Oslo Cruise Port Guide | 10 Best Things To Do In Oslo, Norway

Oslo Harbour

Welcome to Oslo cruise port!

Oslo, the capital of Norway and its biggest city is the oldest capital in Scandinavia and has been considered one of Europe’s most expensive cities. This compact city is well known for its many museums, art galleries, wide green spaces, and ultra-modern, eclectic architecture. When visiting Oslo port, it’s advisable to be on the outer decks of the ship an hour before arrival, so you can enjoy the beautiful landscape while cruising through the Oslo Fjord. In this article, read about:

  • Oslo cruise port (Oslo cruise terminal, getting around, helpful info)
  • 10 best things to do in Oslo port and best Oslo shore excursions

Oslo Cruise Port

Oslo cruise terminal has two cruise ship piers both located at the city center, within a 15-minute walk from Karl Johan Gate , the main street. Cruise ships dock at Akershus Pier , where you’ll find a Tourist information center, free Wi-Fi, shops, tax refund services, restaurants, and cafes.

At the Tourist information center, you can take free city maps, change your money, and get information about the local transport, Hop on Hop off the bus, Oslo fjord boat cruises, and other tourist attractions. The taxi rank is right outside the pier, however, keep in mind that taxis in Oslo can be very expensive.

The cruise port is very scenic and already from the port, you can admire the imposing, 13th-century Akershus Fortress, housing two military museums and event spaces. You can also spot City Hall, the Nobel Peace Center, and the Opera House from the port.

Getting Around & Local Transportation

  • Public transportation in Oslo is very reliable and is operated by the Ruter company. Ruter’s tickets are valid for buses, trams, subways, ferries (not the Bygdøy ferry), and local trains. Check the timetables on the Ruter’s website or at the Tourist information center once you arrive.
  • Tram line #12 is located 500 m from the Oslo cruise terminal, and you can use it to get to Vigeland Park.
  • Bus #30 is also located within a 5-minute walk from the pier (at the Rådhuset bus stop, right by the City Hall), and you can use it to get to the Bygdøy peninsula, where the city’s main attractions are located: Viking Ship Museum, Kon-tiki Museum, the Fram Museum.
  • You can use the same tickets for all types of public transport (bus, train, tram, metro, ferry – except for the Bygdøy ferry), and they need to be pre-purchased at the Tourist information center on the pier, or any kiosk, Ruter’s sales point or ticket machine. Tickets bought on the tram/bus are more expensive than the ones purchased at the kiosk.
  • The local currency in Norway is the Norwegian krone (currency code: NOK; symbol KR). 1 USD equals 10.55 KR. Credit cards and the local currency are widely accepted. See the currency converter
  • Taxis are available at designated stations and they are mostly metered. However, taxi rates in Oslo are one of the highest in Norway. Credit cards can be used to pay for taxis, just make sure to inform the driver at the start of the trip if this will be your method of payment. Alternatively, to avoid paying for taxis, you can use public transport, book a shore excursion , or explore the city on your own.
  • Oslo Hop on hop off sightseeing buses are available within a 5-10 minute walking distance from the Oslo cruise terminal. Wherever your ship docks (there are a few other piers close by without any facilities), it is easy to reach Hop on hop off bus stop. The bus stop is Akershus Fortress and Castle/Cruise Ship Terminal. The loop takes 70 minutes and it includes stops at major city attractions: the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, the Fram Polar Ship Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum, the Viking Ship Museum, the National Opera House, the Historical Museum, the Norwegian Parliament, the Nobel Peace Center, Karl Johans Gate, and others. Check out Oslo Hop on Hop off bus tours on Viator and Get Your Guide
  • The ferry to the Bygdøy Peninsula operates between March and October. It departs every 30 minutes from City Hall Pier 3, located a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal. It’s highly recommended to purchase the tickets at the ticket office at the ferry terminal because onboard the ferry you’ll pay more.  The ferry has 2 stops: 1st stop Dronningen – Norwegian Museum of Cultural History and Oscarshall; 2nd stop Bygdøynes – Kon-Tiki, Fram and Norwegian Maritime Museum. Ruter’s regular public transportation tickets do not apply on the ferry to the Bygdøy Peninsula. The ferry is free with the Oslo Pass.
  • Get the Oslo Pass and access more than 30 museums and attractions, free public transport (zones 1 and 2), discounts and special offers at shops and restaurants, and much more. Book Oslo Pass online
  • Oslo Airport is located 48 km/30 miles (a 40-minute drive) northeast of Oslo cruise port.
  • Book a private transfer to/from the port of Oslo

Discover Oslo on a cruise: what to do and what to see

Ei velkomen til Oslo – The capital of Norway is, for me, one of the most relaxing cities in the world. Oslo has almost 300,000 inhabitants and is the largest city in Norway.

Less than 50 meters from the cruise terminal is the Akershus Fortress. From here there is a splendid view of the fjord. Leaving the Akershus Fortress through the main entrance, you will reach the Royal Mounted Police School. Here the animals are free to roam and enjoy the space.

Leaving the school on the right and continuing straight on you’ll reach the Opera House that emerges near the sea like a big iceberg, which you can climb. In this neighborhood there is a new large residential area that is being developed.

Not far from the Opera is the central station with shops and restaurants. Here you can take a short break for a beer: a 0.6 liter glass of “Hansa” costs 9 euros!

Oslo in crociera

Oslo in crociera

Oslo in crociera

Keeping the train station on the right you’ll reach the center of the city. Karl Johans Gate Street is the main street running through the city. It ends directly at the Royal Castle. It is not possible to visit the inside of the Castle, but in summer months it is possible to visit the Royal Gardens for free. With the Castle now behind you, you’ll walk again down Karl Johans Gate Street: on your left there is the University and the Parliament Building. In front of the Parliament a side street on the right leads to the Town Hall, a building that is not particularly beautiful… Up close you can see many decorations, images and statues. The interior of the Town Hall can be visited.

Oslo in crociera

Back at the port it is possible to take a ferry from the port and reach the “museum” island of Bygdøy featuring the Fram Museum, the Kontiki Museum and more. It is an ideal place for a beautiful panoramic view over the city.

Obviously, I have to mention visiting the Holmenkoll hills. You can get there by public transportation or by booking a guided tour.I hope I have been able to give you a small taste of my favorite city.

Cruise Port Guide Oslo – Norway: docked

In Oslo you will be docking. There are a couple of different docking options, but most of them are pretty close and at a very convenient location. Sometimes it is already possible to check your docking location online at: http://www.oslohavn.no/en/passengers/passenger_traffic/cruise/

Only the Akershus pier has a terminal with maps, Tax Refund services, shops and wifi. The other docks do not have these facilities although maps are sometimes brought to the pier. All docks are about 1 km from the Karl Johan Gate (main street). The nice thing about all of the docks is that the city center is so close and most things are within walking distance from here.

There are 2 important attractions for which you will need transportation to get to. These are the Vigeland park and the Bygdoy island on which Viking ship museum, Kon Tiki Museum, Fram Museum and the Open Air Museum are located. Find out underneath how to get there.

Transportation

Oslo might just have the best local transport system and transportation option of Norway.

Public transportation system

There is no bus stop right outside of the port, but there is at about a 10 minute walk, depending on where you dock. See the map for the locations of the tram and bus stops. The 2 most important lines to remember on a visit to Oslo is tram 12 goes to the Vigeland park and back to the city. See map for its most convenient stops and bus 30 to Bygdoy where it will pass the Fram Museum, Kon Tiki museum, Open Air museum and Viking ship museum. These are the most important lines as most of the other attractions are in the city center within walking distance of the ship. Tickets for the public transportation system need to be pre-bought at the tourist information center or kiosk. It is about 35 NOK per ticket and you can pay with credit card. Find out more about public transport via: https://ruter.no/en/travel-planner/network-maps/

Taxis are generally in the morning available right outside the port. Official taxis you can recognize by their taxi sign. If there are no taxis there the security at the gates is usually able to call you one. Keep in mind though that taxis in Norway are expensive. Take into account it will cost you about 700 NOK (100 USD) per hour and 25 USD for an easy taxi ride of 10 minutes. But there are definitely other cheaper options available for you.

Hop on hop off bus

There is a hop on hop off bus available in Oslo. It doesn’t matter where you dock, these guys will make it work to pick you up. Hop on hop off bus is quit a nice way to get around the city. If you are planning to visit the place out of the city center this is a nice way to do it. Buy your ticket on the pier and hop on. The bus is wheelchair accessible. Keep in mind though that sometimes this service tends to sell more tickets than they have capacity and that could mean you might have to stand for a long time at a stop for the next available bus.

Oslo City Train Sightseeing

At the Akerhus pier there is a stop for a little trolley train. It takes you around for a city tour.

Destination and distance from port:

Oslo city center = +/- 1 km walk north

Karl Johan street (main street) = +/- 1 km walk north

Vigeland park = 4 km to the west, take tram 12

Viking ship museum = 5,5 km to the south west, take bus 30

Norks Folke museum = 5 km to the south west, take bus 30

Kon Tiki Museum = 6.5 km to the south west, take bus 30

Due to the mud and conditions the ships were almost completely in tact. The Oseberg ship is the jewel of the exhibition. It was found by a farmer in 1903. The excavation took 3 month and the restorations 21 years. 90% of the ship is made of the original timber. It now shines together with the other viking ships and viking exhibitions in the Viking ship museum. The museum is about 5,5 km south west of the port. Reach it by public bus 30.

Oslo, Norway

Oslo: tourist information

Situated at the head of the Oslofjord, Oslo is the oldest Scandinavian capital, and features a charming mix of old and new architecture, together with acclaimed museums, parks and monuments, making it a relaxing and rewarding holiday destination. The highlight of a visit to Oslo is the 13th century medieval Akershus Fortress, featuring creepy dungeons with dark, damp cells, magnificent banquet halls and ornate staterooms, and a charming chapel which contains the crypts of King Hĺkon VII and Olav V. It was used by the Nazis during WW II as a prison and place of execution but is now occupied by the Norway Resistance Museum, which has a variety of exhibits of Norwegian life under German occupation. The grounds surrounding the fortress are perfect for picnics and relaxation, and afford spectacular views of the city and harbor. Norway is famous for its artists, and two of them are celebrated in museums in Oslo. The Munch Museum contains a collection of more than 5000 drawings and paintings by Norway's most famous artist. Munch's most famous painting, The Scream, resides in the National Gallery. Nearby, Vigeland Museum and Park showcases the works of the renowned sculptor Gustav Vigeland amid a beautiful expanse of trees, grass, and ponds. Another artistic attraction is the National Theatre, with its superb rococo hall. Oslo has plenty of luxurious accommodations, excellent restaurants and charming cafes. The nightlife is numerous and varied, with bars, clubs and pubs to suit all tastes. A rewarding excursion can be made to the nearby Bygdřy Peninsula, located across the harbour from Oslo. It features a large open-air folk museum, maritime museums housing excavated Viking ships and Thor Heyerdahl's balsa raft Kon-Tiki; restored stave churches; and some pretty beaches. Further afield is the Nordmarka, a wilderness area on Oslo's northern border, and the quaint fishing village of Risor, with its picturesque harbour and island of Stangholmen. International airlines link Oslo with most major European cities, and transportation options into the city are numerous and reliable

How to see the best of northern europe on a scandinavian cruise.

Cruise ship passengers enjoy the view of Sweden’s Stockholm archipelago from the Royal Caribbean ... [+] ship ‘Serenade of the Seas.’

If you’ve ever wanted to dive into the culture of the Vikings or explore what makes people in the Nordic region the so-called happiest on earth, you could do a lot worse than book a Scandinavian cruise.

Scandinavia—and Norway in particular—is an expensive place to travel around, so a cruise can make financial sense for those seeking an introduction to the region. For one price, you get your travel, accommodation, meals, and entertainment covered.

Such a trip offers the opportunity to sample various Scandinavian travel highlights , whether you prefer the Scandinavian capitals, the stunning Norwegian fjords, or soaking up the atmosphere of beautiful islands and historic ports in the Baltic Sea.

Popular Scandinavian Cruise Itineraries

Many different types of itinerary can be advertised as Scandinavian cruises. Typically, they focus on the Nordic capital cities. Some may also include the highlights of the Baltic Sea region, including the Baltic countries and ports in the north of Germany and Poland.

With popular Norwegian fjords cruises together with midnight sun and northern lights tours to the north of Norway also available, there is a lot of diversity in Scandinavian cruises.

Scandinavian Capitals : Cruise itineraries starting in the U.K. or Germany and calling in at two or even all three of Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen have long been popular.

‘challengers’ reviews: does zendaya tennis movie score with critics, patriots select north carolina quarterback drake maye with no 3 pick in nfl draft.

The Nyhavn district of Copenhagen, Denmark, is a popular destination for cruise ship passengers ... [+] visiting Scandinavia.

Helsinki is often included on such itineraries. If you want to explore modern Scandinavia while gaining access to some of the region’s best museums, such an itinerary is a perfect choice.

Such itineraries tend to be shorter, and are a great introduction to both cruising and Scandinavia, with limited sea days and plenty to see and do while in port.

Baltic Sea : Longer Scandinavian itineraries often include stops at Baltic Sea islands and ports. The beautiful Estonian capital city, Tallinn, or the Latvian capital, Riga, are particular highlights, as are ports on the northern coastline of Germany and Poland.

For those interested in Viking history, look out for smaller ship itineraries featuring Visby on the wonderful island of Gotland .

One such trip is this 12-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises, which includes a visit to both Visby and Tallinn. Other highlights include a visit to Stockholm and Copenhagen, including an overnight stop in the latter.

The old city walls of Visby on Gotland island, a popular cruise port.

Norwegian Fjords : By far the most variety can be found in the Norwegian fjords region , with almost all major cruise lines operating at least some itineraries here. Although port calls in Flåm and Geiranger will soon be severely limited, many alternative ports will still be able to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Whether you prefer the action-packed ships of Royal Caribbean or MSC, or the smaller ships that can sail along narrower fjords, there will be a Norwegian fjords itinerary for you.

Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September.

British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary.

Midnight Sun : Although all summer cruises in the region will experience long summer days, specific midnight sun itineraries set sail for the far north of Norway to let guests experience the thrill of being outside with the sun in the sky at midnight. Many of these trips visit Honningsvåg, which allows guests to travel by bus to the North Cape.

Northern Lights : In recent years, Scandinavia—or more specifically Norway—has become a year-round cruising destination thanks to the growth in popularity of northern lights cruises .

These itineraries can be found heading north of the Arctic Circle between October and early April.

Planning Tips For Scandinavian Cruises

Cruising in Northern Europe offers a fantastic variety of excursions and experiences, from historical city tours to adrenaline-filled outdoor adventures.

The region’s love of the outdoors lifestyle means active experiences are easy to find, both through cruise line excursions and independent operators.

The high levels of English comprehension across the region means booking your own activities and exploring ports independently is much easier than in many other parts of the world. Even so, look for independent tours that take place earlier in the day to reduce any time-related risk.

No matter when you visit Scandinavia, pack for all weathers. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March.

Pack a versatile wardrobe. Layered clothing accommodates the region's variable weather, while specialized gear might be necessary for specific excursions.

Cruising And Sustainability

Prospective travelers should be aware of environmental concerns associated with cruising in this pristine region. The industry is moving towards sustainability, with initiatives to introduce zero-emission vessels in sensitive areas, particularly the UNESCO-listed Norwegian fjords .

Some local initiatives protesting against cruise travel have also gathered momentum, so cruisers should be aware of these issues before setting foot ashore.

  • April 26, 2024

Docked in gladstone

On Thursday, April 25, the Port of Gladstone welcomed the Scenic Eclipse II for its inaugural visit during its Chairman’s Voyage itinerary along Australia’s East Coast.

The ship docked at the Gladstone Ports Corporation’s (GPC) East Shores Precinct Cruise Terminal.

Scenic Eclipse iI’s visit coincided with ANZAC, the national day of commemoration of Australia and New Zealand for victims of war. Passengers were taken to a VIP area for the  Day Dawn Service, commencing at 5.30 am at Anzac Park.

The ship’s next port of all is Percy Islands, followed by Airlie Beach, Magnetic Island and Willis Island before the journey ends in Cairns on April 30.

The newest addition to The Scenic roup’s Discovery Yacht fleet, the Scenic Eclipse II carries 228 passengers and 176 crew. It recently arrived in Australia for a two-year season of sailings. oslo cruise calls

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Walter Biscardi, a 59-year-old travel agent based in Orlando. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I used to work in film, television, documentary, and marketing, and I ran two creative agencies in Atlanta for 25 years.

A few years ago, my wife and I turned my second passion, travel, into " Where's Walter Travel ." We specialize in travel planning services for cruises , group vacations, theme park tours, and company retreats.

We live in an Orlando rental, but I run the travel-planning business from a cruise ship for three months out of the year.

We started taking advantage of our remote working situation after the pandemic

In a few short years of working on cruise ships, I've noticed that more and more people are starting to do the same thing.

We predominantly cruise the Caribbean. Last year, our three months were spread over six different trips on the Royal Caribbean , Oceania , Virgin Voyages , and Carnival cruise lines. If it were up to me, I'd be at sea for six months a year, but my wife prefers three.

This year, we'll be back on Virgin Voyages in June and on the Sun Princess in October. We're planning a few more, too.

WiFi speed and reliability onboard ships have been game-changers

I don't always look for speed but rather consistency and reliability.

Even though the WiFi is reliable on most ships , it's still not perfect, and you need to manage your expectations. The WiFi on ships is satellite-based, so the signal will be slower if there's a lot of cloud cover. Rain may also temporarily cut it out completely.

The WiFi signal in rooms can be weak. When I get on board, I walk around public places, look at the ceiling, and find the repeaters , which amplify the router's signal . I park myself under a repeater to work, so at least I know I'm getting the fastest signal.

Video calls can be dicey, but voice calls over WiFi work well

Most of my work is using emails, social media apps, and a web browser, so I don't tend to have problems. The upload speed is the most difficult thing about working on a cruise ship.

Related stories

Working from a cruise ship might not be for you if you're required to upload a video to YouTube or be on video for 100% of your Zoom calls. Zoom with video turned off works well. I post TikToks all day, but uploading to YouTube will fail almost every time.

Turn off your cell service on the ship, even if you have unlimited roaming overseas. Phones use satellite maritime cellular, and it's ridiculously expensive. I've heard of people who have come home with $1,000 cellular bills because they didn't turn off their roaming.

I can typically make most of my calls over WiFi, but you won't be able to on some ships. Texting from ship to land usually works well if you're using the same type of phone as the person you're messaging, but when you're texting cross-platform, sometimes it doesn't work.

Finding power outlets can be challenging

Typically, if you need to put in a full day of work connected to power, you need to stay in your room. One tip to finding power when you're looking around public areas is to see where they plug in the vacuum cleaners.

I strongly recommend bringing a powerboard with multiple USB sockets. I have one with 10 USB connections, so I can charge my phone, GoPro, and other devices simultaneously.

Virgin Voyages ships are the most friendly for remote workers

The galley on a Virgin Voyages ship is set up like a coffee shop, with easily accessible power and USB sockets at the table. There are dozens of outlets, as they're inviting people to bring their laptops and work from the ship.

I usually upgrade to the premium WiFi option, which can cost anywhere from $19 to $39 per day on most lines, but Virgin only charges $10 per day to upgrade.

I work in an office at home, so working on a cruise is a big change

I operate at sea as I do on land, with the same office hours available to my clients other than when I know we're going on an excursion.

Cruise ships are comparable to remote working spaces, but they offer so much more. On a cruise, almost everything is included: breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, entertainment, and most amenities.

If I want to take a break from work, I go to the pool. When I finish for the day, I'll go to the theater to see a show.

Meeting places are usually free on a cruise ship. Generally, all you have to do is reserve a conference room. AV facilities are usually included too, although you may have to pay a setup fee.

Remember to be respectful — many people are on board for a vacation. I've been out by the pool and seen people taking business calls on speakerphone, which is ridiculously annoying.

I suggest picking at least one port on every cruise and make it a 'ship day'

About 75% of people will get off the ship at any port, so staying on board feels like you have the whole place to yourself.

Activities like the pools will still be open, and the spas will often discount their services by 20-40% on port days.

Of course, I still recommend getting off and exploring as much as possible — that's what cruises are for.
