Ladies European Tour: England's Rosie Davies sees hopes fade at South African Women's Open
Watch final round of South African Women's Open live on Sky Sports Golf from 11am on Sunday - Belgium's Manon de Roey leads by three strokes with English duo Rosie Davies and Gabriella Cowley six shots adrift as they pursue first Ladies European Tour victories
Saturday 27 April 2024 18:25, UK
England's Rosie Davies slipped six shots off the pace at the Investec South African Women's Open with Belgium's Manon de Roey to take a three-stroke lead into Sunday's final round.
Davies, who shared the lead after round one and trailed de Roey by just one shot after round two, carded a second successive one-under 71 and is now at eight under for the event at Erinvale Country & Golf Estate.
The 34-year-old was at 10 under for the tournament but then double bogeyed 17 and is now tied for fifth with compatriot Gabriella Cowley who, like Davies, is eying a first win on the Ladies European Tour.

Cowley shot a five-under 67 on Saturday with the highlight an eagle three at the par-five seventh, while leader De Roey registered a six-under 66, including nine birdies, to propel herself to 14 under.
De Roey in command as she targets second LET victory
De Roey, who reeled off four birdies in a row between 11th and 14th holes, said: "I tried to stay patient all day. I started quite strong and created chances for myself.

"I thought it was going to be more windy and, to be honest, I prefer the wind because I can shape the ball more. But I just picked my targets and lines and tried to commit to every shot.
"I'm really looking forward to the final round. I've been playing quite solid all year with a few top-10s. I'll just keep doing what I've been doing, make some putts and we'll see what happens."

De Roey has one victory on the Ladies European Tour so far, at the 2022 Aramco Team Series - Bangkok when she beat Sweden's Johanna Gustavsson by three strokes.
Her nearest challenger in South Africa is now Ines Laklalech on 11 under, with the Moroccan recording a seven-under 65, in which she went blemish-free across her first 16 holes.
However, Laklalech then dropped two shots at the 16th, denting her hopes of overhauling De Roey on the final day and securing a second Ladies European Tour title, after the 2022 Lacoste Ladies Open de France.

Rose Ladies Series 2024 Review
Here's a round-up of this year's Rose Ladies Series, with five events across two weeks this April
Back for its fifth year , the Rose Ladies Series was set to get underway, like it did last year, at West Lancashire Golf Club on Monday April 15. There were 52 players in the field, including LET player turned commentator Sophie Walker who was making a return to compete in a professional golf competition.
However, as with a lot of competitions this winter and spring, the weather had other ideas and with winds hitting over 65mph, the event had to be cancelled before a ball had even been hit.
It was such a shame that this year's series had to start in this way, especially at a venue like West Lancs which has been a long-time supporter and fantastic host of Rose Ladies Series events over the years.
Formby Ladies Golf Club
Luckily for players, the week was based in the north-west of England, so on Wednesday April 17, with the weather improved, 53 players teed it up at Formby Ladies Golf Club. The first time the club has hosted the Rose Ladies Series.
One of the earlier starters, LET player Becky Morgan set the clubhouse target at one-under-par, with a neat scorecard that consisted of two birdies and one bogey. But it was the 12:10pm tee time that really stole the show, the LET trio of Amy Boulden, Billie-Jo Smith and Chloe Williams seemed to inspire each other.
Early birdies from Boulden and Smith meant that they were tied at two-under-par after three holes. By the seventh tee, Smith had pulled a shot clear at three-under, as Boulden had dropped a shot at five to get to one-under whilst Williams had birdied five and six to get to two-under.
At the turn, Smith remained at three-under and Boulden had clawed one back after a birdie on the 8th. Unfortunately, the 8th hole had proved costly for Williams as she carded a double bogey and then a further bogey followed on nine to drop her back to one-over-par.
By the 14th hole, Smith and Boulden were both at three-under-par at the top of the leaderboard. Another birdie on 14 gave Smith the edge and a bogey birdie finish in the last three holes for Boulden meant that she had to settle for second place. Williams rallied on the back nine and claimed third at two-under-par.
This was Billie-Jo Smith's first Rose Ladies Series victory, afterwards she said:
"Thanks to the Rose Series for giving us these opportunities to play at the start of our season at great golf courses like this one. And to Justin and Kate for continuing to support female golf"
Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club
Two days later, a field of 48 players took to Southport & Ainsdale for the second year in a row. Tough conditions on Friday meant that going low was going to be difficult.
Setting the pace was Rachel Bailey, who went out in the fourth group of the day and shot a round of four-over-par (76). She was joined by Fromby Ladies winner Billie-Jo Smith two groups later, who after having a double bogey on the second hole and two further bogeys on four and five, added three birdies and three bogeys to also finish on four-under-par.
It was over an hour before there was a change of the clubhouse leader. Bel Wardle, who was even par after 13 holes, bogeyed three of her final five holes for a three-over-par 75. Wardle was then joined by Sara Gee, who with a final bogey on 15, also signed for a 75.
In the end, the battle came down to the final two groups. Chloe Williams, winner of the 2021 RLS event at Bearwood Lakes, who was playing in the penultimate group had a fantastic eagle on seven to cancel out bogeys on the two previous holes. The Welsh player was even par on the tee at 15 but a bogey there and one of the final hole meant she held the clubhouse lead at two-over-par.
All eyes then moved to the final group where Ellie Gower had come back from four bogeys in her first four holes to be one-over-par and in the lead heading into the final hole. Whilst Cara Gainer had had five straight pars, from 13 to 17, and was one shot further back at two-over-par. The 18th at Southport & Ainsdale was a 342 yard par 4, with a finish right in front of the clubhouse.
The one round shoot out that the Rose Ladies Series is known for, came down to the wire with both accomplished English players going for the win, but it was Gainer who just pipped Gower to the top spot with a birdie on the last whilst Gower dropped a shot back.
Like Smith, this was Gainer's first Rose Ladies Series victory. The LET player had made the decision not to travel to South Africa to take part in the SA swing, something that definitely paid off as she collected her £10,000 cheque.
"So amazing that the Rose Series keeps getting supported, I chose not to play a tour event this year to play up here, so thank you to Justin and Kate for their ongoing support."
EDGA at Southport & Ainsdale
Alongside the main event, four players from EDGA (formerly the European Disabled Golf Association) competed to take home their own slice of Rose Ladies Series history. The not-for-profit body has a focus on the importance of making golf a viable sporting option for more women as it seeks to encourage 500,000 new people with a disability to join the game.
The victory went to Aimi Bullock , Director of Women's Golf at EDGA, who put on an impressive display in tough conditions to score 37 Stableford points.
Sunningdale Golf Club
Due to logistics and other website commitments, Women & Golf were only able to be on the ground at one of the Rose Ladies Series events this year. As well as coming to watch the golf, we also hosted our competition winner Liz and her three friends from Woburn Golf Club.
This was the second time that Sunningdale had hosted the Rose Ladies Series but this time the players were taking on the Old Course.
Dame Laura Davies got play underway, with 60 players in the field. The golfing legend was playing alongside Hayley Davis, who had already won twice on the RLS at Brokenhurst Manor and Bearwood Lakes in 2022.
Emily Toy, who was in the fifth group out, made the turn at one-under-par. An eagle at the 452 yard par 5 10th hole, saw her leap to the top of the leaderboard. Another birdie followed on 12 but was cancelled out by a bogey on 17. The English player claimed the clubhouse lead at three-under-par and then had a long wait as the 16 groups behind had to complete their rounds.
Amateur Annabel Peaford made a strong start and was three-under through five holes. A double on the par 4 sixth would end up derailing her charge and with another four bogeys, she finished in a tie for 18th at four-over-par.
A couple of groups behind Annabel Peaford, Southport & Ainsdale contender Ellie Gower was also putting together a good round. She was two-under heading down the final hole in search of a birdie to tie the lead, unfortunately, it was a bogey instead and a finish in a tie for third place.
Lauren Horsford, who won at West Lancs in 2022, made a birdie on 16 to get to one-under. Two pars would follow so she also tied for third place.
Our Women & Golf competition winners were fully behind Woburn's Megan Dennis, who was three groups behind Horsford. The support obviously spurred her on as she was four-under through 10 holes. A couple of bogeys then followed on 12 and 13. Having only turned professional after LET Q-School in Decemember, Megan is relatively new to the professional scene. A birdie on 14 tied her with Toy and three pars followed. The difficult finishing par 4 could only provide disappointment for the 24-year-old and her supporters as a double bogey dropped her to tied third with Horsford and Gower.
Disappointment had also occured in the group ahead of Dennis. Cara Gainer, fresh from her victory on the previous Friday at Southport & Ainsdale, had put together a very good round, which included an eagle on the 265 yard par 4 ninth hole to get to three-under. She added another birdie at 10, with a bogey at 12 and further birdie at 14 to be four-under with four holes to play. The 28-year-old couldn't keep up momentum and a bogey on 16, saw her tie with Toy and a further bogey on 18 gave the Cornish golfer the victory.
"We've all really enjoyed the Rose Ladies Series, thank you to Justin and Kate for continuing to support the series and maintaining the platform to play."
A special thanks must go to the Rose Ladies Series organisers who put together a fantastic competition package for our Women & Golf reader. As well as enjoying the golf, we were treated to a delicious three course lunch and a Q&A with LET star Hayley Davis.
Walton Heath Golf Club
We're not sure there is much to write about Walton Heath as two time Rose Ladies Series winner Hayley Davis dominated the event from early on Wednesday 24 April. She was clearly spurred on from meeting me and the competition winners at Sunningdale! 😉
With 57 players in the field, Davis was out in the fourth group at 9am on the New Course. The front nine was a birdie fest with ones carded on two, four, five, six and eight to make the turn in 30 shots and five-under-par. The Dorset golfer was seven-under after 13 holes after adding two more birdies at 11 and 13. She completed her bogey-free round with one more birdie on 17 to shoot an eight-under-par 64.
Thalia Kirby, who was in the fourth to last group, was four-under through eight holes and looked to challenge her fellow English golfer. The only blemish on her card came on nine and even though she did find a couple more birdies, five-under was still three shots behind.
Another player of note was Sunningdale winner Emily Toy who finished on her own in third at four-under-par.
Hayley Davis added a third Rose Ladies Series title to her CV just before heading out to Korea for the next Aramco Team Series event on the Ladies European Tour, an event where she thrives in the team atmosphere.
"Thanks to Justin and Kate for continuing to put on this series, I speak for all of the girls when I say there is real excitement when it's announced every year and the girls are always looking forward to playing in the events."
And just like that, the Rose Ladies Series comes to an end for the fifth year! Whilst speculation starts as to whether it will return in 2025, the team behind it move their efforts towards the Rose Ladies Open which will take place on the LET Access Series from September 6-8 at Brocket Hall.

2024 Myrtle Beach Classic odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's nailed 11 majors
Sportsline's proven model simulated the myrtle beach classic 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.
The PGA Tour has two events in action this week, including the inaugural edition of the Myrtle Beach Classic at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club. The course is nestled right up on the beach in South Carolina, so wind is expected to come in off the ocean and create some potentially tricky situations for the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic field. Matt Wallace is coming off a strong showing at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and he will be looking to build on that T4 finish against a weaker field this week. Wallace ranks inside the top 25 on the PGA Tour in scoring average, which is why he is among the top golfers on the PGA odds board for the Myrtle Beach Classic at 35-1.
Erik van Rooyen is the 25-1 favorite in the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic odds, followed by Ben Griffin (28-1) and Doug Ghim (30-1). Which golfers should you back with your 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic bets? Before making any 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .
SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.
The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.
In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now that the Myrtle Beach Classic 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .
Top 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the Myrtle Beach Classic 2024: Griffin, who is listed second in the odds this week, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top five. Griffin finished T13 in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson last week after missing the cut in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He has finished inside the top 40 in five of his last six tournaments, but he has not posted a top-10 finish during that stretch.
In fact, his only top-10 of the season came in The American Express in January when he finished T9 at 24-under. He ranks outside the top 160 on the PGA Tour in total driving and outside the top 120 in GIR percentage. The model does not think he has the tools to put four strong rounds together this week, making him a golfer to avoid with Myrtle Beach Classic bets.
Another surprise: Andrew Novak, a 40-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Novak missed the cut in his first three tournaments of the season, but he has responded with an outstanding stretch of play.
He has made the cut in eight of his last nine events, including top-10 finishes at the WM Phoenix Open, Mexico Open and Cognizant Classic. Novak finished T23 in the Zurich Classic before carding a T30 finish in the CJ Cup Byron Nelson last week. He ranks eighth on the PGA Tour in sand save percentage, which sets him up for success at a beach course that features plenty of bunkers. See who else to pick here .
How to make 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic picks
The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 35-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .
Who will win the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Myrtle Beach Classic 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Myrtle Beach Classic leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters.

Playing on the PGA Tour is a big deal. But life on tour isn't always easy
Mike Ehrmann
EAST LOTHIAN, Scotland — News flash: Golf at the highest level is difficult. News flash (2): But even difficult golf can be fun. And both were on display during press conferences that formed part of the media day for July’s Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club.
On the dark side of life on tour was Bob MacIntyre. Still relatively fresh from a European Ryder Cup debut and gaining his PGA Tour card through his stellar play on the DP World Tour in 2023, the Scot has found life in the New World to be so very different and a lot more stressful. In 12 PGA Tour starts this season, the 27-year-old from the remote Highland town of Oban has missed six cuts and recorded only two top-10s, one of those alongside Thomas Detry in the recent Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The big issue seems to have been chipping and putting on grasses he has only rarely seen before.
“If you've got a straightforward chip out here into a strong grain it changes the way you've got to play the shot,” he said. “I changed my technique slightly to try and help myself and give myself a bigger margin for error. But even on basic chips that I would be fancy to chip in, I'm thinking, ‘right, do I get the putter on this, just kind of damage limitation kind of stuff?’ When it goes wrong, it [the ball] only goes a yard in front of you. Then you've got a six-foot putt with the grain going the opposite way from the break; how do you read that?”
Much more upbeat was Tom Kim, whose two appearances in the Scottish Open have so far produced a third-place finish and a tie for sixth. It’s safe to say the 21-year-old South Korean is a fan of seaside golf, even if it is a little bit of a stretch to describe the Tom Doak-designed Renaissance as a traditional “links.”
More From Golf DIgest
Still, working from the bottom up, it is hard to imagine a more downbeat 20 minutes or so than those in which MacIntyre detailed how he has struggled with life far from home, both on and off the course in 2024. Even a three-week return to the friends and family comforts offered by his hometown (population 8,500) gave his overall mood only a temporary boost.
“When you're on the European DP World Tour, it's very friendly,” said the Scot, who emerged unbeaten from the three matches he played in his Ryder Cup debut. “Everyone is together. We're all traveling the world. If we're struggling with certain things, we speak to folk around us. Everything is very familiar. You come out here to the PGA Tour, and it's also so unfamiliar. There's less chatting. There's less dinners. There's just less of that big family feel that you get on the European Tour. If you're sitting on your own, guys will come and join you. Out here [MacIntyre is in South Carolina for this week’s Myrtle Beach Classic], because you don't know many folk … you don't know them in that same kind of depth … they don't come to sit with you. So it does become a lonely place.
“It is what it is,” he continued. “You've got to get on with it. But there are a lot of other things. New golf courses. In Europe, I've played the majority of them now. Over here, they are pretty much all new. Then you've got the different grasses. Having not been brought up playing a lot of Bermuda, grainy grass, pitching and putting is just completely different. I can't just jump home and see the family and get that kind of vibe, being chilled out. But again, it's part of the journey, and I've just got to get on with it.”
Lightening the mood more than a bit, Kim was quick to express his enthusiasm for all things Scottish and, in particular, the Renaissance Club.
“Whenever I go there, I always seem to really enjoy the way we play golf,” he said, from Quail Hollow, where this week he is competing in the Wells Fargo Championship. “It's just very, very different. You have to pick one shot. You have to commit to it. That's the biggest thing I've realized at links golf. You just have to commit, and you have to be able to take some bunkers out of play. In the U.S., there's some shots where you're … I think I can push this. I think I can try to take on this bunker. But over there, you just can't. You have to take a club that you cannot go in the bunker because bunkers are definitely red hazards. For some reason every time I go there, I can just picture a lot of good things. I have a lot of good vibes over there. I just seem to enjoy myself.”
Still, for all that his current mental game contrasts almost completely with that of MacIntyre, Kim was understanding of his fellow pro’s present predicament.
“I do think it is harder to adapt from Scotland to the U.S. because in Scotland there's not much grain,” said the three-time PGA Tour winner. “At home you don't have shots where when you hit, your club gets stuck in the ground. And when you're reading putts, there's not much grain at all. Then, when you come to the U.S., there's so many different grasses. You've got bent. You've got ryegrass. You've got Bermuda. You've got zoysia. There's four different type of grasses, even more. When you're adapting to that instead of just one grass, it definitely is harder.
“The lifestyle here on the PGA Tour, is all business,” continued Kim, confirming MacIntyre’s analysis. “When I played on the Asian Tour or DP World Tour, there was a lot of camaraderie. People go out to dinner and stuff like that. But here, you have your own team. You're trying to compete out here. When I first came, I definitely saw a different type of golf. That’s what makes these guys so good because they are all so dedicated and focused to their craft. So I do really think that guys from the DP World Tour might play great there, but it is hard to adapt coming from there to the PGA Tour.”
News flash (3): Big fish in little pond beats little fish in big pond every time.
