Here Are all the Cruise Lines That Have Canceled Russia Sailings

Poseidon Expeditions is the latest addition, canceling seven itineraries

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, cruise line after cruise line has altered itineraries with stops in Russian ports or canceled voyages entirely.

Poseidon Expeditions is the latest addition to this list after a March 17 statement announcing that seven polar voyages are canceled for the summer. An additional four Arctic sailings have new itineraries. "The terrible situation in Ukraine makes planned operations in Russian waters untenable, and we cannot support promoting these trips in any way for the 2022 season," said Angelica Vorea, founder and CEO of parent company Poseidon Arctic Voyages, Ltd.

Carnival Cruise Line, Windstar, and Atlas Ocean Voyages were some of the first big names to announce that they scrapped all stops in St. Petersburg. Carnival announced via Twitter they will be swapping Russia out of all current cruise itineraries in the coming week "once alternative ports can be confirmed." In the same post, the cruise line's holding company, Carnival Corporation, stood by Ukraine in light of the attacks, declaring, "We stand for peace."

Royal Caribbean Group released a statement canceling stops in St. Petersburg for summer 2022 sailings for all its brands, including Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, and Silver Sea. "We have planned alternative ports and will communicate itinerary changes in the next few days to our guests and travel partners. Guests can feel comfortable knowing they are able to reschedule their cruise with our Cruise with Confidence program," the statement read.

MSC Cruises, which had four ships scheduled to call in St. Petersburg beginning this May, announced it had suspended all Russian stops and was in negotiations for possible alternative options, including Stockholm, Helsinki, and Tallinn.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings also announced that they would remove Russian and Ukrainian ports from 2022 itineraries across their brands, including Norwegian, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas.

"It's disappointing because St. Petersburg is one of the crown jewels of the Scandinavian itineraries," said Frank Del Rio, CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, during the company's earnings call last Thursday.

Regent Seven Seas had particularly significant plans for Russia this year, with several stacked itineraries, including the Solovetsky Islands, Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, St. Petersburg, and Odessa, Ukraine. Norwegian Cruise Line canceled a majority of its Baltic sailings on the Norwegian Getaway. Some cruise lines are forgoing modification and canceling their itineraries outright. The luxury river cruise line, Scenic, scrapped all of its 2022 Russia cruises. Viking River Cruises canceled all Russian river cruises and its planned Kyiv, Black Sea & Bucharest routes this year due to the events. Russian stops on Viking's ocean itineraries will be modified, and impacted guests and travel advisors will be notified.

The cancellations add to the ripple effect Russia's invasion of Ukraine has caused throughout the travel industry. Earlier in March, travel expert and television personality Rick Steves announced he would be canceling all Russian tours that his company, Rick Steves' Europe, had planned this year.

"Our mission ... is to help Americans better know and understand our neighbors through travel," Steves wrote in a blog post from late February. "But when we bring travelers to another country, we also bring their dollars—dollars that would support Putin's aggression. Therefore, as of today, we have canceled all 2022 tours that include a stop in Russia."

Baltic summer 2022 itineraries to call alternative ports in Stockholm, Helsinki or Tallinn

Geneva, Switzerland, 28 February 2022 - MSC Cruises today announced that it has suspended its ships’ calls to St Petersburg, Russia due to recent developments in the region and related security concerns.

The Company said the health and safety of its passengers and crew was its top priority and that from the end of May until October its four ships with Baltic Sea sailings that had included St Petersburg in any of their summer 2022 itineraries – MSC Preziosa, MSC Grandiosa , MSC Poesia and MSC Virtuosa - will all suspend their calls to the Russian city.

Since the onset of the current events the line has been in touch with alternative ports - such as Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn - to confirm calls for the four vessels and it will communicate the exact details for each individual sailing as soon as possible to travel agents and any customers affected by the new arrangements.

MSC Cruises will also update its website to reflect the confirmed details of the new itineraries to provide maximum clarity for existing guests as well as for anyone looking to book future holidays at sea in the Baltic Sea.

No MSC Cruises’ ship currently calls St Petersburg.

A number of cruise lines including MSC Cruises, P&O Cruises and Fred. Olsen have amended upcoming Baltic sailings due to the ongoing Russia and Ukraine war .

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has already caused airspace closures , while the Foreign Office has changed its advice warning Brits against all travel to Russia.

Cruise lines have already begun to amend their itineraries as a result of the conflict.

MSC Cruises has announced it is suspending ports of call to St Petersburg, while Carnival Corp - the group behind the likes of Princess Cruises - said it would be modifying itineraries, adding in a statement, 'We stand for peace".

Meanwhile other companies such as P&O Cruises and Fred Olsen have also announced plans to amend sailings - Fred Olsen is already revising a May itinerary onboard cruise ship Balmoral.

We take a look at the cruise lines amending Baltic cruises below...

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises has announced that it will be suspending four ships' ports of call to St Petersburg in Russia.

The cruise line has said that it will be suspending ports of call to the city planned between May and October, "due to recent developments in the region and related security concerns".

Currently none of the MSC ships call at St Petersburg, but the city was on the itinerary for sailings this summer on MSC Preziosa, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Poesia and MSC Virtuosa.

The company said that the health and safety of its passengers and crew was its "top priority", and that it was already working with other destinations to find alternative ports such as Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn.

It added that affected customers will be contacted directly by travel agents to discuss the exact details and new arrangements.

Carnival Corporation

Carnival Corporation, the parent group to brands such as Princess Cruises, said in a statement: "In light of the recent attacks by Russia in Ukraine, Carnival Corporation brands will be modifying our itineraries in the coming week once alternative ports can be confirmed. We stand for peace.”

Viking Cruises

A Viking spokesperson told the Mirror: "We are deeply opposed to the unfolding conflict in Ukraine and are heartbroken for all the people who are impacted. On 24 February we cancelled all 2022 departures of our Ukraine river itinerary. On 1 March we made the decision to cease all operations in Russia in 2022. Therefore, we have cancelled all 2022 departures of our Russia river itineraries—and will replace scheduled stops in Russia for all 2022 ocean itineraries. Guests and their travel agents on impacted departures are in the process of being notified.

"As a company that has been helping people explore the world for 25 years, we strongly believe in the power of travel to build connections between cultures. At this time, we are continuing to evaluate our 2023 itineraries. We remain hopeful for a quick resolution to the current conflict. Our team is actively monitoring the situation and will keep our guests up to date as necessary."

Fred. Olsen

Peter Deer, Managing Director at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said in a statement: "The safety of our guests and crew is always our number one priority, and we are monitoring the situation in Russia and Ukraine very closely.

"Our first cruise calling into either of these nations was due to be in May, aboard our ship Balmoral, and we have already taken the decision to revise this itinerary. Rather than visiting the Russian city of St Petersburg as planned, we have changed our course and our guests will now call into Stockholm and Visby in Sweden.

"We remain in close contact with our destination partners in this part of the world and will continue to monitor all of our sailings to this region. We will, of course, keep our guests informed of any changes to their cruises."

P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises said that it will be amending its Baltic cruises itineraries, although it hasn't yet shared specific details.

A statement from the cruise line explained: "In light of the current situation with Russia and Ukraine we will be amending itineraries on Baltic cruises.

"Our top priority is compliance, environmental protection and the health, safety and well-being of our guests, crew members, shoreside employees and the people in the places we touch and we will advise guests of the changes as soon as possible."

Royal Caribbean

The cruise line is "monitoring events" and has planned for alternative ports of call. A spokesperson for the company said: "The safety of our guests and crew is always our top priority. We are continuously monitoring events taking place around the world, including the situation in Ukraine.

"With the recent events, we have made the decision to cancel our visits to St. Petersburg, Russia on all Summer 2022 itineraries. We have planned alternative ports and will communicate itinerary changes in the next few days to our guests and travel partners. Guests can feel comfortable knowing they are able to reschedule their cruise with our Cruise with Confidence program."

MSC Cruises suspended all calls to Saint Petersburg (Russia) for 2022 due to the recent developments in the region and security concerns.

The 4 ships that were scheduled to call at St. Petersburg port on their summer 2022 cruises ( MSC Grandiosa , MSC Poesia , MSC Preziosa , and MSC Virtuosa ) will no longer visit the Russian city from late May through October due to the safety of passengers and crew members as a top priority, MSC Cruises announced.

Since the current events commenced, MSC Cruises has been in contact with alternative cruise ports such as Stockholm (Sweden) , Helsinki (Finland) , or Tallinn (Estonia) in order to confirm the visits for the upcoming sailings. Customers affected by the new regulations or their travel agents will be informed of each individual voyage ASAP.

MSC Cruises said it would update its website in order to reflect the details of the new itineraries in a timely manner. The line will provide maximum clarity for both passengers who have booked and those wishing to reserve a Baltic Sea voyage in the future.

On a river cruise in Russia you’ll likely visit two of this expansive country’s most important cities, St. Petersburg and Moscow. St. Petersburg has always been more of a city focused on the arts and Moscow on business and politics. Tolstoy even remarked about this dichotomy in his masterpiece novel Anna Karenina . In St. Petersburg you’ll find the ornate Hermitage Museum, an art museum which was started by Catherine the Great. In Moscow you’ll be wowed by the colorful onion domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral at Red Square. When cruising through Russia you’ll also get a chance to experience the rural parts of Western Russia in Goritsy or the Mandrogi village, which is reconstructed to look just as it did during the 18 th century.

Things to Do on a Cruise to Russia

Adopt the pluck and determination of the Russian people and realize that there is nothing you can’t do on your cruise to Russia. Russia is full of crazy stories, exciting history and beautiful traditions, so drink it in with some unforgettable experiences. A few of our favorite things to do are outlined below:

Russia Cruises Kremlin Palace and Wall in Moscow, Russia

  • Explore the armory at the Kremlin where you can see the stunning royal jewels of the czars and czarinas. Don’t forget to check out the Faberge eggs, intricately decorated and jewel-adorned eggs created in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
  • Visit a wooden church with 22 domes that is made without one single nail. This remarkable building is in Kizhi Island surrounded by other buildings at an open air museum.

Russia Cruises Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia

  • Spend a day discovering the more than 3 million works that make up the Hermitage Museum, which is housed in the Winter Palace, a former home of Russian royals located in St. Petersburg.
  • Though ballet comes from Italy, Russia has made this elegant dance form what it is today. Be sure to enjoy a performance at either the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow or the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.

Russia Cruises GUM Department Store in Moscow, Russia

  • Enjoy a Shashlik lunch. Shashlik is a Russian variation of a shish kebab which generally consists of grilled beef or cubed lamb that is been marinated and is roasted on a spit often paired with a variety of vegetables such as tomato, onion and eggpant.  This is a popular fast food dish in Russia.
  • Go to GUM, Moscow's exorbitant shopping mall, to shop (or just browse) through one designer store after the other.

Map of Russia:

Top 10 russia cruises, russia: cruise lines.

River cruise lines offer in-depth visits to Russia where you’ll get a real sense of the nation’s culture – from the big cities to the rural outposts. Each day is packed with history, art and tradition.

Russia: Departure Ports

Russian river cruises either flow north or south, meaning they either start in St. Petersburg or Moscow. Moscow is the current capital of the country, but St. Petersburg used to hold that title and was the home of many of the country’s czars. Both of these large cities offer great art museums and incredible domed churches. No matter where your river cruise starts, you’ll get a real sense of Russian culture as St. Petersburg offers an exploration of Russian history while Moscow is on the cutting edge and looking forward.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on an MSC Cruises ship

Gene Sloan

Are you looking for the best cruise itineraries offered by MSC Cruises ? You have plenty of options.

The world's third-biggest cruise line by passenger capacity offers voyages in almost every corner of the world, from Asia and Europe to the Caribbean and South America.

MSC Cruises currently has 22 cruise ships in operation, more than all but a handful of other major cruise lines.

That allows it to deploy vessels on all the classic cruise itineraries in the Caribbean and Europe while still having ships left over for more exotic routes.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

That said, MSC Cruises has a distinct focus on Europe, where it's the biggest cruise operator. In a typical summer, the Switzerland-based line deploys the vast majority of its ships in the Mediterranean or in Northern Europe, and many of the best MSC Cruises itineraries are in Europe.

Even in the winter, when many lines move all their vessels out of Europe to warmer locales, MSC Cruises will keep several ships in the Mediterranean and often at least one vessel in Northern Europe.

During summers, MSC Cruises usually only has a couple of ships posted outside of Europe — typically in the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

During winters, the line adds more ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas and also sends a significant number to South America, South Africa and the Persian Gulf. The line is the largest cruise operator by capacity in all three of the latter destinations.

In addition, MSC Cruises typically offers an around-the-world cruise in the winter on a single ship.

Here are the five best destinations you can visit on an MSC Cruises voyage.

msc cruises russia

MSC Cruises got its start offering cruises in Europe, mostly to a European crowd, and Europe remains its biggest focus. The line offers a wide range of itineraries across every corner of the continent, from the Mediterranean to the far reaches of Northern Europe.

Among the line's signature routings are seven-night sailings in the Western Mediterranean that offer the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona, Rome and Cannes, France, in a single cruise. Or, you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise focusing on the Greek islands and Turkey.

In Northern Europe, MSC Cruises will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Helsinki, Stockholm and Tallinn, Estonia, in a single sailing. Until recently, such trips also often included a stop in St. Petersburg, Russia, but calls at St. Petersburg are on hold indefinitely due to the war in Ukraine.

Multiple itineraries that zero in on the Norwegian fjords are also available.

In all, the line traditionally deploys around a dozen vessels to the Mediterranean each year during summers and five more to Northern Europe. Voyages range from four to 10 nights in length.

Among the longest sailings that MSC Cruises offers in Europe are 10-night trips out of Marseille, France, that include visits to Malaga, Cadiz, Alicante and Port Mahon, Spain (located on the island of Menorca in the Balearic Islands); Lisbon; and Olbia (on the island of Sardinia) and Genoa, Italy.

In Northern Europe, MSC Cruises ships mostly sail out of Southampton, England; Copenhagen; and Kiel and Hamburg in Germany.

In the Mediterranean, the line's main hubs are Ancona, Venice, Genoa, Naples, Palermo, Bari and Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) in Italy; Barcelona, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca in Spain; and Marseille, France.

Note that MSC Cruises voyages in Europe are often heavily filled with Europeans speaking Italian, German, Spanish and French, as well as some English speakers.

In Europe, the line offers onboard programming in all five of these languages (all crew members speak English no matter where the ships are sailing).

Reality check: Due to the diverse origins of passengers on European sailings, the line also typically makes announcements in all five of the aforementioned languages on these trips. This can result in extraordinarily long announcements at times, which can be a distraction to some cruisers.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

msc cruises russia

MSC Cruises isn't the biggest player in the Caribbean and the Bahamas . But its footprint in the region has grown notably in recent years as it has expanded its fleet at a rapid pace and pursued a strategy of wooing more Americans.

In 2017, the line only had a single vessel based in North America for sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas. But that number has grown to three in recent years and, as of this winter, is jumping to five with the addition of two more ships (MSC Magnifica and MSC Divina) sailing out of U.S. ports.

The five vessels — MSC Magnifica, MSC Divina, MSC Seashore, MSC Seascape and MSC Meraviglia — will mostly operate seven-night sailings in the region that either focus on the Eastern Caribbean or Western Caribbean.

Eastern Caribbean itineraries at MSC Cruises typically call at Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Nassau, the Bahamas; and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve , the line's private island in the Bahamas.

Western Caribbean itineraries at MSC Cruises typically call at Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Cayman Islands; Cozumel, Mexico; and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

In North America, MSC Cruises ships have historically sailed to the Caribbean and the Bahamas out of Miami . But the line recently added voyages from Port Canaveral and New York City.

Related: This new New York-based cruise ship is bigger than the city's biggest hotel

Specifically, for the coming winter of 2023-24, the five MSC Cruises ships based in North America will sail from:

  • MSC Seascape: Miami
  • MSC Divina: Miami
  • MSC Magnifica: Miami
  • MSC Seashore: Port Canaveral
  • MSC Meraviglia: New York City

In addition, the line offers cruises to the Caribbean from the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Martinique and Guadeloupe.

The relatively recent opening of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve was a major development for the line — its first private island in North America.

Offering beaches, water sports, food outlets and bars, it's a major stop for a large number of MSC Cruises sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas.

Note that MSC Cruises' North America-based ships are marketed heavily to Americans, and the line has tailored some of the features and activities on the vessels that sail in the region to a North American crowd.

Notably, on MSC Cruises sailings out of U.S. ports, only safety announcements are made in five languages. Other announcements are in English only.

Related: The 6 types of MSC Cruises ships, explained

msc cruises russia

MSC Cruises in 2023 significantly expanded its footprint in North America with its first regular sailings from the East Coast of the U.S. to Bermuda .

The line is now operating six-night voyages to the destination each summer out of New York City on one of its newest, biggest ships — the 4,500-passenger MSC Meraviglia. The vessel began sailing from New York City in April 2023, becoming the first MSC Cruises ship to sail year-round from the city.

The new Bermuda sailings begin at New York City's Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, where MSC Meraviglia is based, and feature three full days docked at Bermuda's King's Wharf. They take place seasonally during August and September.

Like MSC Cruises' Caribbean and Bahamas sailings, the Bermuda voyages cater to a North American crowd, particularly travelers in the Northeast who can reach the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal by car.

Eastern Canada and New England

msc cruises russia

Also new as of 2023 are MSC Cruises' first sailings in four years from New York City to Eastern Canada and New England .

Operated by MSC Meraviglia, these sailings range from 10- to 16-night trips timed to coincide with the fall leaf-peeping season in the region, with departures in September and October. The ship also offers some Eastern Canada and New England sailings in April and May.

On the shorter end of the itineraries are 10-night voyages that bring stops in Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Portland, Maine; St. John's, Newfoundland; Sydney, Nova Scotia; and Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

An 11-night itinerary adds in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to the above schedule, and a 16-night itinerary adds in a three-day stay in Bermuda.

The latter itinerary is actually a combination sailing that pairs the 10-night Eastern Canada and New England sailing mentioned above with a six-night Bermuda sailing.

Like MSC Cruises' new Bermuda sailings out of New York City's Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, the new Eastern Canada and New England voyages are aimed primarily at North American travelers.

Eastern Canada and New England is a relatively new destination for MSC Cruises. The line offered a brief season of voyages to the region out of New York City in 2019.

The Persian Gulf

msc cruises russia

In recent years, MSC Cruises has become a major player in the growing market for winter sailings in the warm waters of the Persian Gulf. The trips include stops at such destinations as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, as well as nearby Oman.

Drawing Europeans and some Americans in addition to local residents of the region, the voyages offer a warm-weather escape from colder climates in the winter. They also provide a chance to explore local cultural sites such as the Muttrah Souk and Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat, Oman.

In a typical year, MSC Cruises deploys two ships to the region during the winter for a range of three- to nine-night voyages out of Dubai.

Among the line's most common itineraries in the region are seven-night sailings out of Dubai that stop in Abu Dhabi and Sir Bani Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates; and Muscat and Khasab, Oman.

In addition, the line offers seven-night sailings out of Dubai during the winter with stops in Abu Dhabi and Sir Bani Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates; Damman, Saudi Arabia; and Doha, Qatar.

Note that for the winter of 2023-24, the line has canceled many of its sailings in the Middle East as a safety precaution due to the outbreak of war between Israeli and Hamas forces in the region.

Bottom line

MSC Cruises has one of the biggest fleets of oceangoing cruise ships in the world, and that allows it to offer a wide range of itineraries.

If you're looking for the best MSC Cruises itinerary, you'll have no shortage of choices.

The line is perhaps best known for its Europe sailings — at certain times of the year, it deploys almost all its ships to the region. But you'll also find a solid array of MSC Cruises itineraries in the Caribbean and Bahamas, and the line is diversifying its offerings in North America to include new voyages out of New York City to Bermuda and New England.

MSC Cruises is offering monumental savings on sailings to warm weather destinations starting at less than $200 per person.

The sale, which was extended and must be booked by April 18, offers cruises starting at just $179 per person, according to MSC. The sale rate is based on double occupancy and does not include the taxes, fees, or port expenses.

Travelers who take advantage of this deeply-discounted rate can sail on three and four night journeys from Miami for just $179, or from Orlando starting at just $189, MSC shared with Travel + Leisure .

“It’s a great opportunity, whether you’re curious about cruising for the first time or you’re an avid cruiser looking to book your next sailing,” Koreen McNutt, the senior vice president and commercial sales officer for MSC Cruises USA, told T+L. “These quick getaways let guests discover everything we have to offer from world-class onboard entertainment and outstanding family programming to a variety of delicious dining venues and wonderful amenities. Plus, these short cruises all visit our private island in The Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, with beautiful white-sand beaches and pristine water brimming with vibrant marine life.”

The sale also includes MSC’s cruises from Galveston , which the company plans to introduce as its newest homeport in the United States in 2025. The cruise line expects to sail 7-night trips to Mexico and Central America on the MSC Seascape out of Galveston, which start at just $459 per person during the sale.

In addition, MSC is offering savings on its newest ship, the MSC World America , which the company plans to launch next year complete with a thrilling over-water swing ride, 13 different restaurants, an 11-deck-high dry slide, and more. Cruises on this ship start at just $649 per person as part of the sale.

“Cruising offers an unbeatable value proposition for vacations and we’re offering more itinerary options from a larger selection of embarkation ports than ever before, which makes it even easier for more people to discover what MSC Cruises is all about,” McNutt added.

Beyond the cruise fare, MSC is offering the option for travelers to add a drink package and Wi-FI to their booking starting at just $329.

MADRID (AP) — Spain will on Thursday deport more than 60 Bolivians who arrived last week by cruise ship in the northeastern port of Barcelona but were not allowed to disembark because their visas were false.

The Spanish government’s office in Barcelona said 65 of the 69 Bolivians who arrived will be flown to the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz. The plane will be paid for by MSC Cruises, which owns the ship in which they arrived from Brazil.

Four members of a family with Spanish relatives will be allowed to enter Spain.

Spanish authorities said the Bolivian passengers had false visas to enter the European border-free Schengen area, an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries.

The Bolivians’ visa problems meant that the cruise ship with more than 1,000 passengers was stuck for two days in Barcelona and unable to continue on its route in the Mediterranean Sea until the situation was resolved.

The cruise ship set sail after the Bolivians were temporarily accommodated in another boat while police interviewed them.

MSC Cruises said last week the Bolivian passengers’ documentation appeared correct upon boarding in Brazil.
