19 small towns near Seattle you need to visit right now

Looking for a day trip destination?

There are so many things to see and do in Seattle , but sometimes you just need to get away. It's a good thing there are so many great small towns and getaways nestled within driving distance of the city. It makes planning a day trip, simple overnight, or weekend away pretty simple, with no need to book a plane ticket. (Although in some cases, hopping on a train might be part of the fun.)

Looking for some really, really good bread? Head to Edison. Want to be wowed by Victorian architecture? Definitely make a trip over to Port Townsend. Want to take a trip back in time? Try Scandinavian Poulsbo or Bavarian Leavenworth. Want some natural wonders or just a great view? Try Snoqualmie or Coupeville.

No matter where you choose to visit, these small towns all offer much to see, eat, and do.

Looking for a driving-free destination? Here’s a selection of small-town vacations to take car-free .

Need something by the water? We’ve rounded up a selection of beach towns near Seattle , too.

Towns are ordered west to east.

Sequim is known as the “ Lavender Capital of North America ,” so we hope you like lavender. If not, there's still lots to offer here.

The Dungeness crab is plentiful and you can explore for yourself on the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, home to over 250 species of animals. Keep an eye out for the Roosevelt elk who roam nearby.

Bonus: You can get there without a car , too.

Rows of purple shrubbery next to a lawn with a farmhouse and trees.

Those who have never strayed far from I-5 in this town might know it more for an outlet mall and the first Burgerville on the way to Portland, but don’t sell it short. The downtown historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is full of cute little shops. It also includes one of McMenamin’s adaptive reuse hotel projects, the Olympic Club , complete with a theater—so you can sleep in a cute little Gold Rush room after grabbing dinner at the pub and cuddling up for a movie. (It’s also supposed to be very haunted .)

Downtown Centralia is right on the Amtrak Cascades line, so no car required.

Short brick buildings from one to three stories line a paved arterial street.

Port Townsend

You can drive to Port Townsend in a day no problem, though you'll probably want to take the ferry—either from Whdibey Island to Port Townsend or from downtown Seattle to Bainbridge Island—for a more enjoyable trip.

The main drag is lined with historic buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Take a side trip up the hill and peruse some of the classic Victorian homes still standing.

If you've got time, consider catching a movie in the Rose Theatre's Starlight Room, complete with comfy couches and food service.

A three-story building with heavy, colorful Victorian ornamentation. A similar building and a gray building with a peaked roof are on either side.

Right in the middle of Whidbey Island, Coupeville is like two day trips in one. Because it's on the skinny neck of the island, the town itself touches both east and west coasts. The east drops you into a delightful main street with authentic Victorian buildings and Penn Cove mussels. The west takes you to Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, a beautiful green mixture of farmland and forest. We’ve detailed a perfect Whidbey Island day trip if you’re trying to see the whole island.

At night, a street is lined on either side with old two-story buildings. A sign in the foreground says “MARINERS COURT SHOPS.”

With many Scandinavian immigrants making up the early founders of the city, downtown Poulsbo has become a tourist attraction thanks to a Scandinavian theme that includes buildings and shop offerings. If you're gonna go to Poulsbo, you have to try the Poulsbo Bread at Sluys.

Located on Liberty Bay, many visitors love to travel by boat coming or going. There are three marinas to choose from if that’s an option available to you.

A seaside town, viewed from the water, includes a marina, small storefronts, and, up a hill past some trees, a white church with a steeple.

This waterfront village on the Swinomish Channel is a good place to visit in the summer or fall when you're looking for a walkable destination full of specialty shops, historic buildings and restaurants. It's a great place to visit in the spring since you'll have to make your way through the tulip fields to get there from the highway.

La Conner is also the home of author Tom Robbins , in case literary tourism is of interest to you.

Short, older buildings with peaked roofs along a narrow boardwalk facing water. There’s a large motorboat to the left.

Vashon is only a 20-minute ferry ride away from Seattle, so if you've never made it over, you might want to remedy that. Vashon offers a sweet downtown to walk through full of stores, shops, and restaurants.

In addition to the town of Vashon, you may want to explore the whole island—well, both islands, if you count Maury Island. You'll find a mix of old farms and new homes, not to mention some nice beaches.

Kayaks sit on a sandy beach. A long, narrow dock juts into the water from a stone bank above the beach. Many small boats are anchored in the water.

One word: Breadfarm. Okay, that's two words made into one word, but this isn't about semantics. It's about other-worldly bread (and graham crackers).

That's a good enough reason along to visit, but this old timber town has been remade by artists and artisans and is now stocked with places to eat and shop that make for a great respite between Bellingham and Seattle. There's even  a folk song about the town , because of course.

A wide stretch of river has the surrounding trees and grassy banks reflected in it.

Near the southern end of Whidbey Island, you'll find Langley tucked away in one of the corners. Once there, the quaint town is a loop of coffee shops, restaurants, shops, and art galleries. Some top picks include Useless Bay Coffee Company, the Braeburn for breakfast or lunch, or Prima Bistro for dinner.

Keep an eye out for passing whales by the Boy and Dog statue, and then ring the brass bell at Seawall Park if you see one. (Again: If you want to explore the rest of the island, too, we have a guide for that .)

In the foreground is a large bell attached to a wooden stand. There is a sign above the bell that reads Spy a whale, ring the bell.

Antiques fans, look no further: Snohomish is referred to as the "Antique Capital of the Northwest," and the entire Snohomish Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. So it's like an antique place full of antique shops full of antiques—mind-blowing.

A wide stretch of river has blue sky, clouds, and surrounding trees reflected in it. On the left bank, there’s a large, old red building, with more old buildings behind it.

Black Diamond

For those into the coal and railroad history of the region, Black Diamond is a great stop full of historic attractions, including an old railroad depot turned into a museum , a cemetery, a miners’ cabin from 1910 , and the 1896 Pagani House . The historic Old Town District includes shops and restaurants, including a beloved 109-year-old bakery .

A black-and-white photograph of an old house with a tall roof sloping down over a wide front porch.

Fun fact: The town was originally known as Tolt, but changed its name to Carnation to honor the Carnation Milk Products Company. But today’s Carnation is a great place to go even for the dairy-free; it’s a popular spot for berry-picking in the summer or pumpkin-picking in the fall, and fibercraft enthusiasts flock to Tolt Yarn and Wool. Seek out Camlann Medieval Village, a living history museum of a medieval English village, as well.

A wide, paved path covered in colorful autumn leaves, lined with rows of trees and a wooden railing on either side.

Snoqualmie’s Historic District is a nice area to spend the day; it’s full of shops, restaurants and the Northwest Railway Museum. People also flock to Snoqualmie to see Snoqualmie Falls, made famous for its inclusion in Twin Peaks —though it was still plenty famous on its own. For the record, the Salish Lodge & Spa is where you want to go if you want to stay in the Great Northern.

A cliff edge with a rainbow in Snoqualmie. At the edge of the cliff is a waterfall and trees. There are houses on the cliff and mountains in the distance.

Twin Peaks completists will want to take a trip here. Stop by Twede’s Cafe for a "damn good cup of coffee" and some cherry pie. Take your picture with the Giant Log from the opening credits. Try to find the spot in front of Mount Si from the opening as well.

You can also do non- Twin Peaks things here, like climb Mount Si or visit the Snoqualmie Valley Historical Museum.

A short, wide, white building with a long simple awning and parking in the front. A sign has a big red T on top with a blue oval that says “Twede’s” on top of a yellow-and-white striped sign that says “Cafe.”

Leavenworth

You might think Leavenworth is only for the winter wonderland experience, but it's much more of a year-round tourist destination.

This small town is nestled in the Cascade Mountains, and although it was once a logging town, it's been remade into a Bavarian village. Old world charm, German cuisine, and festivals like Maifest, and a wealth of adorable little shops mean there's always something to try here. It’s worth the trip alone for just the ubiquity of the Bavarian buildings; even banks, gas stations, and fast food joints have the architectural hallmarks.

Or you could just float the river, or head to the mountains for hiking and skiing.

A snowy road lined with Bavarian-style buildings decorated with string lights. There’s a snowy hill in the background.

While Cashmere is best-known of Washington State’s equally maligned and beloved state candy, Aplets and Cotlets, there’s plenty of quaint stuff to do here besides visit the candy factory . It’s also home to distilleries, wineries, and and cider mills, plus tiny bars and even a pioneer village and museum. It’s also along the Wenatchee River and close to both the Cascades and Lake Chelan for outdoor adventuring.

On a wide paved path, a single wood-and-metal bench faces a river. A dry-looking hill in the background has a small sprinkling of trees on it.

If you head to Leavenworth to feel like you're in old-world Germany, you head to Winthrop to feel like you're in the old West.

In the heart of Methow Valley, Winthrop offers up shops with Western storefronts and wood boardwalks, but it's also a great place to experience the outdoors. It has over 120 miles of cross-country skiing trails and access to everything the Cascades has to offer.

An Old West-style building faced head-on from across a paved road. At the center, a white storefront with two Craftsman-style peaks and a wide awning. On either side, street frontage is an old-time saloon shape with awnings.

In the Methow Valley east of Winthrop, Twisp has established itself as a kind of arts enclave, with nonprofit Methow Arts running point on events, education, and resources for more than three decades—and artist colony Twisp Works providing a kind of open-air arts, culture, and craft mall on repurposed ranger station land. It’s also the largest town in the valley, with a whopping 970 people .

A dome-shaped sculpture made of rusty, metal, rectangle tiles with holes through the center of each. At the bottom left, a metal shape has a feminine face etched in simple line art.

Soap Lake can get a little thirsty for tourism dollars—for example, the Soap Lake Lava Lamp roadside attraction—but those that have made the drive have report it’s worth it, and not just for the mineral mud with alleged healing powers . It’s one of the less expensive places to plan a spa getaway, for starters, but it’s also full of Russian and Ukrainian food and plenty of local color ( Kelly O called it “freaky magic” in the Stranger a few years back).

A narrow road runs through a plain of dry glass. A blue lake is surrounded by buttes in the distance, and trees on the side closest to the camera.

7 Fun Things to Do in Seattle Southside (near the Airport) with Tweens and Teens

By: Author Kim Tate

Posted on Published: November 3, 2021

Planning to visit the Seattle Southside region and looking for some fun activities to do with older kids? Whether you’re planning a local Seattle staycation or looking for things to do near Seattle airport, check out this list!

Seattle Southside is made up of the cities of Des Moines, SeaTac, and Tukwila, and you can reach downtown Seattle in about 15-20 minutes, while still staying close to the airport for traveling convenience.

Get Outside

One of the things locals love best about the Pacific Northwest (aka the PNW) is our beautiful nature. We have oceans, lakes, mountains, and lots of trees, so it’s no surprise that getting outside is one of our favorite activities. Two of the most popular spots to hang outside in Seattle Southside are Des Moines Beach Park (and Marina) and Redondo Beach.

At Des Moines Beach Park, you can explore the rocky shore, you might spot some shells and sea life in addition to a few shorebirds hoping to catch a bite to eat. If you’re a fan of fishing, you can even fish off the Public Fishing Pier while watching boats sail by and planes pass overhead.

des moines beach park public fishing pier

And for some extra exploration, you can hike along the Des Moines Creek Trail which is a paved easy walking trail through the middle of a lush forest. After your hike, stop at Quarterdeck to grab a drink and sit outside in the sunshine.

Redondo Beach is another popular outdoor spot in the area where you can find a small beach, boardwalk, and pier, and you can even rent kayaks or paddleboards and head out for a paddle.

If you’re searching for where to eat in Des Moines, try via Marina Wood Fired Pizza & Italian Cafe for a delicious Italian dinner and Jack’s Country Restaurant for a big plate, old-fashioned breakfast.

DEFY Trampoline Park

If you’re looking to burn off some energy and escape indoors, head to DEFY Seattle in Tukwila. It’s a huge indoor trampoline park but has more to offer than just bouncing. We took a shot at completing their ninja obstacle course, they even have a warped wall! And you can also ride a zipline into a foam pit and try your hand — or should I say foot — at slackline walking. Trust me, it’s harder than it looks!

This is the perfect place to escape on a rainy Seattle day. And, if you get hungry while visiting, they do have a small snack booth where you can grab some food.

Round 1 Entertainment

If you’re into bowling and arcades, Round 1 Entertainment is a must-stop for your Seattle Southside trip. It’s a large game complex at the Westfield Southcenter shopping mall. Inside families can go bowling, play pool, sing their hearts out with karaoke, and play for prizes in the large arcade.

We loved bowling at Round 1, they have fun-themed scoreboards and big-screen TVs at the end of each bowling lane. It’s a great atmosphere for groups and a perfect activity for families. And if your kids (and even yourself) have outgrown Chuck E Cheese, Round 1 will reawaken your love of arcade games as you play for tickets with basketball, bowling, and any number of random video games.

While at Southcenter, you can grab lunch or dinner at Old Spaghetti Factory, a popular family chain. If you have a small party, you might even request a table in their train car. And all meals come with ice cream at the end, sure to be hit with kids of any age!

Family Fun Center

If you’re looking for more family fun center activities, check out the Tukwila Family Fun Center. You can play some mini-golf, race go-karts, battle with bumper boats, take a swing in batting cages, and go for an attack with laser tag. They also recently added a large 16-lane bowling alley, so families can enjoy a day of fun with each other.

One tip: look online in advance for deals and specials. Depending on what activities you want to do, you might be able to get a wristband for activities and save some money.

iFLY Indoor Skydiving

If you’ve seen photos of people doing indoor skydiving, you have your chance to give it a try while in Seattle Southside. iFLY has a Seattle location in Tukwila near the Westfield Southcenter Mall. It’s a unique experience and can be quite challenging but fun! You’ll get suited up and get a lesson on what to do before heading into the chamber to give “air riding” a try.

ifly-seattle-southside

Be sure you budget for their professional photos and/or videos if you think you might be interested in having a memento of your flight.

Museum of Flight

One of our family’s favorite museums in the Seattle area is the Museum of Flight. If your family has any interest in aviation and old planes, this shouldn’t be missed. They have one huge room that is filled with old planes, including a plane just like the one Amelia Earhart flew. They also have a large exhibit of WWI and WWII planes, sure to be of interest for history buffs. They even have a space shuttle!

amelia earhart statue museum of flight

And I’ll mention that the museum has a pretty nice cafe where you can grab some food in case you visit during mealtime. They also have a 3D theater with various films about flight and space (currently closed for safety).

MaST Aquarium

If you’re interested in learning about the sea life that calls the Puget Sound home, you should head to the Highline College Marine Science and Technology Center. This aquarium and teaching center is located at Redondo Beach in Des Moines and serves as the learning center for Highline College students as well as a public learning center.

Their center features 15 tanks that use flow-through seawater straight from Puget Sound. You can view over 250 native marine species, and even have a chance to touch some! Take note that the aquarium is only open to the public on Saturdays.

Bonus: Visit IKEA!

I had to add this in since it’s a favorite stop for our family! IKEA is a popular furniture store that started in Sweden. My girls love shopping there and we’re always browsing their mocked-up rooms for decor and layout ideas. They also have a cafe featuring a popular Swedish meatball meal.

While downtown Seattle gets a lot of attention, hopefully, you can see from this list that there are some fun things to do in Seattle Southside with your tweens and teens. Again, you can head down for a day trip from Seattle or perhaps you’re just looking for something fun to do near the Seattle airport before or after your flight. Enjoy!

Soar to High-Flying Fun

Make your dreams a reality at I-Fly Indoor Skydiving if you've always dreamed of flying. 20 epic day trips from seattle you need to take in 2024.

north cascades diablo lake

The Space Needle, Pike Place Market, and the Museum of Pop Culture are some of the most popular tourist destinations in Seattle and most likely where someone will tell you to go when looking for something to do. However, while the city is fun, I highly recommend going out of it, as taking a day trip from Seattle lets you see just a small part of what else the state has to offer.

I’ve lived in Seattle for over 25 years, so I’m an expert when it comes to recommending Seattle day trips to go on. My friends are constantly messaging me to ask what they should do on their day off, and I have a hard time picking just one place to tell them about – I love Washington too much!

Many of my weekends consist of finding new destinations in Washington, so I’ve been able to take dozens of different Seattle day trips over the years. Whether I’m hiking in a national park or exploring a new small town, I’ve slowly been able to cross items off my Washington State bucket list .

While it was hard to make a list of only 20 places, these are some of the best Washington state day trips, in my opinion. Whether you’re a local looking for something new to do or visiting the city for a vacation, here are ideas to add to your list of the best day trips from Seattle.

This article was originally written in 2018 and last updated in 2024.

Coming from out of town? You’ll want to rent a car to be able to get around on your own. From Hertz to Alamo , we have a good variety available in Seattle.

20 Best Day Trips From Seattle

While these are nowhere near all the places to explore in the area, these are some of the best day trips in Washington State. Whether you’re a local seeking a new adventure or a tourist exploring the city, here are some fantastic ideas to consider adding to your list of the best day trips from Seattle based on my experience of having been to all of these places.

1. Mount Rainier National Park

mount rainier

Distance from Seattle: 86 miles

Travel time: 2 hours

Our first stop on this list of day trips from Seattle is Mount Rainier, the highest mountain in Washington State and in the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll see me here at least half a dozen times during the summer exploring new Mount Rainier hikes . I absolutely love getting up early and heading out to the park while the sun is just coming up.

You might also recognize this as the unofficial logo of Seattle, as it’s on everything from Seattle tourist gifts to our license plates and the most popular Washington National Park . There are so many beautiful roadside stops to make that don’t require hiking, and some of my favorites are Christine Falls, Narada Falls, and Reflection Lakes .

People love to take a day trip to Mount Rainier to explore the dozens of different hikes, find waterfalls , and spot wildlife. If you do the Skyline Loop hike, you’ll make it to Panorama Point , one of the best views in the park, where you’ll have an amazing view of the surrounding meadows, forests, and other mountains such as Mount St. Helens (did you know you can climb Mount St. Helens ?) and Mount Adams.

I’ll give you an insider tip – you’ll need to get here early in the morning if you come during the weekend in the summer, as it gets insanely crowded. Luckily, the park just made a new rule for 2024 that reservations are required and based on a time entrance, so this should cut down on some of the traffic.

While you can visit the mountain in one day, you can also turn this into a weekend getaway from Seattle if you want to spend more time hiking. I highly recommend this, as there are tons to explore on the mountain. There are also some amazing Washington fall hikes to go on here, with my favorites being Skyline Trail and Naches Peak Loop .

Afterward, stay at one of these gorgeous cabins near Mount Rainier for the night.

If you don’t want to drive, book a ticket on the Mt. Rainier Railroad for one of the more unique train day trips from Seattle. You’ll get a scenic view of the surrounding area while learning about history.

Prefer to go on a tour instead of driving yourself there? There are multiple tours from Seattle to Mt. Rainier available, including a small-group tour with breakfast and lunch provided or a Mt. Rainier and wine-tasting tour . The best part is that most of these day trips from downtown Seattle will pick you up right at your hotel if you’re visiting.

2. Whidbey Island

meerkerk gardens

Distance from Seattle : 35 miles

Travel time: 1 hour and 10 minutes

If you want to avoid one of those busy urban Seattle day trips, head to Whidbey Island for the day to take one of the more unique day trips from Seattle by ferry. This is only a short drive north of Seattle, and you’ll also find me here during every season exploring this beautiful island.

While it’s great to visit any time of the year, spring in Seattle is my favorite time to come here because it’s not crowded with tourists yet, and the colorful Meerkerk Gardens is in full bloom. I took my kids here for the first time this year and they loved getting their energy out on all the trails and doing the scavenger hunt you can get at the front check-in area.

Another area I love to go to is Coupeville , as they have an adorable waterfront town with tons of history. My favorite places to stop are Toby’s Tavern for fish and chips and a beer, Kapaws Iskreme for ice cream in the summer, and walking on the pier.

Make sure to check out the state parks here – both Fort Ebey and Fort Casey are to the west of Coupeville, where you’ll get to see lighthouses, hike through the forest, and check out old bunkers. I go to one of these forts almost every time I stop on the island.

Whidbey Island is also a great place to go shopping. There are boutiques, cafés, and galleries in the island’s coastal towns, including Oak Harbor, Coupeville, and Langley . Check out some of the best things to do on Whidbey Island when planning your trip. This is one of the best day trips from Seattle, in my opinion, so I recommend spending a day on this island soon.

3. Olympic National Park

olympic national park hiking

Distance from Seattle: 83 miles

Travel time: 2 hours and 25 minutes

Even though it will take about two and a half hours to reach Olympic National Park, it is still one of the most beautiful destinations in Washington State among this list of the best day trips from Seattle. It’s on the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest and is home to mountains, beaches, and even a rainforest.

When you spend one day in Olympic National Park , make sure to stop by Hurricane Ridge (an elevated destination for hiking and skiing), Lake Crescent (a mountain lake with trails and sites for camping), and Sol Duc Falls (my favorite waterfall here).

To be honest, there is so much to do at this park that you should really spend at least a few days here, but I know that doesn’t work with everyone’s schedule, so I’m here to tell you that a day trip is possible. I’ve done it a handful of times, and I just recommend leaving Seattle early to give yourself the most time to explore.

Also, keep in mind that if you visit during the winter, the daylight hours are much shorter, so you’ll want to wrap up any outdoor activities by 4 p.m. Check out my guide to an Olympic Peninsula road trip for ideas, which I highly recommend adding to a 4 day Seattle itinerary .

One of my favorite things to do here is all the hikes in Olym p ic National Park , ranging from easy hikes to multi-day backpacking trips.

Want someone else to drive on this long day trip from Seattle? Check out these guided tours:

  • Lake Crescent and Sol Duc tour to see the mountains, a lake, and a stunning waterfall
  • Hoh Rain Forest and Rialto Beach tour to see a rainforest and one of the best beaches

If you decide to extend your trip, you can spend the night at Olympic Lodge . This lodge is near the park and even has a pool if you want to relax at night.

4. Bainbridge Island

pegasus coffee bainbridge day trip

Distance from Seattle: 11 miles

Travel time: 1 hour

Taking a trip to Bainbridge Island is a close and easy day trip from Seattle that you can take, and there are so many things to do on Bainbridge Island . When I first moved to Seattle, my family would take this ferry across the water all the time, just for the day. The ferry ride alone is one of the main reasons people love coming here and one of the best Seattle summer activities to do.

Bainbridge has plenty of hikes near Seattle to explore if you take your car, (many of which are in the forest) so it’s ideal for rainy-day hikes in Seattle . There is also a small town to have lunch at if you want to walk across the ferry instead, and you’ll have multiple shops to visit nearby as well

Bainbridge Island also has the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art , an eco-friendly museum where rotating exhibitions by contemporary local artists can be seen. They also have a handful of wineries, which surprised me the first time I visited. My favorite is Bainbridge Vineyards , which has a covered outdoor area to enjoy even when it’s raining.

Some people just enjoy taking the ferry across and back without even getting off, which I also recommend on a sunny day (it’s one of the best ways to get around Seattle ). You never know what you’ll see on the water, such as seals or whales if you’re lucky (you can also book a Seattle whale-watching tour to guarantee that). Many people enjoy walking on the ferry and then taking it back during a day in Seattle .

5. North Cascades National Park

north cascades diablo lake

Distance from Seattle: 110 miles

Mountains of conifer trees, glacier peaks, and clear blue lakes – you can find all of these at the North Cascades National Park. This is one of the most beautiful US national parks , in my opinion, and one of the best road trips from Seattle .

It’s a great place to visit for those who are only looking for day trips from Seattle, but you can get more from this experience if you stay longer. Spending the weekend in Winthrop is a fun mini-vacation to plan, and you’ll find this Western-themed city at the end of the North Cascades Highway.

There are many places to stop on a North Cascades day trip from Seattle , such as Ladder Creek Falls, Gorge Overlook, and Washington Pass Overlook . I love these because they’re quick stops that give you beautiful views, and no hiking is required.

Make sure to stop at Diablo Lake on the way out – this is one of the most stunning parts of your one-day trip from Seattle because of its natural beauty. Located between Ross Lake and Forge Lake on the Skagit River, it is elevated at an astounding 1,201 feet above sea level. I didn’t think it was really as blue/green as I saw in pictures until the first time I visited, and now I see why this astonishing spot is the most popular place to stop.

In the mood for hiking? There are tons of hikes to do, which I’m slowly checking off my list. Make sure to check out my list of the best day hikes in North Cascades National Park .

Due to its proximity to Canada, it’s a popular weekend getaway from Vancouver . People come from all over to get pictures of this lake and go on hikes nearby.

The absolute best time of year to visit is during the famous larch hike season in Washington , which tends to be at the beginning of October. You’ll find me here the second I hear larches start to show, as they’re stunning ( Heather-Maple Loop is a great hike for larches).

I love using Roadtrippers for all my road trips because they show you all the fun stops to make along the way. You can get $5 off if you sign up with my code BTR5QTP .

6. San Juan Island

san juan island me

Travel time: 3 hours and 15 minutes

San Juan Island is one of the longest day trips from Seattle on this list, but it will be worth the travel. There are so many places to see and activities to do while you’re here.

Many people love coming to one of the most scenic day trips from Seattle by ferry in the summer. (If you’re visiting and spending 3 days in Seattle , I recommend extending your trip to visit the island.)

When you come on the ferry, you’ll be in the town of Friday Harbor . There are many cute boutique shops to visit and restaurants with a view of the water. You can also check out the hikes on San Juan Island to get some exercise during your visit.

Another popular activity is going whale watching at Lime Kiln Point State Park . This is perhaps one of the most popular activities among tourists and locals alike when looking for what to do on San Juan Island . It’s one of the few places where you might actually see whales standing on land.

This area is one of the most scenic places to go kayaking, so check out a San Juan Island kayaking tour if you have time. I love going out here in the calm waters, where you always see sea life of some sort.

Since this is one of the farthest Seattle day trips, you may decide to extend it into an overnight trip. Friday Harbor House is a chic hotel right on the water with a view of the ferry.

7. Snoqualmie Falls

snoqualmie falls

Distance from Seattle: 30 miles

Travel time: 35 minutes

If you only have a few hours and need ideas for easy day trips from Seattle, make sure to visit Snoqualmie Falls. One of the most popular waterfalls near Seattle , this 268-foot waterfall is located on the Snoqualmie River in the east of Seattle. It is a popular destination, with more than 1.5 million people visiting the waterfall every year, and one of the best free things to do in Seattle .

There is also an observation deck and a gift shop in the vicinity, so you can have a great view of the waterfall and buy some souvenirs to take home. You’ll love that this is one of the closest day trips near Seattle, and you can fit in other activities if you want. I personally recommend going to the observation deck at the top and then taking the 0.7-mile hike down to the river, where you’ll have a completely different viewpoint.

One of the most common tours here is the Snoqualmie Falls and wine-tasting tour , where you’ll get to visit two popular destinations in the Seattle area and see some of the best things to do in the PNW .

If you want to treat yourself and extend your stay, book a night at the beautiful Salish Lodge .

8. Leavenworth

weekend in leavenworth

Distance from Seattle: 125 miles

Travel time: 2 hours and 20 minutes

Visiting Leavenworth is one of the most popular day trips from Seattle for tourists and locals alike. The entire town center is modeled to look like a Bavarian village, which is reminiscent of an old German town (they even love to celebrate Oktoberfest here). No matter what time of year you come, you’ll love taking this Leavenworth day trip from Seattle.

The village is a popular tourist destination with all the fun things to do in Leavenworth . This is also one of the best day trips from Seattle in winter due to all the Leavenworth Christmas festivities . In fact, it is named A&E’s “Ultimate Holiday Town in the USA.” You can go shopping, eat German sausage, drink beer, and even play mini-golf.

I’ve been here in every season and I don’t know if I could pick my favorite one. Fall is beautiful with the foliage all over the town, and you can participate in the lively Oktoberfest festival. Winter is also stunning, as the town really has a European feel, with snow blanketing the village and holiday lights everywhere.

I always stop here for lunch on the way to eastern Washington, and I recommend Rhein Haus for German food or Blewett Brewing Company for pizza and beer.

Don’t want to drive? No problem – book a tour from Seattle to Leavenworth so you can relax.

things to do in tacoma point ruston

Distance from Seattle: 40 miles

Travel time: 40 minutes

For those looking for easy day trips from Seattle or a fun day trip from Portland , head south and take a short trip to Tacoma. It’s a waterfront town that’s known for the Museum of Glass , which exhibits the work of renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly.

There are tons of things to do in Tacoma to fill your day. Some places you can visit in Tacoma include the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, Point Defiance Park, and Point Ruston . Based on how many kid-friendly things there are to do, Tacoma is one of the best day trips from Seattle with kids.

During the summer, catching a Tacoma Rainiers baseball game is a great way to spend a sunny day. Tickets and concessions are cheap, and the game is entertaining no matter what age you are during one of the closest day trips around Seattle. I came here several years ago for my first game and loved how casual the stadium was while having a decent selection of food and beer.

10. La Conner

things to do in la conner

Distance from Seattle: 67 miles

Travel time: 1 hour, 15 minutes

Another great day trip near Seattle is the charming town of La Conner . I first came here years ago when I was going to college in Bellingham, and I have made it a goal to revisit every few years. My friend mentioned she hadn’t been before, so I took her up this year to see it again and found even more places to go.

When you first get into town, I recommend stopping at Beaver Tales Coffee for fuel for your day. After that, walk around the area as shops slowly start to open and head to the waterfront to see boats going along the river. Head down to the Rainbow Bridge at the edge of town to take an iconic picture below it and to be closer to the water.

For lunch, I love getting fish and chips at La Conner Waterfront Cafe or heading to La Conner Brewing Company for beer and appetizers. When you’re ready to shop, you’ll love all the lotions and other goods at Handmade La Conner .

11. Woodinville

woodinville winery me

Distance from Seattle: 20 miles

Travel time: 25 minutes

Popular with locals and tourists alike, Woodinville is an easy day trip from Seattle due to how close it is. You can choose how long to spend here, whether you want to visit for an afternoon or spend all day on this Seattle area day trip.

The most common thing to do in Woodinville is to go wine tasting at dozens of different wineries. In fact, they call it Woodinville Wine Country because of how large the area is. I’ve visited tons of wineries over the years and have never had a bad experience.

The most famous winery is Chateau Ste Michelle , and I recommend going here if it’s your first time in the area. They have a giant gift shop, cafe, multiple wine-tasting stations, and a spacious outdoor area to walk around during your one day trip from Seattle.

Other wineries I like in the area include Armstrong Family Winery, Covington Cellars, and Cave B Estate Winery. If you’d prefer to sample something besides wine on your day trip near Seattle, you also have your choice of breweries, distilleries, and cideries in the area.

For an amazing day out, book this Woodinville wine-tasting and Snoqualmie Falls tour !

12. Mount St. Helens National Park

day trips from seattle mt st helens

Distance from Seattle: 185 miles

Mount St. Helens National Park attracts more than half a million visitors every year who want to go volcano-watching. Most people can’t believe they can get so close to a volcano that still has steam coming out of it (one of our many Seattle facts to impress people with).

There are other activities that you can do when you visit one of the most fun day trips from Seattle, such as hiking easy to difficult trails. It’s also a popular Portland weekend trip due to its location further south in the state. However, you should note that access to most of the mountain is largely closed in the winter.

I recommend stopping at Johnston Ridge Observatory to learn more about the mountain’s past and present and have a stunning look into the crater. You can also summit the volcano (with a permit), see wildlife like elk, fish at Coldwater Lake , explore caves, and ride horses at Eco Park . Mount St. Helens National Park is perfect for those seeking adventurous Seattle day trips, and is also a popular Pacific Northwest road trip stop .

13. Bellingham

seattle day trip bellingham

Distance from Seattle: 90 miles

Travel time: 1 hour and 30 minutes

Bellingham is a coastal town near the Canadian border with plenty to do outdoors. I used to live in Bellingham during college, so in my opinion, this is one of the best day trips from there, especially if you want to be in a beautiful setting.

The area is also a very kid-friendly PNW destination if your family is with you. There are plenty of parks to visit and family-friendly breweries to stop at for a meal as well.

Here, you’ll find Mount Baker, Whatcom Falls, Lummi Island, Chuckanut Mountains, and Lake Padden. You should also visit the SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention and the Whatcom Museum while you’re in Bellingham.

Make sure to stop by one of the local restaurants downtown for lunch or dinner (I recommend Boundary Bay Brewery ). They have over 20 different small breweries to choose from, which I love about the town. One of my favorites is Otherlands , which serves Eastern European food and beer.

14. Boeing Everett Factory

Boeing Factory

Located just thirty minutes from the city, the Boeing Everett Factory will fit your day trip around Seattle itinerary well. Those who love all things airplanes will love this (I even enjoyed it, and I’m not the biggest aviation fan).

I’ve brought multiple friends from out of town here and they find it fascinating to go inside the factory and see what it’s like to build a plane. The only caveat is you can’t bring your phone inside the factory (hence my picture from the outdoor viewing area).

This airplane assembly building is the largest building in the world in terms of volume and area. Here, you can see large aircraft (like the Boeing 747, 767, 777, and 787) being assembled. This tour is best saved for when you need ideas for cozy day trips from Seattle in winter .

You’ll need to sign up for your Boeing tour in advance, so buy your tickets online .

Either way, you’ll love this when you need ideas for easy day trips from Seattle. Stop by the nearby town of Mukilteo afterward to get lunch or dinner at Ivar’s Seafood Bar (one of my favorite recommendations on the list of what to eat in Seattle ).

15. Edmonds

edmonds beach me

Distance from Seattle: 17 miles

Travel time: 30 minutes

Edmonds is often a stopping point for people taking the ferry to Kingston to visit the Olympic Peninsula, but it’s by far one of my favorite cities in the state, so it’s worth spending the day here. Head to North Brackett’s Landing to walk out on a sandy beach, see the ferry going across the water, and grab a latte at Waterfront Coffee .

Once the shops open a little later in the morning, you’ll have plenty of options. Anchor Chic, Crow, and Rogue are my favorites for women’s clothing and accessories. If you have kids, you must stop at Little Bipsy , which has almost a cult-like following at this point with their adorable kids’ clothing (my boys get a matching sweatsuit from them each year).

It’s impossible to tell you all my favorite places to eat or drink, but a few are:

  • MARKET for the best seafood and lobster rolls around
  • Demetris for shareable appetizers and waterfront views
  • Vie & Vin for a huge selection of wine (both tastings and bottles for purchase are available)

visiting yakima vineyard

Distance from Seattle: 142 miles

Travel time: 2 hours and 10 minutes

Yakima is one of the best Seattle day trips that locals go on when they want warm weather for a day. Located on the other side of the Cascade Mountains, the weather tends to be sunny and hot consistently during the summer.

There are dozens of wineries here if you want to taste some of the best wine in the state (check out Treveri Cellars ). They also have a good number of breweries in Washington for sampling beer, and more breweries continue to open up each year.

You won’t want to miss some of the more unique food here, such as tamales that often sell out. Be sure to stop at the Sunday Farmer’s Market as well to stock up before you head back home.

There are also numerous hikes to go on that you’ll want to check out, such as Cowiche Canyon and Tieton Nature Trail (my personal favorites).

17. Victoria, BC

victoria with kids butchart gardens

Distance from Seattle: n/a (ferry ride)

Travel time: 2 hours and 45 minutes

Did you know you can easily visit Canada in a day, and the best part is you don’t have to drive there?  Victoria Clipper  lets you take a day trip from Seattle to Victoria in less than three hours, and you’ll arrive in Canada just before 11 am.

That means you’ll have almost five hours to explore the very walkable city of Victoria during one of the best day trips from Seattle.

While it makes for a long day, this is one of the most entertaining day trips from Seattle with kids. They’ll love looking for whales and other sea life during the ferry ride, and there are plenty of activities to do in Victoria with kids once you get there.

I’ve been to this city about a dozen times at this point, and the places I always recommend are the  Royal BC Museum, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Butchart Gardens . For a meal before your trip back, stop at  The Flying Otter Grill.

Book your Victoria Clipper ticket in advance to get the day you want, as it’s a popular activity!

18. Chuckanut Drive

oyster dome hike

Distance from Seattle: 75 miles

Travel time: 1 hour and 11 minutes

One of the most scenic drives and best Seattle day trips is Chuckanut Drive up by Bellingham. I went to college at the nearby Western Washington University, and I can’t tell you how many weekends I came here to be in awe of the beautiful sights.

There are many pullouts where you can safely get off the road and take pictures of the San Juan Islands and Canada. If you’re a hiker, you’ll love doing some of the trails up here, such as Oyster Dome .

Hiking in the summer is the best time to come here, which is why it makes one of the best day trips from Seattle in the summer.

A few restaurants are located on the drive, but they’re not always open. I recommend driving down to La Conner after your drive to check out this cute town on the water. There are so many fun things to do in La Conner that you won’t want to miss.

You can stop by the family-friendly La Conner Pub & Eatery for lunch or dinner to fill up after your exploration. After that, head down to Pioneer Park and take a walk across the Rainbow Bridge.

19. Gig Harbor

weekend trip from seattle gig harbor

Distance from Seattle: 38 miles

Travel time: 45 minutes

One of the most romantic day trips in Washington State is Gig Harbor , which is only a short drive south of the city. You’ll love walking around this small Washington town , exploring boutique shops, and talking to locals, and it’s one of the best short day trips from Seattle.

One of my favorite things to do is grab a coffee to go and walk around the water. You’ll see small boats, yachts, kayaks, and more out on the water. You can also rent a kayak for an hour or two if you want to get some exercise.

I recommend taking a boat tour so you can see everything the area has to offer while learning about the history of Gig Harbor. There are several companies to choose from, and I suggest booking a morning tour while the water is calm.

Book your Gig Harbor boat tour online.

20. Snoqualmie Pass

snow lake dog

Distance from Seattle: 54 miles

I love going to Snoqualmie Pass for a day trip from Seattle because there’s something to do no matter what season you go in. Many people associate it only with the winter when you can visit The Summit at Snoqualmie Pass , which has four different areas with tons of runs that cater to beginners up to advanced skiers who want to go in the backcountry. You’ll find me here every season, slowly trying to improve my skiing skills.

However, there’s a ton to do when the snow melts as well. One of my favorite hikes is Snow Lake , which you can access from the Alpental parking lot. Gold Creek Pond is also another good one if you’re looking for a shorter, kid-friendly hike.

What to Bring on a Seattle Day Trip

hiking naches peak me

Here are a few items I recommend bringing on a day trip in Washington for drives near Seattle .

  • Raincoat – It doesn’t rain as much in Seattle as people think, but there is the occasional summer storm. Bringing a lightweight raincoat is smart and easy enough to put in your backpack. Amazon | Backcountry.com
  • Sunglasses – Contrary to what you may think, it can get very sunny during the summer months, so keep your eyes protected when you’re outside with these glasses. Amazon | Ray-Ban
  • Water bottle – Water stations to fill up your water bottle are everywhere in Seattle, so stay hydrated with a refillable water bottle. Amazon | Backcountry
  • Backpack – Most of these day trips are pretty active, so it’s helpful to have a small backpack to store your items in while you explore. Ama zon | Zappos
  • Comfortable flats – This is one of the most underestimated items to pack, but you’ll be sorry if you walk around all day with sore feet. I swear by Rothy’s because they’re cute, comfortable, and machine-washable. The red o nes are my favorite, as they give a pop of color to your outfit.

Where to Stay After a Day Trip From Seattle

If you’re spending the day out, you’ll want a comfortable hotel to relax in when you get back. Here are a few Seattle hotel recommendations:.

  • Inn at the Market – If you want to be right in the center of the action at Pike Place Market, you’ll want to stay here. You’ll have a beautiful view of Puget Sound and be able to head down to the Market in the morning to buy fresh fruit and croissants (rates start at $220 per night on Hotels.com or Booking.com ) .
  • Mayflower Park Hotel – Built in the early 1920s, this hotel has a European feel to it while still providing modern amenities. They have a fitness center if you want to get in an early morning workout and a restaurant and bar so you don’t have to go out if you’re tired from your day trip (rates start at $149 per night on Hotels.com or Booking.com ).
  • Mediterranean Inn – If you want to stay outside the busy part of this city, you’ll enjoy being at this hotel in the Queen Anne neighborhood. You’ll still be around plenty of stores, coffee shops, and restaurants for when you want to go out (rates start at $89 per night on Hotels.com or Booking.com ).

For a very Pacific Northwest feel, check out some of the best Washington Airbnb cabins you can rent. Here are a few other options in the Seattle area:

  • Quiet Condo in Seattle Center – This modern Belltown condo has free parking, a pool and is within walking distance of many Seattle attractions (rates start at $155 per night)
  • Beautiful Queen Anne Guesthouse – This two-bedroom guesthouse offers stunning views of Elliot Bay and has a deck to enjoy. (rates start at $215 per night)

Hopefully, you’re feeling inspired to get out of the city and take one of these amazing day trips from Seattle after reading this list! I know I enjoy exploring the state, and I know you will too.

We are flying to Seattle in March for 8 days. The original plan was to spend 3-4 days in Vancouver. However with Covid travel restrictions we are rethinking that idea. Any ideas where else we can travel (by car) that’s up to 8 hrs away for a few days outside of Seattle? Don’t know the area. Coming from fl.

Hi Tammy, I actually have a whole post on ideas for a few days out of Seattle: https://postcardstoseattle.com/weekend-trips-from-seattle/

Hi Marissa, Thanks for this very interesting blog. I might be coming to Seattle in mid January for a business trip to Boeing Everett factory. I’m coming from France so I’m looking at extending my stay in the Seattle area for some more days. I’m expecting the weather to be rainy and cold… so I don’t know what to do and where to go in such weather conditions. Do you have some suggestion for me?

Hi Vincent, yes, I have a whole article dedicated to what to do during the winter! Enjoy your trip. https://postcardstoseattle.com/seattle-winter/

Thank you so much for the wonderful details! We had great trip covering Bellingham – Whatcom falls, Lunch at Bellingham downtown, SPARK Electrical Museum to catch the 230pm Weekend show, Larabee state park via Chuckanut drive, back to Seattle. One could stopover at the Seattle Premium outlet mall on the way to round it out 🙂

I’m so glad to hear that! As a WWU alumni, I love Bellingham.

Seattle-Tacoma Airport 101: The ultimate guide to SEA

Benét J. Wilson

Located between Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is the 10th-busiest airport in the U.S., according to Airports Council International-North America. Airport data shows that it served more than 36 million passengers in 2021.

As of 2022, 31 airlines operate at SEA, serving 91 domestic and 28 international destinations nonstop. Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines are the top carriers for both domestic and international passengers. Other carriers at the airport include Air Canada, Air France, Air Tahiti Nui, American Airlines, ANA, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Icelandair, JetBlue Airways, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines (starting at the end of May), United Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.

SEA is made up of a main terminal and concourses N and S, which are all connected by the SEA Underground train system. From there, travelers have access to buses, a light rail system, ride-hailing services, taxis, shuttle vans and chauffeur services.

The modernization of Concourse N was completed in November 2021 and includes new amenities, more dining and retail options, a diverse art collection and a brand-new performance stage, all housed in a bigger, brighter and bolder space.

In March 2022, the airport unveiled plans to expand the C gates area. This part of the main terminal will be transformed with the addition of four floors above the existing building, which will add 145,530 square feet of dining and retail space plus amenities like an interfaith prayer and meditation room, a nursing suite and an Alaska Airlines lounge measuring more than 20,000 square feet. At the center of the redesigned space will be The Grand Stairs at C, which will offer seating and runway views, among other highlights.

Getting there

The airport is located around 14 miles south of downtown Seattle and about 25 miles northeast of Tacoma. Several public transportation options to and from the airport are available, including public buses and Seattle's light rail system.

places to visit near seattle airport

Two bus operators have routes that make stops at the airport: King County Metro and Sound Transit.

The airport's King County Metro bus stops, which are accessible via a walkway through the parking garage's fourth floor, are located at the intersection of Washington state Route 99 (or International Boulevard, as noted by the metro) and South 176th Street by the Link light rail system's SeaTac/Airport Station. You can get to them by taking the A Line of the metro's RapidRide bus, Route 156 or Route 161.

Sound Transit also operates two express bus routes. ST Route 560 is ideal for those coming from areas east of Seattle, including places like Bellevue, while ST Route 574 is best suited for those traveling from locales farther south, such as Tacoma and Federal Way. Both routes will pick you up and drop you off at the main terminal's south end.

Transit time: Long (depending on traffic).

Link light rail

SeaTac/Airport Station, the airport stop on Seattle's Link light rail system, is reachable from the fourth floor of the parking garage and via a walkway from International Boulevard. The light rail's 1 Line extends from Angle Lake to Northgate and includes stops in several South Seattle neighborhoods, in central Seattle areas like the Stadium District and the Chinatown-International District, by the University of Washington and more in addition to the airport. It is operated by Sound Transit.

Transit time: Medium.

Shuttle vans

Premier Airport Shuttle provides van service between the airport and hotels, homes and businesses throughout the Greater Puget Sound area, including Seattle, Tacoma and Bellevue. Standard reservations are for shared vehicles, but for an extra fee, you can also reserve a private van. The shuttle will drop you off or pick you up on the third floor of the airport's parking garage.

Transit time: Long.

Ride-hailing services

Three ride-hailing services can take you to and from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport: Uber, Lyft and Wingz. For drop-offs, your driver will typically take you to the departures area of the terminal, though you may be taken to the arrivals section if there's a lot of traffic. If you're leaving the airport, most cars will pick you up on the third floor of the parking garage.

Transit time: Medium (depending on traffic).

Flat-rate and metered taxis can be used to get to and from the airport. To catch a cab at the airport, head to the north or south curb of the parking garage's third floor. Metered cabs are one color and have a three-digit vehicle number, while flat-rate taxis are two colors and have a four-digit vehicle number. The latter charges passengers one set price based on zip code.

Chauffeur services

You can arrange limousines, black car services and more for airport rides. Some reputable companies include Execucar, Blacklane, 5 Star Luxury Transportation and Signature Limousine Service. Additionally, there are Lyft Lux and Uber Premium, upgraded rides from ride-hailing companies that are similar to those offered by executive car services.

Transit time: Short.

Cost: $$$$.

Other options

If you're renting a car, you'll need to visit the airport's separate rental car facility. Complimentary shuttles travel between the rental car center and the airport, with two airport stops available (one at the north end by Alaska Airlines and another at the south end close to the international carriers). The shuttle ride takes about five minutes.

If you live in the Seattle area, chances are you fly in and out of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport several times a year. But Sea-Tac, the airport's nickname, is also a major hub for West Coast and international travel, resulting in layovers for many connecting flights.

The good news is, whether you're a local or a visitor passing through en route to your final destination, there are plenty of amenities to keep you occupied. From perusing artwork and sampling local fare to shopping at high-end boutiques and indulging in a relaxing chair massage, your layover at Sea-Tac can be almost as much of a vacation experience as the vacation itself. And if you're looking to park near the airport, never fear — there are all kinds of conveniently located parking lots nearby.

Enjoy a Delicious Meal

Seattle Tacoma International Airport

While you can expect to find familiar airport spots like McDonald's, QDOBA, and plenty of Starbucks outposts, Seattle-Tacoma's dining options include everything from African and American food at Africa Lounge to tasty Vietnamese classics at Bambuza Vietnam Kitchen & Bar.

Other popular options include foodie favorite Capitol Hill Food Hall and Seattle staple Beecher's Handmade Cheese. Head to Hachi-ko or Koi Shi Sushi Bistro if you're craving Japanese food, La Pisa Cafe for Italian, LouLou Market and Bar for French-inspired Pacific Northwestern cuisine, and Poke to the Max if you're in the mood for the Hawaiian specialty. Burger lovers should try the Rel'Lish Burger Lounge, while beer enthusiasts can sip some suds at Tap and Pour, Trail Head BBQ Bar, or Ballard Brew Hall. Wine fans, meanwhile can raise a glass at Le Grand Comptoir or the Vyne Washington Tasting Room.

Hang Out in Central Terminal

Atlantide Phototravel / Getty Images

Sea-Tac Airport’s Central Terminal received major upgrades in the mid-2000s, adding to both the airport's aesthetic and comfort appeal. The layout is open and bright, with a wall of windows along one side, making it a great place to watch the planes take off and land, especially for kids.

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal if you need to get some work done or research your final destination. If you just want to unplug and relax, pull up a rocking chair alongside the wall of windows and sneak in a quick nap.

Get Some Retail Therapy

halbergman / Getty Images

The upgrade to Sea-Tac's Central Terminal also made it a great place to shop . Unique standalone stores are interspersed among typical airport bookshops and duty-free venues.

Fireworks, situated in the main terminal, offers artistic jewelry, gifts, decor, and other novelties, many of which are made by local artists. Outdoorsmen and women will love Ex Officio as a one-stop-shop for travel clothing and accessories. Other airport shops include a high-end MAC makeup boutique, Planewear, which houses everything aviation, and Sub Pop, named after its corresponding Seattle-based record label.

Admire the Artwork

Dana Neely/Getty Images

Art lovers will enjoy Central Terminal's huge hanging mobile, created by artists Ralph Helmick and Stuart Schechter. Look closely and you’ll see that each element of the mobile is a tiny figure of its own—step away from the ceiling's decoration to reveal a bird landing on the water.

While glass, sculptures, photography, and paintings line almost every terminal, Concourse B has some of the coolest artwork of all and it's right below your feet. Within the terminal's floor are bronze fish embedded in terrazzo, created by artists Judith Caldwell and Daniel Caldwell. Many people rush past this site without giving it a second look, so pay attention to your surroundings and take it all in.

Get to Know Seattle

TripSavvy / Kristin Kendle

If you're just passing through and won't get a chance to experience downtown Seattle, Sea-Tac actually offers a sampling of the city's best local businesses so you won't miss out.

Beecher’s Handmade Cheese , makers of flagship cheeses that contain locally-sourced ingredients, has a sandwich shop in Concourse C. If you haven’t sampled Beecher’s cheeses in its Seattle or New York City shops, a two-hour layover makes this the perfect time to do so. Alki Bakery in Central Terminal offers a host of local wines, while the airport's Made in Washington store sells locally-made artisan gifts alongside Pacific Northwest smoked salmon and other specialty food items. And, of course, around every corner sits a Starbucks or a Seattle’s Best coffee joint.

Take a Walk

bywriter / Getty Images

Sure, some people walk the mall for exercise, but when you find yourself with a long layover, strolling around the airport can be even better. All the terminals at Sea-Tac are connected, and if you get there early before the crowds, terminal exploring is a great way to sneak in some exercise.

Concourses A, B, C, and D all branch off Central Terminal, while the South and North Satellites connect via a short underground train ride. Get the feel for the old airport in Concourse B, an area with fewer restaurants, then compare it to the newer amenities offered in Concourses A and C.

Get a Massage

In typical Seattle style, massage chairs are stationed throughout the airport, ready to give you a quick dose of relaxation. If you're looking for something a little more personal, Massage Bar, located in the North Satellite, provides seated massages, using petrissage, compression, and deep tissue techniques. The spa also provides heat therapy treatments that incorporate warm flax-seed wraps placed on the neck and shoulders to relax tired muscles. And if you're in a hurry, order a quick foot massage instead.

Catch a Live Concert

Live music at an airport? Only in Seattle. With live performances scheduled seven days a week throughout the terminal, Sea-Tac has a way of treating passengers right. Check the schedule to see what time and in what location local acts are playing, then wander on by before you board your plane.

Relax in the Lounge

Delta News Hub / Flickr / CC BY 2.0

Frequent flyers can always spend time in their favorite carrier's airport lounge during a long layover at Sea-Tac, while those without specific airline privileges can typically purchase a day pass to enjoy the perks of Delta's Sky Club , the Alaska Lounge , the United Club , or the Club at SEA .

Once inside, you'll have access to high-speed Wi-Fi, large flat-screen TVs, great cell phone reception, all-you-can-eat gourmet snacks, an open bar, and on-hand airline staff for reservations assistance. Guests and family members can tag along, too. Just make sure to abide by the house rules, as lounges are meant to be peaceful and luxurious.

12 things to do around the Seattle area this weekend

Welcome to the weekend! From our new guide to Seattle’s Vietnamese cuisine to where to admire spring flowers during May, here’s our latest on local things to do.

Eats and drinks

  • Explore Seattle’s vibrant Vietnamese food scene with these Top 10 dishes picked by our food team. You can also check out the city’s buzziest Vietnamese restaurant debut in recent memory or this tried-and-true 25-year-old gem . (For something you may not tasted before, our critic recommends a secret menu item .)
  • Head to Bellevue for a delicious (and entertaining) meal. From a blowtorched cheesy beef stew that’s drawing long lines to a freshly griddled Turkish pide, these Eastside spots both play on an open-kitchen concept.
  • Be the star of your next picnic or barbecue with this bright, flavorful and quick-to-make corn salad from our recipe writer.

Outdoors and travel

  • Try one of these five Seattle-area outings to admire late spring flowers, from rhododendrons to peonies.
  • Go on an adventure to find some of the best big trees in Western Washington. Not all of them stand at the end of hiking trails, but these areas are worthy of pilgrimages to see the cedar, spruce, firs and more.

Movies and TV

  • Heading to the theaters? Check out what our reviewers thought of Bill Skarsgård’s “Boy Kills World,” the steamy love triangle “Challengers” featuring Zendaya, the bloody horror movie “Abigail” and other recent releases .

Performance arts

  • “Fat Ham” at Seattle Rep , running through May 12, is a must-see, our reviewer says. The tragicomic, Pulitzer Prize-winning play isn’t a typical re-imagining of Shakespeare. It’s witty, raunchy — and also opens up some raw, honest truths.
  • Two concerts inspired by nature play at Benaroya Hall this week. Northwest Symphony Orchestra teams up with Washington Trails Association to celebrate the state’s landscapes on Friday, while Seattle Symphony performs “Antarctic Symphony” tonight, Saturday and Sunday.
  • The new book “Truly, Madly, Deeply” by Alexandria Bellefleur is an enemies-to-lovers story that takes place in Seattle.
  • Here are four new cozy mysteries and eerie thrillers to get lost in. They’ll take you trudging around a peculiar forest or second-guessing a trip to an isolated, historic castle.
  • Seattle author and illustrator Haley Weaver’s new memoir explores her unlikely friendship with her own anxiety.
  • If you haven’t yet explored our guide to Seattle’s books scene, check out local, independent bookstores, book groups and more here .

About Seattle airport lounges

Central terminal: centurion lounge and uso center, concourse a: delta sky club, united club and the club at sea, alaska airlines lounges in seattle, concourse s: british airways lounge and the club at sea, final thoughts on seattle airport lounges.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (more commonly known as Sea-Tac or its airport code, SEA) is among the nation’s busiest airport facilities and has been named the best airport in North America in consecutive years by air transport rating agency Skytrax.

In addition to ongoing improvements to the airport’s infrastructure, the traveler experience has been enhanced with expansions and renovations of the airport's lounges.

Here’s what you need to know about Seattle’s airport lounges, including how to gain access and what you can expect once you’re inside.

SEA is a hub for Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, and serves dozens of other carriers on domestic and international routes. The facility has four main concourses (A, B, C and D) that connect at the Central Terminal, as well as two satellite concourses (N and S for North and South) that are accessible only by tram.

There are 10 Seattle airport lounges, including at least one in every concourse except for B.

If you’re flying in a premium cabin, have airline elite status or hold a credit card with airport lounge access , there’s a good chance you’re eligible for complimentary admission to at least one Seattle airport lounge. If not, many lounges have day passes available for purchase.

Most lounges require you to show government-issued identification along with a same-day confirmed boarding pass. In some cases, admission is restricted to three hours before departure. All lounges in the Seattle airport offer complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi and bathrooms not accessible to the general public, as well as the other amenities listed below.

The recently renovated Central Terminal is the hub of the Seattle airport, with abundant shops, restaurants and other services close at hand.

The central location makes it convenient for departures, but it’s a bit of a haul from the more far-flung gates, so plan accordingly if you’re connecting.

There are two lounges here: one airside and one landside.

AmEx Centurion Lounge in Seattle

Located on the mezzanine level overlooking the south end of the Central Terminal, airside from security checkpoint 3.

Complimentary access with the Centurion Card, The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express when traveling on any airline, and with the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card or Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card when traveling on a Delta-marketed or Delta-operated flight. Terms apply.

Centurion cardholders have no time restrictions. Other cardholders may enter up to three hours before a scheduled departure or up to three hours before the lounge closes (with a scheduled departure after that time). Connecting passengers may enter upon arrival.

You must present your valid, eligible AmEx card and physical government-issued ID for access.

AmEx opened this spacious lounge in February 2023, more than tripling the size of the previous location in the B concourse. Visitors can enjoy a buffet of hot and cold dishes and a coffee bar with lighter fare, a full-service premium bar, shower suites, private phone rooms and more.

With the recent upgrades, the AmEx Centurion Lounge is arguably the best lounge in Seattle airport history, and its location at the heart of the Central Terminal makes it the most convenient airport lounge Seattle has to offer.

The three lounges in Seattle airport Concourse A are accessible from Concourse B either on foot or via the SEA Underground tram. The Delta Sky Club is only seconds from where the B concourse begins.

Delta Sky Club in Seattle

Finally, annual memberships to all Delta Sky Clubs are available for purchase by Medallion status holders . Prices start at $695.00 or 69,500 SkyMiles for an individual membership. Note that even if you hold a membership, you won’t be able to access the lounge if you’re flying in basic economy — unless you also hold an eligible American Express credit card.

Effective 2/1/25, Reserve Card Members will receive 15 visits per year to the Delta Sky Club. To earn an unlimited number of visits each year, the total eligible purchases on the Card must equal $75,000 or more the previous year. This airy dual-level Sky Club is one of the finest lounges in the Seattle airport. Covering 21,000 square feet, the lounge has ample seating to avoid overcrowding. Visitors can enjoy hot and cold buffets with packaged snacks to go, self-serve coffee and soft drinks alongside a full-service bar, shower suites, a concierge desk and other amenities.

Alaska Airlines offers three Seattle airport lounges near C, D and N gates.

You can take the SEA Underground tram or walk directly between the C and D concourses. The N concourse is accessible only by tram.

Alaska Lounge (C gates)

Located on the mezzanine level by gate C16 at the end of the C concourse.

Complimentary access for Alaska Lounge members and immediate family (spouse or domestic partner and children under 21) or up to two guests; American Airlines Admirals Club and Concierge Key members; first class passengers on Alaska-operated flights over 2,100 miles; first and business class passengers on international Oneworld flights over five hours; some Alaska Airlines and Oneworld elite members; and others .

Active-duty U.S. military personnel may also be eligible for complimentary or discounted access.

You can purchase Alaska Lounge or Alaska Lounge+ membership at a $100 discount if you are an MVP Elite in the airline's Mileage Plan loyalty program.

This lounge reopened in late 2022 after renovations that added 3,000 square feet, making it less prone to overcrowding during peak hours.

The space offers panoramic views of the airfield and the Olympic Mountains beyond, making it an ideal stop for planespotters. Amenities include a relatively modest hot and cold buffet, a full-service bar and a concierge desk.

» Learn more: Great hotels where #avgeeks can planespot up close

Alaska Lounge (D gates)

Located airside from security checkpoint 4 near where the C and D concourses intersect.

This lounge’s proximity to the Central Terminal makes it the most convenient of the Alaska Lounges for those flying out of the A, B or S concourses. The trade off is that this location is the least scenic of the three, as it looks out on the apron between the C, D and N gates.

Though you can purchase day passes to Alaska lounges in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York-JFK, they are not available at the Alaska Airlines lounges in Seattle.

Renovated in 2023, the dual-level space offers an expanded buffet with hot and cold options, a barista station on the main level and a full-service bar with local craft brews and West Coast wines.

Alaska Lounge (N gates)

Located on the mezzanine level of the N concourse above gates N13-18.

Serving as Alaska’s flagship lounge in Seattle, this location is the largest of the three at over 15,000 square feet. The layout has floor-to-ceiling windows and a wide variety of seating arrangements to accommodate parties of all sizes, including booths, recliners and private wingback chairs.

Amenities include a self-serve hot and cold buffet, a full-service coffee bar and a premium bar with local beers on tap, and a concierge desk for travel assistance.

» Learn more: The best credit cards for airport lounge access

The S concourse offers two lounge options for its 16 gates. You can’t get there on foot, so you’ll need to take the SEA Underground tram from the A or B concourses. Look for airport transit signs between gates A3 and A4 or at the end of Concourse B near gates B10-15.

British Airways Terraces Lounge

Located on the mezzanine level of Concourse S; look for the elevator near gate S9.

Complimentary access for first and business class passengers on British Airways and other Oneworld airlines; British Airways Executive Club Silver and Gold members; and Oneworld elite members traveling on Oneworld airlines.

Most access permits entry for one guest. Infants under age 2 may enter for free.

British Airways plans to refresh this lounge with a new bar and enhanced menu offerings. In the meantime, amenities include self-serve snacks and beverages, a modest full-service bar, shower facilities and a business center.

The lounge enjoys a view of the south end of the airfield and the Olympic Mountains beyond. The separate business and first class lounge areas have similar amenities, though the smaller first class section tends to be less crowded.

Formerly a Delta Sky Club, this space was rebranded and redecorated in 2022 to provide a second location for The Club lounges in the Seattle airport. At more than 8,000 square feet, this lounge provides seating for 165 with windows looking out over the south end of the airfield and (on a clear day) Mount Rainier.

Amenities include a modest self-serve buffet with hot and cold options, a full-service bar with signature cocktails and local craft beers, shower suites and a separate TV lounge.

While Seattle's AmEx Centurion Lounge and Delta Sky Clubs offer premium lounge experiences, all of the Seattle airport lounges provide the opportunity to relax, refresh and connect during your travels.
