Former Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart discusses a busy start to the DP World Tour season and gives his verdict on Ian Poulter's comments about potentially snubbing any possible future appearance for Team Europe.

This a massive fortnight for the DP World Tour to start the new year, with back-to-back Rolex Series events offering huge points - almost treble a regular-season event.

These two events are a great opportunity to really get your season off to a cracking start and possibly get one foot in the door for the Ryder Cup later this year, so these really after massive tournaments.

  • Could Ian Poulter skip the Ryder Cup even if he qualifies?!

You might not have the superstars here like Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, but there's no doubt we still have plenty of big names and a huge amount of strength in depth.

Abu Dhabi Preview

The Hero Cup last week produced a lot of strong performances and there are plenty of players who can bring a lot of confidence from that into the next couple of weeks. Some will have more of a point to prove than others, but there's plenty of new talent on the DP World Tour to watch out for.

LIV members involved in Abu Dhabi

Let's not forget that these LIV players don't lose their record because of what they've decided to move across to - their record stays intact and certainly has to be respected.

LIV players to compete at The Masters

I think they're still people that I would look forward to watching and they still have an incredible golf game, so these players do add to the level of the field.

Poulter suggests he may snub Ryder Cup

Who can make Ryder Cup push in Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship headlines

Having said that, some are currently in the process of suing their fellow members, so it's difficult for others not to take that with anything other than a little bit of animosity. It's very, very tricky.

Live DP World Tour Golf

Sky Sports

You can see one or two of the LIV golfers playing together and practising side by side, but there's a void and there's a gap between the regular members and some of the players who have decided to take their game to another arena.

It's their choice, they've gone ahead and done that, so they've got to bear the consequences coming their way. As a result of that, there's a bit of friction out there on the practice ground and out there on the links.

I can't believe that these players took that jump and thought that everything was going to pan out the way they wanted - there had to be consequences to it and as a result of that they're now finding themselves in a sticky situation.

Should Poulter be in Ryder Cup consideration?

I appreciate that Ian Poulter was asked that question by the media but what I don't like is how a lot of it has been aired in public, with petty little grievances on social media involving those players.

Just FYI….. I’m of an age where I don’t want reminding that another birthday has come and gone! 😜 #birthdaygate — Lee Westwood (@WestwoodLee) January 11, 2023

If those LIV players kept that out of the public domain then I think things would be in a slightly better position. You can tell there's that frustration out there - you can read between the lines there and the position he finds himself in is fairly fragile.

Whatever happens, it will be Poulter's golf game that has to get him there. Is he playing well enough to make that team? I don't know whether he is right now. Regardless, I think we're at a particular time where there's maybe a case for the next generation instead.

I think there's a great opportunity now to blood some of these younger players and get them out. They have no scar tissue, they have no Ryder Cup records to protect and have no fear in terms of the media and what their expectations are.

This is a terrific opportunity, especially when you bear in mind how heavily they were beaten over at Whistling Straits last time around.

Now is the time to focus on what the DP World Tour and their young stars have got to offer, so it's a tremendous opportunity for many of that group to go and earn their first cap.

Watch the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship throughout the week live on Sky Sports. Live coverage continues Friday with Featured Groups from 3.30am on Sky Sports Golf, ahead of full coverage from 7.30am.

Dubai-based Porteous triumphs at Abu Dhabi Challenge

Golf in uae, golf in uae uae.

The Trump Dubai member carded a final round 63 to win his second Challenge Tour title

Dubai-based Garrick Porteous went toe-to-toe with five-time DP World Tour winner Alex Levy on a thrilling final day at the Abu Dhabi Challenge, before emerging victorious after making his seventh birdie of the day on the 72nd hole to clinch a one-stroke triumph.

Porteous, who moved to Dubai last September, came into the final round tied for the lead with both Levy and Wilco Nienaber, but found himself two shots adrift of the former following the Frenchman’s five-birdie front nine at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club.

But Porteous responded with a birdie barrage of his own, carding four of them coming home to reach 24 under par and secure a first Challenge Tour triumph in almost seven years, with Levy settling for second after bogeys on the 12th and 15th hampered his charge.

“It feels amazing (to be champion)” said Porteous, who is a member at Trump International Golf Club Dubai.

“I’ve loved every minute of it and Al Ain has been a great host venue. I obviously moved here recently, so to win, on what I guess is now home soil, is great.

“I’m used to the heat, grass type and speed of the greens out here now, so that massively helped in situations this week.”

While Levy will no doubt be frustrated with not being able to get over the line, the runner-up finish marks his third consecutive top ten on the 2024 Road to Mallorca schedule.

“I played really well today,” said Levy, who is looking for an immediate return to the DP World Tour after losing his playing rights last season.

“I had the chance, but it was not my day today. The game is looking good, that’s the most important thing."

Nicolai Kristensen finished two shots behind Porteous to secure third spot, while joint 54-hole lead, Nienaber, endured a torrid final round, signing for a five over 75 to tumble down the leaderboard to 38th.

On what was another low scoring day in the Garden City, Euan Walker tied Nienaber’s course record after posting a sublime 10 under par 60, which saw him surge to tied fourth on the leaderboard.

“I feel absolutely amazing,” said Walker.

“I did everything well today. I think I drove every fairway and putted exceptionally well, even holing some long ones from off the green, which is a bit of a bonus.

“As the round went on, I hit some nice approaches and converted every opportunity I had.”

The UAE’s No.1 professional golfer, Joshua Grenville-Wood, finished in a share of 55th after a second 70 of the week saw him end the tournament on seven under par.

“Not just a tough final round, a tough final three rounds!” said Grenville-Wood, who had opened with a 64 in the first round, before signing for a 69 and two 70s.

“Just couldn’t get anything going out there, struggled on the greens the last two days. It’s a shame really as I’ve hit the ball quite well this weekend, just couldn’t take advantage of it.”

Focus now turns to next week’s UAE Challenge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, where the stars of the future will go up against a host of DP World Tour winners and homegrown players, thanks to the Emirates Golf Federation’s (EGF) long-term partnership with the European Tour group.

The EGF has received 30 invitations into the event, which have gone to several UAE National Team players as well as local professionals and amateurs, to help create playing opportunities and provide a pathway for UAE golfers.

The action gets underway at the Gary Player-designed track on April 25.

The Challenge Tour returns to Abu Dhabi

In the field are the top ten players from the Road To Mallorca rankings, including the seven season winners

The Challenge Tour returns to Abu Dhabi

The Challenge Tour returns to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, for the second consecutive tournament with the UAE Challenge (April 25-28), taking place at the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, designed by Gary Player. Four Italians are competing: Gregorio De Leo, Aron Zemmer, and Pietro Bovari, who were present last week at the Abu Dhabi Challenge, along with Stefano Mazzoli, who participated in an event on the Asian Tour (Saudi Open) in Saudi Arabia.

Challenge, results

In the field are the top ten players from the Road To Mallorca rankings, including the seven season winners: Danish player Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, currently leading the standings, Swedish players Mikael Lindberg (no.

3) and Bjorn Akesson (no. 8), Welsh player Rhys Enoch (no. 5), French player David Ravetto (no. 6), and English players John Parry (no. 4) and Garrick Porteous (no. 7), who won the Abu Dhabi Challenge. Rounding out the top ten are English player Sam Hutsby (no.

9), French player Martin Couvra (no. 10), and his compatriot Alexander Lexi, the runner-up behind Porteous, determined to return to the DP World Tour where he has played for years, securing five titles, and who, thanks to three consecutive top-seven finishes, has climbed to second place.

Also teeing off are other competitors with experience on the main circuit, such as English players David Horsey (with four victories) and Chris Wood (with three), Spanish players Alvaro Quiros (with seven victories) and Alejandro Cañizares (with two), and French player Gary Stal, whose only DP World Tour victory came at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in 2015, held at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

However, they don't seem to be in the same form as Levy. Among other potential contenders are American player John Catlin, who recently won the Saudi Open and leads the Asian Tour money list, English player Chris Paisley, Danish player Nicolai Kristensen, Finnish player Tapio Pulkkanen, Northern Irish player Jonathan Caldwell, Scottish player Euan Walker, South African players Daniel Van Tonder and Oliver Bekker, and Australian player Hayden Hopewell.

Local athlete Joshua Grenville-Wood, who performed well at the Delhi Challenge (2nd) and the Ras Al Khaimah Championship (9th), is also expected to compete. Currently, the performance of De Leo, Zemmer, and Bovari has been rather inconsistent, while Mazzoli is making his seasonal debut on the tour after earning his card through the Qualifying School on the Asian Tour, participating in five events with decent results in the first three and missing the cut in the other two. The prize money is $300,000 (approximately €275,000).

Walker keen to build on momentum at Saadiyat Beach

Euan Walker is looking to build on his strong performance at last week’s Abu Dhabi Challenge as he prepares to tee it up at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in the UAE Challenge, the second of back-to-back Challenge Tour events in the UAE.

The Scot fired a course record-tying final round of ten under par to finish in a tie for fourth at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting and Golf Club – his best result of the season so far.

The 28-year-old is looking to carry on that momentum with another strong performance at Saadiyat Beach.

“To get a result like that at this stage in the season is great”, he said. “I’ve had a couple of results in the top 20 this season, but there’s a big difference between that and finishing in the top five.

“It gives me confidence going into this week. I know that my game is good and that I’m playing well.

“I think if I can consistently execute, have good control of the golf ball, and not make any major mistakes, then I can have success.”

Walker, who currently sits 23rd in the season-long Road to Mallorca Rankings, puts his low-scoring final round at Al Ain down to his accuracy off the tee, a factor he hopes to carry forward into this week.

“I drove the ball beautifully on Sunday, which put me in position to make a good score”, he said. “I was on every fairway and it’s not often you do that.

“Saadiyat Beach is a long course, but it’s relatively generous off the tee. I think the bigger hitters have an opportunity to be aggressive with the driver and significantly shorten the course.

“I’m not one of the longer hitters so I’m not going to have that opportunity, but the key for me will still be to keep the driver in the fairway.”

Walker is already a winner on the Challenge Tour – having taken victory at the 2022 British Challenge presented by Modest! Golf Management – and the Scot is targeting a return to the winner’s circle this year alongside a top 20 finish in the Rankings and promotion to the DP World Tour.

“Last week shows I’ve got the ability to shoot scores low enough to win”, he said. “I’m good enough to get over the line and I’ll be trying my best every week to make it happen.

“It would mean a lot to make it to the DP World Tour. When you’re a junior you dream of playing there one day, so promotion would be a dream come true”.

Walker is part of a strong field at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club which includes DP World Tour winners Alvaro Quiros, Alexander Levy and Chris Wood as well as Road to Mallorca Number One Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen.

Round one gets under way tomorrow at 6:30am local time, with Walker teeing off at 7:40am alongside Levy and last week’s Abu Dhabi Challenge winner Garrick Porteous.
