Local Villages

While on Kedarkantha trek, you explore tiny local villages; some brimming with activity whereas others shrouded in awkward solitude and peaceful serenity.

sankri village in winters

Sankri is one such village which serves as the base camp for many treks . Situated in the valley of Tons river, this scenic hamlet is a hub of activity during the trekking season. Blessed with expansive grounds, the backdrop of Swargarohini peaks and view of the impressive Himalayan skyline, Sankri is a trekkers delight. Saud village takes you back in time. You get a chance to sneak a peak into the simple life of locals who still lead the most primitive lifestyles. Watching women and children carrying dried leaves and flocking herds of cattle gives you a pleasant change from the hush-hush life of a city.

lohajung village in snow

The base camp for Brahmatal trek is at Lohajung, a tiny village which flatters you with magical views of mountain peaks almost touching the clouds. The village is deeply rooted in mythology; it is believed that Goddess Parvati had a war with demon Lohasur here, hence the name Lohajung (war with Lohasur).

Scenic Lakes

Juda Ka Talab , the glacial mountain lake, located at an altitude of 2,700 meters is the highlight of the Kedarkantha trek. This lake surrounded by mighty oak and countless pine trees captivates you with a beauty so surreal that you are left spellbound for a couple of seconds. The reflection of trees and mountain peaks on crystal clear waters of the lake is a scene taken from the calendar. According to Hindu mythology, the lake has its origins in the water droplets that fell from Lord Shiva's hair. A lake was formed where water from Lord Shiva's hair fell on the ground.

juda ka talab

Brahmatal , as the name says, is a lake dedicated to Lord Brahma and is the major highlight of the Brahmatal trek. It is believed that Lord Brahma meditated here many years ago. The lake is perched at an altitude of 3,400 meters. The scenic beauty of the lake leaves you awestruck; whether it is deep blue waters during summers or its frozen glory in winters, each season showcases a panorama which is absolutely unique and spectacular. A lone tree overlooking the lake perfectly complements the solitude of the place.

frozen brahmatal lake

Bekaltal, the stunningly calm lake cocooned by thick oak trees is another highlight of the Brahmatal trek. This lake is dedicated to Lord Nag Devta.

Campsite near "Juda Ka Talab", surrounded by thick tall trees and spectacular mountain slopes is the prettiest camping site. The sunlight seeps through the thicket of trees and weaves a spectacular array of designs on the forest ground. Watching the sunrise and sunset behind the majestic peaks is an experience of a lifetime; the sun rays cast amazing hues of orange and red on the mountain peaks.

juda ka talab campsite

The Brahmatal campsite, 500 metres away from Brahmatal Lake treats you with stunning sunrise and awesome sunsets reflecting an amazing kaleidoscope of fiery red and orange hues on a snow-capped mountain peaks. The night sky here is a haven for stargazers. One can spend the entire night gazing at the blanket of stars which are strewn all across the sky.

Another highlight of the trek is the adventurous trek to Kedarkantha summit where you are at an eye-level with all the summits and feel as if you are touching the sky. Black Peak, also called Kalanag, is the highest peak in the Bandarpoonch mountain range and one gets a clear view of this peak from the Kedarkantha summit .

Brahmatal peak, located at 3,734 metres is another pinnacle of this trek . It offers a scintillating spectacle of Himalayan peaks from close proximity, especially of Mount Trishul and Nandaghunti.

Trek to a high altitude lake in Mt Trishul's shadow

Some of our top treks are favourites because of the mountain views they offer. Think of Chaukhambha from Deoriatal Chandrashila or Bandarpoonch from Dayara Bugyal. It is difficult to find such magnified views of big mountains like these. However, Brahmatal is a trek that takes the cake. It has a view that beats all of these!

Here is why. Right on your second day, you climb out of the beautiful rhododendron and oak forest to see a white wall of the Trishul massif. And these views only come closer as you traverse the ridge towards Jhandi Top.

At Jhandi top, you are almost at the center of the mountain views. To your right rises the massive Mt Trishul and to your left stands Mt Nanda Ghunti. You even see the Ronti Saddle, the ridge that connects Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti!

That is not all. At the highest point of the Brahmatal trek, Brahmatal Top,  a new set of mountains open themselves up before you. You see Mt Neelkanth, and Mt Hathi Ghoda… while Trishul and Nanda Ghunti are to your right. Always there.

Did you know that Lohajung, the basecamp of Brahmatal, is the birthplace of Indiahikes? Click to watch the whole story.

Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti, are your companions throughout the trek. Even the highest point of this trek is approached from the side that is exposed to Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti.  This trek deserves to be talked about among treks with the best mountain views.

To top it all, Brahmatal has lovely forests, two lakes to look forward to and a meadow to traverse through.

What I Like About the Brahmatal Trek

Sandhya is a founding partner at Indiahikes. Over the past ten years, she has explored and put on the map a few of the greatest Himalayan treks in India, including Kashmir Great Lakes and Kedarkantha. She is a TedX Speaker and has been awarded the "Women of Worth" Award by Outlook Business in 2017. She believes in sustainable living just as she believes in sustainable trekking. Here’s Sandhya talking about one of the well-known treks in our country.

1 . The Rhododendron forest from Lohajung to Bekaltal

Brahmatal has mesmerising forest walks. You get to walk through the centuries-old forests of Oaks and Rhododendrons. What particularly stays with me is the  dedicated section on Rhododendrons ! Just out of Bekaltal, you get a demarcated section of Rhododendron forests.

The Rhodo forests are a treat to the eyes. The trunks twist and turn in shapes and forms. The trunks are usually bare and smooth wooded. The trees are not too tall and form a nice canopy at the top. They are close enough to form a perfect green roof over your head.

This is what you see throughout the year. If you come here during  March and April, you get a pink flowery roof . If you come here during  winters, you get a white snowy carpet

moxtain brahmatal trek

2 . The ridge meadow walk from Tilandi to Jhandi Top

On the second day, you climb out of Bekaltal trekking up through some of the most beautiful rhododendron and oak forests. As you near the top, you are curious and impatient to see what lies outside the tree line.

You enter the meadow on the mountain top and in front of you is a wall of white mountains. Having climbed all the way up to the ridge (which runs parallel to Ali Bugyal of the Roopkund trek), you see grand views of the Trishul range.

You know you are climbing to the top but the enormity of the  mountain ranges so up close  is something very special to Brahmatal.

Starting there, all the way to Jhandi top is one of the best ridges walks you will do in our mountains. On one side you have the mighty Trishul range fanning out and on the other side opens up to layers and layers of mountain ranges arranging themselves in height order going down all the way to Deval and Tharali.

These are the villages that you drove through to reach the base camp. To your right below the  Trishul, the range spreads out the entire Roopkund trek . Every landmark, every campsite, and every climb on the Roopkund trek is seen from the Brahmatal ridge. I have never stood on one trek and gone through another trek, that too perhaps the most iconic trek in its entirety like this.

3 . The Gujreni Campsite

The Gujreni campsite enclosed by forest but in grassy clearings, with commanding views of mountain tops, I think I could fall in love with these camps.

They are secluded, with plenty of space to stretch your legs, walkabout, or take a peek in the forests, yet, you can just sit in one corner taking in the views. I have done lots of treks and have loved lots of camps, but if you ask me about Brahmatal, then I think it has some of the better campsites.

Trek Trivia

Things Nobody Tells You About Brahmatal

The Arrowheads of Bekal Tal

Tale of the Bekal Naag Devta and the Pundit

moxtain brahmatal trek

In the neighbouring areas of Bekal Tal, people can be seen wearing or carrying arrowheads. These are used as lockets, some are displayed in homes, and some are attached to peoples’ walking sticks among other such ornamentations. These arrowheads have a couple of stories behind them.

Uttarakhand is known as dev bhumi (divine or holy land) as Mahabharat is said to have taken place in parts of it. It is said that the arrowheads are from the days of the grand epic when they were used in battles. These arrowheads can be found stuck on trees in the forests as well today too. However, most of them have been removed and are being used by the locals.

There's also another story related to Lord Curzon linked to the arrowheads. It's often hard to verify what is fact and what isn't, but they're good stories to listen to. Make sure you ask your guide or the locals about it.

moxtain brahmatal trek

There are stories of a local pundit who would come to pray to this Naag Devta regularly. Pleased with his steady devotion and service, the God once invited him down to his golden temple at the depths of the lake. The pundit is said to have seen a stunning sight. That of an underwater city of snakes, with the Naag Devta presiding over them in his temple.

The story takes a sad turn when the pundit defies the snake god. However, the myth brings forth interesting elements in the region. Not only is the Bekal Tal a sight of this myth, but the Ratgaon water source appears like the meandering body of a snake, as seen from Tilandi. Mythology tells us that Bekal Naag Devta left the lake through that route, leaving the Ratgaon water body in this snake-like figure.

Even the water from Bekal Tal is said to have seeped down along with him and appeared in the Ratgaon source.

5 Reasons Why Indiahikes

moxtain brahmatal trek

When we brought out new trails in Indian trekking, safety came with us. Back in 2012, we were the first to introduce microspikes, and two years later, pulse oximeters became standard thanks to us. Nobody does safe treks like Indiahikes. In the mountains, emergencies don't care who you're with – everyone knows that when trouble hits, you look for the yellow tents of Indiahikes.

moxtain brahmatal trek

We are pioneers in trekking. Since 2007, we have brought out treks that have become India's most famous treks: Roopkund, Rupin Pass, Buran Ghati, Kedarkantha, Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, Brahmatal, Phulara Ridge—the list goes on. In 2023 alone, we brought out five new treks in Indian trekking. We know treks better than anyone . This comes directly from the reason why Indiahikes was born: to bring out trek information and enable trekkers to trek on their own.

moxtain brahmatal trek

More than 25,000 people trek with us every year. We are the largest trekking organisation in India. 24% of our trekkers come back to trek with us every year. Over 4,000 students from the top educational institutions trek with us every year. Aside from this, families with children choose to trek with Indiahikes knowing that our treks are the safest. We have taken over 8000 children trekking so far, and the number continues to grow.

moxtain brahmatal trek

We focus on designing transformative experiences. Our trek leaders conduct thought-provoking exercises that help you reflect and contemplate. This impact stays with you for a long time. Trekkers return feeling energised, more confident, or developing abilities to deal with difficulties. Many have changed careers, rethought their core values, become more humble, shown gratitude to others, or started a new fitness journey.

moxtain brahmatal trek

Since 2012, we have pioneered sustainable practices that have become standard in trekking. Using eco-bags, our trekkers have cleared over 120 tonnes of litter from the mountains. We do not carry packaged foods; instead, we serve freshly made food. We do not light campfires; we carry coal to light angethis to keep you warm. Our bio-toilets not only keep our toilets odour-free but also enrich the soil. When you trek with us, you leave mountains better.

The journey commences at Rishikesh. Our representatives will pick you up from ISBT Rishikesh at 6:00 AM and we will drive to Lohajung, the base village for our trek. Lohajung is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand and is 250 km away from Rishikesh. It takes about 10-11 hours to reach the village. Transportation to Lohajung will be arranged by Trek The Himalayas in Tata Sumo or a similar vehicle. Reaching Lohajung you will check into the guesthouse.

From Rishikesh to Lohajung, you will drive across mountain roads, and on a clear day, you can see the Garhwal Himalayas in the distance. Drive along with a tranquil setting with the River Ganga keeping you company. Along the way, you will come across three of the five major holy confluences of the country; Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karanprayag. Devprayag sees the confluence of the Alakananda and Bhagirathi Rivers. You can see distinct turquoise and teal colours of two rivers merging together. Passing Srinagar, you will come across Rudraprayag, the confluence of Mandakini and Alakananda River, and about 33 kms from Rudraprayag lies the third confluence on your route, Karanprayag - the confluence of Mandakini and Pindar River.

Lohajung brings you face to face with the majestic Nanda Ghunti peak. If we arrive before sunset, you can catch a beautiful sunset on the mountain peak, painting it in incredible hues. There’s interesting folklore revolving around the naming of the village. The locals say that Goddess Parvati had a ‘Jung’ (war in Hindi) with a demon named ‘Lohasur’ here and hence the naming of the village. Lohajung has a small market as well where you can purchase trek gear and essentials that might be valuable on your trek.

Lohajung is a high-altitude village so you can expect it to be cold, especially at night and it can also be rainy and foggy depending on the season. Pack appropriate clothing to help you adjust to the weather.

The meadows along the trek are a vivid interplay of colours. Halfway through your trek, the landscape becomes resplendent with the vibrant hues of Rhododendron trees dotting the region. As the journey progresses, the majestic Oak trees take over, adding an air of serenity to the path. After approximately an hour of trekking through this picturesque forest section, youll notice the tree line gracefully receding, giving way to the vast meadows that beckon you forth.

Stepping into the meadows, a sight of unparalleled beauty unfolds before your eyes. The majestic panorama of Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti, accompanied by their associated mountain ranges, graces the horizon with their awe-inspiring presence. Natures grandeur is showcased in all its glory, leaving you mesmerized by the majestic peaks of the Himalayas. Our next campsite, Tilandi, is situated on the edge of the meadows. From the campsite, you can see the entire stretch from Lohajung to Wan below and across the valley, one can see the renowned meadows of the Roopkund trail, namely Ali and Bedni Bugyals.

Amidst the mighty Himalayas, this short yet enchanting day on the trail proves to be a captivating experience.

From the summit of Jhandi Top, take the left trail to begin your descent towards Lohajung. As you venture onwards, the majestic mountain views will gradually recede behind you. Approximately a kilometer into the descent, the treeline embraces you once more, surrounded by lush Oak trees. Soon, youll come across a serene clearing known as Khorurai, aptly named as Khoru translates to Oak. Take a well-deserved rest here, and if you wish to extend your trek for another day, this delightful spot could serve as a possible campsite.

Another 1.3 kilometers of descent will lead you to join the main trail. Continue your journey through the enchanting Rhododendron forest before transitioning to the well-made, man-made trail. This trail serves as a vital connection between the mountain villages leading down to Lohajung.

After approximately an hour from your starting point, youll reach the Shepherd huts, known locally as chawni, where villagers and shepherds tend to their livestock. Continue on the well-laid man-made trail, following the path that connects these mountain villages to the picturesque destination of Lohajung. In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

  • The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.

  • Change of trek batch is dependent on the availability of seats in the batch
  • In case of transferring a trek to a friend, he/she should satisfy all the mandatory requirements put forward by TTH

Mastering Alpine Lakes: The Ultimate Brahmatal Trek Guide

Brahmatal is a highly sought-after destination for adventurers for several compelling reasons. Offering a unique winter trekking experience, the Brahmatal trek allows adventure enthusiasts to witness frozen landscapes, snowy trails, breathtaking panoramic views, and even walk on frozen lakes. Completely frozen from October to March, it is home to a unique blend of tranquillity and adventure. Before you embark on an expedition of your own, let us guide you through this winter wonderland.

Why Brahmatal is the most popular winter trek in Uttarakhand, India

snow camping

The Brahmatal Trek in the winter is the only trek that leads to an alpine lake and even lets you camp on the snow near it, providing a rare and exceptional experience. Snow blankets the trails as well as the rhododendron and oak forests, creating breathtaking vistas.

The winter trek to Brahmatal is particularly popular because of the extended golden hours when the mountain peaks light up with a brilliant alpenglow in the evenings. The rare experience of trekking on not one but two frozen lakes, Bekaltal and Brahmatal, makes this winter trek an absolute favourite among adventure enthusiasts.

Exploring the high-altitude haven: Brahmatal location

Brahmatal, at an altitude of 12,250 ft, is located right in the heart of a flowering meadow in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. Surrounded by lush forests, most of the trek is done under forest cover, decreasing the chances of altitude sickness due to the abundance of fresh oxygen.

Brahmatal Trek Blog – Winter Trek in Uttarakhand

Lone tree watching over Brahmatal Lake

Located around 200 km from Kathgodam, Brahmatal lake is one easy trek to forget you about tedious daily lives. Brahmatal trek equally enchants beginner as well as the experinced. If you’re planning to do brahmatal trek solo, this blog will definitely of help as I too have done Brahmatal trek solo in Jan 2018. And yes, of course, this post is all about my own trek experince of Brahmatal. But before we jump into that, a bit about Brahmatal itself.

In mythology, Brahmatal lake is known for Lord Brahma, who is said to have meditated here once. En route this trek, you’ll find many mind blowing snow covered landscapes stretching far into the forest and these frames keeps changing as one progresses into the trek. In winters, Brahmatal lake gets completely frozen, which is an amazing sight for snow lovers. From the summit, one gets spectacularly close view of Mount Trishul and Nandaghunti standing against you in all their glory. Catch the video glimpse of Brahmatal Trek here.

Brahmatal is one of the rare snow trek where one gets to camp near two different lake on two consecutive days. Lohajung is also the starting point of another famous trek, Roopkund, which lies on the opposite side. In fact, Roopkund trail is also visible as you continue on this trek. Below is the brief overview of the trek:

Location:  Lohajung (200 km from Kathgodam)  Trek Duration:  4~6 Days (Kathgodam to Kathgodam). I for myself, did it in 4 days. Best Season:  Winter season, Post December End to Mid April. I started this on Dec 31 and finished on Jan 1. You could say I took one year to complete this 🙂 Difficulty Level:  More of Moderate Level  Max Altitude:  11000 Feet/ 3350 Metres  Brahmatal Trek Distance:  Around 25 km (Lohajung to Lohajung)  Trek Dates:  Dec 31, 2017 – Jan 1, 2018

Since I had my own tent and bag, I took help of a local guide for the entire trek path at a fee of 800 per day. Food and Dhaba were available in Bekaltal and Brahmatal, so that’s not an issue. Overall, it was quite a cheap trek for me, around 4000 INR for the complete trek from Delhi to Delhi. If you wish to contact the guide, here are the details: Pushkar Bhai (7060771854). He currently works with Moxtain team, which is an amazing trekking company.

Brahmatal Trek Itinerary:

Day 1 [drive from delhi to haldwani to lohajung]:.

Haldwani is around 6 hour bus journey from Delhi. To get a bus to Haldwani, reach Kasmiri Gate ISBT. Once you have reached Haldwani, your next destination needs to be Lohajung (after reaching Haldwani, I inquired local people about how to reach Lohajung. But they were all confusing it with Lohaghat, which is a completely different place altogether). You could either take a direct shared taxi to Lohajung, which can be found from Kathgodam. Kathgodam is around 6 KM from Haldwani. it will take you around 20 Rs for an auto.

At my time, I wasn’t aware of direct taxi to Lohajung. So I took 3-4 connecting buses to reach Lohajung in following manner. Haldwani –> Almora (Rs 160) Almora –> Garur (Rs 10 + Rs 90). Rs 10 to reach Kemu station to get bus to Garur Garur –> Gwaldam (Rs 35) Gwaldam –> Dewal (Rs 80) Dewal –> Lohajung (Rs 600 Cab) I would suggest to reach Dewal by 4 PM so that you could take a shared cab from Dewal to Lohajung. In my case, I got late and reached Dewal around 6:30 PM, hence I had to book the cab for 600 Rs. Ooops !! That’s definitely not good for you when you’re on a short budget. So do care. 🙂

There is also a direct bus from Haldwani to Dewal, which leaves early in the morning around 4 or 5 AM. One can also catch this. Once reached Lohajung. I stayed in a guest house, at a cost of 250 Rs per day. Btw, a lot of people say that sunset view over Nanda Ghunti from Lohajung is quite beautiful. Since I was late, I didn’t get the chance to capture it. Hope you do witness and capture.

Day 2 [Trek from Lohajung To Bekaltal To Brahmatal Lake]:

It was today in the morning that I met Pushkar bhai through some contacts. I then took the necessary pass from Forest Department and without further delay started the trek around 9:30 AM.  This was my first forest pass that I ever took by myself. 🙂 Similarly, when you go with a trekking company, these are all pre-arranged by them on your behalves. Here is the pass issued, for example.

Pass Issued by Forest Department

Now, the most preferred trek itinerary for this trek is Lohajung —> BekalTal BekalTal –> Brahmatal Brahmatal —> Brahmatal (After summit, come back at Brahmatal camp site) Brahmatal —> Lohajung, but since I was short of time, and trek was not difficult, I merged the first two days. There are 1 or 2 tea and maggi stalls at Bekaltal, but nothing like dhaba. If you’re solo and planning to stay in Bekaltal, feel free to pack some lunch/dinner stuff from Lohajung. Or maybe some fruits. I stayed in Bekaltal for around 30-40 minutes and then ended the day by reaching directly Brahmatal lake. I found some beautiful landscape at Bekaltal and thereafter at Brahmatal. These are amazing landscapes. You must not forget to capture them. I reached Brahmatal comfortably by 3 PM.

In late winters, towards Jan end, Brahmatal lake freezes under snow and is quite enchanting to witness. At my time, only a thin sheets of ice were present here and there on the lake. It was cloudy and their reflection was amazing in the lake. I stayed near the lake for around 1 hour. As for food, there is a dhaba in Brahmatal, so that’s not a worry. I had some lunch here and settled my tent afterwards. Since I was alone, I took some random clicks and finally ended the day after some chit chat with Pushakar bhai. Some pics from the day:

Camp site at Bekaltal

Day3 [Trek from Brahmatal to Brahmatal Summit to Brahmatal to Bekaltal to Lohajung]:

Today was the summit day and I wanted to start early to catch a glimpse of the sunrise. Though, I wanted to start even earlier, we finally made our first mark of the day around 5AM. It was still quite dark, too chilling and windy. Through deep black forest, we made our way towards the glorious summit. Even though it was quite steep and I had to take 2-3 breaks on the route, it was only for the glorious view of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti that kept me wanting to push more.

Once we reached the summit (around 7:30 AM), it was a mesmerizing view. It was the topmost point, wind was blowing furiously. And by furious I meant, I was not able to use camera for more than 10 seconds continuously. Cold chilling breeze was forcing me to put back my hand in pockets, every-time I tried to took some shots. To make things worse, I had also forgotten to take my gloves. I stayed there for around 2 hours, fighting the cold breeze and capturing some shots.

Me Enjoying the Summit View

Once the sun was bright and hot enough, we started to trek down. Now, most people trek down back to Brahmatal lake and stay there for the day, which is fine if you’ve good enough time for your trip. As I was short of time, I wanted to come all the way to Lohajung. And so, we started around 9 AM and kept our pace as good as we could. We crossed Brahmatal, bid farewell to few new friends, and continued for Bekaltal, and from there to Lohajung. It was around 2 PM, when we finally reached the Lohajung.

We then took some rest and had our lunch together. There are many dhaba shops in Lohajung itself, so food is not an issue. Then I paid Pushkar bhai for 3 day fee (since I expected myself to finish the trek in 3 days and hence the booked the guide for 3 days). It cost me around 2400.

Well, now the trek was over and I had to get back to Delhi as soon as possible. There is a direct bus from Lohajung which leaves for Haridwar. But since this bus leave early in the morning around 5AM, I had to stay again at the guest house. And that’s what I did. It was really comforting as my legs were looking for some rest. I took the next day bus and came back to Haridwar, and from there to Delhi on the same day. By night, I was cozily lying in my soft bed in Gurgaon.

If you wish to share your trek experience, I wold love to know about it. Feel free to comment here, or maybe on Insta/YouTube./Facebook. If you wish to catch on more photos from Brahmatal trek, visit me on instagram . You could also check out my other treks here .

Spanning over 28 km, the Brahmatal trek begins from the base village of Lohajung located in the Chamoli district in Garhwal Himalayas. The 6 km trek from Lohajung to the Gujreni campsite runs through dense forests of Conifer, Cedar, Oak and Fir. The Gujreni campsite is at the heart of a beautiful clearing surrounded by Oak and Rhododendrons with panoramic views of snow-capped ranges.

The next day, the trek gradient increases gradually. A 2-hour trek will lead you to the Bekaltal lake, frozen during the winter months, making up for a tranquil view.

The trail heading out of the lake continues to remain dominated by Oak and Rhododendron forests. You start catching glimpses of Mt Trishul through the woods from here on. The forest soon opens up to an expansive meadow, Talindi Top, that rewards you with spectacular views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti amongst others. The ascent continues beyond this point until you reach Jhandi Top which surpasses the views offered by Talindi Top. It is a 1.5 km descent from here onwards to the Brahmatal campsite. The campsite is delightfully set at one end of a ridge, opening up to a stunning view of the blue silhouette of mountain ranges stacked layer after layer at the horizon. The Brahmatal lake is only 500 M from the campsite. According to legend, the lake is believed to be the place where Lord Brahma meditated ages ago.

The trek to the summit begins the next day and is nothing short of thrilling. The trail climbs through moderately inclined dense forests eventually translating into a ridge stretch that opens up to gaping views of the tremendous valley behind. The summit offers awe-inspiring vistas of some well-known Himalayan ranges like Mount Trishul, sacred Mount Nanda Ghunti, Mount Chaukhamba, Mount Neelkanth, Mount Kamet and Mount Hathi Ghoda.

While the trail is relatively easy to navigate, the ascent to Brahmatal Top can be challenging during heavy snowfall season. The snow, during these times can run knee deep requiring some effort during ascent and descent. Brief Itinerary

Detailed itinerary.

Arrive at Lohajung (2331 M)

Distance: 294 kms (Dehradun to Lohajung)

Duration:   11-12 hours

We begin our journey to Lohajung from ISBT Dehradun latest by 7 AM. It is located at a distance of 294 km from Dehradun and would take about 11-12 hours to cover. The landscapes throughout this drive are striking.

The journey begins with a drive uphill that will take you through the Kumaon region into the Himalayan Belt of Garhwal. The roads here are extensive and the Shivalik ranges can be spotted at the horizon. The setting is tranquil and the Ganga river accompanies you swiftly throughout this stretch.

It gets exciting after this. We will be passing through three of the five iconic confluences of the Alaknanda river (Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag) on the way to Lohajung.

A beautiful showcase of tradition, Devprayag, is the first confluence we will be passing by. It is the converging point of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers. You can clearly see the turquoise of one merging with the teal of the other in the valley below.

40 kms from this point, we reach the historic town of Srinagar on the banks of Alaknanda. The Rudraprayag lies further ahead from here.  It is the confluence of the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers.

About 33 km from Rudraprayag is the third confluence of Karnapraya, the meeting point of the Alaknanda and the Pindari River. Each confluence is unique in its setting and is a delight to behold!

Lohajung, located in the Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas, is 86 km from Karnaprayag. Expect to reach Lohajung by late evening around 8-9pm.

Lohajung (2331 M) to Gujreni/Lower Bekaltal (2750 M)

Distance: 6 kms

Duration: 4-5 hours

We begin from Lohajung at 9 AM. Packed lunches will be provided for the day. The trek starts on a well-paved stone trail that heads into the forest. The Nanda Ghunti Peak can be spotted right from the beginning of the trek.

After a short walk through the woods, you will come across Mandoli village tucked in to the colossal mountain ranges on your left. The trail ascends gradually in long, serpentine curves from here. Higher up, you will be able to spot the Kali Valley which is the confluence of the Kali and Pindari rivers.

Beyond this point, the trail mostly runs through dense forests of conifer, Cedar, Oak and Fir allowing little sunlight in. There are also Rhododendrons in this region. They bloom during late winter and early spring season and cover the trail in pretty colors of orange and red. During the winter months, these paths are covered with pristine white snow and no flower blossoms.

The next landmark from here is a 10 m wooden bridge running over a stream where you can refill your bottles. Crossing the bridge, you will reach Begum that makes for an excellent resting point overlooking the expansive Navali and Bagdi Bugyals.

At a 20 minute hike from here, you will come across two streams. The second stream which is the Gujreni stream will eventually lead you to a beautiful clearing set in the backdrop of lush forests. This is the campsite for the day.

This region carries a woody scent and is surrounded by umber-brown Oak and Rhododendron forests. After setting up the camps, try spotting some of the birds around like Himalayan Woodpecker, Asian Barred Owlet and Blue-fronted Redstart amongst others. You will encounter snow from late December till Early March at this campsite dropping the temperature considerably.

Rejoice in the seclusion and silence of the campsite for it offers an opportunity to look inwards as much as outwards.

Trek from Gujreni/Lower Bekaltal (2750 m) to Brahmatal (3400 M)

Distance: 5 kms

The trail from the Gujreni Campsite enters a thicket of forests with a moderate ascent throughout. You will catch the first glimpse of Mt. Trishul through the towering trees here. At a 2 hour hike away, lays the Bekaltal lake lined with Oak trees all around.

The color of the water is mud-brown indicating a high amount of dissolved organic matter. During the peak winter months, the lake is likely to be frozen. You can spend some time here immersing in the profound silence of this setting.

The trail dives straight into dense Oak and Rhododendron forests with a steep incline for the next hour. As you walk higher, you will see an idyllic view of the Bekaltal Lake retreating slowly below. The canopy of the forests is almost impenetrable, keeping most of the sunlight out. This allows patches of snow to sustain on the trails even in early spring season.

After an hour or so, the forest opens up to a spectacular meadow, called Talindi Top which offers some phenomenal views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. 1 km from here is the Jhandi top that sets a stunning vantage point surpassing the views offered earlier at Talindi Top. With the skies wide open and several layers of jewel-blue mountains decked one over the other, the spectacle is absolutely surreal to behold.

Jhandi Top marks the highest point on the ridge. The trail begins to descend beyond this point. The Brahmatal campsite is only 1.5 km of a downhill trek on the ridge from here.

After you reach the campsite, you can visit the Brahmatal Lake which is only 500m from the campsite. The Brahmatal lake is believed to be the place where Lord Brahma meditated long ago. This lake is completely frozen during winter season and is a marvel to behold.

One can go out and explore the beautiful photography options available at this place. Be prepared for subzero temperatures that could fall even below -7 degree Celsius during peak winter nights.

Brahmatal (3400 M) to Brahmatal Top (3846 M) to Brahmatal

Duration: 4 hours

The trek starts early around 6AM after having a light breakfast at the campsite. This day of the trek is the most fascinating visually and the terrain is relatively easy to negotiate. There is also the added advantage of leaving the backpacks behind at the campsite since we will be returning here for the night.

During the winter season, your trek leader will provide you with microspikes and gaiters depending upon the snow conditions.

20 minutes into the trek, you will come across the Brahmatal lake tucked into the middle of a lush clearing. The trail till the Brahmatal lake is a steep incline climbing steadily through open grasslands. In the winter season, this area is usually covered in a sheath of white snow making it no less than a Winter Wonderland while the lake glistens under the morning sunshine.

Beyond the lake, the trail ascends moderately and envelopes into a ridge. You will notice the Brahmatal lake retiring in the valley below as you steadily gain altitude. The first ridge is a stretch of gentle ascent that leads you to the final ridge climb.

The final ridge eventually opens up tp a breath-taking spectacle of snow-capped mountain ranges standing so close to you that you feel like you are watching them on a theatre screen. Try spotting Mt. Trishul, Mt. Nanda Ghunti, Mt. Chaukhamba, Mt. Neelkanth, Mt. Kamet and Mt. Hathi Ghoda amongst the ranges.

Although Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti accompany you throughout the trek, the close-up view from the summit is still thrilling to behold. Spend some time at the top immersing in the experience before heading back to the campsite.

Brahmatal (3400 M) to Lohajung (2331 M)

Distance: 11 kms

Duration: 7-8 hours

After having a scrumptious breakfast, we begin the descent back to Lohajung at 8 AM following the same route as the ascent. Be prepared for a long day of trekking.

The trail runs through thick Oak and Rhododendron forests. Eventually, you will come across little Shepherds huts which the locals use to keep their livestock. Following the man-made stone trail beyond that point, you will be descending to the mountain villages leading to Lohajung.

Expect to reach Lohajung in about 7-8 hours. You can then explore the slow and peaceful life at the village and learn about the various legends around the area. Do not miss the sunset in the evening. The orange rays brushing the Mt. Nanda Ghunti peak gently is lovely to watch. This is followed by a piping hot dinner at the guest house.

Departure from Lohajung (2331 M)

Distance: 294 kms

Duration: 11-12 hours

After morning tea, we will be starting for Dehradun early at 6-7 AM. The journey will once again take you through the three confluences of Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag and Devprayag. Expect to reach ISBT Dehradun by 6-7 PM.

In case, you plan on traveling back to Delhi the same night, consider booking a bus that starts at around 10-12 PM to account for any delays we might encounter on the way.

Small Group Size

Our batch sizes are capped at 15 for smaller treks with the trek leader and trekker ratio of 1:8. This ratio, in our years of experience, has proven to deliver the best trekking experience for individuals as well as groups. Capping the size of the group ensures individual attention to each trekker so that no signs of distress or need during the trek go unnoticed. It also helps to form a more cohesive cohort with better group energy which helps define the rhythm and pace of days on the trek. As you go higher up on the BRS scale, since the stakes are higher, expeditions have an even smaller group size with the ratio of expedition leader to climber set at 1:2.

A trek that has captured the hearts of beginner trekkers & winter trekking enthusiasts is the supremely beautiful Brahmatal Trek in Uttarakhand. Set amidst the Trishul range in Uttarakhand, the Brahmatal trek is a winter wonderland with magnificent close-up views of giant mountains surrounding the trail.

The breathtaking Brahmatal Lake!

Nestled in the deep heart of Uttarakhand is the gorgeous and extremely picturesque Brahmatal lake that can only be accessed through the Brahmatal trek. While the lake isn’t huge, it sits in the midst of a snow-carpeted meadow open on all sides with just one lone tree keeping it company. The lake is frozen through most seasons and is crystal clear when not iced up. While the lake is not directly on the trail, one would need to hike a little to come across this beauty. This is also close to one of the campsites on the trek. The lake remains unfrozen in spring and all through autumn and is good months to see the icy blue waters of the lake. Brahmatal is a name that is derived from Lord Brahma. The mythology mentions that Lord Brahma used to meditate on the Brahmatal lake. The lake is situated at an altitude of 3,400 m above sea level.

The Views from Brahmatal!

One of the many reasons we love the Brahmatal trek is because of the views of the giant mountains you find along the trail. While treks like Kedarkantha, Gorson Bugyal, Pangarchulla etc. give you great views of the Garhwal mountains, nothing comes close to what you see on the Brahmatal trail. While the Brahmatal trek starts from the Rhododendron forests, once you finish this climb, it opens up to a gigantic view of the wall of Mt. Trishul Massif (7,120 m/23,359 ft) that resembles a trident. Trust us when we say, you will be awestruck at the first glimpse. The views will get even bigger as you climb further up and you will also get a chance to see Mt. Nanda Ghunti (6309 m/20,698 ft). As you reach Brahmatal Top, you’ll also get up close to Mt. Neelkanth (6596 m/21,640 ft), and Mt. Hathi Ghoda (6729 m/22,070 ft). These views will definitely leave you wondering how minuscule we are amidst these giants.

The perfect winter trek!

Brahmatal trek best time to visit is the winter season. If you have an everlasting love for snow and winters, then this is one trek you must do. Considered to be one of the most popular winter treks in India, Brahmatal is a great trail for Nomads who are new to Himalayan trekking. This trek takes you through two Rhododendron and Oak forests, introduces you to two lakes – Brahmatal and Bekaltal Lakes shows off a gorgeous snow-carpeted meadow, and has campsites that look like a scene right out of Frozen! In peak winters the entire trail gets drenched in snow and you get to spend and camp for five days in a snowy wonderland. Brahmatal trek temperature in winter may range from -8°C to 5°C.

Great beginner trek with a Summit!

The Brahmatal trek covers the highest altitude of 3,733 m (12,250 ft) which is Brahmatal top. The overall brahmatal trek distance is of 30 Km which takes five days to complete. Brahmatal trek difficulty level is moderate. As the trek takes you through forests for most of the trail, the chances of getting Altitude Mountain Sickness is lesser here. The gradient of this trek is moderate which means that the climb is less steep as compared to Kedarkantha, however, the trek distance on each day will be longer. In the winters, you can expect to trek in knee-deep snow and experience snowfall every now and then. While you may require microspikes during the trek, there is no technical climb in this trek. While this is a beginner Himalayan trek, it is always recommended that you be physically fit when it comes to high-altitude treks.

On Day 2, you start traveling towards Lohajung from Rishikesh. This is an extremely scenic drive and will also see picturesque pine trees on the route today. When you arrive in Lohajung you will be greeted by the majestic Mt. Nanda Ghunti Peak. Lohajung is basically a small town located in Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. It is also the base for various popular treks like Roopkund, Brahmatal, and Bedni Bugyal. A good evening stroll around the village is perfect to fill up your Instagram feed & to get yourself warmed up for the trek the next morning. Stay the night at the hotel in Lohajung.

Day 3: Bekaltal

You will come across the Mandoli village as you cover a short distance post starting the trek. The trail is well laid out and as you go higher up, you will start seeing the Kali Valley where the rivers Kali and Pindari meet. You need to keep trekking from here and after a certain point, when you reach approx 2,590 m (8,500 ft), you will come across a beautiful wooden bridge of about 10 meters right above a stream. You can stop to fill up your bottles at this stream. When you cross the bridge and trek a little further, you will reach Begum a resting point with views of the magical meadows seen in the distance. As you start trekking again you come across two more streams, the last one being Gujrani Stream. It takes about an hour from Gujrani Stream to reach the beautiful Bekaltal campsite. This last distance takes you through an Oak forest which is a moderate climb. As you reach Bekaltal you will start seeing views of the giant Mt. Trishul on the horizon.

Bekaltal is your campsite for the day and a 10-minute hike from Bekaltal will take you to the Bekaltal lake while lies amidst Oak trees. The water of this lake is brown unlike that of Brahmatal lake. In winters you will notice a thin sheet of ice formed over the lake. You will notice how quickly time flies when you sit by the Bekaltal lake and just reminisce your journey through the day.

Dinner will be served in the main tent post which you can go to sleep in your allotted tents.

Day 4: Brahmatal

On day 4 you start your day early with a scrumptious breakfast at the Bekaltal campsite. Post this, you start packing the essentials for the day. Once everyone is ready you start trekking towards the next stop which is the Brahmatal Campsite. The climb will take you through Oak and Rhododendron trees and then a winding ascending trail as you make your way to the next campsite. If you start early enough you can get good sights of the mountains around before the clouds set in. If the skies are clear, you'll have breathtaking views of the mountains all through the trail with views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti specifically. You will constantly gain and drop height as you traverse through the trail today. You will sometimes walk right beside the treeline and sometimes right above it. The treeline will mostly have Rhododendron or Oak trees. You start ascending steep when you climb towards Jhandi Top which becomes the highest point of the ridge.  You can see the mountains in a panorama here and the Roopkund trail is visible from here as well.

The view at Jhandi Top will leave you awestruck. You spend some time here before you start your descent towards Brahmatal which is about 1.5 km from Jhandi Top.

You can unwind at the campsite and relax for the day.

Day 5:   Brahmatal Top

From the campsite, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the Brahmatal Lake which is the first stop along the trail to the summit. The lake sits right in the midst of a meadow and the trail leading up to the lake is a gradual ascent. The lake in winters remain frozen and when visited in spring and autumn shows off it's crystal clear beautiful blue waters. The break at the lake also presents a good photo opportunity while we discourage and do not allow nomads to walk on the lake at any given point in time. The lake is accompanied by a lone tree that has snow all over during winters.

The next step to keep trekking until you find a ridge and from here you get a good view of the entire lake. Again, a great photo opportunity. The first ridge climb is a gentle ascent leading up to the final ridge to the summit. The ridge then opens up to the marvelous views of the mountains you saw at Jhandi Top. This is where you will be resting for lunch. After a 20 minute break you start trekking again but this time it's a descent with mountains to your right and the entire valley to your left. You will now come across closer views of Mt. Trishul, Mt. Nanda Ghunti, and 180 degree views of the entire mountain range with Chaukambha, Mt. Neelkanth, Mt. Mandi, Mt. Nilgiri and many more peaks. This is Brahmatal Top. This is the highest brahmatal trek altitude of 12,250 ft (3,734 m).

Your campsite for the night Daldum is about 3 hours from the Brahmatal Top and you start descending into a forest after spending some time at Brahmatal Top.

Harsh Sentence for Putin Critic Highlights Kremlin’s Repression

A Moscow court sentenced Vladimir Kara-Murza to 25 years in prison, making it clear that any criticism of the war can lead to prison time.

By Anton Troianovski and Ivan Nechepurenko

A Moscow court on Monday sentenced an outspoken critic of the Kremlin to 25 years in prison, an unusually harsh punishment that underscores President Vladimir V. Putin’s increasing determination to equate dissent with treason.

The sentence given to Vladimir Kara-Murza, an opposition activist and journalist who had urged the American government to impose sanctions on Russian officials, is longer than what is often given for murder in Russia, and greater than the time being served by other imprisoned Putin critics, like Aleksei A. Navalny.

It represents the latest chilling example of the Kremlin’s wartime repression 14 months after the invasion of Ukraine, and comes less than three weeks after the arrest on espionage charges of Evan Gershkovich, an American correspondent for The Wall Street Journal based in Russia.

“We live in 2023, in the 21st century,” Mr. Kara-Murza’s mother, Yelena Gordon, told reporters outside the courthouse after the sentencing. “What is this? What is happening?”

Mr. Kara-Murza, 41, who writes a column for The Washington Post’s opinion section, was arrested in Moscow a year ago after condemning the war in Ukraine and charged with spreading “fake” information about the Russian military. In October, Russian prosecutors added a charge of treason, alleging that he had betrayed his country by criticizing Mr. Putin’s rule in public appearances in the United States and Europe, according to Mr. Kara-Murza’s lawyer.

The 25-year sentence handed down on Monday combined the penalties in those two cases, as well as another sentence added last summer for participation in an “undesirable organization.”

It was a reminder that whatever its struggles to assert control on the battlefields of Ukraine, the Kremlin is firmly in charge at home, and prepared to brand any domestic critics as enemies of the state.

“Traitors and betrayers,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement about Mr. Kara-Murza on Monday, “will get what they deserve.”

Mr. Kara-Murza had long drawn the Kremlin’s ire, and survived what he characterized several years ago as two state-sponsored attempts to poison him.

Both inside Russia and in the West, Mr. Kara-Murza, who has Russian and British citizenship, spoke out against Mr. Putin and his invasion of Ukraine; last year, hours before his detention, he called Russia’s rulers “a regime of murderers” in an interview with CNN.

In London, the British government said it had summoned the Russian ambassador to protest Mr. Kara-Murza’s conviction as “contrary to Russia’s international obligations on human rights, including the right to a fair trial.” The State Department called Mr. Kara-Murza “yet another target of the Russian government’s escalating campaign of repression,” while the United Nations human rights office declared his sentence “a blow to the rule of law.”

Russia’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the international criticism as “an attempt to exert pressure on the Russian judicial system” that was “doomed to failure.” Referring to “traitors” like Mr. Kara-Murza who “are applauded in the West,” the ministry said: “Their foreign handlers will not help them avoid a just punishment.”

Mr. Putin did not comment publicly on Mr. Kara-Murza’s sentencing, but he has repeatedly exhorted Russia’s law enforcement and security agencies to escalate their hunt for opponents of his leadership, whom the Kremlin increasingly defines as agents trying to topple Mr. Putin on America’s behalf.

“I’m asking you to react harshly to attempts to destabilize the social and political situation in the country,” Mr. Putin said in a speech to Russian prosecutors last month.

In the Russian justice system, verdicts are often foregone conclusions, especially for opponents of the Kremlin. It was the length of the prison term that was bracing.

Mr. Kara-Murza’s sentence far exceeds that of Mr. Navalny, the most prominent Russian opposition figure, who initially received a two-and-a-half-year prison term in 2021 and was given another nine-year sentence last year . And though it appears to be the longest handed down to a Kremlin critic in the last year, hundreds of others are also facing yearslong prison terms for speaking out against the war, human rights groups say.

Ilya Yashin, an opposition leader, was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison in December; the authorities accused him of spreading false information about atrocities committed in the Ukrainian city of Bucha by Russian troops.

For Mr. Kara-Murza, the activity that appeared to bring him directly into the Kremlin’s cross hairs was his campaign in Washington more than a decade ago for the Magnitsky Act, which punished officials deemed responsible for the death of a tax lawyer in a Russian jail.

One of the Russians who fell under those sanctions after Congress passed the measure in 2012 was Sergei Podoprigorov — the same judge who delivered Monday’s sentence against Mr. Kara-Murza in Moscow City Court.

Mr. Kara-Murza’s attorney, Vadim Prokhorov, said that the clear “conflict of interest” on display with Mr. Podoprigorov presiding over Mr. Kara-Murza’s case made it plain that the entire proceeding was a sham.

“Everybody knows that Vladimir himself is one of the main initiators and promoters of the Magnitsky Act,” Mr. Prokhorov said at a panel discussion hosted by The Washington Post on Monday, referring to Mr. Kara-Murza. “This case had nothing to do with justice. It is just political revenge against Vladimir.”

Fred Ryan, the publisher of The Post, said that both Mr. Kara-Murza and The Journal’s Mr. Gershkovich were “real-time examples of the risks that journalists face and the need for all of us to use our voices to call for our elected leaders to take every possible step to secure their release.”

In February, Mr. Prokhorov said that Mr. Kara-Murza had been put into solitary confinement, where his health began to deteriorate rapidly. Last month, Mr. Prokhorov said that doctors had diagnosed his client with polyneuropathy, a serious nerve disorder that manifested itself in the numbness of his feet, a condition that was caused by his poisonings.

“This disease is difficult to treat even in freedom and moreover it’s absolutely difficult, maybe impossible, to treat in the conditions of the prison,” Evgenia Kara-Murza, Mr. Kara-Murza’s wife, said at Monday’s event in Washington. “It’s possible to claim that this long years imprisonment for him is quite some kind of death penalty.”

Mr. Kara-Murza’s supporters said the length of the sentence evoked the terror of the Stalin era — and of the repression faced by his own family.

Two of Mr. Kara-Murza’s great-grandfathers were executed as spies and “enemies of the people” during Stalin’s purges, according to Meduza, a Russian news website. His grandfather was arrested in 1937 and served a sentence in labor camps in Russia’s Far East. His father, Vladimir Kara-Murza Sr., was a prominent Russian liberal journalist until his death in 2019.

Mr. Kara-Murza, jailed last April, continued writing his Washington Post column from prison, and has sought to rally Western support for Russian dissidents. In a January piece, for instance, he criticized Western governments for not having acted more aggressively in the early years of Mr. Putin’s rule to promote media freedom in Russia.

Supporting independent Russian media now operating from exile, he went on, is among “the most important steps the free world could take to further undermine the Kremlin’s hateful messaging.”

In his final address to the court last week, Mr. Kara-Murza likened the current climate in Russia to the Stalin years.

“The day will come when the darkness over our country will dissipate,” he said. “When black will be called black, and white will be called white; when at the official level, it will be recognized that two times two is still four; when a war will be called a war, and a usurper a usurper.”
