Honeywell Turbo Fan

An excellent small personal fan! I use it at work from my desk, and also on the bedside table at night! Highly recommend!

Portable Turbo Fan

Purchased this product to use while bowling as most centers get pretty warm. This little fan works outstanding and the multiple ways to power it is great. Ran it continuously for about 3 hours on the battery pack and it never slowed down. Then used the usb and a usb battery pack and it used about 15% of it it about 3 hours. This product worked beyond my expectations.

I am happy with the fans. The fans put out a lot of air for to be so small. I like the fact that you can travel with the fan also. Will come in handy if you have a weather power outage, and there is no air conditioning.

Victoria K Dowdy

Great for starting seeds.

Purchased for growing seedlings. The fans are super light weight and easy to move around. I wanted just a gentle breeze and they are perfect. Think I'll order three more.

Linsey Gold

TERRI MILLER

My mini honeywell turbo fan.

Kudos to the Honeywell Team! I love my Honeywell Turbo mini on the go fans. I purchased six 6 of these for my JBL EON 610 powered speakers! I mount hang, on the back of speakers, each one at 12 oclock centered, blowing away the heat generated from speakers power amps! And yes these little turbo fans can blow keeping and removing unwanted heat away and drawing cool air into bottom cooling holes of speaker! I used the four 4 AAs at 6 volts! I will be purchasing more for backups! Thank You!

Portable fans are a great way to stay cool on the go, packing a personal breeze to keep temperatures down. After all, heat and humidity can impact our health, mood, and overall experience, especially on scorching days. As a bonus, there’s no need to worry about outlets on the go, or tangled wires, as these devices can be ready to rock with a full charge before you leave home (or the hotel) — but also come in handy during summer power outages, too. They’re a worthy investment though you’ll want to prioritize durability, battery life, weight, and easy maintenance before you shop.

Whether you need a cooling companion for your office desk, while traveling or camping, or literally all the time, there’s a portable fan fit for your needs.

Best Overall

Honeywell turbo on the go personal fan.

This rechargeable fan can also run on AA batteries as a backup.

It only has one speed.

Small but mighty, this Honeywell personal fan is our top pick for its range and dual power sources. Although it only has one speed, the air can reach up to 4 feet so it’s not lacking in force. The fan is incredibly lightweight as well making it a great companion whether you bring it on warm-weather trips or use it right at home instead. It runs pretty quietly, so if it's white noise you’re after for sleeping, this might be the fan for you. We also love that it can be hung, carried, or propped up with the versatile built-in folding stand.

If you don’t have access to a USB port for charging, 4 AA batteries offer a solid backup and, since it uses a DC motor, it saves up to 50 percent in energy usage unlike those with an AC motor. Whether you’re packing this small fan in your luggage, toting it to the gym, or using it as a personal breeze on the deck, this Honeywell Turbo portable fan gets the job done.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery or 4 AA batteries (sold separately) | 4.7 x 5 x 12.5 inches | 0.04 pounds

Best Budget

Comfortness mini portable fan.

It has 4 speeds.

It doesn’t have the option for backup batteries.

We love how powerful the compact, lightweight ComfortneSS Mini Portable Handheld Fan is for its size. It folds up for easy storage in even a purse or small tote bag, and comes with a lanyard for wearing around your wrist or neck, too. The battery life is long-lasting with the ability to keep the breeze going all day long (for up to 15 hours on a full charge). This handheld fan offers fantastic value for the price point so you don’t have to dig too deep into those pockets to stay cool. Plus, the seven blades work to keep the air flowing at four speeds — low, medium, high, and strong — so you can choose your desired strength.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 2 x 3.5 x 4.2 inches | 0.37 pounds

Best Wearable

Jisulife neck fan.

It’s bladeless with hands-free cooling.

It takes 3-4 hours to charge.

Get yourself as close to the cooling device as possible with the Jisulife Four Turbo Neck Fan. With a twin-turbine design and 58 widely-shaped air outlets, you can keep cool on the go while choosing from three adjustable speed modes. The rechargeable battery can last up to 7 hours if charged to the max, and this wearable fan is a fantastic travel companion whether spending a hot afternoon at a football game or touring city sites abroad. The bladeless design makes it safer to use with much less of a chance to catch longer hairstyles. And, since it’s lightweight, it’s both comfortable to wear and packable for wherever you need a personal cooling device.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable lithium battery | 2.3 x 7.8 x 8.7 inches | 0.75 pounds

Best for Plane Travel

Jisulife handheld mini fan.

It can be used as a handheld or desktop fan.

The highest speed can be noisy.

We love the incredibly lightweight Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan for its versatility and three working speeds. One of our favorite features is the detachable fan cover that can be taken off for quick and easy cleaning. The rechargeable battery lasts up to 20 hours at the lowest speed and up to 5 hours at the highest speed. The compact size makes it super portable to throw in a bag without taking up too much room or adding a lot of weight. The bottom includes an anti-slip mat so it can also be used on a flat surface like a tray table or desk, in lieu of holding it. Additionally, a handy anti-trigger switch on the underside of the base will keep it from accidentally turning on when inside a purse or suitcase.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 1.8 x 3.4 x 6.2 inches | 0.38 pounds

Best for Camping

Coleman lighted tent fan.

It’s both a fan and a light in one.

The rechargeable power pack is sold separately.

Tents can get hot when camping in warm weather, but the Coleman CPX 6 Lighted Tent Fan helps keep the interior nice and cool for more comfortable sleeping. The versatile design allows it to stand up on the ground or be hung from the ceiling of your tent using the magnetic base and steel plate on the exterior. Soft foam blades keep things safe, and two speeds provide airflow on high or low. The light can be dimmed to a nightlight for children sleeping inside, but note that it’s a little heavier than other portable models so may be best for car camping when it doesn’t need to be hand carried along with other gear.

The Details: 4 D batteries (sold separately), CPX 6 rechargeable power cartridge, or CPX 6 A/C adapter cartridge | 10 x 5.5 inches | 3.025 pounds

Most Versatile

Jisulife handheld mini fan.

It’s a fan, flashlight, and power bank all in one.

The included lanyard is difficult to attach.

We love that the Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan isn’t just a cooling device, but also a power bank and flashlight. This multi-tool is pocket-sized, folding up into itself so it’s easy to tote around anywhere at all. The long-lasting battery can go for up to 21 hours on the lower speed and 14 hours on the high speed. We also like the automatic-stop safety feature just in case you touch the blades by accident. This handheld fan is perfect for travel as it can fit easily in your palm, is lightweight, and gives you the option of charging your phone or having a light by your side in a pinch.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 1.46 x 1.57 x 4.72 inches | 0.27 pounds

Best Bladeless

Conbola 11.8-inch desk fan.

It is stylish, sleek, and runs smoothly.

The battery doesn't last as long as other options.

Not only can bladeless fans be more energy-efficient, they’re also often safer and easier to clean, too. This Conbola Desk Fan is our top pick in this category with up to 9 hours of cool air flow when fully charged and 3 adjustable speeds, depending on your needs. The sleek design and touch button control looks nice, and the non-slip rubber bottom keeps it in place on a range of surfaces. This is a great option to put in a checked bag or bring for car travel due to its larger size, and no blades mean your hair can’t get easily caught if you get too close. It cleans with a damp cloth and comes in a handful of appealing colors as well.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 4.5 x 5.75 x 11.8 inches | 1.27 pounds

Best Clip-on

Skygenius mini desk fan.

It has 360 degrees of rotation for the preferred placement of airflow.

The battery life isn’t that long.

Clip on the SkyGenius Battery Operated Mini Desk Fan and enjoy a powerful airflow of up to 14.5 feet. The compact size makes it easy to take along wherever you’re going — on vacation, to the office, for camping, and more. This is a great option for clipping onto a stroller or within your car but any surface that can fit the thick clip would work, too. The portable fan can be fully charged in about 4.5 hours and lasts between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the speed you choose. This durable pick operates quietly on both the low and medium speeds, but a little louder on the high speed if sound’s a top consideration for you.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 4 x 6.2 x 8 inches | 0.6 pounds

Best With Mister

Comlife portable handheld misting fan.

It’s still lightweight despite the built-in 25-milliliter water tank.

There’s no lock option for the on/off button so you have to be careful it doesn’t accidentally turn on in your bag.

Sometimes you need a little spritz with your breeze and the Comlife Portable Handheld Misting Fan has come to the rescue. We appreciate that this model comes with a silicone seal to prevent water spillage in your bag when you transport it (especially since there’s no way to lock the power switch). It clocks in at around half a pound, so it’s lightweight and portable, particularly when folded up. The original setting rotates between misting and not misting every 5 minutes but the button is multifunctional and even has the option for a continuous mist, as desired. The small, included bottle makes it easy to refill the water tank on the go, too.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery | 1.46 x 4.13 x 8.86 inches | 0.57 pounds

Best for Indoors

Sharper image personal fan.

Sharper Image

You have the option to use the USB charge or plug it into the wall directly.

We wish it came with a remote so it could be controlled from afar.

We love that the Sharper Image USB Powered Personal Fan has a removable base and offers a rotating function for better airflow and circulation. When running this fan from the battery charge on its lowest speed, it can last a full 24 hours but the plug alternative lets it continue nonstop. The compact size is perfect for the office or home, especially while working at a desk. For a small fan, it’s fairly strong and keeps the area cool, all while being quiet, too.

The Details: USB cable with rechargeable battery or wall plug | 10.5 x 11.2 x 4.3 inches | 2.2 pounds

Tips for Buying a Portable Fan

Consider the size and attachment types.

Your intended use will determine the best compactness and type. If you’re in the market for a portable fan to take on a vacation, it’s best to prioritize small devices that can fold up to pocket-sized or don’t take up too much space in your luggage. Also consider if you want a handheld fan, one with a stand, or something that can easily clip onto items like strollers. Many fans offer a few different carrying styles including attachable lanyards to go around a wrist or neck, too.

Look at performance and noise

Since we use portable fans for a variety of reasons in a range of settings, researching performance and noise level helps ensure you find the best one for your needs. Since most portable fans run on rechargeable batteries, it’s ideal to look for long battery life that will get you through most of the day. (Most portable fans can last up to 15-20 hours when used on the lowest speed.)

When using a portable fan at work, you’ll most likely want one that operates very quietly, such as a bladeless fan. When traveling, some people prefer the white noise to help them sleep, so a bit more noise is actually desired.

You’ll also want to evaluate how strong the airflow is and how far it goes; you won’t need something super forceful in a confined space like an airplane but, if you’re traveling somewhere like a theme park in Florida or heading on an African safari, purchasing a portable fan with a mister offers additional cooling in extreme temperatures.

Yes, you can bring a portable fan on an airplane in a carry-on or checked bag as long as the device is battery-operated, and complies with posted size restrictions .

Since portable fans differ in design and materials, it’s best to consult the manual for cleaning instructions for your specific model. If info is not provided, most portable fans can be cleaned well by using a vacuum duster attachment and a damp cloth. It’s best not to use cleaners that contain strong chemicals as that may damage the device. To prolong the lifespan, make sure you don’t overcharge the battery, always use the one it came with, and try to keep it out of the sun, particularly when charging.

Typically, you can expect a portable fan to last between 2 and 8 years. A portable fan’s lifespan will depend on the type you have, how often you use it, and how well you take care of it. If you leave your fan running all day, everyday, it will likely not last as long as something used sparingly. Rechargeable batteries can lose maximum potential power over time so it’s important to not overcharge them (i.e., leave them plugged in after they’ve reached full capacity). Sun exposure and water like rainfall can have an impact, too, and it’s wise to make sure not to use an indoor fan outdoors, as that can affect its lifespan as well. Additionally, cleaning your fan regularly according to the instructions provided always helps.

Most Canadians are very familiar with super cold winters and ultra-hot summers. And while some of us may fare well in hot weather, many of us don’t. At all. Whether your office doesn’t take AC seriously enough, you’re watching your spending, or you need some extra heat relief in non-insulated areas like a garage, we have just the thing to make those summer days more bearable.

We’re talking about fans, of course. They come in all shapes and sizes and can fit into any space that needs them. They’re usually portable so they can follow you around the house, and many of them have timers so you can set them and forget them. Pretty sweet, right?

If you're ready to beat the heat with a new fan, we’re here to help you. There’s a lot of variety out there, and it can be tough to know which one is best for you. They’ll differ in things like price, type, speed settings, oscillation/pivot range, size, range, and so much more. And you should think about every feature if you want the perfect match for your house. And you do, right?

This comprehensive guide will investigate the best fans in Canada right now and outline the criteria you should consider while making your purchase decision. Let’s dive right into our top five products.

  • Top Pedestal Pick: Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme+ Stand Fan

Vornado 630 mid-size whole room air circulator review, what we think of the vornado 630 mid-size whole room air circulator.

There are so many things we’re excited to tell you about with the Vornado 630 Mid-Size Whole Room Air Circulator. It’s awesome. It’s a compact and lightweight little fan, but it’s also super powerful. You can feel the air as far as 70 feet away! And with its unique Vortex Action airflow design (thanks to its deep-pitched blades, enclosed air duct, spiral grille, and inlet guide cone), it circulates the entire room without oscillating.

And even though it doesn’t oscillate, it does have a pivoting head so you can direct more air where you need it most. This fan can sit on the floor or on a tabletop (easier to reach the manual controls this way), and it has three speed settings to suit your needs. Its 5-year warranty really speaks to its quality and longevity, too. This one is a winner, folks.

We don’t have many complaints to share with you about this one. Actually, there’s only one thing we’d add to this one if we could, and that’s a timer with an automatic shutoff. It has great controls, so we aren’t overly concerned, but it would be a nice addition for convenience.

What Reviewers Are Saying About the Vornado 630 Mid-Size Whole Room Air Circulator

Reviewers are really happy with the Vornado 630 Mid-Size Whole Room Air Circulator. No matter where they are in the room, they are treated to a gentle cooling breeze—they like this much better than the no air to lots of air phenomenon that happens with oscillating fans. They also love how compact it is, and that they can use it on the floor or a table.

Rowenta turbo silence extreme+ stand fan review, what we think of the rowenta turbo silence extreme+ stand fan.

There are so many things to admire about the Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme+ Stand Fan. Our favourite thing about it is the two airflow modes it offers. The natural mode will vary the air strength to mimic a natural breeze, and the eco-friendly mode will automatically reduce the airflow after 15 minutes to reduce the energy demand. Pretty cool, huh?

This fan is also pretty special since it has a 120-degree oscillation range. Most fans are limited to less than 90 degrees! Your room coverage will be impeccable. The fan height is adjustable to suit different desk/bed/couch heights, and since it comes with a remote control, you won’t ever have to get up to adjust the settings.

There are a handful of low points that we need to mention before we wrap this up. This fan is a bit pricier than a lot of others out there, so make sure you’re aware of your budget before you settle on this one. This fan is also quite heavy, so you’ll be better off finding a permanent home for it somewhere. It also shuts off automatically after 12 hours, no matter what, so not a great option if you want it running 24/7.

What Reviewers Are Saying About the Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme+ Stand Fan

Reviewers really like the Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme+ Stand Fan. It’s pretty heavy, so they prefer to leave it in one spot in their house, but it performs really well. They love how quiet it is even at the highest speed setting, and the two air modes are a really nice addition. Most of them don’t love that it shuts off after 12 hours no matter what—some of them need it to run longer than that.

Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme+ Stand Fan Specifications

Dimensions: 52.8” x 18.2” x 16.9”

Weight: 23.3 lbs

Colour: White

Type: Pedestal

Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme+ Stand Fan Pros and Cons

Has two airflow modes—natural and energy-saving

Fan height is adjustable to reach over every desk, bed, and other furniture

120-degree oscillation provides exceptional room coverage

Has easy-to-use touch controls and a remote

Fairly heavy for a fan

Automatically shuts off after 12 hours without a timer

Our Final Thoughts on the Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme+ Stand Fan

Overall, the Rowenta Turbo Silence Extreme+ Stand Fan is a very well-rounded option that will fit right into any house needing a pedestal fan. It’s height-adjustable, quiet, easy to use, and has some pretty unique features that make it a true standout in its field. What’s not to love?

Our Top Tower Pick

Honeywell hyf260bc quietset tower fan review, what we think of the honeywell hyf260bc quietset tower fan.

We like a lot of things about the Honeywell HYF260BC QuietSet Tower Fan. Since it has five speed settings and a 75-degree oscillation, you’ll be able to use it anywhere in the house without worrying about lacklustre performance. Its extra-wide base makes it stable on any type of hard floor and carpeting it might need to rest on.

One of our favourite features is the auto-dim light. It keeps the control panel at 50% brightness unless you change a setting, and then it only needs 15 seconds to go back to that—perfect for sleeping, right? We’re happy to tell you that this option has a recessed carry handle and onboard remote storage, so it’s easy to move around the house, too.

There are a couple of features that don’t quite meet our standards. First of all, the timer settings are pretty limited—we like that it has a timer, but we’d prefer more than four options. Our other concern is the remote—it’s awkwardly shaped and doesn’t have the best response time…two no-nos when it comes to remotes, right?

What Reviewers Are Saying About the Honeywell HYF260BC QuietSet Tower Fan

Reviewers are big fans of the Honeywell HYF260BC QuietSet Tower Fan. It’s got a great oscillation and speed range that makes it useful for crowded living rooms and quiet bedrooms alike, and the light dimming is a great feature for nighttime. They don’t love the remote (it’s weirdly shaped and not super responsive), but that’s really their only issue with this fan.

Honeywell HYF260BC QuietSet Tower Fan Specifications

Dimensions: 10” x 10” x 40”

Weight: 9.3 lbs

Type: Tower

Timer: 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours

Honeywell HYF260BC QuietSet Tower Fan Pros and Cons

75-degree oscillation provides excellent room coverage

Auto-dim light will reduce the brightness by 50% after 15 seconds, and will return to 100% brightness when settings are changed

Has a recessed carry handle and remote storage in the back

Has a wide base for extra stability

Timer settings are fairly limited

Remote is awkwardly shaped and not super responsive

Our Final Thoughts on the Honeywell HYF260BC QuietSet Tower Fan

Quality: 4.5/5

Overall, the Honeywell HYF260BC QuietSet Tower Fan is a really great choice for people who love the performance and style of a tower fan. It’s fairly quiet at all speeds, stable on all surfaces, and has an auto-dim light that makes it perfect for bedrooms.

Our Premium Pick

Dyson am07 fan review, what we think of the dyson am07 fan.

The Dyson AM07 Fan is an amazing choice for everybody who can afford a higher-end option. Its performance is unbeatable. Why? Air Multiplier technology. Instead of just pushing out the same amount of air that’s in the room already, this fan can amplify it to provide a smoother and stronger airflow than any other fan. How cool is that?

This fan is great in other ways too. It’s incredibly quiet, so it’s a good choice for offices or quiet chill spaces. It oscillates 70 degrees to cover the entire space effectively. And it comes with a magnetized remote that can be stored on the top of the fan. No other fan can beat that. It’s also got 10 airflow settings and a timer that can be set to 15 minutes, 9 hours, and anywhere in between.

We have exactly zero negative things to say about this option. It performs flawlessly in every environment. Small rooms or large, noisy or quiet, this fan does its job perfectly. The only thing we would change is the price, because it’s expensive, and we believe that everyone deserves a fan like this one.

What Reviewers Are Saying About the Dyson AM07 Fan

Reviewers have a very high opinion of the Dyson AM07 Fan. It’s the most powerful fan they’ve ever used, and it’s also one of the quietest—they absolutely love this combination. It’s great for workspaces and hangout spaces, and since it has 10 speeds and a wide timer range, they have no trouble adapting it to every situation. They all believe it’s worth the high price tag.

Dyson AM07 Fan Specifications

Dimensions: 9.1” x 9.1” x 39.8”

Weight: 6.3 lbs

Timer: 15 mins to 9 hours

Warranty: 2 years

Dyson AM07 Fan Pros and Cons

Comes with a magnetized remote control that can be stored on top of the fan

70-degree oscillation can cool an entire room

Air Multiplier technology makes cooling more effective

Very expensive

Our Final Thoughts on the Dyson AM07 Fan

Usability: 5/5

Overall, the Dyson AM07 Fan is simply unbeatable when it comes to cooling performance, ease of use, and so much more. When will you ever see a magnetized remote control again? Yup, it’s pretty cool. If you’ve got the money to spare, you won’t do better than this one.

Our Budget Pick

Honeywell ht900c 7-inch turboforce power+ desk/table fan review, what we think of the honeywell ht900c 7-inch turboforce power+ desk/table fan.

The affordable Honeywell HT900C 7-Inch TurboForce Power+ Desk/Table Fan has a lot to offer in such a small package. With a 30-foot range and a head that can pivot 90 degrees vertically, you’ll be able to use it in a ton of different spaces. You can even mount it to the wall to keep the air circulating from the ceiling down.

One of our favourite features is the recessed carry handle. Combine that with its super lightweight build (it weighs less than two pounds!), and you’ve got the perfect travel companion on your hands. Or hand, rather. You only need one to carry it. Since the front grille is removable, it’ll be easy to keep this thing clean and operating at full capacity. Thank goodness.

There are only a couple of things we would upgrade in this option if we could. This fan is pretty powerful for its size, but it still can’t compete with full-size options out there…it won’t be very effective in larger spaces. Also, it’s a pretty basic fan, technologically speaking, so you don’t get the benefit of a timer or a remote control.

What Reviewers Are Saying About the Honeywell HT900C 7-Inch TurboForce Power+ Desk/Table Fan

Reviewers have mostly good things to say about the Honeywell HT900C 7-Inch TurboForce Power+ Desk/Table Fan. Although powerful for its size, it’s still only suited to small-medium rooms. Most people are happy with that, though. They’re big fans of how portable this little fan is, and it’s really easy to keep clean, which they appreciate.

Honeywell HT900C 7-Inch TurboForce Power+ Desk/Table Fan Specifications

Dimensions: 10.9” x 8.9” x 6.3”

Weight: 1.9 lbs

Range: 30 ft

Warranty: 3 years

Honeywell HT900C 7-Inch TurboForce Power+ Desk/Table Fan Pros and Cons

Has a recessed carry handle for portability

Head pivots 90 degrees vertically

Can be mounted to a wall

Grille is removable for easier cleaning

Lower power than most fans

Our Final Thoughts on the Honeywell HT900C 7-Inch TurboForce Power+ Desk/Table Fan

Performance: 4/5

Overall, the Honeywell HT900C 7-Inch TurboForce Power+ Desk/Table Fan is a really great choice for people shopping on a budget. It’s one of the most affordable fans out there, and it still offers a decent amount of power and a user-friendly design.

How to Properly Choose Your Fan

Some fans will cost you less than $25, others can cost $500 or more. With a price range that wide, there’s bound to be a lot of variety out there. In general, more expensive fans will be larger, more powerful, and will likely have some pretty unique features that pack a ton of value. Most people won’t need to spend more than $250 to get a fan that works for them, though.

There are a few different types/styles of fans on the market, and they each have their pros and cons. Tower fans and pedestal fans are the most common, but there are also table fans to consider—they’re smaller and don’t oscillate, but they can still do a great job of circulating air and they’re more portable. The larger styles tend to be more powerful and will usually have remote controls and timers.

Speed Settings

Every fan should have at least three speed settings, but the majority will have five. A rare few will even have 10 settings. The more settings there are, the better you’ll be able to suit the airflow to your specific needs at a specific moment.

Oscillation & Pivot Range

Most tower and pedestal fans will have an oscillation range between 70 and 80 degrees, and for most homes, this will be just fine. However, some can oscillate as far as 120 degrees around, and this is better if the fan is placed in a more open space instead of in a corner. Table fans can’t oscillate, but the heads do pivot vertically so you can direct the air off the ground when needed.

Timer/Auto Shutoff

Most tower and pedestal fans will have a timer that triggers an automatic shutoff when it runs out. Some timers are super versatile and will range between 15 minutes and 9 hours, others are pretty limited and will only have a handful of settings. You’ll have to decide what will work better for your space.

screenshot-2024-04-23-at-4-48-12-pm.png

One of our CBS Essentials shopping experts tried this kind of floor fan in 90-plus-degree weather while staying in a home with no AC. The floor fan successfully cooled them down that day, and quite quickly at that. They attribute the fan's effectiveness to the motor as well as the large metal blades.

The Lasko high-velocity floor fan also has three speed settings, measures 20 inches and has a 360-degree adjustable tilt. You can put this on the floor, or mount it to the wall with the included bracket for greater airflow coverage. It's commercial grade, making it ideal for garages, basements and home gyms.

The Lasko high-velocity floor fan has a 4.6-star rating on Amazon. Says one verified reviewer: "They move very air well, and have helped this cheapskate survive hot Alabama summers with minimal air conditioning. They are not quiet, but they're fantastic 'white noise generators' that have allowed me to sleep better at night."

The Lasko oscillating fan has more than 21,000 five-star ratings on Amazon. One reviewer wrote , "I've had this fan for over 5 years. It works perfectly. It works so well that I bought this second one to use on my sun porch."

In addition to its unique design, it also has a whopping 10 airflow settings, which is uncommon in the floor fan world. For a limited time, you can get the Dyson Cool AM07 for $70 off.

The Dyson Cool tower fan AM07 has a 4.6-star rating on Best Buy. One reviewer wrote , "Absolutely amazing fan! We were extremely happy with the fans' different levels of power, and its ability to make a room comfortable quickly! Most stylish: Vornado Vfan Sr. Pedestal vintage air circulation fan

vfan-sr-pedestal-vintage-air-circulator-fan.jpg

Let's face it: floor fans are generally an eyesore. If you're someone who cares about the aesthetics of your home, even down to the most functional of products, then you'll love this retro-style floor fan from Vornado.

The vintage-inspired fan comes in green and off-white, and features chic gold and silver finishes (depending on the color), including the grill of the fan. It also comes with three speed settings and is adjustable, both at the base (the height extends up to 55") and with the fan head.

The Vornado Vfan Sr. Pedestal vintage air circulation fan has a 4.9-star rating on Wayfair. One reviewer wrote , "This is the coolest fan known to man! Literally it kicks out a massive amount of air, plus it's super stylish."

Another customer said , "Nice, cool looking and not too noisy! Bought another one after seeing how great the first one was!"

Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 Air Purifier and Fan

Yes, the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde is a floor fan and an  air purifier all in one. But there's a lot more to it than just that. It has a HEPA H13 filter, which filters even finer particles than a standard HEPA filter. It can also destroy formaldehyde in the air from furniture off-gassing and cigarette smoke.

This quiet Dyson fan is powerful. It projects over 77 gallons of air a second. Air can blow out of either the front or back of the machine, plus it can oscillate up to 350 degrees. Control it with an app or your voice. It also offers an ultra-quiet night mode for light sleepers.

You can find the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 at Dyson and Amazon for $749. It's available in nickel/gold and white/gold colorways.

Best tower fans to keep you cool

Tower fans can help keep your space cool on those hot, summer days and can easily be transported around your home, depending on where you need some extra cooling. They're slim so they don't take up too much space, and are far more energy efficient than running your air conditioner all day long. Below, find the best tower fans to buy right now, plus a shopping guide for tower fans in case you want to select your own.

Tower fan shopping guide

Noise level: You'll want a tower fan that has a night mode so it won't disturb you overnight. Every option we recommend is fairly quiet and has multiple fan speed levels, including an option designed to be specifically used at night - usually setting your fan to the lowest speed setting and dimming any console lights.

CFM : CFM stands for cubic feet for minute and measures how much air a fan can move in a minute. A higher CFM rating means a fan is better at cooling and generating airflow. Most options below are best for rooms under 200 feet, as tower fans will generally have a max CFM of 1,500. While they can be used for bigger spaces, they won't be as efficient as cooling them, so keep that in mind when you shop.

Design: Tower fans are all slim and portable. For your convenience, we've only recommended options that weigh under 10 pounds so you can easily store them or transport them around your home.

Remote control: Some tower fans come with the option of a remote control so you can operate them from your bed or your couch.

Smart functions: Some tower fans can be integrated into your smart home ecosystem, so you can use Google or Alexa to operate them hands-free. You can also set schedules and turn your fan on or off remotely.

Dreo 120 Oscillating Tower Fan

I've owned this Dreo fan for around two years now and it's been my go-to product to keep my New York City studio cool during the summers. It has a quiet mode that's barely audible at night time (just 25dB which is akin to the sound of breathing), and up to 12 speed settings depending on how much cooling you need. There is also a special Auto Mode that personalizes your fan's setting, depending on the ambient temperature in your room. It oscillates too, which makes it perfect for cooling my large open space. Finally, it can also be integrated with your chosen smart home assistant so you can operate your new fan with just voice controls.

Airflow capacity (CFM): 1475 Cubic Feet Per Minute (best for rooms between 200 to 300 square feet)

Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde

Dyson's option is a fan that doubles as an air purifier. It has a high price tag, but it's worth the money, and here's why: It has a HEPA filter to capture any dust, dirt or bacteria. It also has 350-degree oscillation, to capture almost every inch of your room. There are also automatic filter notifications on the fan itself and available through the MyDyson app. It's also advertised as a formaldehyde (odorless, toxic gas released from common household items) eliminator, built with a catalytic filter. There are also auto shut-off features and a night mode for quiet operation.

Airflow capacity (CFM): Unavailable, but suitable for rooms up to 999 square feet, according to the brand

Lasko Oscillating Tower Fan

With three quiet fan speeds and 60-degree oscillation, this is one of the best tower fans you can buy. It comes with an easy-to-use remote control and a nighttime setting that dims the LED lights on your fan. There is also a carry handle, making it easy to move around your apartment. It is louder than some of our other picks, clocking in at 55 dB at its highest setting (as loud as a normal conversation between two people). You can shop it in two colors, including a wood grain option that will blend well into any living space.

Airflow capacity (CFM): 634 Cubic Feet Per Minute, best for rooms under 200 square feet

Honeywell QuietSet Whole Room Tower Fan

This no-frills tower fan comes with eight speed settings including a sleep setting to keep you from getting disturbed at night. It oscillates too, and comes with a remote control that nestles in a slot conveniently placed on the back of this fan. It also has a carrying handle for ease of transport and an auto-off timer so you can set schedules. Amazon customers say it's easy to assemble too, great for smaller spaces like a studio apartment, nursery or home office.

Airflow capacity (CFM): 500 Cubic Feet Per Minute, best for rooms under 200 square feet

Abolee Tower Fan

The Abolee Tower Fan weighs just three pounds and is perfect to place on your home office desk or nightstand. It has four speeds and four modes, including a sleep mode for quiet operation. There is also 70-degree oscillation and an included remote control like all the other options on our list. This one is best for small spaces, or if you're looking for something ultra-portable. It's also quieter than some of our larger picks with a noise level of just 29 dB at its lowest setting, just slightly louder than our top pick.

Airflow capacity (CFM): Unavailable, but will be lower than our other picks as it's much smaller (13-inches)

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
