Stretched across 275 acres of Charlotte, Turning Point is close to Lake Ontario and the Genesee River, which means there are plenty of opportunities for water recreation.

Spend the day on Lake Ontario’s sands or keep things active by biking, running, or hiking along the multi-use trail along the river.

The trail eventually crosses the water via a boardwalk bridge.

1. Chimney Bluffs

Just east from Rochester sits this magnificently rugged state park, untouched by the development strangling many other spots around the country.

Chimney Bluffs is a spectacular geological site, with the clay, chimney-like cliffs towering boldly above the sands.

There are four miles of hiking trails to explore, with the Bluff Trail leading you right to the edge of the cliffs, providing you with magnificent views out over Lake Ontario.

Swimming is not allowed in this area, due to safety concerns, but it is a fantastic spot from which to take in a jaw-droppingly beautiful sunset.

2. Niagara Falls

You can hardly visit this area without paying a visit to its most famous feature: the spectacular Niagara Falls.

At only an hour and a half drive away, Rochester is a great hopping off point for the falls.

Gallons and gallons of water pound down from this majestic natural phenomenon; pay a visit and feel the powerful energy of this location as the spray mists across your face.

You can also visit Goat Island, perched in between the two falls.

If you’re feeling adventurous, head over to the Canadian side, so you can see for yourself which side does it better.

3. Niagara Region

Situated along the great Lake Ontario shores, this city boasts a diverse population of over 200,000 , a rich history, and several universities/colleges ! Once renowned for its industrial might (Rochester was the home of big companies like Kodak and Xerox) and its significance in Underground Railroad and Black history , today, it thrives as a hub of innovation and cultural diversity. From its burgeoning brewery scene to the array of museums, we’ll uncover the hidden gems in store, cool places to visit, and fun things to do in Rochester!

I. Rochester’s Interesting History 

The city of Rochester was established in 1821 thanks to its status as a port in the St. Lawrence Seaway, meeting up with the Genesee River at Lake Ontario. It was originally known as Rochesterville until it was shortened in 1822. 

WIth the Erie Canal (1825) and the waterpower and railway links that were made (1839), Rochester was considered one of the boom towns of Western New York by the mid-1800s. WIth flour milling, wheat production, and clothing and shoe industries, Rochester was mass-producing in the 1860s to keep up with the American Civil War.

In the late 19th century, George Eastman, John Jacob Bausch, and Henry Lomb helped Rochester gain its lasting nickname, the ‘Photo City,’ by coming to Rochester to develop their photographic, optical, and precision equipment. 

With famous names like Margaret and Kate Fox, Frederick Douglass, and Susan B. Anthony, Rochester has been home to some of the greatest influencers in American History.

Artisan works gallery ★.

Artisan Works Gallery is a revamped historic factory building converted to an art museum with 500,000 items in its collection.  The Gallery created a system of self-funding that allows the museum to run without government funding. This is where a lot of Rochester’s local art lives.

Visit Artisan Works Gallery on weekends between 12 and 5 to immerse yourself in the creative world and find inspiration in your life. 

Browse the Rochester Public Market

When I say Rochester really embraces their history, I mean it. The Public Market has been on North Union Street since 1905. The Market runs on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday all year round, with Saturdays often boasting over 300 vendors offering local produce, global delicacies, prepared and packaged foods from all ethnicities, and so much more.

You could easily spend hours here browsing, shopping, and tasting the different offerings.  Explore some local businesses and experience foods you’ve never tasted before!

Letchworth State Park (Day Trip)★

Take a day trip to the Grand Canyon of the East , just a short drive south of Rochester. As the Genesee River cuts through a massive gorge, you can witness not one but three incredible waterfalls – some of the best waterfalls in the United States.

Stroll through the forests and enjoy nature on any of the 66 total miles of hiking trails in this beautiful landscape. There are trails to suit anyone and any activity, from horseback riding and biking to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Absolutely one of the best things to do and one of the best state parks in New York.

Mendon Ponds Park

Take a moment to enjoy nature and de-stress in the largest park in Monroe County, Mendon Ponds Park . Because of its unique geological history, this park was listed on the National Registry of Natural Landmarks in 1969.

As one of the unique places to visit in Rochester, Mendon Ponds offers trails, birdwatching, boating, cross-country skiing, fishing, 48 geocaches, horseback riding, kayaking and canoeing, playgrounds, and sports fields. It’s a great break from the city, and just a short drive from downtown.

George Eastman Museum ★

You’ll find one of the most historic Rochester attractions on the George Eastman Estate in downtown Rochester. The pioneer of personal photography and motion picture film, George Eastman is perhaps one of the most famous Rochester personalities. 

The George Eastman Museum was founded in 1947 as the world’s oldest photography museum and archives. Peruse the massive collection or catch a movie in the Dryden Theatre. There are also music recitals almost every Sunday afternoon. 

Park Avenue Entertainment District

As one of Rochester’s most historic districts, Park Avenue offers restaurants, cafes, breweries, shops, galleries, and more.

The Gate House

How about affordable, organic, and sustainable food in an amazing environment? The Gate House offers just that with its mouth-watering gourmet burgers and wood-fired pizza. They manage all this while powering their entire operation and restaurant solely on wind and solar power! Don’t miss Sunday brunch with mimosas and their famous Bloody Marys.

Go Kayaking on Irondequoit Bay

If you’re a fan of kayaking, take the quiet path from Irondequoit Creek to the Bay. Whether you shuttle to the Bay or go round-trip, this peaceful and quiet creek offers plenty of flora and fauna to see.

There aren’t strong currents, so it’s a great activity for the family or beginners who want to try out their skills. You can rent kayaks in Ellison Park for the whole family.

Lyric Theatre Company of Rochester

Located in an early 1900s church, the Rochester Lyric Opera found a home in Rochester for their performances and educational programs. With 700 seats in the auditorium, this building was designed for music, featuring stunning architecture and perfect acoustics.

ArtWalk Rochester

This might be one of the best things to do in Rochester, NY! ARTWalk is a permanent urban art trail connecting the arts centers and public spaces within the Neighborhood of the Arts .

Join up your visits to the George Eastman Museum and the Memorial Art Gallery and follow this interactive, outdoor museum with public art as part of practical things like benches and painted on the sidewalks. You can check out individual pieces, or walk the whole route with a downloadable map.

Geva Theatre Center

The corner the Geva Theatre Center now stands on has an important place in history as a gathering place for presidents, governors, and military personnel, as well as artists, celebrities, and musicians.

Since Geva purchased and revamped the building in the 1980s, they’ve presented around 336 plays and housed over 5,000 actors, directors, managers, and designers. Each seat is at most 50 feet from the stage, making it an intimate space to watch performances.

The theater supports multiple productions throughout the year. Right now, they’re offering one of my favorites: Rogers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella!

Susan B. Anthony House Museum

On 17 Madison Street sits the house of Susan B. Anthony , the legendary women’s rights leader. This is the home she lived in, the site of her arrest in 1872 after she voted, and the headquarters of the National American Woman Suffrage Association while she was President.

Experience the power of place at her home and the Susan B. Anthony Museum and learn about the impact she had on women’s and American history.

Walk the Erie Canalway Trail

Between Rochester and nearby Fairport, there’s an excellent stretch of the Erie Canalway Trail to explore. The 14-mile off-road trail is great for walkers and bikers, and passes through woodlands and streams, with great views of canal boats and the infrastructure of this famous man-made waterway.

Bike the entire trail in about an hour or take a leisurely stroll to one of the picturesque villages along the way, such as Pittsford or Fairport.

One of the Great Lake’s best natural sand beaches, it covers 39 acres and has a sandy waterfront with Charlotte Pier. Strong National Museum of Play

Whether you have kids or not, the Strong National Museum of Play is not only one of the fun things to do in Rochester but may top the list of best museums in Upstate New York. Both kids and adults love the museum exhibits, and the learning about the history of how life and our interests have changed over the centuries. You can even visit Sesame Street!

Rochester Museum and Science Center

This interactive museum appeals to all ages. Whether you like natural history, space, or local history, there are exhibits for you to get lost in. My favorite exhibit is the life story of Frederick Douglass and black lives in Rochester, the Underground Railroad, and the impact of slavery on the United States. 

The Little Theater

This little theater , designed in the style of Edgar Philips of Rochester and Frederick Pike of Buffalo, is on the National Register of Historic Places and a big part of the Little Cinema Movement .

This movement tried to appeal to audiences that preferred things outside of the realm of the larger commercial movie houses, such as silent films. Why not see a movie at an iconic theater of cinematic history?

High Falls Center & Interpretive Museum

One of the best places to visit in Rochester, and probably the best place to start your visit, is the High Falls Center . Not only can you learn some of the history of Rochester at the museum, but there’s a laser show and plenty of tours to take. 

It sits right at the center of what used to be Rochester’s and America’s flour milling industry. There’s even a fantastic footbridge for the perfect view of High Falls. 

Visit the Breweries of Rochester

Rochester started its first brewery in 1819 and boomed to over 50 breweries before the fall in the 1900s (9 remained). Craft breweries started to pop up in the 90s, and Rochester is now home to over 30 craft breweries. 

• Genesee Brewing Company (4.6/5): The oldest brewing company in Rochester and New York State, this brewery is named for the river it resides near. They stored the beer in the cold, dark caverns and gorges surrounding the river. 
• Roc Brewing Co. (4.5/5): Grab a flight of local beer in their tasting room downtown. This brewery tries to maintain that hometown feel while following the current trends in craft brewing. There’s something for everyone to try, no matter what you fancy. 
• R.G. Brewery and Five Sons Winery (4.7/5): I would say that this winery is among the best breweries in Upstate New York. Beyond their excellent location in Brockport, just outside of the city, their food, beer, and wine are a wonderful experience. I recommend the wine gelato!
• Rohrbach Brewing Co. on Railroad Street (4.7/5): Founded in 1991, this brewery has the honor of being Rochester’s first craft brewery. The beer hall serves the best wood-fired pizza in town. 

Play at the Dreamworks Rink

This indoor, year-round skating rink is a great place to go and play, especially if you need some indoor fun out of the rain or snow. The Genesee Valley Sports Complex offers ice skating, an outdoor pool, and a sports floor. Check out their open skate and adult-only skating times, and rent your skates right in the Dreamworks Rink. 

Tinker Nature Park

While you’ll have to leave your four-footed friends at home, the Tinker Nature Park in Henrietta is a great little park focused on nature. With some short trails and several museums and learning centers, you can spend the day outside and see the flora and fauna firsthand. You can even rent snowshoes and skis the explore the park in the winter.

Mount Hope Cemetery

While you usually wouldn’t think of a cemetery on a list of things to do in Rochester, Mount Hope Cemetery has a lot to offer. Beyond being one of the most impressive Victorian cemeteries in the country, it’s also the resting place of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass.

This stunning location will awe you in every way with the natural landscape and the sculptures scattered throughout the arboretum.  It might seem a little strange, but it is really worth a visit. 

Genesee Riverway Trail

Bike, run, or walk the scenic 9-mile trail that runs through 9 historic districts and landmarks, including the 1842 Erie Canal Aqueduct and the Lake Ontario Lighthouse. Along the course, you can access many of Rochester’s wonderful sites including three waterfalls, the gorge, eight bridges, and eleven parks (including some designed by Frederick Law Olmsted ).

Genesee Country Village & Museum

Witness history brought to life at the Genesee Country Village and Museum . Here, 19th-century American history and New York State history have been preserved.

The museum maintains a 19th-century village over 600 acres including a working farm, 68 historic buildings and an educational experience you can’t beat. Engage all five senses and explore history before your eyes.

Lamberton Conservatory

Within the beautiful Highland Park , you’ll find the Lamberton Conservatory . After the flour mills left Rochester, the city started a booming business in the plant and seed market. Highland Park and the Conservatory are symbolic of that moment in the past.

Spend a gray or rainy day inside the conservatory relaxing to the sound of running water while taking in all the colors and scents of flowers and tropical plants. This is an excellent place for photographers to practice their art in macro photos.

Ganondagan State Historic Site

This very special historic site is a must stop! The Ganondagan serves as a valuable resource for understanding local Native American history in the region through its exhibitions, beautiful cultural center, Seneca Bark Longhouse, nature trails, and much more.

Situated just 15 minutes between Rochester and Canandaigua, it’s easy to stop by here between your New York road trip adventures. 

I learned so much at the Ganondagan State Historic Site, things that should have been taught to us in schools as New Yorkers! You’ll learn about the significance of this location, formerly a vital center for the Seneca people and the Iroquois Confederacy. 

Today, it continues to be an invaluable site for archaeological research, offering insights into the Seneca’s rich heritage and daily life through artifacts and the reconstructed Seneca Bark Longhouse. 

As a hub for cultural preservation, Ganondagan is dedicated to educating visitors about the traditions, politics, and social structures of the Seneca and other Iroquois nations.

Spanning 569 acres of diverse landscapes, it also offers natural beauty through its trails and guided tours, alongside hosting numerous cultural and educational events to promote understanding and appreciation of local Native American history and culture.

Black Button Distilling

If you’re a fan of bourbon or gin, then this is the place for you. I was introduced to Black Button by accident, and their bourbon creme makes the best root beer floats. After my first encounter, I needed to see what more they had to offer.

Tour their distillery and visit their tasting room in a stunning brick building; you won’t be sorry! They even host cocktail classes and sell kits.

Explore Finger Lakes Wine Country

Relax and sip away at world-class wine in the Finger Lakes Wine Country . There are wine trails, breweries, cideries, and distilleries sprinkled all throughout the region. Summer or winter, the views and the people are spectacular, and so is the wine. 

Rochester City Ballet

Rochester City Ballet is the only professional ballet company in New York State outside New York City! It’s a great opportunity to see a live ballet performance outside of New York City or Saratoga (where there’s a troop in residency from the city).

Whether they’re performing classics like Sleeping Beauty or The Nutcracker or original works, it’s sure to be breathtaking.

The Strasenburgh Planetarium

While searching around for fun things to do, the Planetarium at the Rochester Museum and Science Center might catch your eye. Take an incredible journey across the universe during one of their shows. They even have an exhibition on how much Rochester has influenced space exploration! 

Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum

As the third oldest chapter in the National Railway Historical Society, the museum began in 1937, but really came to fruition in 1971 with the purchase of a depot on the Erie Lackawanna Railroad.

They’ve built a demonstration railroad with historic railroad equipment and offer the only real train rides in the city. Two miles of landmark rail connect the two museums by train.

This music hall caters to everyone, which features music from all cultures, including local, national, and international artists. Enjoy live music of all varieties. As they say, it’s live entertainment, “From the Weird Side of the Tracks”. With a full calendar of events, there might be something that piques your interest.

Rochester has been home to the Red Wings Baseball team since 1899, the oldest minor-league team in the history of professional sports! Why not get tickets for their next game and experience sports history at Frontier Field in downtown Rochester?

Annual Events in Rochester

• Rochester International Jazz Festival (runs June 23 to July 1): it’s one of the world’s leading jazz festivals held at the Kodak Hall Eastman Theatre. With an incredible lineup of fantastic jazz musicians, this would be a great time to visit Rochester.
• Lilac Festival is usually hosted during the first three weekends in May while the incredible lilac bushes are flowering. Walk around Highland Park and see the 1,200 lilac bushes in full bloom (they have over 500 varieties). You can also check out amusement rides and local merchants throughout the park. 
• Roc Holiday Village is Rochester’s winter festival, running Wednesdays through Sundays throughout December until Christmas. There’s a shopping village, ice skating, Santa, fire pits, restaurants, igloos, live music, and food trucks.

10 Great Day Trips to Take from Rochester, NY

Rochester is a beautiful city hugging Lake Ontario’s shoreline in upstate New York. Rochester is positioned in a spot where several locations are within a 2-3-hour drive and make for a wonderful day trip. I have 10 great day trip destinations for you from the Rochester area!

Hubby and I go to Rochester frequently. He has a doctor in one of the suburbs, and so we head out there once per month at a minimum. Last week we made a day of it in Pittsford for the Buffalo Bills training camp, went over for lunch to the Genesee Brew House, then took a ride down to his doctor in the suburb of Victor, and then I met some friends for dinner on the way home. I always mention to one of those friends that if I lived in Rochester, I’d be in the Finger Lakes every weekend – and I am only half kidding.

That got me to thinking: what are some good day trips from Rochester, New York?

Here’s my list of 10 Great Day Trips to Take from Rochester, NY. I’ve defined a day trip as one which can reasonably be driven to, the sights of the area enjoyed, and then returned home, all within a reasonable 10-14 hour day.

Buffalo, NY

Explore Buffalo’s waterfront with a visit to Canalside. Home to seasonal attractions, Canalside offers something new with each visit. While there, visit the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park, which offers tours of US naval ships and a submarine, as well as other military equipment. A walk along the waterfront is a great way to take in Buffalo’s sites.

The Buffalo Zoo is the country’s third-oldest zoo and showcases animals from around the globe. From animals native to New York to those on the endangered list, a visit to the zoo is both educational and inspirational. Test your science knowledge and skills at the Buffalo Museum of Science. With an exhibit that highlights the city from outer space, the museum is home to all types of attractions that appeal to people of all ages.

Since a lot of day trips to Buffalo happen in conjunction with a football or hockey game, I’d be remise in not mentioning that professional sports fans will enjoy a stadium tour of the Buffalo Bills’ home turf, as well as catching a game or watching the Buffalo Sabres hockey team.

Canandaigua, NY

Located at the top of Canandaigua Lake, this picturesque little town offers some great food (OMG! go to the Rheinblick German Restaurant on Main Street – it is fabulous!), historical buildings, lots of summer fests, and the Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion Historic Park.

Roseland Wake Park is a great place to take the family. There are beginner classes especially for children. If your family likes outdoors, why not get a New York State fishing license (you can print it immediately online) and spend the day fishing!

Chimney Bluffs State Park – Wolcott

Created by glaciers till the rock formations resembling chimneys at the state park are among the most unique landscape features seen along Lake Ontario. Visitors to Chimney Bluffs State Park in Wolcott, about an hour from Rochester, can view the formations up-close or from the lakeshore. In either case, the view is spectacular. Head off on one of the park’s trails during your visit and enjoy a day in nature as you explore among the tall trees and beautiful views. Bring a picnic basket and enjoy a meal while you explore Chimney Buffs State Park.

Corning, NY

Corning is home to outstanding museums and attractions on the southern edge of the Finger Lakes region.

The Corning Museum of Glass is home to the history and science of glass. Visit the galleries showcasing beautiful pieces of glass artwork. Some of the best glassblowers in the world will create art pieces while you watch during live presentations. During your visit, try your hand at glass blowing, as classes are offered daily.

Norman Rockwell continues to be considered one of the best folk artists in American history. The New York native created more than 320 illustrations for the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. While best-known for this work, Rockwell also created illustrations for the Boy Scouts of America’s magazine and other outlets. The museum’s exhibits include his illustrations and the studio he worked in, as well as other items, including his archives.

Known for its outstanding shops and boutiques, a visit to the Gaffer District is a must when visiting Corning. The five-block historical area is home to excellent restaurants and bars. I adore the Gaffer District – from the great restaurants to the glass works to the art galleries and shops, this area really has it all!

The Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes region, known for its outstanding vineyards and wineries, is about an hour southeast of Rochester. The perfect location for a day’s visit, you can take in culture, history, nature, and enjoy excellent food and wine during the trip.

With so many wineries and vineyards in the area, Finger Lakes is home to three wine trails. The Seneca Lake Wine Trail may be the best-known of the three. Founded in 1986, it’s the largest in New York. With a history of winemaking dating back to the mid-1800s, the region saw a resurgence with new vineyards in the 1970s. Today, wines produced from grapes grown in the Finger Lakes region are considered among the best in the world.

A drive around any of the lakes, including Seneca, Canandaigua and Cayuga, are among the prettiest drives you can take anywhere. Check out some of the trails along the way, waterfalls , and New York State Parks, as well as visiting the shops and boutiques in communities like Watkins Glen and Seneca Falls.

Niagara Falls, NY

Located less than a two-hour drive west of Rochester, Niagara Falls (New York and Ontario) provide a perfect getaway. Of course, with the world-famous Falls flowing into the Niagara River, you can enjoy the view from either side of the border, standing feet away on the American side with a walk through the Niagara State Park.

The Canadian side offers a great view of the Horseshoe Falls with a large observation area.

If you want to get a water-level view of Niagara Falls, take a tour about the Maid of the Mist (USA side), which takes poncho-wearing visitors as close as possible to the Falls. The mist from the Falls will greet you as the boat floats toward the basin of the horseshoe. Before revving its engines and heading back to the dock. If you truly want to get within a hands-reach, visit the Cave of the Winds. Wearing a poncho, you will ride the elevator down to a series of wooden stairs where you climb down Niagara Gorge, enjoying the spray of the falls while enjoying a close-up look at one of the wonders of the world.

While you are visiting the area, check out additional fun activities, such as the zipline to the Falls. Traveling about a mile across the falls more than 200 feet above the water, riders on the four ziplines reach a speed up to 40 mph (70 kph). If you are in the mood to speed on the river, enjoy a speed boat tour on the Niagara Gorge, speeding upriver as water flows overhead drenching you and your travel buddies.

Six Flags Darien Lake Theme Park – Darien Center

The region’s premier theme park, Six Flags Darien Lake is about an hour drive from Rochester, perfect for a day at the park. With rides for every member of the family – from thrill rides for teens and adults to child rides – you can easily plan to spend a day at the Darien Lake attraction.

For people who love pushing themselves to the limit, Six Flags is ready to accommodate. Roller coaster fans will enjoy riding the Boomerang. Taking riders on the ride of their lives, this roller coaster moves fast and in all directions. Immediately dropping 125 feet and completing three loops, then doing it again…backwards. The 90-second ride will flip you and send you in all directions. This is not a ride for the faint-hearted. The Boomerang is just one of a dozen thrill rides guaranteed to challenge you.

With nearly 20 family-style rides, Six Flags Darien Lake will allow for some quality family time on attractions like the Scrambler, Corn Popper, or the Giant Wheel. Take a ride together on the Grizzly Run, featuring a circular raft traveling along a tamed-down version of whitewater rafting. While it may not be a Class III rapid, you will get wet on the Grizzly Run.

Looking for a safer ride for the younger members of the group? Then, head over to rides such as Bucky’s Barrels, Critter Chase or the Darien Lake Railway children’s train.

Six Flags offers several family-oriented entertainment shows throughout your visit. Grab a family meal at any of the concession areas. During warmer weather, the park also has a water park featuring eight water attractions.

Syracuse, NY

Just down the road (well, the I-90) from Rochester, Syracuse is home to the Syracuse University Orange college programs, featuring great football and basketball games.

It is also home to excellent outdoor activities, such as Highland Forest, where you can enjoy a hike among some of the most attractive scenery in Upstate New York, as well as joining a horseback riding tour. Visit Rosamund Griffin Zoo and see more than 700 animals, with many available at indoor exhibits. History and architecture enthusiasts will enjoy self-guided tours of unique designs like the Niagara Mohawk Building (aka Niagara Hudson Building) and the Weighlock Building, which is home to the Erie Canal Museum.

Watertown, NY

A trip to the 1000 Islands area is full of history and fun. While in Watertown, which is about 2 ½ hours northeast of Rochester, visit the historic Burrville Cider Mill. Built in 1801, the mill is a perfect spot during the fall for apple cider and donuts. While in the mood to tour historical sites, the Jefferson County Historical Society is housed in a 19th-century mansion that once belonged to the Paddock family. Featuring family heirlooms and memorabilia, as well as exhibits from the Victorian era and other periods, this museum also includes a log cabin, one-room schoolhouse, and garden. The Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library includes rooms decorated in historical style while housing books and more. Tours are available upon request.

If you prefer a day of outdoor adventure, Watertown is a great spot to visit. With ziplines , whitewater rafting, and nature trails available, you can spend all day exploring without stepping foot indoors.

However, if the family seeks a slower mode of a day trip, visit the Thompson Park Zoo and Conservancy, a 32-acre zoo showcasing animals native to New York, such as elk, black bears, river otters, and bald eagles. Old McDonald’s Farm encourages people to get up close to more than 200 farm animals at the petting zoo. While there, take a hayride around the farm.

Watkins Glen, NY

Home to professional auto racing, Watkins Glen International Raceway hosts both NASCAR and Formula One-style competitions. The racetrack has played an integral role in auto racing for more than half a century. Visit the International Motor Racing Research Center to learn about the history of racing and the role Watkins Glen has played.

Watkins Glen State Park offers a beautiful nature experience as one of the best parks in the New York. During a two-mile hike, you’ll travel down 400 feet, taking in majestic views of waterfalls and cliffs. Named as one of the best parks in the country by USA Today readers, hiking trails take you over and under waterfalls as you discover amazing views of the gorge.

Take a cruise around Seneca Lake on a Captain Bill’s cruise ship. Founded in 1963, the tour company continues to be one of the Finger Lakes’ most popular lake cruises. Captain Bill’s offers daily tour cruises, as well as dinner and special occasion ventures.

As part of the Finger Lakes region, you will find great resteraunts and wineries in the area- And bakeries! We have visited some delicious bakeries while in Watkins Glen – as well as outstanding local shops and boutiques.

While Rochester offers its fair share of attractions, such as the George Eastman Museum (of Eastman-Kodak camera fame) and Seneca Park Zoo, sometimes you just need to get away and take a break from your area. In that case, Rochester is centrally located to offer some great day trip options, from Niagara Falls to the history of auto racing and areas for great wine. As you venture out for the day, have a great time.

I don’t believe I drive that fast, but I can be in the 1000 Islands in three hours. From Brockport, I can be in Clayton for breakfast by 9:30 am, shop, take boat tours, walk through 1000 Island Park, have a great dinner and be home by 10:30 at night.

UPDATE: One man killed in Houston County crash

NEAR BROWNSVILLE, Minn. (KTTC) – A La Crosse man is dead after a crash involving a motorcycle near Brownsville in Houston County.

The crash happened around 8:35 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 26. The Minnesota State Patrol released more information about the crash Thursday morning.

Cameron Sokolik, 23, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, was driving a Ducati motorcycle north on Highway 26 and a Ford Fusion driven by Kathleen Grangaard, 45, of Waukon, Iowa, was southbound when they collided.

Sokolik died in the crash. Grangaard was not hurt.

NEAR BROWNSVILLE, Minn. (KTTC) – First responders were on the scene of a fatal crash involving a motorcycle near Brownsville in Houston County.

It happened around 8:35 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 26.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a Ducati Motorcycle driven by a 23-year-old La Crosse, Wisconsin man was going north on Highway 26 and a Ford Fusion driven by a 45-year-old Waukon, Iowa woman was going south when they collided.

More details are expected to be released on this crash later this morning.

The 6 best things to do with kids in the D.C. area this weekend

Looking for something fun to do with kids in the D.C. area this weekend? Here are our top picks.

Flower Mart at Washington National Cathedral

You don’t have to be a gardener to enjoy Flower Mart, the largest annual fundraiser for Washington National Cathedral’s gardens and grounds. This spring tradition, dating back to 1939, includes free entertainment from musicians, dance troupes and choral groups; activities for children, including carnival rides and an antique carousel; treasure hunting at the White Elephant Tent; food stalls offering lobster rolls and funnel cakes; floral displays created by embassies in the cathedral’s nave; and a chance to climb to the top of the cathedral’s towers. The front lawn is set up as a Flower District with vendors selling plants, herbs, bonsai, orchids, cut blooms and flower arrangements. Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free entry, with charges for games, rides and the tower climb.

Star Wars Day celebrations

The unofficial Star Wars holiday of May Fourth brings events across the district — the largest being Star Wars Weekend at Barracks Row . It consists of two days of franchise-themed parties, drink and food specials, and entertainment from participating establishments, plus a Jedi lightsaber parade. Costumes are encouraged ( Friday and Saturday; free ). Also on Friday, AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center kicks off screenings of the original trilogy ( times vary, through May 9; $10-$13 ).

Additionally, recently renovated Stead Park , located on P Street NW between 16th and 17th streets, hosts its grand reopening party with a day of “activities that will help you become a Jedi.” Look for space-themed games and story times for kids, out-of-this-world temporary tattoos, lightsabers created by a balloon artist, live music, and food from local restaurants. ( Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free. )

Around the World Embassy Tours

Dozens of countries from Albania to Zambia host open houses during the annual Around the World Embassy Tour, one of those “only in Washington” events you’ll tell friends and relatives about. How often do you have the chance to tour the British ambassador’s residence and the embassy’s gardens, watch a K-pop performance at the Korean Cultural Center, sample rum at the Embassy of Guyana, listen to Indigenous music at the Australian Embassy or enjoy traditional cuisine at the Embassy of Thailand? It’s a busy day, so start planning now, and read our tips on how to make the most of the festivities. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free; some embassies may charge for food and drinks.

Running of the Chihuahuas at the Wharf

The Wharf’s quirky combination of the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo is back for the 12th year: The annual Running of the Chihuahuas involves more than 100 of these tiny dogs sprinting in groups of eight on a 60-foot “racetrack.” One Chihuahua eventually emerges as the fastest of the pack, winning $100 cash and swag during this bracket-style tournament. Only Chihuahuas can race, but dogs of all types can enter an all-breed dog costume contest, while human spectators enjoy the Pacifico Beer Garden, a DJ, a pet photo booth and an adoptable-dog parade. This event is very popular: Arrive early for the best views of the track, or watch on a giant video projection screen. Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. Free admission. All spots for racing Chihuahuas are filled .

Anacostia River Festival

The final event of the National Cherry Blossom Festival — no, really — fills Anacostia Park with music and activities. Entertainment comes from go-go titans Junkyard Band, R&B singer Adamare, the U.S. Navy Band and the Anacostia High School Band. Learn how to fish with the D.C. Department of Energy and Environment, play lawn games, browse art exhibitions, or volunteer to help clean the park and the river. The 11th Street Bridge Park sponsors a Southeast Market with local vendors including fashion by the Museum and beauty products from Black Bella Spa. Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. for main activities; market until 6 p.m. Free .

Build Day at the Hirshhorn Museum

Kids 12 and younger are invited to the Hirshhorn Plaza for a midday, hands-on exploration of building and design. Budding architects can tour a city design exhibition featuring artwork by DCPS elementary students, make LED sculptures, see student-made 3D-printed building reproductions from George Washington University’s Fab Lab, and construct 3D structures from blocks, bricks and more at maker stations. Stroller parking will be available in the lobby and lower level. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free.
