The Best Tool Kits for Motorbikes | Helpful Tips

use motorcycle tools

It’s a good idea to have a motorcycle tool kit somewhere on your bike just in case something happens. With the right tools you can avoid being stranded or having to call for a motorcycle tow.

However, most breakdowns and issues can be avoided with proper motorcycle maintenance. This means regularly inspecting your bike, having it serviced regularly, and following the recommended maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual.

You may have noticed that your motorbike already comes with a tool kit. This is great to have, although it doesn’t always come with everything you need for basic repairs and maintenance.

With our recommendations above, you’ll be able to find a motorcycle tool kit that’s properly equipped. Most of these should help you perform bigger jobs and fix minor issues that can get you going on your way.

It’s also possible that you can put together your own tool kit with whatever you have at home or by buying new tools. The drawback to this is that it can be more expensive than a kit that comes with everything already included.

Whether you’re heading out on a motorcycle tour, using your bike for motorcycle commuting, or just spending time wrenching in the garage, you never know when you’ll need a fully equipped tool kit. Save yourself the hassle now and pick up one of these sets so that you have it when you need it.

Types of Motorcycle Tool Kits

basic car maintenance tools

Rollup Tool Kit

Rollup tool kits are small, portable, and can be easily stored on your bike. They’re designed to roll up in a small pouch that contains the essential tools for basic motorcycle maintenance and repairs.

The main drawback to this type is that they don’t come with as many tools as other types of tool kits. Thankfully, the easy storage and portable design more than makes up for the drawback of tool availability.

Hard Case Toolbox

The motorcycle tool kits that come in a hard case typically are fully of different types of tools. Everything is stored in a durable and weatherproof plastic storage case.

This is the kit you would probably want to be using at home. It’s bigger, bulky, and can be heavy so it’s not ideal to bring with you on the road.

The advantage of this type is that it comes with a wide range of different tools. This makes that idea for maintenance, upgrades, or any motorcycle repairs that need to be done on your bike.

Motorcycle Multi-Tool

It’s not a bad idea to carry around a motorcycle multi-tool, especially if you’re not bringing a tool kit with you. This is also a good tool for bikes that don’t have any extra space for a tool kit.

A multi-tool is an all-in-one device that comes with a number of different tools attached. They typically include screwdrivers, socket, wrenches, hex keys, and other practical tools, all in a small, compact unit.

Having a multi tool can be used for basic maintenance and emergency repairs. They’re small enough that you should never leave home without one, especially if you’re not bringing a kit with you.

Features to Look For

Included tools.

Each motorcycle tool kit is different than the rest. However, there are certain tools that should be included when it comes to repair on your bike, especially in an emergency.

Look for basic kits that come with Allen wrenches, flathead screwdriver, pliers, and an adjustable wrench. It’s also not a bad idea to have a tire repair kit, zip ties, a flashlight, and battery cables.

If you do your own basic maintenance, you’ll know which tools are the most important to have. Make sure you include these in the kit so that they’re readily available if you ever happen to need them.

Another feature to consider is the quality of the best motorcycle tool kits you’re looking at. Typically, spending your money gets you a better quality kit, which means the tools are going to last longer.

Some of the cheaper, portable motorcycle tool kits use flimsy tools. These aren’t reliable and it’s possible for them to break after just a few uses.

It’s a better idea to invest in a tool kit with quality tools that will help you if you get stuck on the side of the road. It also sucks having to replace something when you’re halfway through your maintenance.

One more thing to consider is the overall size of the tool kit you’re planning on carrying on your bike. If your bike doesn’t have a lot of storage space, you’ll want to avoid a large, heavy, and bulky kit.

For smaller bikes, going with a roll-up pouch or a portable motorcycle tool kit is the best idea. Otherwise, you can leave a fully stocked kit in your garage for whenever you need to work on your bike.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should be included in a motorcycle tool kit.

Everything you need if your bike breaks down should be included in the tool kit. This would be all the tools required for both basic repairs and preventive maintenance .

Whether you’re making your own or buying one online, all of the best motorcycle tool kits will come with a similar set of practical tools. These would include wrenches, a screwdriver, pliers, hex keys, Allen wrenches, spark plug sockets for changing spark plugs , zip ties, electrical tape, and ratchets.

This is just a basic list of recommended tools. Depending on your bike there may be other tools and accessories you need, such as spare bolts, that would be ideal to ride with.

Tire puncture repair kits are something else worth considering adding to your tool set for repairing a motorcycle flat fire . Also, if your bike is suffering from any recurring problems, carry the proper tools and necessary parts for any roadside repairs.

Are Motorcycle Tool Kits Expensive?

Better quality tool kits with a larger assortment of tools tend to cost more. Cheaper tool kits are available, although the tools might be poor quality and not everything required for basic maintenance and repairs is included.

The better quality, more expensive sets will come with a wide range of tools and some additional extras. Along with a flashlight, zip ties, and electrical tape, better quality sets also come with carrying pouches for easier storage and organization.

Don’t forget to get a motorcycle tire repair kit as well. These can be helpful if you happen to get a flat tire or puncture when you’re out riding.

Do Motorcycle Tool Kits Fit Under the Seat?

This depends on the motorcycle and size of kit that you’re using. Not all motorcycles have space underneath the seat for storage.

If that’s the case, consider using a motorcycle tank bag , motorcycle top box, or storing the tools in your motorcycle saddlebags . You can also stash the kit in your motorcycle backpack if you’re wearing one while riding.

Smaller kits are best suited for shorter rides and local day trips. Bigger kits are better for longer trips, bikes with issues, and if you’re someone wrenching on your bike at home.

The Best Motorcycle Tool Kits For DIY Home & Roadside Wrenching

Best Motorcycle Tool Kits 0 Hero

By: Tim Huber Published: Aug 15, 2023

Though motorcycles serve as a means from getting from A-to-B just like any other mode of transportation, we tend to have a much more personal, sentimental relationship with our two-wheelers than we do the other rides in our garage. As such, a great many motorcyclists gravitate towards doing their own maintenance and wrenching on their bikes. Furthermore, unlike cars with spatially-restrictive engine bays, motorcycles afford easy access to the lion’s share of their systems and components, making them incredibly conducive to DIY upkeep and labor.

Affording the ability to get up and running again should you breakdown on the side of the road, tool kits can be literal life-savers. Though, with extremely-limited storage space on the majority of most  production motorcycle models , it can be tricky picking out a tool kit that’s both robust enough to sort out most common mechanical gremlins, and compact enough to lend itself to motorcycle travel. With this in mind, we’ve generated this handy list of the best motorcycle tool kits currently on the market in which we’ll be delving into our picks for the latest and greatest options available, along with what to look for when shopping and tips on how to piece together your own mobile moto tool kit from scratch.

What To Consider When Buying A Motorcycle Tool Kit

No matter your bike, budget, or experience wrenching, there are a few common elements to keep an eye out for when shopping for a moto tool kit. Below, we’ll touch on some of the more important elements to take into account when in the market for tools.

Overall Quality:  For the uninitiated, reading about toolset specs and descriptions can feel like trying to decipher a foreign language, though even the most novice of wrenches can get a basic understanding of a kit’s quality by asking some of the following questions. What material(s) and construction technique(s) were used to manufacture them? Are the tool’s moving components sealed and/or guided by ball-bearings? Does the manufacturer stand behind the tools with any  kind of warranty ?

Functionality:  Another enormously important aspect to take into consideration when shopping for a tool kit is the overall function and utility offered by each respective kit. This means thoroughly checking into a given kit’s number of included tools and said tools’ number of functions.

Overall Value:  This area is more or less determined by coupling a kit’s function and utility with its price and quality. And there is a wide range of value and quality when it comes to toolsets, with some offering much better bang for your buck than others. For more precise instruments or diagnostic equipment, we don’t recommend trying to take the budget route, though, for basic hand-tools and the like, there’s nothing wrong with going with a more affordable set.

Brand:  While most wrenches and tools probably look very similar to the outside observer, anyone that’s spent their fair share of time spinning a spanner is likely abundantly aware of the immense difference in quality between a tool from Snap-On and a tool from Harbor Freight. Purchasing a kit from a more reputable brand does admittedly come at a significant financial premium, though the investment really does pay for itself over time, as the more high-end tools on the market really are built to last a lifetime. If you’re unfamiliar with this product space, it’s well worth your time to read up on some of the more popular brands to get a better sense of where they stand in the industry.

Tool Rolls Vs. Tool Kits

The Pros & Cons Of DIY Versus Preassembled Tool Kits

There are various benefits and drawbacks of buying a preassembled tool kit versus purchasing a tool roll that you custom-load with wrenches, drivers, and other hand tools. Below, we’ll briefly explore some of the main pros and cons of both categories.

Preassembled Moto Tool Kits: Having spent decades manufacturing the actual tools themselves, tool manufacturers tend to have a pretty top-notch understanding of what items to bundle together to yield the best, most robust, yet compact kits. These not only include a curated selection of hand tools for performing basic tasks, but are also sold with a convenient case for easy two-wheeled travel. So, whether you require SAE or metric items, the below list of pre-assembled tool kits will almost certainly include a kit that jives with your needs.

Motorcycle Tool Rolls: Chances are that nobody knows your bike and its faults better than you. As a result, you can piece together  a custom moto  tool kit to specifically address the exact problems that your bike is most prone to suffering from suffers from. Each of the tool rolls below provides a stellar means of accommodating a hand-picked selection of tools for your two-wheeled travels.

Metric Vs. SAE

Standard Moto Sizing 101

Mechanics tools  are sold in two basic varieties; standard (also known as “SAE,” short for “Society of Automotive Engineers”) and metric. Standard tools are measured in sizes using fractions of inches as where metric tools are measured in millimeters. Unsurprisingly, most motorcycles manufactured in the United States are compatible with SAE tools as where most bikes made in Japan, Europe, or anywhere else outside the US typically employ metric sizing. Some bolts can be adjusted using both metric and SAE sockets, though the fit won’t be exact and one runs the risk of stripping a bolt. You’ll want to figure out which style your bike uses before making your purchase.

On top of knowing whether your bike uses SAE or metric tools, it’s also wise to look into the exact tools needed for performing basic maintenance tasks on your exact make and model. As an example, my 2007 Suzuki GSX-R600 requires a torque wrench for performing oil changes. Because of this, I know to either include one of these in my kit or just be privy to the fact I’ll need one for specific jobs.

Supplementary Considerations

Additional Tips & Areas To Consider When Buying A Moto Tool Kit

Regardless of what type of bike you ride, its age, make, model, or what kind of tools it’s compatible with, there are a few general tricks that can benefit just about every rider. Just like with the actual tool kits themselves, these items enormously increase your ability to remedy most basic maintenance jobs and roadside repairs and should be carried alongside your main tool kit if possible.

This includes products like J.B. Weld, zip-ties, and duct tape. Being armed with a comprehensive manual from Clymer or Haynes is also highly recommended by most seasoned riders, as it clearly conveys how to perform just about any basic roadside maintenance job you could imagine. Lastly, even if you consider yourself to be a generally handy person, wed’ still urge you to get aquatinted with your tools in the comfort and safety of your driveway or garage.

The overall quality and construction of these tools are pretty much second to none — as one would expect from Snap-On. Like the above Snap-On item, this 33-piece set does carry a fairly exorbitant MSRP, though you really do get what you pay for — as countless mechanics can attest to.

Included Items: 33 Carrying Case: Nylon Size: Metric & SAE

Mobile mechanic: Best portable and onboard toolkits

Best portable toolkits

There are times when you need some tools with you on a ride. It might be a day out or a long tour but somewhere along the line you might need a portable and onboard motorcycle toolkit to do a little fettling.

We’re not talking about a full-on service or repair here but perhaps you need to pop one or two bits of bodywork off to check a level or re-route some wiring.

Maybe you need to connect or disconnect an accessory from the battery. Perhaps you need to make some repairs to your camping gear. Something that will mean more than your bike’s original tool kit can offer.

Related: Best socket sets for motorcycle owners

In any of these cases, a portable and onboard motorcycle toolkit will be invaluable. You won’t be able to remove the rear wheel or change a spare plug, for example but you will be able to undo screws or the battery terminals. You’ll also be able to trim guy ropes or get boy scouts out of horses hooves…

Whether you’re after an all-in-one multi tool or a more conventional – yet small and portable – toolkit, here are some good portable and onboard motorcycle toolkit options to take with you.

adventure bike tool kit

The Ultimate Adventure Bike Tool Kit

Here’s how to pack an adventure bike tool kit for a motorcycle trip, tour or even a round the world adventure. You’ll find advice, tips, info and all the tools, spares and equipment we carry and use on our RTW trip here.

Ultimate adventure bike tool kit

Words of Dakar Rally wisdom

Dakar Rally Racer, Simon Pavey once showed me the tool kit he uses on the Dakar – and it’s tiny. He once fitted a new engine with his kit and can fix pretty much anything on the bike with it because he has already done so. He’s practised with it, taken his bike apart and put it back together, and anything he didn’t use he didn’t take.

His other bit of invaluable advice was not to tighten anything up on your bike using a tool that isn’t in your kit, there’s no point tightening the rear axle spindle up with a huge bar if you’ve only got a ¾ inch driver in your tool kit to undo it with.

Remembering those pearls of wisdom will really help when packing your kit as knowing what tools to take can be daunting, and if you’re not careful you can end up pulling a mini workshop on a trailer.

How to build your own motorcycle tool kit

Here’s how to build your tool kit. Take your adventure bike to pieces (as close to pieces as you can). Take everything off that you think is likely to go wrong with your bike within reason, there’s no point taking the engine apart as you won’t be taking it apart on a Namibian hard shoulder. Then put your bike back together, putting only the tools you use into one box.

By the time you’ve finished you should have all the tools needed to put your bike back together in one container. Now go through that pile and condense even further. You can do this by swapping out attachments, buying 2-in-1 parts and so on.

By doing this, not only will you build a solid and lightweight tool kit, the process will also build your confidence in using those tools and fixing anything that breaks.

Our RTW motorcycle tool kit

Here’s a complete list of all the tools, accessories and spares we use on our round the world motorcycle trip. Have fun building your own!

Accessories

  • Mr. Funnel (review) . This funnel is a water and dirt filter with no changeable or serviceable parts. It filters out water and debris which can contaminate fuel in areas with poor petrol or when buying fuel stored in Coke bottles on the side of the road in  Uzbekistan.
  • Large, medium and small cable ties
  • Duct and electrical tape
  • Ratchet strap (used to tie down your bike on ferries or for towing, strapping broken parts or fairings together. It’s one of our most used tools – couldn’t live without it!)
  • Jump cables . Can come in very handy.

Ultimate adventure bike tool kit

  • O-rings and washers for oil filter changing/ nuts, bolts and washers
  • Clutch and brake levers
  • Parts for Scottoiler
  • Universal cable repair kit (for clutch or throttle)
  • Front inner tube. We don’t carry a rear as tubes are heavy and we have a repair kit. The spare front tube can always be put in the rear tyre so we could hobble to a garage

Ultimate adventure bike tool kit

  • Rocky Creek light weight tyre pump (review) – compact, light and cheap at around £30
  • Three tyre levers and one rim protector
  • Puncture repair kit (tubed or tubeless kit depending on your bike)
  • Tyre pressure gauge.   Very handy when dropping and increasing your pressures for off-road riding and also for when fixing punctures.

Ultimate adventure bike tool kit

  • Silicone grease for air filter sealing
  • Standard grease, Loctite and copper grease.
  • Metal epoxy (cheap one from Halfords, but very effective at sticking metal together)
  • 3-in-one multi-purpose lubrication
  • We also carry a small amount of two consumables: engine oil and WD40 (we don’t carry spare Scott Oil as the reservoir carries 10,000 miles worth of oil).

Preparing a motorcycle tool kit for your trip

The above is what you’ll find in our tool kit. You may need a little more or less than we do. It depends on your bike, how much you want to carry, what work you want to or are prepared to do yourself, where you’re going and how long for… there are a lot of factors.

But to help gauge the size of your kit… this kit is about as big as you should need to go and that’s for a round the world trip that takes in plenty of off-road riding. And at the other end of the tool kit spectrum, if you’re heading off on a touring trip to Europe for a couple of weeks and mainly riding asphalt, then this is massively overkill. Just take a puncture repair kit, compressor and a multi-tool with perhaps a few other basics.

Still undecided?

If you’re still not sure what you should take, check out our adventure bike reviews by real world travellers section and see if your bike has been reviewed. Each review lists the type of repair work and spares needed for that specific bike on a big trip. And you could always go for a pre-prepared high-quality tool kit specifically setup for your motorcycle from a company like SBV.

Great write up and very useful ideas on how to pack an adventure bike tool kit. There’s quite a few bits in here I didn’t think of. Thanks a lot.

Hi Damien! Thanks very much! I’m glad you found it helpful. Good luck with your travels 🙂

Just ordered a Rocky Creek motorcycle pump after reading your recommendation. I particularly like your whole puncture repair kit setup. Cheers for putting this all together.

Hey Mac, thanks! Yeah the Rocky Creek pump is a brilliant bit of kit. We use it way more than we’d like to haha but are really glad we have it. Thanks again

Hey! how much does your complete kit weight more or less? I am trying to be as minimalist as possible but there is always some new tools to add :/

Thank you for the great blog, Cheers

Hey Ezequiel, Good question! I’d say about 4-5Kg – including the tool roll, tyre pump, tyre levers, ratchet and extras. When Covid hit, we were in Thailand and had to leave our bike there, as soon as we get back out there I’ll weigh the tool kit properly for you. Haha yeah, it’s hard not to add new tools. It all depends on how long and where you’re riding, if it’s a short trip (few months up to a year) and in countries where spares are readily available then you can half this kit easily. Long-term travel needs a lot more I believe. What weight have you got it to now? And many thanks very much! Really glad you like the blog 😀 Andy

Hey Andy, Sorry about that. Im sure soon you’ll have your motorcycle back again! Totally agree, everything depends of the lenght of the trip. The problem comes when you have no idea about it haha. My tool kit is at the moment about 3 Kg but still are mising some spares so it’ll go up quickly. We’ll see how that goes. Thank you for your help!

Cheers Ezequiel

Haha yeah you’re right! We had the same issue when we left as we had (still have) no idea we’d be gone for. 3kgs is a good weight for a kit. A couple of extra kgs for spares etc is totally fair and understandable so you’re definitely on the right track. It’s much better to be with than without, especially in some countries. Anyway, I look forward to hearing more about your trip sometime! Please feel free to message me anytime if i can help with anything. Cheers, Andy

Whats with the tiny spanners?

Hi Liam, the spanners are for adjusting the chain tension and a few other niggly areas on the bike that are hard to reach with a wrench and socket. Cheers

Hi Andy, maybe I missed it in all the comprehensive info but might it be an idea to include info on dealing with health issues? I used to travel extensively in India for business (albeit staying in 5 star hotels) but the same precautions applied wherever you were. Things like; don’t trust the water unless it comes out of sealed bottles, keep your mouth shut when showering, only brush your teeth with bottled water or from a trusted source. Believe me, a 5 star hotel is NOT a trusted source. How do you quickly and effectively deal with Delhi Belly? What happens if you do get sick or injured like poor Alyssa? I was lucky enough to have full company insurance, but how does a lone traveler ensure they get the same level of support? Keep up the great work on the blog!

Hey Paddy, thank you for your kind words on the blog! Great point and great tips too – thank you! We do have multiple guides on this very subject! They live under the Admin guides. There’s a section on the Admin landing page called Health and Safety. There are guides there like How to Stay Healthy on a Motorcycle Trip / How to Stay Safe on a Motorcycle Trip and about half a dozen others including guides on Emergency satellite devices and motorcycle travel insurance for emergencies etc. Have a read of those and see what you think – and please do feel free to add any tips you like in the comments section of those guides as I’m sure readers looking at those guides will find it helpful too! Cheers and all the best, Andy

Getting stuck on the side of the road can be a pain in the you know what. Whether you're taking a short ride around town or a road trip across the country, you should always carry a motorcycle tool kit. They are portable and provide some peace of mind, particularly if you're traveling long distances. We highlight some of the best motorcycle tool kits in the buying guide below.

Biker's Choice Roll-Up Tool Kit

Biker's Choice Roll-Up Tool Kit

This tool kit is designed for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and contains wrenches, a drive ratchet, locking pliers, a tire gauge, cable ties, electrical wire, a 10-piece hex key set, and more.

  • This is a great set of bike-specific tools
  • Tools look good and feel durable
  • Quite light and compact, considering how many tools it holds
  • Tool kit is too heavy and bulky to fit in a fork bag and is larger than advertised
  • Flashlight isn't very good quality

Cruztools SKHD SPEEDKIT Compact Tool Kit

Cruztools SKHD SPEEDKIT Compact Tool Kit

This tool kit for Harley-Davidson bikes includes wrenches, nut drivers, star bits, hex wrenches, a five-in-one screwdriver, pliers, a two-in-one spark plug socket, and a tire pressure gauge.

  • The best thing about this kit is its size. All the tools fit into a durable pouch that is small enough to fit in a fork bag
  • Very affordable
  • Missing some handy items, such as zip ties, a small knife, and a flashlight
  • Tools may be coated in an oily residue

RIFTWILD Metric Motorcycle ATV UTV Tool Kit

RIFTWILD Metric Motorcycle ATV UTV Tool Kit

This tool kit is designed for Japanese bikes. It comes with several wrenches, sockets, pliers, screwdrivers, and more.

  • Kit is lightweight and weighs under two pounds
  • Measures 7.2 x 3.5 x 1.5 inches and takes up very little space
  • This kit is a little pricey
  • Storage bag also appears a little flimsy and may not last as long as some other brands

Benefits of a Motorcycle Tool Kit

  • Get your bike running again. It's a pain to get stuck on the side of the road because something goes wrong with your bike. The best motorcycle tool kits have all (or most) of the components you need to get your bike running again.
  • Save money. It's much cheaper to fix something yourself than pay someone to haul your bike to a shop so a mechanic can fix it when it breaks down. A motorcycle tool kit is an affordable accessory that can prevent bigger expenses.
  • Portability. Many biker tool kits are compact, so they're easy to carry on your motorcycle. If you have saddlebags, a tank bag, or other storage options, you can carry your kit with you so it’s on hand if you have an emergency.

Types of Motorcycle Tool Kits

Rollup tool kit.

The advantage of having a rollup tool kit is that it's easy to store on your bike. It may not contain as many tools as other types of tool kits, but it takes up less room because it doesn't have hard, unbendable edges like tool kits that are contained in hard cases.

Hard Case Toolbox

If you want access to a lot of tools, consider a tool kit that comes in a sturdy, plastic storage case. While this type of kit is great to have at home, it can be a little bulky to carry with you on the road. The advantage to this type of kit is that it typically has a wide range of tools that can address a variety of problems you may encounter while you’re on a road trip.

Motorcycle Multi-Tool

If you don't have a lot of room for extra cargo on your bike, you may want to consider an extremely portable multi-function tool. These all-in-one devices feature items such as hex keys, Torx keys, screwdrivers, wrenches, and sockets, in a small, compact unit. They often can be used for maintenance as well as emergency breakdowns, and are tiny enough to carry in a pocket.

Biker’s Choice

New England Motor Parts Company (NEMPCO) got its start in 1971 and renamed itself Nempco - The Biker's Choice in 1984. The company manufactures a variety of motorcycle performance and replacement parts and items such as the Biker's Choice Roll-Up Tool Kit .

CruzTOOLs is a brand of the CycoActive Company, which is based in Seattle, Washington. CycoActive produces all sorts of gear related to the fast and light dual sport motorcycle segment. We recommend its Cruztools SKHD SPEEDKIT Compact Tool Kit .

Pit Posse was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in Saint Petersburg, Florida. It sells all sorts of motorcycle accessories and tools, as well as a line of Outlaw Racing products. One of its popular tool kits is the Pit Posse Harley Davidson Folding Tool Set 12 in 1 SAE Motorcycle Tool

Motorcycle Tool Kit Pricing

  • $20-$100: Some motorcycle tool kits are very affordable; however, they tend to be less robust in their offerings. If you want a dependable tool kit with a variety of wrenches, sockets, etc., expect to pay at least $30-$50. The more expensive a kit is, the more tools it will provide.
  • $100 and up: You can purchase a good-quality mechanic's tool kit without spending an exorbitant amount of money. These kits are useful for motorcycle repairs, but they aren't the most practical when it comes to taking them with you on the road. Since they contain so many tools, they tend to be heavy and bulky. However, they are very versatile and often feature both metric and SAE tools.

Key Features

Included tools.

Every motorcycle tool kit is a little different, but there are certain tools that every biker should have in order to repair his or her bike, particularly in a roadside emergency. Look for kits that include items such as an Allen wrench, flathead screwdriver, pliers, and adjustable wrench. It's also a good idea to have a flashlight, battery cables, zip ties, and a tire repair kit. Note: Make sure the tools are either metric or SAE, depending on what type of bike you ride.

The better quality the tools, the longer they will last. Unfortunately, many portable motorcycle tool kits have flimsy tools that can break after a short period of use. Invest in a tool kit that will provide the type of support you need, whether you're fixing your bike at home or repairing it on the side of the road.

This is something to consider if you plan on carrying a toolkit with you on your motorcycle. Large, heavy, and bulky kits are not a good option if you don't have a lot of storage space. Rollup pouches have a smaller profile and are easier to store. But if you plan on keeping your tool kit in the garage, the size and weight may not matter as much.

Other Considerations

  • Extras: You can use a general tool kit for many bike repairs; however, you may need to supplement it with motorcycle-specific components. Some bike toolkits, for example, include spare fuses and bulbs as well as a tire repair kit, zip ties, and duct tape. These little extras can be extremely helpful if you need to do a roadside repair.

Best Motorcycle Tool Kit Reviews & Recommendations 2021

Best Overall

If you have a Harley-Davidson, then this tool kit is a great option. It has a variety of tools, including 1/2 and 9/16-inch open-ended wrenches, a 3/8-inch drive ratchet, locking pliers, a pen-type tire gauge, cable ties, electrical wire, a 10-piece hex key set, a six-in-one screwdriver, a flashlight, and electrical tape.

Whether you are stranded or simply need to take your seat off to access the battery, this basic set of tools will do the trick. They are high-quality and durable, and the kit is surprisingly light and compact considering how many tools are included. It's easy to carry on your bike, and it rolls up nicely to save space in your saddlebag.

However, the tool kit cannot be used on metric bikes. It's also too heavy and bulky to fit in a fork bag and some other types of bags because it is larger than you may think. In addition, the flashlight isn't very good and can easily break.

This SPEEDKIT for Harley-Davidsons works on all models except the V-Rod. It has wrenches, nut drivers, star bits, hex wrenches, a five-in-one screwdriver, pliers, a two-in-one spark plug socket, and a tire pressure gauge. The bag is 7 by 2 by 2 inches.

This tool kit's biggest advantage is its small size. All the tools fit into a durable pouch that can fit in a fork bag. There is space in the bag to add items such as zip ties, a flashlight, spark plugs, electrical tape, and wire cutters. Overall, it contains most of the tools you may need in an emergency, and it's a great price.

Unfortunately, the tools aren't the highest quality and are pretty basic. Also, the kit doesn't include items such as zip ties, a small knife, and a flashlight. In addition, the tools may be coated in an oily residue.

Premium Pick

The RIFTWILD Metric Motorcycle ATV UTV Tool Kit is small enough to carry with you when you're on your bike. It has nine items in the tool bag, including a 16/17mm socket, 23mm socket, 19mm box wrench, 10/12mm open-ended wrench, 14/17mm open-ended wrench, spoke wrench,  Phillips/flathead screwdriver, slip-joint pliers, and a pin wrench with a tappet slot.

The kit is lightweight and weighs just 1.45 pounds. It measures 7.2 x 3.5 x 1.5 inches, so it doesn't take up too much space in a saddle bag. Overall, this tool kit is high quality and is designed for a variety of metric makes and models, including many Japanese bikes, such as Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki.

However, the tool kit is fairly expensive for what it includes, and the storage bag doesn't appear to be as robust or durable as some rival options.

Best Compact

Pit Posse Harley Davidson Folding Tool Set 12 in 1 SAE Motorcycle Tool

Pit Posse Harley Davidson Folding Tool Set 12 in 1 SAE Motorcycle Tool

This 12-in-1 carbon steel and ABS multitool is designed for Harley-Davidsons and includes the following tools: 5/32, 3/16, and 1/4-inch hex keys; T25 and T27 Torx keys; and a 1/4-inch driver with 3/8, 7/16, and 1/2-inch sockets. It also has a 10mm box and 9/16 open-end wrenches, a spoke wrench, and a slotted and Phillips screwdriver. The company provides a 30-day warranty.

This is a great option if you want something extremely lightweight and small. It fits under your seat or in your pocket. The device measures 3.5 inches long and 1-inch wide when it's folded. It also comes with a storage pouch and a loop to attach to your belt. It's a handy and very affordable gadget to have if you want an emergency tool set and need to make minor repairs on the go.

The biggest problem with this multitool is it's not useful on metric bikes. Also, even though it's fine as a roadside set, it's definitely not intended for everyday repairs. In addition, the nut that secures the tool together may come off.

Honorable Mention

CruzTOOLS SKJAS SPEEDKIT Tool Kit for Japanese Motorcycles

CruzTOOLS SKJAS SPEEDKIT Tool Kit for Japanese Motorcycles

This is another tool kit from CruzTOOLS, but it's designed for Japanese motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, and snowmobiles that require metric tools.  All of the items are contained in a compact 7 x 2 x 2-inch pouch. The kit includes a 10 x 12mm open end wrench, 14 x 17mm open end wrench, 8mm nut driver, 5/8-inch and 18mm combo spark plug wrench, mini 5-in-1 screwdriver w/ Torx bits, hex keys, 10-50 PSI tire gauge, and 5.5-inch slip-joint pliers.

The kit includes the most basic tools you may need in an emergency situation. It's designed to fit in most OEM tool compartments but features better, technician-grade tools than what's typically provided through a factory kit. Users report that this kit is compact and fits well under a variety of seats. The company also provides a lifetime guarantee should you experience any problems.

However, there have been some complaints about the screwdriver, which seems to be low quality compared to the other tools in the kit. Also, while it's compact, it may be too large for the tool carriers on some bikes.

Windzone Motorcycle Essential Tool Kit

Windzone Motorcycle Essential Tool Kit

According to Windzone, its tool kit can successfully tackle 99 percent of roadside as well as garage repairs. It features a six-in-one screwdriver, Allen and Torx head wrenches, spark plug sockets, a ratchet, a flashlight, and an Essenti-Tool. Each tool is drop forged and chrome-plated, while the pouch is made of heavy-duty nylon with a moisture-repelling sheath.

This Harley-Davidson tool kit is a great value, and it's compact and easy to use. It features a nice assortment of components, and when you're done using the tools they roll back up neatly into the pouch. It fits nicely in a saddlebag or swingarm pouch, and overall it's a pretty good emergency tool kit.

Unfortunately, this kit is designed for Harley-Davidsons and not metric bikes. Also, you may want to remove and add a few tools for customization because items such as the ratchet aren't the best quality. In addition, the kit may have a slight odor, the multi-tool is not very useful, and it's a little heavy.

53pcs 1/4-Inch Car Auto Automobile Motorcycle Repair Tool

53pcs 1/4-Inch Car Auto Automobile Motorcycle Repair Tool

This metric tool kit has 53 pieces and is designed for automotive, motorcycle, and home use. It has a ratchet wrench, batch heads, sleeves, slide bar, universal joint, square bar, extension bars, and a power drill adapter. The tools are made of high-strength, corrosion-resistant chrome vanadium steel and are contained in a plastic storage box.

This tool set is compact and perfect for making minor adjustments on a motorcycle or to tackle unexpected issues that occur when you're riding. It's a good option if you want a product that's affordable that you can also use for basic work around the house. You can keep it in the trunk of your vehicle for emergencies, and it's light and small enough to fit in a saddlebag.

One problem with this tool kit is it may not hold the tools very well, and the storage box isn't the best quality. You need to make sure to open it orange side up, and the screwdriver handle may come off after a short period of use.

DEWALT Mechanics Tools Kit and Socket Set

DEWALT Mechanics Tools Kit and Socket Set

This comprehensive tool kit has both metric and SAE tools, so you can use it on a variety of different motorcycles. It features 168 pieces, including sockets, wrenches, and hex keys. The 72-tooth gear system enables high-torque ratcheting, while the low-profile directional lever fosters one-hand operation.

All the tools are well-made, and they are snugly contained in the storage box. The sockets are stamped with the SAE or metric designation, and the ratchets, sockets, extensions, etc. have a professional-looking finish. This set includes MM/SAE HEX keys and a large set of star bits with a vinyl grip multi-driver.

However, the tool kit is extremely heavy, so it's not an option if you want a portable emergency roadside kit. It's also quite expensive compared to other kits on this list, it may have an odor, and it can be a little hard to remove sockets out of the stiff storage box.

  • Most breakdowns can be avoided if you properly maintain your bike and have it serviced regularly. Before you go on a road trip, make sure your motorcycle is in good working order.
  • Some bikes come with OE tool kits, but they don't always include everything you need for basic maintenance and repairs. A properly equipped motorcycle tool kit will help you carry out bigger jobs.
  • You can assemble your own tool kit by purchasing the tools separately, but it may be more expensive than a ready-made kit. Plus, you have to purchase an item such as a tool roll to hold all the equipment.

Q: What should be included in a motorcycle tool kit?

A: A tool kit should have everything you need if your bike breaks down. The kit should include an assortment of tools, as well as a flashlight, battery cables, spare fuses and bulbs, and a tire puncture repair kit. And if your bike has a recurring issue, make sure you carry the right tools and parts to repair it on the road.

Q: Do motorcycle tool kits fit under the seat?

A: It depends on the size of the tool kit and the type of motorcycle you are riding. A good tool kit will be packed with an assortment of items, so it probably won’t fit. If there’s no room under the seat, you can store a tool kit in the saddlebags or in a tank or fork bag.

Q: Are motorcycle tool kits expensive?

A: Expect to pay more for a good-quality tool kit with a large assortment of tools. Cheap motorcycle tool kits are widely available, but the items may break easily, and they may not provide extras, such as a flashlight or zip ties.

Final Thoughts

Our pick for the best motorcycle tool kit is the Biker's Choice Roll-Up Tool Kit .  It comes with a large assortment of tools that can conquer most roadside emergencies.

For a more budget-friendly option, consider the Cruztools SKHD SPEEDKIT Compact Tool Kit .

COLOMBIA MOTO ADVENTURES

Best Motorcycle Travel Tool Kit

We've put on a lot of miles while touring through the backcountry of Colombia and we learned a bunch of stuff along the way. My friend Alan (pictured on the right)  knows a ton about gear.   If you're looking for the best motorcycle emergency tool kit check out his tips and product recommendations below.

What to look for in a Motorcycle Travel / Emergency Tool Kit:

Small - One of the most important things is to have everything be in a small size. If your tool kit is too big it won't be able to fit comfortably in your pack and you may think that since its so bulky it's not worth the hassle to take along.

Lightweight - I used to think that big heavy-duty products were the best to bring along on a trip. That was until I tried using it in the field. Imagine that you have a flat tire in the rain and mud. You don't want to be stuck messing around with all sorts of heavy, bulky gear. Quick, simple, and lightweight is the way to go.

Cheap - The cheaper the better my dudes. This stuff is for emergencies, not working on your Mercedes AMG CLK GTR1 that you have in your garage. The tools don't have to be of the absolute best quality. They just have to be good enough to get you out of the situation that you're in.

IMG_7070.JPG

Craftsman Metric Wrench Set - Need to change a motorcycle tire or get some bolts off? We recommend this metric wrench set. Its cheap, good quality and small enough to put in your tool roll.

Slime Tire Inflator -  This was a real game changer for me. I used to use bicycle foot pumps but got tired of the bulky size and the time it took to fill up a tire. Then thought about getting a big electric tire inflator but I thought that it was too big to take a long. My friend Alan turned me on to this mini-tire inflator pump and it changed my life. This thing is so small you wouldn't believe it and it only takes about 3 minutes for it to fill up a tire. I take it everywhere with me and use it every chance I get.

Nelson-Rigg Tool Roll - Nelson Rigg makes some really high quality equipment for a good price and lots of their products come with a lifetime warranty. This tool roll is a perfect fit for your tire irons and wrenches and rolls up nice and neat to fit in your bag.

Tire Spoons - There are lots of different types of tire spoons out there but these are what I use. They are long enough to get good leverage so you can easily pop off the tire from the rim and they have smooth round edges so you won't puncture your tire tube when putting the tire back on.

Nelson-Rigg Motorcycle Rain Suit - It can get really cold out here, especially when riding through the mountains in the rain. Hypothermial can be an issue so we recommend protecting yourself by bringing a good quality rain suit. These Nelson Rigg rain suits offer high quality and a great value for the money.

Bondhus Allen Wrench Set - For portability, a folding set of hex wrenches is nice to have. These were the least expensive ones we looked at, but they had the most comfortable handle and the most useful features. We liked how the wrenches can also be stopped at 90 degrees from the handle, which helps to quickly loosen or tighten a screw. These are also covered by a lifetime guarantee.

Olympia Motorcycle Rain Suit - This is another option that offers great quality for the money. It's breathable and it has enough of that green neon color facing forward and backwards for safety in low visibility conditions, like rain. It also has built in reflectivity.

Craftsman Screwdriver Set - Small, simple, compact and lightweight. Fits great in the tool roll. Comes with a  Philips and flat blade so you're good to go for all situations.

Olympia Motorcycle Rain Pants  - Same thing as the top but it's the pants. This is another option that offers great quality for the money. It's breathable and it has enough of that green neon color facing forward and backwards for safety in low visibility conditions, like rain. It also has built in reflectivity.

HTS Screwdriver Set - If you don't want to spend the money for the Craftsman name this one is just as good and it's half the price.

Paracord - Paracord is  Light weight, strong and cheap. Military uses it. I like it as an emergency tow rope. Need to tow your bike? Maybe the lid of your top box broke and you need to tie it down. This is the way to go. Keep 50' feet of it in a zip lock bag and you won't be sorry.

Craftsman Adjustable Wrench Set - These are great for taking off the nuts holding on the wheels. Good for all sorts of other stuff too.

50L Waterproof Dry Bag - 30L is to small 65L is too big. 50 liters is pretty much the right size for a 1-2 week long trip. Tie it down to the passenger seat with some Rok Straps and you're ready to go.

Rok Straps - Another game changer for me. I used to try to strap everything down with bungee straps and ratchet straps. These are basically quick release bungee straps. I only need to use two of them to strap my dry bag down and they come right off. Makes loading up a 10 second process.

Gorilla Duct Tape - Duct Tape fixes everything. Recommended to have in your kit.

Pliers - You need these to remove the cotter pin from the axle nut. We recommend these more than needle nose pliers because they have better grip strength and will do most of what needle nose will do. Needle  nose are nice for getting into super tight places. But that's not always going to be an issue in the field.
