A fantastic trip, very well organised
Most hotel choices were amazing. A fantastic trip, very well organised.
All of the family really enjoyed our trip to the Baltic Countries and Scandinavia
All of the family really enjoyed our trip to the Baltic Countries and Scandinavia; Tours to Europe took into account all of the usual highlights we wanted to visit as well as including the special family locations. The guides were knowledgeable and very helpful; all the hotels were in excellent locations and every time we had a meeting with a driver or guide they were there on time waiting for us. We had every document or ticket provided that we needed. Overall it was a wonderful and enjoyable experience.
We were a small group of 12 who all got on extremely well
We were a small group of 12 who all got on extremely well. This added to the pleasure of our trip. Another bonus was the record-breaking warm, sunny weather in Scandinavia which was gone for our final day in Helsinki.
Loved every single thing, was impressed with all the sights

So, our goal is simple: if you travel with us, you will come home feeling like you received much more – from the experience – than you paid for it. That is value!

Today in Stockholm, you have the choice between two activites. First you may choose to join a guide on a visit to the one-of-a-kind Vasa Ship Museum. Learn about the vessel's shocking maiden voyage, when it sank in a single nautical mile. The ship, commissioned in the 1600s by King Vasa, was raised 334 years later from the bottom of the harbor. Perfectly preserved, the ship offers a rare glimpse into the amazing craftsmanship of the 17th century. Your other option is to Walk in. Dance out. at the ABBA Museum. This interactive museum is the perfect place for ABBA fans to learn about the Swedish pop sensation. The exhibition is full of ABBA memorabilia including stage outfits, instruments, awards and much more. You can even record your own performance and download it for all your friends and family to enjoy.

A Taste of Scandinavia
Nikolai was FANTASTIC!!!! He was a great tour leader. The tour took us to many places and he educated us well. However, just a few negative comments. The hotels were not satisfactory ....I am used to better hotels when I travel. Carrying my luggage throughout the tour was very burdensome. I am an older person, and although I am in great shape, I did not want to be responsible for carrying my luggage everywhere. There was an 89 year old man on our trip. He had a real hard time catching up. I usually go on escorted tours where my luggage, and everything else, is handled by the guides, not by me. I loved the places that wer went to and overall I would suggest people take Tourradar and Intrepid if they don't mind doing some of the labor involved.
- In-depth Cultural
Central Baltic
The tour guides were very good and provided commentary in English. The Estonia hotel was excellent and the boat crossing and cabin accommodations were of a good standard. The Hotel Globe in Stockholm was too far from the city. Although it was close to the rail station, I would prefer something closer to the centre of the attractions in Stockholm so that I could go back and forth from the hotel easily throughout the day. When booking the tour I would have liked to know that this tour was in Spanish, with English as a secondary language. Most of the travellers spoke Spanish and I could not interact with them.

Magic of the Fjords - 7 days

Jewels of Scandinavia End Helsinki
Tour was enjoyable. Major major let-down in failure of arrival pickup within contracted time of 90min after aircraft arrival. Told to wait when contacted before asked to pay and make my own way to hotel. Not the faults of the guides who were excellent.

7 Day - Iceland Ring Road & Snæfellsnes Peninsula Small-Group Tour

7-day Kayak & Wild Camp the Archipelago - self-guided
The trip was everything we wanted it to be, 7 days just planning your own tour. Definitely recommend the sauna at Hasko, also a good place for a cheeky ice cream mid trip. Harstena is beautiful and was a nice place to pick up some tasty snacks from the bakery. The organisation from Do The North was brilliant. All of the equipment is high quality and in good condition. We could not recommend this trip more highly if you want a little adventure. Thanks Thomas.
- Northern Lights
7 Days Self-drive | Golden Circle, South Coast, Snæfellsnes and Reykjavik
We had a super nice week, which was well thought out and organized by Tourradar. We also want to explore the north of Iceland and then come back to Tourradar for sure.
7 Days ICELAND | REYKJAVIK, GOLDEN CIRCLE & SOUTH COAST (Group Tour)
I really enjoyed this trim, for a first timer, it was perfect. If you have visited before I'd suggest a more in depth exploring of a particular feature, next time i want to climb the volcano. I was ready to come back home after all the activities, not really, but my body was! Lol. No hiccups, smooth sailing all the time, except for my baggage being delayed, lol. Awesome, awesome, awesome!

Northern lights trips.
These Northern Lights trips are dedicated to the phenomena of the Aurora Borealis . These natural displays of green, white and purple light occur most frequently in the Polar Regions in a 2500 km radius off the geomagnetic pole. The zone with the most intense sightings of Aurora Borealis extends over Lapland in northern Scandinavia, Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Finland. As it happens this is our specialist area and we are here to help you witness this bucket list item.
Seeing the Northern lights is firmly on many travellers' bucket list. As the phenomenon is unpredictable and never guaranteed, seeing the Aurora lights require careful planning and positioning, which only adds to the thrill of ticking the spectacle off the list. Looking for more information about planning your Northern Lights trip package, visit our page about when to see the Northern Lights or continue reading below the listed tours.

How can I travel to the Northern Lights region in Northern Europe?
The Northern lights tours typically take place above the Arctic Circle across the 50 Degrees North region. Flying in the Nordic region during winter is safe and convenient and winter conditions do not prevent flying or landing. As icy and snowy conditions in the far north are nothing unusual, airports are well prepared, and de-icing equipment is readily available. The industry is well regulated, planes are safe and pilots are very experienced in flying in all weather. There is no airport in Scandinavia without a convenient public transport connection to the nearest city.
Usually your first step is to get a flight to the capital city of Finland (Helsinki), Sweden (Stockholm) or Norway (Oslo) and either fly to a smaller town in Lapland - the nearest one to where you will be staying - or catch the local trains to the north. For example, you can catch an overnight train with a sleeping berth from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, arriving to the Arctic Circle in the morning. This is a very authentic way of travel, but not adviced if you're on a tight schedule.

When can you join a Northern Lights tour?
Many Northern lights tours operate from August to April, however most of the tours offered are from November until April when it is darker and colder in the region. If you have any time during these months available to travel, we would recommend later in the season when you have longer daylight hours for activities.
When should you book a Northern Lights tour?
Doing a Northern lights tour has been exceptionally popular recently with the Solar Maximum producing some of the most intense displays in over a decade. We suggest booking at least three to six months earlier to secure the best the region has to offer. Many of the hotels have built new facilities designed specifically with the Northern lights viewing in mind, such as the Glass Igloos in Kakslauttanen , Glass Igloos in Levi and the new chalets in Kirkenes.
We suggest you plan your itinerary with some Northern Lights excursions (such as snow mobiling or minivan tours) and then once you have arrived at your accommodation, you can add some more of these excursions if the conditions are right. Most tour operators will have some flexibility on a day-to-day basis as the weather conditions make a big difference to your success in seeing the Northern Lights.
Are there any day/night tours to see the Northern Lights that I can join?
There are a variety of different options to see the Northern lights within a tailor made Aurora lights tour. If you want to do a Northern lights tour in Norway, you can base yourself in one of the cities above the Arctic Circle and join evening trips that search for the Northern lights. Typically, the drivers and guides will research the weather forecast and the Aurora prediction websites each evening and will drive to the area most likely to show the aurora. A warm van, hot chocolates and sometimes an open fire, will keep you happy and cozy during the search.
Our region also offers many accommodation options designed to provide you comfortable ways to see the Northern lights. Positioned high up on a mountain in Sweden, the Abisko Aurora Sky station offers a viewing area and museum combined with a restaurant to enjoy at the same time. Abisko has a unique micro-climate which keeps the skies clear - ideal for seeing the lights!
Likewise, the patio and Jacuzzi at Lyngen Lodge, Norway or the Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Voyage deck and jacuzzi offer a great ‘bucket list’ spot to see the lights.
Similarly, perch yourself on a bar stool in the ION hotel in Iceland. This fabulous architecturally designed country hotel with huge foyer windows is a dramatic place to witness the Northern lights spectacle away from artificial light.
Are there any group tours to see the Northern Lights that I can join?
We offer several small group tours designed to see the Northern lights. In Iceland, there are several different small group coach tours that are designed around seeing the Northern Lights from Iceland's iconic spots.
This Norwegian Coastal (Kystruten) voyage and tour, Chase the Northern Lights , runs regularly during winter and is exclusive to 50 Degrees North. Fully escorted for the entire tour, this tour travels from Helsinki, to Rovaniemi and then down the Norwegian coast.
Can you predict if I will see the Northern Lights on my tour?
There are two kinds of Northern lights predictions: statistical and real-time ones. The former are based on a large amount of observations of Northern lights at different latitudes during several years. From these statistics we can say what is the probability of the occurrence of Northern lights during the course of year.
According to the statistics compiled by the Finnish Meteorological Institute, four nights out of five are illuminated by Northern lights in Northern Lapland (Kilpisjärvi-Utsjoki area) providing that the sky is free enough from clouds . On the coast of the Arctic Ocean in North Norway (e.g. in Tromsö) one can see Northern lights almost every night. Even in South Finland, for example in Helsinki, one can see them but much more seldom; in Helsinki only one night out of 20.
Remember, the occurrence of auroras depends on the latitude, so be sure to look Northwards for the lights. We always suggest staying in the Aurora Zone long enough for storms (i.e clouds) to pass. And just in case you haven't realised, during summer months you cannot see any aurora due to light nights (up to 24 hrs of light, i.e. the Midnight Sun). Generally, the best time to see auroras is between 9pm and 1am local time.
NOTE: The auroras come in lots of different shades and strengths. Some nights, you will be dazzled by brilliant lights whilst other nights, it is a dull hazy green, hard to see and rather vague. Fingers crossed for one of the magical nights!!
When the Earth's magnetic field is very disturbed, the auroras can spread all over Europe for a couple of hours.
To get more technical, the latter predictions are based on a space-weather monitoring system either by ground-based devices or satellites watching the space-weather conditions around the Earth. When the monitoring devices (e.g., magnetometers or particle detectors in a satellite) show certain deviations from the normal situation, one can expect that a space weather storm is approaching in a few hours.
The skill of real-time predictions is, unfortunately, rather low as we cannot make predictions for several days like forecasting normal weather. The reason for this shortcoming is that we do not fully understand the complicated processes, starting from the Sun and ending in the near-space of the Earth, involved in the cosmic ignition of the Northern lights. Therefore, more space-research is needed for better forecasts. For further information about the Northern Lights, refer to this Spaceweather website.

Viewing those bluish-greenish lights dance on the dark sky creates lifetime memories. You can get lucky and enjoy it by just being in the right place at the right time. You can also hunt for them and go seek them out. The easiest way to do that is to join one of the many northern lights tours.
To see the Aurora Borealis, as the Northern Lights, is also called, is a bucket list experience for many. I still remember the few times I’ve enjoyed the Northern Lights. Growing up in southern Sweden, I had the privilege to go skiing up north, and with that, a few times, the Aurora Borealis showed up. I remember just gazing up in the sky and thinking, wow that’s beautiful. It’s been around 20 years ago since I first experienced the Northern Lights, but it has stuck with me.
Another memorable occasion is when I was visiting Reykjavik, Iceland. My now-husband and I walked up to the Hillgrimskirkje, it was evening, and the sky was dark, and there it was Aurora Borealis with its beautiful lights. The setting was perfect. We later had Mexican food, let’s just say, stick with the local food . The fish soup, for example, in Reykjavik harbor, is the best one I’ve ever had. It was delicious.
Where to Go to See the Aurora Borealis
For you to have the best chance of seeing the lights, going to the right place, at the right time, is crucial. Let’s start with where to go for the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights. Not limited to, but places around the Arctic circle are usually the best places to enjoy the lights.
The lights often show up in;
• Finland • Sweden • Norway • Iceland • Greenland • Canada • Alaska
Looking at the Nordic countries, some of the popular places to go looking for the Aurora Borealis are;
• Finland – Rovaniemi, Kemi • Sweden – Kiruna, Riksgransen • Norway – Tromso, Kirkenes • Iceland – Reykjavik, Akureyri
When to See the Northern Lights
Now, you know a few great places to go search for the lights, but when should you go? In general, for Finland, Norway , Sweden, and Iceland it’s a good time to go from mid-September to early April . With the right conditions, this is the time you will have the best chance to view the Aurora Borealis.
Realistic Expectations
Since the conditions have to be perfect for the Northern Lights, make sure you include a lot of other fun activities as well on your trip. Your main goal might be to see the Northern Lights but plan a vacation that would be amazing even if you don’t see them. It’s a natural phenomenon, and although the guides are great, and know how to predict them and where to look, at the end of the day, it’s up to mother nature.
A trip to the Nordic countries can include so many unique experiences, a husky ride, reindeer safari, snowmobiling, ice fishing, snowshoeing, and more the list goes on. When you plan your vacation, include a good variety of hunting for the northern lights with fun day activates as well.
Iceland Northern Lights Tours
Traveling to Iceland, discovering nature along with the Northern Lights, you are in for a treat. Ice caves, glacier lagoons, black sandy beaches, hot springs, waterfalls – Iceland is unique. It creates a story-like setting hunting for the northern lights in some of these environments.

You can also choose based on specific interests, like a Super Jeep tour, a boat tour, a snowmobile tour, or a husky ride tour. The tours last from a couple of hours up to full-day excursions. Here are a few Northern Lights tours from Reykjavik, depending on what type of experience you are looking for.
Northern Light Tours from Reykjavik – Small Group Tours
With the small group tours, you can expect a maximum of 6 – 15 people depending on the excursion. The small groups make for a more personalized experience, and you will have plenty of opportunities to talk to the guide and ask questions.
Northern Light Tours from Reykjavik – Full Day Tour s
If you are up for a full-day tour, exploring some of the Reykjavik surroundings in combination with hunting for the northern lights when the dark arrives, there are plenty of options. You can discover the south part of Iceland with the black sandy beaches, waterfalls, and more. Maybe you want to do the classic Golden Circle tour. Or glacier hiking might be your thing during the day. In the evening, you look out for the lights. Here are some options.
Northern Light Tours from Reykjavik – Cruise and Boat Tours
Getting out on the water away from civilization is a great way to hunt for the lights. The quietness, the breeze, and hopefully the dancing light on the dark sky. Here are some boat and cruise options from Reykjavik.

Maybe you want to go search for the light in a Tesla. A more traditional experience would be to listen to old folklores, learn more about the reindeer culture, and enjoy a traditional camp dinner. Another fun alternative is to enjoy a husky ride under the dark night.
Tromso Northern Lights Cruises
How about taking an evening cruise, sailing the waters, and at the same time enjoy the cold breeze and hopefully the beautiful lights. Get on a catamaran, on a boat with a jacuzzi, or as a dinner cruise, in Tromso. Which one would you prefer?
Northern lights tours – Multiple Days with Nordic Experiences
When the evening comes, go for a Northern Lights hunt snowshoeing. Enjoy the silence, and hopefully the dancing lights on the dark sky. Spend the night in an ice dome. When you wake up, enjoy a husky ride. This adventure is as close to nature as you can get.
Unless you want to be even more adventures and go for a longer husky ride and set camp in the wild. On this two-day adventure, you do not only search for the lights but also Norwegian wildlife. Is this the ultimate wildlife experience from Tromso ?
Finland Northern Lights Tours
Rovaniemi adventures northern lights tours.
Rovaniemi, Finland, offers many unique tours, combining the Northern Light hunt with adventures. How about a snowmobile tour, or 4-wheeler tour? Or maybe you want to enjoy the lights from the air? Here are a few of that stick out;

With big windows facing the woods, enjoying the evening from your room at the Arctic TreeHouse hotel is a treat. Relax, take in the surroundings and enjoy!
Sweden Northern Lights Tours
Many of the Swedish locations look at the whole experience, including unique accommodation along with fun winter activities. How about staying at the Jukkasjarvi Ice Hotel or the Treehotel in Harads , where the Aurora Borealis becomes part of the experience.
You can book northern lights activities directly with the hotels.
Here are a couple more multi-day tours in the Swedish Lapland;
Two final suggestions.
Realistic expectations – We have talked about some interesting, unique tours in this article. It is worth mentioning again when it comes to natural phenomena like the Aurora Borealis, mother nature decides. Combining the light hunt with other adventures allows you to have a great time, even though they might not show.
It will be cold – The geographic area close to the Arctic circle can get cold in the winter. Make sure you dress appropriately to stay warm and cozy, for the best experience. Layer up your clothes, stay dry and wear comfortable, warm shoes.
Exploring the Northern lights is a dream for many I hope that these Northern Lights Tours in Iceland, Norway, Finland, and accommodation in Sweden will help you make that dream a reality.

Wow, I had no idea that there were that many northern lights-related tours and cruises offered. I think it would be very cool to see them while staying in one of the ice hotels, but I can’t even imagine what staying in one of those would be like.
There are lot of variations, for sure, when it comes to Northern light tours. Based on your interest, you have many options. How does relaxing in a hot tub or enjoying a husky ride while watching the Aurora Borealis sound? The ice hotels are beautiful, and for sure an experience. Many just do one night in the ice building and then stay in the hotel part for the rest of the duration. It’s a cozy experience for sure, you should try it :). The domes are pretty cool to stay at as well, allowing you to enjoy the dark night (with hopefully the Northern Lights showing up) from your bed.

We were very pleased with the service provided by our travel consultant, Sofia. She was very prompt in replying to all our queries. We enjoyed the itinerary where different experiences were offered - various train rides and cruises. The hotels were good, all centrally located and spacious with very good breakfasts provided. Everything is planned for with detailed information, maps and vouchers. All we needed to do was present ourselves at the various venues. We felt assured that there is someone who knows our plans and who we could call upon should we require any assistance. I would definitely recommend Nordic Visitor to anyone who wants to go Scandinavia on a free-and-easy yet have all the hassle of planning taken care of.

You may have a few questions about your upcoming trip to Scandinavia, so we’ve collected and answered the most important ones for your convenience. Or, if you want to know more about our processes and payment details, check out our FAQ page .
1. What countries make up Scandinavia?
Scandinavia is a region in Northern Europe that is made up of Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The neighbouring countries of Finland and Iceland are technically 'Nordic' rather than 'Scandinavian'. But many people consider them Scandinavian because they share many cultural similarities.
2. Are Finland and Iceland in Scandinavia?
Scandinavia is typically defined as the countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Finland and Iceland are technically ‘Nordic’ countries as they are not part of the Scandinavian peninsula.
However, due to shared celebrations and cultural norms, both Iceland and Finland can loosely be considered Scandinavian in many ways.
3. Why travel to Scandinavia?
Imagine looking out to incredible views of endless fjords, visiting chic ‘Scandi-cool’ cities and enjoying the midnight sun by the many charming canals and harbours. Scandinavia is a brilliant destination for its balance between urban areas and nature reserves, and you benefit from the best of both with the opportunity to go on pretty hiking trails and sightseeing in the city.
It’s a feast for the senses as well, with colourful UNESCO heritage wharfs, cruises along the Baltic sea and literal smörgåsbords of delicious food. A long-time favourite of nature lovers, hikers, city breakers and fans of architecture, Scandinavia has activities and points of interest for everyone.
What's more, the region has been named by top publications as one of the best destinations to visit in Northern Europe this year .
If we’ve whet your appetite and you’re curious about the attractions here, then read our first-time visitor guide to Scandinavia .
4. Where to visit in Scandinavia?
Scandinavia has so many must-see cities and points of interest that it’s hard to list them all. Here are our favourite cultural hotspots and famous sights:

- Copenhagen, Denmark
- Pulpit Rock or Preikestolen, Norway
- Bergen, Norway
- Gothenburg, Sweden
- Helsinki, Finland
- Oslo, Norway

5. When is the best time to visit?
Scandinavia is stunning all year round and there’s plenty to see and do during each season. Pinpointing the best time for you depends on your preferences when travelling. For pleasant weather and extended hours of daylight, visit Scandinavia during the summer months.
Visit in the winter or shoulder seasons for a quieter trip with charming, festive sights. If the northern lights are your must-see, then we’d recommend checking out our Norway and Lapland packages.
For more information and travel ideas read our comprehensive guide on when to visit Scandinavia .
6. How to get around Scandinavia?
A popular option to travel around Scandinavia is via railway. Highly rated by locals, the trains are usually clean, comfortable and most importantly, prompt. The railway routes pass by stunning scenery making for an extraordinary “commute” and there are opportunities to stretch your legs on board.
Sailing from destination to destination on a cruise is also a great way to see Scandinavia, as each voyage will give you amazing views of coastal attractions such as the Norwegian fjords. For our cruise and train packages , we arrange all of the timings for you and tickets are booked before you arrive for peace of mind.
Another great way to travel around Scandinavia is by guided mini-bus tour. Unlike larger coach tours, our small group tours have a maximum of 16 people. You get to travel with a local guide who will show you their perspective of Scandinavia, and not just repeat what’s written in the guidebooks.
Scandinavia also has some of the best self-drive road trip routes in the world. You could see the countless islands of the Stockholm archipelago here, as well as seaviews from Hardangerfjord Bridge or vistas from the highest mountain passage in Norway, Sognefjell.
For more ideas on how to explore Scandinavia, check out our range of travel packages .

If you’ve already booked but need to change your dates, get in touch with your travel consultant to rearrange your bookings.
8. When should I book my flights?
We recommend that you book your package and wait for confirmation before you organise your flights as this ensures that your tour is secured and you have all of the correct timing information.
We advise checking flight times and dates beforehand so you can pinpoint your ideal tour dates. Get in touch with your dedicated travel consultant to move your tour dates if your flights change.
9. Can we add extra nights in some locations?
You can add extra nights at the start and end of all tours. For some tours, you can ask your consultant to add extra nights at destinations along the way as well. While we may not always build a tour from scratch, we will try our best to include any special sights or attractions you want to go to.
11. What should I pack to wear in Scandinavia?

- Comfortable walking shoes
- Small day bag or rucksack
