Chicago welcomes hundreds of thousands of international visitors each year. Let us be your guide to the city, from getting here to getting around while you’re here and beyond.

COVID-19 travel guidance

The federal government is currently enforcing the following guidelines for international travelers coming to the U.S.

  • All non-U.S. citizens, non-U.S. immigrants traveling to the United States by air must show proof of being fully vaccinated . Only limited exceptions apply.
  • Wearing a mask over your nose and mouth is recommended in indoor areas of public transportation (including airplanes) and indoors in U.S. transportation hubs (including airports).
  • Chicago’s international airports offer the nation’s most comprehensive in-airport COVID-19 testing program. Learn more about  airport testing and safety measures .

Entering the United States

Two documents are needed to enter the United States:

  • A valid passport
  • If your country is not part of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), you will need to obtain a visitor visa from the U.S. Department of State. The VWP allows citizens of over 30 participating countries to travel to the United States without a visa for stays of 90 days or less. Find out if you qualify .

If your country is not part of the VWP, there are three visitor visa categories you may apply for:

B-1: For those entering the U.S. temporarily for business

B-2: For those visiting for pleasure

B-1/B-2: For a combination of both

Note: Citizens of Canada and Bermuda visiting the United States for temporary travel generally do not require a nonimmigrant visa.

Check the latest requirements here .

Check the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s  (CBP) regulations concerning commercial and personal items that are permitted into the United States.

Also, CBP’s Trusted Traveler Programs — which include Global Entry, NEXUS, and SENTRI — provide expedited travel for pre-approved travelers through dedicated lanes and kiosks.

The city of Chicago is home to more than 80 Consulates/Consuls General offices. Find your foreign consulate here .

“Are you sure?” she asked.

“Yes,” I said. “Lufthansa uses Terminal 1 for its outbound flights.”

She looked at her ticket, then back at me. “Are you sure?” she asked again. “Yes,” I repeated, explaining further about airline check-in locations at O’Hare.

She looked along the concourse, as if hoping Lufthansa’s ticket counter might suddenly appear nearby, then decided to try once more. “Are you sure ?”

Despite the rise of the COVID-19 delta variant, air travel is thriving again, and O’Hare has regained its status as one of the busiest airports on the planet. Its size and general hurly-burly can cause many travelers to get mixed up about flights and gates and terminals — particularly with the added stress of COVID-19 restrictions, a travel advisory for half the country , and hundreds of flight cancellations in recent weeks .

That’s where the O’Hare Travelers Aid Office comes in. Its information desks — there are nine, scattered around the airport’s four terminals (yes, four) — are staffed by volunteers, and I’m one of them. In pre-pandemic 2019, the Travelers Aid Office helped 1.1 million people at the airport with the most takeoffs and landings in the world .

In this instance, the hapless woman in Terminal 5 had made a common mistake: Known unofficially as the International Terminal, T-5 is where almost all incoming international flights arrive, because that’s where the U.S. Customs representatives are located. (There are exceptions; Canadian flights get cleared by customs before departure.)

More than 30 airlines use Terminal 5 for outbound international flights. But seven use other terminals: In Terminal 1, you’ll find outbound international flights for United Airlines, Lufthansa and All Nippon Airways; Air Canada is in Terminal 2 (United’s here too); and American Airlines, Iberia and Japan Airlines use Terminal 3.

Terminal 5 is also used by three airlines — Southwest Airlines, Frontier and Sun Country Air — for outbound and inbound domestic flights.

Confusing? Absolutely. But we’re here to help you through it.

Here are some O’Hare traveling pointers, based on my five years of information desk volunteering and 50,000 travelers helped. Stick with it to learn what happened to O’Hare’s Terminal 4. (Hint: It still exists — sort of.)

How many airlines are at O’Hare?

About 50 passenger airlines fly into and out of O’Hare’s four terminals. I say about because that number changes. Just in the last few years, Southwest, TAP Air Portugal, Ethiopian Airlines, Denver Air, Sun Country and Air New Zealand began flying into O’Hare. Qantas, El Al and Air Italy have also expressed interest in beginning O’Hare service.

Volunteer Jon Ziomek helps flyers at an information desk at O'Hare International Airport on Aug. 11, 2021.

Do you know which airline you’re flying?

A surprisingly large number of travelers are unable to answer correctly. It can be confusing because of a process known as a “code share.” Several airlines can sell tickets to the same flight if they’re partner airlines, even though only one of them will be making the flight.

So, even if you booked through American Airlines for a trip to London, for example, you should review your airline code and flight number. You may be on a British Airways flight, because American and British are partner airlines. That’s important because American’s flights, including its London flights, leave from Terminal 3, and British Airways flights leave from Terminal 5.

The airline code and flight number are the key; if you can find that information, you can easily determine your gate.

What your flight number tells you

Your airline code and flight number are on your boarding pass, in surprisingly small lettering, given how important they are. Most airlines have a two-letter code, although a few airlines use one letter and one number.

Some of the codes are easy, like AA (American Airlines), DL (Delta Air Lines) or UA (United Airlines). Others aren’t so easy: NK is Spirit Airlines, F9 is Frontier Airlines, and WN is Southwest Airlines.

After the code is your flight number, which could be one to four digits. If your flight number has four digits, it’s likely to be a code share with partner airlines.

Terminals 1, 2 and 3, counterclockwise from top right, at O'Hare International Airport on March 2, 2018.

A few terminal quirks

JetBlue and Alaska Airlines have ticket counters and baggage claim in Terminal 2, but both use gates in the G concourse, which is in Terminal 3. (It’s a relatively short walk.)

United uses Terminal 1 and 2, but United’s Terminal 2 check-in area is only for travelers limited to carry-on luggage. Even if your United boarding pass says Terminal 2 (E gates and F gates), you must go to Terminal 1 if you are checking luggage.

Conversely, if you arrive on a United flight in Terminal 2 and have baggage to retrieve, you must walk to Terminal 1.

Delta uses E concourse gates only. Air Canada is even more specific: All its flights use either gate E2 or E3. The smaller and discount airlines such as Spirit and Air Choice One and Cape Air and Denver Air usually use the L concourse gates in Terminal 3.

Read signs carefully — especially this one

There are signs near O’Hare’s Blue Line train stop, underneath the parking garage, that list airlines by terminal. Many airlines are listed in Terminal 5, but several have a very important added phrase: “international arrivals only.” In other words, those airlines don’t depart from T-5.

The stress of travel can cause people to scramble that information — they don’t see that crucial extra phrase. The result is frustrated people who make the trek to T-5, find out they’re in the wrong terminal, and then blame the sign.

Why isn’t my flight on the big screen?

O’Hare handles close to 2,500 flights every day. No flight screen is that large. You won’t find your Terminal 3 flight on American Airlines posted on any of the United boards in Terminal 1, and vice versa. Use a search engine or a travel app (most airlines have free ones) or the nearest Travelers Aid information desk for up-to-date flight information.

Do I have to go outside security to get to my next flight?

Probably not. Because of O’Hare’s design, you can walk from the most remote gate in Terminal 1 to the farthest corner of Terminal 2 or Terminal 3 while staying inside the TSA security stations. T-5, in an unconnected separate building, is the only terminal requiring a shuttle.

An important note about Terminal 5 departures

Most T-5 airlines don’t open their ticket counter until about three hours before their scheduled departures, but they’re strict about closing their ticket counter 60 to 75 minutes before the flight is scheduled to depart. Plan accordingly.

Which baggage is yours?

Many flummoxed people have come to one of the Travelers Aid desks because they picked up the wrong bag from a carousel and didn’t realize it right away.

For domestic flights, airline representatives are relatively easy to find. However, if this happens for an international flight in Terminal 5, it’s difficult to fix because the baggage claim area is inside security — which travelers can’t access once they go outside.

If you own dark-colored luggage — as many travelers do — put an easy-to-see, highly legible name tag on your bag. While you’re at it, tie a bright-colored ribbon on a bag handle for quick confirmation you’ve got the right one.

Parking at O’Hare

First and foremost, remember which lot you’re in. O’Hare’s eight parking lots are designated by letters, A through H.

Lot A is the big parking garage inside the giant U-shape formed by Terminals 1, 2, and 3. If you’re in that parking garage, and you remember which floor you’re on (they’re designated by Chicago sports team names), that’s good, but you’re not done yet.

Remember, write down or take a photo of the number of the closest elevator bank. The garage has six numbered elevator banks, spaced from one end of the garage to the other. You’ll save yourself time if you know which elevator bank is closest to your car.

Some O’Hare trivia:

O’Hare Airport was named for Edward “Butch” O’Hare, a skilled U.S. Navy pilot who received a Medal of Honor for his exploits in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

O’Hare’s airport code, ORD, stands for Orchard Field, the airport’s original name. The name was changed to O’Hare International Airport in the 1950s, but the code wasn’t.

international travel o'hare

I said earlier I’d tell you what happened to Terminal 4. Many O’Hare travelers have noticed that the terminal numbering is curious: 1, 2, 3 and then 5.

What happened to 4? It was used as a temporary terminal in the 1990s, when the current Terminal 5 was being constructed. When Terminal 5 went into operation, Terminal 4 was converted into what is now O’Hare’s Bus/Shuttle Center. It does still look like a small terminal.

The hotels near O’Hare pick up their guests here, and the regional buses arrive and depart here. (They also stop at Terminal 5.) If you’ve got too much time on your hands, see if you can find the one leftover sign identifying Terminal 4. Hint: It’s in an oddly tucked away location near a seldom-used elevator.

These tips are a fraction of what people ask about at the information desks. Remember: If you don’t know … don’t be shy about asking! O’Hare is ginormous. It’s OK to be confused. The Travelers Aid people enjoy being helpful — you’re why we do this.

Pre-pandemic, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) was the busiest U.S. airport in 2019 in terms of aircraft movements, serving over 900,000 flights. It’s a major airport for connections all over the U.S., operating as the main hub for United Airlines and the third-largest hub for American Airlines.

Flight connections are easy between the 3 domestic terminals, all connected by airside pedestrian walkways. However, Terminal 5 is a bit more of a journey for international flight connections. That’s set to change in the future with a huge expansion project currently underway that will replace Terminal 2 with a new “global terminal” to accommodate both domestic and international flights under the same roof.

In the meantime, here’s what you need to know to get around O’Hare.

The road system that runs inside ORD is a hexagonal shape, with Terminals 1, 2, and 3 situated along the outside of the bottom 3 sides, and the parking lots, Multi-Modal Facility (car rental), and I-190 located in the top half.

Terminals 1 to 3 are referred to as the domestic terminals, and these 3 terminals are connected to each other via pedestrian walkways.

Terminal 5, the last terminal to be built, is located a short distance from the other terminals, connected by shuttle services and the Airport Transit System (ATS). Although it is referred to as the international terminal, some international flights do depart from other terminals — but they only arrive into Terminal 5 .

Chicago O Hare International Airport Terminal 1

Terminal 1 (T1) consists of Concourses B and C, with Concourse B attached to the main terminal, and Concourse C as a satellite terminal , connected by an underground pedestrian walkway.

Overall, the terminal has 54 gates, numbered B1 to B12, B14, B16, B16A, B17, B17A, and B18 to B24 in Concourse B, and C1 to C10, C10A, C11, C15, C16, C16A, C17, C18, C18A, C19 to C23, and C25 to C31 in Concourse C.

Both concourses have shops and restaurants and a United Club . Concourse C also has a United Polaris Lounge , as T1 is the primary terminal for United Airlines for both domestic and international flights.

Hot Tip: Want to find other United lounge locations? Check out the full list of U.S. United Club lounges .

Chicago O Hare International Airport Terminal 2

Terminal 2 has a total of 41 gates across 2 concourses. Concourse E has gates numbered E1 to E17, and Concourse F has gates numbered F1, F3 to F7, F9 to F12, F14 to F17, and F19 to F28.

The lower numbered gates are situated in the main terminal, with E gates on the right and F gates on the left, until the terminal forks into the individual concourses.

There are shops and restaurants across both concourses and a United Club in Concourse F.

Chicago O Hare International Airport Terminal 3

Terminal 3 is a large terminal, consisting of 4 concourses and 76 gates numbered as follows:

  • Concourse G: G1A, G1B, G2A, G2B, G3 to G5, G6B, G7 to G14, G14A, G16 to G19, G19A, G20, and G21
  • Concourse H: H1 to H6, H8 to H10, H11A, H11B, H12, and H14 to H18
  • Concourse K: K1 to K6, K8 to K10, K12, K13, K15, K16, and K18 to K20
  • Concourse L: L1, L1B, L2A, L2C, L3 to L5, L6A, L6B, L7 to L9, L10A, L10B, L10C, L11, L11A, and L11B

If passing through the central security checkpoints, Concourse G is to the far right and Concourses H and K are down the main central walkway, with Concourse H to the right where it forks and Concourse K to the left. Concourse L is to the far left of the terminal.

Concourses G and L both have an Admirals Club, and Concourses H and K have an American Airlines Flagship Lounge.

Hot Tip: Are you an American Airlines flyer trying to find other Flagship Lounges? See the full list of U.S. AA Flagship Lounge locations.

ORD Terminal 5

Terminal 5 is ORD’s main international terminal , as it’s where the most international airline ticket desks are based. T5 also serves some domestic flights, and the other terminals serve some international flights.

In T5, flights depart from Concourse M, where there are 36 gates numbered M1 to M11, M13 to 21, M24 to M30, and M32 to M40. Passing through the security checkpoint, gates M18 to M40 are to the left, M13 to M17 are straight ahead, and gates M1 to M11 are to the right.

Chicago O Hare International Airport Connections

Connecting between Terminals 1 to 3 and Terminal 5 is usually straightforward via the Airport Transit System (ATS) that runs between terminals.

The train service also connects passengers to the new Multi-Modal Facility for the car rental center, economy parking lot F, Kiss ‘n’ Fly, Pace buses, and Metra.

Airside Transport Post-security

Terminal transfer bus (ttb) .

Chicago O Hare Terminal transfer bus

Hot Tip: The TTB service has been temporarily suspended .

The terminal transfer bus transports domestic arrival passengers between Terminals 1 to 3 and Terminal 5 for connecting flights, without the need to re-clear security again on arrival at T5.

This service is for passengers who are not required to collect their luggage in between connections, and it’s not available for international passengers arriving into T5 with connections in Terminals 1 to 3.

Buses operate daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and depart from the following locations in Terminal 3:

Terminals 1 to 3 are connected by airside walkways, which are useful for passengers arriving on a domestic flight and connecting to another domestic flight.

To walk from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, the walkway is located on the departures level, opposite gates B5 and B6. The walkway arrives near gate E1 in Terminal 2.

To reach Terminal 3 from Terminal 2, the walkway is located near gate F1 and arrives into the rotunda of Terminal 3.

Walking time will depend entirely on which concourse and gate you’re walking to and from. The furthest points (Terminal 1, Concourse C to Terminal 3, Concourse L) are just over a mile apart from each other, so at an average speed, the maximum walking time would be around 20 minutes.

Landside Transport Pre-security

Airport transit system (ats).

Chicago O'Hare International Airport ATS

The ATS is a light rail service that stops at all terminals. It’s located outside of the secure area, so you do need to re-clear security again at your connecting terminal.

Each terminal has an ATS station located landside and is well signposted with “ATS” signs. Trains depart frequently and run in both directions, so you can choose the route that will get you to your connecting terminal quickest.

Hot Tip: Are you looking for some things to do while you’re there? Check out these popular Chicago activities and attractions .

Each terminal at ORD has a different number of security checkpoints. Terminal 1 has 3 checkpoints, Terminal 2 has 1 checkpoint, Terminal 3 has 5 checkpoints, and Terminal 5 has 1 main checkpoint.

See below for each security checkpoint’s opening hours:

TSA PreCheck

ORD has dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes at each terminal. Dedicated PreCheck lines are available at the following checkpoints:

There is also a TSA PreCheck Enrollment Center located in Terminal 1 in the baggage claim area near door 1G. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Once approved, you’ll receive a Known Traveler Number that will enable you to use TSA PreCheck lanes at any U.S. airport.

Global Entry

Global Entry kiosks are located at ORD for expedited clearance of passengers arriving into the U.S. from international flights.

Once an application has been submitted, the applicant will need to arrange an interview at an enrollment center. ORD has an enrollment center located in Terminal 5, which is open from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Mobile Passport

ORD supports Mobile Passport Control for expedited U.S. arrival.

Submit your passport details and customs declaration to Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) via the app, and present your instant receipt and passport to an agent on arrival at ORD.

ORD participates in CLEAR , a program for expedited security clearance using eye and fingerprint scanning instead of showing an ID at the security checkpoint. CLEAR lanes are available during the following hours for PreCheck-eligible travelers and standard security:

ORD has nearly 20 lounges, with many exclusively for passengers flying in premium cabins or eligible frequent flyer members. To relax away from the busy departure areas, any passenger can purchase a day pass to the Admirals Club , Swissport Lounge, or United Club .

* Hours are subject to change without notice. Lounge access may be restricted at times due to capacity. ** Day Pass for any passenger. Lounges marked as n/a only allow entry for eligible passengers in their premium cabins, frequent flyer programs, or participating credit card programs.

Hot Tip: Want lounge access, but don’t want to pay the entry fee? Check out this article on the best credit cards for lounge access .

Priority Pass Access

Priority Pass members may access the Swissport Lounge, subject to capacity allowance.

Hot Tip: Find out about membership in our dedicated Priority Pass article , as well as the best credit cards for getting Priority Pass access .

ORD has over 130 restaurants, cafes, and food outlets, with the largest selection available inside the secure area .

If you want to plan where to eat before your flight, you can view available locations on the airport’s website and filter results by terminal, concourse, or gate number.

Free and unlimited Wi-Fi is available at ORD, both outside and within the secure areas. To connect, follow these steps:

  • Select “_Free_ORD _Wi-Fi” or “Boingo Hotspot”
  • Launch your browser
  • Select “Watch Ad to Connect”

Charging Stations:  There are charging stations located at:

  • Terminal 1: Gates B5, B11, B12, B14, B19, C5, C15, C21, C28
  • Terminal 2: Gates E8, F2, F5
  • Terminal 3: Gates G13, G17, H12, K9, K12, L10B
  • Terminal 5: Gates M13

Hot Tip: Not every airport has a charging station, so don’t get caught with a dead battery. Check out this guide on the best portable charging banks so you’re always connected.

Who to contact for lost and found assistance depends on where you lost the item. If you lost something in the ticketing area, at the gate, or on an airplane, then you need to contact your airline.

Chicago O'Hare International Airport Expansion Plan

Chicago recently announced the winning architectural firm for the O’Hare 21 expansion plan for a new Global Terminal. With an estimated completion of 2028, you’ll be waiting a while. But the $8.5 billion expansion project will replace the existing T2 with a modernized terminal and 25 additional gates.

The winning design by lead architects Studio Gang aims to bring the outdoors in, with lots of trees, sunlight, and open space. T2’s additional capacity will enable both domestic and international flights to depart from the new terminal.

Now that the Airport Transit System has been newly renovated, passengers can now ride this free service between all the terminals and to the car rental center, Multi-Modal Facility, economy car parking lots, and Metra train station with ease.

Terminal 5 has also seen some significant improvements with its capacity increased by 25%, new roadway enhancements, and expanded curbside pick-up and drop-off areas.

Cathay Pacific airline plane at an airport gate

A Cathay Pacific jet departed O’Hare International Airport last week for Hong Kong, resuming nonstop flights for the first time in three years and getting a splashy sendoff from two airport firetrucks.

International travel is now leading O’Hare International Airport’s recovery from the pandemic, marking a turnaround from the early days when domestic travel was the primary driver. It also hints at what could be lasting changes in air travel, in Chicago and elsewhere.

The number of passengers on international flights at O’Hare in July increased 22% from a year earlier, while overall travel increased 9%, according to airport data.  The volume of international passengers was 91% of the level in July 2019, before COVID-19 restrictions, such as lengthy quarantines, all but shut down overseas travel.

A year earlier, international volumes were just 74% of pre-pandemic levels.

The rebound is encouraging for O’Hare and a city that relies heavily on tourism. It’s also a reminder that corporate travel, upon which the airport and Chicago also depend, hasn’t fully returned.

Domestic passengers inched up to 85% of pre-pandemic levels from 80% a year earlier. Overall, the airport was at 86% of pre-COVID passenger totals in July.

It illustrates a recovery that has been lurching along in fits and starts.

“The U.S. was ahead of rest of the world in having a strong domestic market coming out of the pandemic,” says John Grant of OAG, a travel-research firm. “Then international travel came back. Most international markets are up to or ahead of where they were in 2019.”

International travel has surged, fueled by pent-up demand to visit friends and relatives and the desire to make up for missed vacation opportunities. The percentage of seats filled on airplanes, known as the load factor, is at record levels.

O’Hare is among the top U.S. airports for international travel, in part because of the large number of domestic connecting flights operated by its two largest carriers, United and American. It doesn’t, however, have the same level of international traffic in terms of the raw number of passengers as coastal hubs, such as New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

International travelers account for about 1 in 5 passengers at O’Hare, but they tend to spend more at the airport and outside it, on hotels, restaurants and shopping. They also fuel the need for domestic connecting flights.

The passengers on Cathay Pacific’s nonstop to Hong Kong were involved with more than 100 domestic connecting flights, says Chris van den Hooven, the airline’s senior vice president for the Americas.

International travel holds the key to long-term growth for the industry. “We expect a disproportionate part of our growth in the second half of this decade to come from global long-haul flying as the U.S. domestic market is mature,” Andrew Nocella, United’s chief commercial officer, said last week after the airline ordered 50 more Boeing 787s for delivery by 2030.

At the moment, domestic travel is in flux, at O’Hare and elsewhere. Airlines such as United and American are dealing with pilot shortages, which disproportionately impact regional-jet carriers. O’Hare relies more on regional service than any major airport in the country. And corporate travel hasn’t fully recovered, presenting another headwind for getting domestic service at O’Hare back to pre-pandemic levels.

Terminal 1 Lounges

If you’re flying on United, this is the terminal where you’ll find your lounges. United Club members may use the United Club lounges at Gates B6, B18, and C16. Other United travelers may be able to purchase a one-day pass, if space is available. Star Alliance Gold members also have access to this lounge, which offers food and drink, free Wi-Fi, and printers.

The United Polaris Lounge at Gate C18 is open to international first-class and business-class passengers. Multi-course meals are available, and rest pods and shower facilities give you a chance to freshen up before your flight.

Terminal 2 Lounges

You’ll find another United Club lounge in Terminal 2, with much the same amenities as those in Terminal 1. Head to Gate F9 to relax in this lounge.

Delta also offers its Sky Club at Gate E6. Delta Sky Club members and their guests can take advantage of this spacious lounge, and one-day passes are also available. While Sky Club doesn’t offer much in the way of business services, complementary food and drink can help you prep for your flight.

If you’re an Admirals Club member flying American Airlines, JAL or Iberia, the Admirals Clubs in Terminal 3 are available to you. Look for them at Gates G8, L1, H6, and K6. You’ll find complementary food and drinks across each lounge, while some locations also offer business services, made-to-order meals, and shower facilities.

Those flying first-class and business-class on American, as well as qualifying elite AAdvantage members and oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members can relax at the American Flagship Lounges at Gates H6 and K6. Premium wines, specialty cocktails and personalized meal service await you here, along with shower suites and plenty of space to spread out.

Terminal 5 Lounges

Since Terminal 5 is the international terminal at O’Hare, it’s not surprising to see high-end lounges from several international carriers. The Air France/KLM lounge provides free Wi-Fi and international newspapers to guests not only of these two airlines but also those flying Air India, Alitalia, Royal Jordanian, Etihad Airways, and LOT Polish Airlines. Priority Pass customers also have access to this lounge.

British Airways has a couple of Terminal 5 lounges. Its First Lounge, open to first-class passengers, has separate business and entertainment areas and offers pre-flight, waiter-service dining. The Terraces lounge, for business-class passengers, offers free Wi-Fi, charging stations, and pre-flight dining. Both lounges are near Gate M12, and both are also open to eligible Cathay Pacific passengers.

Other airlines offering lounges in Terminal 5 include SAS, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, and Finnair. Priority Pass members may use the Swissport Lounge at Gate M7.

Chicago O’Hare shopping – from practical to luxurious

Shopping at O’Hare ranges from the last-minute things you forgot to pack to high-end luxury items for yourself or someone special. Terminal 5 houses most of the designer labels, and Terminal 3 is where you’ll find the greatest number of shops. Take a look at where you can find necessities and a little decadence at O’Hare.

Pick up something to read on the flight at Barbara’s Bookstore, CNN Newstand Chicago or Hudson News, or update your in-flight electronics at InMotion. Hoypoloi features the work of local artists as well as popular favorites, making it a great place to pick up a gift, or stop in at the Field Museum Store to choose something unique to Chicago. If you need sunglasses for your trip to the tropics, Oakley and Sunglass Hut have you covered.

Headphone Hub can take care of you if your earbuds have stopped functioning. Treat yourself to some of Sarah’s Candies if you want to add a sweet touch to your airline meal, or update your toiletries kit when you stop in at MAC Cosmetics.

Should you need to sharpen up your look for a big meeting at the end of your flight, Brooks Brothers stands ready to help. On the more casual side, Chicago Sports features merchandise celebrating the Bears, Bulls, Cubs and more — or stop at the Harley-Davidson store to proclaim a different kind of allegiance. You’ll be delighted by the fine silverwork at Talie, and Erwin Pearl expands your jewelry options in the terminal.

High-end designers abound at Terminal 5, so go ahead and browse through Emporio Armani, Michael Kors, and Salvatore Ferragamo. If you’re in the market for a new watch, or just the right gift, stop in at Swatch or Luxury Watches. Gadget lovers will have a hard time tearing themselves away from Brookstone.

Chicago O’Hare hotels – full-service accommodations

Right inside Chicago O’Hare airport, walking distance from all the domestic terminals, is the Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport Hotel. All the hotel’s rooms feature noise-resistant windows and Wi-Fi, and allergy-friendly rooms are available.

The Hilton is a full-service hotel, with a spacious, well-equipped fitness center, a barber shop, several restaurants and bars, and a business center, as well as 43 meeting rooms of various sizes.

If you find yourself on a trip to Chicago, we have compiled a comprehensive list of the best business hotels in Chicago to help make your decision on where to stay easier.

Chicago O’Hare dining – from hot dogs to fine dining

At every terminal at O’Hare, you can find a range of food and beverage options to keep you happy until it’s time to board your plane. Choose from classic Chicago hot dogs and pizzas, pick up a picnic lunch for the plane, or sit down at a table-service restaurant to relax with a drink and a memorable meal. Plenty of Chicago’s most popular restaurants have spin-offs here. Take a look at some of your top choices across the terminals.

Enjoy dining at a wide range of quick-serve and more upscale choices in Terminal 1, including:

  • Tortas Frontera. Order your tortas ahead of time to have them waiting as soon as you clear security — or do it the other way, and call in your order as soon as the pilot says you can turn your phone on as you land. (Also in Terminals 3 and 5)
  • Berghoff Cafe. Those from Chicagoland will recognize this iconic German restaurant. They line up for it in the city, and flock to it here for its popular Reuben, corned beef, and other deli sandwiches.
  • Beaudevin. Stop by for a glass of wine at this European-style bar — or ask for a flight to try an interesting sampling. Nibbles and sandwiches are available, too.
  • Goose Island Beer Co. Craft brews from one of Chicago’s favorite breweries bring thirsty travelers to this bar, which also serves breakfast and lunch sandwiches.

Terminal 2 keeps you well-fed as you wait to make your connection. Choose your favorite cuisine from the following:

  • Wicker Park Seafood and Sushi Bar. Pull up to the sushi bar to enjoy fresh rolls, nigiri and sashimi, or pick up some sushi for the plane. (Also in Terminal 1)
  • La Tapenade. Dining is fast and delicious at this quick-serve spot that serves up wraps and panini — and it has a full bar as well. (Also in Terminal 3)
  • Summer House Santa Monica. If you enjoy Chicago’s Lincoln Park restaurant, you’ll like this airport version. California-style salads and tacos bring a light, flavorful flair to your travel — and make sure to pick up a cookie for the road.

Whether you prefer a good beer or a solid meal before eating, Terminal 3 can take care of you at the following eateries:

  • Publican Tavern. Choose from about a dozen beers on tap, including craft beers, and add a little pub grub to your order as part of your in-flight dining treat.
  • Bubbles Wine Bar. You’ll feel like you’re in a jazz club when you order a rejuvenating glass of sparkling wine here. Relax to the sound of that grand piano.
  • Garrett Popcorn. Want just a snack? A little something salty for the plane? Pick up a bag of your favorite flavor. (Also in Terminal 1)
  • Gold Coast Dogs. How can you pass through Chicago without a classic hot dog? Just remember not to ask for ketchup.

Here at the international terminal, it’s not surprising to find plenty of international cuisine to choose from:

  • Tocco. Wood-fired pizzas pair with tasty pastas to let you sample Italy before you even board your plane to Rome.
  • Big Bowl. Noodles? Potstickers? All the Asian comfort food you can think of awaits you here, along with wine and beer.
  • Goddess and Grocer. This is a great little cafe for grabbing a takeaway meal to carry on your plane, or stop in for your favorite coffee drink.

Layover lowdown: Chicago O'Hare International Airport

Ethan Steinberg

Even with the introduction of ultra-long-haul flights like Singapore to Newark or Qantas' ambitious dream of flying nonstop from New York to Sydney , layovers are still a necessary part of many trips, whether you're flying domestically within the US or on a longer international journey. With Chicago O'Hare (ORD) serving as a major hub to both American Airlines and United, as well as a popular destination among foreign carriers, there's a good chance you'll end up passing through O'Hare at some point in your travelers.

Today, we're going to take a look at how you can make your layover even more enjoyable at one of the busiest airports in the country.

At the airport

O'Hare is in the midst of an $8 billion expansion and renovation plan that will include an upgrade to Terminal 5, a new "global terminal" and satellite concourses where Terminal 2 currently stands. Most of these projects are still a few years down the road, so for now travelers passing through O'Hare can expect a fair amount of construction, and discrete terminals that for the most part aren't connected airside.

Terminal 1 belongs to United and a number of its Star Alliance partners, and is also where you'll find the iconic rainbow walk, a subterranean art installation that helps lighten the mood as passengers travel between the B and C concourses.

O'Hare is also home to the first ever United Polaris lounge , which represents a massive improvement in the carrier's ground experience. This lounge is only accessible to passengers traveling in long-haul Star Alliance business or first class — no amount of elite status can get you in.

United Polaris Lounge Review

The next major terminal is 3, which primarily houses American Airlines and a few other Oneworld carriers. This was the terminal I spent the most time in when I lived in Chicago, and after four years I grew especially frustrated with the constant 'traffic jams' created by the terminals "Y" shape (which makes it hard for more than one plane to push back at a time). Inside though, American Airlines offers its Flagship check-in experience and lounge , despite having seriously cut back on its trans-Pacific routes from Chicago.

AA ORD Flagship Lounge - window seating overlooking gates

Terminal 5 is where most international airlines — regardless of alliance membership — fly out of. This is also where you'll find O'Hare's only Priority Pass lounges, the Air France - KLM lounge and the Swissport lounge. While I've heard conflicting reports, I've never been able to access Terminal 5 when flying out of another terminal, so these lounges will really only be available for international passengers. In addition to these Priority Pass options, you'll find British Airways, SAS and Swiss lounges in Terminal 5 as well.

Terminals 1 and 3 have a good range of food options, with each terminal offering a decently sized food court and some shopping options. You won't find a flood of high-end retailers like many international airports have, but there are plenty of Hudson News outlets and similar stores for you to stock up on anything you may need before your flight.

Airport hotels

If your layover at O'Hare involves an overnight stay, it doesn't get any more convenient than the Hilton Chicago O'Hare airport, which goes for between 29,000 and 50,000 points for a free night, and often sells for about $200. The hotel connects directly to all the domestic terminals via underground walkways, making it unbeatable in terms of convenience.

international travel o'hare

If you're looking for a cheaper option or are loyal to a different brand, you'll find dozens of hotels 5-10 minutes away from the airport, most of which offer complimentary shuttle access. Just note that you'll be on the highway for part of that drive, and as anyone who has ever flown through Chicago knows, what should be a 5 minute drive often ends up being 20+ so make sure to budget extra time before your flight.

Getting downtown

Traffic aside, the easiest way to get downtown from the airport is by calling an Uber or taxi. You'll find designated ride-share pickup zones on the departures level of most terminals, though if you're arriving at T5 you can get picked up on the arrivals level. O'Hare also has a dedicated stop on the CTA blue line which can be accessed from most terminals. It should take you about 40 minutes to get downtown, and this is the only guaranteed way to avoid the headache-inducing traffic jams.

Bottom line

Both American Airlines and United are heavily invested in their hubs at Chicago O'Hare, as evidenced by each carrier offering its top ground experience to premium passengers at the airport. Whether you have a short stop between flights or a bit more time to kill, there's plenty to do at O'Hare. If all else fails, you can always fall back on some pretty exciting plane spotting as much of the airport is angled to face the two main runways.

Airlines sign off on revamped plan for O’Hare rebuild, but express caution about the budget

C hicago’s two main airlines have signed off on the city’s proposed changes to a massive, delayed rebuild at O’Hare International Airport, clearing a path forward after months of negotiations.

In separate statements Friday afternoon, both United and American airlines said they supported the plan outlined by the city in early April to change the order of construction on a new Global Terminal and two nearby satellite concourses. Initially, the plan was to build the two satellite concourses first, which would have added gate space for airlines to use while aging Terminal 2 was rebuilt as a gleaming new Global Terminal, but under the April plan the city proposed moving the Global Terminal up in the construction order.

Under the current plan, United said, the city’s aviation department can move forward with construction on the first satellite concourse, while planning a phased construction of the Global Terminal. If enough money is left over, the aviation department would move forward with construction on the second satellite concourse and the tunnel connecting the two concourses, United said.

The two airlines, who are footing much of the construction bill, had pushed for the change in the order of work, seeking to ensure the new terminal wasn’t threatened by budget overruns. Their approval now sets the stage to move forward with a key piece of the airport rebuild , which has been behind schedule and mired in months of contentious negotiations as the carriers pushed back against rising construction costs.

“We are pleased that Mayor Johnson and his aviation department have put forth a phasing plan that will ensure that (project) funds are first spent on the mission-critical portions of the program — the O’Hare Global Terminal and Satellite 1,” United said in a statement. “The Global Terminal has always been the centerpiece of this program and the crucial piece needed to ensure Chicago maintains its status as a global hub. Under this new phasing plan, we can deliver the most impactful elements of the modernization project the quickest.”

American Airlines also praised the mayor and the new plan, saying it reflected a proposal to move forward “in a way that protects the competitiveness of O’Hare.”

“The path ahead will be challenging, and we’ll all need to continue working together to get this project completed within the allotted budget,” American said in a statement. “Keeping our customers, team and the enduring vitality of our Chicago hub at top of mind, we extend our steadfast commitment to working together with all stakeholders to deliver a modern airport that Chicago will be proud of – while keeping the project moving forward and vigilantly monitoring cost to preserve O’Hare’s status as an important connecting hub in our global network.”

The terminal work is the centerpiece of a broad overhaul of the airport, a crucial piece of the city’s economy and a hub in the nation’s air system, that was initially pegged at $8.5 billion when the airlines signed off on the overhaul in 2018. The terminal work was to feature a soaring, 2.2 million-square-foot Global Terminal, designed by a team led by architect Jeanne Gang, which would more than double the space of the current Terminal 2 and add additional gates. It would also allow travelers to move more seamlessly between domestic and international flights.

But costs, largely financed by city bonds backed by airline fees, ballooned, and the project fell significantly behind schedule. The airlines said at one point last year they had received a cost estimate that put the terminal work alone $1.5 billion over budget in 2018 dollars.

The proposal to rephase the order of construction on the Global Terminal and satellite concourses was initially blasted by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, who had worried that changing the order would mean the second satellite concourse could be indefinitely delayed or cut. But weeks later he changed course and gave the plan his vote of confidence , saying “we’re in a better place.”

“There’s been an effort to increase the conversation” he said at the time. “I think we have a proposal that will reach our goal of 25% increased capacity.”

Friday, Durbin and U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth praised the agreement reached between the airlines and the city. The two satellite concourses are “essential” for growth and modernization at the airport, and the project would expand gate capacity, their offices said.

“After months of volleying counter-offers and facing deadlock, we are relieved that the city of Chicago and the airlines have finally come to an agreement about the future of the Chicago O’Hare International Airport Terminal Project,” they said in a joint statement. “With both parties now in agreement, we can begin to take a major step forward on the project with a shared vision — one that allows O’Hare to not only maintain its world-class status, but to also modernize its terminals while leaving room to expand to meet the demands of travelers well into the future.”

Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office did not answer Tribune questions Friday about the latest project budget, when construction might begin, or whether any other changes had been floated. But in a statement, his office said it was “thrilled” to say the airlines had accepted the city’s proposal, and prioritizing the Global Terminal would “bring benefits to the traveling public sooner, while providing thousands of jobs and contracting opportunities to Chicago.”

“Today’s announcement is a major step forward in the growth of O’Hare – and the Chicago region – as a key hub for travelers from across the globe,” the statement said.

Earlier this week, the LaGrange-based Illinois Economic Policy Institute found completing the O’Hare project as initially planned could generate $18.4 billion in economic activity and create 95,000 jobs by 2033.

After construction is finished, the project, as planned, would also create 1,600 jobs, including 400 directly at the airport, and increase state tax revenue by $39 million and local tax revenue by $24 million, the report found.

But scaling back the scope of the project or delaying it further could affect those figures, IEPI economist Frank Manzo said.

“Scaling back or delaying work would not only potentially harm the region’s economy by reducing those impacts, but it could jeopardize O’hare’s status as the most connected airport in the world,” he said.

If any future changes in the scope of the project or budget overruns arise, the airlines would have to sign off under the terms of their 2018 agreement with the city.

Connection between Terminals

It is possible to make a connection between the national terminals and also with the main parking lot, through the Pedestrian Tunnel Level.

Terminal Transfer Bus (TTB) allows connection between Terminals 1 and 5 and from Terminal 3 and 5 (boarding pass required). It means, passengers connecting to a flight at gates M1-M40 in T5 can avoid existing and re-entering security. During the night, TTB is not working, so passengers will need to exit security and board the Airport Transit System (ATS), then be rescreened at a TSA checkpoint. Frequency: every 15 minutes. Hours: 11.30 am - 9.30 pm daily Bus stops: T1 (Gate B1) - T3 (Gate G17 - Gate K20), T5 (Gate M13)

The O'Hare Airport Transit System (ATS) is an automated people mover system with a 3 mile (4.8 km) long journey, which only takes ten minutes to complete the journey within the airport complex.

The fully automated free rail system transports passengers to and from Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5, as well as the Multi-Modal Rental Car Facility (MMF), Rental Cars, Economy Parking F, Kiss 'n' Fly, Pace buses and Metro.

5 are the stations served in T1, T2, T3, T5 and the new one in the MMF
