Night one of NOFX’s last ever European tour perfectly illustrates why Fat Mike’s crew will be treasured forever as true punk rock rebels

Nofx launch their '40 years, 40 cities, 40 songs per day' european tour in barcelona, and remind us why they're the greatest punk band of their generation.

When any band announces a final tour nowadays, we take such declarations with a mountain of salt. Black Sabbath . Kiss. Mötley Crüe . All bands who’ve rinsed the whole “final tour” concept for every last dime. Even Texan pop-punkers Bowling For Soup got in on the action back in 2013 - only to return to the live music scene in 2016. Just last week, Sum 41 declared their retirement from touring with a final run of shows planned for the not-too-distant future. I guess this is growing up.  So when legendary So-Cal punk rockers NOFX declared last year that they were calling time on their acclaimed 40 year career, the news was met with a certain amount of scepticism. Presumably this was another of punk rock provocateur Fat Mike's little jokes? But no, when this writer spoke with NOFX's band leader hot off the heels of said surprise announcement, he assured me of his group’s intentions. “I need it to end,” he told me. “I’m tired of being Fat Mike on stage. There’s so many other things I want to do in life. Every show on this last tour will be completely different. I’m so excited to play them. It’s going to be really special. And we’re not doing the whole Black Sabbath/Mötley Crüe thing. On October 6, 2024 in LA, that will be the last time NOFX ever plays.”

Time will tell. But one thing remains undisputed at this stage in the game: if this is indeed the end, NOFX are going out on the highest of all highs – drug-related puns aside.

This writer has been lucky enough to have seen the band (rounded out by guitarists Eric Melvin and El Hefe and drummer Erik “Smelly” Sandin, plus touring keyboardist Karina Denike) live on countless occasions over the last 25 years. During that time, their performances have ranged from sublime to shitty. NOFX themselves would be the first to tell you that professionalism and consistency have never been high on the agenda. This, after all, is the band who called their first live album, I Heard They Suck Live . And as Fat Mike sings on the opening track to Wolves in Wolves’ Clothing , 60% , a song that’s become something of an overall mission statement for the band, “ I'm not here to entertain you, I'm here to meet my friend the Russian, the Irish, the German, the Colombian. I don't care how bad I fuck up, I care about how fucked up I get. I'm not your clown, I'm your dealer .” So imagine the crowd’s surprise when NOFX take to the stage at Poble Espanyol in Barcelona for the first of their final European shows, and we’re greeted by a well-oiled, finely tuned, actually in-tune machine.  By Fat Mike’s own admission, the band have been rehearsing. As a result, they’re remarkably well prepared for the occasion. It’s evident that they care about putting on a great show, too. And there’s an overriding sense of humility, commitment and gratitude on display throughout the band’s epic two-and-a-half hour set that’s been hitherto hidden beneath a sea of self-deprecating humour and schtick.

All of that’s still here in abundance, of course. Topped up with a healthy dose of bad taste banter and politically incorrect jokes. Some things never change. Nor would we ever want them to. But NOFX are clearly intent on giving their fans nothing short of 110% tonight, and this evening’s show is by far and away the best this writer has ever seen them play. With three gigs across the weekend and different records scheduled to be performed in their entirety alongside sample selections from the greatest songs ever written (by them), tonight’s crowd is treated to a haphazard hybrid of two all-time classic albums - So Long & Thanks For All The Shoes and White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean - and an additional assortment of nuggets from one of the best back catalogues in punk rock.  The setlist alone is enough to lay claim to the fact that NOFX are indeed the greatest and most important punk band of their generation, the likes of which we will never see again. And if the scenes from tonight’s sold out crowd confirm anything, it’s that this band mean an awful lot to an awful lot of people. There’s going to be a great big NOFX-shaped hole in our hearts once they’re gone. So long, fellas. And thanks for all the shoes.

Formed in 1983 in Los Angeles, California, NOFX is an American punk rock/ ska punk band currently consisting of members, Fat Mike, El Hefe, Eric Melvin and Erik Sandin.

In 1983 Mike Burkett (Fat Mike) and Eric Melvin met and started the band, and were later joined by Erik Sandin. The group released their first album in 1985 with Mystic Records. The band then underwent a lineup change, but through the changes, the original three members remained intact. In 1986 the band released an album attacking the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) for their campaign against music censorship with “The P.M.R.C Can Suck On This.” Following this album was “Liberal Animation” in 1988, which was recorded with Bad Religion’s Brett Gurewitz.

The collaboration with Gurewitz led to the band signing with Epitaph Records, and releasing their third studio album “Ribbed.” Shortly after the release, Aaron Abeyta, aka El Hefe, replaced Steve Kidwiller on guitar, followed by “White Trash, Two Heebs and A Bean” being released in 1992. In 1994 they released their best selling album, “Punk in Drublic” and received support from the mainstream media, as well as reaching certified gold.

Following a series of record releases that all fared well, the band made the move to sign with Fat Wreck Chords in 2005. The band continued to release albums that challenged the social and political systems that they didn’t agree with, and did so in true punk fashion.

Live reviews

NOFX, as many bands playing the main stage at the Reading Festival do, once performed in front of a banner stating their name. No surprises there, except theirs was about the size of a tea towel, visible to only the front few rows (who found the whole thing hilarious, of course). As an act, it pretty much summed up what makes them continually endearing – their refusal to pander to the rock and roll game, and a bratty sense of humour that still dictates the legendary punk rock band’s every decision even as they enter middle age. They might never have had a hit, but the devotion of their fans is palpable, with everyone from those in their early teens to hardened, Mohawk sporting gentlemen who can remember a time before colour television belting back ever puerile lyric that emanates from singer Fat Mike’s mouth. Circle pits and rampant moshing are commonplace, but the atmosphere is one of joyous release rather than aggression. One word of advice though; if you’re in the front row and Fat Mike offers you a drink, perhaps politely decline – it’s probably not meant for human consumption, unless you’re in to some particularly racy stuff in your private life.

Fat Mike, El Hefe, Eric Melvin and Erik Sandin are the foursome that make up NOFX, a punk rock band of American origin. Although the band enjoyed their hay day (if, indeed, they even got to celebrate such a thing) in the 80s, boasting a pretty low score of hits, they nonetheless garnered a great deal of underground attention and built quite the fan following. NOFX are far from gimmicky, if anything the band is surprisingly low key and understated for their genre. But each member is truly talented and the band represents real, rockin’ American punk. They have mastered their musical capabilities to exceptional heights over the decades and slowly cemented their tongue-in-cheek bitterness only to combine the two in what was a brilliant, nostalgic and tongue in cheek performance. The crowd went crazy for classics such as 'Bottles To The Ground', 'We Called It America' and 'Murder The Government': they belted the lyrics along in full force, to the surprise and delight of the band. Fat Mike commented his delight that someone knew the lyrics because the band had long forgot them. All in all a great night.

NOFX, the Californian punk rockers have been working as a group for thirty years now and over this time they have learned both how to play their music to an exceptional level and how to entertain the masses with their tongue in cheek performance style.

Something of a cult phenomena in the UK, the band never matched the commerciality they achieved in the States yet fans from far and wide have packed into London's Shepherd's Bush Empire to see the classic material played alongside the new stuff. Starting with a piercing '60%', the band begins with an unimaginable high amount of energy that never really seems to falter.

As the crowd claps, cheers and sings along through favourites including 'Bottles To The Ground' 'We Called It America' and 'Murder The Government'. There is a sense of bitterness in nearly all of Fat Mike's vocals and the audience enjoy mimicking this during their singalong. The band thanks the crowd sincerely and explains they are the reason they continue to visit British shores and give them a modern day taste of Americana punk.

Useless ID was amazing, they had awesome stage presence and their music was tight. Pears was explosive and super fast, I was so excited when they played some of my favorite songs (Snowflake in particular). Then NOFX took the stage, oh boy, Fat mike was pissed that Trump won the election. Given the recent political mayhem in the US, they played songs like "Murder The Government" "The IDIOT has Taken Over" and "Leaving Jesusland". Now let me say, If your not a fan of NOFX you wouldn't like this show. NOFX is famously lazy in their playing and stage presence, but that just added to the experience for me. The entire crowd was a pit when they played "Separation of Church and Skate" and I got elbowed in the side of the head a couple of times. 10/10 would go deaf again.

Appeal_To_Authority’s profile image

The concert was the day of trumps election, and the previous show mike sprained his ankle. Suffice to say Fat Mike was not having a good night, and it showed. The band was totally not into playing and you could tell they just wanted to get off stage. CLASSIC NOFX, awesome show 10/10 would get called a poser again.

Amazing as always.

Now I'm just writing something else to comply with the rule that a review must be at least 30 words long. Kind of an utterly moronic rule, since I don't really need more words to describe a performance such as this one.

It was awesome! They were entertaining, energetic and just great! Good music, great laughs! It was just so cool how they interact with the crowd! Looking forward to seeing them again!

“We’ve played over 2000 shows in 33 countries, in more than 300 cities and darn it…we’re a bit tired,” frontman Fat Mike said in a statement. “One thing I know in my heart…this is going to be the most emotional, heartbreaking, greatest tour of our career. I’ve never been so excited and at the same time terrified. Mostly excited…"

NOFX Announces Final Shows of Punk Legends’ Farewell Tour

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

When punk legends NOFX first revealed plans for their farewell tour in September 2022, frontman Fat Mike promised, “Los Angeles will be the last place we play. It’s where we started, it’s where we’ll end.” Over two years later, the band has announced that their five-decade run will come to an end in October 2024 with a three-night stand in their native California.

Before that, however, NOFX have lined up another string of dates for their farewell tour, which was previously dubbed “40 Years, 40 Cities, 40 Songs” due to each gig’s unique 40-song setlist. However, the trek expanded overseas (including Australia and Europe) and now into 2024, with the next run of dates beginning April 6 in Fort Worth, Texas.

NOFX Final Tour: 40 Years, 40 Cities, 40 Songs Per Day

The group’s Final Tour continues through fall of 2024

NOFX has added 15 more shows in eight North American cities for the band’s final tour in 2024. Among the new additions are the band’s final shows ever during a three-night stint in Los Angeles from October 4-6.

Tickets for these new tour dates go on sale Monday, November 20th at 10 am PT at PunkInDrublicFest.com . Options include single day, the Bro Bundle, VIP, and more, including a digital download of each show with ticket purchase.

The in-progress 40 cities around the world tour began on April 22, 2023, in Austin, Texas. The trek includes shows in Australia in January, Europe in May and June, and the April – October 2024 North American dates. NOFX will perform 40 songs a night, including full albums and rarities at all shows during the NOFX Final Tour. Plus, they will never repeat a setlist to ensure that each show is unique.

The punk rockers are known as one of the world’s most controversial and significant punk bands of their time. NOFX formed in Los Angeles in 1983 and went on to sell over six million records worldwide, including two records that went gold in the US and Canada. They are no strangers to pushing boundaries at their live shows, and their final tour is no different.

“We’ve played over 2000 shows in 33 countries, in more than 300 cities and darn it…we’re a bit tired,” shares Fat Mike. “One thing I know in my heart…this is going to be the most emotional, heartbreaking, greatest tour of our career. I’ve never been so excited and at the same time terrified. Mostly excited…”

NOFX has again partnered with Cameron Collins from Brew Ha Ha Productions and the Punk In Drublic Craft Beer & Music Festival to curate and produce the North American NOFX Final Tour events. Most dates feature craft beer and craft beverage tasting for festival patrons 21+ from noon until 3 pm.

Things To Do

Music + concerts, music + concerts | the offspring look back on 40 years as a band and 30 years of ‘smash’, the orange county-based punk rock band will celebrate the 30th anniversary of 'smash,' which came out on april 8, 1994, by playing it in full at honda center in anaheim on june 1..

As The Offspring played to a sea of fans who were screaming out the lyrics to the opening song, “Come Out and Play,” and its closer, “Self Esteem,” during the Lollapalooza music festivals in Argentina, Brazil and Chile in March, vocalist-guitarist Bryan “Dexter” Holland took time to let it all soak in.

“It’s mind-boggling to do shows that big,” he said during an interview, ahead of the 30th anniversary of the band’s 1994 album “Smash” on April 8 — which includes the opening and closing songs that the crowds went wild for in South America. The band will celebrate the milestone by playing the record in full at Honda Center in Anaheim on June 1.

But getting to this point, where hundreds of thousands of concertgoers buy tickets to see you perform, wear your merch and are simultaneously belting out lyrics while dancing along to the music you’ve created, was a slow-going process for the band until “Smash” came along.

A SMASHING SUCCESS

Formed in Garden Grove in 1984, the first decade of the band’s existence was a slow-building grind. Though they’d signed to Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz’s independent label, Epitaph Records, to release their second album, “Ignition,” in 1992, Holland recalls the final show to support that album tour cycle was at Goodies in Fullerton and they sold roughly 120 tickets.

“And that was pretty good for us back then,” guitarist Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman said during the same interview.

They did land dates in Europe opening for Los Angeles punk band and label mates, NOFX , on that tour, too, but back home, the guys still all had day jobs and were attending college.

Holland was in grad school studying molecular biology and Noodles was working as a custodian at a Garden Grove elementary school. Though they booked as many shows as possible in between work and school, the balancing act of real-life responsibilities and chasing a dream wasn’t so glamorous at the time.

In 1993, the guys entered Westbeach Recorders in Hollywood and demoed a bunch of tracks with Gurewitz at the helm. Holland remembers the songs “Nitro (Youth Energy),” “Bad Habit” and a rough version of “Self Esteem” being a part of those sessions. When it came time to record the actual album, they were given a $20,000 budget and headed into Track Record Studios in North Hollywood.

“That was twice as much as we got for ‘Ignition’ so we were like, ‘Wow, this is the big time,’” Holland said, also sharing that he crossed paths with Long Beach rapper Snoop Dogg in the lobby of the studio for the first time during those recording sessions. “From start to finish, it was a little less than three weeks, and at the same time, we were going to go on tour with Pennywise and I called Epitaph to say, ‘I’m sorry, I can’t finish the record because we’re doing a tour with Pennywise,’ and they said, ‘Nuh-uh, you need to finish this now because we have a release date on the books and it’s coming out in April.’ So we had to jam in and get it done before the tour, so that last week was really gnarly finishing it up.”

“Smash” came out on April 8, 1994, and with its blistering, fast-paced punk sound, ripping guitar riffs and sing-along lyrics, it landed on the Billboard 200. The songs “Come Out and Play,” “Self Esteem” and “Gotta Get Away” ended up in regular rotation on radio stations across the country and around the world. Though not a single, KROQ 106.7/FM in Los Angeles pushed the hard-hitting song “Bad Habit” — despite the flurry of curse words it was forced to bleep out — when listeners demanded to hear it. “Smash” was also the first album on Epitaph to garner gold and platinum (later multi-platinum) status in several countries.

The first time the guys heard “Come Out and Play” on the radio was just before “Smash” came out as DJ Jed the Fish played the single as his Catch of the Day.

“We knew he was going to play it, so we got on the phone and started calling and had all of our friends call and we told them all to listen,” Noodles recalled. “This was all pre-social media so you actually had to pick up the phone and call the station and it just took off. We were in Alaska when the record came out and I remember friends calling and saying ‘You’re like No. 1 on ‘The Furious 5 at 9′ on KROQ,’ which was a really big deal.”

“When you start a band, the idea of being on the radio, that’s about as exciting as it gets,” Dexter said. “It was really a moment for us. I remember I was in the lab listening to it on a tiny portable radio and I was just wanting to punch walls it was so exciting.”

It wasn’t long before they were able to quit their day jobs to make music a full-time gig and Holland put his studies on hold, though he did eventually obtain his Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Southern California in 2017 .

THREE DECADES LATER

Holland and Noodles still get excited when they hear these songs on the radio after 30 years. Seeing thousands of fans jump up and down, mosh and squeeze up against the barricade to sing along live aren’t moments lost on these guys, either.

“It’s fun to watch how the crowd reacts every night,” Noodles said, later mentioning that it’s like “the best drug in the world to get feedback like that from an audience; it’s incredible.”

To properly mark the success and the 30th anniversary of “Smash,” the band is playing the entire album, plus other hits and fan-favorites, at a hometown show at Honda Center  as part of the venue’s own on-going 30th anniversary celebration .

ALSO SEE: From Green Day’s ‘Dookie’ to Notorious B.I.G.’s ‘Ready to Die,’ these albums turn 30 in 2024

“It’s super exciting. Hometown shows always feel good because you do really feel that hometown love,” Noodles said. “But it’s a pretty big venue. I’ve seen Shakira there. I also went there to see Gwen (Stefani) when she was doing her solo thing and Marilyn Manson and Hole. I’ve seen a bunch of great bands there, so it’s an honor to play.”

The year 1994 was a big one for music in general as several of The Offspring’s punk rock peers were also breaking into the mainstream with classic albums including Green Day’s “Dookie,” NOFX’s “Punk in Drublic,” Rancid’s “Let’s Go” and Bad Religion’s “Stranger Than Fiction.”

“It felt cool because it felt like the Davids were finally getting the best of the Goliaths, for sure,” Noodles said. “But we also felt a duty and a responsibility to throw back to the bands whose shoulders we were standing on — Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols — and the Orange County bands we loved, T.S.O.L. , Adolescents, Social Distortion and the Vandals.”

THE 40th MILESTONE

While the 40th band anniversary crept up on them, Noodles and Holland said they laughed recently when a journalist in South America referred to them as “an iconic duo.”

“It’s like Batman and Robin, and if you want to know which one is Robin, it’s me,” Noodles said, pointing to himself.

The pair are the only original members in the band as others have cycled in and out through the years, but it’s the music that keeps these two together. Though they joked it was actually “a lot of therapy and foot rubs.”

“We love the same kind of music and we love making the music,” Noodles said. “We’re also just really grateful that we still get to do this. Dexter is a really hard worker. When he’s in the studio, he is so focused and he really gets into it and I’m just there cheering him on, really. I’m his hype man.”

The current lineup includes longtime bassist Todd Morse, multi-instrumentalist Jonah Nimoy and the latest addition to the band, drummer Brandon Pertzborn, who wasn’t even born when “Smash” was first released.

“Well, he was born in 1994, but not until October,” Noodles adds. “But one of the first songs that made him want to play drums was ‘Hammerhead’ and he was probably 13 at that time, but he said it was one of the songs that he really loved and he said, ‘Man, I want to play drums to that.’ So that’s an honor in and of itself.”

Noodles says the band has been enjoying its time together, warming up before each show with 5-6 songs backstage every night and dusting off some of the tracks from “Smash” that haven’t been played live much. They’ve been rocking through “Something to Believe In” and “Killboy Powerhead,” which is a cover originally by Chicago punk band The Didjits.

“What I really liked about (that song) was that it sounded like it had an Orange County riff to it, like it sounded like a D.I. riff on the guitar,” Holland said about opting to include that cover on the album. “We had a discussion, like should we cover this because they are a a peer band? But we decided to do it because it was a good song and turned out to be a great fit for the album.”

So, how do you know you’ve “made it” as a band? Is it being played on the radio? Having music videos on MTV? Hanging gold and platinum records on your walls? Or is it being parodied by “Weird Al” Yankovic ?

“Oh, ‘Weird’ Al for sure,” Noodles said without hesitation. When “Smash” was released, Yanovic reached out to see if he could parody “Come Out and Play” and make it “Laundry Day,” since there’s the repeating “you gotta keep ’em separated” line in the song.

“We were like, ‘No, we’re not Coolio; we’re like this punk band’ and we didn’t think it would work,” Noodles continued, referencing Yankovic’s parody of Coolio’s “Gangster Paradise,” which became the hit, “Amish Paradise.” But when The Offspring put out “Americana” in 1998, Yankovic reached out again, this time wanting to turn “Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)” into “Pretty Fly for a Rabbi.”

“We were like, ‘Yes, please!,” Noodles said with a laugh. “Even my daughter called me and was like ‘Weird Al’ covered your song! Dad, you’re like in a real band now!’”

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
