16 Ways One Direction's Louis Tomlinson Amassed His $70 Million Net Worth

While the One Direction infection isn’t quite as contagious as it used to be, the members of the group have all been busy with their own projects. Louis Tomlinson just released his long-awaited album and fans are excited to see him on tour this year.

H arry Styles arguably has the most popular solo career out of the five band members, but they’ve all amassed an incredible net worth and have plenty of successes to brag about. Being a part of One Direction has set all of them up for life. Tomlinson himself is worth around $70 million.

Between being a member of an internationally acclaimed boy band, releasing a solo album, and appearing on multiple reality shows, he’s made quite a name for himself in recent years and his career shows no signs of slowing down. Here are 16 Ways One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson Amassed His $70 Million Net Worth.

16 One Direction Albums

Most people could guess that the majority of his fame and net worth comes from his time with One Direction. The band released five albums during their time together.

All of their records went platinum and generated a ton of revenue. It was what Tomlinson was able to launch his solo career off of.

15 His Solo Album “Walls”

Out of all the members of One Direction, Tomlinson was the last to release a solo album. Walls dropped in January of this year.

It was met with mixed reviews but loyal One Direction fans helped it climb to the Billboard 200 chart. He gets a large chunk of his net worth from those sales.

14 Touring With 1D

While One Direction albums alone generated a lot of profit, the tours amassed a lot of money for all of the members.

Their Where We Are tour grossed over $290 million and was the highest earning tour for that year. That’s just one of their many tours over their years as a band.

13 Judging On X Factor

After One Direction went on hiatus, Tomlinson focused on a few solo projects, including being a judge on X Factor, the show that originally gave he and his band-mates their start .

He mentored Dalton Harris on season 15 of the show in 2018. It has been reported he made $4 million from being a judge on the show.

12 His Record Label

Not many people are aware that Tomlinson actually created his own record label in 2015. It’s called Triple Strings Ltd .

It was something he had wanted to do for a long time. The company was created under Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment and he worked with One Direction’s legal adviser, Lawrence Engel.

11 Playing Football

While everyone knows Tomlinson is a successful and talented musical artist, he is also a pretty decent athlete. He’s played soccer for years.

In 2013, he was signed to the Doncaster Rovers . Not only that, but he actually owns the team , following the example of singer Elton John, who previously owned a soccer club.

10 His Collab With Steve Aoki

Back in 2016, Tomlinson recorded a song with DJ Steve Aoki. The catchy EDM hit is called “Just Hold On”.

It debuted at number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is still being played on the radio today. It’s one of Aoki’s most successful songs and was one of Tomlinson’s first projects away from One Direction

9 One Direction Merchandise

When One Direction was at their height, fans couldn’t get their hands on enough merch. There were t-shirts, buttons, and posters in every store.

Tomlinson received a large chunk of his net worth from the sale of this merchandise. In 2013, the band made $57.5 million just from merch sales.

8 His Single “Just Like You”

“Just Like You” was a single recorded by Tomlinson in 2017. It was the first single he released to promote his solo career.

The release of the song was a surprise to his fans. It didn't end up being included on his debut album Walls , but it’s one of his personal favorite songs.

7 His Songwriting Credits With 1D

Not many people are aware, but Tomlinson has the most writing credits out of all the members of One Direction. He co-wrote 37 of their tracks.

He earns more royalties from those songs than the other boys because of it. Liam also helped write a lot of their songs and earns extra money from them as well.

6 Participating In The 1D Documentary

On top of world tours and album sales, the One Direction boys filmed a documentary about the band. Tomlinson received money for his participation in the movie.

The documentary concert, called One Direction: This Is Us , opened at number one at the box office and made over $60 million in 2013.

5 Paid By Simon Cowell To Sign 1D To Syco Records

Reportedly, mentor Simon Cowell gave Tomlinson over $2 million to sign One Direction to his record label called Syco Records. The other boys received large payments as well.

The band was one of Cowell’s most successful acts. They had many years of success together before splitting ways to work on their solo careers.

4 His Single “Miss You”

Tomlinson released another single that didn’t make it onto his debut album everywhere, though it is a bonus track in certain countries. The song was called “ Miss You ”.

It was more pop-punk than some of his other songs, surprising fans. He performed it live on the reality show The X Factor.

3 His Collab With Bebe Rexha

One of Tomlinson’s most successful solo songs is his collaboration with singer Bebe Rexha. They have a duet called “ Back To You ” that added to Tomlinson’s net worth.

It charted in nine countries and it was the number one trending song in the UK. He was the last of all the One Direction members to have a song outside of the band chart at number one.

2 Guest Judging On America’s Got Talent

Apparently, Tomlinson likes to judge talent competitions. He was a judge on X Factor and a judge on America’s Got Talent at one point.

On America’s Got Talent, they had a panel of guest judges, including Tomlinson, Simon Cowell, Mel B, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel. He certainly got paid for his time on the show.

1 His Solo Tour

Tomlinson is preparing to go out on tour now that fans finally have heard his debut album, Walls.

It’s the first tour he’s done without his One Direction bandmates beside him. His world tour may not make as much as his band’s did, but it will certainly add to his net worth.

Louis Tomlinson on his solo career, album collaborators, One Direction and fair prices for fans

Louis Tomlinson on his solo career, album collaborators, One Direction and fair prices for fans

Louis Tomlinson is Music Week ’s cover star for our November issue - and he’s got plenty to say about his solo career ahead of album No.2.

You can get hold of the issue this week to read the wide-ranging interview with Louis Tomlinson, written by Charlotte Gunn.

Tomlinson is now an independent artist after 12 years in the major label system. Faith In The Future, released on November 11, marks a new deal with BMG , following a long spell with Syco (five One Direction albums and his debut solo release Walls). Tomlinson has 4.25 million monthly listeners on Spotify and the single Bigger Than Me is on 15m streams.

Tomlinson’s guitar-heavy second album has credits including Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, The 1975, Wolf Alice), Theo Hutchcraft (Hurts), Joe Cross (Courteeners), Dan Grech (The Killers, The Vaccines, Halsey), Nico Rebscher (Aurora, Alice Merton) and Rob Harvey (The Music, Kasabian).

Tomlinson wrapped his most recent tour – which included a stop at OVO Arena Wembley – in September. He’s also been championing some of his favourite acts - including The Vaccines, Hinds, Sun Room and Stone - at his own Away From Home Festival .

Ahead of the album release, Tomlinson has dropped a new single, Out Of My System, and confirmed UK and European dates for autumn 2023. The tour includes a stop at The O2 in London (November 17), as well as dates in Sheffield, Manchester, Glasgow, Brighton, Cardiff and Birmingham.

Here, in an exclusive preview of our Music Week cover story with Louis Tomlinson, we present some of the interview highlights…

Louis Tomlinson on his solo career “With hindsight, I always knew I wanted to do it. But the question was, could I? What would it sound like? It wasn’t as sudden as this, but in my brain it felt like I woke up one day and all of a sudden, the band had gone on a break. And it took me a long time to get over that idea. There was a petulance there, I wanted it the way I wanted it.”

Louis Tomlinson on the end of the Syco era “I think it probably made sense for both me and Syco to go opposite ways. I had my own frustrations, I’m sure they had their own frustrations with me to a degree. I wasn’t really the traditional Syco artist. So it was a bit of a no-brainer for me really, and I did feel relieved when I was out of that.”

Louis Tomlinson on his new label home at BMG “Everything BMG stands for is really important. The level of control, even the way that the deal is structured, everything makes you feel like you’re in control and they’re there to help. Yes, they offer opinions, but it’s not saying, ‘This is what the single or video should be.’ I needed that freedom because the last thing I want is to be sitting in my rocking chair when I’m in my seventies thinking I should have made my own decisions. They’ve really embraced me as an artist, all of my ideas and thoughts, which gives me loads of confidence and was what I needed.

Louis Tomlinson on mental health and music “In terms of One Direction, it’s often easy to stereotype these big evil managers or big evil label heads who demanded that we did this [or that]. It wasn’t really like that, I will say that everyone did their best by us, and I’m talking specifically about our mental health . However, being an artist is very individual and the pressures that you have day-to-day, no manager or record boss understands that. Until you experience it, you don’t understand it. Sometimes words are powerful, it can be a little throwaway phrase that comes from this suited label boss and you think about that for the next couple of months.”

louis tomlinson tour revenue

Louis Tomlinson on helping his fans “ In terms of what I think could be better, honestly, there’s too many fucking greedy fuckers.  As artists, we can all do a little bit more to help out, with things like ticket prices, merch prices, everything that we put any kind of price on… Those things are really important to me. I could have had a meet and greet for the seven months I’ve just been on tour, and it would have been amazing fucking money. But the bottom line is, whoever’s got the richest parents or the most money gets a better experience, and that’s not fucking fair.”

Louis Tomlinson on his album collaborators including Courteeners bassist/producer Joe Cross “I definitely had a clear idea of who I wanted to work with, what kind of songs I wanted to make and the direction I wanted to go in. And that meant missing out on any of the moments of treading water and trial and error. When I look down the list of people that have worked on the record, it makes me really proud and especially people like Joe who plays with the Courteeners. I’ve seen loads of Courteeners gigs. Like, that’s fucking dead cool that he’s associated with my record!”

Louis Tomlinson on One Direction “I suppose it’s only a break if we ever get back together! When we had the conversations, we never got any real clarity on what it was. And I can remember going into those meetings and saying, ‘You know, I understand – it’s not what I want – but all I would ask is just put a rough time on how long a break.’ And there was never really an answer. So I definitely came out of the band, crossing my fingers thinking, ‘Oh, maybe it’s only going to be like a year or two.’ That’s also why it took me a long time to get over it because I didn’t really know what it was. I think that’s probably stopped me from going into my solo career because I was still just thinking I wanted to be in that band.”

Show Review: Louis Tomlinson draws thousands to sold out Faith in the Future Tour stop

  • July 5, 2023

Louis Tomlinson is leveling up and he’s starting with a new album and a tour that sold out a stop at Arizona Financial Theatre on Monday. The singer was joined by a killer backing band, along with openers Andrew Cushin and The Snuts for a high-energy evening of rock ‘n’ roll.

Acoustic musician Andrew Cushin strolled onstage right on time to get everyone warmed up for the rest of the night. His affable British charm delighted the sea of mostly female fans and his compelling vocals held everyone spellbound. Made of self-deprecating humor and a slightly sheepish air, Cushin strummed his guitar to “Dream for a Moment”, “You’ll Be Free” and more before exiting to thunderous applause and countless new fans.

Fresh from their Las Vegas nightclub extravaganza, The Snuts shuffled onstage in the throes of vehicular issues that nearly derailed their Arizona appearance and perhaps a touch of a hangover. Regardless, the Scottish quartet gave the crowd a rollicking set that included “The Rodeo” and “Somebody Loves You”. They weren’t onstage long but they certainly made an impression on the excitable audience.

When Louis Tomlinson released Faith in the Future in late 2022, it marked a stronger era for the former One Directioner. That strength lent itself to larger scale stage production, a heavy rocking live band and an uncontainable love from millions of fans. The Arizona section of the fanbase showed up and showed out on Monday with their handmade signs and ear splitting screams every time Tomlinson so much as smiled. And really who could blame them when his grin lit up the entire theatre?

He admitted to feeling under the weather but still gave stellar performances of “Kill My Mind”, “Face the Music” (a favorite of ours from the new album) and the uplifting “We Made It”. Not one to forget his roots, Tomlinson also threw in covers of One Direction’s “Night Changes” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go”, putting his own spin on the massive hits.

Tomlinson’s voice was a standout in One Direction and getting to hear him sing solo puts that uniqueness front and center. He also tells his story in raw and honest lyrics, never forgetting where he came from and where he knows he belongs.

The unreleased fan favorite “Copy of a Copy of a Copy” had another spotlight moment on this tour, along with a cover of Arctic Monkeys’ “505” done to perfection. At this point, Tomlinson’s weariness was starting to show but the fans carried him as he pushed through to end the main set with “Out of My System”.

Flashing lights and loud guitars brought Tomlinson back to the stage for an encore and he jumped down to the barricade to be in the arms of his adoring fans. Those arms and hands got aggressive, however, and he returned to his microphone rumpled and with holes torn in yet another stage outfit- prompting Tomlinson’s biggest smile of the night. He has a clear love of performing and described being in front of thousands of people who have lifted him up from the One Direction days to now as healing and exhilarating.

That adoration and joy was mirrored for the entire show and Tomlinson exited the stage to thunderous applause and the knowledge that we’d all be back next time.

Why Louis Tomlinson’s post about commercial success in the music industry is something we can learn from

Kelly McFarland

Singer/ songwriter and member of One Direction Louis Tomlinson recently took to social media to get something off his chest. In a frank and unnervingly honest thought-provoking post, Louis spoke about what commercial success as an artist means to him.

I’ve been thinkng a lot more about what success means to me. I feel like I’ve ben mistranslating it for the last three years.”

He went on to explain his thoughts in more detail.

Someone recently said something very interesting about how so many people focus on the “end game” without enjoying the doing.

Louis found fame as part of the worldwide phenomenon that was One Direction. For five years the band dominated the charts not just in the UK but internationally. One Direction produced five hugely successful albums of which Louis wrote a staggering thirty-seven of the songs featured on them.

Having been formed on the TV Music talent show The X Factor the band didn’t have the most traditional starts when it comes to a career in the music industry. They became famous overnight thanks to social media. They went viral as footage of them on the show gained them fans all across the world.

The band had huge commercial success being played on radios worldwide. As Louis rightly says in his post the band’s music was pop. They released fun and catchy songs that their fans loved.

Everything I have ever known in my career is straight down the middle pop. All my aspirations and expectations are all shaped around my experiences, as much as I try and stay realistic I couldn’t help but crave a “hit” single.

An unflinching and honest statement, something that Louis is known for. His words are not dissimilar to what Harry Potter star Rupert Grint said at the world premiere for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2, the last movie in the blockbuster hit Harry Potter series. In front of millions watching, he said he was going to treasure this experience as he would never have it again at that level.

I’m never going to have this again. This is-, we are never going to have this again. So we are going to have to make the most of it. -Rupert Grint.

Louis has been chasing something he likely won’t find again, even when One Direction comes back from their extended hiatus. One Direction is a group that cannot be replicated, what Louis did as part of the group was magic. Louis is one of the most underrated singer and songwriters that the music industry has in its grasp. Louis knows who he is in the industry as part of One Direction. But what Louis appears to have been struggling with who is Louis Tomlinson, the solo artist?

Being big music fans we decided to ask some of the team here at CelebMix, just what they thought made an artist commercially successful? The general consensus was that commercial success in the music industry isn’t about radio play or chart positions, it’s about the artist connecting with their fanbase with their music and through interactions with them on a more personal level.

To me, its always been the impact. I love a lot of smaller bands, and if their music is able to hit people and support them or relate to them, then that’s the ultimate success. A great song isn’t how many ‘na na na’s Rhianna can fit in, it’s about how it leaves the listener feeling.- Niki Smith

An artist may not have number ones but if they have a fan base around them who connect with them and are there for them, they will always be successful even if it isn’t number one on the charts.-   Ellie Nicholas

For me, these days chart positions mean zero. It’s all about streaming numbers now and worldwide success based on views and streams. Tickets sales are also a much bigger indicator of success-   Laura Klonowski

Longevity in the industry and the ability to continuously develop and evolve as an artist. A number one single doesn’t automatically make you successful – in fact, the pressure to get a hit and then another and another is often an artist’s downfall. Sometimes artists become dependant on that number one and struggle to fulfil their full potential after that  For me, success is seeing an artist develop over time and continue to grow with their music whether they’ve been around three years or 30. Staying true to themselves and releasing the music they truly believe in means more to me than just releasing what they think will be the next big thing.- Katrina Rees

There are numerous artists over the years who while they may not hit the top of the charts with their music, have a solid fan base and are able to tour and continue to make music which fans love, show that longevity within the music industry isn’t all just down to chart positions. Daughtry, Lifehouse and Shane Filan are all examples of this. Whereas on the flip side of the coin you have artists that do get that elusive hit single and struggle to replicate it, some being labelled ‘one hit wonders’. Many of the artists go on to continue to release music, just never seeming to be replicate the chart position of that one hit. Dexy’s Midnight Runners – ‘Come On Eileen is a prime example of this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVxcwe7EcaY

We also asked a few people within the industry on what they thought commercial success means for an artist like Louis Tomlinson.

From my many years in the industry, I’ve seen far too many artists adapting their sound to fit the most popular style and to be suitable for charting but this always backfires. If an artist succeeds in a genre they hate, they’ll have to stick with it, eventually lacking any motivation to create music. When a musician loves the music they create, it shows in their live performance, their overall branding and is the reason they’ll succeed. – Maddy Raven, Co-founder and Head of Music Promotion at Burstimo

‘  In simple terms, commercial success is based on profit and hits are based on, nowadays, nothing less than Top 5 in the charts. However, one of the biggest trapdoors that face any recording artist is misunderstanding the difference between a hit record and having commercial success. Commercial success is generated by clear sales and profits, like any business. You go on tour, you play to your crowd and that tour needs to make a profit. If you sign to a major label and believe that having hits is the same as commercial success artists will soon discover that record labels look at profit and loss as much as they do talent. Over the years when working at major labels, myself and the team would be working hard to gain media attention only to be told 2 singles in that the band, the label believed, would never make a profit, so the plug was pulled! Matters have only been made worse in many ways by streaming, where an artist will look at the number of streams they have had rather than the amount each stream returns in revenue, hence why major labels make such enormous financial amounts across all their artists streaming, giving them record profits whilst the individual artist gets their royalty’s cheque that sometimes may not add up to much more than a family meal at McDonald’s!! The difference between success and hits is why so many artists are turning their backs on major labels and trusting themselves and their own teams to gain  success that they control financially as appose to hits that end up costing them money .’ – Pete Bassett – MD Quite Great PR & Marketing

Louis Tomlinson recently released one of the most talked about songs of the year, the video and lyrics of  Two of Us resonating with people on social media all over the world. The supporting music video for the track moved many to tears.

Louis may not be getting to the top of the charts with his music in the way he did as part of One Direction and in the music industry today that doesn’t matter.

Louis Tomlinson may have struggled to find who he was as an artist. But anyone who listens to his music can tell you, he is an artist who writes songs that are relatable, that people connect to and ultimately can help people overcome things they are going through.

He may not ever get that elusive “hit” he’s been craving like he did in the band, only time will tell. He has a rare and unique honesty in his writing that connects with his audience in a way which makes chart positions and  “commercial success” meaningless when you have the ability to use your talent to help others. Louis Tomlinson is a secret weapon that the industry needs to hold on to, as it seems artists like him are the future, and who everyone can learn from.

Thanks to Louis Tomlinson’s LIVE , we get to relive some of our best memories of the last few years. Those of course being the memories of Louis’s two world tours. Faith In The Future may have come out a year and a half ago, but honestly, we’re nowhere near ready to let it go. So we feel the need to spend the next few hundred words remembering all the best memories as we listen to the live versions of our favorite songs.

Faith In The Future Setlist

Mentally, we’re still dressed in our rockstar red and black, waiting for Louis to grace the stage. As most of the songs on the LIVE album are from the Faith In The Future setlist. Not all, though. LIVE features fourteen songs recorded in different cities. So if you saw Louis on either of his world tours , check the track list. You may have a professionally recorded song from your very own city.

Is this a perfect setlist, or is this a perfect setlist? All of our favorite songs from Faith In The Future and some old favorites from Walls. We could go on for hours just about all the incredible parts of Louis’s collection that upon hearing the studio version, didn’t believe could get any better, and were proven wrong. The ‘Holding On To Heartache’ bridge? The ‘Saturdays’ bridge? We apologize if this is just us ranting about Louis’s music. But we can’t help ourselves.

As original fans of Louis (with a blue bandana from the Where We Are tour to prove it), screaming ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go’ in the year 2023 wasn’t something we were prepared for. But it was something we needed. And speaking of songs that were blessings on this tour, the updated version of ‘Back To You’ shook us all. We may have lost waving our rainbow flags to ‘Only The Brave,’ but we won with this. Still, Louis was not about to let us forget about ‘Only The Brave.’ If you buy the CD, a recording of ‘Only The Brave’ from 2022 will bless your ears. And ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go’ is available only on vinyl. What we’re saying is you need to get out there and buy every version of this album.

Faith In The Future Tour

Now that we’ve said enough about the setlist , we have to take a moment to remember the rest of the tour. Do we all remember when the crowd exploded when Louis emerged from backstage wearing – get this – a tank top? And do we all still have the red confetti or streamers that shot out at the end? Were we all scrambling to take home just one piece?

We need to go back to talk about songs because we just can’t leave anything out. As if Faith In The Future wasn’t enough, Louis wasn’t about to leave us without a few bonus tracks. He released ‘High In California’ and ‘Change’ right before tour started and then we all got to celebrate the release together. ‘High In California’ was an important part of the setlist, and guess what? You can only hear the live version on vinyl. All the more reason to buy it now!

Louis Tomlinson “Faith In The Future World Tour 2023” North American Headlining Tour To Play Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre June 2, 2023

(DETROIT – November 10, 2022) – Today, Louis Tomlinson announced the North American Tour dates for his headlining world tour in addition to his recently announced UK and European Arena tour for 2023. The “Faith In The Future World Tour” tour will span across North America from May to July and include shows at the iconic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Forest Hills Stadium in New York City, Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and more before bringing the singer-songwriter to Europe from August to November next year. The tour makes a stop at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre on Friday, June 2, 2023 at 7 p.m.

Tickets (starting at $29.70 on the lawn) go on sale Friday, November 11 at 10 a.m. To purchase tickets in the Crest Ford pavilion, Ford Motor Company luxury seats and on the lawn, visit 313Presents.com , LiveNation.com and Ticketmaster.com .

Yesterday, Louis Tomlinson unveiled one final taste of his upcoming album with the release of  'Silver Tongues' - listen  here . 'Silver Tongues' is a rousing earworm, bursting at the seams with joyful nostalgic energy. Written with Joe Cross (Lana Del Ray, Courteeners) and Theo Hutchcraft from Hurts, the track is another bold step forward sonically for Louis.

"Silver Tongues’ is probably the song I'm most proud of on the record”, says Louis.

This Friday sees the release of Louis's long awaited second album 'Faith In The Future'. The title epitomizes Louis's optimistic worldview, producing a collection of songs designed for the live environment. After spending the first portion of his adult life working 100 miles per hour, Louis reveled in taking his time to make sure he got his sophomore album right. He's made Faith In The Future on his watch, and collaborators include Mike Crossey (The 1975, Wolf Alice), Rob Harvey, Dan Grech (The Killers, The Vaccines, Halsey), Nico Rebscher (Alice Merton) and the aforementioned Joe Cross and Theo Hutchcraft.

In celebration of the new album, Louis will perform “Silver Tongues” on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon tomorrow on NBC at 11:35pm ET/10:35pm CT. He will also celebrate album release with a special, one-night only, sold out show tomorrow night at New York City’s Irving Plaza.

Featuring both the anthemic first single 'Bigger Than Me' and indie punk fan favorite 'Out Of My System', the album begins in emphatic style with the pounding drums of 'The Greatest', which Tomlinson says is a celebration of the relationship has amassed with his avid fanbase. Other stand out tracks include indie floor-filler, 'Written All Over Your Face', blissful roof-down summer anthem, 'Lucky Again', tearjerkers 'Angels Fly' and 'Holding On To Heartache', alongside the retrospective 'Common People', a beautiful and poignant homage to his hometown Doncaster.

There's a delicate balance to 'Faith In The Future', with Louis exhibiting the full capability of his talents whilst never refraining from sounding unapologetically like him for a nanosecond. 'All This Time' sees Louis dip his toes back into dance music, whilst 'She Is Beauty We Are World Class' is a full-blown dance track perfect for an Iberian sunset, yet still feels genuine and honest.

'Walls' was an album Louis needed to get off his chest, but he now has uncompromisingly expanded his wings and evolved.

In 2021, Louis was listed in the Guinness Book Of World Records for breaking the record for the most livestreamed concert by a solo male artist. Louis hosted one of the biggest live stream concert events ever held, selling over 160,000 tickets to fans in over 110 countries and raising funds for several important charities and touring crew affected by the pandemic. Following the huge success of the festival's 2021 debut, August also saw the return of Louis’ highly successful The Away From Home Festival. The one-day event was staged this year at the stunning Marenostrum Fuengirola in Malaga Spain, hosting 18,000 fans and selling out in just 24hrs with a line-up of some of the best new British bands.

Live Nation Buys Veeps, Joel and Benji Madden’s Livestreaming Company

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

Concert promotion giant Live Nation has bought a majority stake in livestreaming platform Veeps, the company announced Tuesday. Live Nation, which has endured 10 months and counting without regular concerts or tours due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will now be directly positioned in the fast-growing livestreaming space.

For Live Nation, acquiring Veeps gives the promoter a new revenue stream; the concert company has struggled with dramatic revenue drops of 98% and 95% in the past two quarters as shows remain on pause. And there’s clear merit in the deal for Veeps too: As the livestreaming market gets saturated with dozens of companies, several of which launched during the pandemic, Veeps will receive the competitive technological and marketing resources of a much larger company in Live Nation, along with its major artist ties.

Neither Live Nation nor Veeps disclosed how much Live Nation paid or what percentage of the company it now owns.

“The idea of working together through this partnership was already kind of a natural and organic thing that was always happening. We’ve worked so closely and over the last decade or so with Live Nation in so many different ways,” Veeps co-founder Joel Madden, also a founding member of pop punk band Good Charlotte, tells  Rolling Stone.  “ Live Nation is genuinely interested in exploring how they approach livestreaming. And I think that they were open to a lot of things.”

Joel Madden founded Veeps in 2017 with twin brother and fellow Good Charlotte member Benji Madden — as well as co-founders Sherry Saeedi and Kyle Heller — as a service for VIP experiences at artists’ shows, with a livestreaming offering on the side. Since then, the company has doubled down on its livestream business and had a notable 2020, airing about 1,000 livestreams with ticket sales revenue exceeding $10 million, according to the company. Last year, Veeps aired shows for the likes of Brandi Carlile, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Patti Smith among many others.

“L ivestreaming is going to become a solid evergreen line in artists’ businesses, so we believe that every artist is going to have to decide what that is for them, what their livestreaming business is,” Madden says.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

He adds: “ The part we’re excited about is helping artists develop that aspect of their business. That will exist in and around when live shows come back. Not every show, but definitely it is something that artists will be considering when they go out on tour. Which shows do they want to stream or what special VIP events do they want to stream?  That’s all going to be creative conversations around artists’ touring businesses.”

Discussions for the acquisition started several months ago, Madden says .  Without naming specific companies, Madden says Veeps had conversations with groups in venture capital and tech, but Live Nation was the most natural fit given its music background. While Live Nation owns a majority of the company, Madden says he expects the companies to approach the deal more like a joint venture, and that he and Benji will remain the most hands-on in running the company.

“The message has been that they want us to be us,” Madden says. “ They love the message. They love what we stand for, they love our relationship with the artists in the space, I think, as they looked across the space — it’s a unique company and it truly is an artist-first company. Live Nation loves that and all the conversations we have are lead with that.”

Since the pandemic started, livestreaming has quickly changed its image from a once balked-at gimmick into a shining savior of the industry . Livestreaming will likely remain a crucial part of the live music experience in 2021 as much of the world remains in quarantine, with many estimates pointing to the fall to as late as early 2022 for a return to in-person shows.

Even when concerts come back, many agents and artists’ managers say that some form of livestreaming will likely stick as part of the live experience. With no limit on viewership, paid livestreams have the potential to be very lucrative, as shown through streams from BTS and Dua Lipa — but they are by no means a guaranteed success. Some virtual shows’ production costs have gotten very expensive, and as several booking agents have told Rolling Stone,  maximizing sales and viewership for streams is still a work in progress, particularly as fans have been overloaded with content.

Before the Veeps deal, Live Nation had only lightly experimented with livestreams in the pandemic era. It paired up with Tidal to produce digital shows for Megan the Stallion and Lil Uzi Vert, and it hosted livestreams for artists like Scarypoolparty and AWOLNATION, who’d both played livestream gigs from the Live Nation-owned Wiltern in Los Angeles. But Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino had been touting livestreaming’s potential in recent months as a possible add-on for its shows in the years ahead, noting the company would likely be livestreaming much more shows this year.

Madonna Sued Again for Late Concerts: 'A Consumer's Worst Nightmare'

Live nation and ticketmaster could soon face federal antitrust lawsuit.

“It’s a great compliment to the core business, there’s always going to be the Beyoncés, BTS’s, Billie Eilishes who can do the old school pay-per-view and can drive significant dollars,” Rapino said of livestreams during Live Nation’s quarterly conference call last November. “But generally this business is a compliment and promotion to the core concert. We think going into 2021 and 2022, we’ll be streaming a lot more of our concerts to fans that can’t show up to the event, or some that may want to stream on our app when they’re at the event because of some added value of digital backrooms or camera angles.”

In a statement regarding Live Nation’s acquisition on Tuesday, Rapino echoed those thoughts. “Looking to the future live streams will continue to unlock access for fans – whether they are tuning into a sold out show in their hometown, or watching their favorite artist play in a city halfway around the world,” Rapino said. “The most critical element of live streaming is the artist on stage, and with Live Nation’s unmatched inventory feeding into Veeps, together we will help fans enjoy more live music than ever before.”
