What’s the Best Time for Iran Desert Tours?

The best time for Iran desert tours is October, November & December. Autumn gives you real-time adventure in Iran’s deserts. However, April and early May could still be good times for Iran desert trekking. Even though the days will be warmer and more prolonged than in the Fall, it is still bearable to experience most of the Iran desert tours. Summer and winter are usually not suitable times for Iran desert tours as the warmth, and the cold of the desert can be excruciating and unbearable during those seasons. If you plan to visit Iran during summer, Iran trekking tours through the mountains of this land could be a better choice for that time of the year.

iran desert tours

Best Destinations for Iran Desert Tours

The two main desert regions of Iran are the Lut desert and Dasht-e Kavir, or the central desert. The Lut desert has been registered as a natural UNESCO attraction. Long periods of strong wind have caused the creation of the spectacular platform in both of these Iran deserts. The placement of villages nearby these desserts goes back more than 7000 years ago, meaning unique lifestyles have been formed around these deserted areas since ancient times. We have gathered a selection of the best Iran desert spots for you to visit during your Iran desert tour. The variety and uniqueness of landscape and scenery in each of these sites have made them the best locations for you to explore during your adventure and Iran Safari.

iran desert tours

Varzaneh Desert

This desert is an ancient central desert in Isfahan province, still showing evidence of its 5000-year-old civilization. Sandboarding has become very popular in the Varzaneh desert over the past years because Varzaneh dunes are really high and mostly steep, compared to other sand dune deserts not only in Iran but also in the middle east.

iran desert tours

Shahdad Kalouts

The mysterious formations called yardangs or kalouts that make the Lut desert extremely important as a natural UNESCO world heritage are spotted in this area. Also, remember the hottest point on earth? Gandom Beryan is located 80 kilometers from the village of Shahdad, accessible through our kalout desert tours.

iran desert tours

Mesr Desert

This desert is a part of the extensive central desert in Iran called Dasht-e Kavir. There is sand as far as eyes can see. This desert is surrounded by quite fascinating villages as well, such as Garmeh. The beautiful palm trees, bushes, and sand hills have created spectacular scenery in these villages.

iran desert tours

Maranjab Desert

Golden sand dunes, unique vegetation, and an amazing Salt Lake are only a few elements that make the Maranjab desert quite an extraordinary destination for an Iran desert tour. The proximity of this desert to the capital city of Tehran makes it even more popular among desert lovers.

iran desert tours

Abouzeidabad Desert

One of the most popular deserts for off-roading, also in close proximity to Tehran, is Abouzeidabad. This dessert is also surrounded by historical sites such as the underground village of Nushabad, which dates back to 1500 years ago. It’s considered a marvel of ancient architecture and engineering.

Professional Desert Tour Guides

We first started our own journey as tour guides, as well. Therefore, we know how much your guide’s personality can influence the quality of your experience. We also understand what essential attributes make the best guides who can create the most memorable experiences for travelers. Also, based on our experiences, we’ve learned what expectations tourists usually have from their guides. All in all, we have chosen guides who share these three key qualities besides their own unique characteristics.

iran desert tours

Local & Knowledgeable

When it comes to Iran desert tours, your guide should know both the ecology and the route of the desert well enough to ensure your peace of mind. Our guides are locals with excellent knowledge of every aspect of the site they are guiding you through.

Trustworthy and Reliable

Our guides are reliable, ensuring you have access to resources you’d need during your Iran desert tour. While they are equipped with first aid kit, and all the needed equipments, they are also trustworthy enough to find solutions on a rim even in case of unexpected circumstances.

Flexible & Adaptable

We choose our guides to have flexible characters for all of our Iran tours. Therefore, they’ll consider your preferences and only partake in activities you are more interested in. They match your schedule based on how you feel during the trip.

How Are We Responsible in Our Iran Desert Tours?

The deserts of Iran are mainly untouched land being slowly explored by tourists. While that can significantly benefit the local communities, it could also mean we need to have the plan to preserve these beautiful landscapes and protect them from long-term environmental harm. During our Iran desert tours, we ensure to reduce our footprint by leaving the least amount of human traces behind. We also ensure to do all of our shopping for food, water, and supplies from nearby local villages, which helps the surrounding villages thrive economically. We also believe that IranAmaze Iran travel agency’s knowledgeable guides have a strong role in being critical sources of environmental education. They will make sure to discuss and let you know about all the habitants and the ecology of the desert you are visiting. Therefore, you not only preserve them during your trip but also have the added knowledge that can be passed on to your friends, family, and kids who might set foot on the desert land one day. We take responsibility for ensuring that we advocate for responsible travel, whether before, during, or after your trip. For more information, check out the tour packages’ responsible travel page and responsible travel section.

We’ll ensure to have a comprehensive session with you before going on the trekking routes to discuss tips regarding responsibility. These tips will include but not get limited to Iran’s etiquette and dress code. We also explore environmental worries about the Damavand region and the local community guidelines, which we would need to follow to ensure a less negative impact is placed on traditional communities.

Furthermore, we try to preserve the environment and diminish our footprint in nature. Not only we don’t leave any waste in nature, but also, we encourage others not to do so. Also, we try to use the minimum amount of plastic on our trips. Besides environmental considerations, we respect nomad people and their way of living while we meet them during trekking. For more information, check out the responsible travel page and responsible travel section in tour packages.

Also, we facilitate cultural interactions for our travelers. This will not only provide more in-depth experiences for them but also make sure these interactions are culturally appropriate. Furthermore, our environmental considerations help our tours to be more sustainable. For more information, check out the Iran responsible travel page and responsible travel section in tour packages.

Anyone enchanted by the desert’s charm, will not be released until the end of his life.

This famous phrase was uttered by Dr. Alfons Gabrie l – a late Austrian geographer and traveler. He had made numerous trips to Iran deserts and his most famous travelogue, “ Crossing the Deserts of Iran ” has been recently published. In Iran, there are different deserts, most of which are located in the center of the country. What do you know about Iran desert tours ? which deserts are suitable for tourism?

The desert ,  Sahara ,  Kavir  or  Kalout are scientifically different, and their differentiations depend on altitude, annual precipitation, the type of vegetation, amount of salt present in the soil and natural formations. In Iran, there are all types of deserts whose sand dunes, salt rivers, salt lakes, desert plants, birds and wildlife, attract thousands of tourists depending on the regional and climatic conditions.

Camels-in-Desert

Iran Desert Tours

As mentioned, due to the hot dry climate of Iran, there are several desert plains in different parts of this vast country, so that a quarter of Iran is dedicated to desert areas. It should be noted that each of these deserts have different features and unique beauties in their hearts that will undoubtedly surprise any visitor with their unique landscape. The well-known desert areas of Iran are divided in two main regions; both are among the hottest in the world:

Dasht-e Kavir Desert Lut Desert

These two vast deserts consist of sub-regional deserts that have recently become popular tourist destinations. Desert lovers usually head to these areas in spring, fall and winter seasons.

Mesr Desert

One of the most popular deserts in Iran is  Mesr desert of Isfahan province, which is also called the Sand Sea and is 700 km away from Tehran. This desert with its natural beauties fascinates every tourist. The availability of entertainments such as camping, Night star watching, off-roading, motorcycling, camel riding, and dune travers, etc. makes traveling to Mesr desert more exciting.

Maranjab Desert

Maranjab desert is located on the outskirts of Aran & Bidgol town in Isfahan province and is one of the most popular attractions in Kashan. This is the most visited desert in Iran due to its beautiful night sky, high sand dunes, rich vegetation and fauna. Attractions of this desert include walking on the sands, visiting the historical well of Dastkan and Shah Abbasi caravanserai, a visit to the salt lake, off-roading, and so on.

You can camp in this desert or stay at Shah Abbasi caravanserai and spend the night in the heart of a mesmerizing desert.

Rig-e Jenn Desert

Rig-e Jenn (also Rig-e Jinn ) is one of the spooky and mysterious deserts of Iran, which is located in the south of Semnan , southeast of Garmsar , west of Jandagh , north of Anarak and east of the Kavir national reserves.

It is interesting to know that many stories and legends about this desert have spread among the locals, all of which have been very effective in making it so popular.

Iran 4×4 Desert Safari

Iran is well known for her deserts and there is good reason for that. Iranian deserts are one of the most beautiful and varied deserts in the world. There are 2 large and separate desert systems and in many ways quite different from each other.   Dasht-e Kavir desert  also known as the central desert  (Kavir-e Markazi)  is in north- central part of Iran with 800 km length and 500 km width, total surface area of about 77,600 km².   Dasht-e Lut desert  (Kavir-e Lut) is the other desert system located in south east of the country with 480 km length and 320 km width registered on the list of UNESCO heritage site in 2016. One can still find people who live a relatively traditional life with extremely modest facilities, making their living mostly off the land. Some even have no electricity, but they like it and is a personal choice.  This is becoming an increasing rare phenomenon in the world. The famed  Silk Road   of course crossed a good portion of these deserts going from east to west.  As a result one can visit and explore a lot of these historical landmarks like castles, caravanserais , old mosques, Zoroastrian fire temples and historical villages. There are still some camels around. Although they have lost their main purpose for carrying people and goods through the water-less landscape, they are still part of the eco system and many desert dwelling rural people like to keep a few. So you can definitely choose to ride them if you wish.

Kalout Dasht-e Lut Desert Iran

There are a few protected areas and surprisingly, a variety of wild life dwell in these lands. During the short spring, a carpet of wild desert flowers cover portions of the land. Migratory birds fly over in certain times of year and in the right season one can see some spectacular bird movement across the sky. Dasht-e Lut  is one of the driest and hottest places on the planet. Lut desert contains salt lakes, extreme landscapes, gigantic rock formations and some of the tallest sand dunes in the world. There is flexibility and a variety of choices which we offer for those passionate about a desert sojourn. In both locations, you can join short or long 10-day trekking tours offered by Adventure Iran . There is also cycling through oases and villages deep in the heart of the desert. Safaris using 4×4 vehicles is the next option for those looking for easier sightseeing opportunities, as well as epic expedition style, thorough coverage of much more ground up to comprehensive journey through both deserts. The best time to come depends on where you would like to visit and which type of activities you would like to do. In general, March to May and October to November are best times to visit Dasht-e Kavir. October to April is the season for Dasht-e Lut, although the prime time for this desert is November and December. In each season, Adventure Iran has a few small group tours with fixed departure dates for active desert adventure tours and you can join them or ask us your desired date for your private tour.

Iran Desert

Iran desert tours, travel to iran.

Some people love deserts for their peace and calmness, some others like them for safari and off-road activities, and some for taking amazing photos. whether you are looking for an adventure tour to Iran or you are just a lover of nature who appreciate the golden sand dune of deserts, Iran offers a variety of desserts and travelers can enjoy the infinite ocean of sand dunes in Iran desert tour.

As one of the most captivating Iran deserts, Lut is a UNESCO-listed natural attraction in Iran. Here is simply the hottest place on the Earth surface that Nasa has ever registered; 71ºC! It is absolutely an abiotic zone; no living creature can endure here. Walking among these structures, you feel like walking on the surface of Mars while if you are lucky enough, you may hear the voice of wind blowing through them. That is the only voice to be heard in the endless silence of the desert!

Rig-e Jen is another desert in the central part of Iran which is one of the most mysterious Iran deserts. Many travelers never returned from this wide emptiness which has caused great fear among people and made the desert to be called the “Bermuda triangle of Iran”.

The diversity of Iran deserts can fulfill travelers of various tastes if you are tempted to feel the warm and soft sands under your feet, you are welcomed to the land of wonders.

To say that my trip to Iran was amazing would be an understatement. Tap Persia was the best agency that I could have chosen, they organized everything perfectly for me, my guide Mojtaba was kind and knowledgeable and honestly, I have no adequate words to describe how beautiful my trip was. I spent 8 days covering many cities and came back wanting more! Thank you Rasool and Mojtaba for your kindness and most excellent customer service! I have every intention of coming back to beautiful Iran again! Best, Nasseema Visited May 2022 Tripadvisor

I got TAP Persia from TripAdvisor. This was my first experience and first visit to Iran with my wife. When I contacted this company through one of this company guy named Rasool, I found him very positive and true. He introduced me an other nice person named Shorab, who was our trip organiser. Our visa was done in 2 days with the help of nice lady Sara. Our whole plan was done as İ discussed with Shorab. Our all hotels in 4 different cities, internal transportation i.e VIP bus, domestic flight and 5 star sleeper train were booked by this guy. We didn't find a single problem anywhere. Special thanks to this guy Shorab. Shorab invited us in his office in Isfahan and served us with tea and other items. We met there the whole team of Tap Persia. We found them hardworking, honest with their work, sincere and busy to serve their clients as much as they can. We spent some hours with Shorab in Isfahan and enjoyed with his hospitality. İ highly recommend this company to all those who wants to visit Iran without any hassles and worries. Our best wishes and prayers are always with this company and all their workers. Such an amazing Iranian travel agency. I have found tappersia on Instagram while searching for things about Iran. This 15 days vacation was something I really wanted to do. How amazing this country and people are. Tappersia is what every foreigner needs, to go to Iran. Good and professional staff, very nice, friendly and helpful all the time. Ara was our first tourist guide in Tehran. He was very nice, polite and kind. Always worried about what we would like to see and about our preferences. He has a good historic and cultural background and he is excellent explaining everything about Iran's culture and history. Ebrahim, our second guide. He is an excellent, kind and sweet person. He has that special feeling about what people need to know and like to see. We immediately felt a strong bond with him. Although he is a very nice and funny person he is also serious and professional when he speaks about Iran and its cultural heritage and history. He did everything to make our stay as nice as possible. Not only he was an excellent driver but an amazing tour guide. We will recommend him to every tourist going to Iran. He could read our minds and understand exactly what we want and what our preferences were. Ali was our third tour guide. He took us to the Kerman desert. In our first contact, we immediately realize he was very good at his job. He also worried about our food preferences and allergies. He showed us all the beauties of the desert - precious peal hidden in Iran. Such a fantastic and professional guide as well. We had a wonderful dinner together. We will remember it. Last but not least Moji. He took us to Persepolis, Necropolis and Pasargard. What an amazing way to end our staying in Iran. He was wonderful telling us about how everything started in these beautiful and ancient places. We could see how thrill he was telling us about all the history. Finally a special thank to Tappersia for every single moment we spent in Iran. These have been for sure one of the most wonderful vacations we could have had. Thank you so much to all of you. Most relaxed holiday thanks to TAP Persia. We came in a troubled time so booked everything through TAP Persia just so that we would feel a bit more secure but the experience was beyond expectations. I have never had a more relaxed holiday. Everything was already booked for us; we had a private car picking us up every time we changed places, offering tours and stops in between all this on a very affordable price and always being there for every question we had. Totally recommended!   Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

I had an amazing time due to the amazing service provided by TAP Persia. Since the first contact Maryam and Rasool were super helpful, willing to explain everything we needed and replying in a very effective manner at all times. I couldn't have asked for a better experience and I strongly recommend them to everyone that wants to have a relaxed yet fun and cultural experience. Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

Before applying for a visa through TAP Persia, I looked up review's to see if they were trustworthy. The many good reviews almost seemed to be good to be true. But after experiencing their service first hand, I can say that they truly deserve the rating. After payment issues, they went ahead with the process anyways. Without a guarantee or anything. A show of faith from their side shows a great mentality if you ask me. So I'm glad I chose them to arrange the Iranian visa/code. Visited Feb 2020 Tripadvisor

Best travel agency you can find. I travelled for three months in and had the support of TAP Persia at every step of the way. They took care of my visa, my tourist (credit) card and registered my phone after a month. During my travels I could always call or text them about any issue I had. They booked several bus, train or flight tickets for me on short notice. I also got to meet them in person when I was in Isfahan and became really good friends with them. TAP Persia is the best, most professional and friendliest tourist office you can find. You‘ll be in the best hands and won’t have to worry about a thing. I hope to see them again soon! TAP Persia helped me so much on my first adventure in Iran. I didn’t know where to start, but a friend recommended TAP Persia. Before my arrival staff was on call to help me when my flight was delayed. They were flexible to change the “original” route so I could visit the desert and everything I wanted to see without hustle and at a really good price. I did this on a quite small budget. All guides were great! And when I arrived to Isfahan I went to see the the office of TAP Persia and the wonderful people behind it. I’ll be back soon! Visited Nov 2019 Tripadvisor

Over the years and despite preferring to do things by myself, I’ve relied and many tour companies on some locations. I’ve chosen TAP Persia and I was not proven wrong. 🙂 paying a lot of money in advance is something I dread, but did. My trust was never misplaced. They helped me with my visa application (that I did in Istanbul), all of my in between cities transportation, hotels and a few guides. The hotels were amazing, the drivers drove good and safe, always kind; the guides super knowledgeable. The few changes I asked for on the ground (a guide where I hadn’t booked one, changes in itinerary, extra space in last train) were done with care and great effort. Never had to beg or insist. I would totally recommend using their services. You are always in contact with them by multiple ways and their representatives are all really nice! Iran is a wonderful destination and TAP Persia does it justice. Visited Nov 2019 Tripadvisor
