Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour Reviews
Deluxe 30-minute south rim tour.
- 25% larger cabin
- Stadium-style seating
- Industry leading climate control
- 180-degree wraparound windshield
- Incredible aerodynamics
- Latest tail rotor technology
Without getting technical, the advantages of a larger cabin translate into more personal space. Further, because of the extra space, the chopper is able to be outfitted with rows of forward-facing seats that ensure everyone gets an unobstructed view.
Why is climate control so important? Simple. The canyon - more specifically Grand Canyon National Park Airport, elevation 7,000 feet - gets hot in the summer and cold (as in "snow cold") in the winter. Believe me, you'll be thanking the engineers for this.
The full windshield compliments the theater-style seating configuration. Plus, at 180 degrees, you get great front and peripheral views. The heli's aerodynamics significantly increase flight stability and let the chopper cut through turbulence like butter. Lastly, the EcoStar's tail rotor drastically reduces noise - a big deal if you've ever ridden in other models of helicopters.
Points of Interest
The Majestic is a 30-minute flight that goes from the South Rim to the North Rim and back. En route, you'll see:
- Kaibab National Forest
- The North Rim
- Historic Grand Canyon Village
- The Colorado River
- Phantom Ranch
- The Tower of Ra
- The Dragoon Corridor (widest, deepest section of the canyon!)
It's amazing how much you'll see on the Majestic. By my estimation, it will take a traveler on the ground more than a week to see all that you've witnessed in 30 minutes. Or, to continue putting things in perspective, it takes 5.5 hours to drive from the South Rim to the North Rim. Now that's a big deal IMHO!
Please note that Papillon's Majestic is not available from Las Vegas, NV. The South Rim is out of flying range for Las Vegas-based helicopters (all of which service the West Rim of the canyon where choppers are permitted to fly below the rim and land on the bottom). That said, if you are based in Vegas, I recommend you consider this South Rim airplane/helicopter combo package.
The Majestic is a great trip to take if you are coming up from such Arizona cities like Phoenix, Scottsdale, Sedona and Flagstaff. I recommend driving yourself to the National Park, which from Phoenix, for example, is a 4-4 1/2 hour drive. The road is well maintained and directional signage is easy to understand. Here's a Google Maps link showing the route:
http://goo.gl/maps/LWXx4
Book It Today!
I recommend that you book the Majestic in as far advance as you can. Definitely avoid trying to make reservations within 48 hours of your desired departure date and time. This particular flight has become very popular and constantly sells out. I've heard of people getting same-day seats but it's rare and in some cases these folks had to fly on separate aircraft.
By making your reservations in advance, you achieve several things:
- Lower prices
- More selection
- Best flight times
I'll get to lower prices later in the article. Right now, I want to focus on best flight times, which is really important. The best time to fly is in the morning. Here's why:
- Better visibility
- Smoother air
The other great time to fly is toward the end of the day, especially during summer when forest fires and dust ironically come together and intensify sunsets over the gorge. However, all this talk about best time to fly is moot if you fail to book your trip in advance because the "prime time" flights I just identified are the first ones to sell out.
Everyone wants the lowest price and I don't blame them. I'm out there just like you getting them for friends, family and readers just like you. I could talk all day about this subject but the key thing to know at this juncture is to purchase your tour from a supplier like Papillon.
Bargain Hunting
I've met hundreds of people who have spent countless hours hunting down the best price on the Internet. They eventually come to me tired and frustrated. My advice is always the same: buy direct! I hope I've made my case. If I haven't, email me at [email protected] and I'll go into more detail. In addition, if you need assistance with a booking, call me at 1-702-530-8687 and I'll get it for you at no additional cost.
I hope you get a chance to visit the Grand Canyon, and that I've been informational enough to share with you the benefits of taking Papillon's Majestic Helicopter tour.

Tour Options to Experience the Majestic Grand Canyon
There are actually several options to tour Grand Canyon…
But first, to whet your appetite, this is what you will get to see when you visit Grand Canyon!
South Rim Tour of Grand Canyon
This was the tour we took, primarily because it is usually cheaper and the weather is usually better on this tour to Grand Canyon. This tour also allows you to make a stop at Hoover Dam to take some picturesque moments before moving on to see the majestic Grand Canyon!
The bus ride from Las Vegas was about 5 hours. Of course Kate slept along the way. I even got to snap pictures of her drooling!
Our first stop was at Hoover Dam.
The ride around the dam was amazing. It seemed as though you are transported into “Transformers” and imagine this futuristic structure (Hoover Dam does look futuristic doesnt it?) sitting right in the middle of a vast desert.
We also managed to grab a magnet at the souvenir shop there. Remember to take a picture with this Hoover Dam sign as well!
We were also told by our guide that Boulder City was actually built for the workers so that they could continue with the construction of Hoover Dam.
We made a stop over at the Grand Canyon visitor centre where visitors can watch an IMAX film of the Grand Canyon. We also had our chinese takeaway lunch here. Not bad for food out in the desert 🙂
Next was the Grand Canyon itself!
We were given 2 hours to walk ourselves. It was different. You get to find a spot, enjoy the vast range of the Grand Canyon and really just feel the tranquility. At times, you might even hear the call of the eagle!
West Rim – Sky Walk
The West Rim offers the world famous Sky Walk which is a horse shoe shaped platform allowing you to “hang over the cliff” of the Grand Canyon. With a transparent platform, you can have that feeling of walking over the Grand Canyon as well. We didnt choose this option because of the price and also mainly because Kate did not like the transparent floors. But Im sure visitors on this tour would have a great time as well. ______________________________________________________________
Other Options – Helicopter and Boat Ride
There are also other options to see Grand Canyon. The Helicopter ride offers you an aerial view and also descent into the valley whereby you can enjoy a boat ride on the famous Colorado River.
Of course, the helicopter ride, sky walk and boat ride will cost a little bit more.
However, whatever your choice may be, a visit to Grand Canyon will surely be one of your most memorable moments you’ll have.

Explore The West Rim With Hoover Dam And Skywalk
Grand Canyon is one of the natural seven wonders of the world for good reason. The majestic expanse attracts people from across the world, and the West Rim has a lot of spots for tourists to cover. The Skywalk offers travelers a chance to see the depths of the Canyon. This magnificent 10-foot wide, horseshoe-shaped glass bridge spans 70 feet out over the Grand Canyon's rim and provides a clear view down to the Canyon's floor, which is 4,000 feet away. Nothing compares to the rush of walking out onto glass at the height of thousands of feet, yet there's no need to worry because Skywalk is sturdy enough to support 70 fully loaded 747 passenger aircraft.

When the park was first established in 1919, 44,173 people visited it annually. The Grand Canyon as we know it today was formed by erosion caused by the Colorado River and geological action. Walk Through The Antelope Canyon
Antelope is the most snapped slot canyon in the southwest of the United States because of its wave-like structure, which gives the canyon a distinctive appearance. Summer is the most popular season for exploring the canyon since the weather is milder and there is less possibility of rain. Visitors from all over the world come to see its magnificent red and orange sandstone cliffs, which were eroded over many years by wind and water. Because of the canyon's unusual geometry, the sunlight reflects off its walls in fascinating patterns, producing a constantly shifting light display.

Celebrate Art At Seven Magic Mountains
A celebration of art and color , it rises more than 30 feet above the Nevada Desert and is constructed of seven enormous towers built of enormous colorful neon stones. The Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone claims that the Seven Magic Mountains reflect the blending of the man-made and the natural, as well as the passing traffic on the highway and the nearby mountains and lakes. The unique juxtaposition of the brown landscape with the bright and vibrant boulders is very interesting for tourists to observe and marvel over.
- Tour: Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, 7 Magic Mountains Small Group VIP Tour

Explore Bryce Canyon And Zion National Park
Bryce Canyon, which is celebrating an entire century of wonder, is most renowned for its hoodoos, which are artistically sculpted rock spires that erosion has left intact. The greatest places to see hoodoos are along our day hiking paths, which provide a close-up and personal view of these unusual rock formations. The Bryce Canyon Amphitheater region is where you'll find the majority of the gorgeous day hikes and trailheads. In contrast, the backcountry paths of Bryce Canyon provide woods and meadows, breathtaking vistas of far-off cliffs, and isolation, but fewer hoodoos. On the other hand, Zion's distinctive collection of flora and animals will amaze you as you take in the past's rich history and the present's exhilarating experiences.

'That is how you turn 60': Maynard James Keenan, Primus and Puscifer go hard in Phoenix
Maynard James Keenan was nearing the end of a freewheeling stop on his 60th birthday tour, Sessanta , basking in the afterglow of “Southbound Pachyderm” as performed by a sprawling collective of extremely talented musicians from A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus, when he told the crowd, “And that, mother (expletives), is how you turn 60.”
He was technically still 59 at that point. He turns 60 on Wednesday, April 17, when he returns to that same stage with those same friends at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix, just down the hill from his home in Jerome, Arizona .
But it’s doubtful many people have embraced the thought of turning 60 with a more inspired blend of self-effacing humor, undeniable vitality and unabashed artistry than Keenan.
Maynard James Keenan's Sessanta was as untraditional as promised
The night was every bit as untraditional as promised, played out on a two-tiered stage with sofas and three drum kits on the upper level and a chairlift to transport musicians from one level to another, not because they’re too old to climb the stairs but because it added to the entertainment value of the night.
And that goes double for the people playing ping-pong during “Bullet Train to Iowa” and Keenan and Carina Round of Puscifer squeezing a game of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots into Puscifer’s “The Remedy,” which features some of Keenan’s greatest lyrics (“Yes, we’re being condescending/ Yes, that means we’re talking down to you”).
The premise of this tour is that the members of A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus will not only share a stage but share musicians as the night unfolds, resulting in some truly awe-inspiring feats of musical cross-pollination.
Having multiple drummers definitely added layers of intensity to the proceedings. You never knew when Les Claypool of Primus would show up in another goofy mask to join one of the other bands on bass. And Keenan gamely guested on lead vocals on Primus’ “Tommy the Cat.”
It felt like crashing a really cool party at a rock star’s house and watching the musicians let their hair down, except for one thing. You could tell they put some thought and effort into making sure it sounded right.
It was all about musicianship and friendship and the magic of collaboration.
How Keenan's Sessanta played out on the eve of his 60th birthday
The concert began with a video of Keenan in a Spam commercial driving home the zero-camera policy by warning fans that if you chose to disobey this policy, you would be asked to leave, at which point you would find yourself fed through an oversized meat grinder outside the concert, thereby becoming the secret ingredient that makes Spam such a culinary favorite of “cannibalistic cultures.”
As threats go, it was pretty entertaining.
Each band took a turn in the spotlight, starting with A Perfect Circle, who followed Keenan’s PSA with a haunting rendition of “The Package.”
At the song’s conclusion, Keenan took a moment welcome the crowd to his birthday show with “Let’s confirm what we already know… Arizona.”
The audience cheered, but not enough to satisfy him.
“Sounds like California,” he scoffed, an insult met with boos. “Let’s fix it. Arizona!"
Maynard James Keenan's Sessanta setlist: What A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus played.
Maynard James Keenan weighs in on Arizona's return to 1864
That did the trick. Then, Keenan took a moment to address the local news.
“OK, so I’ve been out of town for about three weeks, out of state,” he said. “ Anything change that I should know about ? I dunno, like 1864 ? Jesus (expletive) Christ, people. Here’s my short speech, then I’ll (expletive) off. Register to (expletive) vote, please.”
Then it was back to the music with “Disillusioned.”
Each band did a three- to four-song set before rotating through the lineup two more times while changing up the order.
After bringing it all to a head with “Southbound Pachyderm” and telling the crowd this is how you turn 60, Keenan said, “I have been blessed with the privilege of working with some of the best musicians on the (expletive) planet… For my birthday, I got three new songs.”
And with that, the three bands dusted off the three songs featured on “Sessanta E.P.P.P”: A Perfect Circle’s “Kindred,” Puscifer’s “No Angel” and the Primus song “Pablo’s Hippies.”
Keenan closed his birthday celebration 'witnessing the majesty'
As the Primus song ended, Keenan joked, “Holy (expletive), you’re still here?”
Then, he brought the concert to a suitably majestic close with Puscifer’s “Grand Canyon,” singing “Witnessing the majesty.”
He’s referring, of course, to the majesty of the Grand Canyon. But it certainly applied to what we’d all just witnessed in the course of that performance.
Sessanta returns to Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre on Keenan’s birthday — Wednesday, April 17.
