20 Best Things To Do In Morro Bay, California

Planning a trip to Morro Bay and wondering what to do in the area? As Central California locals, we have been to this charming coastal town many times and are here to share all the best things to do in Morro Bay!

The main attraction of Morro Bay is Morro Rock, a towering volcanic plug that stands tall above the shoreline and can be spotted from just about anywhere in town. Morro Bay is also known for its long stretches of beaches, fresh seafood, and lots of fun outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and surfing.

With mild coastal weather, plenty of attractions, and a waterfront strip full of inviting restaurants, Morro Bay is one of our favorite California seaside escapes year-round.

If you’re planning a trip to the Central Coast, here are the 20 best things to do in Morro Bay, California!

20 Best Things To Do In Morro Bay:

1. hike the black hill trail.

morro bay travel guide

The Black Hill Trail is one of the best hikes to do in Morro Bay that leads to an incredible viewpoint of Morro Rock , the coast, and the surrounding landscape.

Black Hill Trail is located within Morro Bay State Park , next to the Morro Bay Golf Course . If you’re looking for a shorter route, you can drive up to the top of the hill and park at a designated Black Hill Trail parking lot just 0.3 miles from the viewpoint.

For a longer hike and some exercise, you can park at the bottom of the hill and turn the Black Hill Trail into a 3-mile-long hike. This is the option that we chose on our visit because this area is just gorgeous and the hike goes by quickly!

Panoramic views of the Morro Bay Estuary

This trail starts off in a forest full of beautiful California oak woodlands and climbs 600 feet up to a 360 overlook of Morro Bay, Los Osos town, and Morro Bay Estuary. The hike ends at the top of Black Hill, a small volcanic hill made of solidified magma.

It’s best to hike the Black Hill Trail on a sunny afternoon when the morning haze has burned off offering miles and miles of stunning coastal views. Overall the Black Hill Trail is easy but do give yourself a couple of hours to tackle the uphill elevation gain and enjoy the views!

2. See Morro Rock Up Close

morro bay travel guide

The biggest attraction of Morro Bay is Morro Rock. Morro Rock is a towering lava dome formed by a volcano and can be best seen by hiking to an overlook or by walking down the beach. On a clear day, you can see Morro Rock soaring high above the shoreline from as far as Cayucos!

Morro in Spanish stands for “ domed rock ” which is a very appropriate name for this unique rock formation. Morro Rock is one of several volcanic plugs within San Luis Obispo County that formed millions of years ago when lava hardened inside active volcanos. Other natural elements such as wind, rain, and ocean water also constantly shape these rock domes.

morro bay travel guide

Morro Rock is connected to the shoreline so you can walk all the way up to it. To experience it up close you can take Coleman Drive to a parking lot located next to the rock. Coleman Park and Embarcadero Drive also offer pretty amazing views of the rock in its full scale.

Morro Rock is considered to be a sacred site for the Salinan and Chumash tribes. Because of the rock’s fragility and sacred meaning, it is not permitted to climb up on the rock – but visitors can enjoy pretty amazing views up close!

3. Relax In a Cozy Waterfront Inn

morro bay travel guide

Relaxing by the waterfront is one of the best things to do in Morro Bay. And what better place to do so than from the comfort of a seaside hotel!

Estero Inn is a sophisticated Morro Bay hotel known for its prime location. This boutique hotel sits along the water’s edge in the heart of Morro Bay and boasts cozy accommodations and views of Morro Rock. Every booking comes with an incredible ocean view, a pillow-top mattress, and kitchen basics like a microwave, coffee maker, and fridge.

morro bay travel guide

Guests can book a standard room or a more spacious suite, some of which feature a fireplace. In the hotel’s common spaces, you can play billiards or enjoy the sunshine from the terrace. Those feeling a bit more adventurous can take advantage of the inn’s bike, kayak, and pontoon rentals.

4. Enjoy Brunch At Dorn’s Breakers Café

morro bay travel guide

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy a delicious breakfast with fantastic views, head over to Dorn’s Breakers Café! This iconic Morro Bay restaurant is situated slightly uphill facing the ocean with picture-perfect views overlooking Morro Rock.

Dorn’s Breakers Café is a popular spot, especially on Saturdays and Sundays for their weekend brunch . After a fun weekend full of outdoor activities, there is nothing better than enjoying a glass of Mimosa or a Bloody Mary while looking out at stunning coastal views.

morro bay travel guide

Dorn’s Breakers Café has been a locally operated business since 1942, passed down in the same family by several generations. They specialize in providing excellent service paired with fresh meals & seafood.

For weekend brunch I highly recommend one of their Eggs Benedict plates that come with a mimosa. I ordered the Eggs Sardou plate that is similar to Eggs Benedict but with artichoke bottoms instead of Canadian Bacon. They also have an extensive lunch and dinner menu covering a variety of food items fresh fish to fried seafood, soups, salads and so much more!

5. Camp Next To The Beach

morro bay travel guide

If you enjoy beach camping, you’ll love staying at the Morro Strand State Beach Campground ! This campground is located next to Highway 1 with easy access to the beach and offers excellent views of the ocean. Morro Strand SB has tent and RV campsites that come with picnic tables, fire pits, restrooms, and trash bins.

This is a great place to stay if you enjoy water activities like fishing, surfing, windsurfing, and walking on the beach.

morro bay travel guide

Do note that Morro Strand is part of California State Beaches. If you’re traveling with pets, keep in mind that dogs are only allowed in the paved areas of the campground and not on the beach itself ( but there is an easily accessible dog beach just up the road!).

If you’re looking for a “ Woodsier ” experience, consider booking the Morro Bay State Park Campground which is situated next to a forest and California oak woodlands.

6. Go On a Bike Ride

morro bay travel guide

With miles of paved pathways, trails, and beaches, hopping on a bike is one of the best ways to take in all the best that Morro Bay has to offer.

If you’re looking for something a bit more thrilling, consider renting an electric bike in Morro Bay ! If you’ve never ridden an electric bike before and would rather go on a guided tour, check out this private guided E-bike tour that will take you on a fun adventure to see Morro Rock, cruise down several miles on the sandy shoreline, along bike paths, and through local neighborhoods.

morro bay travel guide

Having an E-Bike is one of the most convenient and fastest ways to get around, especially if you’re short on time and want to cover a lot of ground. On our most recent trip to Morro Bay, we brought with us our newest addition, the Aventon Sinch Electric Bike.

The Aventon Sinch is a fat tire folding e-bike that can easily pack into our Promaster campervan during our travels and unfold at our destination, allowing us to roam and explore.

7. Take a Surfing Lesson

morro bay travel guide

If it’s your first time traveling to the California Coast, trying out surfing is a must-do activity! With soft, sandy beaches and gentle, rolling waves in Morro Bay, there isn’t a reason not to!

If you don’t have your own surfing gear, or you’ve never tried surfing before, we recommend signing up for a private beginner surfing lesson like this one in Morro Bay . During this 90-minute lesson, you will learn surfing basics from experienced, encouraging instructors that will make beginner surfing so fun and exciting.

This surfing lesson includes all of the necessary gear so all you need to bring to the beach is yourself and a good time!

8. Hike To The Top Of Cass Hill

morro bay travel guide

Cass Hill Trail is a local hike in the small town of Cayucos, just a 10-minute car ride north of Morro Bay. While Cass Hill Trail is not well known, it is one of my favorite coastal hikes especially if you’re looking for a trek that’s not very crowded. We stumbled upon this trail while searching for dog-friendly hikes near Morro Bay and have been back here several times for the stunning views that it offers.

Cass Hill Trail is around 3 miles long if you hike the entire route , out and back. We usually hike a portion of the trail that leads to a beautiful viewpoint on top of Cass Hill overlooking the ocean and then hike back the same way that we came. From this viewpoint, you can see a clear view of Cayucos town, the Central Coast, and even Morro Rock in the distance.

morro bay travel guide

Cass Hill trail is short but it does climb to the top of a hill gaining around 500 feet in elevation so I would rate it as moderate due to the steep incline. This trail can get very hot and is exposed to the sun so make sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen , especially in the summer.

Tip: If you plan to do this hike, we suggest parking on the North Side of Cass Hill, off Cayucos Drive and Little Cayucos Creek Rd. We followed the Cayucos Cass Hill map from AllTrails , starting in the north and hiking south.

9. Take Your Pup To Morro Bay Dog Beach

morro bay travel guide

If you’re looking for somewhere to take your pup in Morro Bay to run around and get some energy out, you’ll be glad to know that Morro Bay has its own designated dog beach . Morro Bay Dog Beach is a stretch of a long, open spot along the shoreline where doggies can happily play off-leash.

Our pup Quito loves coming to this beach to get his paws wet in the water and chase the ball in the sand. Everyone at this beach is always so friendly and our dog has the best time running around!

morro bay travel guide

Do note that it’s up to visitors to keep this beach clean and carry out any trash from the beach. A few things that we always bring to the dog beach include:

  • Dog poop bags . We love using these Earth-rated doggie poop bags for cleanup.
  • Reusable water bottle with plenty of water. Saltwater can make your dog feel extra thirsty!
  • A collapsable water bowl that folds small to easily fit into a backpack, purse, or tote.
  • Chuckit! classic ball launcher easily adds extra distance for chasing the ball on the beach. Our dog is completely obsessed with this!
  • 2 Hounds no pull harness and leash to get your pup safely onto the beach and back to the car. This is an open beach that runs parallel next to Highway 1 so it’s best to keep them on a leash until you reach the shoreline.

10. Indulge In Fresh Seafood

morro bay travel guide

One of the best things about visiting coastal towns is the fresh, drool-worthy seafood that you can find at the local restaurants.

Embarcadero is Morro Bay’s beachfront strip that is lined with gourmet restaurants , shops, museums, and hotels. You can just park your car in the downtown area and take a stroll along the Embarcadero waterfront which offers plenty of excellent seafood restaurants.

A few of the most popular seafood eateries in Morro Bay include:

  • Tognazzini’s Dockside Restaurant
  • Great American Fish Company
  • Giovanni’s Fish Market And Galley

11. Go On a Boat Tour

morro bay travel guide

If you’re looking for an exciting activity to do with the family, Sub Sea Tours is located on the Embarcadero strip and offers several different interesting ocean tours.

Unlike other areas where whale watching is seasonal, Morro Bay is a place where you can observe migratory whales year-round. Sub Sea Tours offers daily 9 a.m. whale-watching trips for just $55 a person.

For something a bit more kid-friendly, you can go on the Sub Sea boat that has a viewing window located underneath the deck to experience seeing ocean life underwater. This is a great activity that is both educational and safe – perfect for families with younger kids!

12. Watch a Sunset On The Beach

morro bay travel guide

Having a difficult time deciding what to do in Morro Bay? Don’t stress because visiting Morro Bay is all about chillin’ and relaxing beach vibes!

If you’re looking for a tranquil way to spend the evening, head down to the beach and set up a picnic for sunset . Central Coast has some pretty epic sunsets, especially in the winter months. The most colorful sunsets typically happen where there are some clouds in the sky, but not too much wind.

morro bay travel guide

Be sure to look up sunset times and arrive about an hour early for the “Golden Hour”. The Golden Hour is an hour before sunset when everything is illuminated in golden lighting by the setting sun. Golden Hour is one of the best times for photography so bring a camera to snap a few photos for memories!

13. Observe Sea Otters By The Mo rro Bay T-Pier

morro bay travel guide

Some of the best experiences in Morro Bay include whale, sea otter, harbor seal, sea lion, and coastal bird watching. If you don’t want to wake up early for a boat tour, you can also enjoy a more low-key wildlife-watching experience by walking down to the Morro Bay T-Pier Otter Viewing Area where you will be able to spot plenty of ocean wildlife on your own schedule.

The Embarcadero strip and the protected Morro Bay Estuary provide a safe habitat for ocean wildlife especially sea otters that are endangered in California. At the Morro Bay T Pier, you can see mature and baby otters swim, play, and feed up close.

14. Stroll Through The Elfin Forest Trail In Los Osos

morro bay travel guide

Elfin Forest is a stunning nature preserve in Los Osos that offers incredible opportunities for hiking and wildlife watching. Located next to the Morro Bay Estuary, Elfin Forest Natural Area consists of 90 acres of wilderness and hiking trails .

Elfin Forest Trail is a wonderful place to enjoy a leisurely afternoon walk, breathe in the fresh ocean air, and take in panoramic views of the bay. A designated 1-mile-long trail loops through the Elfin Forest and stops at two scenic viewpoints along the way.

Things-to-do-Morro-Bay-Elfin-Forest-Trail

The Elfin Forest Natural Area is home to many different plants, animals, and ecosystems from marshlands and woodlands to prehistoric sand dunes. There are over 150 different plant species that reside in Elfin Forest, many of which are endangered.

To protect this natural area, a boardwalk was built to keep visitors off sensitive habitats. The Elfin Forest boardwalk is well-maintained and has a few benches throughout for resting and enjoying nature.

Elfin Forest Natural Area is located directly south of the Morro Bay Estuary. It also borders the Los Osos neighborhood which offers several entry points for visitors. This trail travels next to a small residential neighborhood so please keep that in mind when parking and avoid blocking any private houses, driveways, or mailboxes.

15. See Butterflies At Coastal Access Monarch Butterfly Preserve

morro bay travel guide

While Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove is known to be one of the largest monarch butterfly sites in the US, there is a small butterfly preserve in Los Osos that you can visit on your trip to Morro Bay.

The best time to see monarch butterflies in California is in the winter months from November to February. In the spring monarch butterflies start migrating north so if you come outside of this time frame, there might not be many butterflies left and you’ll be walking through an empty eucalyptus grove.

We visited the Coastal Access Monarch Butterfly Preserve in early March and we spotted a few small clusters left of them. Despite only seeing a handful of butterflies, it was a pretty interesting experience and I can only imagine what these groves look like during the peak times!

morro bay travel guide

The Coastal Access Monarch Butterfly Preserve is located at the end of Monarch Lane Street, just a 15-minute drive from Morro Bay. There is some street parking, but it is pretty limited.

There is no fee to visit the Coastal Access Monarch Butterfly Preserve and it does allow dogs. When walking at this preserve be sure to watch your step as butterflies often land on the ground.

Photography Tip: The butterflies often hang out high in the trees. If you want to get any good photos of them, it’s best to bring a zoom lens and a tripod for stability and to eliminate blur when capturing images.

16. Visit Cayucos Town

Waves crashing on a beach at sunset at Cayucos State Beach

Situated just north of Morro Bay, Cayucos is a hidden little gem that most people don’t even know exists! This Central California town is known for its relaxed atmosphere, antique shops, cozy eateries, and beachfront hotels.

One of our favorite places to eat in Cayucos is the Hidden Kitchen which serves both savory and sweet blue corn waffles along with delicious smoothies and other breakfast & lunch items.

If you enjoy fishing,  Cayucos Pier   is an excellent place for fishing and observing marine such as whales, dolphins, and sea lions. Built in 1872, this iconic pier offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and is the perfect spot for taking a sunset stroll.

17. Go For a Walk At Cloisters Community Park

morro bay travel guide

One of the best parts about Morro Bay is all of the outdoor spaces where you can go for a walk near the ocean! One of these places is Cloisters Community Park , a beautiful beachfront park right off Highway 1 .

You can park at the visitor lot and walk on the short pathways that connect with the beach. Dogs on leash are allowed at the park trails up until the sand dues.

This part covers 84 acres of meadows, dunes, wetlands, and beachfront homes. There is also a kid’s park, public restrooms, picnic tables, and a grassy area with views of Morro Rock in the background.

18. Observe Wildlife At Morro Bay State Park Boardwalk

Morro Bay State Park Boardwalk is another wonderful place to go for a serene walk. Situated next to the Morro Bay State Park Campground, this 0.7-mile-long wooden boardwalk travels next to the wetlands, grasslands, and the marina offering excellent views along the way.

If you enjoy bird watching, this estuary is home to over 200 bird species. Along the way, you can stop by Marina Peninsula Vista Point to rest at a bench overlooking Morro Rock and spot wildlife.

19. Stop By Spooner’s Cove

morro bay travel guide

Spooner’s Cove is a stunning beach just south of Morro Bay that you’ll want to visit on your trip! While the beach is somewhat small, it’s fairly secluded and will provide you with lots of privacy away from busy city crowds.

Nearby be sure to stop by the historic Spooner Ranch House that sits on top of a cliff overlooking Spooner’s Cove. Here you can also spend a few days camping at Islay Creek Campground , an ideal place to stay for nature lovers and families who are looking for a peaceful camping getaway on the Central California Coast.

20. Hike The Bluff Trail At Montaña de Oro State Park

Bluff Trail is one of the most beautiful coastal hikes in Central California! It’s located just a 20-minute drive south of Morro Bay and starts near Spooner’s Cove.

Along the 4-mile-long Montaña de Oro Bluff Trail , you can enjoy views of rugged coastal bluffs, unique rock formations, wildlife and stop at scenic overlooks. Unfortunately, this trail does not allow dogs, but there are plenty of other hikes in Morro Bay that do!

Best Things to do in Morro Bay, CA

On the Central Coast of California sits an idyllic waterside town that’s the perfect spot for outdoor adventurers, fine dining lovers, and anyone who enjoys one heck of a view! Morro Bay is frequently called “Three Stacks and a Rock,” nicknamed in honor of the town’s history and beloved landmarks.

The three stacks are in reference to the three smokestacks that loom over the community, built half a century ago for a seaside power plant, which now sit abandoned but stand as a beloved testament to the town’s working-class background. The rock, Morro Rock, is a monument to the other side of Morro Bay – the beautiful nature that surrounds the area.

With so many things to see and do in Morro Bay, you might not know where to begin. So we’ve compiled our list of the absolute best things to do in Morro Bay for you. From sipping wine by the water to watching kites flying overhead, these Morro Bay bucket list recommendations will ensure that you have an incredible time in this sleepy seaside town!

Fun Things to do in Morro, Bay: Kayak around Morro Bay

One of the best things to do in Morro Bay is to get out on the water. And one of the best ways to do that is by going kayaking. Morro Bay boasts plenty of places to rent a kayak on the Embarcadero, but we love heading a little further south to nearby Morro Bay State Park, where you’ll find A Kayak Shack .

If kayaking isn’t for you, you can also rent a paddleboard or a canoe at A Kayak Shack. But no matter what you rent, you can expect to get out on the water and do some exploring. Be sure to check with A Kayak Shack regarding their rental times, which change with the season.

Unique Things to do in Morro, Bay: Kayak around Morro Bay

Paddle your way up toward Morro Rock and take in stunning views while you look out for Morro Bay’s local wildlife. You’ll likely find yourself nearby playful otters, hunting for their next meal or taking a nap among the kelp. Nervous about getting out on the water for your first time? A Kayak Shack partners with Central Coast Outdoors to offer guided tours.

The Half Day Classic provides you with a morning paddle that includes a hike over the sand dunes. With a Short Paddle tour, you’ll skip the dunes and spend your time solely on the water.

And if you’d like to watch the beautiful sunset over Morro Rock, pick the Sunset Paddle tour, which includes hors d’oeuvres and beverages served on the sand dunes. If you’re looking to customize your experience, you can also book a private tour.

2. Look for Otters around Morro Rock

Morro, Bay Bucket List: Look for Otters around Morro Rock

Morro Rock is a State Historical Landmark that was formed about 23 million years ago from the plugs of long-extinct volcanoes. Standing nearly 576 feet tall, Morro Rock is the last peak of the Nine Sisters, which extends from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay. Although the rock was mined on and off until 1963, it’s now a designated bird sanctuary for the peregrine falcon and other bird species.

Must do things in Morro, Bay: Look for Otters around Morro Rock

After grabbing breakfast on the Embarcadero, you can take a scenic walk over to Morro Rock and explore its sandy dunes to look for wildlife. Or you can take an easy beach hike along the Morro Strand Trail through Morro Strand State Beach, which provides you with an incredible view of the rock.

In addition to bird species soaring up above, you’ll spot otters swimming along the shore, sea lions resting on docks, and sea stars in the clear waters. Although you cannot climb this rock as it is a protected area, you can still explore the areas around it.

3. Explore Morro Bay State Park

What to do in Morro, Bay: Morro Bay State Park

On Morro Bay’s northeast edge is Morro Bay State Park, which features a saltwater marsh, lagoon, and natural bay habitat. It provides plenty of opportunities for sailing and fishing at the marina, biking and hiking on the trails, and birdwatching all around.

Morro Bay State Park is one of the best things to do in Morro Bay if you love camping, as the park boasts 135 campsites. And if you’re a golf lover, you’ll love teeing off on the waterfront golf course.

Morro, Bay Things to do: Morro Bay State Park

Morro Bay State Park covers 2,700 acres and includes several areas with unique features, like the Heron Rookery Natural Preserve, where you can spot double-crested cormorants, great egrets, and great blue herons between February and June.

You can also head to Morro Estuary Natural Preserve, where fresh water mixes with ocean tides to provide a diverse ecosystem. From late fall to the end of spring, you’ll also find monarch butterflies roosting in some regions of the park.

4. Visit the Museum of Natural History

Located in Morro Bay State Park is the Museum of Natural History , one of the best things to do in Morro Bay if you’re a fan of history. This museum provides panoramic views of the bay and Morro Rock. Boasting fun and interactive exhibits, the Museum of Natural History will teach you about the area’s natural habitats and how humans have impacted them for centuries.

You’ll learn about cultural history, Native American life in Morro Bay, geology, and oceanography through hands-on activities, rotating exhibits, lectures, and nature walks. Plus, you’ll love that this very natural museum, surrounded by gardens, is perfectly in-line with the beauty of the park it was built in.

5. Stroll along the Embarcadero

Best Things to do in Morro, Bay: Stroll along the Embarcadero

The Embarcadero is Morro Bay’s downtown, harbor-side shopping and dining area, providing you with many of the coolest things to do in Morro Bay. Although you’ll see stunning views of the ocean and Morro Rock from the shore, there are tons of water excursions to choose from here, from glass-bottom boat tours to fishing charters.

The Embarcadero is known for its delicious waterfront dining options. We recommend heading to Blue Sky Bistro Cafe when the sun starts to go down for a beautiful sunset view of Morro Rock. Or head to Rose’s Landing Bar & Grill for specialty cocktails to sip as the sky turns to pink and orange.

You’ll also find many unique shops featuring handmade goods and art for sale created by local artists on the Embarcadero. From high-end clothing boutiques to nautical-themed gift shops, you’re sure to discover souvenirs you can’t get anywhere else.

6. Spend a Day at the Beach

Best Things to do in Morro, Bay: Spend a Day at the Beach

Morro Bay contains hundreds of miles of stunning beaches where you can go for a dip in the water, surf the waves, and picnic in the sand. However, the beaches have very diverse offerings, and you may not want to go in the water during certain times of the year, as Morro Bay can be windy and foggy depending on when you visit.

But whether you go in the water or spend the day looking for wildlife while bundled up, there are many beaches you’ll want to explore. Morro Strand State Beach is the perfect place to spot kite surfers, look for otter pups in spring and summer, and find harbor seals taking a swim.

Cool Things to do in Morro, Bay: Spend a Day at the Beach

If you’re traveling with a dog, you’ll want to head to Toro Beach, which is an off-leash dog beach between the north and south sections of Morro Strand. Morro Rock Beach gives you a gorgeous view of the iconic Morro Rock while you and your on-leash dog can play in the water and explore the sand dunes.

7. Go Wine Tasting

Morro, Bay Bucket List: Go Wine Tasting

Although when we think of wine tasting in California, Napa Valley or Sonoma often come to mind first, Morro Bay boasts plenty of wineries and tasting rooms for the wine lover in your life. On the Embarcadero alone, there are several places for wine tastings. You can spend an afternoon walking between each one, but we highly recommend checking out Chateau Margene , a cozy and dog-friendly tasting room.

If you’re looking for a wine tour, check out The Wine Line , a semi-private tour that delivers you to the doors of the best wineries in the area. If you’re looking to spend a day sipping chardonnay, it’s always safer to plan your transportation in advance, and The Wine Line makes it easy.

Fun Things to do in Morro, Bay: Go Wine Tasting

Not a wine drinker? We recommend taking a quick drive inland for SLO Cider , one of the best hard cider companies around. They have bottled ciders to-go or plenty on tap with unique flavors like lemon-ginger and blood orange.

8. Take a Tiki Boat Tour

Lost Isle Adventures is a family-owned touring company that offers one of the most unique Morro Bay activities. From whale watching adventure boat tours to sunset cruises with a cocktail in hand to private boat rentals, there are many options to choose from when it comes to getting out on the water. But Lost Isle Adventures is best known for its tiki boat tours.

The tiki boat tour, which launches from the Embarcadero, takes you aboard a floating tiki hut for a 45-minute harbor cruise. With Lost Isle Adventures being staffed by life-long sailors who call the Central Coast home, you’re sure to learn things about Morro Bay you never knew before while you look out for Morro Bay’s beautiful wildlife.

Lost Isle Adventures also features a tiki-themed bar, which offers 1950s-style signature tiki cocktails. Filled with exotic rums and juices, you’re bound to find a sweet treat to enjoy on your tour.

Or, for less adventurous drinkers, there are beer and wine selections as well. And when you’re done with your tour, check out the Lost Isle Adventures shop, which specializes in Polynesian wood carvings straight from Bali.

9. Dine on the Water

Fun Things to do in Morro, Bay: Dine on The Water

Morro Bay is known for being a sleepy seaside town that’s perfect for a springtime getaway. But another aspect of Morro Bay that makes it so great to visit is its food scene. Particularly around the Embarcadero and Morro Bay’s downtown area, you’ll find dining delights with an incredible view.

Morro Bay is filled with hidden gems, like Frankie & Lola’s Front Street Cafe , where you’ll find one of the best eggs benedict around. Or Dorn’s Breakers Cafe , a delightful breakfast spot with a view of Morro Rock. For a quieter place with just as beautiful views, check out Bayside Cafe .

But while you can dine waterside at Morro Bay, you can also literally eat on the water with cruises that give you a tour of the gorgeous harbor along with a delicious meal. One of the best options is Chablis Cruises , a 50-foot, two-story riverboat cruise.

They offer Harbor Cruises, complete with their award-winning Bloody Marys and other cocktails; Chowder Cruises, with their award-winning clam chowder and more fresh food options; and Brunch Cruises featuring seasonal and locally-sourced brunch options alongside bottomless mimosas.

Chablis also hosts dinner and brunch events for the holiday seasons throughout the year. However, these events typically book up fast, so be sure to reserve your table early.

10. Eat and Drink at the Avocado Margarita Festival

Must do Things in Morro Bay: Avocado Margarita Festival

We can’t think of anything quite as “California” as an Avocado Margarita Festival , which is easily one of the most unique things to do in Morro Bay. This three-day event is typically held in the fall and takes place in and around Tidelands Park.

Surrounded by stunning views of Morro Bay, you’ll dine on gourmet avocado treats from the best bakers and chefs on the Central Coast. And you’ll wash it all down with eclectic margaritas courtesy of renowned mixologists.

What to do in Morro Bay: Avocado Margarita Festival

Live music will play throughout the festival on the Tidelands stage, as well as another musical showcase that ends Saturday night over at Morro Rock. From picnic movie nights to morning yoga, there’s plenty to do all weekend long. Throughout the festival, you’ll also find one-of-a-kind treasures from local vendors.

If you’d like to experience all this unique festival has to offer, you can grab yourself a VIP pass. This ticket will get you admission into every part of the festival, including the Saturday night concert on Morro Rock, as well as access to the VIP Floating Lounge, which offers complimentary food and non-alcoholic drinks.

11. Admire Kites at the Morro Bay Kite Festival

Best Things to do in Morro, Bay: Morro Bay Kite Festival

In the spring comes a different kind of festival that’s focused on nature and art. This fun-filled, family-friendly event invites you to take in beautiful pieces of art flying over Morro Bay.

Throughout the weekend, you’ll find synchronized dances of team flyers, creating ballets in the sky with smaller kites. You’ll also find one-of-a-kind gigantic kites courtesy of solo pilots.

Cool Things to do in Morro, Bay: Morro Bay Kite Festival

For even more fun for the kids, the festival features a candy drop twice a day, where flyers lift kites full of candy into the air and then release the candy for the kids to gather. Central Coast Funds for Children also gives away 500 free kites for kids to decorate and fly.

Throughout the festival, you’ll find plenty to do in addition to kite flying, courtesy of a diverse group of local vendors. From sweet treats to savory snacks, these vendors offer perfect bites to pick up between your flying sessions. And while you snack, you’ll learn from local non-profits about ways to help keep Morro Bay beautiful.

12. Explore the Morro Bay Maritime Museum

Cool Things to do in Morro, Bay: Morro Bay Maritime Museum

Located on the Embarcadero is a museum that focuses on preserving the maritime history of California. In the 1990s, Brent Roberts assembled a group of people who dedicated themselves to this preservation and called them the Central Coast Maritime Museum Association. The group worked with city leaders to establish a place on the Morro Bay waterfront for a place to keep all this history, and thus the Morro Bay Maritime Museum was born.

This museum is one of the must-do things in Morro Bay to do for history buffs. See the historic tug Alma and learn about what brought World War II to our shores. Or climb aboard the Avalon, one of only two Cold War-era rescue submarines developed by the U.S. Navy and featured in the 1990 film Hunt for Red October and the 2018 film Hunter Killer .

Best Things to do in Morro, Bay: Morro Bay Maritime Museum

The museum is continuing to collect and preserve more boats, like the Monterey-style commercial fishing boat, the Spindrift, a testament to California’s fishing industry. Private tours are available to book in advance.

The museum also hosts several events throughout the year, like Family Fun Day in the fall, which provides tons of fun for the whole family. After watching the Annual Morro Bay Rotary Ducky Derby, you can head to the museum to visit exhibits, build sandcastles, go treasure hunting, participate in sailing activities, and much more. End the day with sea shanties and enthralling stories of being at sea.

13. Stroll through Montaña de Oro State Park

Unique Things to do in Morro, Bay: Montaña de Oro State Park

Nearby Morro Bay in Los Osos is Montaña de Oro State Park, aka “Mountains of Gold.” The park received its name thanks to the golden wildflowers that cover its hills in spring. Here you’ll find rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, coastal plains, flowing streams, stunning canyons, and flower-covered hills, including the 1,347-foot Valencia Peak.

Take a walk along Bluff Trail, which provides you with spectacular views of the Pacific while the ocean breeze runs through your hair. One of the most scenic trails in the area, it’s easy to see why it’s a favorite spot for hikers and photographers alike. Along the trail, you can take a side path down to Corallina Cove, where you can go tide pooling and look for sea stars, mussels, anemones, and more.

While you’re at the park, check out Spooner’s Cove, a secluded beach known for its pebbly sand and unique rock formations. For those who love sleeping under the stars, the park also features plenty of campsites.

14. Walk along the Elfin Forest

Fun Things to do in Morro, Bay: Elfin Forest

Adjacent to the Morro Bay Estuary is the El Moro Elfin Forest, located in Los Osos. This 90-acre area supports more than 200 species of plants, 110 kinds of birds, 22 species of mammals, and 13 species of reptiles. If you’re a nature lover, Elfin Forest is one of the coolest things to do in Morro Bay and well worth the short trek over to Los Osos.

This forest received its name thanks to the short stature of the Coast Live Oaks, despite these trees growing upwards of 50 feet elsewhere. A boardwalk path loop was constructed in 1999 to provide better wheelchair access and protect this sensitive environment, so be sure to stay on the boardwalk when you visit.

From this loop, you’ll take in breathtaking views of the estuary and Elfin Forest’s stunning wildlife and foliage. You’ll walk through seven distinct environment types, each with its own unique flora and fauna.

The Elfin Forest also features three types of walks throughout the year. Third Saturday Walks are docent-led and provide you with opportunities to learn about the forest. Discovery Walks are flexible and focus on the areas of interest for the groups of walkers. Sketch Walks allow you to take a seat in the forest and draw the beauty of the world around you.

15. Take a Tour of Hearst Castle

Must do things in Morro, Bay: Hearst Castle

Located north of Morro Bay in San Simeon, Hearst Castle deserves a top spot on your Morro Bay bucket list for a reason. This monumental masterpiece was built by William Randolph Hearst in 1919 and only continued to grow.

By 1947, when Hearst needed to leave the remote location due to his poor health, he considered the mansion to be unfinished, despite the complex including a twin-towered main building, three guesthouses, and 127 acres of terraced gardens, fountains, and pools. Hearst Castle is also home to an incredible museum of art and antiquities from around the globe.

Reservations are recommended when booking a tour of Hearst Castle. And you have plenty of options when it comes to picking your tour. With so much to see, it’s impossible to see it all in one visit, so the tours are divided up by sections of the grounds. There’s a Grand Rooms Tour, Upstairs Suites Tour, and Cottages & Kitchens Tour.

Morro, Bay Bucket List: Hearst Castle

However, for people most interested in the history of the house, there’s a Hearst and Hollywood Tour about the connection between the house and Hollywood’s Golden Age elite. The Art of San Simeon Tour is where you’ll receive an in-depth look at Heart’s art collection. The Designing the Dream Tour focuses on the decades of planning for the mansion’s construction, while the Julia Morgan Tour is on the architect behind the grounds.

The Evening Tour invites guests to dress in 1930s attire and walk around the house just as Hearst’s guests once did. The Holiday Twilight Tour, offered around the holiday season, showcases the house in a most festive way as you take in the sights of Hearst Castle in winter.

Not all tours are available year-round, so be sure to check what’s available when you book. Because these buildings have many stairs and are quite large, some tours are available for guests who have difficulty walking up and down stairs and for extended lengths of time.

The Embarcadero is the main tourist area and lines the east side of the bay. It is a great walking experience along a working port and eco-tourist destination. A variety of marine life is here, from sea otters to sea lions, and the town is a declared bird sanctuary. Excellent deep sea fishing originates at the north end of the Embarcadero. A public park and boat launch are at the south end. RVs and mobile homes may day-park at either end. There is a giant chess board in the middle of Embarcadero Rd.

Popular surfing locations are to the north on easy access beach from free public parking and across the harbor entry to the north end of the sand spit that forms the west edge of the bay.

You can rent a kayak and explore the south part of the bay, which is one of the larger estuaries on the west coast. A favorite local tradition is to kayak from Morro Bay State Park or Embarcadero docks to the massive sand spit for a picnic.

To the north of town is the Morro Strand State beach which offers additional surfing possibilities and many locals with their dogs in a fairly open uncrowded setting. To the south of the town is Morro Bay State Park which includes an impressive public golf course set in pines on challenging hillsides with amazing views to the ocean and bay. A renovated public campground is available.

Morro Bay is a charming coastal community in San Luis Obispo County of central California. It's a city best defined by its many surrounding natural features. Most prominent is Morro Rock , a staggering 576-foot volcano remnant at the mouth of Morro Bay. This impressive volcanic plug is seen for miles before coming into town and is home to nesting peregrine falcons and many other species of birds.

Morro Bay

Morro Bay's natural charm extends from Morro Rock, with miles of beach to the north and a surrounding designated National Estuary teeming with wildlife. Alongside Morro Rock Beach, one of the best places to appreciate the view is along Morro Bay's main waterfront drag, also known as the Embarcadero . Restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions like the Estuary Nature Center punctuate this coastal hot spot.

Summer often brings a lot of tourists, but the shoulder seasons with cooler temperatures and less crowds are arguably the best time to visit Morro Bay. But no matter the time of year, this fishing town has a laid-back vibe that welcomes tourists. And don't forget to pack the binoculars, as the Audubon Society recognizes Morro Bay as one of the top spots in the world for bird-watching .

Morro Rock is the centerpiece natural attraction of the city, standing approximately 576 feet tall at the mouth of Morro Bay. This ancient volcanic remainder is the largest in a chain of nine peaks known as the Nine Sisters . The next nearest is Black Hill, with a summit accessible from Morro Bay State Park.

Morro Rock is seen from miles away. It was once a prominent landmark for mariners out at sea and is still today an appealing reference point for tourists passing through. And nearly everything to do in Morro Bay includes this impressive rock feature somewhere in sight.

Morro Rock is now a California Registered Landmark and protected Natural Preserve. It's also home to nesting peregrine falcons and is a designated bird sanctuary, so no climbing of the rock is allowed. However, visitors can drive directly to its base and to the adjacent Morro Rock Beach , with rough ocean waves and stunning views of the natural features.

View from Morro Bay T Pier

The entire downtown waterfront includes stunning views of Morro Rock. A few particularly good vantage points include the harborside Anchor Memorial Park and Morro Bay T Pier. These two vantage points often include wildlife in the picture, including sea lions and sea otters.

Morro Bay State Park

Morro Bay State Park offers a variety of things to do outdoors near the heart of the city. Popular activities here include hiking, bird-watching, mountain biking, and renting a canoe or kayak to paddle on the water. A public 18-hole golf course is also operated by the state park, including sweeping views of the bay and the ocean beyond.

The Morro Bay State Park Campground is located close to the marina, with over 130 sites accommodating both tents and recreational vehicles. Coin-operated showers and flushing toilets are throughout the campground. Black Hill is a popular hike leading directly from the upper section of the campground, where interested trekkers climb to one of the best views of Morro Bay and Morro Rock in the region.

The state park's Museum of Natural History is also easily accessible from the campground. Perched atop White's Point within the park, with a stunning view of the bay and nearby Morro Rock, this education center strives to connect visitors to the surrounding natural world. Near the Museum of Natural History, and detailed by the facility, a heron and cormorant rookery make for excellent bird-watching.

Morro Rock Beach

No matter what brings visitors to Morro Bay, they all tend to gravitate toward Morro Rock Beach. That's because this city beach is right at the base of Morro Rock, on its north side. It's hard to not want to get closer to this massive offshore volcanic plug, and the beach itself is wide and inviting and a perfect place to appreciate the ocean.

Visitors reach Morro Rock Beach by heading down Coleman Drive right to the rock's base. The 581-foot formation is protected by a natural preserve, so no climbing is allowed, but the adjacent beach offers plenty of other ways to enjoy the sunny weather.

Alongside up-close views of Morro Rock, the beach also has dunes to explore and plenty of space to lay down a towel. It's a popular place for leisurely beach visits and long beach walks. The entirety of Morro Strand State Beach , stretching all the way to Cayucos, borders Morro Rock City Beach to the north.

Morro Bay National Estuary

The Morro Bay National Estuary encompasses approximately 2,300 acres where freshwater meets the sea. This significant body of brackish water and surrounding watershed are the backbone of the Morro Bay community and an unavoidable part of any visit. Most commonly, visitors enjoy the National Estuary by taking in the lovely views of Morro Bay, often infused with wildlife.

The non-profit Morro Bay National Estuary Program oversees the health of the watershed alongside many collaborative partners. Tourists and interested residents will want to visit the Estuary Nature Center within Marina Square. The nature center also offers kayak tours throughout the estuary.

Sea otters in Morro Bay National Estuary

The Morro Bay National Estuary is a federally protected wildlife haven. Several animals are often seen enjoying the habitat, particularly birds. Most visits also include views of sea lions and sea otters basking in the calm water.

Marina Square shops

The Embarcadero is Morro Bay's main thoroughfare along the bay. Numerous restaurants and shopping opportunities line this charming district, all with views overlooking the water. Restaurants range from casual lunch spots to upscale dining, many with seafood on the menu.

Centennial Plaza is a major landmark in the area, with a giant chessboard and scenic resting spots. Inland from the Embarcadero, more local treasures of the city are along Morro Bay Boulevard .

To the south and adjacent to the Morro Bay National Estuary, Marina Square is a cluster of shopping and dining establishments tourists often gravitate towards. Alongside outdoor dining next to the bay, this charming seaside shopping center also features locally made gifts and apparel. The Estuary Nature Center is also within Marina Park, as well as opportunities to rent boats or sign up for a guided tour.

Morro Strand State Beach

Morro Strand State Beach is a long stretch of sand extending from Morro Rock to the community of Cayucos to the north. It's a popular spot to connect with the ocean with abundant space to spread out a towel.

Sand dunes and wetlands comprise some of the landscape of the park, spanning nearly five miles. This quiet beach is popular with beachcombers, bird-watchers, and anyone looking for a spot to enjoy the ocean. Surfing also tends to draw visitors.

A campground is available at Morro Strand State Beach, with 70 campsites for tents or RVs. The campsites are on the other side of the bluffs from the ocean, but close enough to the water to experience a saltwater mist. Guests at the campground reach the beach with less than a three-minute walk.

Campground at Morro Strand State Beach

Tide pools appear near the north end of the campground during low tide, revealing a dynamic world of sea slugs, urchins, and anemones. And a great view of Morro Rock looms when heading south on the beach from the campground. Head south far enough to reach the base of Morro Rock and Morro Rock City Beach. Here, interpretive information details the volcanic plug's role as a vital nesting habitat.

Montaña de Oro State Park

This mountain of gold and scenic public space is just south of Morro Bay and Morro Bay State Park . The colorful wildflowers that bloom across the landscape in the spring lend the park its name, and the entire area encompasses over 8,000 acres of rugged coastal canyon and beach to explore.

The state park is popular for hikers, backpackers, and photography enthusiasts. The varied terrain is also frequented by mountain bikers, horse riders, and an abundance of wildlife. Campsites are also available in a primitive campground, with nearly 50 sites open to tents or RVs. The park also features walk-in and equestrian campsites.

For a quick visit, Spooner's Cove is one of the most popular beaches in the park thanks to its wide shoreline and intriguing rock formations. For the best views, head along the adjacent Bluff Trail south of Spooner's Cove, offering a wide viewing platform of the coast the entire way. Black Hill Trail

Takes some time away from the waterfront to hike Black Hill Trail when visiting Morro Bay. This popular route starts in Morro Bay State Park , near the group campground, and ascends to a 360-degree view, including Morro Rock and the entire bay.

The route up and down Black Hill Trail is approximately three miles and gains 600 feet of elevation. The uphill is very consistent all the way to the top, giving this hike a moderate rating. But with an easy-to-follow and well-worn path, it's easy to navigate. Hiking poles are recommended to save some strain on the knees.

The view at the top of Black Hill is unbeatable. It's only at the top where a sweeping vista includes the city, Morro Rock, Morro Bay, and the Cabrillo Highway in the other direction. If you're staying at the state park or somewhere nearby, consider bringing up a flashlight for the hike back down after catching the sunset.

El Moro Elfin Forest

This unique forest is on the southeast shore of Morro Bay and features several stunted California Live Oaks. Despite decades of growth, these marvelous trees are rarely over 20 feet tall. It's the proximity to the ocean that stunts this 90-acre forest, and its low surroundings lend a great view of the bay and a unique sense of exploring a miniature world.

It's an approximately three-mile drive from the Morro Bay State Park Campground to the El Moro Elfin Forest. A nearly mile-long boardwalk trail navigates the entire area, enabling access for any and all interested visitors

PISMO BEACH

Pismo Beach is one of the top SLO beaches, located South of Morro Bay at a 25-mile driving distance on Highway 101.

If you are into beach combing, looking for top surfing locations nearby Morro Bay, or just a place to unwind and enjoy the fantastic sunset views, head to Pismo Beach, one of the cool things to do in Morro Bay.

HIKE TO THE TOP OF CASS HILL

If you are looking for a hiking trail along the coast in Morro Bay, hike the Cass Hill trail in the cosy hamlet of Cayucos, a 10-minute drive towards the North of Morro Bay.

Cass Hill Trail, a 3-mile loop, is not on the popular trail list but is a decently maintained trail if you want to hike peacefully with much lesser crowds. This is also among the dog-friendly trails, making this one of the exciting things to do in Morro Bay.

morro bay activities

The trail is moderate and gains an elevation of around 500 feet. You will be greeted with the views of beautiful Cayucos town, the Central Coast and the majestic Morro Rock at a distance. Ensure to carry enough beverages and snacks if you hike in summer.

If you are driving to this, park on the North side of Cass Hill, off Cayucos Drive and Little Cayucos Creek Road.

FUN THINGS TO DO IN MORRO BAY

Check out tidelands park.

One of the fun things to do in Morro Bay is to visit Tidelands park, a two-acre adventurous land towards the Southern End of Embarcadero.

Tidelands Park is popularly known as the Pirate Park among the local kids due to its nautical and pirate-themed ship at the park’s centre. The park is well-maintained, with neatly cut grass and benches around to enjoy the incredible sunset views.

things to do in morro bay this weekend

Although you cannot access the beach from this park, you can still climb up the ship to take in the gorgeous views of sailing boats in the backdrop of Morro Bay.

The park has many interactive sculptures, including an octopus and a whale tail. The park is also a spot for weddings and birthday parties and is one of the favourite picnic areas among the locals. Take the stairs down from the Park to look at the sea otters lazing around.

CLOISTERS PARK

One of the fun things to do in Morro Bay, especially with kids, is to visit Cloisters Park, located in the Cloisters House Subdivision.

The 34-acre park is secluded and has ample amenities, which draws both kids and adults. Kids can play around in the expansive green fields, and parents can stroll on the boardwalk, which offers incredible beach views.

The park also features a biking and cycling path if you want to cycle along the shore, enjoying the gorgeous sunset vistas.

KAYAK OR SUP

Exploring Morro Bay on a Kayak, Canoe, or SUP is one of the popular Morro Bay attractions.

There are many locations on the Los Osos side of the Estuary to rent a Kayak or Canoe which departs from Bay Harobours or Marinas.

I recommend taking a guided tour accompanied by a trained professional for the best Morro Bay experience. They take you along the bay, which has calm waters and is separated by the ocean.

Opt for customised extended tour packages like the sunset package if you are with the family. You can witness the sand-split area which protects the Bay.

It is a delight to Kayak in these freshwaters away from the Sail Boats. You will see much of the local wildlife, making this one of the fun things to do in Morro Bay.

Get a close-up view of colourful coastal birds, otters and sea lions. You might even spot some rare and endangered species.

WATCH A MOVIE AT THE BAY THEATRE

Watching a movie at the Bay theatre is one of the fun things to do in Morro Bay, especially if you are looking to spend some quality time with your loved one.

This theatre is known for its first run of films in the area. It features well-maintained seats and an excellent sound system with a decent screen. So grab your favourite drink and book tickets to enjoy the American cinema experience.

Opening Hours – 3:30 PM to 7 PM from Tuesday to Saturday, 12 PM to 3:30 PM on Sundays.

CHECK OUT LOCAL MARKETS

Farmer’s market and seafood market.

One of the top Morro Bay attractions is the different Farmer’s Market and Seafood Market, which are held on various days of the year, depending on the season.

MAIN STREET FARMER’S MARKET

Just a few meters away from the Embarcadero and the Morro Bay Harbour, you will witness the Main Street Farmer’s Market.

Go around the two blocks of the market on the main street and Morro Bay Boulevard, and you will be greeted with the aroma of freshly produced olive oils, baked bread, homemade jams and other local products.

9 Amazing Experiences In Beautiful Morro Bay, California

morro bay travel guide

  • Destinations
  • United States

Not only does Morro Bay feature one of the California Central Coast’s most iconic rock formations, but the small town in San Luis Obispo County also boasts a fun oceanside atmosphere, proximity to two state parks and a state beach, and stellar viewings of sea life.

Add to that Morro Bay’s lively restaurant scene and plentiful ocean-themed shops, and you have the ideal spot for an active, yet relaxing, beachside stay.

After I had admired Morro Bay’s namesake rock from afar on several previous trips along the Pacific Coast Highway, I decided to return on a December road trip for a weekend stay. Along with virtually endless opportunities for viewing “the rock,” I was delighted to find winter temperatures in the 60-degree-Fahrenheit range, abundant sunshine, and activities ranging from seaside hiking and shell shopping to ocean kayaking.

Located about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco , Morro Bay is also within a quick drive of the university city of San Luis Obispo and the outstanding wine country in Paso Robles – making it a convenient stop on a visit to the California Central Coast.

Here are nine of the best experiences to have in beautiful Morro Bay.

View of Morro Rock from Morro Bay

1. Take In Views Of Morro Rock

This one is a given: If you are in Morro Bay, the 576-foot-high Morro Rock is virtually guaranteed to be front and center. Whether you are eating lunch on an oceanside patio, strolling the charming Morro Bay Embarcadero, or paddle boarding on the bay’s blue waters, you can expect to have a stellar view of the enormous volcanic plug that is synonymous with Morro Bay.

Still, there are a few places where the view seems to be especially great. I loved the pretty scene at Tidelands Park , a 2-acre city park at the south end of the Embarcadero. There, you can sit on benches surrounded by beautifully landscaped flowers and trees and gaze out at Morro Rock in the distance – often with an image of the rock reflected on the calm surface of the water.

Another favorite area for views of the rock is on the northern end of the Embarcadero, where you will find the lovely Anchor Memorial Park as well as otter viewing areas and plenty of restaurants with seaside patios.

Morro Rock is a State Historic Landmark and Morro Bay’s most distinguishing feature. It certainly serves to set the community of about 10,000 people apart from other beach towns along the coast.

Pro Tip: In addition to the great views, Tidelands Park has a number of amenities that are great for residents and visitors alike. There is a pirate ship and sand-play area for kids, picnic areas with barbecues for families, and a fish-cleaning station for fishermen. The park also has public restrooms that are conveniently located within walking distance of the shops and restaurants.

Morro Strand State Beach

2. Explore Morro Strand State Beach

Windswept sand and sea await at the Morro Strand State Beach , a lovely 3-mile stretch of oceanfront located on the northern end of Morro Bay. The spot is a delight, from the wide sandy beach to the flowering ice-plant succulents growing on the dunes to the long-billed curlew birds scampering in and out of the tide.

Overlooking Estero Bay and the distant Morro Rock, the state beach offers endless views of the ocean and surrounding area and is a great spot for long walks and beachside picnics.

Pro Tip: If you plan to go in the water, be sure to check for notifications of shark warnings. Though rare, shark attacks on surfers have been known to occur in the Morro Strand area.

Sunset over Morro Rock at Morro Bay

3. Experience A Morro Bay Sunset

Although a sunny day is wonderful in Morro Bay, a cool evening as the sun goes down is perhaps even more magical. As I wandered the Embarcadero on my first evening in town, I couldn’t keep my eyes off the horizon, where the setting sun was casting brilliant oranges and pinks onto the sea and providing a vivid backdrop for the hulking Morro Rock.

There are many outdoor places along the Embarcadero to take in the sunset, but I loved watching it at the boat dock near Anchor Memorial Park, where a large commemorative anchor framed the rock against the multi-colored sky.

You can also choose to take in the sunset over dinner, at great dining spots like the House of JuJu or the patio at Dorn’s Original Breakers Café . Or, if you’d like to have an even closer encounter with the sunset, consider an evening cruise at Morro Bay Landing .

Kayaks lined up in Morro Bay

4. Kayak Or Paddle Board The Bay

With its bay waters protected from the open ocean by a 4-mile-long sandspit, Morro Bay offers a great place for water sports like kayaking and paddle boarding. The calm waters are said to be good for beginners, as well as expert kayakers and paddle boarders.

You will notice countless businesses along the Embarcadero offering kayaks for rent. Among the choices are A Kayak Shack and Rock Kayak Co . Both places also offer rentals of paddle boards.

Giovanni's Fish Market & Gallery

5. Try Clam Chowder On The Boardwalk

If you’re looking for a casual lunch or dinner, be sure to check out the clam chowder at Giovanni’s Fish Market & Galley , located on the northern end of the Embarcadero.

Giovanni’s caters to tourists and locals with its outdoor window for ordering and large outdoor patio overlooking the water, and the bustling spot more than delivers with delicious chowder with a flavorful, creamy broth and tender pieces of clam. For me, a bowl of chowder served in a Styrofoam cup with oyster crackers was the perfect pick-me-up on a cool night.

A bonus: Giovanni’s patio not only offers shelter from the brisk sea breeze but also has stellar views of Morro Rock at sunset.

Montaña De Oro State Park

6. Hike Montaña De Oro State Park

Located 10 miles southwest of Morro Bay is the gorgeous oceanside California State Park, Montaña de Oro . The park, which is situated right along the Pacific Coast, is famous for its gorgeously varied terrain – from rugged cliffs and sandy beaches to tidepools and coastal plains.

Visitors can choose from a number of hikes, including the 3.4-mile out-and-back Bluff Trail for a scenic and easy walk along the park’s coastline; the moderate 4.5-mile round-trip Valencia Peak Trail, which offers sweeping views of the region; and the 6-mile round-trip Islay Creek trail for an easy canyon walk.

Pro Tip: Morro Bay is also home to another oceanside state park, the Morro Bay State Park , located between town and the Montaña de Oro State Park. The Morro Bay State Park features lagoon and natural bay habitat and offers opportunities for sailing, fishing, hiking, and bird watching. It also has a colorful marina and an 18-hole public golf course that overlooks the bay.

The Shell Shop in Morro Bay

7. Shop The Quaint Stores

Walk into virtually any of the shops in Morro Bay, and you will immediately sense the ocean vibe. From fine art galleries offering beautiful ocean scenes to souvenir shops selling totes and flip-flops to surf shops offering boards and wetsuits, Morro Bay’s business areas have the ocean-town scene covered.

For quintessential beach shops, check out the Shell Shop with its dizzying array of seashells or Carousel Taffy with its myriad saltwater taffy flavors. Morro Bay also offers numerous fine art galleries. Check out a range of local artists at the Art Center Morro Bay .

Otters on Morro Bay

8. Enjoy The Sea Life

Throughout the year, visitors are entertained by Morro Bay’s population of sea otters that congregate on rocks within easy view of the town’s shops and restaurants. Known to be among the most fascinating of the animals of the Pacific Ocean, the otters can be heard chirping and cooing as they paddle through the water near the numerous otter-viewing spots along the Embarcadero.

The area is also home to a large variety of migratory birds that favor the Morro Bay Estuary for its abundance of food available. The birds of the estuary include various groups, such as shorebirds like curlews, godwits, willets, and sandpipers; wading birds such as snowy egrets, great egrets, and great blue herons; plunging birds like brown pelicans, terns, and kingfishers; diving birds like mergansers, loons, and cormorants; and surface feeders such as brant geese, white pelicans, and ducks.

Paso Robles near Morro Bay

9. Day Trip To Wine Country

In just over 30 minutes, visitors to Morro Bay can leave the seashore behind and head into the rolling hills of one of California’s premier wine regions. Located about 32 miles northeast of Morro Bay, Paso Robles makes for a delightful day trip.

Boasting more than 200 wineries, Paso Robles is known for its world-class wines that include varietal Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rhone-style selections. It also has a quaint downtown with dozens of tasty dining choices, a dynamic craft beer scene, stylish shops, and a number of olive groves producing subtly spicy olive oils.

Whereas Morro Bay is all about taking in big sea views and soaking up the sun, Paso Robles offers a classic California wine experience in a laid-back atmosphere.

For more ideas about what to do in Paso Robles, see How To Spend A Day in Paso Robles and 8 Must-Visit Wineries In Paso Robles, California .

Pro Tip: With average high temperatures hovering in the 60s and low 70-degree range all year long, Morro Bay is a true year-round destination. January through May post temperatures in the low 60s, while June through August has average highs in the high 60s. The warmest months in Morro Bay are September and October when the average highs reach the 69-to-70-degree range.

12 Amazing Things To Do In Morro Bay, California (And Outdoorsy)

morro bay travel guide

July 10, 2021 //  by  Ciara //   9 Comments

While living in beautiful Santa Barbara for several years, Evan and I found a multitude of charming destinations throughout the Central Coast. Ojai to the south is a quirky, artsy mountain getaway full of retreats and vegan eats. While Ventura and Oxnard feature more big city fun with expansive beaches, a great bar scene, and one of my favorite food festivals, the Salsa Festival. To the north of Santa Barbara you’ll find many mystical and magical towns such as the bustling sand dunes of Pismo Beach, the hot springs of Avila Beach, the quaint and quiet Atascadero, and one of my favorite weekend escapes–Morro Bay.

Morro Bay is charming small town located about 107 miles from Santa Barbara, and about 14 miles from San Luis Obispo. One thing I love about this beach is, it’s off-the-beaten path and a great destination for those seeking a more intimate getaway. If you’re planning a trip to the Central Coast, I highly recommend adding Morro Bay. It can easily be experienced in a day or two. This post will give you some great options for the best things to do in Morro Bay!

First thing to do in Morro Bay — Visit Morro Rock

smiling at the beach

Morro Rock is a giant mound of volcanic remains. In fact, it’s the last evidence of a once mighty volcano that has long since died out. Now it’s a beautiful and inspiring landmark! The rock is also now home to many local birds, lizards, and other wildlife.

Don’t get any ideas about climbing to the top! This area is protected by the Morro Rock State Preserve. It keeps the nesting sites of thousands of birds (including peregrine falcons!) safe from human intrusion. It’s also a sacred site to the local tribes, so be sure to be respectful of the land.

There are lengthy boardwalks at the area in front of the rock, giving you plenty of views to enjoy. There are also a multitude of plaques with information about the wildlife and some of the history of the site. I highly recommend stopping here first to connect with the rich history of this beautiful beach-side town.

Explore Morro Bay State Park

Visiting the Morro Bay State Park is a fun thing to do in Morro Bay

The harbor and bay are dazzling natural spaces, crafted over millions of years by volcanic activity and erosion. The town of Morro Bay sits right in the middle of the Pacific Flyway, a path of seasonal feeding for more than 100 species of migratory birds. To preserve the grasslands, estuary, marsh area, and other natural resources, the Morro Bay State Park was established in 1934.

This expansive park now boasts 2,700 acres of land. It features a natural history museum, a boardwalk through the marshy land, non-public sand dunes, a golf course, and a popular campground. Here you can experience the more wilder side of Morro Bay, stroll the boardwalk or a have a picnic by the water! If you’re planning a picnic read this post for some easy lunch ideas and snacks to enjoy out.

In fact, the views from here are incredible!

The park itself could be an entire day trip based on the hiking trails alone! One of the best hikes is venturing to the top of Black Hill for an stunning view of the park, the estuary, and the town of Los Ossos. Be sure to check the state park website to best plan your hikes.

Go kayaking or stand up paddle boarding

kayaking at the beach

While the Morro Bay State Park is gorgeous, kayaking or paddle boarding are excellent ways to experience the state park from a different perspective. The waters of Morro Bay are teeming with life, showing the true potential for fun water adventures . You can explore the channels, harbor and get close to the magnificent bay which make Morro Bay so unique.

We love kayaking, and think it’s personally one of the best ways to see the aquatic life up close. Because you never know what you’ll see! We’ve seen elephant seals before and tons of fish. Plus, it’s also a great way to relax and connect with nature.

Kayak Shack located on the harbor and great place to rent kayaks or paddle boards.

Watch the ocean wildlife

a sea otter in the ocean

The estuary of Morro Bay offers the opportunity to view the natural and alluring wildlife along the coast. Here you’ll find a plethora of otters, sea lions, seals, and a vast diversity of bird species that visit the area. Bring your snacks, relax and enjoy watching the wildlife! There, we’ve witnessed otters tending to their young and giant pelicans diving from the blue skies.

If you want to see more wildlife head north up the coast to Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery — the location of the largest gathering of mating elephant seals in the world. You can often hear the elephant seals before you can see them as the males make large trumpeting noises in competition for female attention.

Get there early, as the afternoon brings swarms of crowds! Also, the prime birthing season for the mothers is in January, so … if you want to see drool and awwwwww worthy “puppy” seals or baby seals, consider visiting during this time.

Ramble along Embarcadero

the docks at Morro Bay

Embarcadero is the hot spot in town. It’s filled with wonderul local businesses, refreshing ice cream, and a multitude of gift shops filled with unique trinkets perfect for any souvenirs. Lesiurely stroll through and say hello (aka grab a bag and fill it up) to delicious salt water taffy. Then sit down and grab a meal at one of the many resturants on the main street.

I still remember the first time I visited with family. I was awestruck by the bright colors, sounds, and artistry of the downtown shops in Morro Bay.

What makes Morro Bay unique, however, is how inventive and homely these small businesses are. The family-owned atmosphere really shines through, and there are so many wonderful gems along the walkways of this main street. Below is a list of some special and unique places to visit.

Things to do in Morro Bay’s Embarcadero :

Things to do in Morro bay include fishing

Visit Garden Gallery

This local nursery is the embodiment of whimsy, magic, and color. Garden Gallery has been serving the community all their garden art needs since 1974. Inside the garden explore the fascinating art made from local materials, sculptures and waterfalls. There’s also numerous indoor pieces as well.

This is an excellent spot to pick up a unique souvenir. You’ll be supporting a small business and they also have a gift shop alongside the functional garden center. From plants to sculptures, from furniture to pottery, there is something for almost everyone to enjoy.

Buy fresh fish at Giovanni’s Fish Market

The bustling heart of Morro Bay, this lively fish market is an absolute must-see during your time on the Embarcadero. Giovanni’s is a great source to purchase locally sourced and sustainably harvested seafood. It also sells well non-local (but from nearby) fresh seafood as well.

Having served hungry seafood lovers for 35 years, Giovanni’s not only offers to sell you fresh seafood, but also offers a great dining option to try that seafood in their attached restaurant. Crab, abalone, oysters, shrimp, and even sushi is all at play here! It’s prepared wonderfully and cooked for maximum flavor. With a commitment to freshness and sustainability, Giovanni’s is a popular spot for good reason.

Take in a sunset dinner at Tognazzinis

Tognazzinis Dockside Restuarant is a family owned and operated restaurant and a local favorite. The mermaid on the storefront beckons hungry travelers inside to an enthralling menu of local catches. As stated on the website, “ we offer locally caught seafood whenever possible, in support of Morro Bay’s historic commercial fishing fleet. As part of that fleet, Captain Mark knows seafood well and insists on the highest quality for YOU, his customer. Our facilities allow us to receive and process seafood directly from the boat, ensuring quality control from the time of landing to the time of your purchase. ”

If that isn’t commitment to quality, then it doesn’t exist! In fact, the restaurant is directly connected with a 38 foot fishing vessel that will provide the seafood directly to your plate.

Having eaten at Toganazzinis several times, I can confirm that the kitchen serves up amazing food that does not disappoint. You can taste the freshness, quality, and attention to detail in every bite to the very last.

Run wild at Tidelands Playground ( things to do in Morro Bay for big kids )

relaxing at the park

This spot is for those with kids ( or for those big kiddos ) looking for a place to let off some steam. Tidelands Playground is a charming public park that is most notable for having several concrete sculptures of whale tails, and having a great view of the harbor. It even has a model galleon ship for kids to explore.

If you’re searching for a spot to watch the sunset, Tidelands Playground is difficult to beat — as the sunset is stunning here!

Other great spots on the Embarcadero:

  • Giant Chessboard
  • Anchor Memorial Park
  • Morro Bay Maritime Museum
  • Morro Bay T pier (best place to view the otters)

Picnic at Morro Strand State Beach

Picnicking at the Morro Strand State Beach

Morro Strand State Beach — established in 1937 and in 1988 it consolidated two parks — offers unparalled views of Morro rock and the pristine surrounding coastline. Inside the State Beach you’ll find picnic benches, campgrounds, and miles of beach hosting a variety of coastal environments. This includes unqiue dunes, and dune wetland communities.

Lounge in the sun, or have some active downtime ( yoga , running, swimming, etc.) soaking in the atmosphere.

Due to its location near Morro Rock and the local wind patterns, Morro Strand State Beach is a popular spot to enjoy surfing, windsurfing, kiting and other activities including fishing. It’s common to find the beach littered with active beachgoers seeking to make the most of this public beach.

Also, the Morro Strand State Beach is another amazing spot to watch the sunset in Morro Bay!

Explore Montaña de Oro State Park

Considered by many to be one of the finest state parks, Montaña De Oro is a special place on the central coast. Featuring over 8,000 acres and 7 miles of shoreline, this stunning park is one of the largest state parks in California. Spectacular views, fresh breezes, and the sound of the pounding surf add up to invigorating, memorable visits and exhilarating hikes. A historical, cultural, geological, and ecological wonder, Montaña de Oro is a must visit while in Morro Bay.

Montaña de Oro State Park is an outdoor activities paradise. Visitors come year round for hiking, jogging, cycling, horse back riding, camping, and surfing. Families love to visit to explore the tide pools, watch for birds and other wildlife, and enjoying a picnic at the picturesque Spooner’s Cove.

Also, the park is also full of diversity. Starting from Spooner’s Cove — a beach surrounded by entrancing rock formations — there are trails that stretch all the way up to the highest point in the park, Alan Peak, which stands at 1649 feet in elevation! The park has beaches, canyons, grasslands, wetlands, and massive sand dunes.

In fact, the park is one of the best places to see a massive wildflower bloom in the spring months. Montaña de Oro is a park full of wonder and adventure, and making it one of the best things to do while in Morro Bay.

Take a tour of Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle is a day trip from Morro Bay

William Randolph Hearst named this site “La Cuesta Encantada,” Spanish for The Enchanted Hill. Hands down, Hearst Castle lives up to its name. This mansion on top of a hill was once the home of one of the wealthiest and most opulent men in America, a getaway magnet for the rich and famous alike. The parties and happenings within these grounds inspired several scenes in “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald and the magic of those times still permeates the mansion.

Today preserved by the state parks association, the massive abode is part tourist attraction, part art museum. Hearst Castle will draw you in with stunning Spanish Gothic and Baroque architecture, a swimming pool inlaid with gold (seriously, Hearst was really rich), and Prohibition Era wine cellar, with classic European art displayed throughout.

Hearst purchased thousands of pieces to decorate his castle, and many of the pieces originally came from Europe. The collection still has amazing Spanish, Italian, French, and even ancient Egyptian pieces. The art and architecture of Hearst Castle only add to the magical and surreal atmosphere of the mansion.

Hearst Castle is a popular thing to do near Morro Bay

During the tour guests are guided through the private airport Hearst built to fly in guests from around the world, his former zoo that had a menagerie of exotic animals, the stunning Neptune Pool, and given access to the incredible views that lead Hearst to select this site.

We absolutely loved our visit, and it was the perfect day trip from Morro Bay. We spent the day exploring the castle, then grabbed dinner at romantic and tasty restuarant in San Luis Obispo.

You can find more info about tours, the history of the site, and more here .

More thoughts about things to do in Morro Bay

hiking is a popular thing to do in Morro Bay

Morro Bay is a surprising little beach town, offering an abundance of activities. With numerous state parks and hiking trails, this town is a special place within the wildlife of the Californian ecosystem. In fact, the Audubon Society lists Morro Bay as one of the best locations for bird watching in the world!

From fresh seafood fish markets and restaurants, fun souvenir shops, kayak rentals, and so much more draw crowds to the Embarcadero.

When is the best time to visit Morro Bay

The coolness of the ocean keeps the summer temperatures down, making it an attractive escape from the regular California heat. Honestly, anytime of year is a great time to visit as the temperature here is mild. Plan to pack a jacket as temperatures do drop in the evening from the ocean breeze.

Morro Bay may be small, but it is jammed packed with adventure filled weekend. Be sure to add this amazing beach town to your summer road trip itinerary and enjoy!
