mcfly power to play tour

Review & Photography by Manny Manson for MPM

A chance to cover a guilty pleasure had me heading to Nottingham instead of Wolverhampton. McFLY aren’t everybody’s cup of tea but by judging at the huge queue waiting outside the venue when I arrive, there are a mighty few who like there’s with milk and two sugars.

On the undercard tonight are LostAlone , a British rock band that brought a unique blend of alternative rock, post-hardcore, and melodic elements to the music scene. Formed in Derby, England, in 2005, the band consisted of Steven Battelle (vocals and guitar), Alan Williamson (bass), and Mark Gibson (drums). Steven Battelle was not only the frontman but also the primary songwriter for the band.

The trio quickly gained attention with their energetic and dynamic live performances. LostAlone ‘s music often featured intricate guitar work, powerful vocals, and a mix of heavy and melodic elements that set them apart in the rock genre. They were known for their ability to seamlessly blend aggression with more anthemic and emotional moments within their songs.

Their debut album, “Say No to the World,” was released in 2007, it showcased their early sound and established them as a promising act in the alternative rock scene. The album featured tracks like “Unleash the Sands of All Time” and “Elysium,” which hinted at the band’s diverse musical influences.

In 2014, LostAlone released “Shapes Of Screams,” an album that marked a shift towards a heavier and more intense sound. Songs like “G.U.I.L.T.Y.” and “Crusaders” from this album showcased their evolution while maintaining the melodic elements that defined their style.

Unfortunately, despite their musical prowess and dedicated fanbase, LostAlone announced their disbandment in 2014 after the release of “Shapes Of Screams.” Steven Battelle continued his musical journey as a solo artist, ensuring that the legacy of LostAlone lived on through his continued work.

A new studio album, “The Warring Twenties,” was released in 2022, this signalled a reformation of the band. The six-year hiatus having done nothing to change their signature sound, which has been welcomed back by fans and critics alike. Tracks like “Enduring The Dream” and “The Last Drop Of Forever” demonstrated their continued commitment to delivering powerful and emotionally charged music.

LostAlone are a band appreciated for their authenticity, dynamic performances, and the emotional depth embedded in their music. The combination of Steven Battelle’s compelling vocals and the band’s ability to craft intricate, genre-blurring compositions leave a lasting impact on those who have discovered their unique sound.

Now what do they sound like live, has the energy left them or has it put lead in their proverbial pencils? Tonight, they are appearing on the undercard for Pop Rock Giants ‘McFly’ so has the race for early doors uncovered yet another Gem?

LostAlone , wow! What a way to kick off the night! They started things off with a bang, opening with “Enduring The Dream” from their latest album, ‘The Warring Twenties’ (2022). The energy in the room was charged right from the start, and you could feel the anticipation building throughout the set.

They seamlessly transitioned into “G.U.I.L.T.Y.” from ‘Shapes Of Screams’ (2014), and let me tell you, the crowd loved it, High kicking from Battelle as he unleashed his main spring, flying across the stage. The melodic sounds mixed with the raw energy of their performance created a totally immersive experience. The venue, vibrating with the intensity of their music.

“Hostages (Destiny)” from ‘Shapes Of Screams’ (2014) was another standout moment. The way the band played with dynamics, going from hauntingly beautiful verses to explosive choruses, was a testament to their musical prowess. The crowd was hooked, and so was I.

Taking it back to their earlier days, they threw in “Genevieve” from ‘Say No To the World’ (2007). A nostalgic trip for some long-time fans, and the newer ones got to experience the evolution of LostAlone’s sound. The band effortlessly moved through different eras of their discography, showcasing their versatility in this short 40-minute set.

“Crusaders” another from ‘Shapes Of Screams’ (2014) had everyone headbanging and singing along. The heavy guitar riffs and intense vocals echoed through the venue, creating an atmosphere of controlled chaos. LostAlone know how to command a stage, and they had the audience in the palm of their hands.

Then came the new single, “I’m A Fire That You Can’t Put Out” released in October 2023, showcasing the band’s ability to stay relevant while staying true to their signature sound. The crowd’s response to these tracks was incredible, you’d have thought they were the headliners such was the response, with fans already knowing every word despite the relatively recent releases.

And as if that wasn’t enough, they closed the set with “The Last Drop Of Forever” from ‘The Warring Twenties’ (2022). It was a powerful way to wrap up the performance, leaving everyone in awe of what they had just witnessed, and ready for the headliners, having set the bar and the energy levels.

LostAlone have delivered a set that was a perfect blend of nostalgia and freshness. Their melodic sounds, combined with the raw intensity of their performance, have no doubt left the audience hungry for more. If this is the future of LostAlone, count me in for the ride!

Now, let’s talk McFly . But first, let me catch my breath!

McFly , the British pop-rock band that burst onto the scene in the early 2000s, area powerhouse of infectious melodies, youthful energy, and catchy tunes. Formed in 2003, the band quickly became a sensation, capturing the hearts of fans with their undeniable charm and musical talent.

The core members of McFly include Tom Fletcher (vocals/guitar), Danny Jones (vocals/guitar), Dougie Poynter (bass guitar/backing vocals), and Harry Judd (drums). The band’s chemistry and camaraderie have played a crucial role in their success, creating a dynamic that resonates both on and off the stage.

McFly ‘s debut album, “Room on the 3rd Floor” (2004), immediately catapulted them into the limelight. Fuelled by hits like “5 Colours in Her Hair” and “Obviously,” the album showcased the band’s ability to blend pop sensibilities with rock influences. The infectious energy of their music and relatable lyrics endeared them to a wide audience, particularly among teenagers and young adults.

The band continued their streak of success with subsequent albums, including “Wonderland” (2005), “Motion in the Ocean” (2006), and “Radio:ACTIVE” (2008). McFly’s song writing, often a collaborative effort within the band, explored themes of love, adolescence, and the rollercoaster of emotions that accompany growing up.

In 2010, McFly took a creative turn with “Above the Noise,” incorporating electronic and dance elements into their sound. The album featured tracks like “Shine a Light,” a collaboration with Taio Cruz, showcasing the band’s willingness to experiment with their musical style.

Beyond their studio albums, McFly ‘s live performances became a hallmark of their career. The band’s concerts were known for their high energy, engaging stage presence, and a genuine connection with their audience.

McFly ‘s influence extends beyond their music; they have become cultural icons in the UK. In addition to their musical endeavours, individual band members have pursued diverse interests, including writing, acting, and television appearances.

After a brief hiatus, McFly reunited in 2019, much to the excitement of their loyal fanbase. The band released their sixth studio album, “Young Dumb Thrills,” in 2020, signalling a triumphant return to the music scene. In June 2023 they released their seventh studio album, “Power To Play,” this was released after the band had left a series of cryptic messages on their socials.

The first single from the album was released back in March entitled “Where Did All The Guitars Go” a kick out at guitar music is no longer featured in Radio songs. This was followed by “God of Rock & Roll” in the April, and the third single “Honey I’m Home” being announced on The One Show, on June 8 th The day before actual album release.

As they continue to evolve and capture the hearts of new generations, McFly remain a shining example of British pop-rock excellence. With a career marked by chart-topping hits, infectious melodies, and a genuine love for their craft, McFly continues to be a beloved and enduring force in the world of music.

Now can McFly deliver a knock-out punch, I suspect they will, and despite my age, I have to admit I’m genuinely excited to catch this young band doing what they do best, and that’s play live.

As always, he transition between LostAlone and McFly ‘s stage setting was, yet again, seamless, thanks to the Rock City’s crew’s well practiced lightning-fast set change. The anticipation in the sold-out venue is now at fever pitch as we wait, the familiar songs play, only for the crowd to erupt into cheers as ‘YMCA ‘ is accompanied on the house PA, with the lights dropping , this is McFly ’s ring walk music, and a song that they covered, the video being full of their typical lampoonery, setting the stage for their epic entrance.

McFly , aka Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter, and Harry Judd, stand on the stage soaking up the fan’s adulation, the noise is more akin to a football stadium than a 2k cap venue. Grabbing the moment, the boys kick off their set with “Where Did All The Guitars Go” from the latest album ‘Power To Play(2023). The atmosphere, already charged with electric excitement, is off the scale as the fans lose themselves in the band, who are grinning, as they launch into their well-rehearsed performance.

“Land of Bees,” another from the new album, keeps the energy high, and the crowd cheering. The band have set the tone for a night of musical celebration, and the crowd want to party hard. “One For The Radio” from 2008’s ‘Radio:ACTIVE,’ brings some on-stage antics, showcasing the band’s playful side and getting the audience even more engaged, with Tom reaching into the crowd, he has them all beaming like Cheshire cats as he does so.

The guitar sound and vocals in “God Of Rock & Roll”(2023) have the crowd singing along, not that they need encouraged, and “Friday Night” from ‘Motion in the Ocean(2006) brings more thundering bass from spinning top Dougie in his trademark dungarees, topless Harry Judd’s fast feet and percussive drum beats, creating a rhythmic frenzy in the venue. The energy escalates with “Corrupted,” from 2008, the crowd’s enthusiasm is infectious as they bounce as one, united in their love for the band. Draped over the barrier there are flags from Mexico, The USA, and Belgium to name a few, when asked several of the crowd have seen more than one show and some are down for the second night in Nottingham such is their devotion.

mcfly power to play tour

“Lies” from ‘Radio:ACTIVE, yet again showcases the vocals. Both Danny and Tom have shared lead and their voices have been on point every time. The energy in the venue is infectious, I find I’m smiling like an idiot, just like the rest of the crowd, who are now singing along quite happily at the tops of their voices. “Route 55”(2023)with its bouncy vibe has the crowd’s energy reaching new heights, as they get behind the band, and “I’m Fine”(2023) bring a different vibe with its unique, almost Beatles-esque style, Harry has the Ringo drum groove down to a tee. The breakdown see’s it take on a more raucous edge.

mcfly power to play tour

“Too Close For Comfort” from ‘Wonderland’ (2005) again has the crowd singing in unison, and “Everybody Knows” from 2008’s Radio:ACTIVE, maintaines the high energy with McFly ‘s signature sound. A lucky fan gets to play the cowbell on this one. I can’t confirm this visibly as from my vantage point I cannot see the band as I’m crushed into a corner behind a really animated section of fans, I reside to an occasional glimpse but can hear everything as the sound is really good. “Star Girl”(2006) bringst a vibrant vibe, and “Happiness” (2020) adds more stunning song-writing to the set.

mcfly power to play tour

“Obviously” from ‘Room on the 3 rd Floor” (2004) has the band and the crowd on fire, leading into the acoustic version of “Not Alone,” from the same album, features Tom and Danny power through this one on acoustics. The crowd’s reaction was filled with admiration for the stripped-back performance. The banger that is “All About You” continues, again this is a stripped-back version, the crowd don’t care as they sing along, at times drowning out the boys on stage, the duo’s musical chemistry is evident as the beam as they deliver this classic.

mcfly power to play tour

“Shine On” from the new album, has previously seen Steve Battelle joining the band on stage, creating a magical moment that the crowd loved. Steve has been helpful in being part of the song writing team for this new album. The set closer, “Red” from ‘The Lost Songs’ (2020), leave the audience cheering for more. With Danny making an appearance in amongst the fans certainly being a high point of the set, even if it was the set closer.

Returning for the encore, McFly open with “Forever’s Not Enough,” from the new album(2023) has the crowd singing at the top of their voices, creating a light and joyous atmosphere. “Honey I’m Home,” the 3 rd single from the new album, continues the riotous party atmosphere, with the energy of the room nearing its peak.

mcfly power to play tour

The final song of the night, “Five Colours In Her Hair,” has the atmosphere off the scale. The crowd and the band’s interaction creates a memorable moment, with everyone singing along to the “duh duh duh’s” and dancing along like loons. For a moment, the roof was metaphorically lifted from Rock City, as McFly deliver another unforgettable performance.

mcfly power to play tour

As the band leave the stage, the cheers for more were overwhelming. The promise of another night on Wednesday for the final show of the tour leave fans buzzing with excitement. The energy, the music, and the connection between the bands and the crowd make it a night to remember.

As for myself, as I walk back to my car I’m singing “Its All About You” crazy I know as I usually cover far heavier and darker bands, but tonight has been refreshing, yes, by comparison the band may be clean cut! But they are certainly very talented and definitely entertaining, this has to rate up there as a contender for gig of the year. What more can I say?

Writer for The Honey Pop

We know, Galaxy Defenders, we’ve been right there in the trenches with you, fighting for our lives in pre-sales this week to secure our Power To Play tickets. But it’ll all have been worth it once we get to see McFly back up on that stage. We’ve had some time to think while we were sitting in those ticket queues, and here are five songs that we would love to see on the setlist alongside the new album!

From what we’ve heard so far from Power To Play, McFly are really ramping up the Rock and Roll for this album, and we cannot wait to hear the rest of it. Their lead single, ‘Where Did All The Guitars Go?,’ and the recent drop ‘God of Rock & Roll’ have gotten us so excited for the album that June 9th feels so far away. We’re loving McFly leaning into the 80’s rock sound, and we can’t wait to hear what else is to come. It’s safe to say that based on what we’ve heard so far, we’re going to want to see the whole of Power To Play back-to-back live, but here are a few songs we think would really add to the setlist.

‘Five Colours in Her Hair’

One day in 2004, my parents decided to pick up Room On The 3rd Floor, the debut album of this new band, McFly, which had a lot of buzz. That album changed the trajectory of my life and helped to shape young Emily’s music taste for life. This album still hits just as hard as it did back then, and the debut single, ‘Five Colours in Her Hair,’ has been part of the soundtrack to so many lives. We cannot state enough how brilliant a debut this was. The uptempo, high-energy track feels like it would mesh really well with the Power To Play tour vibes. So much fun, and who doesn’t want to see this live?

‘Growing Up’ Ft. Mark Hoppus

McFly are legends in their own right, but when they collaborated with Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus , our world’s shifted. The song is all about retaining your youth by just being you and not giving an f about other people’s opinions – a message we can truly get behind. Along with the rest of the Young Dumb Thrills album, this song is a certified banger, and we’d love to see this added to the setlist . We recommend you watch the video for full viewing pleasure because it’s hilarious, top-tier content.

‘One For the Radio’

We think ‘One For the Radio’ is one for the setlist. This 2008 song is an absolute anthem and fits right into the rock and roll , punk vibes we’re anticipating with the new album. No need to ask, ‘Where Did All The Guitars Go?’ – they’re right here! This is the perfect opportunity to rock out with the crowd.

‘Star Girl’

Come on, Galaxy Defender; you didn’t think we’d leave this one out, did you? Many of us grew up listening to ‘Motion In The Ocean’ and pop it back into the CD player anytime we need a little serotonin boost. There was a point in time when if you put on Chris Moyles’ Radio 1 Breakfast Show on a Friday, you’d hear ‘Star Girl’ every single week as part of his McFlyDay feature. Every week. For Years. It’s just that good. ‘Star Girl’ still rules our skies, and so ‘Obviously’ (wink wink), we couldn’t leave this one out.

‘Love Is On The Radio’

It’s just so wholesome and fun; we will never stop loving ‘Love Is On The Radio,’ and if previous tours are anything to go by, this track provides a really great atmosphere. We’d love to see them slip this one onto the setlist. If you need a little boost today, just sit down with us for a second and watch this music video.

mcfly power to play tour

What’s New This Week: Ariana Grande, Wallows and More!

Interview: McFly’s Danny Jones on ‘Power To Play’, ‘God Of Rock And Roll’ and UK tour

Laura Cooney

It may be hard to believe, but McFly have now been on the UK music scene for 19 years – and in that time, they’ve become one of the country’s most successful bands.

With seven number one singles, six albums (including two chart-toppers), 10 million record sales and thousands of sold-out shows around the world under their belts, Tom, Danny, Dougie and Harry have made names for themselves with their guitar-led sound, high-energy stage performances and infectious personalities. Now they’re back with their latest album, ‘Power To Play’ – the follow-up to 2020’s ‘Young Dumb Thrills’ – which is due for release in June and inspired by 80s rock.

Ahead of the album’s release, I caught up with Danny to chat about the process of making the record, the band’s new single ‘God Of Rock And Roll’ – one of the songs he produced on the LP alongside Jason Perry – touring plans and more.

So tell us about the new album, ‘Power To Play’…

Oh! Where do I start? [laughs] It’s always a good question, this, because it’s almost like two years in the making. And it’s like we hope that it’s translated the way we had the excitement in the studio. I think one of the main things on this album is that we had a board of identity, where we put on this whiteboard, ‘What is McFly to us?’ all individually, what is that? And because we played our producer some music, and he was like, “Guys, what’s this? It’s boring! This isn’t McFly! Come on!” And we found ourselves constantly, I think it’s a beautiful position to be in, where we’re very in the commercial world, but we function like any rock band out there. And sometimes we can be called a boy band but then other times we get metalheads turning up to our signings and what have you.

So we were constantly trying to play that commercial game, where we teamed up with Taio Cruz to do ‘Shine A Light’ and get on radio and all this. There came a point where we were just like, “It still doesn’t really get us on radio when we try and play the radio game”. Radio 2 have always been a massive supporter of ours and we’ve always been thankful for that. But I think Radio 2 will support [us], like they’ve supported this album anyway. So we were just like, “let’s make an album about the band that we are”.

And on that board of identity, it was all about when we’re jumping up and down live, the energy, the honesty, the cheekiness. But then we don’t take ourselves too seriously but we do in that same sense when it comes down to making the music. And all this kind of, like, this personality for the band came about on this whiteboard. And obviously individually we’re so kind of different, but this board just locked us together.

And our producer’s like, “well 80s rock is that. Bon Jovi, all that. That was like pop music back then. That’s what it is now.” And it was like… it gave us the freedom to do pop music but in a guitar way, in a rock way, and we were like, “Wow, I can’t believe we’ve never thought of that.” Like I was into Bon Jovi as a kid, I used to go round the pubs doing a bit of [sings] “I wanna lay you down on a bed of roses”, all this kind of stuff, you know? And Van Halen – like this was pop at one point. So that gave us the belief to go, “right, lightbulb moment, we shouldn’t be so embarrassed”. it’s not even embarrassed but, like, the world you’re in, guitars weren’t around. We were doing CD:UK and there was a dancing boy band and then we’d come on. We felt cool as. Like, we were like the guitar band. It was just a different world that we were in. And this kind of gave us the belief that all of our influences have always been right. We’ve just never expressed them in the strength that we have on this album.

And then put together having this studio of ours, we created an album where I feel like when you listen to it you’re in the room with us. And that is so hard to create when you’re on location and you’re working through a laptop or you’re in a studio that’s under time constraints. It just gave us this freedom to jam as a band and play and record it and go, “oh, I wouldn’t have thought about it that way but ’cause I’m playing it…”. Like, Harry never gets on the kit. Normally we go in a studio and we’ve got the songs demoed and half-produced and we’re telling him, “mate, do this beat, ’cause this is what works on the computer”. This time it was humans, making music, and putting it into a computer and the computer was there just as a tape machine. And that for me is like what is amazing, because no-one will play our music like we play it, and I feel like that’s what we’ve done with this record. So, in a nutshell, that’s ‘Power To Play’, and we’re super proud of it [laughs].

You’ve touched on McFly HQ and having that dedicated space – how do you feel that’s impacted on the record and your approach to it compared to previous albums?

I think it’s one of the biggest parts, because in any friendship group, especially one that you work with – and being in a band is a friendship group, it’s a profession and you’ve gotta work professionally – you don’t get that time. And obviously with life happening on the outside, you don’t get time to sit and talk, what I call the quality time where you’ve got nothing else in the diary. I used to call it hotel time because we used to get it a lot more in hotels where we’d go touring and we’d just go out for dinner together as a band, like what friends would do. And this place has allowed us to do that. It’s like having an apartment together, again, where we can just sit and chill, Tom’ll be hanging over there, Doug’s hanging there and it’ll be, “mate, what do you think of this?”. You just start chatting differently. Whereas before, there’s no space and you’re just meeting up. This is a massive, massive part of the whole soul in this album.

Is it almost like a flashback to the early days and the ‘Room On The 3rd Floor’ era in a way – sort of coming full circle?

It is. Yeah, massively. Because, like, me and Tom wrote that in a hotel where we had all the time in the world and no families and no kids or any of that [laughs]. So it’s brought a bit of that back I suppose, yeah.

This record has been two years in the making as you’ve said. How do you feel you’ve progressed in terms of writing and musically from the previous album?

Yeah, I mean, we’re always trying to push ourselves and we’re always trying to be like, “what’s next? What’s gonna be exciting?” You know, nostalgia’s great but there’s only so much you can do of it, and we’re always up for doing great work and evolving. This album, basically, we looked at it as a tour set list, because that was on the board of identity. The best moments in this band are when we’re on stage and we do something cool on stage, and you’re looking at each other, and you put in so much work in rehearsals and you just get in and you’re just showing off. You’re like, “we’re at the O2 arena showing off what we can do!”, jumping up and down. That’s the best moments in this band.

So I think this album, we’ve had albums in the past, a couple of albums we tried too hard to be commercial and pop. That’s OK, and we’ve learned by that, and the beautiful thing with being in this band is it’s not just about the next album. It’s about the next ten albums and the journey that we go on. We’re fortunate enough to have a fan base that’ll stick with us through all of that, and people that believe in us around us. This is the first album that has completely translated. For example, ‘Shine A Light’, on the record, did its job, massive radio hit, but we weren’t gonna play it like that live. It was R’n’B-produced in a way, and we were like, “What?!” So live, that song is almost better because it’s this rock version that we’ve made McFly. And that was the problem. We were like, “Why don’t we ever do that on records?”. And that was on the board of identity, how do we translate that on a record, what we do live? And do it for the sweaty fans at the front? [laughs] Well, hopefully the sweaty fans are everywhere, but you know what I mean!

I mean having been one of those fans and jumping up and down and singing along, it is definitely that…

Well that’s what we tried to make on this album. Yeah, an album that you can actually play at home and get that gig feeling. I always remember the Oasis documentary when they first came out and they went in a studio and they were like, “man, this is s***! This isn’t Oasis!” It was too edited, too posh. I remember them getting their front of house guy to come down in this room and say, “just record them live, like how I remember them, just record them”. And that was the sound of Oasis, wasn’t it? And sometimes I think we overthink these things when you go into studios. We’ve all been playing our instruments for so long and playing with each other for so long, and I feel like that is enough. That’s enough to put on an album. I feel like that’s what we’ve done this album.

You’ve got some festival dates coming up this summer and have just announced your own tour as well – are there any songs you’re really looking forward to playing live?

Yeah, like all of them. There’s a couple of them that I’m actually fearful of as well [laughs]. I’ll start with the ones I’m excited about and then I’ll give my reasons. So ‘Where Did All The Guitars Go?’, we’re all gonna have rock neck after that [laughs]. I can’t wait to do something fun with the crowd with that, just everyone headbanging and having fun. It’ll sound amazing live. ‘God Of Rock And Roll’, I’m excited by that but I’m fearful, because I pushed myself in guitar solo world. It took me three and a half hours to get this guitar solo correct. I mean, I’ve kind of got it down [laughs] but it is some of the fastest guitar playing because it was kind of inspired by Van Halen. And then there’s songs like ‘Land Of The Bees’ which is like our first ever song that was inspired by Rush – it’s got a 7/4 time signature in part of it, and if you don’t concentrate through that one you’re gonna be lost. So I just hope that we practice it enough that it becomes second nature. We all do. So it’s just doing that justice, I feel like. But I’m excited by the whole album, because the whole album is just what we did here is what we’re gonna do on stage. So it’s just bringing it all together as a show.

I did want to ask about ‘God Of Rock And Roll’ which is the new single and which I also know you were involved in producing – tell us more about that…

Yeah, well, I’ve always kind of loved my production. That’s what I did at college and then when I met Tom I was doing it and then I left it behind for a few years ’cause I was in a band, and then I picked it up again later on when I couldn’t quite articulate how I wanted something to sound. So I had to just do it. And then I started producing all of our B-sides and our deluxe songs and I was like, “I’m learning here, I’m sitting next to some cool people learning about it all”. Then I went on to produce a few singles with McFly, like ‘Love Is Easy’ and all that, and then I got offered to do some One Direction stuff and some Vamps stuff and then writing and producing that.

So then I just learnt a lot. And now me and Dougie have this side thing where we write and produce for other people now, ’cause it’s fun and we love to do it. And Steve who’s involved in this last album as well. And helping Tom with his book, the Space Band stuff and all of that. And Jason [Perry] who’s just been a big supporter of mine as a producer, this album we just went 50/50 on basically. There were some songs I took, some songs he took. This is my first… I don’t know whether ‘Love Is Easy’ was the first single, I can’t remember. But this is my first big single I’ve had as a producer, I think, in this world. So I’m very proud of it. And all of the years of picking up stuff, this is what it’s come to. I feel really privileged to be able to have that power in a way, of creating something that the band want. “You wanna sound like this? OK, I’ll help us do that.” I feel really privileged to help that.

I also wanted to ask a bit more how you guys have evolved as a band over the years – has that felt like something that’s been quite important to you?

Yeah, I don’t think we even think that far ahead. I think what we always think is we go into an album, of what’s gonna align us all. Because we all appreciate music, we’re all writers in our own way and we all approach music in our own way. And we all need something as a band to latch onto that excites us. So for example, on this album it was 80s music, it was 80s rock. And you could take anything – AC/DC, Bon Jovi, KISS, whatever, Bryan Adams, whatever it is. Like Bryan Adams is one of Tom’s idols, you know? So, and even Springsteen to an extent, his ‘Tunnel Of Love’ album and ‘Human Touch’ and all that, they’re all 80s. And ‘Born In The USA’, it’s 80s. You could pull so much from that genre of music.

So as you can see, through our albums, like ‘Room On The 3rd Floor’ was me and Tom latched on to Beatles and Beach Boys. The second album we leant more into Oasis a little bit more, third album was like Jellyfish, The Who, so we have all these bands and almost likes rules in a way, just to keep us in the right place. So it is important, and I feel like that helps us to keep it fresh as well and evolve that way, rather than getting too far away from ourselves. For example I feel like the album ‘Above The Noise’, even though the songwriting was still there, we were trying too hard to be commercial. We got to the point where we were like, “we really love these songs but how do we do this live?” We didn’t understand it. So we lost a little bit of track there but you always put it back somewhere along the line, because you learn for it.

Going back to performing live – how was getting to play at Glastonbury last year?

Yeah, well obviously, it was one off the bucket list, wasn’t it? I do think about that day quite often, and like, if only we had a bigger stage. But then I think it’s probably good that we didn’t because we caused a lot of hype [laughs]. And a lot of people were p***ed off at Glasto for not putting us on a bigger stage, and we were like, “yeah, you go, you tell ’em!” But you often get this, and I’ll speak truthfully, you often get people that just don’t know your band, don’t believe in it and think, “ooh, they’re pop, they’re this”. It just so happened to be that maybe, you know, the guys at Glastonbury were like, “well we can’t put them on a big stage, they’re not rock enough, they’re not big enough, they’re not getting played on radio”. And we did what we do and we smashed and everyone loved it and people couldn’t see it because they shut the field down. So you know, we’re just going round and not that we need to prove it any more, but we’re still kind of proving it in a way even though we’re coming up to our 20th anniversary. It’s quite sad. But I feel like that keeps the fire in our bellies, in a way. Like this dude doesn’t believe, he doesn’t understand our band, well let’s tell him, let’s show him. So Glastonbury was our chance to show what we can do.

Speaking of the bucket list – what’s still on there for you? Because I feel like you’ve done so much already…

There’s always people you wanna work with. I think on this album working with James Bay was amazing. I got friendly with him through playing football and he’s just a really nice guy. You know what, not a lot of people take you up on these offers, but James was super cool. He was like, “course I’ll write with you”. He understands our band. We’ve asked many other people but maybe they’ve not got time or it’s not right for them, I don’t know. So obviously there’s loads of people out there we’d like to collaborate with or do things with, and maybe there is time for that. But you can’t dwell on that too much.

I think playing Hyde Park would be another bucket list for me. Again that would be amazing. Wembley Stadium – dream big Danny! And I think cracking somewhere like.. ’cause going to Brazil is incredible and smashing it out there, but I think it would be great to have another country close to us. I think there’s talk of doing Spain maybe, because we’ve already got a fan base, so I think doing some festivals and smashing it in another country, even at this stage in our career, would be amazing.

You’ve mentioned the 20th anniversary coming up next year – have you got any plans for that yet?

No, we’re probably just gonna totally ignore it and concentrate on this album! [laughs] We’ll do a 25th anniversary. We kind of like, we don’t know about that yet, whether we need to just think about the timing of it. It might get in the way. ‘Cause you’ve gotta go with momentum, with writing as well. We’ve done a bit of nostalgia when we came back after our break, so is it time to do nostalgia again? I don’t know. We’re really focused on new music at the minute. Maybe it will end up being a 25 rather than a 20, I don’t know. So we’re just trying to work out where our heads are at, because you only get that momentum. If we were to do another album now and we’ve got this excitement of ‘Power To Play’ still smashing it, we’d wanna do that again. We don’t wanna go back to nostalgia. So it might have to wait, but we’ll see.

Extra dates are announced by the '00s English pop band

McFly are on tour supporting their seventh studio album Power to Play with extra dates announced for November 2023. Tickets are available at 9am on Friday 16 June.

The youngest band to have a debut album reach number one on the charts, McFly broke the Beatles' longstanding record in 2004 with Room on the 3rd Floor . To date, the band have seven UK number-one singles and five top-ten albums.

Their new album Power to Play doesn't aim to break the mould. Instead, the band focused on producing a nostalgic album that makes you feel like a kid again – listening to your first rock 'n' roll songs, picking up your first guitar, and unadulterated fun.

Power to Play begins this June and runs through the year, with extra dates for Aberdeen's Music Hall, Bridlington Spa, and the Cambridge Corn Exchange added towards the tour's end. Known for their high on-stage energy, McFly have influenced numerous to-be professional musicians like One Direction's Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson.

McFly's Power to Play tour 2023 UK, extra dates: Thursday 9 November – Music Hall, Aberdeen Friday 10 November – Bridlington Spa, Bridlington Sunday 12 November – Cambridge Corn Exchange

Tickets are available for extra dates to McFly's Power to Play tour at 9am on Friday 16 June.

‘ Power To Play ‘ sees the band return to the guitar-heavy sound of early hits like  Obviously ,  All About You  and their debut,  5 Colours In Her Hair , with the group telling RETROPOP’s July 2023 issue that the project is their most authentic to date .

“On the last album, I think we were just excited to be back together in the band and recording again. We didn’t really have a clear vision of what the album was going to sound like,” says Tom. “This time, we knew we wanted the album to feel like a family of songs that belong together, but it just took us a while to figure out what that was.”

During the sessions, they made a moodboard for the project that brought together their individual visions for the direction of the LP and drew on the songs they most enjoy performing live. “We all wrote  5 Colours In Her Hair  and  Obviously  – the really fun, uptempo ones,” adds Dougie.

“It was pretty much like going back to why we all got into playing our instruments in the first place,” continues Harry. “What’s exciting about being in a band, rehearsing, touring, and trying to recreate that on an album for the first time. That vision became very clear and exciting.”

On those early inspirations, Tom says: “We all got excited by bands when we were kids. Especially guitar music – it’s always been so exciting and aspirational and we’ve never really fully embraced that. Even though we’ve always played, we’ve never really fully embraced that as an idea and a concept until right now. So it became, ‘Let’s try and write an album that is gonna make kids want to play air guitar around their bedrooms!’.”

Album: mcfly - power to play, chart-topping british foursome turn the amps up to 11, returning to their rock'n'roll roots.

mcfly power to play tour

When McFly returned to our loudspeakers in the summer of 2020 with Young Dumb Thrills , the record marked their first in a decade. The foursome, comprised of guitarist/vocalist Tom Fletcher, bassist/vocalist Dougie Poynter, guitarist /vocalist Danny Jones and drummer Harry Judd, had no qualmed about admitting the struggles that'd faced coming back together as a band (their lackluster 2010 release, Above The Noise , was very much the sound of a group hitting peak commercial heights with the overprocessed artwork and digital sounds to match).

But, whatever your preconceptions of a band like McFly, their musical accolades are undeniable, racking up seven UK No. 1 singles, five top-10 albums, six sold-out tours, and 10 million in record sales worldwide during their near-20-year career. And, whilst Young Dumb Thrills , was a huge step forward for the group (both in the physical reunion but also in the production), the output came across a little saccharine at times. Thankfully, after the last few years back out on the live circuit, Power To Play is a defiant return to their rock'n'roll roots.

Single “Where Did All The Guitars Go?” (somewhat ironically given their own forays into polished pop), questions the current landscape of bedroom beatmakers in favour of angry singalongs troubled teens can chant to in sweaty gig venues. Poynter’s pop-punk fuelled “I’m Fine” delivers on that front, as he contemplates the rest of his (band?) mates settling down. Better yet is the chaotic call of “Crash” with its stuttering dual guitars and an immense drum roll that thrusts us into the last chorus all in under two minutes.

Alongside the mighty riffs (see: absolute standout “Land of The Bees”, essentially their "Seven Seas of Rye" with May-esque magnitude on the fretboard), there are also some Genesis-inspired Eighties drums courtesy of Judd and Van Halen “Jump”-style parping keys on “Route 55”. The latter track, as the name might suggest, channels a lot of the best stonewashed double denim Dad Rock (perhaps not surprising giventhree quarters of the band are, in fact, dads themselves now) encouraging us all to get the roof down and the shades on.

Forget “Thunderstruck”. Pass me the flannel shirt and fire up Power To Play behind the wheel for a stadium-sized summer of fun.

McFly tour: support act and who is the opener for Leeds O2 Academy Power To Play show?

McFly will be joined by an opening act for their Power To Play show at O2 Academy in Leeds

McFly's support act for the Power to Play shows have been confirmed.

The pop-rockers are touring the UK throughout October and November. They will be playing shows in some of the most iconic venues.

Door times have been revealed for the upcoming shows, including the stop in Leeds on Monday (November 13) - as well as the Power to Play setlist. But who will be opening for the group?

Here's all you need to know:

Who is the support act for McFly show?

The opener for Power to Play tour is LostAlone and they will appear at all of the shows in 2023, it has been confirmed. The group will be the support act for the full tour.

Who are LostAlone?

Formed in 2005, the band consists of Steven Battelle, Alan Williamson and Mark Gibson. The group is originally from Derby and have toured extensively across the UK and Europe over the years.

LostAlone have released four albums including 2022's The Warring Twenties. The band's most popular songs on Spotify include Waiting For The Magic To Show Up, I'm a Fire You Can't Put Out, The Final Call Forever, Blood is Sharp and Do You Get What You Pray For?

It is not the first time LostAlone have supported a major act - like McFly - on tour, having opened for the likes of My Chemical Romance, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Enter Shikari and Paramore.

Expert Picks: Masters Tournament

Expert Picks

Change Text Size

How it works: Each week, our experts from PGATOUR.COM will make their selections in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf. Each lineup consists of four starters and two bench players that can be rotated after each round. Adding to the challenge is that every golfer can be used only three times per each of four Segments.

Aside from the experts below, Golfbet Insider Rob Bolton breaks down the field at the Masters Tournament in this week's edition of Power Rankings .

Betting picks

WILL GRAY (Lead, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Scottie Scheffler (+400) – It’s not sexy, but I’ve spent too much time trying to rationalize a pick on someone else. At the end of the day, Scheffler was red-hot heading into his 2022 Masters triumph – and he’s playing materially better this time around.
  • Top 10: Ludvig Åberg (+225) – We all know the trends against first-time winners, but they don’t apply to the finish markets. Åberg led the Valero field in SG: Tee-to-Green last week and has all the skills required to contend in his major championship debut.
  • Longshot: Russell Henley (+6000) – The former Georgia Bulldog finished T4 here a year ago and has been known to heat up on the greens from time to time. Two top-5s in his last three starts show signs of promise.
  • H2H: Chris Kirk (-120) over Keegan Bradley – There aren’t a ton of course comps for Augusta National, but there are some undeniable parallels with the terrain of Kapalua. Expect the Sentry champ to play well, having finished T23 here last year, while Bradley has missed three of four cuts entering the week.

BEN EVERILL (Senior writer, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Xander Schauffele (+1600) – Look, we all know Scheffler has the chance to take this tournament and run with it but my process of elimination story brought me a winner last year and I’m banking it can do it again. Schauffele is ready to contend again… and you have to be knocking on the door to eventually be let in. Back off my blacklist and into the furnace!
  • Top 10: Sahith Theegala (+320) – I really like Theegala as an outright option here over the next few years. T9 a year ago with a hot finish and another year wiser to his game. He still has more foul balls off the tee than I’d like but if he can get away with those this week he’s a chance.
  • Longshot: Jason Day +6600 – Longshots don’t win the Masters and my campaign to move the threshold to +4000 this week fell on deaf ears (Zalatoris, Finau, Smith…). But how can I not plump for the man who – in his prime – had me declaring he’d win two green jackets in his lifetime? Multiple chances in the past… why not another.
  • Head to Head: Shane Lowry (-110) over Collin Morikawa – Lowry’s Tee-to-Green game has been good of late whereas Morikawa is in a ball-striking slump compared to his usual high standards. This is as much a Morikawa fade as anything else.

CHRIS BREECE (Senior Content Manager Golfbet)

  • Winner: Scottie Scheffler (+400) – I’ll be that guy. My three finalists were him, Spieth and Schauffele. It came down to who I trusted most to win. And it’s not even close.
  • Top 10: Matt Fitzpatrick (+275) – I’m staying patient and not backing off my support of him. He had the best weekend of anyone in San Antonio and I still feel like he has great golf ahead of him.
  • Longshot: Max Homa (+5500) – I know what you’re thinking. However, name me a player with more talent/star power whose odds are above +5000.
  • H2H: Shane Lowry (-110) over Collin Morikawa – I almost picked Lowry for the top 10. Generally plays well here and has been in good form.

MATT DELVECCHIO (Social content manager, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Will Zalatoris (+4000) – Beware the hungry dog runs faster. It’s comeback time for the previous major runner-up. He’s come back to good form from his back surgery with a three-game stretch of T13, T2 and T4 earlier in the year. He played with Tiger on Monday and saw how great he looked recovering from his own surgery. Will even talked about the influence Tiger's comeback has had on his own journey. People are sleeping on Zalatoris' comeback because of his MC at THE PLAYERS and T74 in Houston. Augusta will bring something out of him. Zalatoris is ready to be among the top players in the world and will show it this week.
  • Top 10: Bryson DeChambeau (+300) – It’s been four years since he called Augusta National a par 67. He is older and wiser now to say such a thing. DeChambeau's game fits Augusta well and I see him taking a big charge at this championship in a quest to become a two-time major champion.
  • Longshot: Sam Burns (+5500) – The only reason I’m taking him here is that I’ve liked him to win for the past couple of months now and he hasn’t. A wise man once said, “if you like a player to win soon, more likely than not they will”.
  • H2H: Lowry (-110) over Morikawa – Collin’s game is a mystery this year. Most alarming has been his iron play which in past years has been seen as unstoppable. Combo that with the fact that Lowry does like Augusta and is in relatively good form as of late. I’ll take the current form over past success.

Power Rankings: These 10 Players Look Ready to Win the Masters

The 2024 Masters is here, and our model has identified the 10 players with the best chance to claim a green jacket. Here's the breakdown.

  • Author: Jim Stracka

Welcome to Power Rankings, a weekly feature on SI Golf from our partners at KeyCompete . This week the PGA Tour drops into San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open, the final stop before the Masters. Here’s how our model sees this week shaping up:

2024 Masters Preview

The azaleas are in bloom and our focus is on Augusta National for the 2024 Masters Tournament. Designed by the legendary Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie, ANGC has been a theater of dreams since its inception in 1933. Known for its immaculate condition, strategic layout and iconic features like Amen Corner, the course requires a combination of precision, power and creativity. Its undulating greens, perilously placed bunkers and ever-present threat of Rae’s Creek are a pure physical and mental test. Here are the 10 players our model likes this week.

KeyCompete’s 2024 Masters Power Rankings

1. Scottie Scheffler (+450) - The reigning king of consistency. No 1 in the World and playing like it at just the right time.

2. Jon Rahm (+1100) - The defending champion . Powerful game, fiery competitiveness won’t go out of style. Repeat win would not surprise.

3. Xander Schauffele (+1600) - Balanced game and mental toughness make him as a serious threat. Three top 10s in his last four visits. Still chasing elusive first major.

4. Brooks Koepka (+2500) - Unmatched major championship pedigree and a couple of previous close calls here. He’ll be ready.

5. Hideki Matsuyama (+2500) - A past champion, and his precise iron play and calm demeanor are dialed in. Won the Genesis in Febrary and hasn’t finished outside the top 12 since then.

6. Rory McIlroy (+1000) - The pursuit of the elusive Grand Slam continues . Recent form and refined short game signal this could be the year.

7. Will Zalatoris (+3500) - Still early in his comeback season from back surgery, but has looked strong so far. Consistency will be key to his success.

 8. Jordan Spieth (+2200) - Exceptional putting and course management could launch him right into the mix. Should be a thrill ride regardless.

9. Joaquin Niemann (+2500) - Unique blend of creativity, power, and finesse fits Augusta like a glove. Ready to step into the major-championship spotlight.

10. Sahith Theegala (+4500) - A rising star who seems to be building to something big. Fearless approach and adaptability make him a dark horse.

About Last Week

The 2024 Valero Texas Open will be remembered for the dramatic emergence of Akshay Bhatia and a playoff that ended in heartbreak for Denny McCarthy. The playoff was only one hole but it was theatrical, and Bhatia’s victory earned him an invitation to Augusta National for his first Masters.

KeyCompete had —dare we say—a masterful week, going 5-1 on our picks. Our yearly record is 62-45 heading into the first major of the year.
