Getaways from Kolkata: 6 forests you can escape to next weekend

By Shraddha Chowdhury

Getaways from Kolkata Doors forest

For Bengalis robbed of their annual summer break this year, there's some respite. The forests of West Bengal will reopen for tourists from 23 September after an extended closure. While these forests are locked down every year for two months during the monsoon—from 15 July to 15 September—this year, they have been out of bounds for tourists since March. Officials say the move will help revive the local economy ahead of the festive season. Of course, there will be health protocols that everyone will have to follow. But for now, you can at least start planning. Here are a few recommendations:

Getaways from Kolkata

Joypur jungle, 130km from kolkata.

Mountain views, gleaming rivers, wildlife, ancient temples and forts—this one packs in quite a lot. This Joypur jungle, located in West Bengal's Bankura district in the eastern Chota Nagpurhighland, is dotted with sal, palash, kusum, mahua, neem and teak trees and is home to spotted deer, wild foxes, elephants and wolves. An observatory inside the forest gives a panoramic view of the entire region. Among the places to visit are the 17th-century Jor Bangla Temple, with terracotta architecture on an elevated platform of laterite rocks, the Dalmadal gun, a 3.84m-long cannon in Bishnupur that represents the glory of the erstwhile Malla dynasty of the region, and the Gokulchand temple, constructed fort-like by Malla king Raghunath in the 17th century, as well as Susunia Pahar, Mukutmanipur (known for the Mukutmanipur Dam), and the Kamarpukur and Jayrambati villages. You can take a day walk through the woods, organise a picnic (with pre-cooked meals), but watch out for the mongoose and snakes.

Sonajhuri Forest, 170km from Kolkata

If you're visiting Shantiniketan from Kolkata, you must make time for Sonajhuri Forest. Visit the Sonajhuri Sonibarer Haat Saturday market of handicrafts and clothing here, Bonerpukur Gram, a tribal village, Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary, a haven for birds like kingfisher and woodpecker as well as deer, backbucks, jackals and foxes. The Kopai River and Rabindranath Tagore's Ashram are also close by. If one visits during winter, the entire forest ground is covered with tiny golden sonajhuri flowers, the reason the forest is named so (sonajhuri translates to drops of gold).

Dooars, 630km from Kolkata

The Dooars , or Duars, are the foothills of the eastern Himalayas. ‘Dooar' means ‘door', and the forest region is aptly named so as it forms the gateway to Bhutan from India. The forests are divided into the Eastern and Western Dooars by the Sankosh River. It's the Western Dooars that are known as the Bengal Dooars, while the one on the east is the Assam Dooars. In Bengal, the Darjeeling Himalayas constitute these forests, at a height of 90, to 1,750m. It's home to innumerable streams and rivers, including the Teesta. The area is dotted by several tea estates, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, such as the Gorumara National Park, the Buxa Tiger Reserve and the Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary. The beauty of the region doesn't just lie in the tea gardens and jungles, but also in the wildlife that the region is home to. If you're lucky, you can spot the Bengal tiger, Indian rhinoceros, elephants and a variety of leopards on a safari and myriads of birds on a safari. The region is also home to chital, sambar, gaur, a number of bear species and snakes. You can head to the Chukchuki Bird-watching Point, take a trip though Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, visit the Teesta Barrage and Buxa Fort and enjoy the sights around Bhutanghat and Jayanti River.

People from both sides are free to use the river but crossing over to the land is strictly prohibited. Forests to visit near Kolkata for a quick getaway

TRAVEL TRENDS , KOLKATA Updated : Jul 14, 2021, 08:20 IST

jungle tour near kolkata

While Kolkata has many charming spots to offer to a visitor, it also has forests around; places where one can get away from the chaotic city life. If you are willing to know more about these quick green getaways, here are some options in Kolkata that will help you leave behind the daily grind and get yourself a quick break.

The Sunderbans

The Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the mighty Royal Bengal tiger dwells, and is the world's largest delta, formed by the Ganga, Meghna, and Brahmaputra rivers. This spot got its name from one of the plants found in these mangroves, Sundari . Apart from the Royal Bengal Tiger, the Sundarban National Park is home to a variety of wildlife species. When you visit this place, you can also include places such as the Bhagabatpur Crocodile Sanctuary and Henry's Island in your itinerary.

Sonajhuri Forest

If you're on a trip to Shantiniketan from Kolkata, take a detour and try to make time for Sonajhuri Forest. Plan a visit to the Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a haven for birds like woodpecker, kingfisher, apart from blackbucks, deer, foxes, and jackals. Then, there is Rabindranath Tagore’s Ashram and Kopai River situated close by. The best time to visit this forest is during winters, when the entire forest ground gets enveloped in tiny golden sonajhuri flowers, the reason why it is also named as Sonajhuri forest.

Joypur Jungle

This spot comes with a number of highlights such as pristine rivers, gorgeous mountain views, ancient temples, and wildlife. Located in West Bengal's Bankura district, this place is dotted with palash, sal, mahua, kusum, teak, and neem trees, and is also home to wild foxes, spotted deer, wolves, and elephants. To get a bird’s eye view of the sanctuary, you can also get to an observatory that is built inside the forest. Then, there are places to visit such as the 17th-century Jor Bangla Temple, the Dalmadal Gun, which is a 3.84 m-long cannon in Bishnupur, the Gokulchand temple, Susunia Pahar, Mukutmanipur, and Jairambati and Kamarpukur villages.

Garh Jungle

Garh Jungle, believed to be among the oldest places in the country, is located in Durgapur. Popularly known as the Dharma Garh of Raja Surath, it is believed that Raja Surath performed Durga Puja at the temple here, i.e., in Shyamarumpa Mandir, which is set deep in the forest. When here, you can also plan a visit to Deul Park, which is located not far from Garh Jungle, and spend some time amod nature.

You can reach the wilderness of Jhargram from the Howrah Junction, which would take around three hours for you to reach there. Apart from the scenic landscape, there are many things that will keep you entertained, such as a walk among the royal Rajbari, the sanctuary ride, and much more. You can also take out time to explore the wildlife at the sanctuary, then opt to hike at Belpahari, and then relax near the banks of the Subarnarekha River. When here, you can also book your accommodation at one of the cottages built amif the flora at Jhargram.

I have experienced hypothetical silence during meditation, apart from that Kolkata is always engaging in something or other. I always wished to visit a place that offers me real silence.

Raichak is one of the best places to visit near Kolkata to witness the awesome sight of a calming and tranquil environment.

Raichak is a small town in South 24 Parganas on the bank of the Bhagirathi-Hooghly River. The place is surrounded by lush green fields on both sides, the noise of frogs croaking, and the glistening Ganga river flowing.

The aura of Raichak is so peaceful, simple, and calm that you will forget that your modern life is associated with worries, tensions, anxiety, and loud sounds.

The history of Portuguese pirates can be tracked from the 16th century in Raichak resulting in notable ruins and remnants of the Chingrikhali Fort and a lot more stories.

Diamond Harbor

Diamond Harbour of Raichak, formerly also called Hajipur, links Kolkata and Haldia and is the safest place for ocean-going ships to rest. Sitting along the harbor and seeing the people getting down of the ferries on the backdrop of orange-yellowish sunset is so soothing. You can also go visit Light House.

Chingrikhali Fort

An abandoned and ruined Chingrikhalifort near Diamond Harbor is one of the stunning sites to sit and enjoy the calmness of nature.

Ashrams of Ramkrishna Mission

Ramkrishna Ashramsnear Diamond Harbor is another holly place to visit near Kolkata, Raichak, and know more about the priests and the place. If you want you can also have mouthwatering lunch at Ashrams of Ramkrishna Mission, Raichak.

Sonar Tori   is a premium property of Ambuja Neotia Group that serves the best authentic Bengali-style food. The decoration brings back the memory of a village hut with a thatched roof, small “mora” or stools, mud walls and old charm. The food is served on old antique pieces; however, the price of the food is on the costlier side.

Radisson Fort or the F Fort is the most popular place to stay which was transformed by Bengal Ambuja Group into a deluxe resort. The Anglo-Indian structure on the riverside makes it the most demanded place to stay among tourists.

Spend rustic Bengali rural life in Babur Haat, dominated by natural beauty and lakes. Babur Haat is famous for “theris” or natural fishing lakes giving you a chance to taste the fresh variety types of fish.

Moreover, I love Babur Haat because of its wonderful scenic landscape and complete village environment. The long stretch of rice farmland, mangroves, palm, and orchards make Babur Haat the best weekend getaways from Kolkata within 100 Kms.

During my visit, I was told by a local that Malancha village which is 15 Km away from Babur Haat sells a huge variety of fish. And, to my surprise, the place has a huge variety of options all at affordable prices.

The famous fish market, Malancha Village offers the best local fresh fish of Bengal at an affordable price.
