• The dry season brings calm clear water with good visibility for diving and snorkeling.

If you have at least 7 days in Bali , this is a must, though if doing Mount Agung you should allot more like 2 weeks in Bali to allow for a few additional recovery days (since it’s the island’s highest peak).

• Ride a motorbike or a scooter to get around.
• Temple visits are a great introduction to Bali’s rich local culture at any time of year.

Things to pack for Bali’s dry season

For Bali in the dry season, pack lightweight cotton clothes, shorts, and a swimsuit. A long-sleeved shirt, sarong, and sandals are a good idea for visiting temples and long pants will offer some protection on a motorbike.

Balinese people dress modestly, so it’s best to cover your shoulders and knees, especially if you’re visiting less touristy parts of the island. Shorts, swimwear, and tank tops are fine to wear on the beach.

In the rainy season, the worst month to visit Bali is December. Not only is December one of the wettest months, but it’s also very popular with visitors over the Christmas holidays — making it a busier and more expensive time to travel to Bali.

Personally, I went to Bali in January and had a great time with minimal disruption from the weather. And, even at the height of the wet season, I found plenty of fun things to do when the weather wasn’t perfect.

• Accommodation is cheaper . Some of the larger hotels and resorts offer discounted rates in the low season.
• Airfares are lower at this time of the year. This makes it especially popular for backpackers and those traveling solo in Bali who don’t have others to split the costs with.

With awe-inspiring scenery, dense layers of culture, plenty of sun, surf and sand, and balmy temperatures year-round, Bali calls out like a beacon to adventurers, sun-seekers and travelers who like to truly immerse themselves in the countries they visit. Whatever your travel tastes, you'll find rewarding things to see and do in Bali at any time of year.

The dry season, from April to September, is the most enjoyable time of the year for outdoor activities, including basking on beaches, hiking, surfing, sailing, diving and canyoning. Visit during the wet season (November to March), and you'll experience frequent downpours, but there's good surf on the east coast, and you can still enjoy the outdoors, especially in drier areas in the east and north of the island. Temperatures in Bali don’t vary much from season to season, hovering between 28°C and 32°C (82°F to 90°F) year-round, though it's often cooler in mountain areas. The high season (July–August and December) is the best time for festivals and partying

The high season in Bali coincides with the traditional summer vacation season in Europe, America, and Australia in July and August. It's the height of the dry season and the peak time for surfing on the west coast at the breaks around Canggu and Seminyak . Bali's original beach hub, Kuta , can be mobbed at this time of year, as many travelers come here specifically for the party season. 

Most parts of Bali are inundated with visitors in summer, as tourists come to sample the island’s many delights and enjoy some of its most colorful festivals. Indonesia celebrates its independence from colonial powers on August 17 with plenty of pomp and fanfare. Expect entertaining parades and street parties in the bigger towns. 

The period around Christmas and New Year also sees a large influx of travelers seeking a reprieve from cold northern winters. Many hotels, restaurants and other venues organize special dinners and entertainment to mark the festive season. New Year’s Eve is particularly memorable, with spectacular fireworks at midnight to help you rock in the new year in style. Key events to look out for are the Pemuteran Bay Festival, Penglipuran Village Festival and, of course, New Year’s Eve celebrations. 

High season means high prices and pressing hordes in tightly-packed tourist areas; for a quieter experience, seek out more remote spots such as Nusa Penida and Pemuteran .

The shoulder season (April–June and September–October) is best for adventurous travelers

The shoulder season in Bali falls at either end of the dry season, when the weather is either improving after the rains or getting slowly wetter after the dry months. Things are quieter without the summertime crowds, and the weather is normally still dry enough for outdoor activities. However, the two-week Easter spring break can get very busy in tourist areas such as Kuta and Legian .

May marks the surfing season in full swing on the west and south coasts, and rafting, trekking and spelunking beckon adventure sports fans.

As rain showers in October are more frequent than in the dry summer months, plan to spend some time indoors visiting temples, museums and cultural institutions in Ubud , Denpasar , and other centers for Balinese culture. The low season (January–March and November) is best for budget travelers

Bali’s low season coincides with the rainiest months of the year, and this can be an unpredictable time for outdoor activities. The crowds have decamped back home, and the island is returning to a more relaxed vibe, but there's still decent surf on the east coast at such legendary locations as Padang Padang, and the weather is still warm. Accommodation prices fall considerably, which is great news for budget travelers.

At the end of January or the start of February, Chinese New Year celebrations feature typical Balinese elements such as traditional percussion bands and dancers dressed as the mythological lion-like creature Barong. 

The festival of Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, moves with the lunar calendar but frequently falls in March. This is a culturally fascinating time to visit Bali, but after the colorful parades of ogoh-ogoh puppets the night before the festival, the Day of Silence itself can be a tricky time for visitors as everything closes, transport ceases, and nobody is allowed out on the streets.

Understanding the Balinese calendar

Note that religious festivals such as Galungan and Kuningan are scheduled according to the Balinese 210-day pawukon calendar. This means they happen roughly every seven months, according to the Western calendar. Like most of tropical Indonesia, Bali only really has two seasons throughout the year, the dry season and the wet season. 

All year-round, it’s hot, and for many, Bali can be visited any time of the year, but between November and March, you can expect downpours most days during the wet season. 

April to October is the dry season and you can expect larger crowds and higher prices but the weather will be perfect.

Often, the best time to visit Bali is a trade-off between the weather and the number of visitors.

Bali Dry Season

The dry season is the best time to visit Bali when it comes to the weather because for half of the year you can expect beautiful clear skies and almost no rainfall.

The dry season in Bali runs from May to October, although this can vary each year. The peak months are the height of the Balinese winter, which is June, July, and August.

May in Bali

May is the start of the official dry season in Bali, but you can still expect a mixed bag when it comes to the weather.

One year it could be raining all through May but the next it can be dry from as early as April. 

If it does rain in May though it’s guaranteed to just be a few light showers, and this is the best time to visit before you hit the high season from June to August.

Prices will be lower in May and with the better weather, it’s a good time to start diving and snorkeling, as the water visibility clears up.

It’s getting cooler too and less humid, so a hike to the summit of Bali’s mysterious volcano, Mount Batur, can be a great activity in May, as you’ll miss the crowds and enjoy better conditions for hiking. 

June in Bali

June is the start of the high season in Bali, although it’s not quite as busy a month as July and August. The weather is likely to be perfect with temperatures averaging in the mid-twenties and humidity low. 

You’ll have to be really unlucky to see even a light rain shower, so it’s a great time to hit up the beaches and make the most of the clear skies and sunshine. 

Prices start to climb in June, but you’ll miss the worst of the high season which picks up towards the end of the month when the European summer holidays begin in earnest. 

In June you should visit the more touristy attractions such as the famous temples in the south – Uluwatu for instance – or the increasingly popular Nusa Islands before the summer crowds make their appearance. 

July in Bali

July is usually the busiest month to visit Bali, but for good reason, and that’s because you’ll be enjoying the best weather of the year. 

But as well as enjoying sunny, clear skies and zero rain, you’ll be sharing the beaches and resorts with hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers. People flock here from Europe, America and more than anywhere else, from Australia. 

Prices will be higher for flights and hotels, but if you do want to escape the crowds then head north.

This is a great time to experience a side of Bali that most miss, and by exploring the black sand beaches of Amed or the coast and jungle of Bali Barat National Park, you’ll see how the south of Bali was a few decades previously. 

August in Bali

Much like July, August is always super busy in Bali. The weather is again beautiful, with clear skies and sunny days, and it’s a great time for lounging on beaches and drinking cold Bintang Beers. 

If you want to escape the holiday crowds though then plan a trip north, and visit the beautiful coastline in more rustic destinations such as Lovina or Amed, where tourism has only recently begun to develop.

There are great snorkeling and diving up north too, including some famous shipwrecks, and as it’s the height of the dry season the water will be beautifully clear.

September in Bali

September can be the best time to visit Bali if you want a great mix of good weather and smaller crowds. 

Things will still be busy and flights will be more expensive than the later shoulder season months. But you’ll save money compared to the true high season and have fewer people around when you explore touristy destinations such as Ubud, Kuta or the Nusa Islands. 

October in Bali

October is a great shoulder season month, but the dry weather is coming to a close. There are more and more rainy days, but these can be unpredictable.

If you’re in Bali for two weeks, you’ll most likely have enough dry days to make the most of your visit. 

Enjoy the south and the more traditional beach areas, get cultural in Ubud or escape to the north to see a wilder side of the island. 

Bali Wet Season 

The wet season in Bali runs from November through to April, corresponding with the southern hemisphere summer and fall.

It’s tropical, and that means that while it does rain hard when it rains, showers and storms are brief but fierce.

The rainy season can be a great time to miss the crowds but give December and January a miss because these two months are still incredibly popular despite the wet weather. 

November in Bali

November is when the rainy season starts in Bali, but just how much rain there will be, can vary.

You’ll have good odds of having lovely sunny days still, and it’s a great time to visit because you’ll miss the Christmas crowds who are just around the corner. 

You can get wonderful deals on flights and hotels through November, and you’ll still be able to snorkel and dive before the water gets too cloudy from the rains.

It’s getting hotter, but take a trip to the summit of Mount Batur and you’ll be able to cool down after a challenging hike to the top of Bali’s iconic volcano. 

December in Bali

December is usually the rainiest month of the year, and weather-wise, this really is not the best time to visit Bali. 

The tourist crowds would beg to differ though because while you might get soaked, it’s also incredibly warm still.

That draws over the Christmas crowds seeking winter sun from Europe and North America , and it still brings over the Aussie crowds looking for a cheap getaway. 

It’s a lively time to be in Bali, and it’s not a bad place at all to spend Christmas and New Year, but be prepared for high prices and lots of other travelers and tourists. 

January in Bali

January can be just as busy as December and unfortunately, just as rainy. This is the height of the wet season, but again, it doesn’t put off the crowds. 

If you do visit, then the southern beaches and classic resort areas are best avoided. Head north instead, and find a bit more peace and quiet in the lesser-visited parts of Bali.

February in Bali

In February, the weather starts to cool down slightly and the rainy days begin to disappear, but it’s still very much the wet season. 

It’s a great shoulder season month, right after the Christmas crowds go home, and you can enjoy many of Bali’s best sights with fewer people around. 

Head to the waterfalls, as they will be in their element, and the jungle will be lush and green from all the rainfall over the last few months. 

March in Bali

March can be a wet month or it can be a dry month, the weather gods in Bali are unpredictable this time of the year. 

It will be a quiet month on the tourism front though and that makes it the best time to visit Bali if you’re a fan of shoulder season travel. 

The Christmas and New Year crowds are long gone, and the dry season tourists are a few months away.

You can get great deals on flights and resorts if you book in advance, and you’ll find that lots of beach areas in the south such as Kuta, Seminyak or Canggu are quieter.

This is Bali though, so if you’re here for the social aspects then there are always other travelers around to hang out with. 

April in Bali

April is a great shoulder month, but be careful of the Easter Holidays in Australia or Europe, as Bali becomes a popular holiday break destination during this time of the year. 

You could enjoy almost all sunny days or conversely it could also rain a lot, but that’s the gamble in April as the rainy season draws to a close. 

It’s the tail end of the wet season though and Bali will be blooming, making this a great month to visit the waterfalls and the rice paddies before they start to dry out again.

Visit Ubud for cultural festivals and then hike through the rice terraces nearby.

Best Times to Visit Bali for Lower Prices

The busiest and most expensive time in Bali is during the dry season, with hotel prices peaking between June and September. Tourism also sees a boost during the holidays, so you can expect higher hotel prices in November and December.

The most affordable time to visit Bali is from January through March, the rainy-season months that fall outside of the festive season. Hotel prices during this time tend to be lower due to the lack of demand, making it possible to score ocean-view rooms or multi-bedroom villas for a fraction of the price you would pay during the dry season. You may also find deals during the quiet shoulder season months, April and October.

Best Months for Hiking in Bali

If you're traveling to Bali specifically to hike, visiting between April and October is ideal, as the rainy season can cause trails to be muddy and slippery. For those planning to do some waterfall hikes, the best time to visit Bali is in April, May, and June, when the cascades are strong following the wet season, and the days are more likely to be sunny. Hikers who rent motorbikes will also have an easier time zipping around the island during the dry season since the roads can become treacherous in the rain.

Best Time to Hike Mount Batur

Mount Batur is perhaps the most iconic Bali hike. Typically, you'll book through a tour company that will pick you up from your hotel at about 2 a.m. for the 1,717-meter (5,633-foot) trek. You'll summit the active volcano as the sun rises, and depending on your guide, you may even be treated to eggs boiled in the volcanic steam at the top of Mount Batur. The two-hour hike to the summit is best done between May and September to ensure dry weather and clear views.

Best Times to Visit Bali for Festivals

One of the most iconic annual events in Bali is the Bali Arts Festival, which occurs in June and July. Indonesian Independence Day (or Hari Merdeka) falls on August 17 and is commemorated with parades and outdoor celebrations. Keep in mind that if you're traveling for a Hindu celebration, Balinese Hindus often celebrate different holidays than Hindus in India. Galungan, for example, is an important 10-day celebration of the triumph of good over evil (dharma over adharma) that occurs every 210 days according to the Balinese Pawukon calendar. Nyepi, a day of silence, fasting, and meditation before the New Year, typically takes place in March.

Best Months to Visit the Beach in Bali

May to September is the best time to visit Bali for a classic beach vacation. Days tend to be hot, sunny, and dry, creating ideal conditions for snorkeling, diving, and other water sports. However, the drawback of visiting Bali during this period is that most of these months fall within the peak season. The temples, beaches, hotels, and yoga classes will be crowded, so it's likely you won't have as many opportunities to soak up that sweet Balinese serenity you're treated to in the low season.

Worst Times to Visit Bali

Of course, those looking for a quintessential Bali vacation with plenty of sunshine and outdoor activities will want to avoid the rainy season (especially during the wettest months, December and January). At this time of year, it's common to experience choppy seas, muddy trails, and afternoon storms, which can quite literally put a damper on your plans. However, travelers looking to spend their days practicing yoga, visiting temples, or enjoying cultural experiences indoors may prefer the quieter atmosphere.

Due to higher levels of precipitation, mosquitos can be particularly prolific in the rainy season and the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses (like dengue fever) increases accordingly. If you do plan to visit during the wet season, bug repellant is a must-have on your pack list — especially when hiking in the jungle. Some locals also drink lemongrass tea, which is believed to be a natural insect repellent.

While it can often seem like the island goes from busy to busier, tourism ebb and flow typically coincides with weather patterns. Bali has two distinct seasons, the dry season (April to October) and the wet season (November to March). Fewer rains and less humidity make the dry season the most popular time to visit, whereas the wet season can yield fewer crowds and more affordable nightly rates. Travelers can also take advantage of shoulder seasons—such as the beginning or tail-end of the dry season—when the weather is moderate but the island is still abuzz.

Spring (March to May)

The beginning of the dry season is one of the best times to visit Bali: crowds are light and the rains drop off dramatically by the end of March. Though temperatures typically hover in the 90s (more or less the norm for Bali outside of high season), you’ll find a comfortable breeze in beach towns such as Seminyak, Uluwatu, Canggu, and Nusa Dua.

The weather is largely unpredictable during the height of the wet season: rainstorms may dissipate within a few hours or deliver a constant downpour for days on end. (Do yourselves a favor and pack extra bug spray.)

However, there are advantages to traveling in winter, beyond the affordable room rates. The island’s already lush landscapes spring to life during the “green” season, and you might find attractions like Ubud’s Goa Gajah ( Elephant Cave ) all to yourselves.

Bali makes an excellent destination for vacationers year-round. However, each season has unique draws and drawbacks. We’re going over exactly what to expect in each season to help you determine the best time to visit Bali for YOU!

Bali technically sits below the equator in the southern hemisphere (exactly 8° south of the equator if you want to get precise). Which means the seasons are opposite those of the Northern Hemisphere.

However, Bali has a warm, tropical climate all year round. This means they don’t experience the same changing of the seasons like you would see in say  New Zealand .

Temperatures in Bali don’t fluctuate much throughout the year. The two distinct seasons in Bali are simply the rainy season and the dry season . Otherwise known as the busy tourism season, and the even busier tourism season. 

This may sound pretty straight forward… you want to visit during the dry season right?? Well, we think the answer is just a bit more complicated than that.

There are pros and cons to visiting during both seasons and as with any destination, the weather is never as predictable as we’d like it to be.

So this begs the question…

When is the best time of year to visit Bali?

In short, you’ll have the best chance of comfortable weather during the peak of the dry season, June – August. We’d recommend to avoid visiting during the December holidays as not only is this peak rainy season, but crowds are also heavy. 

Our personal pick would be to visit Bali during the shoulder months, May, June or September, to avoid the rain and the crowds. But more on that later…

Truthfully, as with all questions of this nature, there is no correct answer. Bali makes an excellent destination for vacationers and digital nomads all year round. Each season has its own unique draws (and  drawbacks  too).

But fear not…

Our experience in Bali 

We’ve visited Bali for multiple month stretches during the the spring, summer & fall months

When: August (2015), mid-August – mid-November (2018), June – August (2019), March – April (2023)

Our experience:

• The rainy season was prolonged a bit further into April than usual in 2023, but the sun still came out daily
• It was noticeably more humid in March than in April
• Observing Neyepi (the Balinese day of silence) in Bali was an interesting experience as no one was allowed to leave the home and we couldn’t turn on the lights after dark (around 6:30 p.m.)

Would we recommend visiting Bali in spring? 

Mostly, yes. As long as you don’t mind a bit of rain and humidity, visiting during the shoulder season means less crowds than in summertime. Most activities are enjoyable year round in Bali. 

• We experienced pretty dry, warm weather in the summer months with lots of sunshine
• The ocean temperatures are warmer in the winter and spring than in the summertime
• We were able to go scuba diving in Amed with just a shorty wetsuit
• The popular tourist hubs like Canggu and Ubud are very busy during the summer and traffic can be quite chaotic

Would we recommend visiting Bali in the summer? 

Yes! The weather in Bali is at its best during the summer months of the northern hemisphere. Even though the summer draws more crowds (mostly vacationers from Australia who are fleeing the winter down under), it’s worth it to experience the best weather possible. 

• October is known as one of the last months of the dry season, with humidity building until the rainy season begins (typically November – April). 
• Personally, we didn’t notice the humidity getting much worse during our stay from August through November, and we don’t remember any rain during this period.
• We had great weather, clear skies, and beachy temperatures during our stay.
• We did leave Bali in mid-November (for a trip to New Zealand ), so we missed the rainy season.
• It seemed that the fall crowds of foreigners were mainly digital nomads and expats, rather than people on vacation, which you’ll see more of in the summer months.

Would we recommend visiting Bali in the fall? 

Yes, we’d recommend early fall. If possible, try to visit between September and early to mid-November so you can avoid the rainy season.

Bali is a small island in Southeast Asia between the Indian and the Pacific oceans. As one of the 17,000+ islands that make up the nation of Indonesia , Bali is commonly the most recognized and easily the most visited by tourists.

The volcanic island is made up of peaks, some of which rise over 3,000 meters (almost 10,000 ft high!). And some are still active. In fact, recent eruptions in the past few years have been known to cause flight delays and cancelations due to ash in the air.

Bali’s volcanic nature, combined with the mountain peaks that bring rain, contribute to it’s lush greenery and exceptional fertility . Rice is the most common crop grown on Bali and you’ll see evidence everywhere you go with terracing rice fields making beautiful backdrops in your photos.

Since Bali is so close to the equator, the daylight hours are pretty consistent year round . The longest day of the year is 12.5 hours and the shortest day of the year is 11.5 hours. This makes the sunrise and sunset pretty consistent around 6 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. daily.

As we mentioned above, Bali predominantly has two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season . Being in a tropical climate, humidity and precipitation are the only patterns that really change with the season. Daytime temperatures hover between mid-70s to mid-80s ( ° F) throughout the year.

At just about 3,500 sq. miles (5,632 km² to be exact), the island is fairly small and weather doesn’t vary much from coast to coast. However, the volcanic peaks that make up the center of the island will have consistently cooler temperatures and more rainfall than the lower coastal areas.

Dry Season in Bali

Temptation to escape the winter months in the southern hemisphere, combined with little rain and lower humidity in Bali makes the dry season a very crowded time to visit. The is particularly true for the winter months of June – August.

Accommodation can also be hard to come by with so many tourists on holiday, so it’s a good idea to book in advance if you plan to visit during Bali during this time of year.

Dry season months at a glance

April:  The island tends to see the warmest temps during April. The Easter holiday week is a busy time in Bali, but the rest of the month tends to see more “shoulder season” traffic.

• Average daily temp: 77-94° F (25-34° C)

May:  Moving into the “shoulder season” for tourism, May is still very hot but humidity is going down.

• Average daily temp: 75-92° F (24-33° C)

June:  The first month of the winter in the Southern hemisphere, and temperatures continue to drop. June is on the edge of “shoulder season” and peak tourism near the end of the month.

• Average daily temp: 72-89° F (22-32° C)

July:  Tourism spikes during the month of July and prices for accommodation may jump as much as 50%. You should book accommodation early if you plan to visit during July as places tend to book up quickly.

• Average daily temp: 73-87° F (23-31° C)

August:  Bali typically has coolest temperatures of the year during the month of August. The peak of tourism runs through August and accommodation prices stay as high as they were in July. Indonesian Independence Day is celebrated on Aug 17th.

• Average daily temp: 72-85° F (22-29° C)

September:  Tourism drops off just a bit after August as September is the first month of the typical “shoulder season” in Bali. 

• Average daily temp: 73-89° F (23-32° C)

October:  Temperatures are beginning to rise, but it’s still fairly dry with less humidity. Crowds are slightly thinner during this month.

• Average daily temp: 75-93° F (24-34° C)

Best places to visit during dry season in Bali

• Amed :  the popular diving region on Bali’s east coast, home to the famous USAT Liberty Shipwreck. Just a 2 hour drive from Denpasar.
• Off-the-beaten-track destinations such as  Sideman : a 45 min drive from Ubud, beautiful laidback countryside filled with rolling hills and rice terraces
• Get away to the nearby islands such as  Nusa Penida,  Lombok  (which includes the famous Gili Islands), or  Flores . 

Best things to do during dry season in Bali

• The weather during dry season is ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, sailing, etc. 
• Try a new water sport such as surfing or diving
• Hike Mount Batur at sunrise
• Do a bike tour of the Balinese country-side with  Ring a Bike Tour  (and be sure to tell Ring that Two Wandering Soles sent you!)
• Bali Arts Festival (2nd Saturday of June – mid-July)
• Bali Kites Festival (Jul-Aug)

• Peak tourism season (particularly July/Aug)
• Hotel prices spike in July/Aug
• Traffic gets pretty crazy in Bali (all the time) but especially so in the major tourism areas such as Kuta and North Kuta during the high season. More tourists on the roads mean a higher chance for accidents from people driving in unfamiliar territory. 
• Major tourist attractions such as temples and parks will be very crowded 

What to pack for Bali during the dry season

• Good hiking/walking shoes (we recommend  Chacos sandals  as they are perfect for hiking, and lighter than hiking boots)
• Reef safe sunscreen
• Optional: Surfboard or diving gear

Rainy Season in Bali

During the rainy season in Bali, the weather is more inconsistent. Downpours can span for days, or dissipate after just an hour.

Temperatures are at their highest during this time of year in Bali and with the frequent precipitation comes high humidity as well. Insects, as we know, love humidity, so be prepared to fight off swarms of mosquitos!

Bali is pretty full of tourists all year round, however, this is technically “low season” for tourism because of the rain and humidity. Even during the rainy season though, you’re likely to get sunshine in between showers. 

Rainy season months at a glance

November:  You may be tempted to beat the rising November heat by swimming, surfing or diving in Bali. However, it’s a good thing to keep in mind that the sea is usually roughest during November.

• Average daily temp: 74-91° F (23-33° C)

December:  Bali is typically most crowded over the Christmas/New Years holidays. Prices will spike over the holidays as foreigners come to celebrate while on vacation. Accommodation over the holidays will be pricy and fill up fast. However, the rest of the month is relatively less crowded.

January:  The least crowded month in Bali, but also the month with the most rainfall. January typically sees very few days without at least a drizzle. That being said, even during rainy season, the skies dry out every once in a while.

February:  Between low and “shoulder season,” February is still quite hot and humid. However, with the frequent precipitation you’re likely to see slightly less tourists.

• Average daily temp: 76-92° F (24-33° C)

March:  Crowds start building as it’s spring break in the northern hemisphere and people are starting to filter in for the dry season. Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, falls in March. It is important to be aware of this date because the Balinese Hindu people celebrate this day with a day of silence. For a full 24 hours, everyone (even tourists) is expected to remain indoors and no noise is permitted. Beaches and businesses are closed down for the day, including the international airport. So this will definitely affect your trip if you are planning to visit Bali in March. 

Best places to visit during rainy season in Bali

• Tannah Lot Temple  – be sure to visit during low tide so you can walk out to the entrance of the temple and be blessed with the spring water that flows from the temple and is considered holy. 
• Uluwatu Temple  – Watch out for the moneys here! They are everywhere and very sneaky. Make sure you have your bags zipped and close to your body at all times. Put sunglasses and anything loose into your bags while here, or those moneys may just try to rob you. If you are holding a phone or camera, make sure you keep a good grip on it and hold it close to your body when not in use. 

• Ubud Monkey Forest  – one of the most popular attractions in Ubud is a good place to visit during low season, particularly if you go while it’s drizzling out. (See our note about watching out for monkeys above as they are prone to swipping here as well.)
• Sekumpul Waterfall  – Often referred to as the most beautiful waterfall in Bali, we tend to agree!
• Banyumala Twin Falls  – This stunning waterfall doesn’t always have enough water flow, so it’d best to visit during rainy season to ensure an epic view.

Best things to do during rainy season in Bali

• Try a  cooking class
• Devdan Dance and Music Show
• Balinese massage, or go full-out and pamper yourself with a spa day!
• Craft-making workshop (such as a  Batik class  or  soap carving workshop )
• Take a yoga class (we recommend The Practice in Canggu or Yoga Barn in Ubud)
• Nusa Dua Festival (Oct-Nov)
• Mekepung Buffalo races (held in Negara during the fall)

Pros of visiting Bali during the rainy season

• High humidity/high temps deter some tourists from visiting during this time, so Bali tends to be less crowded.
• Typical tourist attractions such as temples and beaches will be less crowded than in busy season.
• Traffic on the roads won’t be quite as busy as the typical hustle and bustle of high season.
• Bali’s weather is still fairly sunny, even during the rainy season you’ll usually see sunny skies for at least part of the day.

Cons of visiting Bali during the rainy season

• Higher chance of rain – as often as daily in January
• High temperatures and high humidity
• Mosquitos…eek!
• Decreased visibility at dive sites due to weather

What to pack for Bali during the rainy season

• bug repellant  (solids are the way to go)
• rubber flip flops
• light, loose fitting, breathable clothing

In our opinion, the best time to visit Bali would be during the “shoulder season” months of May, June or September. Here are our primary reasons for choosing this time:

• Room prices are not at peak rates (usually 30-50% lower)
• Weather is dry and less humid than peak of rainy season
• Not too crowded
• Good sea conditions for diving/surfing/snorkeling
• Reasonable airfare can be found (Hint: Use these  hacks for booking cheap flights !)
• Promotional sales in shops on the island

We’d recommend to avoid visiting during the December holidays as not only is this peak rainy season, but crowds are also heavy.

Sure, there are times when Bali is a heaving mess of tourists. There are also times when you can see the real beauty and magic of the spiritual island. When you can get away from other tourists to find the hidden gems of natural magnificence and splendour.

It’s all in the planning, babe.

As someone who has lived in Bali for many-a year, I feel pretty qualified to let you know when the best time to visit Bali is, and when you might wanna avoid if you are looking for that serene, tropical paradise experience.

When is the Best Time to Visit Bali?

I may have a little bit of bias here, but there isn’t ever a bad time to visit Bali. You can always seek out incredible moments on the small island. However, the BEST time to travel to Bali is during the dry season.

Usually running from April to October (I say usually as global warming is fucking everything up), the dry weather is perfect for being able to get out every day and explore all of the island’s beauty. ‘Dry’ may be a little misleading as there will be super humid days – your skin will be GLOWING in the tropical climate!

If you don’t need to worry about school holidays, I would definitely recommend coming in May or June. It is not quite high season, and you’ll have consistent good weather. It is also a brilliant time with some amazing festivals like the Bali Arts Festival taking place mid-June! You’ll also see a lot of domestic tourists in Bali during these months as Indonesian schools are on holiday.

During dry season you’ll want to be smothered in SPF all day long, even if it’s a little grey. The UV index is HIGH and you don’t want to ruin your trip with blistering sun burn and heat stroke.

There is no shortage of places to stay in Bali . Prices will vary throughout the year, with the wet season offering a little more bang for your buck. That being said, with a little research of areas and what’s available, you’ll be able to find your dream island accomm at the price you want to pay! Get on it and book your accommodation early for the best deals.

TLDR: Bali is ALWAYS amazing. But check out May or June for a more relaxed and sunny Bali trip.

The CHEAPEST time to visit Bali comes with the rain. October-March (it isn’t an exact science so don’t come for me) is the wet season with moderate rainfall, storms and cooler temperatures.

Now, I spend the majority of my year in Bali, and to be honest don’t find the rainy season to be too disabling. You can still get out and about, just need to be a little more prepared for setbacks and getting a lil (VERY) wet.

December, especially late December, is a mini high season as many visitors flock to the beautiful island for a tropical Christmas and New Year celebration. Other than those 2 weeks, it is off season throughout the rainy days and you’ll find heavily discounted accommodations and hotels.

If you’re searching for a laid-back, chill, no crazy plans kind of getaway, visiting Bali during the rainy season is ideal!

Ok, you want even MORE info? Here I present you with a DETAILED, fabulous, month by month guide of what is going on in Bali including weather, events, tourists and more! Don’t say I don’t treat you well.

January in Bali

• Average Max. Temperature: 26°C
• Rainfall : 27 days, rainy season

January in Bali sees many of the Christmas and New Year tourists departing, ending the high season and leaving the island less crowded. It’s the  rainiest month of the year , and if you’re heading inland to the highlands and mountains, things get torrential. 

After the New Year buzz wears off there are much  fewer tourists and cheaper hotel prices .

February in Bali

• Rainfall : 22 days, rainy season

It’s still  pretty wet  in Bali over February with cooler temperatures and humidity – much like January. The showers don’t last all day long, but can be unpredictable, always be ready to throw on a raincoat. 

As things head towards the off season,  tourist numbers dwindle  and the island feels slow and quiet. This also means that you are likely to pick up some really  good deals  on where to stay. 

If you are looking for some amazing surf conditions, head to Nusa Dua during February!

March in Bali

• Average Max. Temperature: 26.5°C
• Rainfall : 20 days, rainy season

During March, the rain is still around and the  humidity comes down . The chances of rain are lower – but never zero.

This is the start of the low season, so you can enjoy blissfully relaxed and crowd-free conditions on the island. Flights and accommodation are  much cheaper now so, if you’re trying to keep costs low , this is your time.   

It is pretty common that the Balinese celebration of Nyepi will take place during March. The date changes every year, dependent on the Balinese calendar. You’ll want to read up on this one as not only is it an incredible show of culture, it can have an affect on your plans.

April in Bali

• Average Max. Temperature: 27°C
• Rainfall : 9 days, dry/shoulder season

April is a great month to visit Bali. Not only is it my birthday month (;)), the weather is a bit more predictable with a lesser chance of crazy rain. It ain’t called April Showers for nothing! Temperatures are a little higher, but without the humidity it’s so much more bearable.

Often around the Easter holidays, tourists will begin to trickle in but not at the high rates of July/August time.

There are some great things to see in Bali during April like the Ubud Food Festival, and the surf conditions are amazing!

May in Bali

• Average Max. Temperature: 28°C
• Rainfall : 8 days, dry season

If you LOVE the sun, May is when you will wanna visit Bali. It is the hottest month of the year! Dry season has officially hit and we love to see it.

During May, you won’t wanna be doing anything too crazy. Beach lounging, retail therapy, poolside cocktails – fun in the sun! Be sure you are stocked up on SPF.

We still aren’t quite at high season tourist wise so accommodations are still affordable, and the restaurants and cafes aren’t super packed.

June in Bali

• Rainfall : 6 days, dry season

During June you will start to see the island getting a buzz about it. The airport is a little more busy, places to stay are getting a bit more expensive and tourist spots are getting crowded. We haven’t yet hit high season, but it’s in the air!

The weather during June is consistently dry, but the chance of a tropical storm is never far – usually at night.

If you are heading to Bali from mid-June onwards be sure you have everything booked in advance as prices are only going to rise from now!

July in Bali

• Rainfall : 4 days, dry season

Here we are people, PEAK TOURISM SEASON in Bali. July is the month of crowds, traffic and shit getting hella expensive. That being said, don’t knock it just yet. There are always some quiet spots to be found away from the masses.

It is prime beach weather during July, though you may be fighting for a good spot on the sand. You’ll also see A LOT of kites soaring through the skies as Bali’s Kite Festival kicks off and all the local kids get involved.

August in Bali

From mid July through August, high season is in full swing with a steady inflow of tourists and events on the island. The weather is top notch, with a super tiny chance of rain and guaranteed SUN.

August 17th is Indonesia’s Independence Day which is celebrated with a public holiday, decorations, local events and parties. If you are lucky enough to have close Indonesian friends, this will be a big deal for them! Get ready to wave your Indo flags.

September in Bali

Goodbye tourists, hello awesome vibes. After a successful high season, the buzz in Bali is palpable with a few wise travellers coming in but most general tourists having left. September is a great time to get out and explore the island, taking tours of temples, scuba diving, doing mountain hikes and immersing in the beautiful island.

You’ll have dry weather, and a slower atmosphere than August.

October in Bali

• Rainfall : 12 days, rainy season

Here we go, the rains a-coming. In October, we start to see some more moderate rainfall and the off season, slow tourist traffic. If you don’t mind the risk of a down pour here and there, October can be an affordable time to visit Bali.

Rainy season is well and truly upon us, but so are some great events like the Ubud Writer’s Festival and the Bali Vegan Festival.

November in Bali

• Rainfall : 17, rainy season

Bali has 2 distinct seasons, and November is when you can clearly see rainy season getting serious. Daily showers are more common, but don’t last too long. Be warned, even if the day starts off clear, there’s no promise it’ll stay that way. Humidity is HIGH, making it a sticky time.

You’ll find cheap places to stay during November, and the rice paddies look particularly pretty after a little drenching – so it ain’t all bad. I think Balis is one of the best places to visit in November in the world.

December in Bali

The start of December is a relatively quiet time in Bali with fewer tourists and guaranteed rain. The cooler temperatures make it a great time to visit tourist spots, but be ready to whack on a waterproof.

Late December sees an influx of visitors heading to the island for Christmas and New Year in a tropical climate. There won’t be any outdoor celebrations, but you can definitely find yourself a knock-up Christmas dinner to feast on.

You know WHEN to head to Bali, but now we are going to get into geographical specifics!

Best Time to Visit Canggu

If you know anything about modern Bali, Canggu is the hip and happening place to go. It’s jam-packed with all kinds of trendy restaurants, cafes, bars, clubs, coworking spaces and some pretty epic hostels .

It’s relatively easy to explore Canggu on a budget, but you will defo be spending more than you would in the less trendy areas. It’s all about your preference!

The weather in Canggu is consistent with the Bali averages as it is a coast side town. There’s sun, there’s humidity and there will be rain. The biggest impact the weather has on Canggu is the tide. If you are looking to get out and surf, you will wanna check on the tide reports and make sure you aren’t throwing yourself into a challenging current.

To sum up, the best time to visit Canggu is: always.

Best Time to Visit Ubud

Ubud is the cultural heart of the island with some incredible temples, the Royal Palace, rice terraces and the famous Monkey Forest. It is also literally in the heart of the island, up in the highlands with tall hills, swooping ravines and thick jungles.

The best time to visit Ubud is during the dry season. When it rains in Ubud, it POURS and can cause some nasty flooding, but it’s still one of the safest places in Bali as far as tsunami risks are concerned.

It is a lot cooler in the evenings in Ubud than it is on the coast, so you will wanna pack a light jumper. Also be prepared for some crazy insects and mosquitoes around your accommodation in Ubud as the jungles bring out all kinds of creatures.

A place for spiritual healing, great yoga and fabulous vegan food, Ubud is where you can have your own Eat, Pray, Love experience.

Best Time to Visit Uluwatu

If you are thinking for exploring Uluwatu, you are probably thinking beaches, surfing, good food – and that’s probably it. What do you need for these activities? Good weather! It’s best to visit Uluwatu during the dry season when the weather is more predictable and you don’t find yourself stuck on a cliffside in a torrential downpour.  

The surfing conditions are also heavily dependent on the weather, and will be a much easier ride during the dry season.

Sure it might be cheaper to visit Uluwatu when the rainy season deals strike, but is it worth it if you can’t spend a full day on Bingin beach? That’s your decision to make.

Many of the best places to stay in Uluwatu look out over the cliffside for magnificent views of the ocean and horizon – the sunsets NEVER disappoint.

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

There is a good mixture of cultural and party events throughout the year in Bali. From mandatory silent days to VIP, super celebrity performances, there’s a lil bit of something for everyone.

Here are all the must-know cultural events in Bali:

• Nyepi : As previously mentioned, Nyepi is the Balinese New Year that happens most commonly in March (but is dependent on the Balinese calendar). There are many celebrations in the lead up to actual Nyepi day, including the Ogoh-Ogoh parade. Incredibly fierce and gruesome looking monsters are paraded on the streets to intense, hypnotic music. It’s a breathtaking sight! The following day from 6am-6am the island closes – even the airport! You aren’t allowed to step out of your accommodation and are required to avoid any loud noise or open flames. It is a totally unique and fascinating celebration.
• Bali Spirit Festival : The Bali Spirit Festival is a seven-day wellness festival that hosts yoga lessons, dance and music performances, showcases arts, and offers holistic healing and spirituality workshops. If you are into wellness, this is the festival in Bali to try! It is most commonly held in May.
• Galungan and Kuningan : Galungan and Kuningan are 2 super important celebrations in the Balinese calendar. They are a celebration of the triumph of good over evil, and take place every 210 days. When these holidays roll around many businesses close, kids get holidays from school and the streets are decorated with incredible penjor .
• Ubud Food Festival : The amazing Ubud Food Festival is hosted during April showcasing the incredible food culture in Bali. From local businesses with traditional dishes to innovative, new concepts, the food festival has a whole range of things to try as well as classes, talks and workshops.
• Bali Arts Festival : A beautiful showcase of Balinese culture, the Bali Arts Festival has performances, workshops and many chances to learn about the magnificent, unique culture of the island. Its a long festival that runs from mid June through July.

Bali’s wet season is when tourist prices are lowest (October-April). However, you do put your holiday at risk of the rains, which is a bold move. Trying October or April/May can give you both clear skies and a lower price, and is (in my opinion) the better move.

When is the Rainy Season in Bali?

Rain can be expected all year round in Bali, however, the rainy season occurs between October and March, with January and February getting the most rainfall. There is a lot of expected rainfall, so brace yourself! Rains occur in short but heavy showers most of the time.

When is the Coldest Month in Bali?

Bali’s location just south of the equator means it is blessed with consistent temperatures all year round. Maximum temperatures average between 26°C and 28°C year-round.

When is the Worst Time to Visit Bali?

If you’re on a budget or wishing to avoid crowds, the worst time to visit Bali is during the peak season between June and August and over the Christmas/New Year period. If you wish to avoid rain, the worst time to visit is over the rainy season between December and March.

Don’t forget to slather on plenty of sunscreen , as the UV index can be high even with cloud cover later in the day.

By afternoon, when the probability of rain increases, I’m prepared with my waterproof gear . Carrying a lightweight but sturdy umbrella ensures I’m not caught off guard by sudden showers. A compact raincoat or poncho can also be invaluable when exploring Bali’s bustling markets or lush landscapes. I always recommend investing in good quality gear to avoid any discomfort.

For evenings that entertain less rain and more glimpses of the sunset, layering works wonders. It can get cooler, so a light jacket or shawl might come in handy. Also, as I frequently visit indoor attractions, having a cover-up for those air-conditioned spaces proves useful. Comfortable footwear that withstands puddles yet is stylish enough for a nice dinner is a must-have in my suitcase. I prefer water-resistant sandals or slip-ons that offer both convenience and protection.

Last but not least, keeping your electronics safe is crucial. A waterproof bag or case can save the day, ensuring your phone or camera is ready to capture Bali’s breathtaking views. A power bank is also a smart addition so you can keep your devices charged on the go.

1. Seminyak for Beach Time with Resort Retreats

If you go to the beach in rainy season, it is good to have cafes, restaurants, and your resort/hotel to retreat to when the rain comes. Seminyak has all of these, being the best beach resort area in Bali . It's also great for night life, better enjoyed in this hotter time of year.

There are plenty of things to do around the beach when the weather allows: swimming in permitted areas , surfing — beginners' at Petitenget, intermediate at Seminyak Beach, advanced at Echo Beach, sunset watching , and even horse riding .

And there's lots to do when the clouds gather and the showers blow in: Seminyak is one of the best areas for spas , seafood restaurants , trendy cafés , and cooking classe s.

2. The Jatiluwih Rice Terraces for Mirror-Like Tiers

November could be a good month to visit the World Heritage rice terraces at Jatiluwih, as they will begin to fill up with water after the first of the wet season rains. The coils of reflecting fields in the sunlight of the southern hemisphere summer are a sight to behold by mid-November . Palm trees and jungle on the mountainside provide shade and fresh greenery in the scenery.

The only November drawback for terraced field exploration is that paths become muddy after rain. Wear good walking footwear. The roads out from Ubud should still be in ok condition for the 2-hour journey in November.

3. Learn Balinese Cooking and Culture in Ubud

For rainy days you'll need some activities that will be less/un-affected by the weather. Ubud is the cultural capital of Bali with its art market and Royal Palace , and it is the best place to find a Balinese chef ready to teach you the ways of Balinese cuisine .

You would typically go out to a local market, experiencing first-hand the day-to-day local life, buy your fresh ingredients, then prepare them with expert guidance before eating your tasty creations.

4. Enter into Local Spiritual Culture at Tirta Empul Temple

It's always nicer to visit a temple in the sun, especially if one of its highlights is the sunset views, like at Uluwatu. Tirta Empul ('Holy Water Spring') Temple is one that can be visited even on a cloudy day, but rain would affect your visit, so try to avoid that.

It's only half an hour outside Ubud . Sarong hire is required at the entrance, and this is another part of stepping into the local culture.

Pura Tirta Empul's focal point is the Hindu cleansing pool where worshipers dip under the 30 spouts of water in turn . Clouds do nothing to dull the pious atmosphere of the crowds of local worshipers and interested onlookers. It's best visited with a local guide who can explain its traditions and what is going on.

Less Crowding and Cost in November in Bali

There is some pleasant weather in Bali in November, but it is definitely an off-season month , with corresponding price reductions. If you don't mind the humidity and moderate rain on one of every two days, then November could be your chance to enjoy Bali at a lower price.

Pack light, cool, quick-drying clothing. An umbrella will be handy to provide shelter from showers and sun. Sandals and cool, breathable footwear are generally recommended.

UV levels will be high, so pack plenty of sun cream, a sunhat, and good sunglasses. Insect/mosquito repellent may be required, especially in evenings and rural areas.

For Bali's Hindu temples and religious sites, bring some light longer clothing to cover arms and legs, which will also help to protect you from the sun and mosquitoes.

For hiking on rural (hillside terrace) paths comfortable walking shoes with a good grip are recommended.

• The Ultimate Bali Travel Guide for First Timers

To be honest with you I knew almost nothing about Bali before I visited. Sure, I’ve seen a million pictures of this dream island, I knew that every proper Instagrammer had been there at least once and I saw Eat, Pray, Love, but that was it.

If you are like me, I have some good news for you: this Bali travel guide for first-timers is everything you’re gonna need! In this post, I put together everything you need to know if you are traveling to Bali for the first time. So let’s dive in!

Bali is located in the Indian Ocean, it’s by far the most famous of the more than 17,000 islands of Indonesia. The island sits east of Java (the most populous island in the world) and west of Lombok.

I know it seems like a tiny island on the map but actually, Bali is pretty big: the distance is 145 km from west to east and 85 km from north to south. Apart from the main island, the Nusa Islands (Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida) also belong to Bali.

Bali is home to more than 4.3 million people. About 90% of the population are Balinese, the other ethnic groups are Javanese, Baliaga, and Madurese.

The official language is Indonesian, but many people use the Balinese language in everyday life. English is widely used as well due to the high level of tourism.

Indonesia is the biggest Muslim country in the world, accounting for 13% of the world’s total Muslims. One of the most interesting facts about Bali is that it’s the only exception, as the island is the only Hindu island in Indonesia.

Actually, this is not the standard Hindu religion, it’s rather a Balinese Hinduism: it’s kind of a mixture of local beliefs and Hindu influences.

Balinese people live in a magic world of people, spirits, gods, and demons. I was so surprised to see how deeply religious they are! There are over 20,000 temples in Bali and you can’t go anywhere without seeing countless offerings to the gods and spirits.

They seriously believe in karma, that life is governed by a system of cause and effect, action, and reaction. Their religion and culture are really interesting so try to learn about them as much as you can while you are there!

Although Bali used to have a free visa if you were visiting for less than 30 days, unfortunately, it’s no longer available.

They have a new Visa on Arrival (VoA) in place, and more than 90 countries can apply for this type of visa. In case you are coming from another country, you will need to apply for a different visa so make sure to check this in advance.

This new VoA costs 500,000 IDR ($33 US) and you can stay with this on the island for a maximum of 30 days. The visa can be extended once for another 30 days (this has an additional cost of course).

You can purchase the visa online in advance which I would strongly recommend. One thing you need to be aware of is that the visa must be used within 90 days from the date of issue, so don’t buy it earlier than 3 months from your travel date. Also, make sure to only purchase from the official website !

Don’t worry, if you can’t buy the visa online (the website doesn’t always work properly), you will still be able to do it at the airport after arrival. You’ll just have to wait in line first for the visa before proceeding to immigration.

Money in Bali

The official local currency in Bali is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR or Rp). The amounts in rupiah are usually very large because of all the zeros. $1 US is around 15,200 IDR.

Therefore the prices are often given with the thousands implied and left off of the end. So when someone says “one hundred”, they most likely mean 100,000 IDR (around $6.5 US).

Cash is the king in Bali, therefore you always need to carry around some cash in your pocket. You can generally pay with credit cards at most of the hotels and cafes in the urban area but you will need cash for everything else.

The largest denomination is the 100,000 IDR banknote so your wallet will always be stuffed with a lot of banknotes. Make sure you don’t bring your tiniest wallet with you!

You can easily find ATMs in the popular travel hubs but once you are out you will have a hard time finding a machine in the countryside. So it’s better to stack up on cash while you are in a more touristy area.

ATMs typically charge you a transaction fee for every transaction. Fortunately, it’s not that much but the bad news is that there is a daily withdrawal limit.

It can be different depending on what kind of ATM you use but it’s usually between 1.5-2.5 million IDR (around $100-170 US). So basically you have to pick up cash from an ATM almost every day (or you can use different credit cards if you have more).

Important note: Some ATMs deliver your cash first and your credit card after. If you are coming from a place that it’s the other way around you have to pay attention not to leave your card in the machine. Unfortunately, we managed to lose a credit card, most likely for this reason. So learn from our mistakes!

Of course, you can exchange all the major currencies into rupiahs at the airport or banks but you always have to pay a commission fee and the exchange rates are not always in your favor. Generally using an ATM is a better option but it’s really up to you.

Technically US dollars are not accepted in Indonesia, however, you can almost always use them in reality. You will always have to pay more in dollars (because you obviously can’t pay $1.2 US so you will pay 2), but it’s good to have a plan B if you accidentally run out of rupiahs.

Best Time to Visit Bali

Bali is located a few degrees south of the equator, therefore it has a tropical climate all year around. It means that the weather is always hot and humid and there are only two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.

Generally, the rainy season is between November and March but it can vary a bit from year to year. During this time it usually rains a couple of hours in the morning and a couple of hours in the afternoon so you can still have some rain-free hours during the day if you are lucky.

Nevertheless, I still wouldn’t recommend this period for traveling especially if you’re traveling to Bali for the first time.

Bali is always busy during holidays like Easter or Christmas. July and August are usually crowded too because of the national school holidays in Indonesia. So if you’re not a fan of mass tourism I would avoid these periods as well.

Based on all this, the best time to visit is May, June, or September. You will have pleasant weather with almost no rain and the beaches and famous sites will not be that crowded either.

October can still be a good time, we also visited at the end of October. We were really lucky with the weather because it only rained on our last day. On the other hand, our driver said that this time last year it was constantly raining all day long and it didn’t stop for days. So be careful with October, it can really be a hit or miss.

How Much Time Do You Need to Spend in Bali

Bali is one of the most breathtaking dream destinations in the world and you can easily spend months on the island without ever getting bored. If you’re traveling to Bali for the first time, it’s best to spend at least 2 weeks in Bali to be able to properly explore the island.

When we visited Bali for the first time, we spent 8 days on the island and it felt really short. We managed to cover all the famous sites but in exchange, we spent almost no time at the beach and we were extremely tired at the end. Needless to say, it was totally worth it!

How much time you need to spend in Bali also depends on what you want to see and do. If you are only looking for beautiful beaches and you wish to relax all day long, one week could be enough.

However, there are so many wonderful sites to explore and various activities to do, that you will need at least 2 weeks if you really want to see the best of Bali.

Luckily the cost of living in Bali is totally budget-friendly so if your time allows or if you’re a digital nomad, you can even make it your base for a few months.

Transportation in Bali

Public transportation.

Public transportation is basically non-existent in Bali. All right, this is not exactly true: there are some public minibuses called bemo. If you are in a really adventurous mode and you wanna try getting around like a local you can opt for a ride. But for real transportation, I wouldn’t consider this as an option.

Renting a bicycle is possible but Bali is far too big for biking around. However, if you wanna explore the countryside close to your accommodation it can be a great way to get around.

The cheapest and most popular way of transportation is renting a scooter. However, if you don’t have experience in scooter riding I wouldn’t recommend it.

Why? Because the traffic is crazy! Cars, scooters, chickens, dogs, all share the same lane and they are coming from every direction possible. No matter where you go, the streets are always full of scooters and the roads are often in a really bad condition.

Scooter accidents are not exceptional and trust me, you don’t want to spend your holiday lying in the hospital.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against scooters at all. I’m just saying you have to be really, really prepared and have a ton of experience before trying to get around this way. And please don’t forget about travel insurance! Unfortunately, accidents can happen anytime and it’s better to be prepared for that. After many hours of research, I decided to choose SafetyWing and I can honestly recommend them!

You can find a taxi practically anywhere and it works the same way as it does in Europe or America. In Bali, almost everyone is a taxi driver. Seriously. You will be constantly asked by the locals where are you headed and whether if you will need a ride. Everyone will be glad to take you anywhere.

There are two types of taxis in Bali: the Bluebird taxis and the rest. The Bluebird taxis always go by the meter and they are safe to use. They even have their own app which you can download and after registration, you can summon a taxi as you please.

The non-Bluebird taxis on the other hand are often corrupt and they usually play dirty tricks with the tourists, like claiming to have a broken meter or taking you on a long road to pay more.

Private driver

I think having a private driver in Bali is the best option ever, especially it will be your first time in Bali and you don’t have any experience in scooter riding. It is generally more expensive than renting a scooter but in exchange, it takes away all the stress and you don’t have to worry about transportation during your stay.

We also decided to hire a private driver and I’m so glad we did! I received a recommendation from another Hungarian girl and that’s how we found Putu . He is the sweetest guy ever!

I contacted him while we were still at home. As I mentioned before I’m a big planner so I’ve already planned most of our itinerary before we first spoke.

Therefore we only needed to finalize the program I had in mind and he helped me organize every little detail. So by the time we arrived in Bali we already had a perfect itinerary and everything was taken care of.

How does it work in real life?

To be honest I had no clue how does it work in real-life and I received many questions about it so I will share my experience. When we arrived at the airport Putu was already there, waiting for us. He took us to our hotel (since it was already late in the afternoon) and we agreed on which time he should pick us up the next day.

The next morning he picked us up as we agreed and from that point, he was always with us until he took us back to the hotel at the end of the day. He drove us from location to location and while we were away exploring he waited for us in the car or spent the time with other drivers (who were waiting for their clients as well).

Yes, even when we were out for hours! Sometimes he even joined us in exploring the area so he could tell us stories about the place and Balinese life in general.

He was really flexible with the timing as well. We wanted to do a lot of sunrise tours so he usually picked us up very early. And by that, I mean very, very early.

Like 1 am or 3 am. Yes, you’ve read it right! (I know, you must think I’m crazy. Wait until you see my sunrise pictures!) The only general rule is that they don’t work more than 14 hours a day which is totally understandable.

Long story short, I really can’t recommend enough to have a private driver. Everything was just so perfect!

What to Wear in Bali

Despite Bali being a very religious island, there is no strict dress code for tourists. The only exceptions are the religious sites where you always have to wear a sarong (and a scarf if your shoulders are not covered by your clothes). Don’t worry, if you don’t own a sarong you can always rent it for a small amount of money at every religious site.

As I mentioned before, the weather in Bali is always hot and humid. Therefore you will most likely stroll around in shorts and T-shirts or dresses. Try to pack lightweight cotton and loose clothes! A beach hat or baseball cap is also a good idea to protect your head from the sun.

Regarding shoes, you can almost always wear flip-flops or sandals. But having a comfy sneaker in your suitcase is a huge bonus if you wanna go for a hike. If you plan to hike Mount Batur you should prepare with some warm clothes too!

I know it sounds weird to pack a jacket and a warmer sweater for Bali, but trust me, you’re gonna need it.

Best Places to Visit in Bali + Where to Stay in Bali

There are just so many things do to and see in Bali that I can go on and on for hours without ever repeating myself. Since this is a Bali travel guide for first-timers I will give you a rough overview of the different areas of Bali including the best places to visit and the best places to stay in each area.

The southern side of Bali is the most touristy area on the island. Denpasar (the capital city of Bali) is located here together with the Ngurah Rai International Airport. South Bali is packed with beautiful beaches, posh cafes, fancy restaurants, and cool party places.

Where to stay in South Bali

As I mentioned before the southern side of the island is the most touristy area so you will find a wide range of hotels to choose from. If you’re traveling to Bali for the first time I would recommend staying at either Seminyak or Kuta but Canggu , Uluwatu and Jimbaran could be a great option as well.

Best places to stay in Seminyak

However, if you want to have a more unique Bali experience staying in East Bali can be great for you! You will find many amazing hotels in the area, the best places to stay are either Candidasa (close to the beach) or Sidemen (more inland with an amazing view over the volcanos).

How much did you pay the driver each day to stay with you for the whole day? Or how much did you end up paying him in total and for how many days? I’m curious because I might do that too when I visit! It’s a great idea!

We typically paid around 600-800k IDR (42-56 USD) for one day depending on how far did we go from our hotel. It was a price per car so it would have been the same for 4 people but we were just the 2 of us. We were there first in October 2018 so these are the prices from that time. When we visited again in March 2020 we didn’t go for a trip so I don’t know the exact prices now but you can always ask our driver, Putu 🙂

Hey! First of all, thank you so much for your lovely comment 🙂 Dubai is the biggest hub for travelers heading to Southeast Asia so I think that’s a great route. Honestly, since you are flying internationally, I’m not sure I would leave the airport. You need to be there at least 2-3 hours before your flight to Bali departs which leaves you a lot less time to explore, plus you need to stay on top of every regulation to be able to enter Dubai. That being said, since DXB is only a 15-minute drive from the Burj Khalifa, I’m sure I would pick that! You can go up to the top, or just stroll around the tower. You can also see the Dubai Fountain, the Wings of Mexico, and the Dubai Mall too because they are all in one place. Happy travels!

Hey! To be honest, Bali is not really a good place for people with limited mobility. For instance, most of the time there is no pedestrian walkway by the streets, most waterfalls are hidden deep inside a jungle and some beaches are also only reachable via stairs. That being said, you can still visit some incredible places that are easier to reach but you’ll definitely need to let go of many places. I recommend hiring a driver who can take care of your transportation and he can also help with questions about specific attractions.

Yes, you can take your kid, many people travel to Bali as a family holiday so it will be all good 🙂 Candidasa is quite far away from the main Bali attractions, it’s a great base to explore the east part of the island but I would recommend diving your time between Candidasa and one/two more central locations. Well, November is technically the start of the rainy season but it’s different each year so nobody can tell you how it will be this year. Normally it only rains a few times a day but it’s really a draw of luck. Sorry, I don’t have any experience with Indian rupees. Hope you will have an amazing trip!
