You will see this island is spelled both Lesbos Island and Lesvos Island . And we will write it both ways through this post. So why has this remarkable destination acquired two names? It is to the Island’s name and is spelled with the Greek letter B, aka Beta.

In Greek, Beta is pronounced as we English speakers say, V. So it sounds like ‘Les-Vos.’ Ancient Greeks may have pronounced Beta like an English B, but modern Greeks tend to pronounce it as a V. Most English speakers pronounce it Lesbos – but both are correct.

Dating back to the eleventh century, the Castle of Molyvos was actually built over a former and much older fortress that probably dated back to the Archaic era. Its primary function was to contrast attacks coming from the Turkish city of Smyrna not many years before the final invasion and conquest of the island by the Ottoman Empire.

After defending the region from several attacks, the fortress finally fell in 1458, giving way to a long siege over the city.

To access the castle, it is necessary to pass through three different protection gates, the last made from metal-plated wood.

Castle Of Mytelene

Another unmissable fortress on the island, the Castle of Mytilene, is one of the largest strongholds in the Mediterranean . The fort stands on the ruins of an ancient Greek acropolis.

The castle was first built back in the sixth century under the orders of Emperor Justinian. However, in the fourteenth century, the Genoans ruled the island, and the castle became the home and seat of the governor.

Petrified forest of lesbos.

Hundreds of fossilized tree trunks were once part of a lush forest that is about 20 million years old near the island’s western coast.

Although there are a few petrified trees scattered in different spots under the water off the coast of Lesbos, the majority of the forest is located inside a National Forest Park standing near the village of Sigri.

Archaeologists and other researchers believe that the phenomenon of petrifaction occurred due to the lava and ashes coming from eruptions in the Neogene Period. This forest, larger than the famous petrified forest in Arizona, is the only one of this kind in Europe.

Natural History Museum Of The Lesbos Petrified Forest

Roman aqueduct.

Known as the Roman Aqueduct of Moria, the ruins of this once impressive engineering marvel are located in the heart of a valley outside the town of Mytilene.

The construction dates back to the third century AD, and the largest remaining part of the structure is about 160 meters long, with two and up to three levels of arches made of local grey marble.

The aqueduct was used to channel water from the springs on the Mountain Olympos to the ancient city of Mytilene, covering a distance of 26 kilometers.

Plomari Ouzo Distillery

If there is one thing that Lesbos is known for, it’s Ouzo. In fact, on the island, you can find the most famous ouzo brand in the world in Plomari. The factory was founded in 1894 by Isidoros Arvanitis, a native of the village of Plomari. 

This distillery has been producing Greece’s most beloved spirit ever since, following a secret formula that has pretty much remained the same throughout the years.

The factory is open to the public. Visitors and tours are available for those interested in learning the production process and those who want to know about ouzo and taste different varieties of this popular drink!

Ouzo Museum Barbayannis

As we have already mentioned, the island’s staple product is the popular spirit you will easily spot in every Greek tavern, Ouzo.

You can learn more about this solid anise-flavored spirit by visiting the Barbayannis Distillery and the village of Plomari. The company dates back to 1860, and it was founded by a Russian immigrant who took advantage of the area’s water and herbs to develop his recipe.

Next to the modern premises of the distillery, it is possible to visit the Ouzo Museum to learn about ouzo production and the history of the family.

The most beautiful village of Lesvos is located in the northern part of the island, at a distance of 60 km from the capital, Mytilini.

Molyvos impresses the visitor by maintaining its imposing Genoese castle, which "crowns" the settlement and is considered one of the best-preserved castles in the eastern Mediterranean.

The village, with its traditional stone-built cobblestone streets, beautiful stone mansions with wooden balconies, as well as the dreamy view of the sunset, is a favorite destination on the island for those who want to discover places that really remain engraved in their memory forever.

A walk through the flowery alleys offers incredible picturesque images, while the fragrances that emerge from the village's ouzos are among its main features that delight the visitor.

What is worth mentioning about Molyvos is the fact that to preserve the architectural specificity of the settlement and its traditional color and aroma – since 1965, it has been declared a protected settlement – ​​building is not allowed unless the materials used are stone and wood.

Antissa is the second most important village in the region and the birthplace of the ancient poet and musician Terpandros.

Its square with the centuries-old plane trees, which create a beautiful landscape with the shade they give to the coffee tables, will attract your attention.

Car ferries from Ayvalık on the Turkish mainland take 90 min. Turyol is the ferry line: in 2022 a one way adult ticket was €20, return €30. Ferries no longer sail from Dikili.

Local buses run on the island to the bigger villages on the island. You can buy tickets in the bus. The major bus stop and information station is in Mitilini.

Taxis are cheap and the taxi drivers are obliged to use the meter. Taxis based in Mitilini are yellow. Taxis not based in Mitilini are grey-coloured. Taxis can be used for local transportation, transfers and excursions, but also for emergencies.

A good way to see the island is to rent a car or a scooter.

A local, good quality and affordable car rental place, Auto Moto, can be found at the airport, and many more car rental places at and around Kountouriotou Street at Mitilini's harbourfront. Recommended if you are a confident driver!

The locals drive pretty fast, but usually obey the traffic rules. The roads are generally quite good, and even the mountain roads not too challenging.

Molyvos Castle

The Castle of Molyvos stands on top of a hill with pine trees and offers a gorgeous view of the area. This is a strong castle with many signs, coat of arms and other distinctive elements.

Monastery of Limonas

This monastery was founded in 1523 and was used as a spiritual center during the Ottoman occupation. The large halls of the monastery have been turned into an interesting museum, housing various treasures and marvels. The monastery also houses a rich library with more than 15,000 documents and 450 manuscripts that date from the 9th and 19th century. Women are not allowed to enter the monastery.

Roman Aqueduct

This Roman Aqueduct dates from the 3rd century AD and constitutes one of the first big technical accomplishments of the late Roman architecture. It opened as an archaeological site in 1995.

The Capital of Lesvos

The Town of Mytilene is the beautiful capital and harbour of the island located on the east side of the island. Considered as one of the most ancient cities of the country, Mytilene is built amphitheatrically between seven verdant hills. The entire area consists from old neighbourhoods and picturesque suburbs with exquisite archaeological and religious monuments. Mytilene is the artistic, commercial and industrial center of Lesvos with interesting museums, historical buildings, Ottoman monuments and archaeological sights. However, the jewel of the city is the Castle of Mytilene standing on the highest spot of the area. Every summer, the Festival of Lesvos is held in the city while the Ouzo Festival takes place in August.

The Ancient Town of Mythimna

The Ancient Town of Mythimna was one of the most powerful ancient cities of the island that occupies a peninsula of the northern coast of Lesvos. Archaeological excavations have brought to light remnants of an ancient settlement, almost identical to the modern traditional settlement. Today, Molyvos is considered as one of the most important preserved settlements of the Aegean.

The Church of Panagia Glikofilousa

The Church of Panagia Glikofilousa is one of the most important places of worship of the island standing on a high rock in the centre of the village of Petra. The church boasts a valuable wood carved iconostasis, a wooden carved episcopal throne and a rare collection of byzantine icons. The fortified architecture of the church indicated that it was built in a period of frequent pirate invasions during the byzantine times. Although you will have to ascent 114 steps to access the church, the views of the surrounding areas are stunning.

The Fortress of Mytilene

The Fortress of Mytilene is one of the biggest castles of the Mediterranean occupying the northwest part of the peninsula of Mytilene. The castle was built in the 6 th century and it was renovated the Genovese Frangisk Gateluzi in 1355 while it experienced transformations from the Ottomans in 1462. The castle comprises from the upper part that occupies the higher part of the peninsula, the middle part with remnants of Turkish buildings and the lower part that is entirely a Turkish addition. On November of 1912, the fleet of Greece liberated Mytilene and the flag was raised in the castle.

The Monastery of Limonos

The Monastery of Limonos is the largest and most important monastery of the island located close to the village of Kalloni. The monastery was established in the byzantine period and worked until the Ottoman occupation. However, it was re established from Saint Ignatius along with the Limoniada School and became the intellectual center of Lesvos until 1923. Today, the monastery boasts an important library with rare manuscripts and ecclesiastical items. The traditional celebration in honour of the saint is held on the October 8. This is one of the most important religious festivals of the island.

The Ouzo Museum of Barbayiannis

The Ouzo Museum of Barbayiannis is located in the village of Plomari. The museum works as a distillery and presents the production process of ouzo, a traditional alcoholic beverage of Lesvos. The museum emphasizes the tradition related to one of the first rate quality products of the country.

The Petrified Forest of Sigri

The Petrified Forest of Sigri is one of the most beautiful monuments of the geological heritage of the world. It is a member of the Worldwide Network of Geoparks of Unesco. The forest extends over the northwest side of Lesvos in a region covered with volcanic stones. The Petrified Forest was created from the intense volcanic activity occurred throughout the greater Aegean twenty million years ago. The mission of the museum of the petrified forest is to promote, preserve and protect the fossils of the forest. The extensive collection of findings showcase the rich ecosystem of the Aegean. The Petrified Forest of Sigri has been declared as a Preserved Natural Monument from the State of Greece while it was integrated into the Global Network of Geoparks from Unesco.

The Roman Aqueduct

The Roman Aqueduct boasts the remnants of arches with a length of a hundred seventy meters located in the area of Moria. It is estimated that the aqueduct was built during the 2 nd century with the intention of carrying water from the abundant resources of Mount Olympus to the ancient city of Mytilene. The roman aqueduct of Lesvos is considered as one of the most important engineering projects in the Mediterranean.

The Village of Agiassos

The Village of Agiassos is a picturesque village located on the west side of the island. The settlement is the main center of handicraft tradition of Lesvos and it is one of the most beautiful villages of the island nestling on the verdant mountainous slopes of Olympus with panoramic views of the endless blue. The village has been declared as a traditional settlement, as it has managed to retain its traditional and customs along with the traditional character of the area. Agiassos is famous for the Church of Panagia Vrefokratousa where the biggest religious festival of Lesvos is held on August 15. The biggest part of the area is offered for hiking adventures owing to the enchanting landscape of olive and pine trees. An exciting trail with one of the most beautiful routes of the island begins here passing through the beautiful chestnut forest of Agiassos.

The Village of Eressos

The Village of Eressos is one of the most beautiful villages of the island located on the west side of the island. The village has managed to retain its authentic character embellished with traditional houses and narrow alleys. However, the most intriguing part is the haven of Eressos, known as Skala Eressos. It has one of the best beaches of country stretching over a length of two kilometres. The birthplace of poetess Sappho is an ideal place for those looking for tranquillity and relaxation. The Village of Molyvos

The Village of Molyvos is one of the most beautiful medieval settlements of Greece located on the north side of the island. Declared as a preserved village from the State of Greece, the settlement distinguishes for its with mansions and stone roof houses between the labyrinthine cobblestone alleys crowned from the Castle of Mythimna. The charming harbour of the area offers breathtaking sceneries with panoramic views to the Aegean. Molyvos hosts an important archaeological collection as well as a municipal art gallery. Every summer, numerous cultural events are held inside the castle. A few kilometres away lies the settlement of Eftalou boasting the famous thermal springs with its therapautic properties. The Village of Plomari

The Village of Plomari is the ouzo capital of Lesvos located on the south side of the island.  The village is built amphitheatrically among verdant hills around the natural bay with magnificent views to the Aegean. Plomari has a traditional character with stone houses and colorful courtyards, cobblestone alleys and beautiful churches. The settlement has rich cultural and musical traditional organizing festivities all year round. The shipyard of Plomari is considered as one of the best ancient shipyards of the Aegean. One of the main attractions of Plomari is the Barbayiannis Ouzo Museum that presents the production process of ouzo, the traditional alcoholic beverage of Lesvos. The museum emphasizes the tradition related to one of the first rate quality products of the country. Also, the beach of Agios Isidoros lies off the town. The beach is considered as one of the cleanest and biggest beaches of the island. The most notable cultural event is the Ouzo Festival held every August.

The Village of Sigri

The Village of Sigri is a fishing village located on the west side of the island. Known for the Petrified Forest that was created from the intense volcanic activity of the Aegean twenty million years ago, Sigri is one of the main attractions of Lesvos. Travellers can follow the special sign-posted footpaths on the entire hillside to discover the mysteries of the Petrified Forest. Sigri is the largest natural harbour of the island sheltered from the islet of Nisiopi. The islet can be explored through short boat tours with main attractions of the big lighthouse, the chapel of Agios Georgios as well as the famous trunks of the petrified tees lying in the sea. At last, it should be mentioned that Sigri is known for its exquisite fish taverns.

The Wetland of Kalloni

The Wetland of Kalloni is one of the most important ecosystems of Lesvos located on the southern side of the island. The areas around the bay of Kalloni serve as a shelter and reproductive place for endangered, rare and protected bird species. These wetlands include the lagoon of Messa, the marsh of Skala Kallonis, the saltpans of Kalloni and Polihnitos and the torrents of Ennia Kamares, Mylopotamos, Tsiknia and Vouvaris. The wetland has been declared as a special area of nature preservation from the European Network of Natura 2000. The wetland of Kalloni is an ideal destination for bird watchers.

Archaeological Sites

The Ancient Town of Antissa was one of the ancient cities of the island located on the western point of Lesvos. Ancient Antissa was the birthplace of Terpandros, the founder of ancient Greek music. Archaeological excavations have unearthed the remnants of the ancient settlement along with the relics of the castle of Ovriokastro. The ancient city occupied the area that is today the medieval castle of the northern half of the peninsula. Within the city, excavations have identified the remains of houses and the relics of the medieval walls.

The Ancient Town of Eressos was one of the ancient cities of the island founded following the colonization of the Aeolians during the Hellenistic period. The citadel is built on a hill on the southwest side of the beach of Eressos. Today, architectural fragments of the ancient town and remnants of the walls of the medieval castle are the sole surviving remains.

The Ancient Town of Mesa was one of the ancient cities and the centre of worship dedicated to the Lesbian trinity of Zeus, Hera and Dionysus. Archaeological excavations have discovered the remnants of temples of the classical era, which are considered as one of the most interesting examples of architecture of this period. Today, foundations and architectural fragments of the temple along with the foundations of a byzantine church are the sole surviving remains. The archaeological site is located on the area of Koukala in Agia Paraskevi.

The Ancient Town of Pyrra was one of the ancient cities of the island located on the seabed close to the mouth of river Vouvari. A large earthquake destroyed the city and the tidal waves sunk parts of the settlement. On the hill of Pyrra, one can see numerous foundations of buildings and ancient fortifications. Close to the sea, there are still remaining parts of the ancient port visible when the seawaters are calm.

The Ancient Town of Thermi was one of the ancient cities of the island located on the eastern coast of the island. Thermi is considered to be the first city of the Mediterranean. Archaeological excavations have brought to light the remnants of the architectural design of the settlement including fortifications and roads. Thermi is one of the best researched settlements of the northeast Aegean. The position of Thermi was the most important harbour of the period, although evidence were not revealed due to the erosion of the land.

The Ancient Theatre of Mytilene was built in the Hellenistic period on the verdant hill of Agia Kyriaki. Today, the latest form of the theatre is visible as it was repaired from the Romans. The Ancient Theatre of Mytilene was regarded as one of the largest theatres in antiquity. According to tradition, the Roman Emperor Pompey decided to build a similar theatre in Rome during his visit to Lesvos.

The Roman Aqueduct boasts the remnants of arches with a length of a hundred seventy meters located in the area of Morias. The Temple of Klopedi is a characteristic example of archaic architecture lying on the top of a plateau close to the town of Agia Paraskevi. Archaeological excavations have brought to light the structural remnants of two ancient temples, now displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene. Klopedi was one of the most important sanctuaries of the island, which is believed to be dedicated to Apollo Napeos.

Castles and Fortresses

The Castle of Sigri was built from the Ottomans in 1757 with the intention of protecting the harbour of Sigri from pirate invasions, as it was one of the most important harbours of trade transportation in the times. The main walls of the castle stand on the edge of the bay of Sigri. Although there aren’t fortifications inside the site, the castle offers panoramic views of the Aegean.

The Fortress of Mythimna is one of the best preserved castles of the Eastern Mediterranean dominating the top of the hill of Molyvos. The castle was built in the 13 th century and it was renovated from the Genovese Frangisk Gualeluzo in 1373 while it experienced transformations from the Ottomans in 1462. It is a well constructed fortress with strong walls and distinctive elements divided in many levels. During the summer, a series of cultural events are held within the castle.

Churches and Monasteries

The Church of Agios Athanasios is an imposing church located in the centre of the city of Mytilene. It is the cathedral of the city distinguished for its remarkable structures and its huge bell tower with gothic elements. The church boasts a beautiful wood carving of the byzantine period and a stunning fretwork icon screen. The martyrdom of Saint Athanasios is celebrated on February 17.

The Church of Agios Therapon is a majestic church located in the city of Mytilene. The church was built from the local architect Argyris Adalis, a student of Ernst Ziller, in the 18 th century. The church boasts an imposing architecture along with a beautiful carved wooden temple. The church combines architectural elements of baroque, rococo, neoclassicism and gothic. It is a must visit.

The Church of Panagia Gorgona (Virgin the Mermaid) is located in the charming harbour of Skala Sikamnias. The church stands on a small rock by the sea, named after an icon depicting the Virgin with a fishtail. Panagia Gorgona is the patroness of fishermen.

The Church of Panagia Vrefokratousa is the religious centre of the island located in the town of Agiassos. The church boasts an impressive collection of old icons along with the icon of Virgin Mary holding Jesus, which was brought to Agiassos from Jerusalem in 803 AC. The church celebrates in honour of Virgin Mary on August 15.

The Monastery of Ipsilou , else known as the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos, is one of the oldest monasteries of the island located close to the village of Andissa. The fortified monastery was built on the crater of a dormant volcano in 1101. Inside the monastery, there is a collection of byzantine icons, gold plated gospels, crosses with pearls and an interesting library with a valuable collection of manuscripts.

The Monastery of Taxiarhis is one of the most important pilgrimage centres of the island located in the village of Mandamados. According to tradition, the monastery was invaded from the Saracen pirates, who slaughtered the monks, with the exception of a new probationary monk who managed to hide in the ceiling of the church. From there, he saw the form of the Archangel hovering over the corpses of the monks. Then, he took clay, wax and the blood of the monks and created the icon of Taxiarhis. From this incident onwards, Taxiarhis is the patron saint of the island. Up until today, the inspiring picture with the large eyes of Archangel awes inspiring. The monastery celebrates on Sunday of Myrrhbearer, two weeks after the Resurrection, with a one of the greatest religious festivals of Lesvos.

The Monastery of Perivoli spreads on a beautiful verdant valley close to the village of Andissa. The monastery has an interesting collection of wall paintings from the sixteenth century. There is a beautiful courtyard with olive groves outside the walls of the monastery, an ideal setting for picnics.

Ottoman Monuments

The Çarsi Hamam is part of the complex of Yeni Mosque located at the center of the Ottoman neighbourhood Asize. The building follows the conventional design of bath houses. Çarsi is the most impressive hamam of the island, which acts as a cultural center during the summer.

The Valide Mosque is the jewel of the harbour of Mytilene. It is one of the oldest mosques of the island built in 1615. In its interior, the roof has a colourful decoration, which was covered with brown colour after the occupation of the Ottomans.

The Yeni Mosque is the biggest mosque of the island located in the city of Mytilene, on Ermou Street in the old Turkish market. The mosque was build from Moustafa Aga Koulaksiz in 1825. The mosque distinguishes for its beautiful stone construction covered with buzantine and ottoman stylistic elements.

The City Hall of Mytilene and the Building of the North Aegean Region are located in the city of Mytilene.  The buildings are examples of the neoclassical architecture.

The First Gymnasium of Mytilene is an imposing building of neoclassical architecture. It is a three storey building and its façade is covered with white marble. The building was built from Argyris Adalis, a student of Ziller, in 1888 financed from the benefactors of Lesvos namely Mitrelias and Vournazos.

The Mansion of Vareltzidena is one of the few surviving examples of the traditional mansions of Lesvos. The mansion was built in the late 18 th century. Its architectural form is influenced from the fortified tower structures and the lightweight upper structure while its interior includes paintings with various scenes and richly decorated wooden ceilings. The mansion functions as a monument.

The School of Agia Paraskevi is an imposing building of neoclassical architecture. The construction of the building was financed with revenues of the oil press of the town. The school of Agia Paraskevi is one of the most attractive monuments of the island.

The Archaeological Museum of Mytilene is housed in a neoclassical building of Vournazos family. The museum exhibits the rich history of the island through a collection of archaeological findings found in the ancient settlements of Lesvos. These findings include tombstones, fragments of ancient temples, marble statues, coins and jewelry. The collection is also exhibited in another building in the area of Kioski Mytilene.

The Byzantine Museum of Lesvos exhibits a rich collection of byzantine icons, pieces of screens, manuscripts, ecclesiastical books and verstments of priests. The museum is located in the city of Mytilene.

The Folklore Museum of Mytilene is housed in the building of the Old Port Authority. The museum exhibits folklore artefacts of the history of the island including unique artefacts like embroideries, traditional customes, silverware and figures of shadow theatre.

The Iakovidis Digital Museum is the first digital art museum of the country located in the village of Hidira. The museum displays the work of one of the most important painters of contemporary art of the 19 th century.

The Olive Museum of Archipelago is one of the first steam powered factories of the Aegean. It was built in 1887 from Nicholas Vranas, the grandfather of Odysseus Elytis, in the village of Papados. In 1999, the building became the propety of the non profit organization of Archipelago who undertook the project of restoration and conversion into a museum.

The Olive Oil Production Museum is housed in an old olive press in the village of Agia Paraskevi. The main goal of the museum is to present the technological development of olive oil production along the centuries.

The Petrified Forest Museum is located in the entrance of the Petrified Forest of Sigri. The mission of the museum is to promote, preserve and protect the fossils of the forest. The extensive collection of findings showcase the ecosystem of the Northeast Aegean since 20 million years ago.

The Theophilos Museum was founded from Stratis Eleftheriades in 1995. The museum displays the paintings of the famous local folklore artist Theofilos Hatzimihael located in the area of Akrotiri, a suburb of Mytilene.

Agia Paraskevi is a traditional village located on the central part of the island. The settlement has a traditional character with beautiful mansions and cobblestone alleys, known for its Bull Festival. One of the main attractions of the area is the old communal olive press that has been converted into the Museum of Olive. A few kilometres away lies the ancient temple of Klopedi, the sole sight of the country with remnants of the Aeolian architectural style and the ancient town of Messa that served as the center of worship for the ancient cities of Lesvos. An important folklore festival is held in the village known as the Bull Festival, a respectful feast in honour of Agios Charalambos, the protector of ploughmen.

Eressos is one of the most beautiful villages of the island located on the west side of the island. The village has managed to retain its authentic character embellished with traditional houses and narrow alleys. However, the most intriguing part is the haven of Eressos, known as Skala Eressos. It has one of the best beaches of country stretching over a length of two kilometres. The birthplace of poetess Sappho is an ideal place for those looking for tranquillity and relaxation. Kalloni is the nature capital of Lesvos located on the central part of the island. Mytilene is the artistic, commercial and industrial center of Lesvos with interesting museums, historical buildings, Ottoman monuments and archaeological sights. The forest extends over the northwest side of Lesvos in a region covered with volcanic stones. (5) Another beautiful route starts on the west side of the village of Mihos in the municipality of Evergetoula. The local specialties of the island include shrimp saganaki , a dish made from shrimps fried in olive oil with tomato and feta cheese, fried zucchini served with cheese and onions, dolmadakia , a dish made of vine leaves stuffed with rice and onions, lakerda , a fish dish made from bonito fillets that bloat with sea salt, sardines of Kalloni , one of the most renowned local dishes, and salted mackerel , a fish dish served with onions, oregano and vinegar.

Events & Festivals

Every Shrove Monday, the Carnival of Lesvos takes place in the village of Agiassos. It is one of the most famous carnivals of Greece, where thousands of people take part every year. The carnival of Agiassos distinguishes for its eccentricity, its mordacity and its satyrs. It is a unique sample of local folklore traditiuon.

Every June, the Bull Festival takes place in the village of Agia Paraskevi. The feast is accompanied through celebrations of three days including horse racings and animal sacrifices. The Bull Festival is a movable feast as it is held fifty days after Easter Sunday.

Every June, the Festival of Lesvos takes place in the island. Numerous cultural and musical events are held for a period of three months.

Every July, the Festival of Ouzo takes place in the village of Plomari. It is one of the most important gastronomical events of Greece celebrating one of the finest alcoholic drinks of the country. The festival lasts for three or five days.

Every July, the Festival of Molyvos takes place in the village of Molyvos. The festival hosts numerous cultural and musical events within the castle of Molyvos.

Every 4 th of July, the traditional celebration in honour of Agios Andreas takes place in the village of Eressos.

Every 26 th of July, the traditional celebration in honour of Agios Ermolaos takes place in the village of Paleokipos.

Every August, the Festival of Ceramics takes place in the village of Madamados.

Every August,  the Beach Street Festival takes place at the beach of Vatera. The festival hosts numerous musical events.

Every August, the Veniaminia Festival takes place in the village of Plomari. The festival hosts numerous cultural happenings during the last ten days of August.

Every August, the Festival of Sardine takes place in the village of Kaloni. The festival usually takes place in the first weekend of August accompanied from free ouzo and sardines followed from traditional music and dance.

Every 15 th of August, the traditional celebration in honour of Virgin Mary takes place in the church of Panagia Vrefokratousa in the village of Agiassos. It is one of the most important religious celebrations of Lesvos.

Every September, the International Women Festival takes place in the village of Eressos. The festival celebrates the achievements, culture and diversity of women regardless their race, age, interests, or sexuality.

Every autumn, the Chestnut Festival takes place in the village of Agiassos. Usually, the festival is held in November.

History & Mythology

According to mythology, Lesvos was the patron god of the island. The daughters of Makarios, the first king of the island, bequeathed their names to some of the present cities of the island.

Archaeological excavations show that Lesvos has been inhabited since the Neolithic times reaching the peak of an advanced civilization in the Bronze Age. The first settlers of the island were the Pelasgians, the Achaeans and the Aeolians. Lesvos became a centre of artistic, philosophical and maritime achievement during the 7 th century BC. However, the Persians conquered the island in the next century and the Athenians captured Lesvos in 479 BC, becoming a member of the Delian League. In 334 BC, the island became a part of the Macedonians falling under the rule of the Ptolemies after the death of Alexander the Great, followed from the Roman Empire, the Saracens and Latin and finally becoming a part of the Byzantine Empire. In 1354, Lesvos fell under the domination of the Genoese until 1460 when the Ottomans ruled Lesvos. The admiral Kountouriotis and his fleet liberated the island on 8th of November 1912 and Lesvos became a member of the Greek State in 1923 under the Treaty of Lausanne. Lesvos was conquered for the last time from the Germans during the Second World War and was set free on September of 1944.

Other Historical Information

Historical evidence shows that Alcaeus and Sappho were lyric poets who lived in Eressos. Alcaeus was known for love pieces while Sappho was known as an activist defying all conventions of the times who was exiled temporarily to Cecily, returning back to Lesvos to create a dance and music school. Moreover, Lesvos was the birthplace of other great Greek men of the arts and letters including Odysseus Elytis, the Nobel laureate poet, the novelist Stratis Myrivilis and Theophilos, the Greek primitive artist.

Lesvos, else known as Mytilene, is the third biggest island of Greece located between the islands of Chios and Lemnos. Agroutourism in Lesvos

Are you looking for simplicity, harmony, clean air, warm hospitality and relaxed atmosphere? If yes, you should definitely visit the farm of Toumba in Plomari. Toumba is a completely organic farm hosting eight horses, hundred of olive and fig tress and a small vineyard. In the village of Hidira, one will have the opportunity to explore the rich wine tradition of Lesvos at Methymnaos Winery. Lesvos is also known for its fine virgin olive oil. One can discover the rich tradition in olive oil at the Olive Forest of Gera. The harvesting season begins in October and ends in May. The dairy products of Mystakellis are of excellent quality. The cheese factory of Mystakellis, in Mandamados, was founded with the primary purpose of improving the quality of products without altering the traditional character.

Lesvos has the perfect environment for thousands native and migratory birds. The most famous wetland is located in Kalloni serving as a refugee and breeding site for numerous endangered bird species. Ouzo one of the finest products of the country and Lesvos is known for its ouzo. The precursor of ouzo is tsipouro, else known as raki, a drink distilled from the Byzantine Empire to the Ottoman times. Traditionally, tsipouro is said to have been the product of the monks living in a monastery on Holy Mount Athos during the 14 th century. The one version was flavoured with anise, eventually becoming ouzo. Following the Independence of Greece, the modern distillation of ouzo took place in the 19 th century with the majority of the production centered on the island of Lesvos that claims the origin of the ouzo. When absinthe fell into disfavour, ouzo became one of the favourite products as a substitute for absinthe. In 1932, ouzo producers developed a distillation method using copper still, which is now considered as the proper method of production. The production method of ouzo starts by distilling 96% of alcohol by volume with pure ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin in copper stills together with anise and optionally others flavourings including coriander, cinnamon and coriander. Ouzo is a flavored alcoholic solution known as flavoured ethyl alcohol or as ouzo yeast. The yeast is then usually mixed with 96% pure ethyl alcohol and sugar may be added and the mix is diluted with waters usually around 40%. The most common method of serving ouzo is by mixing it with water and ice in a small glass. When water is added to ouzo, crystal clean in colours, it turns milky white. This happens because the essential oil of anise, anethole, is soluble in alcohol not in water. In 2006, Ouzo became a product with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). Every Shrove Monday, the Carnival of Agiassos takes place in the village of Agiassos. It is one of the most famous carnivals of Greece, where thousands of people take part every year. Perched on a rock, the church of Taxiarhes is an architectural masterpiece of Byzantine architecture located in the village of Mandamados. According to tradition, the monastery was invaded from the Saracen pirates, who slaughtered the monks, with the exception of a new probationary monk who managed to hide in the ceiling of the church. From there, he saw the form of the Archangel hovering over the corpses of the monks. Then, he took clay, wax and the blood of the monks and created the icon of Taxiarhis. From this incident onwards, Taxiarhis is the patron saint of the island. Up until today, the inspiring picture with the large eyes of Archangel awes inspiring. Hiking to Mount Olympus is an experience of a lifetime! The trail starts from the southern entrance of the village, opposite of the Monument of the Soldiers, in the village of Agiassos. The paved path runs through the orchards of the area Folidi to Kadi Vrysi and continues uphill to Milandra until the rural road at Kameno Aloni. Although the road to the right is a dead end, it meets the trail at the location Marmaro, that climbs up to the rocky top of Mount Olympus. The views are really compensating!

Parakila is an overgrown village in the western coast of the bay of Kalloni, 12 kilometers away from the center of the town of Kalloni. It is one of the most scenic and productive villages of Lesvos built on a hillside between the rivers of Kardakis and Taxiarhis. The endless orange groves of the area give beautiful fragrances to the village. Lesbos (transliterated from Modern Greek as  Lesvos , sometimes also referred to as  Mytilini  after its major city Mytilene) is a Greek island located in the northeastern AegeanSea. It has an area of 1632 km² (630 square miles) with 320 kilometers (almost 200 miles) of coastline, making it the third largest Greek island and the largest of the numerous Greek islands scattered in the Aegean.

Molyvos – a must-see in Lesvos

The most famous of all the picturesque villages in Lesvos is Molyvos. Molyvos is a traditional village sitting right below an imposing Medieval castle on the slopes of a hill. It has the most breathtaking view towards the Aegean Sea. The narrow alleys of Molyvos are filled with restaurants, cafés, and bars – all with an amazing view of the Aegean Sea. Here you can enjoy some of the delicious grilled sardines or squids accompanied with great local ouzo. In the morning hours before the sun gets too hot, you can go and explore the old, impressive castle on the hilltop.

Mytilene International airport “Odysseas Elytis” is receiving flights from Athens as well as Thessaloniki all year round. Flight duration is about an hour from Athens. During high season in the summer, the airport receives flights from some European countries as well as flights from Heraklion (Crete) , Rhodes , Samos , and Chios .

You can also reach Lesvos by ferry. From Piraeus Port near Athens, the ferries depart for Lesvos 4 to 5 times per week. Lesvos is also connected with some islands, including Syros , Ikaria , Mykonos , and Chios as well as Kavala Port on the northern side of the Greek mainland. Some routes are also working between Lesvos and the Turkish port of Ayvalik.

Weather and climate in Lesvos

Lesvos island has, like the other islands in the Northeastern Aegean Sea, a typical Mediterranean climate with strong north and northwestern winds. The summer is hot with extraordinarily little rainfall and the winter is short and mild with a lot of rain.

Lesvos in Greece is a large island with many great beaches – some of which are organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, and watersport centers, while other beaches are secluded and perfect for privacy.

Island hopping from Lesvos

Lesvos in Greece is perfect for relaxing holidays, off the beaten track in the easternmost part of the Aegean Sea. Being one of the largest Greek islands, it is spacious with many activities and sights, but if you have days enough during your travel, Lesvos is also a perfect base for island hopping, thanks to its short distance to the islands of Chios and L e mnos .

Rent a car for a day or two and drive around the island of Lesvos to get to see the many historical monuments of the island. From Roman aqueducts to Byzantine castles and monasteries, you will find the opportunity to explore sites dating several historical periods back. Most important monuments are the Medieval castles of Mytilene, Molyvos and Sigri, all of which used to protect the towns of Lesvos against attacks from pirates.

Of course, on your travel to Lesvos in Greece, another must-see is the Petrified Forest in Sigri, which you will find on the western side of the island. The forest was due to volcanic activity petrified 15 to 20 million years ago. It is considered worldwide to be a rare geological monument.

The Petrified Forests of Lesvos

The petrified forest has been declared a  Protected Natural Monument , included also in the  European Geopark Network . Fossilized plants have been found in many localities on the western part of the island. The fossilized forest was formed during the Late Oligocene to Lower–Middle Miocene, by the intense volcanic activity in the area. Neogene volcanic rocks dominate the central and western part of the island, comprising andesites, dacites and rhyolites, ignimbrite, pyroclastic, tuffs, and volcanic ash. The products of the volcanic activity covered the vegetation of the area and the fossilization process took place during favorable conditions. The fossilized plants are silicified remnants of a sub-tropical forest that existed on the north-west part of the island 20-15 million years ago.

Significant monasteries on Lesvos

If you love to explore historical monuments in Lesvos you will find many old monasteries, like the Monastery of Ipsilou and the Monastery of Saint Raphael, who also happens to be the protector of Lesvos.

12 historic churches on Lesvos

Twelve historic churches on the island were listed together on the 2008  World Monuments Fund’s Watch List  of the  100 Most Endangered Sites  in the world. Exposure to the elements, outmoded conservation methods, and increased tourism are all threats to the structures. Hopefully, the increased attention to their declining states will aid in their preservation.

Towns and villages in Lesvos

Its population is approximately 90,000, a third of which lives in its capital, Mytilene, in the southeastern part of the island. The remaining population is distributed in small towns and villages. The largest are Kalloni, the Gera Villages, Plomari, Agiassos, Eresos, and Molyvos (the ancient  Mythymna ). Mytilene was founded in the 11th century BC by the family  Penthilidae , who arrived from Thessaly, and ruled the city-state until a popular revolt (590–580 BC) led by  Pittacus of Mytilene  ended their rule.

The nature of Lesvos

The island is forested and mountainous with two large peaks, Mt. Lepetymnos at 968 m (3,176 ft) and Mt. Olympus at 967 m (3,173 ft), dominating its northern and central sections. The island’s volcanic origin is manifested in several hot springs and the two gulfs.

Ancient history of Lesbos

According to Classical Greek mythology,  Lesbos  was the patron god of the island. The oldest artifacts found on the island date to the Paleolithic period. Important archaeological sites on the island are the Neolithic cave of Kagiani, probably a refuge for shepherds, the Neolithic settlement of  Chalakies , and the extensive habitation of  Thermi  (3000–1000 BC). The largest habitation is found in  Lisvori  (2800–1900 BC) part of which is submerged in shallow coastal waters. There are also several archaic, classical Greek and Roman remains.  Vitruvius  called the ancient city of  Mytilene  “magnificent and of good taste”. Remnants of its medieval history are three impressive castles.

Famous persons from Lesbos

Lesbos  is the birthplace of several famous persons. In archaic times,  Arion  developed the type of poem called dithyramb, the progenitor of tragedy, and  Terpander  invented the seven-note musical scale for the lyre. Two of the nine lyric poets in the Ancient Greek canon,  Alcaeus,  and  Sappho , were from   Lesbos. Phanias wrote history. In modern times the poet  Odysseus Elytis , descendant of an old family of Lesbos received the Nobel Prize.

Everything You Need To Know When Traveling To Lesbos Island

Recently I visited one of the most popular Northern Aegean Islands: Lesbos, Greece. Soaking up the last rays of summer sun when the rest of Europe was getting cold. This peaceful island was putting a summer smile on my face at the end of Autumn. Lesbos is a great place to go off the beaten path in Europe . In this blog you can read how I explored the island by car and checked out all the Lesbos tourist spots with some amazing things to do and places to visit. Lesvos or Lesbos

Let get this misunderstanding out of our way straight away. The official name is Lesvos as in Greek spelling the name of the island is Λέσβος and the letter ‘β’ is pronounced as a ‘v’. That is why local authorities name the island Lesvos. But as in English the ‘v’ is pronounced as a ‘b’, almost everyone writes Lesbos and that is also why I chose to name it Lesbos in this article. The island is often confused with ‘Lesbian’, the international term for homosexual women, but that has actually to do with a lady called Sappho who was born on the island a couple hundred years before Christ. She wrote poems with in which she expresses a strong desire for other women. Got it? :)

Now that we have all the facts right, let's travel to Lesbos and look at the things to do on the island.

Where is Lesbos Island

If you would look at the map and look for Lesbos Greece, you would almost think this island is be part of Turkey, but nope it is still part of Greece.

In fact if you walk out of the Lesbos Island airport and look across the water you will see Turkey mainland. The difference between Europe and Asia is only 7 kilometers here. Therefore I also named Lesbos Island in a list of hidden gems travel destinations in Europe in 2023 .

This was the view over Turkey on the other side when I walked out of the airport.

How to get to Lesbos

There are regular daily flights to Lesbos arriving on Mytilini International Airport. Domestic flights mostly arrive from either Athens or Thessaloniki, international flight come directly from Northern Europe as the biggest markets for Lesbos tourism is Scandinavia, Holland, Germany and the UK.

Ferries to and from Lesbos Island

There are of course also ferries that connect the island. Hopping on a ferry is in most cases significantly cheaper than a flight to Lesbos, but journeys are pretty long. Before the pandemic there were daily ferries (12h) from Piraeus to Mytillene. There is normally also a ferry from Lesbos to Thessaloniki that goes through Limnos Island.

Because of the global pandemic a lot of ferries are not operating, therefore I recommend you to check the below public transport search engine that includes all operating ferries in Greece.

Ferry from Lesbos to Turkey

There is also a boat connection with Turkey for people who are on an onward journey. If you are traveling from Europe to Turkey the Greek Island Lesbos can be your last stop in Europe.

How to get around in Lesbos Greece

There are public busses and I spoke to some backpackers traveling in Lesbos, but they weren't convincing. Traveling by public transport in Lesvos is not ideal at all! Bus schedules cant be really trusted and journey are long. One of the best things to do in Lesbos is to rent a car for your own convenience. Cars can be rented straight at the airport and you can already find car rentals for 1 week for €150. You just gotta search a little. Here are two local websites for car rentals:

The island is not the typical popular Greek island where mass tourism killed the vibe. Lesbos Island is still a place where you can find the authentic Greek laid-back lifestyle. The island is a hotspot for those tourist that are looking to have a drink on the side of the ocean overlooking idyllic bays and pretty calm beaches. Looking for that Mediterranean lifestyle? You will find it on a trip to Lesbos. Even after the main tourist season that is of course during the European summer, Lebos is still a great place to visit in Greece in October .

Things to do in Lesbos

If you rent a car it is not a question of what to do in Lesbos, but more about what can you do in the number of days you have. There are so many things to do in Lesbos that I would recommend you to stay on the island for about 6 days and stay overnight at at least 2 different places. But more about that later.

1. Visit Molyvos

This is the most iconic town of Lesbos Island and such picture perfect place. Of all the things to do in Lesbos you cannot miss this one.

Molyvos is the pearl of the Greek island Lesbos with its town perched into the cliffs with the majestic castle on top like a guard keeping an eye on the town and its surroundings. Lesbos tourism can be proud to have such a jewel.

The tiny little streets leading uphill to the castle are adorned with numerous cute coffee places, souvenirs shops, bakeries and ice cream stalls. This is such a lovely place and a must do during your Lesbos holidays.

2. Hike, climb, bike or go horse riding in Molyvos

If you are looking what to do in Lesbos in terms of activities then this Northern region is perfect for you as well. There are many great hiking routes available, mountain biking tours can be found even as rock climbing. I passed these activities but went horse riding instead.

3. Scuba diving in Lesbos

Go scuba diving in Lesbos. There are amazing shipwrecks and the visibility is exceptional. Have a look here for more info about  scuba diving in Lesbos .

4. Glass bottom boat tour

Lesbos holidays aren’t complete without a boat tour of course. In the morning the sea was completely flat and we decided to book the glass bottom boat Calypso . They also organize barbecue tours to the nearby Rabbit Island.

5. Visit the idyllic town of Petra

Petra is a little beach town with narrow streets and a kind of boulevard. Its beach is a popular hangout with sun beds and umbrellas in the peak season but the reason I went was the Panagia Glykofiloussa or in English the Church of Virgin Maria on top of the rock looming large over the little village.

There are 114 stairs that lead up to the church with an impressive interior and an even impressive view.

6. Have lunch in Skala Sikamnia

This is probably the cutest town on Lesbos island. It feels like there are a couple houses built around a little fishing marina and a church.

The ocean around this part of the island is crystal clear but I fell in love with the little colorful restaurants surrounding the marina.

A perfect place to have lunch on the water or jump in.

7. Pottery Art workshop in Mantamados

An hour drive southeast from Molyvos there is the sleepy little village of Mantamados that is famous for its pottery art. There are many workshops you can sign up for and it is great fun to try and make pottery and I can tell you it is not as easy as it may seem!

8. Monastery of Taxiarches

Just outside of Mantamados there is a beautiful monastery with an incredible church. Unfortunately it was not allowed to take pictures inside, but this is a photo from the peaceful courtyard.

9. Museum of industrial Olive Production

This museum will show you how they produced olive oil about a 100 year ago. The machinery and the production hall are still intact and the coolest thing is the whole process still works.

The entrance is a couple dollars and well worth checking out. On your way to The Museum Of Industrial Olive Production you will see the Olive plantations and be careful for wild sheep as they may suddenly cross the road! And the best things about visiting this museum is some samples of their products! 

10. Birdwatching in the Wetlands

The flamingo is not something you would travel to Lesbos for in the first place I guess but damn I had never seen flamingos in Europe (didn’t even know they existed on our continent). There are bunch of bird watching places around and some watch towers to climb into. I wish I had a zoom lens! :)

11. 4x4 Safari Lepetymnos Mountain

Get to the highest point in Lesbos at 994 meters above sea level in a 4x4 jeep and see wild horses on your way. You are able to feed them even. From the top of the Lepetymnos Mountain you have breathtaking views over Lesbos all the way to Asia. One of the coolest things to do in Lesbos when you ask me. 12. Petrified Forest

The Natural History of The Lesbos Island Petrified History Museum is the main tourist drag on this side of the island. This geological museum shows you fossils dating more than 20 million years ago, which apparently give away a lot of information about the existence of the earth. Definitely interesting for those who are into these kind of geological facts and studies.

The town of Sigri is not the most popular place on a greek island. Lesbos has more beautiful towns but people come here for to escape the tourists. Sigri tends to be more quiete and beaches are not busy at all. Also Sigri is due to strong winds always a little cooler and therefore in the hot summer months more pleasant. It has a small Turkish castle and some restaurants, but that is about it.

14. Mytilini

Of course don’t skip the vibrant capital of Lesbos Island. Mytilini is where everything happens in terms of nightlife and where young people gather. There is a University and a lot of lovely coffee shops, a shopping street, artistic cafes and hip bars. Terraces are full of people and at nighttime the city comes alive in the area around Sappho Square.

15. Archeological Museum Mytilini

Roam around the harbour in the morning and look at all the fishing boats coming in and out. Visit the fish market and watch the big ferries arriving then head up to the archaeological museum where you can find remnants of houses dating back from before Christ and pottery and statues from ages ago. It was pretty interesting, entrance fee is €4.

16. Castle of Mytilini

To get the best views over Mytilene head up to the castle on top of the hill. The entrance fee is €3, but the views from the fortified walls are worth it. Even in summer it is pretty quiet up here. Check out the Mytilene Caste's Wikipedia Page for more info and history.

17. Therma hot springs

For just a couple dollar you can dip into the hot springs overlooking the Bay of Geras. Therma Spa is a perfect place for a relaxing afternoon plus they have delicious sandwiches and good coffee. This place is totally worth it and among my favorite things to do in Lesvos.

18. Agiasos

About 40 minutes drive up hill from Mytilini you can find the sleepy but beautiful mountain village of Agiasos. The narrow and steep cobblestoned streets are amazing to wander through and surely you will find local hidden gems like small restaurants with authentic food, cute souvenir shops, etc.

The little square houses a bunch of colorful restaurants and some places to have a drink around a church. I really loved this cute little town with its steep streets and colorful houses. Such a photogenic pituresque village perfect for Instagram shots with old colorful houses and small wooden doors.

19. Plomari

Last but not least make sure to visit the town of Plomari or even stay here overnight. This cute town is the birthplace of the well-known Greek signature drink: Ouzo. There are 2 Ouzo Museums that can be visited: Barbayanni Ouzo  and World of Ouzo .

The vibe in Plomari was cool, I liked hanging out there plus it had some beautiful deserted beaches close to the city. Sadly my Lesbos itinerary did not make me stay there overnight, but next time I visit Lesvos, I definitely will do so.

Best beaches in Lesbos Greece

With more than 350 kilometers coastline there is plenty of choice is you want to find a beach that suits your mood. Deserted beaches, rocky, pebbled beaches, cliffs, hidden bays and popular beach spots with beach huts and sun beds. My favorite beaches in Lesvos are:

• Stefanos Beach in Agios
• Eftalou Beach in Molyvos
• Skala Kallonis Beach in Kalloni

Where to stay in Lesbos

The best thing to do is to stay in at least two different places on the island. Lesbos has two main tourist drags that cannot be missed, so I recommend to stay around Molyvos and Mytilini for sure. A third place to stay would be around the Sigri in the West to see the Museum of the Petrified Forest and discover some deserted beaches and bays.

Lesbos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

If you travel to Lesbos you now know what to do and where to sleep, but what I did not mention yet is that Lesbos Island is a UNESCO world heritage site, yes the complete island!

The rich history, the culture, beautiful nature and its friendly people all contributed towards international recognition of this lovely island. Whether you come to relax and visit its peaceful little fishing villages, you come to hike, bike or dive or you come for its many beaches and clear blue waters I am sure your Lesbos holidays will be a winner.

Perched in the eastern Aegean Sea just off the west coast of Turkey, Lesbos is Greece’s third-largest island. Its 630 square miles contain stunning and diverse ecosystems, from the flat, dry plains in the west to the dense, mountainous forests in the east and the tranquil sandy beaches on the coasts.

It’s a popular holiday destination for European travelers as well as tourists from around the world, who cherish the island for its charming villages, beautiful beaches and historic landmarks.

Best Time to Visit Lesbos

With its typical Mediterranean climate, Lesbos offers more days of sunshine than almost any other island in the Aegean Sea, making it a wonderful place to visit year-round. Each season offers its own charms, so here’s what to expect as you plan your trip:

• Summer: Like most of the Greek islands, Lesbos sees its biggest crowds during the summer high season from June to mid-September. The warmest and driest months for swimming and sunbathing are July and August; you can also expect to pay the highest prices for accommodations and travel during the summer.
• Fall: From mid-September until mid-November, the weather on Lesbos is still quite pleasant, and the summer crowds have thinned out considerably. You may experience a few rainy days, but overall temperatures will be mild.
• Winter: From December to mid-March, crowds on Lesbos are almost nonexistent and hotel prices will be at their lowest point of the year. However, the weather will be somewhat chilly, with daytime high temperatures ranging from 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid visiting in January, when rainfall hits its peak.
• Spring: Starting in mid-March and extending through May, spring is a beautiful time to visit Lesbos, with the sea air starting to warm and flowers blooming across the island. It probably won’t be warm enough to swim, but it’s an ideal time for a visit to the island’s famed hot springs.

Getting to Lesbos

Multiple ferries run between Athens’ Piraeus port and Lesbos each week, with frequency somewhat influenced by the season of your visit. You can also catch a ferry from the port of Kavala in northern Greece as well as from several other islands, including Mykonos , Chios and Ikaria. In the summer, a ferry runs daily between Lesbos and the port of Ayvalik in Turkey; in the off-season, it may be available only one or two days per week.

Flights from Athens and Thessaloniki arrive year-round at Mytilene International Airport, located near the capital city center. During the busy summer season, flights from Heraklion, Chios, Samos and Rhodes may also be available.

Staying in Lesbos

On an island this size, it’s not surprising that Lesbos has such a wide variety of accommodations, from sprawling luxury resorts to small, quaint inns. Consider booking a stay at one of these top picks:

• Elysion : This newly-built beachfront property in Mytilene is conveniently located just minutes from the airport. How Long to Stay in Lesbos

Despite its size, Lesbos doesn’t offer the same level of organized tours, activities and nightlife as other Aegean islands like Santorini and Mykonos. If you don’t mind a relaxed, unstructured vacation spent mainly sunbathing and exploring the outdoors, you could easily spend five to seven days here, but its proximity to Turkey and other popular Greek islands make it a good candidate for inclusion in an island-hopping vacation. If this is the route you take, two or three days on Lesbos should suffice.

Things to Do in Lesbos

Unlike some of its more developed neighbors, Lesbos has managed to preserve a largely traditional feel, with quaint fishing villages, rustic beaches and ancient castles among the key attractions on this sprawling island. Depending on the length of your stay, you’ll want to include some or all of the following on your itinerary:

Castle of Molyvos

Built in the mid-13 th century on top of a tree-lined hill, the Castle of Molyvos is a multilevel structure featuring imposing walls, coats of arms and other decorative elements. The castle was renovated several times over the centuries and still bears the influences of Turkish and Italian invaders in its design. The castle is open to the public daily and hosts concerts, lectures and other cultural events during the summer months.

Medieval Castle of Mytilene

This highly-fortified castle is believed to have been constructed by the Byzantines in the 5 th century to defend the city from the pirates that roamed the Mediterranean. Like the Castle of Molyvos, this castle was renovated by Ottoman and Genovese conquerors.

Petrified Forest

Located on the western side of the island, the Petrified Forest of Lesbos was formed 20 million years ago when a massive volcanic eruption blanketed the region in lava and ash. At more than 100 square miles, it is believed to be the largest petrified forest in the world, with fossilized trunks and roots up to 50 feet long and 10 feet in diameter dotting the sandy landscape.

World of Ouzo Museum

Tour the World of Ouzo Museum in Isidoros Arvanitis, where one of the most famous brands of Greece’s national beverage is produced. Visitors will witness the distillery process from raw ingredients to bottling and see a collection of ouzo artifacts and antique distillery equipment.

Lesbos Archaeological Museum

Located in the capital city of Mytilene, this two-building complex houses artifacts from excavations throughout the island, including fragments of ancient temples, statues, coins, jewelry and more.

Ipsilou Monastery

This picturesque structure is perched atop the highest peak in the Ordimnos Mountain Range, overlooking the village of Andissa. Founded in 800 A.D., the main structure was erected three centuries later and survived repeated raids by the Ottomans.

Inside the monastery, visitors can examine several large Byzantine icons as well as jewel-studded crosses, historic manuscripts and other interesting relics.

Caves of Lesbos

Roughly 200 caves are scattered around the island of Lesbos, many of which have never been explored. Ancient pottery and other artifacts have been discovered in the largest cave, Magaras, which is near Mytilene and is thought to have been used as a primitive worship site.

The cave of Agios Ioannis in Thermi features two marble-lined corridors, and several ancient tombs have been discovered inside. Other notable caves include the cave of Agios Vartholomeos in Taxiarches and the Cave of Glastra in Agiassos.

Lesbos Beaches

The beaches of Lesbos are the island’s crown jewels, with some offering bustling crowds and organized activities and others providing secluded retreats.

• Agios Isidoros Beach: This pebbled beach about 25 miles southeast of Mytilene is famous for its clear blue waters and pristine setting. It’s a popular destination for snorkeling and diving, thanks to unusual underwater rock formations and thriving sea life.
• Mytilene Beach: This structured beach near the port features shallow waters and plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas, making it a perfect location for swimming and sunbathing. It’s convenient to many hotels and restaurants and a good choice for families.
• Petra Beach: About 35 miles northwest of Mytilene, Petra Beach is a well-known tourist resort with amenities like umbrellas, beach chairs, showers and changing rooms, as well as a few nearby taverns and cafes.
• Molyvos Beach: This beach on the north end of the island has been awarded the European Union’s Blue Flag designation for its pristine waters, making it an ideal location for snorkeling and diving as well as other water sports.
• Vatera Beach: This vast, picturesque beach is about 30 miles southwest of Mytilene and features fine, golden sand and crystal-clear waters that have earned it the Blue Flag every year for decades.
• Eftalou Beach: About 40 miles northwest of Mytilene, Eftalou is known for the natural springs that line the pebbled beachfront; dozens of hotels, restaurants and other amenities are located nearby.

Getting Around Lesbos

Given the size of the island, you’ll want to give serious thought to your transportation options as you plan your trip.

• Renting a car will give you the most flexibility and freedom to explore Lesbos, and many travelers consider it well worth the cost.
• Taxis and private transfers are available through most of the hotels on the island, although the costs can add up quickly. If you plan to spend most of your trip in Mytilene or one of the other larger cities, this might be a reasonable option.
• Lesbos has a relatively robust public transportation system , which is an inexpensive way to get around, but it may mean spending much of your vacation sitting on a bus or waiting for one to arrive.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a rustic, relaxed destination among the Greek islands, it’s hard to go wrong with a visit to Lesbos. Its sandy beaches, lush olive groves and rolling hills will appeal to nature lovers, while history buffs will enjoy exploring its historic castles and ancient caves.

Explore the Palace of Knossos.

Dive into more than 4,000 years of Greek history at the Palace of Knossos , Crete's most iconic archaeological site. The ancient complex is absolutely massive, and it comes with a gorgeous view of the sea thanks to its position high on the hill. "Crete's most famous archaeological site is the great Minoan Palace of Knossos, the oldest, largest, and most elaborate of these sites," Peter Sommer of Peter Sommer Travels , shared. "In its wide courts, shaded colonnades, and intricate arrangements of room after room, floor after floor, one can really come to grips with a civilization from far back in the Bronze Age, and grapple with questions that are still hotly debated – what did these palaces look like, what were they for, who lived in them, and how did they function?"

Hike the Samaria Gorge.

Outdoor lovers will adore spending a day hiking through the Samaria Gorge, a lengthy hike through Crete's White Mountains. The hike stretches on for nearly 10 miles through ancient cypress and pine forests and the abandoned village of Samaria before ending at the sea. However, the most famous part of the hike has to be the "Gates," where the gorge is just 13 feet apart but is more than 1,500 feet high. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time if you plan to hike the entire trail. The park's official site estimates that it takes about five hours to complete the journey.

Visit the Old Venetian Harbor of Chania.

Take a stroll through the Old Venetian Harbor of Chania and take in all the colors of Greece. Travelers can walk past homes and buildings showcasing Crete's unique melding of history, including all its Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek influences. Shop in its boutiques, grab a frappe in a cafe, view the massive fortress, and dine on plenty of fresh ingredients (hello, Greek salads) at its waterfront restaurants. Just make sure to have your camera ready, as its colorful buildings make for the perfect Instagram backdrop. 

Learn something new at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

Get an even deeper education on the island's history with a visit to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum , which houses the world's most comprehensive collection of artifacts from the Minoan civilization. Its most famous exhibit is the Phaistos Disc, a clay disc sporting more than 240 symbols that is said to be more than 3,000 years old. As the museum notes, "experts have not yet a definitive conclusion of the contents of the inscription," so maybe you can uncover what it all means during your visit.

Elafonissi Beach

Get ready to step foot on one of the world's most beautiful and romantic beaches, Elafonissi Beach . The stretch of shoreline is well-known for its pink sand — created by millions of crushed seashells —that disappears into shallow, turquoise waters. The beach, which is part of a nature reserve, is an ideal spot for families with small children thanks to the calm waters, but there are also plenty of spots for adults to put down their towels and umbrellas for a quiet day at the beach. 

Balos Lagoon

One more brilliant beach to visit is Balos Lagoon , a beach made up of brilliant white sand that's lapped by unbelievably blue water. "One of the most popular must-see places in the Chania region is the Balos Lagoon with hypnotizing turquoise waters and a panoramic landscape," Alonso Marly, a travel expert at Skylux Travel , said. "I suggest visiting the beach early in the morning to experience the lagoon at its most tranquil and skip the tourist crowds." 

Find a different style of landscape at Vai Beach , famous for the palm forest lining the coast. Once again, it's a spot where travelers can find warm, sandy beaches and beautiful blue waters, just this time with the bonus of tree shade for the perfect beach snooze.

The best time to visit Crete is from June to August when the weather on the island is at its prime. As WeatherSpark notes, the warmest weather can be found between early June and late September, when the average daily high temperature hits above 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Things get particularly hot in July, when the average temperature hits 84 degrees. 

"When it comes to the best times to visit Crete, keep in mind that the island is seasonal, and during winter months, most of its attractions are closed," Marly added. "However, throughout the high season, it is full of life day and night." 

But, if you're looking to escape the crowds, try plotting a visit during the island's shoulder seasons, which fall over April to May and September to early October.  

 "If possible, I recommend visiting the island during the shoulder season when it's not too hot and crowded – from April to June or September through October — to make the most of your authentic Greek holiday, full of sunshine and unforgettable experiences," Marly said.  

Crete is accessible via its international airports in Heraklion (Heraklion International Airport, HER) and Chania (Chania International Airport, CHQ). Heraklion is the island's busiest airport, and it is also the second-largest airport in Greece, just behind Athens. Several major airlines fly into the airport, including Emirates, Aegean, RyanAir, EasyJet, and KLM. 

For those looking to avoid the airport, there is a ferry option, but be warned: It's a long ride. Travelers can hop aboard a ferry from Piraeus Port in Athens to Heraklion or Chania, but the ride can take between nine and 10 hours.

The best and easiest way to get around Crete is with your own car. Remember, this is Greece's largest island, so if you want to explore more widely, you will need some wheels. There are a ton of rental car companies on the island, including big names like Avis, Budget, and Hertz, all ready to loan you a ride. 

Public Transit

Crete also has a robust public bus system that can get you to most points of interest. Just note the buses here tend to move more slowly than cars, but it's also a rather affordable option, with rides starting at just a few euros. 

Scooters are also a rather popular mode of transportation here, as they are in almost all of the Greek islands. Visitors do need a valid license to rent scooters and must wear a helmet while riding.

Traveling by train is one of Ireland ’s great, if under-appreciated, pleasures.

It’s a small island and the rail network is limited, so no journey is especially long – but riding the rails across the country is one of the loveliest ways to enjoy the rolling countryside.

Compared to its European counterparts, Irish trains aren’t especially spectacular, but this is a country that doesn’t need high-speed or sleeper trains: you roll along at a maximum of 160km/h (99mph) and before you know it you’re on the other side of the island.

The particular nature of Irish demographics has shaped train travel in Ireland: with around a quarter of the population clustered in the greater Dublin region, it makes sense that most train journeys begin or end in the capital. In Northern Ireland the same is true of Belfast .

Irish trains might not be especially quick or super luxurious, but they’re an efficient and eco-friendly way of exploring the island – so long as your explorations are focused on the major cities and towns. Here is our essential guide to train travel in Ireland.

The lowdown on rail travel in Ireland

Irish trains are efficient, relatively frequent and usually on time.  Irish Rail/Iarnród Éireann operates the entire network of trains in the Republic, from intercity trains linking the major urban centers to the busy commuter network that services the greater Dublin region.

There are two main lines into the west and three into the south and southwest; spurs off the main lines connect to a host of smaller towns throughout the country. There’s also a line to Belfast, from where  Translink services connect the city with the Antrim Coast and Derry (Londonderry) .

Within the greater Dublin region, a network of commuter services connects the capital with a host of suburbs and dormitory towns in the surrounding counties. Dublin’s coastline between the northside suburbs of Howth and Malahide, and Greystones in County Wicklow is served by DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) trains.

There are some notable gaps in the country’s rail network, with no services in counties Donegal , Monaghan and Cavan , and no trains into West Cork . Some towns – like Buttevant in Cork or Annacotty in Limerick – are on the rail line but they’re bypassed as they have no functioning station.

Ireland’s bigger train stations – including Cork , Limerick , Galway , Sligo, Belfast and the two in Dublin – are all pretty well stocked when it comes to picking up supplies and other assorted sundries for your journey. Most other stations will have a small shop.

Train tickets are relatively good value

The good news about traveling by train in Ireland is that it is relatively inexpensive compared to train travel in some places, such as the UK, for example. If you buy it online, a standard one-way fare between Dublin Heuston and Kent Station in Cork costs €30–35, and around €55 in first class.

Online is the best place to buy your tickets for train travel in the Irish Republic. Not only do you get the best fares (with savings of up to 50% compared to buying the ticket at the station), but you can purchase your ticket up to 90 days in advance and reserve a seat when you do.

You have the option of collecting your bought ticket from a machine at the station as you’re boarding, or downloading a QR code at the point of purchase. If you wait to buy your ticket at the station, you’ll pay significantly more and have to get there early to queue up at the ticket kiosk.

For travel in Northern Ireland, you’re better off buying the ticket at the station as only a limited number of tickets are available online. Show up a short time before your intended departure time and just buy your ticket there.

Only a handful of services offer first class, but upgrading is relatively inexpensive. On average, expect to pay around €20–25 more to sit in first. There are three kinds of first class service on Irish trains. CityGold is on direct Dublin to Cork services, and includes an onboard host and a complimentary newspaper on selected early morning services. The Enterprise service between Dublin and Belfast offers the same, plus a fine breakfast. Premier Class is similar, but is only available on direct services between Dublin and Tralee and some Dublin to Cork trains.

Some discounts and offers apply

There are discounted fares for children and young adults aged between 19 and 25, as long as they have a valid discount card. Under fives and those aged 66 and over travel for free.

The commuter network in the Greater Dublin area has a fare cap of €6 for travel between the capital and a host of towns in the surrounding counties.

There are two rail passes aimed at visitors. The Trekker Four Day (€88) offers unlimited travel for adults on all Irish Rail services on four consecutive days from the date of issue. The Explorer (adult/child €128/64) provides five days of travel on all services in a 15-day window.

However, before investing in either, be sure that you plan on making the most out of it. The limited rail network means that connections are limited and traveling between some destinations involves backtracking: Cork and Waterford are both on the south coast, but to get from one to the other means travelling to Limerick, while Sligo and Westport are only 140km (87 miles) apart along the west coast, but to go between them by train you’ll have to travel through Dublin – which is on the other side of the country.

In Northern Ireland, the Sunday Fun Day Tracker ticket gives passengers unlimited train travel on a Sunday for £9 (£4.50 for children). Tickets are available from all ticket offices, the mLink ticketing app and from the conductor on the train.

These are the busiest times to travel by train

Unsurprisingly, peak times for train travel coincide with busy rush hour periods. Early morning services to Dublin from cities including Cork, Galway and Limerick can be busy, especially if the train is due to arrive in Dublin around the start of the working day. Friday evening trains departing Dublin can also be quite busy. However, as online bookings also include the option of booking a seat, you’ll never have to stand.

The commuter network is busiest on weekdays from 7am to 9am and from 4:30pm to 6:30pm as thousands of people travel in and out of work. You can’t prebook seats on these services, so plenty of people do end up standing. Keep an eye out on changing schedules, especially for weekend and holiday travel, as frequencies diminish.

The train network is limited, but it has some benefits over road travel

There are no rail links to any Irish airport, which means you’re relying on taxis, private cars or buses once you arrive in the country. Irish ferry ports are better connected to rail lines, however, and you can catch trains in Rosslare, Dublin and Larne; there is no rail link to Belfast Port.

If you want to reach the more remote corners of the island, then the Irish rail network is quite limited, and a car will give you the flexibility you need. However, rental fees can be very expensive and fuel is another considerable cost, with the price of unleaded and diesel hovering between €1.75 and €2 a liter. Parking is also pricey in all urban centers, especially Dublin.

Traveling by bus is the cheapest way to get around, but it can be a slow business, as most make lots of stops along the way. There are some direct express services, but they are at the mercy of traffic, which can also add considerable time to a journey compared to traveling by train. Plus, buses don’t have bathrooms, with those traveling longer distances relying entirely on rest stops.

On board facilities vary depending on the type of train

There are two kinds of Irish trains: InterCity and commuter. InterCity trains are all the same – relatively modern with comfortable seats in standard class and fancier recliners in first – and they travel at speeds of up to 160km/h (99mph). There’s no journey in Ireland that is longer than 2½ to 3 hours. Commuter trains are slightly older, with less comfortable seats; older trains are used on some small-distance spur lines in rural areas and are very basic (facilities include seats and a toilet).

While Ireland’s flagship service is the one between Dublin and Cork, the fanciest train is the Enterprise service between Dublin Connolly and Belfast Lanyon Place, which is a joint venture between Irish Rail and Translink. This train is on a par with most services you’ll find in mainland Europe and first class is the most luxurious of any in the country.

All InterCity trains have three-pin sockets at every row where you can plug in a charger or a laptop. Most commuter trains in the greater Dublin area also have sockets. All trains have toilets and there is a cross-network wi-fi service operated by Irish Rail, but it is patchy and inconsistent. Translink has its own wi-fi network, which is accessible on all bus and rail services in the north, but, like in the Republic, you’re at the mercy of signal strength and contention levels.

Food options are pretty limited. There is a trolley service on the Dublin to Cork service, while the Enterprise between Dublin and Belfast operates a full service menu in a dedicated dining car; first class passengers also get a pretty good breakfast as part of their ticket.

Some trains on the Dublin to Cork route have a “quiet carriage” (usually Carriage G, marked in purple when booking) where the use of phones is prohibited and passengers are encouraged to keep noise levels down.

You can bring a bike on any Irish Rail train for free, although there are some restrictions during busy periods (such as sporting fixtures and concerts). The Dublin to Cork line is the only one to have a dedicated bike storage area; all other InterCity trains have (very) limited bicycle spaces within the passenger compartment – it’s not unusual for only two bikes to be allowed into the compartment, so be sure to book in advance. Bikes are not allowed on commuter and DART services during peak hours – before 10am and from 3:30pm to 7pm Monday to Friday.

There are many scenic train routes: here are the best

No matter where you are in Ireland you’re going to find a beautiful landscape or two, but some journeys are worth keeping your eyes wide open for.

Dublin to Sligo

Once you’ve gone past the huge suburban sprawl of the greater Dublin area, the landscapes get quite gentle; beyond Mullingar the train skirts alongside the edge of beautiful Lough Owel. For the best views, sit on the left-hand side of the train.

Dublin to Belfast

The Enterprise service is the best in the country, with the most comfortable seats and the best food options – especially in first class. The train skirts alongside the Irish Sea between Malahide and Balbriggan, so be sure to sit on that side as you travel (on the right-hand side if you’re traveling to Belfast).

Derry (Londonderry) to Coleraine

The Translink service between Northern Ireland’s second city and Coleraine is a stunner, a 40-minute journey along the Causeway Coast that comes with beautiful beaches, huge cliffs and unimpeded views out over the North Sea.

Downpatrick to Inch Abbey

It’s only a 10-minute journey, but the trip from Downpatrick in County Down to the monastic ruins of Inch Abbey takes place in a vintage steam train (or a 1960s diesel train) that chugs its way along the line, over the River Quoile and past the drumlin-specked landscape.

Cork to Cobh

One of Ireland’s most scenic trips is the 25-minute trip from Cork City to the seaside town of Cobh , which takes you along the river (sit on the right for the best views), past marshy Harper’s Island and over the bridges on Lough Mahon and the Slatty Water. You can always stop off at Fota and visit the  wildlife park  there.

Book in advance for wheelchair access to trains

All InterCity services are nominally accessible, but if you do need assistance you will need to book it in advance so that suitable arrangements can be made. This usually means that a conductor will have a ramp ready for wheelchair access, but we have also heard plenty of anecdotal evidence of staff simply lifting a wheelchair onto a train, which depending on the individual can either be a help or an annoying hindrance. Whatever you do, make sure to communicate your requirements before you travel as assistance is not guaranteed otherwise.

For passengers with learning difficulties or any issue where there may be a challenge with communication (such as autism) Irish Rail staff are trained to recognize visual cue cards such as the  JAM card , which inform the interlocutor of the holder’s condition. JAM cards are available online or at mainline train stations in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and Sligo.

Las Vegas Sphere: Ultimate guide to seats, prices and how to see Dead Forever in 2024

Competing for attention in Las Vegas with neon signs, billboards and mega-resorts that resemble European palaces and Egyptian pyramids is no easy feat.

But an eight-month-old orb with a talent for shapeshifting is stealing a little of their thunder.

Sphere at The Venetian Resort , an entertainment venue that opened September 2023 just off the Las Vegas Strip , has garnered much attention since its debut for its immersive audio-visual experiences.

See the 366-foot-tall venue from the outside at night and it captivates people for its ability to project images from its exterior shell (also called the Exosphere) containing 580,000 square feet of LED lights, whether it's the Earth, the surface of Mars, a blinking eye, or an emoji. It developed a reputation for causing traffic gridlock since the projections began last year during the Fourth of July.

Inside, the venue's 160,000-square-foot display with 16K by 16K resolution displays immersive visuals, backed by the world's largest beamforming audio system, according to The Venetian .

What is the Sphere in Las Vegas?

Described on its website as "a next-generation entertainment medium that is redefining the future of live entertainment," Sphere is an immersive venue that uses haptics (seats that can move and vibrate), atmospheric simulations and visual effects to "transport audiences to places real and imagined."

The Sphere Experience, the main attraction inside the Sphere, is a two-part attraction. The first part, guided by a humanoid robot called Aura, includes a 360-degree avatar capture and a 50-foot-high holographic installation.

The second part is a viewing of an immersive film called "Postcard From Earth" by director Darren Aronofsky on Sphere's largest, highest-definition screen. "Postcard From Earth" is described as part nature documentary, part science fiction movie.

Sphere has also hosted concerts, with U2 inaugurating it with a 40-show residency that launched on Sept. 29, 2023. Sporting events are coming as well: UFC President Dana White said in February that he booked Sphere for UFC 306, scheduled for Sept. 14, 2024.

Tripadvisor users gave Sphere more mixed reviews, with an overall rating of 3 out of 5 stars. Most of its bad reviews were critical of the message of the "Postcard From Earth" film in the Sphere Experience.

A one-star review from a Tripadvisor user named Kathryn W. expressed disappointment with the Sphere Experience's humanoid robots and how "a couple of robots that are comparable to (Amazon's virtual assistant) Alexa can't answer a question." Kathryn added that the moving seats "could be mistaken for someone kicking the back of your chair."
