Kerala bus accident: Around 40 people were also injured in the crash, police said.
Nine people, including five students, were killed after a private tourist bus hit a state-run KSRTC bus from behind at Vadakkenchery in Kerala's Palakkad, Kerala Road Transport Minister Antony Raju said on Thursday.
The minister said the accident occurred around 11.30 PM on Wednesday when the private bus, which was travelling at a high speed, while attempting to overtake a car, hit the rear end of a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus.
"Both the buses went off the road as a result. Nine persons, including five students and a teacher, were killed in the accident," he told the media.
The minister also said that the preliminary view was that the accident occurred due to the high speed of the private bus and the negligence of its driver.
He said the KSRTC bus was going from Kottarakkara in Kerala to Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and had 81 passengers, of whom three died in the accident.
The private bus was carrying 42 students and 5 teachers of Baselios Vidyanikethan Senior Secondary School in Ernakulam, who were on a pleasure trip.
State Local Self Government Minister M B Rajesh, who visited the hospital in Palakkad where the injured were admitted, told reporters that four of them were in serious condition, but the rest were fine.
Meanwhile, state Revenue Minister K Rajan told the media that everyone was in shock regarding what happened.
He said there will be an investigation to ascertain how and why the accident happened and strict measures would be needed to be put in place for preventing such incidents in the future.
Mr Rajan said a cabinet meeting will be held to consider providing compensation to the families who lost loved ones in the accident and that counselling may have to be provided to the students who lost close friends and a teacher in the tragic incident.
One of the students told a TV channel that the private bus was going at a very high speed and then rammed into the rear right side of the KSRTC bus and then toppled over.
"There was blood everywhere. We do not know what has happened to some of our friends and teachers who were in bad shape," he said, breaking into tears.
Another student said that she was watching a film when the accident occurred and someone landed on top of her as the bus toppled over.
"Someone pulled me and another girl out from the bus. But the girl sitting close to me could not be pulled out until much later," she said.

5 schoolkids among 9 dead in Kerala crash
Police said the accident took place, when the tourist bus was driving at 97 km per hour and hit the rear end of the state-run bus while attempting to overtake a car along the Walayar-Vadakkancherry road. The deceased include five students, a teacher and three KSRTC passengers.
Nine people, including five schoolchildren, were killed, and 22 sustained injuries after a speeding tourist bus rammed into a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus, at Vadakkencherry in Palakkad district in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
“The tourist bus was cruising at a high speed and lost control and hit the KSRTC bus in the rear. We will strengthen safety norms in all private buses,” said transport minister Antony Raju, who ordered an inquiry into the mishap. The minister said school authorities have also ignored the transport department’s directive to get the tour vehicle inspected and verify the track record of the driver before contracting a carriage for the tour. The driver of tourist bus, J Joemon, who was absconding after the mishap, was later arrested, an official added.
Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, the Kerala high court rapped the state government over road safety protocols and directed the transport safety officials to appear before it on Friday. “Issuing circulars is of no use, take action,” said Justice Devan Ramachandran, terming the accident “heart-breaking”.
Officials familiar with the matter said the tourist bus was carrying 42 schoolchildren and five teachers. A survivor said some of them complained about the high speed, but the driver brushed it aside saying: “I am an experienced master driver.”
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among several who condoled the deaths. The PM has also announced ₹ 2 lakh ex gratia for the kin of the deceased and ₹ 50,000 for the injured.

Nine people were killed in an accident that occurred near Vadakkenchery in the Palakkad district of Kerala.
A private tourist bus carrying students from Baselios Vidyanikethan School in Mulamthuruthy, Ernakulam, crashed into a state-run KSRTC bus.
Among those who died were five students, a teacher and three passengers of the KSRTC bus.
Those injured in the accident are admitted to the Thrissur Medical College. The police said the casualty numbers are likely to go up.
The incident occurred around 11.30 pm on Wednesday at the Anjumoorthy Mangalam bus stop on the Walayar-Vadakkencherry national highway.
The tourist bus was carrying students from the school to Udhagamandalam in Tamil Nadu.
As per local reports, the accident occurred as the tourist bus tried to overtake a car. According to eyewitnesses, the tourist bus was speeding.

“The tourist bus driver was tired and he took the trip straight after returning from Velankanni,” a parent told Manorama News.
The KSRTC bus driver told reporters: “The tourist bus came at a high speed. Despite it hitting our vehicle, it travelled nearly 300 metres and fell into the marshy land below the road. When the bus hit ours, I panicked and at that moment I couldn’t even understand what was happening.”
Among the three passengers who died on the KSRTC bus was 24-year-old basketball player Rohit Raj.
Raj played had played for the Pathanamthitta district team and was part of the Mar Ivanios College in Thiruvananthapuram.
Among the five students who died were three girls and two boys. The presence of rain and the bus falling into a marshy land below the road made the rescue operation difficult.
Government response
Road Transport and Motor Vehicles Minister Antony Raju told reporters that a complete investigation would be conducted into the incident.
He explained: “The KSRTC bus was going from Kottarakkara to Coimbatore. There were 51 passengers on the bus and the tourist bus carrying students from Ernakulam Baselios school had 41 students and five teachers.”
He added that the primary information available to him was that when the tourist bus tried to overtake a car, due to the speeding it hit the KSRTC bus from behind.
Minister MB Rajesh, Palakkad MLA Shafi Parambil, and Palakkad District Collector Mrunmai Joshi also reached the spot and evaluated the situation.
Shafi Parambil MLA in a Facebook post wrote “…The post-mortem proceedings have begun. The bodies of six people, including five students and one teacher, will be taken together to Mar Baselius Vidyaniketan School in Mulanthuruthy and kept for public viewing. The mortal remains of the remaining three will be taken directly to their homes.”
High court takes suo motu cognisance
Initiating suo motu proceeding in the wake of the incident, a Kerala High Court division bench comprising Justice Anil K Narendran and Justice PG Ajithkumar sought a report from the police and the Motor Vehicle Department on the accident.
The court also asked about the flashy lights and sound systems that were banned, but were being used in the bus.
In a June ruling this year, the court stated that high-power audio systems with multiple boosters and power amplifiers that produce loud noise could not be used in motor vehicles.
The court also impleaded the transport commissioner, who is also the road safety commissioner, as an additional respondent to a pending case regarding the repairing of roads in the state.
According to Livelaw, Justice Devan Ramachandran observed that the recurrence of accidents was due to the lack of strict enforcement of the law. “The roads in Kerala will become killing fields if this is allowed to go unseen,” stated the court.
The matter has been listed on 7 October for further consideration. The court also directed the road safety commissioner to be present in court on Friday.
PM expresses grief, offers compensation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident. A tweet by the PMO read “PM @narendramodi has expressed grief on the loss of lives due to an accident in Kerala’s Palakkad district. He extends condolences to the bereaved families and prays for a quick recovery of the injured. [sic]”
He also stated in another tweet that ₹2 lakh would be provided from the PMNRF to the next of kin of each of the deceased, and ₹50,000 would be provided for each of the injured.

The official Twitter handle of the Governor tweeted him as saying: “Shocked to know of the tragic death of 9 people including 5 schoolchildren in the bus mishap on Walayar-Vadakkanchery highway. My heartfelt condolences. May God help the bereaved families to overcome the grief. [sic]”

The 12.76 km Aroor - Thuravoor stretch of National Highway 66, where construction of India's longest elevated highway is currently underway, is considered a deathtrap for motorists and pedestrians alike. According to Jagratha Samithi, a committee formed by people in the area, over 22 lives have been lost to accidents on the stretch since construction began in April 2023.
People in the area allege a lack of preparatory measures by the National Highway Authority of India resulted in improperly tarred sections with slopes and potholes posing a danger to two-wheeler riders, often causing them to go off-balance and sometimes even ending in fatal falls.

A deadly bus accident that killed nearly a dozen children on a study tour to Subang in West Java has led experts to call on the government to impose stricter safety measures for buses and transportation providers to avoid similar incidents in the future.
The bus carrying 61 students from Lingga Kencana vocational high school (SMK) in Depok, a West Java city on the outskirts of Jakarta, crashed into oncoming traffic and rolled over on Saturday on a hilly road in Subang, some 140 kilometers away from the school.
The bus was thought to have experienced brake failure, preventing it from slowing down when traveling downhill.
Nine students and one teacher on the bus were killed in the accident, while 27 students were heavily injured. A bystander was also killed.
In its preliminary investigation, the Transportation Ministry found that the bus skipped roadworthy inspections and its permit to transport passengers had expired on Dec. 6 of last year.

“[Having no license means] the vehicle was not subjected to a periodic [roadworthy] test every six months, despite [the test] being required [for all passenger buses] in existing regulations,” Land Transportation Director General Hendro Sugiatno said on Sunday, as quoted by Antara.
Hendro urged transportation providers across the country to complete the test every six months, saying negligence that resulted in a fatal crash could result in the driver being penalized with a six-year prison sentence and a Rp 12 million (US$746) fine.

Country singer Hardy treated for 'significant injuries' after tour bus flips over
Country singer and songwriter Hardy was hospitalized with "significant injuries" after his tour bus flipped over following a performance in Bristol, Tennessee, on Saturday, he tweeted Sunday.
The singer, whose full name is Michael Wilson Hardy, was released from the hospital and is expected to recover, but the bus driver remains hospitalized, Hardy said in the tweet, adding that four people were on board at the time of the accident, all of whom were treated for "significant injuries."
A preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol identified the driver as James Hudson, 59, and the passengers as Noah Brown, 36, and Tanner Gallagher, 32. Hudson was wearing a seat belt, according to the report, which said that none of the passengers were.
"Our friend, and bus driver needs your prayers as he is still in the hospital," Hardy tweeted of Hudson. "His family is with him while he is being treated and we're all pulling and praying for him."
"I've been released from the hospital, but ordered by doctors to recover for the next few weeks which may cost us at a couple of shows," he continued. "My team and I will keep the fans updated on that as I rest in the coming days."
The conditions of Brown and Gallagher were not immediately clear.
The bus veered off the right of Interstate 40 and flipped over onto its left side, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol report.
Hardy had performed at the Country Thunder Music Festival in Bristol, a city about 300 miles east of Nashville, on Saturday night, according to the festival's website.
He is scheduled to perform Saturday in Arlington, Texas, on fellow country singer Morgan Wallen's tour, according to Hardy's website .It is unclear whether the performance will go on.
Hardy was named songwriter of the year at the Academy of Country Music Awards this year. His third and most recent album, "Hixtape: Vol. 2," was released last year.
The Country Thunder festival's Twitter account posted a message of support for Hardy and his team.
"HARDY and his crew have become close members of our festival family, and we are praying for full recoveries for everyone involved in last night’s accident," the tweet read .
Bristol Motor Speedway, the venue that hosted the festival, also tweeted a message of support: "Please keep our friends HARDY and his road crew in your thoughts and prayers for a full and swift recovery."
Hardy concluded his tweet by praising the authorities who responded to the scene.
"God bless our medics and local and state officials for their quick response and incredible service," he wrote.
