An almost classic point&click adventure Classic inventory puzzles, exploration, somehow quirky side characters? At this point, the comparison with popular classics like Monkey Island or Grim Fandango usually comes up, but we deliberately don't want to do that. Because although we have many elements of games from the good old Lucas Arts era, such as long puzzle chains or even the one or other quirky character (quirky characters on a deserted planet, how is that supposed to work? Be curious), we also find elements of modern adventure games, such as the lively environments of the Amanita Games works (e.g. Machinarium) or comfort functions, such as a hotspot display or optional help functions. And no, there won't be any dead ends or player deaths either. But enough of the comparisons, because our project also has one or two ideas of its own up its sleeve, which can be seen in our feature list:

The game is completely hand painted. each character, each object and scenery is first analog painted with acrylic paint on wood, then digitized and optimized on the graphics tablet. this gives the game a completely unique look, an ai as a commenting and sometimes helping companion (but don't expect it to agree with everything you do and sometimes it can be a bit condescending)., a character that changes throughout the game: the journey that is the gameplay will leave its mark on our brave android., a vivid environment with lots of hand-drawn background animations., an easy mode for adventure novices that simplifies puzzling., a lexicon that expands throughout the game and includes properties of plants and animals. this should not serve as a mere gimmick, but will be important in solving puzzles., over 50 hand-painted scenes and an estimated playtime of 6 to 8 hours..

Autumn’s Journey Review

The anime art style within video games is as familiar as game types such as team deathmatch or capture the flag. From JRPGs to dating sims, this visual choice can harbour a multitude of different genres and experiences (on various ends of the quality spectrum). Autumn’s Journey stops short of providing you with any kind of definitive experience at all, producing something which is more of a picture book than a video game.

You play as Auralee, a young woman who aspires to be a knight like her mother. She protects her small town of Berri from bandits, raiders, and monsters alike, but must journey further from home than ever before when Kerr, a brash and angsty dragonkind trapped in a human body, is thrust in her path. Together, with the help of the meek Ilmari (Kerr’s supposed observer), they must find the means to break the curse and return them both to their own realm.

Autumn's Journey Nintendo Switch Gameplay Screenshot

The game itself plays out over a relatively short two-to-three hours, but simply calling it a game is doing this title a disservice. There’s surprisingly no gameplay to speak of. You click through static images with accompanying text, as the conversation and story progress without any real interaction needed from the player. Auralee rarely ever requires you to make a choice about what response she should have, with the game only giving you this interactive option seven times across the whole game.

This supposed visual novel is extremely light on interactions of any kind, and in these cases, the story should be both engaging and unique to hook the player and justify their time. Autumn’s Journey sadly accomplishes neither. The first-person narrative often feels stilted and a little cheap. Conversations don’t flow like they’re coming from real people, and moments of humour are regularly over-explained, insulting the player’s ability to connect the dots. The lack of player agency was the biggest blow this title could provide, even by visual novel standards. You never feel like you’re a part of the story, only really ever watching it play out from a distance.

Autumn's Journey Nintendo Switch Gameplay Screenshot

To say the game is part-voice acted is over-generous.  Autumn’s Journey contains a handful of repeated barks which are recycled throughout the brief runtime. These range from very short grunts to three-to-five-word sentences. Backgrounds are also repeated, with very few characters deemed important enough to even get an illustration and most remaining as just a name and text box. On more than one occasion, the name of characters didn’t even fit the confines of the box the developers provided it, going for a one size fits all approach which betrayed the quality of the overall title. Even the singular real antagonist is left faceless.

In terms of controls, the game can be played entirely passively by setting it into ‘auto’ mode. The text cycles itself, clicking through the conversation and giving you ample time to read the sentences being presented to you. This completely hands-off approach removes the player from the equation entirely, but may prevent repetitive strain injury hammering the A button. With the ability to go back to the last panel at any time with the L button, this may be the best way to play should you miss something.

Autumn's Journey Nintendo Switch Gameplay Screenshot

All in all, Autumn’s Journey may provide very limited enjoyment if you’re either short on time, or just need a stress-free outlet to unwind after a hard week. Its OpenDyslexic accessibility is to be commended, but finding much else to praise within this short and hollow adventure is a difficult task.

Autumn's Journey £4.99

Autumn’s Journey is a mercifully short jaunt into a fictional anime-inspired world. With a narrative on the grim end of the quality spectrum, and no gameplay to really speak of, this title should be one to avoid for most.

Fall Devotions

journey of autumn

Fall – to lose the old, to have its proper place.  This is just part of the many definitions of what the dictionary says “fall” is.   What is crazy is that the dictionary is talking about fall like ‘I fell down’, not fall like ‘the season’ and yet how appropriate the definition is.

I love fall!!  The color change, the weather change, the smell change…..its about change.  But to change means that something must go.

As I sit here looking out the window with massive trees all around my back yard, I see it happening right now.  Leaves falling. What was once a tree deep in rich green, then a tree with vibrant shades of red and orange, now is soon becoming a tree that will be empty.  Nothing left but the branches.  I guess our human side finds that sad and we wish the color stayed, we think the only thing that makes the tree beautiful is the colorful leaves …why does it have to be so bare but that’s a sign of what is to come.

But for every beginning there is an end and for every ending there is a new beginning.  What I find amazing is that those trees still stand.  Those branches still reach out and upward.  Not like my plants in the front of my house that have to be cut back and will re-grow from their roots next spring.  Those trees still stand. There is beauty in the strength of those branches.

This is such a picture of what Jesus does in our lives.  We go through all kinds of seasons.  Some are seasons of hard times, some loneliness, seasons of loss or other things such as financial hardships.  And those seasons change us.  We have seasons that are bright and beautiful and rich in life.  Then we have seasons that He allows things in our life to enter so that we don’t remain the same.  But through all those seasons He is telling us let go and let Me.  Let go and let me show you what I can do.  Let go and let me show you what I can teach you…  There is strength in your branches with Me.  We have to let go grow a new perspective.

Is 43: 18-19   “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.  Behold I am doing a new thing: now it springs forth , do not perceive it?  It will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the dessert.”

The weight is too heavy for you to carry and still look up.  We cannot continue in our walk with Jesus and never let go.  We must go through these seasons so that we continue to learn to surrender our control and in the process we desire to be more like Him, to trust Him more, to fall in love with Him more.   He did not create us to still look the same this season as the next season. The Bible is clear on that.

I Peter 2: 2   “Like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you grow in respect to salvation”

I Corinthians 13: 11   “When I was a child , I used to speak like a child , think like a child, reason like a child: when I became a  man, I did away with childish things.”

Total surrender is hard.  But that is because total surrender means giving up control of our hearts, our souls and our minds.  When we control our heart, our heart begins to lose heart for the things of Jesus. When we control the depths of our souls we control the wounds and the spaces that are not yet His.  And when we control our minds, we allow fear, anxiety, shame to invade and soon we believe what we are thinking instead of resting on what our Father says is true.

Luke 10: 27 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind…”

We cannot hold on to parts of us and say we have surrendered. God wants all of us.  God wants us to let go of the things that are holding us.  When we do and those things fall… and new life comes from it. Change happens in us and through us. He reminds us that He is still there standing strong and He still holding us up, much like the tree and the branches.  He says let go of it and I will hold you.

Isaiah 41: 10 “Fear not , for I am with you, be  not dismayed , for I am your God: I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous hand.”

God knows the depths of your world.  He knows the depths of your hurt, the depths of your fear, the depths of your insecurities,  the depths of your loss but He promises if you let it go He will bring new life and you will be a vessel ready to be used by your creator .

I Peter 5: 6, 10  “Humble yourselves , therefore, under the  mighty hand of God so that in proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you …and the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you.”

We cannot accept the gift of salvation and then do it our way with our limits, holding on to the parts of our life we don’t want to let go.  Our relationship with Jesus is worth more than just a part of us…let go and let God!  And remember letting go is much like the leaves that will fall this autumn….it is a sign of what is to come.  Surrender means to give up oneself into the power of another.  So today …whatever part your still holding on to …. surrender it…and allow God to bring newness of life.

Autumn’s Journey

Personally, I enjoyed the story and how it was able to provide a satisfactory and complete ending in not too long of a time.

This time of year, seasonal films are all around. You know the kind of movie I’m talking about: a two-to-three-hour film that might not leave much of a lasting impression over time but will still manage to leave you feeling cheery and happy for a little while afterward, at least. Autumn’s Journey is the visual novel equivalent of a seasonal film…and the game’s plot even has a seasonal focus! This VN is a short title to play through, but it leaves players feeling warm and fuzzy when they reach one of its three endings.

The concept for the game comes from Deji and Felipe Morano , with an excellent script penned by KittyKatStar.  Autumn’s Journey ’s setting is the fantasy world of Ishtera, which is home to two kinds of people: dragonkind and heavenkind. Heavenkind are your everyday humans who actually worship dragonkind. Players take on the role of Auralee, an aspiring heavenkind knight in training who hopes to prove herself by following in her accomplished mother’s heroic footsteps. She comes across a surly Earth Dragon named Kerr, who has been cursed into heavenkind form. Their encounter soon leads her on a journey through the fall season with Kerr and fellow dragonkind Ilmari as they work to undo Kerr’s curse by completing various tasks where he interacts with heavenkind more. Bonds of friendship (and potentially more) develop between the trio along the way.

The game itself isn’t terribly long, with playthroughs roughly two to three hours in length, so delving more into the story for this review would spoil quite a bit. While perhaps not the most original fantasy yarn out there, the plot is well crafted and the story exposition wonderfully handled. It provides you a clear sense of the world that the characters inhabit. The script itself is written quite nicely, with dialogue and descriptions flowing at a natural and believable pace and no noticeable errors or typos.

Autumn's Journey screenshot showing Auralee with great determination as she gets ready to defend herself in the forest.

Autumn’s Journey wisely focuses most of its time on our three heroes, giving you a strong sense of who they are and how they fit into the story’s fantasy setting. They aren’t the most original characters if one is familiar with tropes prevalent in JRPGs and fantasies in general, but they’re a likable group nonetheless and have quite a lot of surprising character development as events progress. For instance, Kerr kind of fits an archetype at the beginning of the story that I’m not the biggest fan of, but he steadily grew on me the more I played. The focus on the blooming friendship between the three main characters was sincerely cute and heartwarming, and I thought the lack of a “love triangle” in the strictest sense of the word was quite refreshing. Auralee’s enthusiasm, Kerr’s confidence, and Ilmari’s thoughtful nature were all wonderfully conveyed in their scenes.

Gameplay-wise, Autumn’s Journey is a straight-up visual novel. The story is told through artistic backdrops and text boxes, with the occasional decision point popping up for players as Auralee to choose. There is one point in the game where you must choose between a wide variety of tasks to assist townspeople with, but that’s the title’s greatest deviation point. Depending on your in-game decisions, you will be rewarded with CG artwork or differing scenes and outcomes that ultimately impact which of the three endings you get to see. The game really does nothing wrong in the “gameplay” department and is a serviceable VN.

The game’s art team consists of the talented Deji, Nellie, and S-morishita, and their work helps to bring the characters and world to life. I was actually familiar with Deji’s work before from when I reviewed Corona Borealis . Truth be told, I enjoyed her art style immensely in that title, and I feel as if she went into even more detail and expression with the designs here in Autumn’s Journey . The occasional chibi artwork in the game helps add to the cute aesthetic the title is striving for. At first I thought that the backgrounds were a bit too sparse, but they grew on me the more I played. I appreciated the sense of passing time they give as the journey through autumn continues. It was a fitting touch to see the outdoor backgrounds change from bright greens signaling the end of summer to the reds, oranges, and browns associated with the fall. The VN’s art direction is wonderfully fitting for its overall more lighthearted and sweet tone, even if certain artwork is reused on occasion, such as when the rare plot battle occurs.

A camping scene in chibi form where our protagonist pokes her sleeping companion with a stick.

While the art is nice, there is a sense of sparseness to it, as only the three main characters and Auralee’s mother ever get artwork. All other characters with spoken lines in the narrative remain hidden from view. This was most off-putting with Auralee’s dad, who I felt could have used a picture too. However, I generally didn’t mind the focus on the art going to just the three main characters in particular.

One of the only missteps I can truly think of with Autumn’s Journey is how the music tracks noticeably “loop” while scenes play out. While the soundtrack itself is serviceable, hearing it cut off and then start up again can be rather offputting and is so noticeable it took me right out of the story immersion often. However, I enjoyed that you could listen to the music tracks in the Extras menu of the game, and the ending theme, “Thank You” performed by Jason Chen, is absolutely lovely and fits the game’s story themes wonderfully.

Autumn’s Journey is available to play in either English or Spanish, and there is the bonus OpenDyslexic option for fonts that I found to be a nice touch. The game does tout partial voice acting, and while I thought the voice actors delivered their lines well, the limited quantity of stock phrases they used had me wondering just how necessary their inclusion really was. Truth be told, I’m not sure I would really have noticed if there’d been no voice acting whatsoever.

Two of our main characters share a blanket in the twilight.

Perhaps the biggest weakness of Autumn’s Journey is merely its length, as some will no doubt view its shortness as a negative. Personally, I enjoyed the story and how it was able to provide a satisfactory and complete ending without a long timeframe. Given the playtime, the game never felt as though it was dragging on past its welcome. However, I know that “short and sweet” isn’t to everyone’s tastes; it really does boil down to one’s gaming preferences.

Autumn’s Journey is a cute game with a lot of heart and charming fluff. Much like an entertaining seasonal film, it isn’t a title with a lasting impact after it’s done, but those looking for a short distraction that will have you feeling light and airy for a while will certainly find it here. I enjoyed playing it during the brief story, and that’s personally what matters most to me.

Short-but-sweet foray into an endearing fantasy VN, likable cast of characters, good art direction, excellent script.

Short duration might not be everyone’s preference, music looping transitions can take you out of scenes, voice acted stock phrases might not be completely necessary.

Bottom Line

Autumn's Journey is an enjoyably cute shorter VN.

Autumn’s Journey – PS4 Review

As maligned as the visual novel genre is, I keep wondering if I’m going to come across one with a genuinely good story.  They do exist but I find the majority I encounter land in the same trappings that stifle my enjoyment of a good read.  The latest to cross my path is Autumn’s Journey by Apple Cider. Advertising itself as a tale about friendship, the genre stereotypes are all on display and it’s left me feeling disappointed.

journey of autumn

This leads to our heroine teaching her two companions how to engage in some very human social interactions. In return, the dragons share some of their customs. It’s been done to death in the genre and it kind of tires me to see the same framing device used to crowbar characters into friendship. There’s not a lot of nuance to it and the story plays out so swiftly that there’s not a lot of time taken to develop them.

journey of autumn

There’s three endings on offer and getting there involves a handful of dialogue choices. It feels light on decisions but there is a job-hunting interlude that at least frames the choices your making as impactful. The jobs are divided up by the two men and these errands ultimately help push their relationships further. There’s a real opportunity to flesh out the characters which is rushed through.

That’s my biggest problem with the writing of Autumn’s Journey. It’s a well-worn tale to portray a friendship and there’s no time taken to really give it some substance. The fish out of water caveat makes it harder to sell. I would’ve loved to have seen a more human story instead of the cast being befuddled by each other’s customs. It’s something of a cop-out when a more human story is potentially more relatable.

journey of autumn

Visually, Autumn’s Journey has plenty of bright and colourful artwork. It fits in with the cheery, worry-free tone of the story and it’s not all static. There’s some decent use of Chibi animations to portray some of the game’s more interesting moments. At times, it looks playful and does help take your attention from the text scrawl.

Voice acting is used sparingly but it utilised enough to give the portraits a greater sense of character. That’s helpful when the cast carry the same traditional anime look to them. The male characters are predictably androgynous, Lady Boyard is a taller version of Auralee. They’re costumed in fairly standard fantasy attire and the only giveaway from the two dragons are their ears. It’s not new or exciting but it does at least bring some vibrancy to the screen.

journey of autumn

Autumn’s Journey doesn’t do much to interest me. It plays it very safe with the genre conventions and delivers a story in a hurry to deliver a happy ending. The art is bright and the animations are charming but the writing lacks substance. Predictability isn’t a problem if the characters are given the right attention to flourish but there’s no strife, nothing to really make this feel like a real friendship. It’s all too convenient and struggles to feel earned.

Autumn's Journey 5 Overall Pros + Bright and vibrant backgrounds. + Visually interesting with some actual action scenes. + Cheery music. + Some interludes help frame your choices well. Cons - The relationships go way too swimmingly. - Very, very stereotypical genre fare. - The conclusions don't feel especially earned or hard fought. - Not that much in the way of decisions to take. Summary Autumn's Journey is a story of friendship you've already heard before. In spite of the cheery visuals and pleasant tone, there's nothing refreshing on offer. The story barrels along into an inevitable conclusion with very little meat to subsidise the fluff. Having characters that are otherworldly dilutes any chance of a more relatable, human interactions and it starts to feel very contrived. Jennifer Love Hewitt Debuts Her 3 Kids on Book Cover: All the Details

Jennifer love hewitt shared a first look at her memoir inheriting magic , which features a rare glimpse of her and husband brian hallisay's three kids: autumn, atticus and aidan..

Jennifer Love Hewitt is entering a spellbinding new chapter—with help from her family.

The  9-1-1 actress proudly shared  the cover of  her memoir   Inheriting Magic: My Journey Through Grief, Joy, Celebration, and Making Every Day Magical , which features her and husband Brian Hallisay 's three kids   Autumn James , 10, Atticus James , 8, and Aidan James , 2.

In the sweet image, which marks the first time Jennifer has publicly shown her kids' faces, the Heartbreakers star holds up a wand and her spell book, while Autumn, Atticus and Aidan join in on the mystical moment.

"It was the most stressful decision to show our kids or not show them," Jennifer exclusively told E! News. "But my husband and I felt like we couldn't really tell our story without knowing who they are and how they have made our lives so full and magical."

In  Inheriting Magic , set for release December 10, Jennifer details her private journey following the death of her mother, Patricia Hewitt , in 2012.

"My kids also saved me in grief," she added. "They are gifts from my mom and have filled our hearts in such an incredible way. This book is for them!"

And for her mom.

"I felt healed enough from losing my mom to finally be able to write about it," she shared. "I also have seen how creating little bits of magic for my kids and friends makes our memories and everyday lives special. I wanted to honor my mom and how much being a mom means to me and this felt like the best way."

Jennifer Love Hewitt's debut memoir includes never-seen-before family photos, Jennifer's fave family recipes and "the magic-making ethos of a self-proclaimed Holiday Junkie." Pre-order is available now.

And although the I Know What You Did Last Summer  alum  has been a household name for years , Jennifer is excited for fans to get a rare look inside her world.

"The real me. The mom me and not just the public version which has been so much of my life," she told E!. "It meant a lot in my healing journey to cry and write about my mom, to hurt and still honor her with telling people how special she was and still is in my life."

"I reached a greater place of healing from writing this book," the 45-year-old added. "But it also shows birthday parties, holidays, how to plan and some family recipes that I hold special. As I create my brand, The Holiday Junkie, I wanted to show why I am that person and how it's a mindset and way of life not just a brand."
