- Toyota Etios has a length of 4265 mm, a height of 1510 mm, and an overall wheelbase of 2550 mm. On the other hand, Swift Dzire has a length of 3995 mm, a height of 1555 mm, and an overall wheelbase of 2430 mm.
- When it comes to agility, the Etios has a higher power-to-weight balance and more torque. Etios is somewhat better in terms of ride comfort. However, the Swift Dzire has crisper driving dynamics and more accurate directional feedback. Dzire is somewhat superior in terms of handling.

Comparison of feaures: Newcomer Toyota Etios compared to the established Dzire
While Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Ford and even General Motors have accelerated their activities in the country, Toyota has been slow and late in bringing in a mass-market model. But now, with the recent launch of the Toyota Etios sedan , the country’s entry-level sedan segment is heating up. The Etios is positioned squarely against the current and runaway segment leader – the Maruti Suzuki Dzire.
Here we take a look at the different aspects and features of these two mid-segment heavies and find out how they square up against each other.
First off, let’s be honest. The Suzuki Dzire is a Swift with a boot. It is not an all-new car. So when you look at it head on or from the front three-quarters angle, all is fine. But get behind the car and the problems start. The boot looks like it has been tacked on in a hurry (which actually is the case as Maruti rushed to make the best put of the Swift’s success.)
The Toyota Etios, on the other hand, has been designed as a sedan from the start. And it shows. The car looks bigger and more complete than the Dzire. But this is not to say that this alone makes it a winner . . . because its looks are rather boring. There is none of the exuberance of design you get in the chunky Swift Dzire (when looking at it from the front). It’s all about smooth, staid, straight lines. In the interior, the Etios looks quite contemporary and sports a centrally-mounted instrument panel, much the rage these days, with offset AC vents. The Etios offers more space on the inside with roomy interiors as compared to the Dzire. The three spoke steering wheel comes in dual tone along with the rest of the interior. The Etios has modern interiors which look attractive and clean. A class-first ‘clean air filter’ comes standard across all grades for purified air in the cabin. Scooped out headliners and the tall seating give you that sense of space, while leg room as well as shoulder room at the rear is pretty decent too.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire sports the upper-end Swift’s dashboard and interiors. It is laid out in the traditional format with the central console in the middle and the speedo, tacho and various gauges in a scooped out shell in front of the driver. The Zxi and Zdi variants of the Dzire have steering mounted audio controls as well. These variants also come with an automatic climate control (ACC) system, which enables you to set the cabin temperature. Leg room at the back, however, is quite limited with the front seats pushed back.
Just another point to note, the lighting of the instrumentation in the Suzuki Dzire is rather dim. With dark plastic surrounding you, a brightly illuminated console could do well to add cheer to the interiors but this is missing. The entire dash layout is adventurous for the Toyota, with the central instrument console placement. In the day, it looks all right, but in the night, when you put on the headlamps, it is vastly improved and cheerful.
The quality of plastics is something that’s a bit of a disappointment, mainly because this is a Toyota product. It would be acceptable in a Suzuki, but not in a Toyota — even if it is a model that competes with a Suzuki.
Engine: Petrol Etios vs petrol DZire
Powering the front wheels of the Toyota Etios is a 1,500cc four-cylinder 16-valve DOHC petrol engine that develops 88.8 bhp at 5600 rpm and 13.5 kgm at 3000 rpm, which is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. It is just marginally more powerful than the Maruti Dzire petrol (85 bhp) and torquey as well. The extra cubes should mean the engine is not stressed. The K series engine of the Maruti Dzire is a dependable workhorse. Though not as brilliant as the 1.3 litre Fiat Multijet unit found in the diesel variant, the new-generation petrol engine delivers on mileage and performance. Initially there is a sluggishness about it, but it smoothens out as you move up the rev range. The engine produces 85 PS at 6000 rpm and a torque of 113 Nm at 4500 rpm. The engine of the Dzire is mated to a 5 speed synchromesh manual transmission. The engine has MPFI (Multi Point Fuel Injection) supply system and is BS IV compliant.
Ride and Features
The ride quality offered by both cars is quite good. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire has a softer suspension setup than the Etios. The Toyota Etios is said to handle bumps and potholes with a little bit more ease than its competitor.
However, engine noise and road surface noise are a bit intrusive in the Etios. Suzuki has not been a scrooge here. Sound-absorbing materials surround the cabin and do a good job of keeping outside noises to a minimum. The engine is also smooth, and vibrations are low even at high speeds.
The ride actually is pretty sorted out in both the cars. Body roll is slightly more in the Dzire as it is taller than the Etios. At high speeds, early reports suggest, the engine of the Etios feels less stressed but the vibrations seep through onto the steering.
The base variant, Toyota Etios J, is very basic and it doesn’t feature power steering, power windows, remote central locking and comes with black door handles and black outside rear view mirrors. The top variant, the VX, is fully loaded with these features: dual SRS airbags, ABS with EBD , air conditioning, power steering, power windows, remote central locking, tilt steering, CD/MP3 Player, steering mounted audio controls, alloy wheels, cooled glovebox, rear defogger, fog lamps, body colored door handles and outside rear view mirrors.
There is much of the same equipment in the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. ABS, dual SRS airbags, electronic power steering, power windows, remote locking, tilt steering, allow wheels body colored door handles and ORVMs are all part of the higher end Vxi and Zxi variant. Both the vehicles are evenly matched in terms of equipment.
The Suzuki Dzire and the Toyota Etios are close competitors. The Dzire has chirpy performance and somewhat clunky looks while the Etios feels more like a more complete package. Toyota have invested a good deal of money into this India-specific project, and while it doesn’t show immediately on the outside, the quality and promise of Toyota go a long way. For Maruti Suzuki, the Dzire was an obvious choice to build. It stood upon the success of the Swift and made a bigger car to meet the buyer’s needs and to fill a gap in the market.
It’s hard to pick from the two: Go for the Dzire if you like its looks and need Maruti’s after-sales service convenience; go for the Etios if you’re looking for a fresh face and want Toyota’s authoritative ‘quality’ stamp.
The Toyota Etios is priced between Rs. 4.96 lakh and 6.86 lakh while the Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes at Rs.5.75 lakh-Rs. 6.32lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.

If you are looking to buy a mid-range sedan, both the Toyota Platinum Etios and Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire are amongst the strongest contenders. The newly launched Toyota Platinum Etios is an updated version of the previously launched Etios. The Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, on the other hand, is the sedan variant of the Swift hatchback, and has a strong foothold in its own segment.
Does the newly launched Platinum Etios fair well against Maruti Swift Dzire, the undisputed king of the compact sedan segment? Which of them should you chose as your next ride? Let’s take a sneak peek through both of them so that you can make an informed choice.
Toyota Platinum Etios vs Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire
Both of these cars looks alike as their hatchback counterpart from the front profile, the difference can be seen only after the C pillar. The Etios looks far better balanced with better integrated boot, whereas the Dzire’s boot seems like an afterthought due to short and stubby design. In terms of dimensions the Etios is longer than the Dzire. The slight advantage of Etios in terms of dimension, translates into longer wheelbase. When it comes to the boot size the Etios clearly has the advantage of carrying more luggages due to the bigger boot.
Once you step inside, Etios Liva is quite spacious, with good quality of plastics, decent looking interiors, two tone seats on the high end variants, a nice dual tone dashboard which houses large AC vents which keeps the occupants cool even in the scorching heat. However the awkwardly placed speedometer and MID is a sore to the eyes. The rear seat of the Platinum Etios is quite roomy with ample amount of leg space and headroom.
Swift Dzire on the other hand is just like the Swift, but the interiors are finished in dual tone, the black and beige interior is a welcome change over the Swift. One can easily understand the Dzire shares some parts from the Maruti parts bin, including the power window switches and other switches. The rear legroom is not as quite roomy as the Platinum Etios and only 2 occupants can seat comfortably. However, the legroom and the headroom is just decent if compared with the Etios.
Both the compact sedans are equipped with petrol and diesel engines. The Dzire is equipped with a VVT 1.2 liter petrol engine, which churns out 83bhp and 115nm of torque. The VVT engine is quiet joy to drive, with minimum or no vibrations, the engine loves to be revved to its limit. The engine is further connected to a 5 speed transmission, which transfers the power to the front wheels. The Dzire is also equipped with a fiat sourced 1.3 liter multijet diesel engine, and it makes maximum power of 73.9bhp and maximum torque of 190nm, just like the petrol engine the diesel engine also loves to be revved but slight turbo lag affects the low end performance of this diesel engine.
On the other hand the Platinum Etios is equipped with 1.5liter petrol and a 1.4liter D4D CRDI diesel engine. Both the engine churns out 89bhp of power, 132nm of torque and 67.07bhp of power and 170nm of torque respectively.
On the engine front both the cars are equipped with nice engines and they perform brilliantly on the roads. The power delivered by Dzire is slightly better, but additional weight of about 100 Kg offsets that difference brings the power to weight ratio of these two compact sedans to same level.
Handling, Safety and Performance:
The Swift Dzire got all its handling DNA from its sibling the Swift, and just like the Swift the Dzire is also a great handler, it tackles corners with ease, the body roll is quite less than the Etios. While on highway the rear occupants are comfortable with very less or no vertical movement. The suspension of the Dzire is quite stiff and while on low speeds potholes tends to filter inside the cabin, but as the car builds up speed the suspension works like charm. On the safety front the compact sedan’s top models are equipped with ABS and dual front airbags. However, we would have appreciated Maruti even more if they have had equipped the low end models with ABS and airbags.
The Toyota Platinum Etios on the other hand is also a nice handling car, but the softly sprung suspension doesn’t inspire confidence while on high speed. The Etios also has quite a bit of body roll around the corners and the rear occupants can feel the vertical movement of the sedan. However, while on low speeds the Toyota is quite comfortable. In terms of safety the Platinum Etios is better with ABS and airbags standard across the range.
So, if you are on a budget and looking for a compact sedan then the Swift Dzire is a good choice, but the lack of storage spaces, cramped interiors and small boot lets it down. However in terms of handling and performance the Dzire is way ahead of the Etios. On the other hand the Etios recently got a facelift which has made the car slightly better looking. In terms of space, bigger boot and safety equipments the Platinum Etios is a better choice.

Toyota Etios vs Suzuki DZire vs Honda Amaze: Which one has the lowest running costs?
They’re a favourite with fleet buyers and budget-conscious families, so it’s only logical that running costs weigh heavily on the minds of buyers who are interested in these small sedans. We chose three examples from the low end of the marketplace – the Toyota Etios, Suzuki DZire, and Honda Amaze – and evaluated them to see which one has the lowest running costs.
The compact sedan body style might be declining in popularity, but they still suit the needs of many buyers to a tee. They are especially important to the entry-level marketplace, where small sedans make up a large portion of fleet purchases, and appeal to family-car buyers who need value more than they need status. With the requirements of these buyers in mind, we investigated one of the key elements in determining which car to buy: their running costs.
Can you pre-determine your car’s running costs?
When considering a car’s running costs, it’s important to look at it over the full life-cycle. This allows third- or fourth owners of older cars to get a clearer picture of possible future expenses, and it helps first owners to determine at what age their cars may become too expensive to run. Unfortunately, most of the cars available new on our market are still too young to give accurate long-term information.
There are however certain key points which could give an idea of a car’s general upkeep requirements. This includes the length of the service intervals, the cost of replacement tyres, and the prices of service parts. For new-car buyers, the emphasis might perhaps shift more towards resale value, service plans, insurance premiums, and fuel consumption.
With these considerations in mind, we decided to pitch the ever-popular Toyota Etios against the Suzuki DZire and Honda Amaze in a running cost comparison. We picked our opponents as close as possible to the price point of an entry-level Toyota Etios Xi sedan, and then looked at the numbers. Which one has the lowest running costs?
Let’s meet the contenders!
1. toyota etios xi sedan (r 197 100).
Xi trim denotes the entry-level of the Toyota Etios range, which means that it is somewhat sparsely-equipped, but not quite barren, either. Power steering, ABS with EBD, air conditioning, 4 electric windows and remote central locking, a USB/Bluetooth-enabled audio system, and rear ISOFIX child seat anchors are all present and accounted for.
It’s powered by a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, sending 66 kW and 132 Nm to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox. This is the only engine/transmission available in the Etios, so all variants will have similar performance and fuel efficiency. Also note that the Etios sedan has a massive luggage compartment – in fact, it’s one of the largest boots you could find in a sedan of any size.

2. Suzuki DZire 1.2 GL (R 185 900)
As the highest trim level (currently) available in the Suzuki DZire range, the 1.2 GL derivative matches the Etios on most key points, with the notable addition of steering wheel-mounted remote controls for its audio system and electric side mirror adjustment. For the rest, it’s much like you’ll find in the more-expensive Etios: comfortably-equipped, but not opulent by any means. Its cabin design, and fit and finish are a whole lot nicer than you’d get in the Toyota, though.
Power comes from 1.2-litre 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated engine, which produces 61 kW and 113 Nm. This power trade-off (against the Etios) could be seen as fair, given the Suzuki’s smaller pricetag, and performance is surprisingly spritely, thanks to the DZire’s extremely low kerb weight of 890 kg (the lightest in this group).

3. Honda Amaze 1.2 Trend (R179 900)
This is the least-expensive car in this group, but mostly matches the other two on standard equipment. It loses out on remote control for its central locking, but features steering wheel-mounted remote controls for its audio system (like the Suzuki does), and its cabin quality is about par with the Suzuki’s as well (and far ahead of the Etios). All in all, it’s not a bad value proposition at the pricetag, although neither the Amaze nor the DZire can hold a candle to the Etios’s enormous luggage compartment.
Under the bonnet is another 1.2-litre, non-turbo 4-cylinder engine, this time with an Etios-matching 66 kW but a lowest-in-group 110 Nm on offer. It’s barely lighter than the larger Etios, however, which means that the torque deficit will certainly have a negative impact on performance.

Which one has the lowest running costs?
Purchase price and depreciation.
This department results in a mixed result for the Etios. It’s the most expensive car here for a start, but its will retain more of its value for longer, purely based on Toyota’s (well-earned) reputation for durability and strong market demand. Initial depreciation is very modest, with very low-mileage 2020-model Etios Xi sedans listed here on AutoTrader retaining between 93- and 96% of their value when new.
Similarly low-mileage 2020 Honda Amaze Trends listed on AutoTrader only retain between 87- and 92% of their new-car values, and nearly-new 2020 Suzuki DZire GLs on AutoTrader retain between 86- and 91% of their new-car values. The take-away here is that, while the Etios sedan costs more to begin with, it will compensate for its price premium with higher resale values right from the start.
Fuel efficiency
The Suzuki is the undisputed king in this department, with real-life, mixed-cycle average consumption easily hovering in the low-5 ℓ/100 km bracket. Suzuki claims an average consumption figure of 4.9 ℓ/100 km, and it’s likely that conservative buyers may easily be able to actually achieve that figure in normal driving.
Next up is the Honda Amaze, with a claimed average of 5.6 ℓ/100 km. We never managed to get anywhere near that number when we reviewed one in 2019, however, and returned an average of 6.6 ℓ/100 km over a week of mixed-cycle driving. That’s still better than the Etios, though, which likely won’t drop below a 7 ℓ/100 km average at all – something that’s reflected in its claimed average consumption of 5.9 ℓ/100 km as well. Such is the price buyers will have to pay for getting the perkiest-performing small sedan of the lot.

Warranties, maintenance plans, and service intervals
Both the Suzuki and the Toyota have warranties for 3 years or 100 000 km, while the Honda extends that to 5 years or 200 000 km. All three cars have service plans included in their purchase prices, though, and they’re all good for 30 000 km (or 2 years for the Suzuki and Honda, with Toyota not putting a time limit on their service plan offering).
There’s a catch, though: the Etios is the only car here with 10 000 km service intervals, in contrast to the 15 000 km intervals of the other two. This means that, by the time the odometer has ticked over to 90 000 km (for instance), the Etios will have 9 services under its belt, in comparison to the 6 services of the DZire and Amaze.
Over a longer term, that adds up to a not-inconsiderable disadvantage against the Etios, making its long-term servicing rather more expensive than for the other two, purely by virtue of the frequency with which it has to visit a service centre. Service parts cost roughly the same between the three manufacturers, though, with significant price deviations only resulting from different dealerships using different mark-ups on their part supplies.
Based on its stronger warranty and longer service intervals, this criterion has to go to the Honda, with the Suzuki is second place and the Toyota bringing up the rear.

Only one of these cars is considered to be a high-risk vehicles by the underwriters, and that’s the Toyota Etios. Partly due to Toyota’s general popularity among car thieves, and partly because they have a reputation of being very quick to steal, Etios insurance premiums are likely to be about 20% higher than for either of the other two. Also counting against the Etios is its higher purchase (and thus replacement) value, so it has to come last in this department.
In mitigation, the Etios has very affordable collision repair parts prices, and thanks to strong aftermarket support and very simple construction, accident repairs will be a lot less costly than for these less-common opponents.
The Amaze and DZire don’t have the same appeal to car thieves, and their relatively underpowered engines immediately mean a lower risk to insurers as well. Let’s call it a draw in the insurance stakes between the Suzuki and the Honda, then, as premiums will vary mostly based on the projected mileage to be covered and where the cars are kept and driven, both in the daytime and overnight.

Tyre replacement
Standard tyre prices play a significant part in any running cost evaluation, but it’s not always a given that smaller tyres will be less expensive – if they’re less commonly used, they might be harder to find and more expensive to replace than larger tyres which are in wider use.

The Suzuki DZire rolls on surprisingly meaty (for its performance) 185/65R15 tyres, which are surprisingly easy to find and quite affordable (in most cases). Browsing through a leading tyre retailer’s website showed 15 different brands of tyre in this size, with prices varying between about R700 and R 1300 per tyre. The bottom line is that it could be either very cheap (with house-brand tyres) or quite expensive (with premium-brand tyres) to keep a DZire on good rubber.
The Honda Amaze also uses 15-inch tyres, but in a slightly smaller 175/65R15 size. In a weird twist, the same tyre retailer doesn’t list a single replacement tyre in this size, and neither do some other retailers. One retailer does offer a “house-brand” tyre in the Amaze’s size, though, with a similar pricetag to the least-expensive DZire tyre. This means that new brand-name tyres for an Amaze will have to specially-sourced, which doesn’t bode well for affordability in the long term.
The Toyota Etios Xi is a clear winner in this regard, though. Its 175/65R14 tyres are freely available (with a choice of 19 possible replacements at the major retailer), and even the name-brand tyres are very affordable – we’re looking at Continental tyres for less than R700 a tyre, and even Pirellis slipping in below the R900 mark.
Long-term running costs may be difficult to predict, but going on the indicators listed above, the Toyota Etios may just be the most expensive car to run among this trio. Its tyres are less expensive, and it will have the best value retention, but its need for more-frequent servicing, much higher insurance premiums, and heavier fuel consumption count against it. Of course, it’s a Toyota, so it’s likely to be exceptionally durable, but the same could also be said of both of the others.
The next one to fall has to be the Honda Amaze. While it has the best warranty in this group, it’s still thirstier than the Suzuki, and its near-unobtainable tyres will present a serious obstacle. This leaves the Suzuki DZire as our overall running cost winner: it’s the most frugal on fuel use, inexpensive to insure, and uses easy-to-obtain tyres as standard.

Toyota Etios Diesel Vs Maruti Swift Dzire Diesel–Which is Better and Why?
Toyota has launched it Toyota Etios Diesel today with the same D4D engine which powers the Toyota Corolla Altis Diesel in India. In continuation of our Car Comparison Series on Car Blog India, today we will compare the Etios Diesel with its nearest rival, Maruti Swift Dzire Diesel. Toyota Etios Exteriors Vs Maruti Swift Dzire Exteriors
Etios Liva as a car looks very elegantly designed, however, it also looks too simple with some chrome garnish giving it a retro element in aesthetic. The contemporary no-nonsense design of Etios looks appealing and attractive because of its simplicity and plain looks. In terms of dimensions, its longer than the Swift and does offer better cabin space and storage. It also runs pretty stable because of a longer wheelbase compared to Dzire.

Swift Dzire on the other hand, looks kind of not-cool because it is like a longer Swift. While the Swift looks very nice standalone, bit Swift Dzire kind of kills that look with unexpected boot hanging behind it. Front the front, its exactly the same as Swift, from rear, it looks slightly different. Although the Etios and Etios Liva also share similar front, but both look elegant on their own, but when it comes to Swift and Dzire, I personally don’t appreciate the looks of Dzire much. Also the cabin space od Dzire is lesser than the Etios.

If I have a choice of these two cars based only on looks, I would go for Etios Diesel for its better aesthetic appeal.
Toyota Etios Interiors Vs Maruti Swift Dzire Interiors

On the Interiors, Etios Liva is spacious, has good quality of plastics, good looking interiors, two tone fabric seats on high end variants and dual tone dashboard with large AC vents placed asymmetric to ensure good airflow in cabin. The rear passenger leg space in Etios Diesel is quite ample for an average built adult and it can also seat three adults in moderate comfort.

The dashboard quality, fit and finish of interiors and door trims is quite satisfactory and gives passengers a good feel from Inside.

Maruti Swift Dzire interiors look dated compared to the new cars in its segment. The plastic quality is not too goof and the interior feel a little dull. The fit and finish is average and rear legroom is slightly cramped just like with the old Swift. The new Swift Dzire is awaited to be launched in a few month, we hope the problem will be addressed as the new Swift 2011 has improved leg space at rear. Overall, the quality, feel and finish of Dzire interiors is not too impressive.

In terms of Interiors, the Etios is way better than the existing Maruti Dzire (launched in 2008 in India). The new model of Dzire is expected to be based on new Swift, but as of now, Etios Diesel is a clear winner in terms of Interiors with better space, storage and quality.

Looking at the engine specs, its very difficult to select one as the Maruti Dzire Engine by Fiat is very reliable and well renowned, but the Toyota D4D engine is also equally well established. The power delivered by Dzire is more, but additional weight of about 100 Kg offsets that difference bringing the power to weight ratio of both these sedans to same level. I would call this comparison a tie from engine’s perspective.
Toyota Etios Diesel Handling and Performance Vs Maruti Swift Dzire Diesel Handling and Performance
Swift Dzire has got the same suspensions DNA as the Swift old model has, which makes it a very good handling car, however, at high speeds, it is kind of unsafe without ABS as the braking may not be very safe on bad roads. The handling, steering feedback and suspension of Dzire is very appreciable.
Etios, with its long wheel base, good suspensions and good feedback steering feels good enough. The handling characteristic of Etios are good in absolute terms, but it does not beat Swift Dzire. So based on handling, Swift Dzire fares better.

Comparing the price and features of these cars, the Swift Dzire Ldi seems to be too lucrative in terms of pricing with the bare bone variant without any features with an aggressive price of Rs. 5.85 Lakhs which is about Rs. 60,000 cheaper than the base diesel variant of Etios Diesel. The reason behind such low pricing is that the Dzire Ldi does not offer many features like tilt Adjustable steering, power windows, central locking, body coloured door handles and outside mirrors, cooled glove box, clean air filter, rear hear restrains, keyless entry etc. However, for a budget buyer, these features are not very important and the Dzire Ldi makes an attractive buy.
However if we compare the fully loaded Swift Zdi variant and compare it with the nearly priced VD variant of Etios Diesel (its priced Rs. 22,000 higher than Dzire Zdi), the features which differ are – the larger 15 inch alloy wheels on Etios, cooled Glove box of Etios, better quality of plastics and interior quality of Etios. However, Dzire Zdi does offer automatic climate control which Etios VD does not offer.
Car Blog India verdict – Toyota Etios Diesel Vs Maruti Swift Dzire Diesel
If you are on a budget and don’t want a spend much, Swift Dzire is a very good budget sedan for you, however it may not feel great on interiors, it does handle very well and offers a good value for money.
If you are not on tight budget and can spend some extra bucks, go for Etios VD or VDX as these cars offer better safety, interior space, agility and features at a slightly higher compared to Maruti Swift Dzire.
