About Wilderness Safaris

Company size, introduction to wilderness.

Thirty years ago the founders of Wilderness fell in love with remote and wild places in Africa. They realised that many of these places were not getting the attention they deserved.

The initial Wilderness dream was to conserve these places by enabling people to visit them and earn a return for the business and its employees at the same time. This was not a grand or complex idea but an important one. Wilderness started off by offering "journeys and experiences to discerning globally caring travelers", achieved through the employment of a responsible tourism model.

Wilderness began operating in Botswana and then spread out into the rest of southern Africa. Over time, the business has evolved into a specialist luxury safari operation with 58 different safari camps and lodges, comprising a total of 1 008 beds, in eight SADC countries and hosting in excess of 30 000 guests per annum.

OVERVIEW OF THE BUSINESS

Wilderness Holdings is a Botswana-based Company, listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange and with a secondary inward listing on the JSE Limited. The Company acts as the investment holding vehicle for the business.

The business is currently supported by international and local markets and has a value proposition of "selling original experiences in the pure wilderness". We sell these experiences to the consumers, our guests, largely through the travel trade, our clients. The Group has a stable of Wilderness brand which are supported by a flying business.

WILDERNESS VISION

The Wilderness vision is to be Africa's leading ecotourism organisation, creating life-changing journeys in order to build sustainable conservation economies and inspire positive action.

WILDERNESS VALUES

Values provide a moral compass and framework for decision-making and day to day operations within an organisation. - Leadership: The courage to innovate in shaping a better Africa

Authenticity: We always remain loyal to the Wilderness way

Integrity: We are respectful, honest and ethical

Fun: We enjoy making a difference and changing lives

Accountability: We take responsibility for our actions

Commitment: Our dedication to the environment and our guests is unwavering

WILDERNESS BLUEPRINT

Commerce: We create life-changing wilderness journeys for our guests and clients and work closely with our Government partners, conservation and community stake holders and shareholders, to ensure the ongoing financial success and sustainability of our business.

Conservation: We aim to maximize the positive impact of our operations on biodiversity conservation and to build and operate our camps in the most eco-friendly way possible to minimize our negative impact.

Community: People are at the heart of our business. We hope to provide opportunities and growth to inspire our staff and external communities to learn about nature, love and conserve it and to realise the importance of ecotourism.

Culture: We respect and promote our unique Wilderness culture, as well as those of all our employees and neighbouring rural communities. We hope to positively impact a global culture of respect and care for the environment.

THE IT DEPARTMENT

The IT department is partly based in our Joburg office in Sandton, and our Cape Town office is in Steenberg Business Park in Tokai. We are currently hiring for our team in Tokai.

We are a small development team, with a few staff members with a large amount of development and project experience, as well as a few more junior members. We are in the fifth year of an ambitious and exciting project. The project has proved successful but still has a long way to go to reach our intended goals. We are therefore looking to add people to our team with the necessary attitude, energy and enthusiasm to help us move forward. We have a relaxed working environment and like to have fun, but we are also prepared to put in the hours when necessary, and also work outside of our normal job description on an ad-hoc basis, such as assisting with support or training.

We work in a very agile environment. As a small team working closely together we dream, design, and develop together, as well as maintain, support and train. Releases to production generally occur on a daily basis. The business we are serving is complex, involves a large number exceptions to the standard processes, and is fast paced and constantly changing. A significant amount of the work we do involves challenging existing processes and looking for ways to improve them.

We are looking for a few additions to our team. We do need to add to our technical skills, but we are also looking for candidates who have business analysis and design skills, in addition to some technical know-how. The ability to understand data and perform data-modelling is a big plus.

Our primary development tool is Mendix. It is a model driven rapid application development tool, which allows us to operate in an agile manner. Please go to www.Mendix.com for further information.

Hiring process

There are three of us who will interview the candidates. There may be a couple iterations but we will try keep this to a minimum. The prospective employee once chosen will be on a 3 month probation period. We would like to contact past employers for references. If not possible for any reason, we may need to set some basic tasks.

Well here is some cool news…

As of July 12, 2018 Wilderness Safaris, famed for awesome safari camps such as Mombo and Bisate, has been bought out by a number of very wealthy investors including Bono, Sir Richard Branson, Luarene Jobs (Steve Jobs’ widow), and many others … the list of investors reads like a who’s who in the world of philanthropy, tech, and rock n’ roll!

Here is the full press release:

The iconic safari company has announced that it has sold 58% of its shares to two groups, one of which has a Founders Board that reads like a Who’s Who of the world’s billionaire philanthropists.

Wilderness Safaris grew from a tiny outfit founded by bush guides Colin Bell and Chris McIntyre in Botswana in 1983 – and then joined by the late Russel Friedman – into a tourism and conservation behemoth spanning eight countries: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Seychelles.

Today (July 12, 2018) it announced that it was selling 34% of its shares to the social impact investment fund, The Rise Fund, managed by the giant US equity group, TPG Growth. This represents a total of just over 80-million ordinary shares.

In a separate announcement, Wilderness Holdings said it was selling a further 24% of ordinary shares – just over 60-million – to African Wildlife Holdings, an affiliate of FS Investors. The shares bought by FS Investors were the entire holdings previously held by Jochen Zeitz, Puma SE, and Kering.

The shares acquired by The Rise Fund were the entire holding held by Wine Investments Limited, described on the Wilderness Holdings website as “a subsidiary of The Travel Corporation, an international travel group with over 25 global award-winning brands owned by the Tollman family and which also controls Cullinan Holdings Limited.”

While little information is available about African Wildlife Holdings, The Rise Fund’s Founder’s Board reads like a Who’s Who of the world of philanthropy, tech, a bit of rock ‘n roll and industry.

They are: Bill McGlashan, David Bonderman and Jim Coulter, founding partners of TPG Capital; Jeff Skoll, first president of eBay; rock star Bono; philanthropist Lynne Benioff, wife of flamboyant tech billionaire, Marc Benioff ( Salesforce.com ); British billionaire, Sir Richard Branson (Virgin); Mellody Hobson, vice chair of Starbucks, former chair of the board of directors of DreamWorks Animation and wife of Hollywood director-producer, George Lucas; Reid Hoffman, co-founder and executive chairman of LinkedIn; Sudanese-British philanthropist and telecoms billionaire, Mo Ibrahim; Indian Mahindra conglomerate chairperson, Anand Mahindra; philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple founder, Steve Jobs; billionaire philanthropist and founder of eBay, Pierre Omidyar; and Unilever CEO, Paul Polman.

Chief Executive of Wilderness Holdings, Keith Vincent, said “Wilderness has always been dedicated to a purpose-driven approach based on our 4Cs sustainability ethos of Commerce, Community, Culture and Conservation.

“We welcome our newest shareholder, The Rise Fund, and are proud to be standing shoulder to shoulder with such like-minded individuals. We are [now] even more committed to our founding vision: to conserve and restore Africa’s wilderness and wildlife by creating life-changing journeys and inspiring positive action.”

Chief Executive of The Rise Fund, Bill McGlashan said “this is a great opportunity to partner with an important Africa-grown company to help them expand their business while building on their long track record and history of sustainability and environmental and social impact across the continent.”

Mike Stone, Chief Investment Officer of The Rise Fund said “this investment marks a major milestone in the relationship we have built with Wilderness Holdings. Keith and his leadership team ranks as one of the very strongest in Africa, and Wilderness Holdings has the potential to create significant environmental and economic impact on the continen

A career in the great outdoors offers an exhilarating departure from the traditional 9-5 office job . If you’re someone who feels most at home surrounded by nature, a wilderness job might be the perfect path for you. Whether you’re looking to transition from a desk job, seeking short-term outdoor work, or starting a brand-new career, the world of wilderness jobs has something to offer. To embark on this journey, all you need is a passion for the natural world and an eagerness to explore new horizons. But how do you go about finding these jobs in the first place, and once you’ve identified a potential opportunity, what steps should you take to secure it?

Types of Wilderness Jobs

Working with people.

Interacting with a variety of people and providing excellent customer service is a huge part of many wilderness jobs. If you enjoy interacting with others and have a desire to share the wonders of the natural world, check out some of the jobs with a heavy focus on working with people:

  • Wilderness Guide
  • Outdoor Educator
  • Park Ranger
  • Ski Instructor
  • Raft Guide
  • Retail Associate

Working with Nature

If you prefer solitude and the company of nature itself, look into roles focused on land management, conservation, or scientific research. Many of these positions require extended time outdoors, physical labor, or specialized skills, but the tradeoff is a quiet and beautiful workspace. Check out some of the jobs with a serene outdoor office:

  • Fish & Wildlife Technician
  • Outdoor Photographer
  • Trail Maintenance Worker
  • Forest Firefighter
  • Park Maintenance
  • Travel Writer

Working with a Business

Many outdoor companies also offer traditional administrative positions, with opportunities in marketing, sales, event planning, human resources, and accounting. These roles allow you to merge your passion for the outdoors with previous skills and experience; helping outdoor brands thrive. This can be the perfect way to transition from your current role to a new industry without starting from scratch.

Before you Start

1. Lifestyle

Working in the wilderness often means embracing a lifestyle that’s markedly different from traditional life. Think about how living in remote areas, working seasonally, or enduring challenging weather conditions aligns with your personality and life goals. Working in a wilderness setting often requires being away from home for days at a time. Do you have pets, children, family, or friends that rely on you being home each night and available on weekends? How will being away for up to a week at a time affect your relationships? How will you deal with seasonal changes in schedule and workload? Wanting stability in your life doesn’t mean that there isn’t a wilderness job perfect for you, but carefully consider the potential changes to your current lifestyle.

2. Personal Adventures

Before seeking employment, embark on your own wilderness adventures! This will not only deepen your connection to nature but also provide valuable experiences and skills that employers look for. In addition, keep a “trip log” to track days and nights that you have spent camping, hiking, or otherwise recreating in the outdoors. This can be a helpful addition to your resume and will showcase your relevant experience. This can be as simple as a chart like what is listed below:

 3. Qualifications

While many wilderness jobs do not require specific degrees, having certifications, and relevant experience can be a major factor in improving your prospects. Many jobs will offer some form of training in lieu of, or in addition to specific certifications, but a good start for any wilderness job is wilderness medical training and Leave No Trace courses. These courses also increase your preparedness for personal adventures. Here are some organizations that provide certifications for outdoor careers:

Wilderness Medicine

  • American Red Cross

Outdoor Ethics

  • Leave No Trace (LNT)

Watersports

  • American Canoe Association (ACA)

Winter Sports

  • Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) & American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI)
  • American Avalanche Association (AAA)

Climbing and Mountain Guiding

  • Professional Climbing Instructors Association (PCIA)
  • American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA)

How to Find Wilderness Jobs

outdoor professional looks through binoculars

Now that you’re prepared, it’s time to start your job hunt. Here’s how to uncover those elusive wilderness opportunities:

Online job boards like CoolWorks , OutdoorIndustryJobs , and Conservation Job Board are excellent resources for finding wilderness job postings. You can filter results by location, type of work, and season.

Join Facebook groups related to outdoor jobs and wilderness careers. These groups often feature job postings and provide a platform to connect with like-minded individuals.

Company Websites

Visit the websites of outdoor companies, national parks, and conservation organizations. Many post job openings on their career pages.

Networking is invaluable. Reach out to friends and acquaintances in the industry. They might know of job openings or be willing to introduce you to key contacts.

How to Secure Wilderness Jobs

Park service vehicle drives into the distance

Finding job listings is just the first step. Here’s how to navigate the hiring process and land your dream wilderness job:

Prepare Your Resume

Tailor your resume to highlight relevant skills, experiences, and qualifications. Emphasize any certifications or personal experiences that make you a strong candidate. Often, highlighting your skills is more important than extensive experience so be sure to list all the interpersonal and “soft” skills that you have honed through other roles.

Federal Jobs

  • If you are interested in working for a government agency, like the National Park Service or the U.S. Forest Service, check out USAJOBS , the official job site for federal positions. Federal job applications often require much more extensive applications than private organizations. Resumes can be over 10 pages long and include everything from high school awards to tenure at every past job. Be sure to meet all application requirements and be very explicit in stating how you meet each of the stated job requirements and qualifications .

Ace the Interview

When you secure an interview, be ready to discuss your passion for the outdoors, your adaptability, and your commitment to the role. Interview questions are often based on how well you align with the organization’s values, and what you would do in hypothetical situations. Being personable and excited goes a long way! Here are some examples of common interview questions:

  • Describe a time that you have helped to resolve conflicts in a group that you were a part of?
  • What strategies will you use to lead groups of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and personalities?
  • You are on day 3 of a wilderness trip and upon arriving at camp, you find that the stream that you planned to get water from is dry. What would you do?
