In The Land Of Lama - The Great Ladakh Tour

MTA was a phenomenal company, and saw to my every request. As I traveled privately during a surge in the pandemic, there was added stress related with social distancing and testing, but MTA assisted me with finding test sites, transportation, and safe mask expectations. I wanted to visit several northern India sites within a short two week span, but they customized the trip for me in a manner that was action-packed, but not exhausting. The guides and drivers were knowledgeable and professional, and even allowed for me to explore some city sites on my own during free time. My process from start to finish was fluid and exceptional. Yes, I paid a chunk for this trip, but it was worth every rupee. I left feeling completely satisfied with my experiences, and MTA helped make it the trip of a lifetime.

Mystical Ladakh: A Cultural Expedition

Amazing tour! We are family of four, with 2 daughters (8 and 5 years old), who dared to go to Leh in December. We had a great time and learned a lot from our guide Lotus. He was very knowledgeable and always passionate to share and discuss about everything we asked (and with our girls there were a lot of questions). We were lucky with weather, as it was always sunny and not that cold during the day. We really liked our hotel (The Grand Dragon Ladakh) with great food and really nice cozy rooms. We highly recommend this tour!

I really enjoyed my tour. This is a very remote area with unique culture and nature. I 've been there at the beginning of April before the tourist season starts, so I enjoyed the absence of crowds. However, nights were very cold, some hotels did not have heating, so hot bottles were my best friends. During the day the weather were beautiful, sunny. I enjoyed snow on the passes we crossed. My guide and driver were excellent. People we met at the hotels demonstrated wonderful hospitality. The tour company that organized this travel experience was very good, professional and responded to all my requests. I was feeling so happy during this trip, in peace with nature and the world ????

The visits in Leh and to Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake were fantastic. The guide and driver were professional and the guide had good knowledge. I was very disappointed in two things, one the Ladakh Imperial hotel, rooms were good but the service was poor. The second thing was having to cross Changla Pass twice, the road is very very poor and it would have been possible to travel to Pandong from the Nubra valley on good roads, crossing the Changla pass only once.

The key to a successful and memorable Ladakh trip is acclimatization. If there is one most important of all Ladakh Travel tips that needs to be strictly adhered to and there is no compromise, it is acclimatization. You need a minimum of 24 hours to acclimatize to the high altitude conditions of Ladakh. It does not matter whether you are the fittest person or not. Everyone has to be acclimatized. Ladakh Travel Tip 6 – Drive Safe – Leave Early and Return Early

Hill driving is all about being safe. Always keep an hour or two as a buffer when you plan. Also, plan for any unfortunate eventualities. Keep the phone numbers of your hotel owners handy. The road conditions have improved in the last ten years. That doesn’t mean you have to drive rashly. Make sure your local driver also drives safely.

Leave early & reach early. This is the mantra for hill driving! Firstly, the sun rises very early in Ladakh compared to other parts of India except the North East. Secondly, as the day pass by, snow on the mountains will melt which may result in road blockages due to streams overflowing. Thirdly, it is good to return to base before sunset which can happen only when you leave early.

Please don’t be under the impression that you are travelling in summer and there is no need for woollens. Always carry woollen even in summer months. It gets very cold at night though sunny during the day. More so if you are staying in tents in places like Pangong, carry two good sets of woollen at minimum.

You will be spoilt for choices to take pictures! Ladakh is photogenic. Please don’t regret when your phone or DSLR memory becomes full and you don’t have anything as a backup. Ladakh is a fascinating place. Anyone who has once visited Ladakh can never forget its landscape, its people and the eternal beauty it hides between those colourful layers of mountains. Planning a trip to Leh has never been an easy task. With help from various sites, we were all set for the trip that we were waiting for so long! Here is a detailed report on our travel to Ladakh

The Best Leh Ladakh Itinerary for 10 days

Day 1 (baltal – kargil).

We completed our Amarnath Yatra successfully before we ventured for the anticipated trip to Leh. From Baltal, we hired a car to Kargil. We left the greenery of Baltal and entered the barren dusty mountain roads. The Zozila Pass said to be one of the most treacherous passes of India was just a glimpse of how the trans-Himalayan passes would be.We reached Kargil at the evening and rested for the night.

Day 2 (Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh)

The next morning we started for Leh. The journey to Leh was equally exciting. We got the first taste of the magnificent monasteries of Ladakh at Mulbek where the gigantic Maitreya Buddha stood towering over us.

We travelled and crossed the Fotu La and the Namik La passes. Just as we crossed the Namik La, we saw something that looked straight out of a Hollywood movie. The breathtaking Lamayuru Monastery stood there with all its glory. With meandering roads leading to the monastery, it was the ethereal beauty of the place that stood out. We were not able to stay the night at Lamayuru, but I can well imagine how enchanting the place would look at a full moon night!

After our visit to the Lamayuru, we headed towards Leh town. Leh in itself is a small and colourful town. The markets are bustling with activities during the day. There are numerous shops that sell Buddhist artifacts, statues of Buddha and other goodies. The Tibetan markets are also there selling garments, shoes, bags and any adventure gear you can think of. Well, many are branded, but I cannot assure you about the authenticity of the brands! And finally, there are shops selling junk dresses (Yes I call those funky, colourful dresses as them junk dresses) and pieces of jewellery as well as pashminas. Day 3 (Leh – Chang La Pass – Pangong Lake)

After a well-deserved rest, the next day we started for Pangong Lake. We had planned to stay the night near the Lake so that we can experience a night beside the lake. The road to the Pangong goes through the Changla Pass, another high trans-Himalayan pass. I was really excited to see the cute marmots on the way. These animals seemed so friendly! As I was looking for more marmots, we saw a glimpse of blue. Yes, that was the Pangong Lake, the huge lake which has only 40% of it in India. The Pangong Lake played hide and seek with us for some time before it revealed us to us in full glory. I had never seen such a shade of clear blue before! The azure lake and the golden mountain ranges at its back looked like a perfect picture postcard. I think the whole of this region is like a postcard at which you can stare for hours and marvel. We camped near the lake, enjoyed the changing colours of the lake at different times of the day and also had a campfire near the lake.  My nomadic heart truly was for a treat that day.

Day 4 (Pangong Lake – Hemis Monastery – Thiksey Monastery – Shey Palace – Leh Palace – Leh)

We were back from Pangong and while returning we visited the Hemis Monastery, Thicksey Monastery, Shey Palace and the Leh Palace along with the Sindhu Ghat. There are no words to describe the grandeur of the monasteries of the Leh. But what surprised me was the serenity of the Sindhu Ghat. A peaceful place where you can just sit with your legs in the waters of Sindhu and contemplate on the journeys you have taken, the sights you have seen.

Day 5 (Leh – Khardung La – Nubra Valley)

This day was reserved for Nubra Valley. To reach Nubra, we had to cross the world’s highest motorable pass the Khardung la. Not only the roads, but the weather also become treacherous at Khardung La. The sunny weather of Leh became gloomy once we were near the pass and suddenly snowflakes were all over me. It was snowing at Khardung La. Just imagine the feeling of standing at a height of about 18000 ft and experiencing snowfall! It is simply amazing.

We were in the midst of mountains and rugged terrains so long, but this day we saw stretches of sands and a black road among those sandy stretches. Nubra is one of the coldest deserts of the world and double-humped Bactrian camels are found only here apart from the Gobi desert. And then the colossal statue of Maitreya Buddha came to our sight. That was the Diskit Monastery- a place where the ancient and the modern stands to look at each other. At the mountain over the Shyok river stands the oldest monastery of Ladakh region, the Diskit Monastery and exactly in front of it, stands the 32 m Maitreya or the future Buddha, looking down at the Shyok river.

A ride on the camels simply completed our day. We stayed at Hunder for the night at a homestay. We were simply bowled over by the hospitality of the people there. The next morning we were all set to be back at Leh.

Day 6 (Nubra Valley – Leh)

The return from Nubra to Leh was equally long and arduous. After returning from Nubra Valley , it ews only roaming aroundthe streets of Leh for us.

Day 7 (Leh – Magnetic Hill – Alchi – Likir – Spituk – Leh)

A day of relatively lesser travel when we visited the monasteries near Leh – the Alchi, Likir, Spituk monastery. Each monastery had their own distinct charm and visiting them increased our thirst for knowing about them more. We travelled past the Magnetic Hill this day. and all that we heard about the Magnetic Hill was true! The car really moves ahead even though it is not being driven. The evening was spent viewing the sunset from Shanti Stupa and roaming around Leh markets.

Day 8 & 9 (Leh – Sarchu – Keylong – Manali)

The day to leave Leh had come. But we decided not to let the spirit of adventure die. We were all ready to set on the journey through the Leh- Manali Highway – the route which is there in every wayfarers’ bucket list. And truly so, the Leh- Manali route is simply grand and a saga. The scenery, mountains, terrains everything about this road is epic. We had a stopover at Keylong and reached Manali the next day.

The remarkable tour has a perfect ending, it was no less than a blockbuster. Due to time restraint, we did not visit the Tso Moriri and HanuDha. We plan to do that soon. It is so very true that Leh is like a mecca to all Indian travellers. The place has all the thrills and excitement. Once you visit Ladakh, you simply cannot stop raving about it.  The same is with us.

Day 10 (Manali)

Altitude: Leh is at a height of 11480 ft

Best Time to visit: June to September

The best way to visit Leh by road is to enter by the Srinagar-Leh highway and return by the Leh – Manali highway. This also helps in proper acclimatization.

ATMs: ATMs are found in Leh city. But carry cash when you are travelling to Pangong, Nubra or Tso Moriri.

• It is important to note that Leh only has connectivity from the leading operators of Airtel, BSNL, & Aircel. Riders who don’t have these connections do not have any other choice other than standing in the long queues of overcrowded STD booths or getting a connection from one of the above-mentioned operators.
• Though there are several ATMs at Leh, carry enough cash with you as the ATM you’ll find on Manali to Leh route is at Keylong.
• Applying for an Inner Line Permit will only cost you ₹200 and will give you access to remote places like that Tso Moriri, Chushul, Merak, Loma, Mahe, Hanle, and more. One can apply and get this permit from the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Leh from 9 am to 3 pm.

  2. Protected Area Permit (PAP)

Changthang Valley

Day 00: Arrival in Delhi(216m) Arrive in Delhi on your own and meet the Adventure Nation team and your fellow riders in the evening. In order to provide you the information regarding the expedition, it is essential that you participate in an orientation session. After the session, the bikes will be allotted so you may take it for a spin and check if it’s aligned to your riding style. Arrive at the decided location early in the morning and meet our team and your fellow riders. After a quick briefing, we flag off from Delhi and start riding on the National Highway 1. Today’s journey will take you through places like Panipat, Karnal and Kurukshetra. Arrive in the city beautiful and check in to your accommodation. Stay overnight in a hotel. Day 02: Chandigarh to Manali(2050m) | 280km      Grade/Duration - Easy/Approx. 9 Hours Altitude Gain - 1729m Highlights - Entering the Himalayas, Riding along Beas River  

After having an early breakfast, check out from the hotel and hit the road. Initially, we ride through the plains in the State of Punjab and after riding for a few hours, we enter the State of Himachal Pradesh, also known as the ‘Land of the Gods.’ We will pass through the towns of Bilaspur and Mandi. After crossing Bhuntar, the ride gets exciting as we ride along the Beas River until we reach Manali. Later in the evening, go out and explore the colorful lanes of Old Manali, if time permits. Stay overnight in a hotel. Day 03: Manali to Jispa(3200m) | 140km      Grade/Duration - Moderate/Approx. 8 Hours Altitude Gain - 1150m Highlights - Solang Valley, Rohtang La(Pass)  

Today, we are going to ride towards Jispa on the much-celebrated Manali-Leh Highway. Leaving early is pivotal as we need to cross the mighty Rohtang Pass (3978m) early in the day, before it gets too crowded. After crossing Rohtang, the landscape changes drastically as we enter the Lahaul and Spiti District. The lush green grasslands disappear and the barren slopes of the cold dessert take over. We continue the ride towards Jispa crossing the quaint mountain towns of Sissu and Keylong. Arrive at the destination early in the evening and have an adventurous overnight stay in tents. Day 04: Jispa to Sarchu(4290m) | 90km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 6 Hours Altitude Gain - 1090m Highlights - Deepak Tal, Baralacha La, Riding along Tsarap River  

Keep yourself completely hydrated by drinking a tonne of water as we are going to spend the night at above 4000mt altitude. Today’s ride is one of the shortest rides of the expedition but the adrenaline level remains high as the terrain is full of adventure. After crossing Darcha, keep riding on the Manali-Leh Highway towards Deepak Tal. The road from here starts to ascend steeply towards the treacherous Baralacha Pass(4890m), negotiating Zing Zing Bar and crossing the stunning emerald lake, known as Suraj Tal. Just after crossing Baralacha, halt for some time and have some well-deserved lunch near Bharatpur. We continue our ride to Sarchu on the same road, although the terrain gets changed quite a bit along the way and Tsarap River is visible on the left side carving and raging through the mountains. Arrive in Sarchu later in the day and be prepared for a rather uncomfortable overnight stay in a tent. Day 05: Sarchu to Leh(3500m) | 250km       

Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 8 Hours Altitude Loss - 1090m Highlights - Gata loops, Nakee La, Lachung La, Morey Plains, Tanglang La, Riding along Indus River  

Start riding after an early breakfast as today’s going to be a long but exciting day of riding. Water-Crossings are a common sight on the road while riding to Leh and the ideal time to cross them is early in the day. Just after leaving Sarchu, we start to ascend towards Nakee La(4769m), crossing the zig-zag Gata Loops which is a series of 21 hairpin bends within a span of just 7km. The descent from Nakee La is barely even finished and the ascent towards another high pass, Lachung La(5059m) begins. The descent from Lachung La brings us to the town of Pang(4600m) where we halt for Lunch. The landscape starts to change after crossing Pang and the plateau of Morey Plains starts and stretches for 45km. Closer to the end of the plains, we start climbing the Tanglang La(5328m), the highest motorable pass on the Manali-Leh Highway. After crossing the 3rd high pass of the day, continue riding towards Leh along the mighty Indus River on the left side. Reach Leh in the evening and relax in the hotel. Day 06: Rest Day in Leh Replenish your energies with a healthy breakfast and enjoy a relaxing day in Leh. The first half of the day is saved for a regular check-up of the bikes and the rest of the day can be spent visiting a few sightseeing places in and around the city. Stop by the Leh Palace and enjoy the splendid panoramic views of the Stok Kangri mountain range from the terrace. You may also choose to visit the Shanti Stupa and the local market to indulge in some shopping and try out the Ladakhi cuisine at the local eateries. Spend the night at the hotel. Day 07: Leh to Nubra (3048m) | 160km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 7 Hours Altitude Loss - 452m Highlights - Khardung La, Diskit Monastery  

After a rather relaxed day in Leh, we continue our expedition and start riding towards Nubra Valley through what’s considered the highest motorable road in the world i.e. Khardung La(5359m). The road towards the pass is well paved and tarred till the checkpoint near South Pullu and after crossing the checkpoint, the road starts to get slushy with loose rocks on one side. Get yourself clicked after reaching Khardung La and hit the road quickly as it is not safe to spend much time on top of the pass due to the high altitude and thin air. We stop for a quick lunch after climbing down from the pass and then continue our journey. After riding for another couple of hours, we make a brief stop to visit the 32m high Maitreya Buddha statue in Diskit Monastery. Our arrival in the valley will be welcomed by the white sand dunes and the sightings of the double-hump Bactrian camels grazing. Stay overnight at the hotel/campsite. Day 08: Nubra to Pangong(4250m) | 260km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 8 Hours Altitude Gain -1202m Highlights - Riding along Shyok River, Water Crossings   

After having breakfast, we start riding towards the most photographed destination in Ladakh, Pangong Lake. Despite the fact that we are not going to cross any high pass today, the ride should be quite interesting as we ride on the much less traveled road via Shyok. Most of our ride is going to be along the beautiful Shyok River and through the villages like Agham, Shyok, Durbuk, and Tangste. The road remains slushy along with some exciting water crossings and rocky terrain so being cautious is important. After crossing Durbuk, the last stretch of the ride is going to be along the lake. From the very first glimpse, the lake leaves an everlasting impression on the visitors. Get yourself photographed and just admire the wonder that is this shimmering blue lake. Overnight stay in tents.  Day 09: Pangong to Leh(3500m) | 150km      Grade/Duration - Moderate/Approx. 5 Hours Altitude Loss - 750m Highlights - Chang La, Druk White Lotus School  

Wake up to an enchanting sunrise over Pangong Tso and recommence your Ladakh expedition. Today we are going to ride the same route that we rode yesterday and after crossing Durbuk, we will start climbing the third highest motorable pass in the world, Chang La(5360m). After crossing Chang La, we halt for Lunch. After eating, we start our journey to Lah via Karu from where we start riding on the Manali-Leh Highway. Just before reaching Leh, we are going to pass through the Thiksey monastery and the popular Druk White Lotus School. There will be a short halt to explore the monastery and take some pictures. After riding for approximately an hour, we will arrive in Leh for the second time during the expedition. Stay Overnight in a hotel. Day 10: Leh to Kargil(2676m) | 220km      Grade/Duration - Moderate/Approx. 6 Hours Altitude Loss - 824m Highlights - Fotu La, Namika La, Lamayuru Monastery  

The ride from Leh to Kargil takes relatively less time as the roads are in pretty decent condition. We bid adieu to Leh and follow the mighty Indus River towards Kargil on the Leh-Srinagar Highway. The landscape is mesmerizing all along the way as we ride through a spectacular moonscape to reach Lamayuru, which is home to the highest located monastery in the region. Just after Lamayuru, we start the gradual climb towards the Fotu La(4108m) and after climbing down the pass we start the climb towards another high pass which is Namika La(3700m). Both of these passes are in the Zanskar range and take us into the Musbekh Valley. We pass through multiple picturesque villages en route to Kargil. Stay overnight. Wake up the chilly Himalayan air and get ready for what is going to be one of the most incredible riding experiences. We check out of our accommodation and start riding towards the Kashmir Valley via Dras, which is regarded as the second coldest inhabited place on earth. Just before reaching Dras, we take a short break at the Dras War Memorial. After Dras, we start riding uphill towards Zoji La(3528m) and the views from the top are just indescribably beautiful. After crossing the pass we enter the breathtaking valley of Sonamarg which is a major tourist destination. Another couple of hours of riding through the valley take us to Srinagar. Stay overnight in a houseboat/hotel. Day 12: Srinagar to Pathankot (332m) | 330km      Grade/Duration - Easy/Approx. 10 Hours Altitude Loss - 1253m Highlights - Riding down Himalayas, Jawahar Tunnel, Syama Tunnel  

Today’s ride is going to take us through the stunning valleys of Kashmir to the plains of Pathankot in Punjab. Although the distance is rather long, the riding pace should be quite swift as we will be climbing down and the road conditions are pretty decent. On the way to Pathankot, we are going to pass through two of the biggest tunnels in the region i.e. Jawahar Tunnel(2.85km) and Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel(9.2km). Arrive at the hotel and have a good night of sleep as tomorrow is also going to be a long day of riding. Day 13: Pathankot to Delhi (216m) | 485km      Grade/Duration - Easy/Approx. 11 Hours Altitude Loss - 116m Highlights - Lush Green landscape throughout   

Today marks the last day of this once in a lifetime adventure. We need to start as early as possible as the distance to be covered today is the longest on this 13-day expedition. The journey should be pretty uneventful as we are going to be riding on wide tarmac roads through the plains of Punjab and Haryana. Arrive in the capital by late evening and reach the very place where it all started from. Get photographed with the entire gang one last time on this epic voyage and bid farewell to your motorcycle and your fellow riders. Trip Ends.

We covered close to 2500 kms on our bike tour to Ladakh. The route we were given was great, because it covered most of the picturesque trails that we were hoping to ride through. We also camped along side Pangong Tso lake, which was definitely the best campsite. Remember to pack light because you will not need as much clothes as you will need biking gear and other necessary stuff. Also, get some experience of long bike rides before you do this because it will tire you a little sometimes. But we always stuck to the plan till the end!

Take the ride of your life but plan adequately before you decide to go. Better to book through an agency like Adventure Nation, because we were given a detailed itinerary and full mechanical support throughout. And you don't have to carry extra stuff like camping materials and all if you go with them. Also if you are going solo it is safer to go with these guys because you will definitely find some rider friends. Amazing trip. Ladakh is a beauty obviously, and the winds that touch you when you ride through it will give you a feeling out of this world.

Do remember that the roads get blocked for many hours and even days due to bad weather conditions. The ride through certain routes also becomes quite dangerous during certain times. You can consider the time from the middle of May until the middle of October to be a good window to start your journey.

Rushing your journey and traveling quickly to such a height will result in fatal issues for your health. Low atmospheric pressure and lack of oxygen will make you feel tired and create further health problems for you.

It is advised that you should rest for at least 2 days after you reach Leh. After resting, slowly start your journey as your body adjusts to the height and acclimatize. You should make sure that you drink enough water but don’t overdo it as it can also make your health suffer.

Some of the main symptoms that you may experience are headaches, nausea, and fatigue. If you feel the symptoms are getting worse, you must travel to a lower altitude and rest. There are 2 main routes that you can take to Leh. The most popular one is through Manali by taking the Manali-Leh highway. Another route which is through Srinagar to Sarchi and Upshi is less difficult and is preferred by many riders as well. Following are these two main routes in detail especially for the riders taking the Leh Ladakh bike trip from Delhi.

Route 1 with a total distance of around 2300 kilometers. 

•   Delhi – Jalandhar – Jammu – Srinagar – Kargil – Leh – Sarchu – Manali – back to Delhi

Route 2 with a total distance of around 2000 kilometers.

6. Permits & Documents

Your Leh Ladakh bike tour requires you to be prepared in terms of acquiring all the important permits and documents that you have to show at various checkpoints on your way. The District administration and the Green Tribunal are the 2 authorities that authorize all the required permits you need for your journey.

Many people think that the Rohtang Pass Permit is the only permit you need. But this permit is only for visiting Rohtang pass and it does not allow you to go beyond Rohtang La. if you are planning a Leh Ladakh bike trip, then you need to acquire Inner Line Permit (ILP). This travel document issued by the Government of India allows you to travel to the following areas.

7. Carry Cash

Your Leh Ladakh bike tour will mostly be on your bike riding through the barren vast rugged landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir. So, it is important to carry enough cash with you before starting your journey. You will not be able to find many ATMs on your way.

The small food shops and restaurants might not be able to accept your ATM cards or digital payments due to low connectivity. Paying them in cash is mostly the case. To avoid and inconvenience, make sure you have some cash ready to make the necessary payment for your fuel and food.

10. Connectivity

It is very important to inform your loved ones about your location and the status of your journey. Since your bike ride will be quite challenging and full of difficulties, your phone connection needs to work well.

However, only a few service providers work in Ladakh and that too some cellphone plans that charge you monthly. Most ‘Pre-Paid’ plans might not work or have low connectivity. So, be prepared and know when your network is working and update your loved ones on your current location.

11. Cost of your Trip

The overall cost of your bike trip depends on a lot of factors such as your choice of a bike, food, accommodation, and duration of your stay. You need to plan carefully about the budget you need to finish your journey successfully. Make sure to include the cost of any unforeseen difficulties that may arise. 

The average budget for 2 weeks long ride from Delhi on a bike might cost you around 35,000 – 40,000 India Rupees. This is just an average approximation of the amount you will spend on food, accommodation, and other basic requirements of a bike ride. 

Once you have selected your Leh Ladakh road trip bike, make sure to check the weather conditions, your health condition, equipment and gear, and all the other above-mentioned requirements while planning your journey.

First, we need to get our bike serviced properly from the authorized manufacturer store. Check if your bike's tires have half of their grip left, engine oil, brake oil, radiator oil, suspension gasket, any leaks, fuel tank FI condition, ABS functionality, and brake pads, and you can get your bike serviced properly in approximately 3,000 to 4,000 (excluding tires). Now you should figure out your budget. A lot depends on the vehicle you are selecting for your journey, and the Leh-Ladakh road trip cost would also vary depending on the accommodation and kind of food you choose to eat. Still, an average budget can be arrived at by considering basic factors such as accommodation, meals, and fuel. How to calculate cost or budget of Ladakh trip in 2023

Now and then I keep getting queries on the budget of Ladakh trip. So I believe a post around it will be helpful for many travelers looking forward to preparing the budget for their upcoming Leh Ladakh trip. To be very frank, the budget for any trip including Leh Ladakh depends a lot upon a person to person and the taste + comfort he/she prefers.

Ladakh is such a place where you can get varied stay options, unlike Spiti depending on your choice of comfort, preference, conditions, and circumstances. The variety may range from Rs 125-150 stay at some Dhabha tents to Rs 300 – 800 stay at low-cost hotels/homestays to Rs 1000 – 1500 at medium-cost hotels to Rs 3000 and above for hotels that offer much more comfort & luxury etc.

The same thing applies to food as well and depends on what you want to eat (Pizza or Dal Bhaat or Roti+Dal Fry or Maggie / Veg. Non-Veg. etc.). More importantly, where you want to eat and drink. But, in any case, I would try to sketch a basic average budget analysis for a Leh Ladakh trip based on the choice of accommodation and food by the majority of people.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

What is the budget of Ladakh Trip?

Given below is a basic itinerary for Leh Ladakh tour from Delhi (without any buffer days) covering all major tourist destinations of Leh Ladakh and followed widely by many travelers including me. We will be analyzing or finding the budget or cost for this Ladakh tour as a part of our exercise on what is the cost of Leh Ladakh trip.

You can roughly guess for yourself that for a similar Ladakh trip or based on your point of interest & preferences of stay, what will be the approximate cost or budget for your custom Leh Ladakh trip?

An example itinerary for Leh Ladakh covering almost all basic tourist places –

• Day 1 | Delhi – Jammu/Patnitop
• Day 2 | Jammu/Patnitop – Srinagar
• Day 3 | Srinagar – Kargil
• Day 4 | Kargil – Lamayuru – Leh
• Day 5 | Leh Local Sightseeing + Rest
• Day 6 | Leh – Khardung La – Diskit (Nubra Valley) – Hunder – Diskit
• Day 7 | Hunder/Diskit – Pangong Lake via Shyok route
• Day 8 | Pangong Tso – Hemis – Thicksey – Shey Palace – Leh
• Day 9 | Leh Rest Day or Sham Valley Tour around Leh including Magnetic Hills, Gurudwara Pather Sahib, Alchi , Likir, Basgo, Confluence at Nimmu
• Day 10 | Leh – Tso Moriri via Chumathang
• Day 11 | Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Moore Plains (Manali – Leh Highway) – Pang – Sarchu
• Day 12 | Sarchu – Manali
• Day 13 | Manali – Delhi

So, you can see that for our sample Ladakh itinerary, we have taken 13 days (with one rest day in Leh). You can add/remove and modify the days according to your needs. Of course, the budget outcome will depend a bit on that, but I guess that is very much trivial to say.

Also, consider that while traveling alone , the cost of accommodation and transportation is bound to increase. However, while traveling in evenly balanced groups of 3-5 people, the cost of the Ladakh trip will surely decrease. As of now, I will also assume that you guys are two in number so that the budget can be calculated on a twin-sharing basis. 

Now, to analyze the budget for the above or any other itinerary, we can categorize the budget into two major parts described below –

Food + Accommodation + Miscellaneous Budget of Ladakh Trip

Let us break down each of these components to understand the break of Ladakh trip cost in detail.

Accommodation Cost

This example trip will need about 12-13 days at the very least, so roughly you will be spending some Rs 12000 – 18000 per person for food, accommodation and other misc. expenditures.

If you are living in an average budget hotel with decent comfort and are traveling in a group (at least 2 in number) then the average cost per day for food, accommodation, and other misc. things like tolls, permit fees, entry fees to monasteries, etc. come to about Rs 1000-1500 per day.

Again, Rs 1000-1500 figure could be a low budget for someone and a little high for others depending upon the choice of stay and food or other activities you plan to do on your Ladakh trip.

For example, if you dine at a dhaba tent, then the cost of the meal would come out to be around Rs 50-70 only per person, and the same meal if you take at a restaurant at Changspa road in Leh then you might pay Rs 150 – Rs 170 per person or maybe more. Furthermore, in some high-end restaurants, the cost of food will go up much more.

Vegetarian or Non-Vegetarian also matters with respect to food pricing, so take that factor into account as well.

You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂

Miscellaneous Cost

The same thing applies to different activities. Here I have considered what is unavoidable such as toll, permit charges, entry fees, snacks, etc. If you are going paragliding, rafting, shopping, etc.. then that will surely be something additional for you.

Hence, if you are going with a budget hotel or guest house having decent comfort, eating decent quality food, and including only mandatory miscellaneous charges then you may need to shell out Rs 12000 – 18000 per person for your Leh Ladakh itinerary of 12-13 days.

Mode of Transportation Budget of Ladakh Trip

On a trip to Leh Ladakh, the major cost comes out to be for taxis or transportation or fuel depending upon your mode of transport. Using public transport inside Leh – Ladakh is a challenge as the frequency of such vehicles is feeble and based on their schedules you may require 18-20 days to complete the above trip.

So, in Leh Ladakh, travelers mostly commute either by privately hired taxis or shared taxis run by tour operators or by finding travel partners and sharing the cost with them or riding rented bikes or ultimately self-drive on their bikes or cars. All these options will present you with different costs for the trip.

Let’s look at each one of them below to get an idea of the total cost for a Leh Ladakh trip.

Cost of Ladakh trip on Self-Drive Private Vehicle

You will be traveling about 3300-3600 KMs for the above Ladakh trip. So, if your bike gives a mileage of about 25 KMPL on average in mountains + plains, then you are looking for about Rs 13200 – 14400 for fuel roughly. If it gives less, then adjust accordingly. I have assumed average cost of petrol as Rs 100 per litre as of January 2023. In plains, it will be less and in mountains it will be more.

Similarly, you can calculate if you are driving the car. Just keep in mind that in hills, your car or bike will give much lesser mileage than in plains. So, calculate accordingly and divide them among the people traveling in the car to calculate the per-person cost. It is difficult/uncomfortable to travel to Ladakh with a pillion on a bike , so the cost is calculated singularly above.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling to Ladakh by self-drive mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 12000 – 18000) + (Rs 13200 – 14400) = ( Rs 25200 – 32400 )) as the total cost for the entire Leh Ladakh trip.

Self-Drive But Rented Vehicle

Here, the cost of fuel would be the same as for a self-drive private vehicle calculated above, but you will be adding the cost of bike/car rental as well. Usually, you get a decent bike in good condition at around Rs 1400 – 1500 per day depending on the make and model of the bike you rent.

So, the cost of bike rent only from Delhi to Delhi Ladakh trip comes out to be around Rs 20,000 – 24,000 considering if you get a discount. Adding the fuel cost as calculated above, the cost here becomes approximately Rs 33,200 – 38,400.

This is a solo Ladakh ride cost. So, if you have a pillion then divide by two here.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling to Ladakh by self-drive rented bike mode of transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 33,200 – 38,400) + (Rs 12000 – 18000) = ( Rs 45,200 – 56,400 )) as the total cost for the entire trip.

Privately Hired Taxi in Leh

The taxis outside the Leh are not allowed to roam in Leh – Ladakh, and you are always required to hire a taxi that belongs to Leh only. So, I am considering the case when you will be hiring a private taxi in Leh only and to reach Leh you will be using public transport.

It may be the case that you are coming in a privately hired taxi from outside Leh. Or you may be flying directly to Leh etc. but here I will assume that you have used public transport such as the train to reach Jammu, JKSRTC buses to reach Srinagar, and then to Leh, HPTDC buses to reach Manali from Leh and further to Delhi.

Also, I will assume that on Day 11 you will be going to Leh from Tso Moriri since in public transport you cannot travel directly from Tso Moriri to Manali . Traveling in this way means one extra day being spent in Leh Ladakh, making it a 13-day trip. I am again assuming you are 4 in number.

I will break down the private taxi cost and the other transport cost for the entire trip as below –

• Day 1 – Day 4 (Delhi – Jammu – Srinagar – Kargil – Leh) = Rs 3000 per person
• Day 5 (Leh Local) = Rs 2400 / 4 = Rs 600 per person
• Day 6 – Day 8 (Leh – Khardung La – Nubra – Pangong – Leh) = Rs 22000 / 4 = Rs 5500 per person
• Day 9 – Day 10 ( Leh – Tso Moriri – Tso Kar – Leh ) = Rs 14000 / 4 = Rs 3500 per person
• Day 11 – Day 13 (Leh – Keylong – Manali – Delhi) = Rs 4000 per person

Considering a 10-12% discount on the rates of Leh Taxi Union after bargaining, the total cost comes out approximately to Rs 16,000 – 17,000 per person when traveling two in number.

This cost of a taxi in Ladakh per person will come down if there are more people traveling with you to a maximum of 6.

Why only 6? Because one Scorpio taxi can accommodate 6 persons with ease :), anything more than that you need to hire two taxis.

However, I recommend that 5 people in one taxi are the optimum number to share the cost of a taxi.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling by privately hired taxi in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 16000 – 17000) + (Rs 13000 – 19500) = ( Rs 29000 – 36500 )) as the total cost for the entire trip including 1 day added to travel between Tso Moriri – Leh.

If by any chance you plan to hire a private taxi to travel on Srinagar – Leh Highway and Manali – Leh Highway then the cost will go much higher because charges for Srinagar – Leh, and Manali – Leh in a private taxi are about Rs 20000 and Rs 25000 respectively as per rates in 2023.

If you are less in number, like 2 in this example, it is always suggested to travel by public transport such as shared taxis, JKSRTC buses, HPTDC buses on Srinagar – Leh, and Manali – Leh Highways in Himachal .

Shared Taxis or Public Transport or Travel Partners (in a group)

Assuming that instead of hiring a private taxi in Leh Ladakh you plan to travel by shared taxis run by tour operators or join with other travel partners to share the cost or you are about 5 in number then you are looking at about Rs 13000 – 14000 approximately.

If you further plan to travel in Ladakh by public buses then this figure as well will go down further considerably. However, at the same time, you may be required to stay for a longer period adjusting to the schedule of these public buses which means an increase in lodging + food costs.

Finally, taking food + accommodation into account, traveling shared taxis (or public transport or along with travel partners) in Leh and reaching Leh in public/shared transport, you are looking at about ((Rs 13000 – 14000) + (Rs 12000 – 18000) = ( Rs 25000 – 32000 )) as the total cost for the entire trip.

If I look at the above scenarios or examples, then, of course, it may not be the case every time. Sometimes you will be hiring the bike from Delhi only and sometimes partially. There can be cases where you will travel to Leh Ladakh by bus or public transport and then hire a bike in Leh to ride to only a few places.

I have planned to do this itinerary starting from Srinagar-Zansar-Leh-Nubra-Ladakh-Spiti. Made few tweaks on your suggested plan.

Having spoken to few taxi drivers for SUV fare, lowest quote I got for Srinagar-Zansar-Leh-Nubra-Ladakh and drop in Batal/Losar for 23 days – 115000. Avg of 5000/day. And for Spiti region, I’m getting quote of 3500/day. For 10days it will be 35000.

Overall i find it bit expensive. So wanted to know if this is a normal fare. Or want to negotiate in person once I reach Srinagar.

Day 1 | Srinagar Day Tour.

Day 2 | Srinagar Day Tour. ~Dal Lake, Shikara ride, floating market, Shalimar garden.

Day 3 | Srinagar – Sonamarg – Zoji La – Dras – Kargil (200km – 5h30m). ~Start early from Srinagar. ~Have a late lunch at Dras. Visit Kargil War Memorial. Overnight at Kargil.

If you are directly reaching at Leh by flight, then sleep in Leh fo at least two days before going out to Nubra Valley. Once there your plan looks OK except instead of Pang, stay at Sarchu and do Sarchu – Shingo La near Darcha – Jispa to cover a new pass and then come back by Jispa to Pang or Sarchu and then to Leh.

Also, you have so many days but missing Hanle in between. I believe you should spare a day for Hanle in between Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri

we have only booked the stay at leh for day 1, do u think we need to book anything prior ? also is the itinerary okay ? our budget is around 35 k per person and we are total 4 people

You should move Day 5 as Day 2 and rest looks OK with me. No need to book the hotels unless you are very particular about a place to stay. 35K is very reasonable and doable budget for this kind of Ladakh trip. It should be below it.

We are a group of 4 friends planning to finally go to Leh on 13th July and will return by 18th July. The travel is by air, since some of them had holiday issues.

We have done the hotel booking in Leh and are looking for accommodation in Nubra. 

I have been in contact with many travel agents. I am getting a rate of 37K for a private car for the entire trip for site seeing, plus they are ready to give us 2 rooms with breakfast at Diskit.

Is the rate given by travel agent fine or we can get better rates locally? What is your opinion?

You should take the direct taxi instead of travel agent and book some hotels on your own.

Firstly, I will suggest you that please plan it in other direction as going via Srinagar – Leh Highway will be much much easier on your body and help you acclimatize to the high altitude of Manali – Leh Highway. Also, it allows you to enjoy the beauty of Manali – Leh by splitting the journey almost evenly in two days which is very difficult in the other direction. At times, while going from Srinagar to Leh, you might need to work out few things if there have been some tensions in taxi unions of Kargil and Leh. In order to settle it out, what they do is that they make a transit point just before Fotu La while going to Leh from Kargil. All Leh taxis stop there and kargil taxis too. They exchange passengers and move back in respective directions. Leh taxis take passengers to Leh coming from Srinagar/Kargil and Kargil guys take passengers to Srinagar/kargil coming from Leh. But, that happens only when there is an issue.

I am planning for Manali – Leh , one way by bike and return flight. I would be travelling with my wife as a pillion rider. I am confused if i should go with a package tour or should i choose to go on our own. I am mainly concerned about the luggage to be carried on bike. Also, are there any chances of finding companions from manali if we dont book any package now. Please advise us.

Your blog is really helpful! But, need your help on my itinerary and know the budget for the same. It’s a 9-day long trip which I am planning for Sep (including the day I reach Leh and the day I leave for my hometown). The itinerary is as follows:

Day 1:In Leh. Planning for the next day.

Day 2:Bike to Magneti Hills. Indus and Zanskar. Sunset at Shanti Stupa.

Day 3:Drive in a taxi to Nubra valley through Khardung La. Evening at Hunder Dunes.

Day 4: Diskit Monastery in morning. Pangong.

Day 5:Back to Leh. Thicksey Monastery

Day 6:Hemis, Stakna and Matho. Leh Palace and local Leh markets.

Day 7:Tsomoriri Lake. Chumathang Plateau and hot springs.

Day 8:Back to Leh. Relax with friends.

You will be spending around 25-40K for the taxi for above tour. and for a stay in average hotel + food, you can count for about Rs 1200 per day per person. Rest it will be your air tickets and extra you would like to spend on shopping.

You have covered most places. I will suggest that you cover Turtuk in Nubra Valley and club the monastery tour while coming back from Pangong Tso lake or going to tso Moriri. All those monasteries fall on the route.

Me and my wife Swathi are avid followers are DOW and have been a great fans from past 3-4 years. Our family trip upto Keylong in 2015 and my bike trip to Ladakh circuit last year were successful greatly because of the info we got from DOW. We are planning family trip as per below schedule in 2018. In spite of so many posts on this topic, we still have questions and looking at you to guide us

We would be 4-7 members and want to hire a taxi from Srinagar for the full trip. Is it possible to get a taxi from Srinagar and get a drop in Manali/Chandigarh? Great website and has critical information for travelers. I will be going to Ladakh for a month from Mid August to Mid September. I was wondering what a cheap meal would cost in Leh, as I need to budget. If anyone can provide me some numbers would be really grateful.

Sunil, a cheap meal could be as low as Rs 20-30 like Thupka (noodles and veggies) on a dhabha.

Hello Dheeraj, Thank you for sharing this budget Itinerary… My wife and I are planning a trip to Ladakh this September 2017 and have followed this itinerary suggested by you with the only difference that we plan to fly in and out of Ladakh due to time constraints.. However, when we shared our plan with few of the drivers recommended by you, they have given us a price quotation much higher than what we expected according to this itinerary… As we are budget travelers, we were looking at a 8 day trip to Ladakh(5 days tour, 2 days complete rest) in mid range vehicle like Scorpio… Please find our itinerary below and can you kindly help us figure out what should be the total cost of our package (on traveling) according to you as we wish to negotiate further with them?

Do two day trip to Nubra Valley and Pangong tso each. You are a couple and private taxis are very costly in Leh but you will be able to find the shared taxi without much fuss at all. There are lots of flyers which people put at cafes, dine-ins, restaurants, travel agent desks/shops/whiteboards wanting to share the taxis for different trips within Ladakh. Even travel agent organize such shared taxis trip as well but charge a little higher about Rs 200-300 more than it would ideally cost. So, in the worst case, you can always go back to them and book a seat for yourself. Gelling up with people in Ladakh is more or less easy because many people travel solo

I’m planning a trip across India with my friend who’s a US citizen starting first week of October which looks something like this. I need your inputs because you have so much experience.

Delhi-Leh-Sringar-Guwahati-Shillong-Cherrapunji-Guwahati-Bangalore-Puducherry-Kanyakumari-Kerela-Karnataka-Goa-Mumbai-Udaipur-Jaisalmer-Amritsar-Delhi

All this has to be done in 28 days. Plus it’s a budget trip Rs 75K for the complete trip.

Now, I’m planning to be in Leh for 6 days maximum. For this, I was thinking of flying to Leh (Rs 3000 per person), renting a bike there and spending 4 days in Leh (Nubra Valley and Pangong and acclimatization, Rs 8-10k for 2 people) and then taking a bus ride to Srinagar (2 days – Rs 1500) and flying to Guwahati from Srinagar. Will there be buses plying in the first week of October and also, do we get to see everything in a bus ride?

I was thinking of flying to Srinagar first and renting a bike from Srinagar to Srinagar but that would throw off the budget completely and also I don’t think I can fit that in 6-7 days. What do you think about it? Do you have any suggestions or comments? And what about the permits since their is a foreign national with me?

Also I’m flying from Srinagar because there is a huge difference between flights to Guwahati from Leh and Srinagar.

1. You need at least two days of acclimatization in Leh after flying, then two day each for Nubra and Pangong Tso and then two day to reach Srinagar. This makes it 8 days. The buses will keep plying on Leh to Srinagar route in first week of October. Don’t go to Srinagar and to Leh, best is to go to Leh and then drive to Srinagar for renting bikes.
