Here’s what you need to know about Rocky Mountaineer train journeys.

For the traveler who understands that getting to their destination can be half the fun, the Rocky Mountaineer train makes for an ideal vacation. While the company’s highly curated itineraries take passengers to several incredible destinations across the Canadian Rockies and the American Southwest, the Rocky Mountaineer is more than just a mode of transportation or a scenic rail route. These multi-day rail journeys are all about delivering a luxury experience both on and off the train — something I discovered when I embarked on the route between Colorado and Utah .

Between the beautiful landscapes rolling by outside the panoramic windows, the animated storytelling of the onboard hosts, and the delicious meals, long days on the Rocky Mountaineer seem to fly by. Here’s everything you need to know about this unique North American train experience.

Rocky Mountaineer Routes

Rocky Mountaineer offers four distinct routes, ranging from two to three days. For travelers having trouble choosing just one itinerary, there’s also the option to book a circle journey that combines two routes for a four or five-day adventure. Here are the Rocky Mountaineer routes you can choose from:

First Passage to the West

This two-day journey starts in Vancouver, Canada. Arrive a few days early to explore the many things to do in this beautiful coastal city before hopping on the Rocky Mountaineer. The first day onboard will start early as the train makes its way through Fraser Valley, with views of majestic mountains, green forests, and raging rivers. After a full day on the train, you’ll arrive in the riverfront town of Kamloops. Stretch your legs with a stroll by the river, explore the art galleries and museums, or participate in one of many outdoor activities. On day two, the train will continue its journey east, passing by mountains and an idyllic lake. The iconic views of Castle Mountain will be the highlight of this day before the train reaches its final destination in Banff. Passengers disembark in Banff and the adventure can easily continue from there with visits to Banff National Park, including the postcard-ready Lake Louise.

Journey Through the Clouds

This two-day itinerary starts with a similar route as the train takes off from Vancouver and stops in Kamloops for the night. On day two, however, the train will head northeast to Jasper. The natural beauty along this route is plentiful, with passengers catching views of the Blue River, Pyramid Falls, and Mount Robson, the tallest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Passengers disembark in the charming mountain town of Jasper, which offers easy access to Jasper National Park.

Rainforest to Gold Rush

Rocky Mountaineer’s only three-day itinerary takes passengers on a different, but equally picturesque, route from Vancouver to Jasper. Day one starts with the train making its way around Horseshoe Bay and the beautiful fjords of Howe Sound before trading the water-filled vistas for the Coast Mountains. The day ends with an overnight stay in Whistler, where you’ll definitely want to take a ride on the Peak-2-Peak gondola for the best views of this mountainous region. On day two, passengers will see a totally different type of Canadian landscape as the train passes through more arid scenery, including canyons where prospectors once searched for gold, and then stops for the night in the small city of Quesnel. Day three brings passengers to the final stop in Jasper after another full day aboard the train, admiring the area’s mountains, lakes, and rivers.

Rockies to the Red Rocks

Rocky Mountaineer debuted its first U.S. route in the fall of 2021, taking passengers between Denver, Colorado and Moab, Utah with an overnight stop in Glenwood Springs, Colorado . When I embarked on this historic new route, I spent a few days enjoying the sights in Denver before boarding the Rocky Mountaineer. On day one, we left the city skyline behind and immersed ourselves in the Colorado Rockies, crossing the Continental Divide and cutting through the impressive 6.3-mile Moffat Tunnel. By dusk, we were in Glenwood Springs, where a visit to the world's largest mineral hot spring pool is a must. The next day, we continued our journey west, trading the Rockies for the unique red rocks of the Southwest, including incredible views of Mount Garfield and Ruby Canyon. By mid-day, we were in Moab, the perfect home base for exploring Arches and Canyonlands national parks.

Rocky Mountaineer Classes of Service

Once you’ve decided on your route, it’s time to choose which level of service you’d like on board. For all guests, the Rocky Mountaineer experience includes a comfy seat with plenty of legroom, picture-perfect views outside the expansive windows, beverages and meals, and top-notch entertainment from the hosts who regale guests with their excellent storytelling about the region you’re traveling through.

The daily schedule for each itinerary varies, but the train only travels during daylight hours to ensure that passengers don’t miss any inch of the jaw-dropping landscape. The Rocky Mountaineer experience includes hotel stays in the towns and cities where the train stops for the night with a variety of options for different budgets. There’s plenty of time to enjoy the destinations at each stop, and it’s highly recommended that guests extend their stay before and after the journey. Rocky Mountaineer even offers full vacation packages that include excursions and trip extensions.

While the Rocky Mountaineer certainly provides a top-notch experience for all guests, there are key differences worth noting as you choose which onboard service level is right for you.

GoldLeaf is the top-tier service level that Rocky Mountaineer offers, and it’s easy to tell apart from SilverLeaf because the coach has two levels. On the first floor, guests will find a dining room with large panoramic windows that allow them to take in the views while enjoying meals prepared onboard by the chef. There’s also a large outdoor platform so passengers can admire the scenery and a fresh breeze. Passengers will spend most of their time in the comfort of their assigned seats on the second floor, where dome-shaped windows allow for nearly unobstructed views.

The SilverLeaf coach is only one floor, so guests will enjoy their meals (prepared before departure and warmed up onboard) from comfortable seats, while also admiring the landscapes outside the large panoramic windows. For passengers in this coach, there is a small outdoor viewing area, where one to two people at a time can stand and peek outside an open window.

“When attempting to help prospective guests decide between SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf, I try and paint a picture of two great — but different — levels of service,” said Danny Becker, senior manager of sales development for Rocky Mountaineer. “I describe our SilverLeaf experience as a single-level railcar with beautiful large picture windows, great food and storytelling, and ample room between the seats. When describing our GoldLeaf experience, I try to present an image of true luxury with plush leather heated seats, a fully domed railcar with maximum viewing ability, an additional onboard host for enhanced service and more frequent storytelling, and made-to-order cuisine with world-class presentation and taste.”

“You really can’t go wrong whether you choose SilverLeaf or GoldLeaf Service, both are high-quality, all-inclusive levels of service,” Becker added.

SilverLeaf Plus

Because the Rockies to Red Rocks route passes through several tunnels, the usual two-level GoldLeaf coach is unavailable on this trip. Passengers looking for a more elevated experience can opt for SilverLeaf Plus instead. Like the SilverLeaf service, they’ll enjoy meals at their assigned seats while the stunning vistas roll by outside of large windows. They’ll also have access to a small, standing-only viewing area with an open window, plus a separate lounge car, where they can relax between meals and grab a drink at the bar.

We all know that everything changed as a result of the pandemic. Rocky Mountaineer—the luxury train that takes thousands of people across the Canadian Rockies each year—had to suspend the entire season. But Rocky Mountaineer is back, with luxury train journeys starting in Canada on July 5, 2021, followed by the launch of the new US route in August 2021. Come step onboard Rocky Mountaineer for unforgettable luxury train travel in the Rocky Mountains.

Rocky Mountaineer Survives the Pandemic

I have had the privilege of taking Rocky Mountaineer out of Vancouver into the Canadian Rockies on three life-changing journeys. These are truly remarkable trips, each filled with incredible wow moments . Because I had gotten to know the people who play such a vital role in making guests feel welcome —from the moment you begin planning your trip until the last moment when you head home—I kept hoping the luxury train would survive.

Throughout the season, hosts serve more than 4,000 cases of wine, helping create a jovial onboard atmosphere. Photo courtesy Rocky Mountaineer

Not only did Rocky Mountaineer survive, but it is also back with its breathtaking routes in Western Canada and a new route that takes guests into what I believe is the most beautiful part of the US—my home in the Colorado Rockies. Rocky Mountaineer is ready to take you on the trip of a lifetime.

Canadian Journeys on Rocky Mountaineer

In previous articles, I answer some of the questions many people have about Rocky Mountaineer—no, you don’t sleep on the train; and yes, you really do get to enjoy gourmet food .

It is no small feat to serve up such world-class meals on a moving train. Lunch service is delightful in the GoldLeaf Service dining room. Photo courtesy Rocky Mountaineer

Because of the travel restrictions still in place in many countries, Rocky Mountaineer encourages Canadian citizens to jump on board, and experience luxury train travel this summer in their own backyards.

There are several key journeys, and you can customize each one to fit your schedule and your budget. I have experienced two of the routes: First Passage to the West , which runs from Vancouver to Banff/Lake Louise via Kamloops, and Journey Through the Clouds , which runs from Vancouver to Jasper via Kamloops. Both are also available east to west, ending your journey in Vancouver.

There is also the Rainforest to Gold Rush route, which runs from Vancouver to Jasper via Whistler and Quesnel. You can also combine routes, add in excursions and escapes. For example, I’ve enjoyed some fabulous spa visits , hiking at Moraine Lake, riding the Banff Gondola, and more.

I traveled each time in GoldLeaf Service , which features a bi-level glass dome coach, luxury seats, and eating in the dining room for breakfast and lunch.

Specials to Inspire Canadians to Travel

Rocky Mountaineer knows it has been a tough year for everyone, and Canadians continue to face challenges at the border. There’s never been a better time to explore Western Canada . There are several promotions exclusively for Canadians to discover what is in their own backyard:

 • Rocky Mountaineer partnered with Fairmont Hotels to offer savings of up to $2,900 per couple on packages that pair the train with overnight stays in Fairmont properties. I have stayed at Fairmont properties in Vancouver, Banff, and Jasper and each one offered something to make the stays memorable.
 • Alberta and British Columbia residents can travel on Rocky Mountaineer this year and receive a voucher to take another luxury train journey within the next five years.
 • All Canadian residents save up to $1,400 per couple on vacation packages of five days or more.

Luxury Train Travel in the Colorado Rockies

I grew up on the Western Slope of Colorado, with the breathtaking beauty of the Colorado Rockies in my backyard. Although I no longer live there, I still think of it as home and enjoy visiting family whenever possible. There is nothing quite so amazing as summer in the Rockies. This year, you can experience the Colorado Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer by booking the Rockies to the Red Rocks journey .

Railroads played such a huge part in the history of this area, that it makes me smile to think of luxury train travel in the area. The journeys go from Moab, Utah to Denver, Colorado . Moab, with its beautiful red rocks and surrounding Mighty 5 US National Parks is an ideal place to play before you board the train. The first stop along the way is Glenwood Springs, a beautiful mountain town with a famous hot spring. You continue your journey on to Denver the second day and can extend your stay to explore the Mile High City from there.

Rocky Mountaineer also lets you begin your luxury train journey in Denver, Las Vegas, or Salt Lake City as part of available packages. If you prefer a longer experience, you can book a roundtrip and see the mountains and abundant wildlife at different times of the day.

Rockies to the Red Rocks offers SilverLeaf Service in a single-level domed coach to accommodate the many tunnels in the Colorado Rockies.

You can book SilverLeaf Plus, which includes an elevated dining service, access to the lounge car and outdoor viewing area, as well as signature cocktails at your seat or in the new lounge.

Health and Safety with Rocky Mountaineer

Rocky Mountaineer has always been extremely concerned about the happiness and welfare of its guests. Taking that to the next level has been part of the relaunch following COVID-19. Rocky Mountaineer has gone out of its way to make accommodations so that every guest and team member feels safe.

Some of the safety measures in place include:

 • All guests must undergo health screening and a rapid COVID-19 test before starting the journey.
 • All trains have high-end air filtration systems that remove 99.9% of airborne viruses and bacteria and continuously circulate fresh air.
 • There is more space between travel groups and there are glass barriers between tables in the dining room.
 • Train interiors receive thorough sanitization using an electrostatic disinfectant sprayer. Every train seat and tray table are sanitized prior to each travel day. High-touch areas are sanitized throughout the journey. Hand sanitizer is available in each coach.
 • As much as possible, passengers travel with the same group on their motorcoach transfers as in the rail car.
 • Groups traveling together are limited to six people and distance is maintained between different groups. Physical distancing is not required on the US route.

Other guidelines are available on Rocky Mountaineer’s website. Conditions may change as the pandemic situation changes. As of the July 5 launch, guests and team members must wear a face covering at all times on and off the train, while boarding and detraining, and on motorcoach transfers. You will be able to remove your mask while eating and drinking.

How to Book Your Rocky Mountaineer Journey

Never has there been a better time for luxury train travel. Rocky Mountaineer has been one of the best travel experiences ever for me. I’m never disappointed and always feel welcome by the hosts. I truly have so many amazing moments to remember from each of my trips. This is such a great way to book a vacation and explore what is in your own backyard—in a way you just can’t do on a road trip.

Earlier this year, I was the eager guest of Rocky Mountaineer, one of the World’s greatest railway journeys. I was on board their route from Vancouver to Banff in the Canadian Rockies. There are many different train routes to choose from, but I am told this one was a fairly typical ‘first train’ itinerary experience.

A train ride across Canada, i s it right for you? The answer for me: YES!

Great Railway Journeys

Are great railway journeys romantic.

In the travel world, train rides are romanticized. Here are a few examples:

“There’s pretty much nothing more romantic than moon glow.” – Travel+Leisure

“1 in 10 people say they have fallen in love on a train and 37% describe train travel as synonymous as falling in love.” – According to a UK study by East Coast Trains, MSN Travel

Railway Journeys Across The World

Are you are thinking of taking one of the great railway journeys of the world . The Canadian Rockies are certainly one that is on many traveler’s bucket lists. You may be wondering if a train ride across Canada is right for you. And is it really that romantic? When you strip away all hype, the decision to take a train ride for your vacation is a big one. This is especially true when you have limited time off from work and want to spend your hard-earned money appropriately. I believe that this decision can be made by taking out the emotions of the limelight (romance included) and make your choice based on what your personal vacation preferences are.

Here is my experience on the Rocky Mountaineer train ride across Canada; Great railway journeys don’t get better than this. I hope this helps you decide if a train ride is right for you, your spouse, and/or your family.

Great Railway Journeys

Railway Journeys Food, Scenery, And Service

Getting to know what you want and like out of a vacation:.

Savory food, outstanding service, and stunning scenery coupled with storytelling and comfort are much more important than partying in bars or a vacation filled with too much physical activity. Don’t get me wrong, I love adventure, but sometimes it is just nice to sit and be catered to for a while. Not all my journeys are like this, but I certainly don’t mind being catered to upon occasion. I think my preference of taking it easy aligns well with a Rocky Mountaineer train ride.

Some questions to ask yourself before you make your decision : What are your preferences for your vacation? What is your vacation style? What type of vacation is important to you and your family to experience?

Great Railway Journeys

What happens on great railway journeys?

 • Train Rides Move at a Slower Pace

The idea of a slower pace shouldn’t make you think that train rides are boring – they are far from it – it is definitely a more relaxing way of seeing the Rocky Mountains than the way our ancestors viewed it. The train itself can go up to 60 MPH, but as you glide along the tracks, you will start to feel that time is standing still.

The scenery engulfs you and the pace starts to slow you down. It is in these moments that you can reflect on your life’s journey. You can also choose to sit in your seat, sleep or talk to your traveling companion or other train riders.

Great Railway Journeys

 • Slow Can Feel Pretty Fast

If you choose, you can also get a boost of fresh air by going out on the outdoor vestibule, where it will seem nothing like a slow pace at all Before you know it the wind is whipping through your hair as the cold breeze touches your cheeks. This area, not surprisingly, can get a bit crowded when the train conductor slows down the train in certain areas to get an especially good glimpse at the stunning scenery.

This is also a great place to take photographs on the train since they are hard to get inside the dome . Once off the train, there are plenty of adventurous things to do out in the wild, if you need them.

Great Railway Journeys

 • Learning to Relax in this Hectic World

I enjoyed days of gazing out the window with my fine quality cocktails and sconce. I would be searching for wild animal sightings or seeing the next scenic vista on the horizon. Of course, there were moments where I was able to doze off, but that is the enjoyment of having time for your vacation (and a big, comfy seat). The slower means of train travel is relaxing and enable you to avoid the hassles of TSA security checks and airports. It actually allows you to relax on your vacation.

 • Train Trips Attract All-Age Demographics of People

On the train that I was on, we had a plethora of age ranges on the train. Now I know most people think that it attracts the older demographic, but I am here to tell you that I saw kids as young as age 10 on family vacations with their parents and grandparents, as well as honeymooners, mid-range and boomer couples. So don’t think it is not right for every age category and it is especially great for multi-generational trips. Sometimes it is hard to find a vacation that can fit everyone in the family.

 • Learning the History of the Region

But don’t forget, there is also compelling storytelling from the guides, the sightings, and the history of the area. All of it is the ‘take it or leave it’ type of conversation without any pressure for you to join in, listen, or doze-off. It is completely up to you what you do on your vacation. I think train travel is as much about the journey as it is about the destination.

Questions to ask yourself: What types of personalities do you and your family have when you are on vacation? Loud and boisterous or more subdued? Are you able to entertain yourself or do you get bored easily? Do you need a lot of activity or do you enjoy a balance that provides for quiet time?

Great Railway Journeys

Railway Journeys is Casual Luxury

 • Train travel is Casual Luxury

There are no formal nights on this train, unlike many cruises, so nothing extra to pack for that. The dress code is simple, you may dress how you like and feel the most comfortable. Bring a sweater or jacket in case you get cold on the train, but other than that, it is easy to pack for this type of vacation. Don’t think for a second that just because you are not all dressed up though that your service will be lacking. That could not be further from the truth.

Questions to ask yourself : Do you like dressing up on your vacations or do you prefer to keep it casual?

 • Socialization during your vacation

You will be on a train with a multitude of people that you don’t know, plus your traveling partner or your family if you choose. There is usually a bit of camaraderie with a group that travels together over a period of time. You can participate as much or as little as you choose. As mentioned before, there are guides onboard that are there to enhance your experience by way of history storytelling and pointing out sightings along the way.

Questions to ask yourself: Do you like time spent with a group? Do you prefer time alone or not being with people that you don’t know? Does the information provided by the storytellers enhance your experience or do you prefer to put on a headset and listen to music as you gaze out the windows? Do you prefer to travel alone or with a small group of family/or friends?

Great Railway Journeys

What is included in great railway journeys?

 • Rocky Mountaineer Train Rides are All-Inclusive

From the moment you arrive at your hotel, Rocky Mountaineer is there to take care of you. From hotel pick up to luggage that magically appears in your room at the next stop, the service is impeccable and is included in the price you pay. That is a blessing. Unlike some ocean cruise vacations; the price you pay at the beginning is not exactly the same as the price you pay when you are finished. Rocky Mountaineer is not like that. You know what you are getting for your money upfront. Depending on which service level you choose, Red or Gold Leaf, you will know exactly what is included if you read through the materials or go on their website.

What level of service do you need on a vacation?

 • Special Note about the Gold Leaf Service on Rocky Mountaineer

Gold Leaf Service is Rocky Mountaineer’s premium service and they do not skimp. This goes without saying, but breakfast, brunch, lunch are all included in the price of your package along with complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks. The Gold Leaf service also includes premium liquors. With Gold Leaf service, you will get what you pay for, quality and quantity.

The Gold Leaf service pricing represents a ‘value luxury’ experience, adding in a lot of the extras into the purchasing price. Of course, airfare from your home city to your city of departure is not included, as well as gratuities you may offer the staff.

Questions to ask yourself about how you spend your money while on vacation: Do you want a ‘value luxury’ vacation, with everything included, or do you prefer to pay as you go, making those decisions as the trip goes by? Are the extras offered on great railway journeys the type of things that you enjoy as part of your vacation experiences?

Canadian Railway Journeys Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts : Do great railway journeys interest you? Are you interested in going on a train trip across Canada? Does it fit your lifestyle and budget?

If the answer to this last set of questions is yes, then Rocky Mountaineer is right for you, just like it was right for me.

As for the train itself, Portillo likens it to a cruise ship. “It’s not really for transport, it’s for enjoyment, so there’s luxury on board: very high standards of service, beautiful food, lots of good wines, organised excursions.”

Portillo begins his journey in Vancouver, which is wedged between forested mountains and the sea on British Columbia’s west coast, and finishes in Canada’s oil capital, Calgary – which is famous for its enormous annual rodeo. The Rocky Mountaineer runs as far as Banff – a resort hemmed in by looming, snow-sprinkled peaks – on tracks that traverse the great Continental Divide of the Americas and played a key part in the country’s history.

“The line was vitally important to the unification of Canada,” Portillo explains. “British Columbia was only lured into the Canadian confederation by the promise of a railway. Before there was a railway, British Columbia in the west was weeks of travel away from Toronto and Ontario in the east. And so British Columbia looked like it was destined to link up to the western states of the United States, which of course the British didn’t want. The railway is what enabled Canada to be unified east to west.

“It was, of course, an extraordinarily difficult engineering feat. They tried to build it extremely quickly because they needed the revenue from opening the line to finance it. Thousands of people worked on the railway at any one time and many of them succumbed to accidents and cholera and all the other hazards of the day. Human life was considered rather cheap in those days. So when you’re on the train, you’re not only thinking about the engineering feat, you’re also thinking about the political importance.”

The line was constructed in just five years in the 1880s, allowing easy access to untouched summits that soon attracted British and American alpinists. In 1896, a fatal climbing accident led the Canadian Pacific Railway to start hiring Swiss mountain guides. They continued to do so for the next 50 years and there were no more deaths.

In Banff, Portillo meets a Swiss guide, who explains the allure for mountaineers from the Alps. “It’s interesting because we might think Switzerland is very beautiful and very remote, but this Swiss guide says that he left Switzerland because he regards it as very overcrowded and populated. It was always the Swiss habit to build villages and towns in the mountains, but there never were populations in the mountains in Canada. Indigenous people – First Nations people – moved through the mountains but they didn’t live in them, and therefore the greatest wildernesses to be found, possibly on Earth, are around Banff.

“Banff is a highly developed resort, but the guide told me that if I went walking with him for a few hours, I would be in pristine territory: places where hardly any human being ever sets foot, even today. It’s an extraordinary opportunity for people who really are bold and know what they’re doing.”

As for Portillo, he describes himself as “a fairly urban creature”; he’s not averse to a good walk but thinks camping is “going a bit far”. And that, of course, is the appeal of the Rocky Mountaineer: you can experience the wilds of Canada in comfort. “The train goes where nothing else goes. For most of the time, you don’t set eyes on a building or a road, so you are enjoying pristine nature.”

Today, the 110-mile stretch can be traveled in vintage cars via two excursions. On the journey, passengers take in a panorama of mountains, glaciers, gorges and waterfalls.

The two-and-a-half-hour Summit Excursion retraces the original route to the White Pass Summit, 3,000 feet (914m) above sea level. It's scheduled to run between April and October and tickets are already available to book. The eight-hour Bennett Scenic Journey between Skagway, Alaska, and Carcross, Yukon in Canada travels along the same route taken by gold prospectors and is currently scheduled to go ahead from May – check the website for the latest information.

As the name suggests, this breathtaking train journey leads its passengers through the mighty Denali National Park. The Alaska Railroad's flagship train, Denali Star embarks on a 12-hour ride between Anchorage and Fairbanks via Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali. Along the 365-mile (587km) journey, the train rushes past rivers and mountains and offers expansive panoramas of Hurricane Gulch from the top of a 296-foot (90.2m) bridge.

One of the most leisurely ways to explore the area’s celebrated wineries, the Napa Valley Wine Train is a classic. It runs on a 36-mile (58km) loop from Downton Napa to charming St Helena on an original 1864 rail line and has a range of packages on offer, from half-a-day winery tours with tastings to lavish on-board dining experiences and special events, like the Murder Mystery dinner theater option.

Plan An Affordable Trip Itinerary On The Rocky Mountaineer

The Canadian Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury train offering awe-inspiring views, but for some VIA Rail is the option that meets the budget.

 • The Rocky Mountaineer is a luxury Canadian train for sightseeing, but can be expensive.
 • Passengers can save by checking for special promotions.
 • VIA Rail offers a much cheaper alternative with fares starting from CAD 82, but lacks luxury amenities.

The Rocky Mountaineer is a Canadian icon . It is a Canadian rail-tour company operating out of Vancouver offering luxury scenic trains in British Columbia and Alberta as well as a route in Colorado and Utah. The Mountaineer is considerd the most luxurious train in the USA and the price tends to reflect that.

Passengers on the Canadian Rocky Mountaineer travel in luxury and style in glass-domed trains . But these are outside of the budget of most folks. Fortunately, there are ways to save money on the Rocky Mountaineer and get the complete experience.

Canada's Rocky Mountaineer & What It Offers

The rocky mountaineer is a luxury canadian tourist train with packages and trains designed for sightseeing.

The Rocky Mountaineer operates two types of wagons designed for comfort and for sightseeing called the SilverLeaf and the GoldLeaf. The Goldleaf wagons are double-deck panorama wagons with bi-level dome coaches and wrap-over windows on the top level.

The SilverLeaf wagons are single-deck dome coaches (rebuilt from RedLeaf coaches). The Rocky Mountaineer does not have sleeper accommodation; trains travel by daylight and accommodation is in hotels.

Rocky Mountaineer Canadian Routes:

 • First Passage To The West: Vancouver to Banff (overnight stop in Kamloops and intermediate stop in Lake Louise)
 • Rainforest To Gold Rush: North Vancouver to Jasper (overnight stops in Whistler and Quesnel)
 • Journey Through The Clouds: Vancouver to Jasper (overnight stop in Kamloops)

All of these journeys are expensive, but there are ways to save money. For example, passengers can save up to CAD 1,400 (or USD 1,040) per couple by getting deals on the Rock Mountaineer promotions page .

The Oldest Scenic Amtrak Route In America Is Still In Operation Today

Example classic 2-day rocky mountaineer vancouver to jasper, rocky mountaineer packages start at usd 1720 - 2,782 per guest.

Rocky Mountaineer fares are bundled with accommodation, meals, and sometimes excursions. The Rocky Mountaineer offers a range of packages ranging from one-night to 10-night packages. The fairly typical 2-day rail Vancouver to Jasper package starts at USD 1720 - 2,782 per guest.

2-Day Rocky Mountaineer Vancouver to Jasper

 • Cost: From USD 1720 - 2,782 per guest
 • Destinations: Vancouver, Kamloops, Jasper
 • Duration: 2 Days / 1 Night
 • Meals Included: 2 Breakfasts, 2 Lunches
 • Accommodation: One hotel in Kamloops

This train travels only in the daylight so that passengers can enjoy the stunning views of the Canadian West and Canadian Rockies.

On the first day, the train departs Vancouver in the morning winding its way through the dazzling beauty of the British Columbia interior to Kamloops. There, passengers disembark for the night, retiring to their hotel accommodation in Kamloops. The second day continues through the Canadian Rockies into the province of Alberta to Jasper.

10 Scenic Amtrak Trains, Ranked By Visitor Reviews

Take the long-distance train via rail, enjoy the same route as the rocky mountaineer for as little as usd 128 with via rail.

VIA Rail is Canada's national long-distance intercity passenger rail service (the Canadian counterpart to America's Amtrak). VIA Rail operates in eight Canadian provinces and operates the longest rail service in Canada (Vancouver to Toronto).

Unlike the rolling stock offered by the Rocky Mountaineer, VIA Rail is optimized for long-distance and economy.

VIA Rail operates trains from Vancouver to Jasper via Kamloops and from Prince Rupert on the British Columbia coast near Alaska through Prince George in the middle of British Columbia to Jasper. It is better to take the VIA Rail westbound from Jasper to Kamloops as the train runs in the daylight, departing Jasper at 9:30 am and arriving at Kamloops at 6:30 pm.

It is much cheaper to take this passenger train than the touristic Rocky Mountaineer. VIA Rail offers fares from Vancouver to Kamloops starting from CAD 82 or around USD 61. Passengers can choose to disembark at Kamloops and Kayak.com lists plenty of accommodation options below USD 100 per night and starting from as low as USD 52.

Vancouver to Kamloops:

 • Duration: 9 Hours, 17 minutes
 • Cost: From CAD 82 (approx. USD 61) Economy Class
 • Schedule: Depart Vancouver at 3:00 pm; arrive in Kamloops at 0:17 am
 • Hotel: From USD 60 per night

Vancouver to Jasper (via Kamloops):

 • Duration: 19 Hours
 • Cost: Economy Class From CAD 172 (approx USD 128) / Sleeper Plus Class From CAD 558 (approx. USD 414)
 • Schedule: Depart Vancouver at 3:00 pm; arrive in Jasper at 11:00 am

While much cheaper, VIA Rail does not offer the same tourist benefits as the Rocky Mountaineer. The trains do not have domed windows and some of the trains run at night (when the Rockies will not be visible).

Across the southern border, the American counterpart train is the venerable Amtrak Empire Builder running from Chicago north across the United States to Seattle.

How to make holidays last longer – and have more meaning

At one point or another, the global pandemic forced almost everyone to slow down and consider something profound: climate change, social activism, human connection. Amid closed borders and cancelled flights, travel, in its scarcity, also took on a more meaningful dimension. Vacations became hypothetical, and therefore imbued with new value: if someone could only take one trip, what would they do?

Rethinking why and how one travels is a hallmark of the slow travel movement, which, unsurprisingly, emerged stronger from the pandemic. “I have the privilege of sharing some of the most incredible views in the world with our guests,” says Wendy McMichael, a Senior Onboard Manager at Rocky Mountaineer, a luxury train service from Western Canada running four slow routes across North America; three through sprawling nature reserves in the Canadian Rockies, and another that trundles past the majestic red hoodoos of the Moab desert straddling Utah and Colorado. “It’s [been] very special to witness people who are seeing these places for the first time.”

great rail journeys rocky mountaineer

Slow travel grew out of the slow food movement, which promotes local, artisanal and sustainable food sources. By the same token, slow travel begets a more mindful and conscientious approach: it’s about how one travels as well as where they travel; not just about new sights, but about new ways of seeing. “It’s a mindset more than any one mode of transportation,” says Dan Kieran, the Author of The Idle Traveller: The Art of Slow Travel . “It’s thinking in terms of depth rather than time and making space for things to happen spontaneously.

With the pandemic firmly in the past, time has become a luxury again and the idea of drawing vacations out for as long as possible and savouring each moment has a renewed appeal. Slow, gentle itineraries that allow for full immersion in one’s surroundings are an ideal way to start travelling slower – think taking a day or two out of an itinerary to walk in nature, cycle through the countryside or take a long-distance rail journey. “It’s where my mind goes between point A and point B that often excites me more than my destination,” says Kieran. “In that sense, train journeys are a great way to start experiencing slow travel. They also allow you to have conversations with strangers, which is all part of the fun and one of the ways spontaneous things can happen too.”

Rocky Mountaineer is a prime example of how a gentle pace and immersion in one’s surroundings can lead to meaningful memories; point A and point B are not the only reason why guests take these routes. Over two or three days, the trains traverse through some of the most spectacular scenery in the world – past alpine mountains, shimmering lakes and boreal wildlife – before pulling into their end destinations, where a sense of exploration can continue at one’s own pace. While the coaches are designed for guest comfort, the main attraction is what can be seen outside the window. “It’s the original TV screen,” Kieran says of the view from a train. “Train journeys really allow you to both let your mind wander and see new things.”

great rail journeys rocky mountaineer

Much like the slow food movement, it’s a touch of local flair that brings a slow travel experience together: onboard Rocky Mountaineer journeys, for example, the food and wine are locally-sourced and regionally-inspired wherever possible, and, over microphones, the onboard hosts surface stories about the scenery and communities that the trains pass through.

“Traveling slowly changes the way my mind interprets the world,” Kieran says. “It gives the journey and the places I visit a much greater sense of meaning. The more deeply you engage with your surroundings, the longer your vacation will seem to be.”
