsavík is the whale-watching capital of Iceland -- if not Europe -- with humpbacks, dolphins and even the blue whale swimming in the wide Skjálfandi Bay.

The Diamond Circle also covers some less-explored areas of Iceland, such as the Tjörnes Peninsula with ocean-views, birdlife and an intriguing history of fossils due to its position ‘between’ the tectonic plate boundaries.

For more, check out Visit North Iceland , the official travel guide to North Iceland, and the Vatnajökull National Park covering the Ásbyrgi and Dettifoss region.

Ultimate Guide to The Diamond Circle | Gems in the North

diamond circle tours iceland

Exploring, experiencing, and expanding your horizons is all that you need to do to ensure that you have seen and felt every single beautiful scenery and thrill that the land of ice and fire has to offer you. It is no secret that Iceland is loaded with places and destinations that you can visit and get face to face with the new and exciting things. Every corner of the country hides gorgeous places waiting to be explored by new, budding, adventurous tourists. Most tourist populations of Iceland choose to travel towards the south which is a lot mellower in terms of climate and ever-changing temperature. But there are several wonders that the north hides within itself. Just like the south has the Golden Circle, the most traveled route of the country, the north has the Diamond Circle, the route that goes through some of the most popular destinations in the north.

Lake Myvatn in north Iceland

What is the Diamond Circle?

The Diamond Circle is a paved route that passes through several different glorious destinations of northeast Iceland. The diamond circle could be seen as the hidden, lesser-known but equally beautiful, if not more, as the infamous Golden Circle of south Iceland. Both these circles are quite similar to each other. Just like the golden circle is located near the capital city of Iceland, the Diamond Circle is located near the Akureyri , also known as the capital in the north.

The circle is also described as a “magnificent circuit”. It is about 250 kilometers long and runs across five main destinations along with a couple of other gorgeous add-ons. What makes the Diamond Circle special is the fact that it is not only every bit beautiful as the golden circle but also a lot less crowded and contains many more destinations en route in comparison to the golden circle which has only three main destinations on it. Let’s explore what the Diamond Circle has in store for you.

Top Destinations on the Diamond Circle

Since it is a circle, there are two ways to travel on the Diamond Circle. The clockwise travel will lead to Húsavík which is about 58 kilometers from Akureyri and the anti-clockwise journey will lead you to Goðafoss waterfall first which is about 29 kilometers from the city. No matter how you choose to travel, the total driving time will remain the same so it completely depends on what you are in the mood to see first – the beautiful breaching whales or the foamy white cascading waters. Let’s find out what the Diamond Circle has in store for you.

Goðafoss Waterfall

diamond circle tours iceland

This beautiful place is a true example of Icelandic landscapes with contrasting beauty. From various colors of the landscapes to rich wildlife, birdlife, and lush vegetation, Mývatn lake has it all. It will be the second main stop after the Goðafoss waterfall and it is at a distance of about 53 kilometers from the waterfall. The Mývatn lake was created as a result of a volcanic eruption and was created about 2300 years ago. Several lava rock structures can be found near the lake surrounding it indicating the eruption that occurred years ago. Not only near the lake but you can find some lava structures under the lake as well which makes it quite different than other locations.

Lake Mývatn is spread across an area of about 36.5 km2. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. The lake and the surrounded area are protected as a natural reserve of the country. The lake is known for its natural lush beauty and housing the greatest number of duck species in the whole world. It is a true heaven for bird lovers. Another thing that makes the lake special is its incredible vegetation. You can easily find underwater plants like diatoms, a type of algae, and near there is plenty of aquatic char near the surface. The lake is shallow so sun rays travel right to the bed penetrating the waters creating a beautiful scenery.

You can read a detailed article about Lake Myvatn here.

Dettifoss Waterfall

sunset at Dettifoss the most powerful waterfall in Europe during summer

If you are driving around the diamond circle and looking for some exceptionally thrilling destination then your wait is over. Dettifoss waterfall is one of those places which will give you Goosebumps and offer an exceptional thrill. Dettifoss waterfall is the most powerful waterfall in the whole of yourself. Over 193 cubic meters of water pours over the edge of the water every second at incredible speed creating an awe-inspiring display.

The waterfall is 44 meters high and about 100 meters high and has a flow of 193 cubic meters which means that you will hear a thunderous sound of the water falling downwards into the ridge as you get closer to the waterfall. The scenery here is different from any other waterfall you may have seen in the country already so be prepared to be surprised. The rugged surroundings, the milky white waters of the glacial rivers, and the larger-than-life waterfall make everything else seems smaller, including your self.

You can read a detailed article about Dettifoss waterfall here.

Ásbyrgi Canyon

diamond circle tours iceland

This particular place lies between Mývatn lake and Dettifoss waterfall. It will only take about 18-20 minutes to reach this place from the lake. Mount Námafjall is surrounded by boiling mud pools and the air is filled with the smell of sulfur here. The landscape is completely different here in comparison to the lake. Where the lake is very lush and green, the boiling mud pool area and the mountain area is high on brown shades. If you decide to stop here on your journey ensure that you do not stay in the geothermal area for too long as the sulfur and other gases releasing from the mud pools can give you headaches.

Stick to the paths and try not to stumble upon the rocks. Everything is very hot in this area. But if you are careful enough and follow the instruction, it is guaranteed that you will get to experience sights which are to be found nowhere else in the world. This place could be a heaven on earth for fans of science and chemistry.

You can read a detailed article about Mt. Námafjall here.

Hafragilsfoss Waterfall

diamond circle tours iceland

Located between the Hafragilsfoss waterfall and the town of Húsavík , Jökulsárgljúfur canyons is situated in the Vatnajökull National Park. It takes about 40 minutes to reach the canyons from Dettifoss waterfall . Jökulsárgljúfur canyons can be translated as the glacial river canyons. It is 25 kilometers long, 2.5 kilometers wide and about 100 meters deep. There are cliffs on both sides of the canyons. The canyons were a result of the powerful Jökulsá á Fjöllum, The Glacial River in the Mountain.

Several natural formations can be found in this canyon. From powerful waterfalls to basalt columns, cliffs, pillars, natural rock formations, to springs and lush vegetation, everything that you hope to see can be found in these canyons. While you will most likely visit this place on a single day trip, it is still worth knowing that there are several different camping areas, hiking trails, and a beautiful site here. So, if you are looking for a place to camp in isolation, Jökulsárgljúfur can be it.

You can read a detailed article about Jökulsárgljúfur here.

This tour starts from the Cruise Ship Terminal in Akureyri.

Join this and visit the absolute highlights of North Iceland. Akureyri, Iceland’s northern capital, is the perfect starting point for this sightseeing loop consisting of raging waterfalls, charming fishing villages, strange geological features, cliffs, and geothermal hot springs. Your expert local guide will enlighten you on local folklore, geology, and more. This is the best sightseeing tour north Iceland has to offer.

Our first stop is at Góðafoss waterfall, with several viewing points along the walking trails. Góðafoss means ‘Waterfall of the Gods’in Icelandic and has great symbolic value in Icelandic culture and history. The story goes that over 1000 years ago, an influential chieftain, upon deciding that his people should forfeit the old gods and adopt Christianity instead, cast his pagan idols into the water here. Góðafoss thereby represents the Christianisation of the country.

Ásbyrgi Canyon is a stunning horse-shoe-shaped valley; the depression here is 1km in width and 4km in length and is surrounded by sheer vertical cliffs which envelop a small forest and idyllic pond. It is hard to overstate the scale here and how imposing these cliffs are, standing as they do at 100 meters high. Many bird species nest in the nooks and crannies of these rocky cliffs.

It’s the second largest waterfall in Iceland in terms of volume, with an average of 193 cubic meters of water per second crashing down a 44-meter drop into a vast canyon in a cacophony of force. The volume of water combined with this sheer drop has led to the belief that Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Dettifoss is part of the Jökulsá á fjöllum River, which is fed by multiple rivers in north Iceland as well as meltwater from the Vatnajökull glacier.

Húsavík is a charming village in North Iceland where life and business revolve around the harbor. It’s known for the Whale Watching tours.  The church in Húsavík stands in the center of the town and is generally agreed to be one of the most beautiful in Iceland. Húsavík has attracted lots of attention in recent years through the Netflix movie “Eurovision Song Contest”.

Hringsbjarg is a 60m tall cliff on the Tjörnes peninsula, just north of Húsavík. The Tjörnes viewing platform sits atop this cliff and offers fantastic panoramic views of the sea and Öxarfjörður fjörd. If you are lucky, you might spot nesting pairs of puffins, the annual summer visitors to our shores.

Hverir (Námaskarð)

If it wasn’t obvious enough by this point, the captivating landscapes around Mývatn could largely be credited to ancient volcanic eruptions. But at Namaskard, also known as Hverir, one can see the impact and effects of ongoing geothermal activity.

It’s renowned for the eye-catching color of the rocks and ground, caused by the rich minerals emanating from the area’s underground seismic activity. Enjoy the smells and sights of the area, with boiling mud pots, hot springs, and the odor of the sulphuric steam lingering in the air.

We drive past the iconic Lake Mývatn, famed for its beauty and strange surrounding landscape. We stop at a great viewpoint high above the lake and take in the splendor of the view. We see the Skútusstaðir craters in the distance, sitting by the lake shore and on a small island in the lake itself.

Optional drop-off at Forest Lagoon

Forest Lagoon is the newest addition to Iceland’s burgeoning luxury thermal spa scene. Set amidst the trees in one of the few forests in North Iceland, this idyllic retreat and its healing geothermal waters leave you feeling revitalized and rejuvenated. With spectacular views of the fjord and the town of Akureyri, this is the perfect place to end your day’s journey through North Iceland.

If you wish to add to go to the lagoon, you should book your entrance ticket for 8 hours after the tour start time. You can book your entrance tickets  HERE . You can rent towels and swimsuits at the location.

If you add this stop to your day, drop-off will be at the Forest Lagoon. Akureyri and the cruise terminal is a short taxi ride, which the staff at the lagoon will be happy to book for you.

Please wear warm clothes, waterproof layers, and hiking shoes.

Guide to the Diamond Circle in Iceland: Full Guide + Itinerary

Have you always wanted to take a road trip through Iceland but have been sitting on the fence (or rather the couch) about it? Then this article is for you. The Diamond Circle in Iceland might just be the road trip of a lifetime that you’ve been dreaming about.

In this article, we discuss everything you need to know about the Diamond Circle and even give you a full itinerary to try yourself.

Diamond circle Iceland

What is the Diamond Circle?

The Diamond Circle is one of the most popular road trip routes in Iceland . You can opt to drive the route yourself or go on a Diamond Circle guided tour in Iceland.

Where is the Diamond Circle in Iceland?

If you take a look at a Diamond Circle in Iceland map, you will see that the Diamond Circle route is in the northeastern part of the island . People often say that it’s the Ring Road of northeast Iceland.

How far is the Diamond Circle from Reykjavík?

The odds of you starting your Diamond Circle trip directly from Reykjavík are slim. Most people usually opt to start from Husavik. Still, the capital city is likely to be your first stop on the island after landing at Keflavik Airport.

Reaching the first leg of your Diamond Circle journey from Reykjavík will take you almost 6 hours by car (you are driving 463 km, after all). The alternative is to hop on a domestic flight, but then you will be missing out on all the amazing sights and activities along the way.

When to Visit the Diamond Circle

The Diamond Circle is one of the main routes on the island, so you’ll find that the majority of it is paved and in excellent condition. The route is also, technically, open to visitors all year round . But remember, you are exploring the northern parts of Iceland. Any local will tell you that during the colder months, the odds of your trip being interrupted by sudden road closures are good.

And even if you’re lucky and the Iceland roads remain open, you’ll still have to face some pretty tricky road conditions. That’s why we recommend that you plan a Diamond Circle trip during the warmer months (anytime between March and September). During the warmer months, you’ll also have more daylight hours at your disposal to accommodate traveling time. You'll also have more time to spend on attractions and activities along the route, especially outdoor activities.

Diamond circle Iceland

Driving through the Diamond Circle in Iceland

As we’ve already touched on, driving the Diamond Circle during the colder months can be tricky. But during the warmer months, driving the Diamond Circle is a piece of cake. During this time, you’ll easily be able to drive the route with a 2-wheel drive , unless you plan to also drive some of the F-roads in Iceland .

If you’re brave enough to tackle the route during the colder months, we recommend that you get a 4x4. The vehicle should be kitted out with snow tires and other types of winter gadgets and accessories right from the get-go. The Diamond Circle can be driven clockwise or counterclockwise , and it solely relies on your own preferences which you choose to do.

How long does it take to drive the Diamond Circle?

The Diamond Circle is about 310 km long and will take you a little more than 4 hours to drive if you don’t stop at all . This obviously defies the entire point of a road trip if you truly wish to experience all it has to offer. So, unless you’re extremely crunched for time, it’s recommended that you set aside 5-7 days to drive the Diamond Circle.

A Few Helpful Tips When Driving the Diamond Circle in Iceland

Is this your first visit to the island, or your first time taking on the Diamond Circle route in Iceland? The following tips will help you have a memorable and safe journey:

1. Plan Where You’ll Fuel Up

Firstly, gas stations are probably not as prevalent as you are used to back home, especially not in the more remote regions of the island. So, you’ll need to plan out where to fuel up beforehand, so you don’t end up being stranded next to the road without gas. Gas prices in Iceland are also not the same at all gas stations . Ask your rental agent and chat with the locals to find out where their go-to places are to fill up.

Diamond Circle tips

2. Make Sure You’re Right

Literally. This may seem obvious to some, but think of people from other countries. If you’re coming from places such as the UK and Australia, you may need some reminding that we drive on the right side of the road here in Iceland.

3. Always Have Some Offline or Hard Copy Maps

Whether you’re driving the Diamond Circle route in Iceland or another road somewhere else in the world, this is a good rule to follow. Technology fails and signals drop. You don’t want to be left driving “blind”.

Top 5 Sights in the Diamond Circle

There are many attractions and activities along the way to see and enjoy. But the route’s biggest claims to fame are Lake Myvatn, Dettifoss Waterfall, Asbyrgi Canyon, Husavik, and Godafoss Waterfall.

Lake Myvatn

Lake Myvatn is a volcanic lake in the northern part of the country and is known for its magnificent flora and fauna. It is especially a favorite spot for bird lovers and those who wish to spot the Northern Lights . Another attraction that is synonymous with the Myvatn Lake is the Myvatn Nature Baths . Here you can take a relaxing soak in the warm geothermal pools.

Dettifoss Waterfall

Dettifoss is truly a sight to behold. It is the most powerful waterfall in Europe with more than 365292 liters of water crashing over the cliffs every second! The falls are 100 meters wide and 44 meters tall and can be viewed from both the West and the East side.

Where you watch it from will essentially be dictated by your preference and the direction the wind is blowing. You don’t constantly want to be whacked by mist and spray from the most powerful waterfall in Europe, do you?

Asbyrgi Canyon is a canyon in the shape of a horseshoe that was created by floods caused by glacial bursts from the Vatnajökull ice cap. Today you can take a hike through the 1-kilometer-wide canyon with cliffs that are 100 meters high.

Asbyrgi Canyon is also seeped in mystery and folklore, especially when it comes to the Hidden Folk of Iceland. So, if you hear singing whilst you’re hiking, you might not be alone…

Asbyrgi Canyon, Diamond Circle

Husavik is known as the whale capital of Iceland . You can already guess which activity should be on the top of your itinerary when visiting there. Especially if you’re visiting during the whale season, from April to September. That's when migratory whale species also calls the island their home.

In recent years, an international spotlight was shown on Husavik because of the popular movie Eurovision. The film was shot in the town and had a song called Husavik – My Home Town shoot up the billboard charts.

Godafoss Waterfall

Godafoss Waterfall can be found in the northern part of the island, just 45 minutes away from Akureyri (the capital city of the north). It is an incredibly impressive waterfall, even though it’s definitely not the biggest. It clocks in at only 12 meters high and 30 meters wide, but it certainly is one of the prettiest. But it’s the backstory that captures the imagination of visitors.

It is believed that Godafoss was the place that marked the official conversion of the country to Christianity . Its name directly translates to ‘waterfall of the gods’. Porgeir Ljosvetningagodi, who was the lawspeaker at that time, took all his Norse god idols and throw them into the falls. This was considered a symbol of this conversion.

Day 2: Husavik – Asbyrgi – Vesturdalur – Dettifoss – Husavik

Today you’ll have quite a few stops to get to, the first being Asbyrgi. From there you’ll travel to Vesturdalur Valley. There, the volcanic activity on the island has created the most bizarre-looking rock formations and shapes .

After that, you’ll head over to the most powerful waterfall in Europe, Dettifoss. And if you still have enough time left after that, we recommend that you swing by the fissures at Tjörnes and Kelduhverfi. Or you can also visit the Voladalstorfa Lighthouse. There you might spot a few Iceland Puffins and their Pufflings if you’re visiting between May and August.

Day 4: Myvatn – Krafla – Hverir – Dimmuborgir – Myvatn

Today is probably the busiest day on this 5-day Diamond Circle itinerary. Your first stop will be Krafla Volcano where you can marvel at the blue water of the lake that fills the caldera.

After that, you can marvel at the angry hissing and furious bubbling of hot pools and steam vents at Hverir Geothermal Area . If something smells rotten there, don’t worry, it’s merely the sulfur deposits. Your last stop will be the Dimmuborgir Lava Fields. Volcanic eruptions and lava have sculpted the most incredible rock formations.

Diamond Circle Guesthouses

The guesthouses in Iceland are quite nice, especially if you want the inside scoop on Iceland living from your host. It also helps that breakfast is generally included in your stay. If this is the route you want to go when traveling the Diamond Circle, Guesthouse Gullsol and Myvatn Road Guesthouse come recommended.

Diamond Circle Guided Tours in Iceland

We strongly believe that the best way to explore the island is by road-tripping it yourself. However, if your time is limited, or you prefer to go on guided tours, the following might be a Diamond Circle tour in Iceland that you can consider:

Diamond Circle Day Trip (departs from Akureyri)

The Diamond Circle Classic (departs from Akureyri)

The Diamond Circle Tour (departs from Akureyri)

Is the Diamond Circle worth it?

Diamond Circle

The North of Iceland is best known for its great natural sights and beautiful landscape. Our tour leaves from Saltvík Farm near Húsavík and leads to the Lake Mývatn area, known for its volcanic features and countless numbers of wild breeding ducks. An optional whale watching tour concludes the circle of natural highlights on and off shore. A visit to the picturesque and mighty waterfall Goðafoss will be something to remember.

We ride on mainly soft riding tracks, ideal for riding “tölt”, the unique gait of the Icelandic horse. The first two days we will ride along the shore and over Hvammsheiði heath and cross the river Laxá. The next day will take us from the forested hillsides in Laxárdalur via the black sand deserts of Hólasandur to lake Mývatn, where boiling mud pools and eerie lava formations remind you of the active volcanic energy hidden beneath the surface. After a long day in the saddle, it is ideal to take a relaxing soak in the outdoor bathing facility with hot geothermal water at “Jarðböð”.  From there we will ride the next day towards the Gæsafjöll Mountains. Through an area covered with cracks and fissures from countless earthquakes and volcanic activity, the route leads towards the mountain cabin at Þeistareykir, a place with bubbling hot water and white clouds rising to the sky from the steam vents. We will spend the night at this magical place. On the last day we ride home to Saltvík, enjoying the terrific view over Skjálfandi bay!

The accommodation on this tour is in 2-4 pers. rooms with made-up beds at Saltvík holiday farm and one night in a cosy mountain hut at Þeistareykir (sleeping bags). At Saltvík farm our guests have access to hot tubs every evening to relax after long days in the saddle! Free wifi connection is also offered at Saltvík farm.

In the morning you leave your guesthouse to go to Eagle Air airport for a direct flight to Húsavík. Saltvík is only a 5 min. drive from the airport. At Saltvik, we start our ride after a short introduction to the Icelandic horses and their special gaits. We ride along the seaside of the arctic ocean north of Iceland enjoying a fantastic view out towards the arctic circle. A relaxing bath in a warm outdoor tub before dinner at Saltvik farm is well deserved after this first day of our journey!

Optional in the afternoon (80 euros which includes transport from/to Saltvík): A whale watching tour starting from the harbor in Húsavík can be offered. Húsavík and the bay of Skjálfandi is known to be one of the best places in the world to find and see some of the gentle giants of the ocean. Humpbacks, Minky Whales, Dolphins and even Blue Whales are some of the creatures you can expect to see!

We ride across Hvammsheiði heathlands following excellent soft “tölttrails” and riverbanks of Mýrarhvísl river towards the big Laxá river which we cross at a passing were the river spreads out over 100 m wide riverpath! During the ride we enjoy great view over the green valleys of the north, Aðaldalur and Reykjadalur.

We saddle up at Aðalból farm and ride up along Laxárdalur before we leave the countryside and head up to the higher grounds of Hólasandur desert and the lava fields of Þeistareykjahraun. If lucky with the weather we enjoy amazing view to the Volcanoes all around. We ride through huge lupine fields and trough the lava on great riding tracks towards Þeistareykir geothermal area with hot springs all around. After the ride we head back with our little bus to Saltvík farm for staying overnight.

We start with a sightseeing tour by bus and visit some nice places around like the waterfall Goðafoss and the lavaformations Dimmuborgir at lake Mývatn. Then we drive up to Þeistareykir where our horses are waiting and ride for a day in the wilderness. We ride to the craters Litla Víti and Stóra Víti which are huge craters in the mountains with lava fields all around. This night we stay over at Þeistareykir mountain cabin and enjoy the evening at this amazing place in the highlands with our horses grazing outside.

The last day of our journey we ride home to Saltvík farm crossing the lavafields of Bóndhólshraun. Then following nice riding trails through the valley Geldingadalur and along Skarðaháls with a great view over the bay of Skjálfandi north of Iceland. The last track leads across Reykjaheiði back home to our farm Saltvík where we celebrate our adventures in the evening with a cheerful farewell party!

After a hearty breakfast, its time to drive with our small bus back to Reykjavík and enjoy the beautiful scenery on the way.

Driving Iceland's Diamond Circle: All You Need to Know

If you like the sound of exploring one of the most geologically active corners of the globe, look no further than the Diamond Circle, Iceland. Drive this route and you could discover a mind-boggling mix of volcanoes, waterfalls, canyons and geothermal sites.

Imagine gazing out over mud pools, hot springs and craters. Picture yourself spotting whales breaching off the Arctic coast, or birds flying over wetlands set within a volcanic landscape.

All this, and more, is waiting for you on a self-drive tour of Iceland . Read on to get the lowdown on how to drive the Diamond Circle, including where to go and travel tips.

Driving the Diamond Circle, North Iceland

What is the Diamond Circle?

The Diamond Circle is a driving route in Iceland that takes in some of the most breathtaking sights in the northeast of the country. This area is positioned in the Northern Volcanic Rift Zone, where the North American and Eurasian plates diverge.

If you were to drive the full circuit, you’d cover a distance of 250 kilometres (155 miles).

You may already know about the Golden Circle , an attraction-packed touring route located within easy reach of the capital, Reykjavík, in southeast Iceland. But the Diamond Circle – situated on the opposite side of the country – has as much allure as its name would suggest.

Where is the Diamond Circle in Iceland?

You’ll find the Diamond Circle in North Iceland, around 30 kilometres (18 miles) from the regional capital, Akureyri . If you’re driving around the Ring Road anti-clockwise, it’s 140 kilometres (87 miles) from the town of Egilsstaðir in East Iceland.

Godafoss waterfall in summer

How far is the Diamond Circle from Reykjavík?

You can reach the Diamond Circle from Reykjavík as part of a self-drive trip around Iceland . If you were to travel from the capital city in an anti-clockwise direction, it’d take you 10.5 hours (driving time only). Our local travel experts recommend this way if you’re doing the Full Circle tour of Iceland.

Travelling clockwise around Iceland, the driving time from Reykjavík is 6.5 hours. This would be suitable if you’re planning on exploring just West and North Iceland, skipping the south coast.

How long does it take to drive the Diamond Circle?

It would take you about 4 hours to drive the Diamond Circle non-stop. Of course, you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of time to enjoy each of the main highlights. That’s why it’s best to dedicate at least a day to exploring.

If you’re visiting in winter, the days will be shorter than in summer. This means you’ll need more than one day here if you want to see all the Diamond Circle’s top sights.

How to drive the Diamond Circle in Iceland

You can discover this jaw-dropping corner of Iceland at your own pace on a road trip. You’ll need to rent a car, take out car insurance, plan your route, and organise accommodation. But if you don't want the hassle, you could have a local expert arrange it all for you.

You’re in control when you travel the Diamond Circle on a self-drive adventure. You can pack in as much sightseeing as you like in a day, or take your time to explore at leisure. In summer you’d have long daylight hours, so you can visit the attractions at a time of day that suits you best.

Top 5 sights in the Diamond Circle

When you’re driving the Diamond Circle, Iceland, there are 5 main sights you won’t want to miss. They are:

  • Lake Mývatn
  • Dettifoss waterfall
  • Ásbyrgi canyon
  • Húsavík
  • Goðafoss waterfall

Read on to discover what to expect at these top attractions along the Diamond Circle route.

Lake Myvatn, North Iceland

1. Lake Mývatn

Covering more than 37 square kilometres (14 square miles), Lake Mývatn is a vast body of shallow water surrounded by volcanic formations. This area is definitely worth stopping at on your journey around the Diamond Circle.

A basaltic lava eruption which took place around 2,300 years ago led to the formation of Mývatn. Drive Road 848 in a circle around the lake, and you’ll find intriguing evidence of volcanic activity. Explore lava pillars, rootless vents, and pseudo-craters, to name but a few.

Keep an eye out for the water birds that thrive here at the lake and wetlands. And don’t leave without going for a dip in the Mývatn Nature Baths . This is the Blue Lagoon of the north, and one of the best geothermal pools and hot springs in Iceland .

Dettifoss waterfall, Diamond Circle of Iceland

2. Dettifoss waterfall

Visit Dettifoss and you will find yourself gazing at one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. Before you lay eyes on it, you’ll hear the cascading water crashing over a drop of 45 metres (148 feet).

Watch the mist rising from this immense waterfall, spread across a width of 100 metres (328 feet). We recommend that you look down upon Dettifoss from the east bank, so follow the main pathway to the viewpoint.

One of the top waterfalls in Iceland , you can experience Dettifoss on your Diamond Circle road trip. Turn off Route 1 and drive along Road 864 to reach the east bank.

Asbyrgi canyon, North Iceland

3. Ásbyrgi canyon

You may not associate Iceland with lush greenery, but that’s exactly what you can find at Ásbyrgi . This horseshoe-shaped canyon in Vatnajökull National Park is blanketed in plantlife, carved up by rivers and waterfalls.

The tall cliffs and large rock “island” protect the vegetation from powerful weather forces. You can admire Ásbyrgi from above, or by walking the hiking trails that wind their way around the canyon.

How did this marvel of nature come to be? Experts believe that Ásbyrgi was formed by glacial flooding of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river after the last Ice Age.

Husavik harbour, North Iceland

4. Húsavík

Next on your Diamond Circle trip, you could make a stop at the fishing village of Húsavík . This was one of the filming locations for Netflix’s Eurovision movie .

Húsavík is a small town that’s known as the “whale-watching capital of Iceland”. This is because the success rate of sightings here is the highest in the country.

Up to 23 different species of cetaceans dwell along the Arctic coast here, including humpback, minke and blue whales.

As well as whale-watching tours, Húsavík is a great place to soak up the charms of rural Iceland. Check out the wooden church from 1907, watch fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, and look out over the Kinnarfjöll mountains.

There aren't any other towns on the Diamond Circle route, so you may want to make the most of the cafés, restaurants and museums while you're here.

Godafoss in winter, North Iceland

5. Goðafoss waterfall

With a name as evocative as “Waterfall of the Gods”, you’d imagine that Goðafoss would be something pretty special. It’s safe to say that this mighty cascade won’t disappoint!

Admire the picture-perfect waterfall as it tumbles over two horseshoe-shaped drops. The falls themselves are not very high, compared to others such as Dettifoss. But it’s the semi-circular formation of Goðafoss that makes it so beautiful.

Goðafoss is the closest attraction on this route to Akureyri, so you could visit it at the start or end of your Diamond Circle drive.

  • Explore these top sights on a tour of North Iceland

Other attractions on the Diamond Circle

There’s even more for you to discover when driving the Diamond Circle in Iceland. Check out these other highlights of the region – which ones will you add to your road trip wish list?

Dimmuborgir in North Iceland

1. Dimmuborgir lava formations

The rock formations at Dimmuborgir (“Dark Castles”) are named so for their resemblance to ancient forts. You’ll see black lava columns, caves and arches, including the famous Kirkjan (“the Church”).

This beautiful, eerie place was created over 2,000 years ago, following the collapse of a lava tube from a large volcanic eruption. You’ll reach Dimmuborgir by driving Road 848, a circular route that loops around Lake Mývatn.

2. Hverfjall crater

Head east from Mývatn and you’ll find Hverfjall , one of the biggest tephra (tuff ring) craters in Europe at 1 kilometre (3,280 feet) wide. From the top of the rim, you get a sweeping view over Lake Mývatn.

3. Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters

Continue your drive around the lake to see the pseudocraters at Skútustaðir . Walk along the waterfront trail to see these mini-volcanoes up close.

4. Hverir geothermal area

Drive just 3 minutes from the Mývatn Nature Baths to reach the Námaskarð pass, then descend to Hverir. This is a fascinating geothermal area dotted with hot springs, steaming vents, and bubbling mud pools.

Krafla volcano and Viti crater lake, North Iceland

5. Krafla volcano

Turn off the Ring Road from Hverir to marvel at the caldera of Krafla volcano, teetering at a height of 818 metres (2,690 feet). Volcanic eruptions took place 9 times here between 1975 and 1984 in a series of events called the “Fires of Krafla”.

6. Víti crater

While you’re here, be sure to check out Víti, just a 20-minute walk from Krafla car park. This jade green, volcanic crater lake was created following a huge eruption in 1724.

7. Hljóðaklettar columns

Hljóðaklettar is an extraordinary sight you can add to your Diamond Circle itinerary. These “Echo Rocks” are a collection of basalt columns in the form of arched caves.

Located at the entrance to Vesturdalur in Vatnajökull National Park, you can reach Hljóðaklettar off Road 862 when driving between Dettifoss and Húsavík.

How much is the Diamond Circle? Is it free?

You don’t need to pay to drive the Diamond Circle route in Iceland – it is free to enter. The costs involved include your rental car, fuel, and entry fees to some of the attractions you’ll visit.

Bear in mind that there is a tunnel toll to pay if you are driving to or from Akureyri via Route 1.

Where should you stay?

We recommend that you base yourself in the Lake Mývatn area. Here you will find some of the best accommodation on the Diamond Circle. Plus you’ll be well located to explore the highlights of this driving route.

Your dedicated travel consultant at Nordic Visitor will arrange your accommodation for you. Our Iceland travel experts – who are based in Reykjavík – have special relationships with local hotels and guesthouses. So you can relax knowing that you’ll stay in the best possible places on your tour.

Lake Myvatn in winter, North Iceland

When should you visit the Diamond Circle?

You can visit the Diamond Circle at any time of year. You may want to visit Iceland in winter to increase your chances of seeing the northern lights.

In winter the nights are long and dark, which are prime conditions for catching sight of the aurora borealis . In summer the skies tend to be too bright to notice them.

Plus, in winter you could admire North Iceland’s breathtaking scenery cloaked in frost, ice and snow.

But do note that some attractions along the Diamond Circle are not easily accessible in winter. This is because Iceland’s F-roads (mountain passes) close after the summer due to weather conditions.

There are many upsides to exploring the Diamond Circle during the summer months. For example, if you’d like to go whale watching in Húsavík, you should visit Iceland in summer .

What’s more, you’ll have more daylight hours to explore as much as possible. In fact, in the height of summer, Iceland experiences the midnight sun, a phenomenon where it never gets dark. This means you can pack in more attractions of the Diamond Circle in the same day.

Your Complete Guide to the Diamond Circle in Iceland

Updated: Apr 19, 2023

The Diamond Circle in Iceland is a popular road trip route for any visitor. This is a great option for those wishing to discover all the exciting and breathtaking things the northeastern parts of the island have to offer. It is especially renowned for connecting three of the must-visit sights in Iceland.

If you’ve been itching to take on a Diamond Circle self-drive trip, then this article is for you. Here’s everything you need to know about the Diamond Circle route in Iceland:

Diamond circle Iceland

What is the Diamond Circle in Iceland?

The Diamond Circle is a route that allows you to discover all the majestic landscapes and popular sights of northeastern Iceland . Since the area is situated on the Northern Volcanic Rift Zone, you can only imagine the interesting and unique experiences waiting for you on this journey.

If you take a look at a Diamond Circle in Iceland map, you’ll see that you can easily start your Diamond Circle journey from either the capital city of Reykjavík , Akureyri (considered to be the capital city of the north), or Husavik.

The Diamond Circle in Iceland: The Facts

If you’re planning a Diamond Circle trip to Iceland, these are some of the basic facts you need to know:

What is the length of the Diamond Circle in Iceland?

The Diamond Circle is approximately 310 km long.

How Long Does it Take to Drive the Diamond Circle in Iceland?

If you drive the route without stopping, you can complete it in a bit more than 4 hours.

What is the Recommended Diamond Circle Travel Time?

Despite being able to travel the entire route in a little over 4 hours if you drive non-stop, it would completely defy the point of the road trip. Generally, to take in and experience everything the route has to offer, it is recommended that you take at least 3-5 days .

Do I Need a 4x4 to Drive the Diamond Circle in Iceland?

Since the Diamond Circle is a paved main road, you won’t need a 4x4 to access it, but in Iceland, renting a 4x4 camper is never a bad idea. Keep in mind that road conditions all across the island become tricky to navigate during the winter season. So, if that’s when you’re planning your trip, we highly recommend that you have a chat with your rental agency regarding which type of vehicle they’d suggest.

Is the Diamond Circle in Iceland Open All Year?

Officially, the Diamond Circle is open to the public all year round , but just like the rest of the roads on the island, it is subject to sudden road closures. These are usually due to unforeseen circumstances and the Iceland weather conditions.

As we already explained, the winter season also impacts the route, and the Diamond Circle is known to close pretty quickly. This is especially true when snow enters the picture.

What Attractions Can Be Found Along the Diamond Circle in Iceland?

The route has many breathtaking views and landscapes. Yet, it is especially known for three main attractions on the island, as well as a popular activity in one of the towns. These are Lake Myvatn , Dettifoss Waterfall, Asbyrgi Canyon , and whale watching in Husavik . The latter is known as the whale watching capital of Iceland.

Approximately How Much Does a Diamond Circle Trip in Iceland Cost?

This will depend solely on the type of accommodation you prefer. Whether you want to eat out or cook for yourself, or which places you want to visit. Although most Iceland attractions such as the waterfalls and national parks are free, other things such as museums and geothermal pools will charge an entrance fee. Generally speaking, if you travel frugally (camping, cooking, etc.), you can get away with roughly $250 per person per day.

Driving on the Diamond Circle in Iceland

As we already mentioned, driving on the Diamond Circle is possible all year round and, as a paved main road, can be driven with a 2-wheel drive. This may change during the winter season when road conditions can become tricky to navigate and sudden road closures become more prevalent.

Irrespective of the season, we recommend that you always keep a close eye on the Iceland weather forecast and the Iceland road conditions . This will avoid driving into a nasty surprise. Also, keep in mind that the speed limit on the Diamond Circle is 90 km/h and parking and driving can only be done on designated parking spots and clearly marked roads.

The Icelanders don’t take kindly to those not adhering to traffic laws. If you don’t adhere to speed limits or other rules of the road, you’ll end up with such a hefty fine that you might start considering selling a kidney.

Driving the Diamond Circle in Winter

It becomes extra important to keep an eye on the Iceland weather forecast and the Iceland road conditions before heading out on the Diamond Circle during the winter months. Not only are road conditions tricky to navigate at the best of times, but this route is prone to quick closures, especially when it starts snowing .

If you’re going to be visiting during the wintertime, we also recommend that you have a chat with your rental agent. This way, they can advise you on which type of vehicle, accessories, gadgets, or insurance options you may need to consider during this time.

Top Tips for a Diamond Circle Road Trip

Whether it’s going to be your first trip to Iceland or just your first time taking on the Diamond Circle, these tips will ensure that you have a safe and memorable trip:

The Right is Right

We’re talking about the right side of the road. If you’re coming from the UK, Australia, or South Africa, you’ll need to stay super focused whilst driving in Iceland. This way, you don't fall into the habit of driving on the left side of the road and playing chicken with oncoming traffic.

Iceland driving side

Focus on Fuel

There are two things to remember when it comes to fuel in Iceland. One, you need to ensure that you constantly fill up in the more remote regions, as gas stations become few and far between there . And two, gas stations don’t all charge the same prices for gas in Iceland . We suggest having a chat with your rental agency or some locals to get the inside scoop on where to fill up – especially if you’re on a tight budget.

Keep Offline Maps or Hard Copies Close By

As with most countries in the world, there can be more than enough connectivity. That's until you reach that one spot where it just seems to drop for no reason or gets blocked by mountains. This is why we always recommend that visitors download a few offline maps or keep a few old school hard copy maps close by. You don’t want to get lost in the more remote parts of the island.

Where to Stay on the Diamond Circle in Iceland

Whether you prefer “roughing it” or lounging in luxury, there are more than enough types of accommodation to suit your needs and budget all along the route. The following are a few options you can consider in each accommodation category:

Tours and Packages of the Diamond Circle in Iceland

We believe that the best way to explore the island via the Diamond Circle is to do the drive yourself. Not only does this make you the captain of your own time and itinerary, but it’s also the more affordable option. But some enjoy the small group guided tours more and if you have some money to burn, the following are Diamond Circle tours that come highly recommended:

The Diamond Circle Classic (this Diamond Circle tour departs from Akureyri)

Diamond Circle Day Trip (this Diamond Circle tour departs from Akureyri)

Is a Diamond Circle Road Trip Really Worth It?

In our opinion, this would be like asking what the worth of a real diamond is. As a route that takes visitors to some of the most breathtaking sights on the island, some of the must-visit places in Iceland , and allows you to experience some of the most loved attractions and activities, it’s an absolute no-brainer whether the Diamond Circle should be on the to-do list of any trip to Iceland.

If you want to be more budget-conscious and camp in comfort, rent a campervan in Reykjavik and explore the Diamond Circle route that way. The famous song says “diamonds are forever”. Well, so are the memories you make on the Diamond Circle in Iceland.

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

By Jonathan Corum

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

Many cities lie inside the path of the total eclipse, as shown below, the width of which varies from 108 miles to 122 miles.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

People watch the 2017 total eclipse at Southern Illinois University.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, wear green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

Our Coverage of the Total Solar Eclipse

Hearing the Eclipse:  A device called LightSound is being distributed to help the blind and visually impaired experience what they can’t see .

Maine Brac es Itself :  Businesses and planning committees are eager for visitors, but some in remote Aroostook County are not sure how they feel  about lying smack in the path of totality.

A Dark Day for Buffalo:  When the sky above Buffalo briefly goes dark  on the afternoon of April 8, the city will transcend its dreary place in the public consciousness — measured as it so often is by snowstorms — if only for about three minutes. The city can’t wait.

Under the Moon’s Shadow:  The late Jay Pasachoff, who spent a lifetime chasing eclipses , inspired generations of students to become astronomers by dragging them to the ends of the Earth for a few precarious moments of ecstasy.

A Rare Return:  It is rare for a total solar eclipse to hit the same place twice — once every 366 years on average. People in certain areas will encounter April 8’s eclipse  about seven years after they were near the middle of the path of the “Great American Eclipse.”

A Small City’s Big Plans:  Let the big cities have their eclipse mega-events. In Plattsburgh, N.Y., success looks different  for everyone stopping to look up.

No Power Outages:  When the sky darkens during the eclipse, electricity production in some parts of the country will drop so sharply that it could theoretically leave tens of millions of homes in the dark. In practice, hardly anyone will notice  a sudden loss of energy.
