Adelaide cruise port

Region Australia - New Zealand - Pacific Ocean Islands

Local Time 2024-04-28 17:32

Port Adelaide cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Adelaide, South Australia. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia. It is located on Torrens River, between Mt Lofty Ranges (to the east) and Gulf St Vincent (to the west). By metro population (over 1,3 million), the city is ranked Australia's 5th largest - after Sydney (New South Wales) , Melbourne (Victoria) , Brisbane (Queensland) and Perth (Western Australia) .

Adelaide is named after Queen Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen (1792-1849), consort of William lV (1765-1837, King of Hanover). City's layout was planned in 1836 as a square-mile grid of wide boulevards surrounded by gardens and nature parks. Once known as "City of Churches", Adelaide has become celebrated for its arts festival, alfresco lifestyle, manageable size and pace, enhanced by a climate in which hot summers and warm autumns are separated by mild winters and springs.

There is a free city-loop bus service running along North Terrace and going to the south through Victoria Square. Shopping can be found close to North Terrace, at Rundle Mall off King William Str. Have in mind that shops and most attractions close at 5 pm. Beyond North Terrace is Torrens River with boat tours and tree-lined promenades, ovelooked by Festival Centre, Convention Centre and Adelaide Oval across the river.

Port Adelaide

Port Adelaide is located on Port River (officially Port Adelaide River) which is part of an estuary north of downtown. Since 1837, Port River is used as a shipping channel that serves cargo and passenger ships. Harbour Terminal (serving passenger / ferry and cruise ships) is at Outer Harbour (on Gulf St Vincent).

Port Adelaide is approx 14 km (9 mi) northwest of downtown and is also a city suburb (Outer Harbor, industrial suburb). Port's first wharf (Maclaren Wharf) was built in 1840. It had length 102 m (336 ft) and low tide draft/water depth 4,6 m (15 ft). Initially, the port had capacity to handle vessels with max displacement 539 tons. By mid-19th-century, the increasing shipping trade resulted in building new wharves and expanding the harbour facilities.

Outer Harbor's construction started in early-20th-century in order to accommodate larger vessels and reduce the time for navigation up Port River to Inner Harbour. In 2002, Newport Quays (consortium) was contracted by state's Government for the AUD 1,5 billion port development project covering 51 hectares (130 acres) of land. Land sales began in 2005. This project included the building of 2000 residential homes, with construction works creating ~4000 local jobs. In 2008, the now budgeted AUD 2 billion project was nearing completion (2 of 3 phases completed). Phase 3 included building a boat/yacht marina (capacity 100 slots/berths) and a building over the water.

In 2016 was proposed a project for Inner Harbor's Dock One transformation into a premium 23-hectares (0,23 km2) waterfront complex with residential and commercial buildings. The project included 1250 homes to be built across 4 precincts - 750 by Starfish Developments (at precincts Dock One, and Port Approach) and 500 by Cedar Woods (in precincts North West and Fletcher's Slip). The project included also constructing an esplanade (waterfront promenade) around Inner Harbor, a dockside piazza and refurbishment of Marine and Harbors (old building) into apartments. The 7-year project (estimated to generate ~AUD 280 million in investments) was officially launched on February 10, 2019. Inner Harbor is approx 13 km / 8 mi from downtown's CBD (central business district).

Port's cruising season runs from late-October through early-April. Trends show that the Australian cruising market is growing at a rapid pace. It has some of the industry's highest penetration rates nationally. Currently, Australian cruise ports' strongest competition comes from Singapore and Hong Kong (China) .

(statistics) Between season 2004-2005 and season 2009-2010, there were an over 450% increase in cruise ship visits and over 685% increase in cruise passengers. During season 2011-2012, MS Athena (renamed CMV Astoria , back then owned by Classic International Cruises / 1985-2012 defunct) was the first-ever cruise ship with long-term homeporting in Adelaide (regularly-scheduled roundtrips).

(statistics) season 2015-2016 (Nov 2015 - May 2016) had scheduled 38 cruise ship calls. Of those, 23 to Adelaide, 10 to Kangaroo Island , 4 to Port Lincoln and 1 to Robe (Limestone Coast).

On February 4-5, 2012 (over the weekend) at the port docked 4 cruise liners with total ~10000 passengers and crew. At that time, the largest cruiser that ever visited Australia ( Cunard 's RMS Queen Mary 2 ) berthed in the morning (Feb 4) carrying 2620 pax plus 1200 crew. On the next day (Feb 5), at "Outer Harbour 2" docked Celebrity Century (2150 pax, now Marella Explorer 2 ), Crystal Serenity (1100 pax) and MS Athena (550 pax, now Astoria ). Due to all ship calls, business hours in Rundle Mall were extended and live band music entertainment was provided. Weekend's 4 ship visits injected AUD 1,35+ million into the state's economy, with AUD 360,000+ to the city and its surrounding regions. Rundle Mall was visited by 60,000+ people (35,000-45,000 on regular weekend days).

During season 2015-2016, inaugural calls at Port Adelaide were made by Explorer of the Seas ( RCI-Royal Caribbean ), Pacific Eden ( P&O Australia ), Superstar Virgo ( Genting Star Cruises ) and Queen Elizabeth (Cunard).

Princess Cruises ' 2015-2016 program for the first time ever included a roundtrip departure from Adelaide. The 9-night itinerary visited Melbourne, Burnie (Tasmania) , Kangaroo Island, Port Lincoln and Portland (Victoria) , with prices starting from AUD 1200 pp (quad cabin rates). The company's 2015-2016 program had scheduled 80+ departures out of Australian ports (Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide) and also from Auckland NZ .

On December 11, 2016, the port was visited by its ever-largest cruise ship - RCI's Ovation of the Seas . The vessel docked at Port Adelaide Passenger Terminal (at 7 am) bringing nearly 6000 passengers and crew. At 4 pm, it departed for Hobart Tasmania . Australia's cruise industry worth for 2016 was estimated at ~USD 5,95 billion.

Princess Cruises' 2018 program (based on Golden Princess ) offered roundtrips to New Zealand. The first departure was January 8, 2018 (ports of call Melbourne, Dunedin, Akaroa, Wellington, Gisborne, Tauranga, Auckland, Fiordland Park). During season 2017-2018 (October-March), the cruise port handled 65 ship calls (16 more than 2016-2017) and a total of 159,513 passengers. For season 2019-2020, the port had scheduled 86 ship calls (nearly 1/4 increase).

On February 12, 2018, P&O Australia started the company's longest homeporting season in Adelaide. The 8-night cruise (themed "A Taste Of Tasmania") was operated by Pacific Eden .

The voyage had twice the number of nights of the traditional 3-day Cruises to Nowhere and featured scenic passage through Wineglass Bay (Freycinet National Park) and Great Oyster Bay (Tasman Sea). The available for booking shore excursions were 56, including sampling oysters at Coffin Bay and exploring South Australia's first lighthouse at Cape Willoughby Conservation Park.

During season 2018, P&O had scheduled 5 turnarounds/roundtrips from Adelaide with ~7000 passengers, injecting USD 5 million into the local economy. The 1500-passenger Pacific Eden (now Vasco da Gama ) started its first voyage from Adelaide (3-night "Comedy" cruise to nowhere) on February 9. The last roundtrip was on Feb 24 ( Food and Wine-themed ).

In March 2019, the Dutch company Royal Boskalis Westminster NV won the contract for widening Outer Harbor's shipping channel. The EUR 40 million project was awarded by Flinders Ports (port owner/operator) and includes Boskalis to widen the channel from 130 to 170 m (427-558 ft) and also to extend port's swinging/turning basin to allow access to larger container ships (Post Panamax-sized boxships) and larger cruise liners . Works include removing over 1,5 million m3 of material (sand and clay) via one trailing suction hopper dredger (ship) and one backhoe dredger (barge-mounted excavator). The dredged material will be moved to a designated area approx 30 km (19 mi) offshore. The project's completion was scheduled for 2019-H2.

For 2020-2021 (October through May), Princess scheduled the company's ever-largest South Australian homeporting season, with five Adelaide-visiting liners and estimated ~USD 20 million revenue to state's economy - from port charges, ship supplies, passenger-crew spending ashore. Of the 5 Australia-based Princess ships, 2 were homeported in Adelaide ( Sea and Sapphire ).

  • Short-break ("Mini Cruises") visit Port Lincoln (4-day eastbound) and Melbourne (4-day westbound).

Adelaide to Fremantle-Perth cruises are 6-day (easbound relocation) coastal itineraries also visiting Kangaroo Island and Esperance .

Houston woman faces 3rd DWI arrest after police allegedly found her passed out in car with infant

Luke Jones Image

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A Houston mother is facing several charges after police say they found her passed out drunk in a running vehicle with her eight-month-old child.

Police say they found Denisha Young, 33, slumped over behind the wheel of a vehicle stopped in a moving lane of traffic on North Shepherd near Tidwell Wednesday evening.

Officers said the vehicle was running and the gear was in drive. Young's foot was reportedly on the brake.

They say her eight-month-old child was in an unsecured car seat in the back.

"That's just horrible parenting," parenting expert Dr. Glenn Wilkerson with The ARKGroup, said.

When police revived Young, they say she tried shutting the car door on them and driving off.

They soon discovered she had an open warrant for robbery.

Young was arrested and charged with child endangerment and DWI. It's her third DWI arrest.

"You put that and poor parenting together and she ought not to have the children in my opinion," Wilkerson said.

In court, Young's attorney told a hearing officer that Young is a mother of four while trying to argue for a lower bond.

Hearing officer Renette Franklin gave Young personal recognizance bonds for the child endangerment and DWI charges, meaning she wouldn't have to pay anything to get out of jail.

"None of these are technically considered to be violent offenses," Franklin said.

A judge later raised both bonds and Young remains in the Harris County Jail.

West Adelaide footballer Sam May in hospital after incident at Port Lincoln hotel

A man wearing football clothes

West Adelaide footballer Sam May, 24, remains at the Royal Adelaide Hospital after an incident at Port Lincoln at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to the Pier Hotel on Sunday morning after reports a man had fallen through the roof.

SA Police said the man was taken to hospital a short time later.

A spokesperson for SA   Health said the man remained in a serious condition.

Drone footage of the hotel shows a hole in the roof of the building, but the Pier Hotel declined to provide comment.

In a statement, May's family said they were "truly grateful for the incredible care our beautiful boy received in Port Lincoln".

A hole in a roof

"He has been blessed to be surrounded by such caring, clever people," the statement read.

"We are forever grateful that his loyal Westies family and the beautiful Heard family were by his side.

"Sammy is the light of our lives and we absolutely love and adore him as does everyone who is lucky enough to meet him.

"As awful and as difficult it is, we just need to wait now...

"We all know he has the heart of a lion and an amazingly brave spirit and he will be doing everything he can to get back to his best."

The West Adelaide Football Club was in Port Lincoln for the Round 3 SANFL game against Norwood on Saturday afternoon.

Club, SANFL providing support to family

In a statement, the club said it would continue to support the family.

"The West Adelaide Football Club can confirm that Senior Men's player Sam May was involved in an incident in the early hours of Sunday morning in Port Lincoln," West Adelaide Football Club CEO Conny Wilson said.

"Our priority is the health and well-being of Sam and his family as well as the wider West Adelaide community.

"The club requests that the family and everyone involved is given space and privacy as we work through this difficult situation."

The SANFL said it was aware of an "off field" incident at the weekend.

"Our thoughts are with Sam, his family and friends at such a difficult time, as well as the players and officials at the West Adelaide Football Club," the statement read.

"We are providing ongoing assistance to the club as they support Sam's family, their players, staff and volunteers.

"Out of respect for Sam and his family, we will not be providing any further comment at this point in time."

Adelaide Australia Port Guide

You might already know of Australia’s bigger destinations like Sydney and Melbourne, but you shouldn’t discount hidden gems like Adelaide when you take a cruise to Australia . After all, Adelaide has it all: incredible nature, sprawling wine country, and attractions to delight the whole family.

Downtown Adelaide is compact and easily walkable. The restaurant scene has exploded in recent years, and the city has developed a reputation as a foodie haven. If you want to venture outside of the city while on one of our Adelaide cruises, head to glamorous South Australian wine country for tastings and a glimpse into where over half of the country’s wine comes from. Take the afternoon to go church-hopping, or hike to the summit of the appropriately named Mount Lofty. Adelaide balances urban sophistication with a laid-back Australian attitude, which makes for an ideal day trip for the curious traveler.

Stroll the Adelaide Botanic Garden for a day among Australia’s most beautiful flora. You can lose track of an afternoon as you explore 126 acres of beautiful green space. It’s a beloved attraction in Adelaide, and entry is completely free. During Adelaide cruises, this budget-friendly activity is a must-do for nature lovers.

Adelaide Zoo

Over 2,500 animals live at the massive Adelaide Zoo, like pandas, lions, seals, and all sorts of exotic species in between. The zoo is a perfect activity for all ages. Kids can burn off extra energy at the playground, while adults can enjoy animal encounters and guided tours with kangaroos, lemurs, and koalas, to name a few.

South Australian Museum

Near the University of Adelaide is the fascinating South Australian Museum, which pays extensive homage to Australian Aborigines and their cultural artifacts and traditions. No visit to Adelaide is complete without this trip back in time.

Morialta Conservation Park

If you’re craving time in rugged nature, take a trip just 30 minutes beyond Adelaide’s city center to Morialta Conservation Park, home to three cascading waterfalls, challenging hiking trails, and plenty of places to rock climb or mountain bike. Hikes range from 30 minutes to 3 hours, so there’s something to do for all skill levels and time constraints.

Sip at the National Wine Centre

Sommeliers and wine lovers will fall in love with the National Wine Centre in Adelaide, which is close to the Adelaide Botanic Garden. Enjoy the winemaking exhibits which educate visitors on the critically important wine industry in Southern Australia. The centre also offers tastings and courses to teach you the ins and outs of Australian wine.

Go Historic Church Hopping

You can’t visit the so-called City of Churches and not check out Adelaide’s most beautiful places of worship. Take a self-guided tour of St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral, admire the dramatic spires of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, and take a moment of silence at Australia’s oldest mosque, the Adelaide Mosque.

Peel Street

Address: 9 Peel St, Adelaide South Australia 5000

Bakery on O’Connell

Address: 128 O'Connell St, Adelaide, South Australia 5006

This 24-hour bakery offers confections and freshly baked treats around the clock. Here, you’ll find everything from vegan goodies to wholesale items. Butter croissants beg to be eaten for breakfast, or go for huge donuts, cakes, savory quiche, and more.

Culture & History of the Adelaide Cruise Port

The area we now know as Adelaide was originally occupied by the native Kaurna population, and parts of the city were constructed to honor their culture and traditions. Adelaide was carefully built and painstakingly laid out because it was one of the first Australian cities that wasn’t built to accommodate convicts. Europeans arrived in Adelaide by the mid-19th century, and Adelaide was established as a British colony in 1836. Adelaide became the capital of South Australia, and today it’s home to a population of over 1.3 million people. Adelaide also consistently ranks in livability and makes “best places to live” lists each year.

Adelaide Port Facilities & Location

On one of our Adelaide cruises, your ship will dock at the Outer Harbor of Port Adelaide. The city center is a 25-mile, 30-minute taxi ride from the Adelaide cruise terminal. If you want to stay close to the cruise terminal, you can make a museum day out of it. The South Australia Maritime Museum and the National Railway Museum are located near the cruise port. There also will typically be a shuttle ready to take Adelaide cruise passengers to the center of town.

Transportation in Adelaide

Adelaide has an extensive bus and train system for navigating the city, plus car rentals are popular for tourists spending the day here. There’s a free bus that loops around the main sights in the city center. You can negotiate with your taxi driver to take you around to several city attractions while stopped on your Adelaide cruise. Hiring a car is a good plan if you’re interested in venturing out to wine country. Of course, once you get into the city center, it’s fairly navigable and flat if you prefer walking.

Shopping Near the Adelaide Cruise Port

Adelaide’s shopping scene knows how to appreciate both the simple pleasures and the finer things in life. Chocolatiers and cafes line the streets, including Haigh's Chocolates, where it’s recommended you make a reservation to see the chocolate-making facilities. You can’t leave Adelaide without trying South Australian wine, which is one of the region’s biggest exports. Fine jewelry is another given in Adelaide, where opals are the national gemstone.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

You’ll use the Australian dollar during your Adelaide cruise, and you’ll find it good to carry a little bit of cash when you go places to cover small expenses. Credit cards are commonly accepted in this part of South Australia, and you’ll find ATMs all over the city. Tipping isn’t customary in Australia, but rounding up to the nearest dollar with taxi drivers is extremely polite. Tipping in restaurants isn’t expected.

  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

weekend cruise adelaide

A weekend in Moscow: blintz with uncle Lenin, raw reindeer and caviar

  • Asia / Europe / Russia / Travel

weekend cruise adelaide

For the last few days Russia has been on the lips of everybody. Football fans, victory over the Czech Republic, hooligans and a deciding game. We’re playing soon. In the meantime let’s have a look at the country of former (thankfully!) Big Brother…

The Red Square, marvellous orthodox churches, blintz, caviar, colourful matryoshka dolls, beef stroganoff and vodka… lots of vodka. These are some of the positive things that come to mind when we think about our former neighbour. There also negative ones but enough has been said about those lately.

Putting the stereotypes aside, we decided to see real Moscow AD 2012.

widok na Kreml

The Kremlin

The preparations for this trip took some time and money. Apart from tickets and a guide you need a visa to get into Moscow. And visas turned out to be more expensive than tickets! So if you’re happy you bought cheap tickets to Moscow think again and consider a few more hundreds for the visa. We also had to ask the consulate for entrance permission for a child with a passport that is valid for less than 180 days. Luckily Maximilian I The Terrible was accepted so we left for Russia.

Moscow welcomed us with passport and visa control that took soooo long, and a huge traffic jam afterwards (the trip from the airport took 1.5 hours!!). Then is started to get better. The hotel was pretty, elegant and located close to main attractions such as The Kremlin, Red Square with Lenin’s Mausoleum and the marvellous Cathedral of St. Vasily the Blessed.

baśniowy sobór

The magic cathedral

The cathedral is absolutely beautiful and marvellous. There might be a bit of truth in the legend saying that Ivan IV The Terrible blinded the builders of the cathedral so they can never build such a beautiful thing again…

The Red Square, on the other hand, wasn’t that great. Maybe that’s because there was some kind of sport festival held with makeshift structures standing in the middle. As a result the square didn’t look as impressive as I imagined.

After walking around stands with ridiculously expensive matryoshka dolls we decided to check if our culinary expectations can be satisfied.

What do you know about Russian cuisine? I know that they have blintz, caviar, pelmeni, beef stroganoff and vodka. We decided to learn more and started with a visit to   Cafe Puszkin on  Tverskoy bulvar 26A.

The place was crowded and designed to have an early 20th century look. The food was delicious. The only drawback was the cigarette smoke which we are not used to anymore…

Fortunately a wild boar carpaccio, which was formed in to a bouquet on the plate and delicate pelmeni with salmon made us forget all the disadvantages.

smakołyki w Puszkinie

Pushkin delicacies — wild boar carpaccio

delikatne pielmieni z łososiem

Pelmeni with salmon

Satisfied but still in exploratory mode, on the next day we found ourselves in one of the weirdest places we have ever been to. The restaurant located on Piewczeskij pierieułok 6 in Kitaj-Gorod district was called Ekspedicija.

You could see the weirdness right after crossing the threshold. Ground floor welcomed us with information about trips to Siberia and rallies organized by the owners. What was waiting for us upstairs? Tundra maybe?

Syberia w wydaniu Eskpedicji

Siberia in Ekspedicija restaurant

Pine trees, polar bear and an orange helicopter. Seemed like a perfect place to try Siberian cuisine from the far North.

We ordered a mix of starters. Theoretically for two. In reality — at least for four. The price however, seemed right for meal for ten! But you need to let go of the money if you want to try a reindeer, caviar and frozen fish from the North? 🙂

stroganina, suszona ryba, paprotnik i surowy renifer, czyli nietypowe przekąski

Unusual starters: stroganina, dried fish, pteridophytes and a raw reindeer

We got caviar, reindeer ham and tongues, frozen fish and scallops, dried meat and fish. A little something for everybody.

The thing that appealed to me the most was much more traditional. A cake…! It was a little bit similar to apple pie but with red wild berries inside and a vanilla dressing on a side. Served in a winter manner it tasted surprisingly familiar… How is it possible that our desserts resemble those from distant and freezing Siberia? What does it mean? 😉

łakocie pod choinką

delicacies under the tree

If you’re not into such unusual treats (to be honest a frozen reindeer wasn’t the best thing I tried)… visit Georgian restaurant   Genacwale on Arbat street and try simple and delicious chaczapuri or Russian blintz in Godunov restaurant located in 17 th century monastery cellars on Teatral’nyy 5.

However, if you don’t like crowds and overpaying, Godunov may not be the best place for you. It’s crowded and the prices are tourist-unfriendly. The blintz, on the other hand, are excellent. 🙂

bliny i wędzona ryba...mniam!

Blintz with a smoked fish…yummy!

Hungry or not, when in Moscow you need to see uncle Lenin. His mausoleum is opened only until 1 pm, and getting in is quite a challenge — it includes a walk around The Red Square (if you ask me why I will respond in a Russian manner: because that’s the way it is!), deposition of your camera and mobile phone, a long wait in two queues (to the deposit and to the mausoleum), etc. Then you take a quick stroll around and that’s all.

Lenin is lying down and looks quite alright for a person who died in 1924. Wikipedia informs us that lots of procedures are performed to keep the body in this condition: “The mummy undergoes safety procedures twice a week and a full conservation every 18 months”.

Some of the Russians believe that comrade Lenin is still alive. We met some of them…

wierność przekonaniom

faithful to their believes

After meeting Lenin, just before our departure on Sunday, we went to see the monuments surrounding the Kremlin. Little orthodox churches look magical and compensate the absurd Russian reality. There is no information anywhere, after standing in a queue for a while you realize that you need to step out and find a cash desk that is absurdly far from the attraction it sells tickets for. Also, coming back using the same route might be impossible – as it might already be closed…

piękno Kremla

Beauty of the Kremlin

ostatnie spojrzenie na Moskwę

the last look at Moscow

The beauty of Kremlin and the orthodox churches did not wipe out negative experiences caused by Russian fake freedom. But maybe that’s a good thing after all…? Sometimes it’s good to appreciate our own reality 🙂

Celebrity's Journey to Moscow excursion

Cool Cruiser

I will be in St. Petersburg in June on a Celebrity ship. Having been there previously, we would like to do the Journey to Moscow excursion. Celebrity lists it in the shore excursion brochure for my sail date, but it has not been available for booking on their website.

I have called Celebrity twice and both times was told that even though it is listed in the shore excursion brochure, it probably isn't being offered since it is not listed for pre-booking on the website. I have emailed Celebrity twice and received a different response. They responded that they were still working with the tour provider on the details and is not yet available for pre-booking.

Anyone have any experience with this that could offer some advice? It's frustrating that cruise line agents can be so misinformed and inconsistent in what they tell us.

Having done this one-day trip to Moscow and back on another cruise while in St. Petersburg, I might be able to share some insight. First, from dealing with some Celebrity folks about Europe options, certain of them are limited in their personal experiences and knowledge about this part of the world. Shouldn't be this way, but it is. They know more on the familiar Carib options as that is what is both closer and for which they get more of their calls/question. If they haven't done it, nor is is clear on their computer screen, they can't be of much help.

Second, that excursion to Moscow has been "evolving" during the past few years as they have switched from doing it by air flights to connection by high-speed rail. On trips like this one that is more costly and highly specialized, you will probably need to "press and push" to reach someone who is more likely to know this somewhat of a "needle in the haystack".

It's sad that you've gotten the "run-around", but sometimes the staff is not as informed and experienced as you would like, expect and need.

Do you need any background info for what you would see and do in Moscow , how it works, etc.???

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Did a June 7-19, 2011, Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik . Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. What you said makes perfect sense. Thanks.

I also looked into doing this tour privately, but one tour provider informed me there were no available trains or planes to fit my ship's time in port. We will be there on a weekend so its possible that transportation does not run as frequent. I just wish Celebrity could get their act together and tell me definitively whether they will be offering the Moscow excursion.

If your cruise puts you into St. Petersburg on a weekend, that could be another complicating factor. Openings at certain places, rail schedules, etc., could be different for some days of the week. It is possible to do the Moscow trip by some private tour companies, but if there are any weather and/or scheduling complications, that could make things more difficult. Doing it through the cruise ship, makes it "their" problem, not yours!!

Doing the one-day trip to Moscow is very interesting and special. Lots of cruise lines do it now and have the practice down to a "science". BUT, that weekend timing could be delaying their finalization some on schedules.

I was able to book this for a June cruise in the past few days. If you look carefully in the fine print for the excursion, I believe it is because you have to begin the online check-in process since they need your passport/ID information before you can book this excursion. Try to do as much of the online check-in as you can, and I think it should appear for purchase.

It would be nice to know what the actual schedule for the Moscow excursion is. I don't believe it is actually 18.5 hours, but that is just to make sure that you can't book anything else on that day.

I was finally able to book the tour online. They just made it available for online booking the other day. I sure hope they reach the minimum number of guests so it isn't cancelled.

Not sure why it leaves at 9:30. If it indeed is an 18.5 hour tour, we won't get back until 4 am.

It looks like Celebrity edited the description to say that, for those excursions on a weekend, the actual tour will be shortened by about 2 hours due to less traffic on a weekend.

Terry (or anyone who has been on the Journey to Moscow excursion before):

Can you give me a little detail on the itinerary? The tour description says that we will have a walking tour of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as visits to the Armoury and one of the Kremlin cathedrals. Was wondering what other Moscow sights we will get to see. Or will the rest be in the form of a panoramic bus tour? Any opportunity for souvenir shopping?

Thanks for any insights you can offer.

This was just cancelled for my cruise :( Didn't meet the minimum number of people interested in going.

There might be some options through private tour companies. We used Anastasia for our part in St. Petersburg, but she is doing these Moscow arrangements for friends, two couples, from here in Central Ohio, in late June. I would contact a couple of key, experiences firms such as Anastasia, see what she and others can offer to make this one-day train trip over and back.

Which sailing are you on that the Moscow excursion was cancelled? I booked it for my Eclipse cruise June 23 sailing and haven't heard anything

You have probably figured out now that not only excursions, but many other things aboard ship are misleading, if not downright fraudulent. The ship crew, staff and clerks are all going to do pretty much what they want to, but not only on the Royal Caribbean's Celebrity brand, but almost all cruise ships - the captain can almost get away with murder. Aren't you glad you don't have to work on one of these vessels? Also make sure you don't get involved in any type of dispute, as even some crime gets swept under the ship - well, not all, like the Costa that crashed & tipped over, but not sure even then much will happen, as all passengers signed all their rights away before they got on board.

Hope you have enjoyed your cruise by now and maybe look back here on the board. About the only way to get any knowledge about the ships, excursions, etc. is through sites like this.

As we are sailing a year from now on Celebrity Constellation - Aug 12, we were wondering too about shows aboard, excursions (both ship and private), if you ever got to Moscow, etc. Please write to us at:

We will be in St. Petersburg in July and want to take Celebrity's tour to Moscow. Please let us know if you liked it or not and how long it was. This is going to be our second time in St. Petersburg but will like to take a private tour on day #2. Did you do something the day after your Moscow tour? We are traveling with our teenagers and worry about them being too tired

I thought I would bump this up. We will be on the Brilliance this time next year and are very interested in doing this our. Are there still people out there that have done it? I would love to hear what you thought of the tour, the travel part and what you were able to see while in Moscow. Was it worth the price?

I thought I would bump this up. We will be on the Brilliance this time next year and are very interested in doing this our. Are there still people out there that have done it? I would love to hear what you thought of the tour' date=' the travel part and what you were able to see while in Moscow. Was it worth the price?[/quote'] We just did this tour and really liked it, but this was our second time in St. Petersburg. If this is your first time there I don't know if it's the best choice. You spend most of the day in airports and buses. Our meeting time at the ship was 6:45 AM, followed by a 45 min. long drive to the airport. Then we had to wait for a 10:00 AM one hour flight to Moscow. As you can see we arrived after 11:00 AM followed by another 30 minutes ride to the city. We were taken to the Red Square, to take a subway ride, followed by a coffee and tea break, then to the Kremlin armory museum (where we spend most of our time), also visited the Cathedral of the Annunciation, and back to the Red Square. Were only given half hour for shopping, followed by a really long dinner at a local restaurant. Our flight back to St. Petersburg departed half hour late, arriving at 11:30 PM. It took a while for the bus to pick us up, another 45 min. drive to the port and we were at our rooms by 1:00 AM. This means that if you want to see St. Petersburg the next day, you are going to be really tired. BTW, I'm not complaining, this tour was so popular on our cruise that they had two groups for the first time. Most of my friends were on that group and they had the worst time. Their flight left earlier than ours and although they were taken to more places than us, they ended up on a later flight and arrived in St. Petersburg after 12:30 AM. The problem was that the tour company knew that they were not going to make it on time to the bridges that connect the city to the area where the ship docks. The elevated bridges go up at 1:30 AM in the morning and are taken back after 5:00 AM. Can you believe that our tour guide made fun of the fact that the other bus was not going to make it on time? It was really frustrating for them to watch the bridges go up in front of their eyes. They finally found online a bridge that goes down for periods of 15 min. and were able to go back to the ship after 3:00 AM. Some of them couldn't make it to their tours the next day. Remember, this is Russia, if you don't make it to your tour the next day, you won't be able to leave the ship. My friends tried to take a taxi and catch up with us, but their visa stated a 9:00AM pick up time and had to stay on the ship. We liked our tour, but it is up to you to decide if it's worth it. The time that you actually spend in Moscow is really limited. If by any chance you are given a late flight on your way back, start screaming and demand an earlier flight. The tour company hired by Celebrity is going to buy the cheapest flights to make more money. Just my two cents. I tried to research this tour before our cruise and didn't find too much information. Hope this helps. BTW, I was concern about the planes used for the flights, if you are too, don't be. The flight was great and were even given a sandwich with juice or water. I do have to say that we felt that we were on a PanAm 1970's flight. The attendants were all really young, skinny and beautiful, wore heavy make up and complicated hair styles. I was also not impressed by either St. Petersburg or Moscow's airports. No restrooms close to the gates, two flights leaving at the same time through the same gate, just a mess!! Before our tour I couldn't understand how Edward Snowden could hide for such a long time on an airport, after visiting Moscow's international airport it just made sense. Hope you enjoy your Baltic cruise.

The_Big_M

Thanks for the details. I was quite curious about it. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like you got to see so much there. Fortunately as you say it was your second time in SPB, so you can compare and see the differences between the cities. They are very different.

On our Celebrity cruise, it was sold out, but I didn't come across anyone who took the tour to find out their experiences.

drarill, I had to laugh at the comment about how Snowden was able to hide in the airport ... I had wondered the same thing, but now we know!! LOL

Thank you for posting your experience. You have given me a lot to think about. It just seemed like a good idea, now I need to think really hard about it. I would hate to have our second day messed up in SPB.

We did Celebrity's Journey to Moscow excursion in July 2012. We had been to St. Petersburg before so decided to do something different. Interestingly, this excursion had been cancelled on some of the previous cruises that summer as a result of not enough people signed up. There were about 20 people on our excursion.

In a nutshell, I recommend the excursion and would do it again, but there are some caveats:

1. I would probably not go to Moscow if this was my first time visiting St. Petersburg. SP is full of wonderful sites so I would spend my two port days there seeing all the city sites, including the Hermitage, as well as visiting one of the palaces outside the city.

2. If you go to Moscow and plan on taking a tour in SP the next day, be aware (as someone else posted) that the tour returns to the ship very late and you might have difficulty getting up early enough the next morning for your SP tour. Our flight didn't land back in SP until after midnight and we were unable to cross the bridges before they rose. We didn't return back to the ship until after 2am, but because we anticipated that this might happen, we booked an afternoon private car in SP. We actually ended up enjoying being out late in SP with the bridges up as our bus and guide drove us around the city late at night and it was a surreal experience, especially during the white nights of summer.

3. We thought the time in Moscow could have been better organized, allowing us more time to see Red Square and the Kremlin buildings, but we were prevented from doing so due to horrendous traffic around Moscow, a very long-winded local tour guide, and too much time spent stopping for a coffee break (which was entirely unnecessary IMO). We also had almost no time to shop and the time spent in Red Square was much too short. Again, I mostly blamed this on our guide who talked too much rather than allowing us free time to wander around. I ditched the guide and our group before we were actually dismissed for free time so that I could wander around Red Square and make a few purchases from a street artist (local art and crafts on the street are of high quality and inexpensive IMO).

4. The dinner, while served in a beautiful, elegant setting, was mediocre at best. Lots of alcohol, but I've had better beef stroganoff in a school cafeteria.

Having provided you with these caveats, I still would take the tour again. It was a fascinating and magical experience. From the very interesting airport and airplane experience, to having the opportunity to visit the Kremlin sites and Red Square, it was worth it for us. It was a whirlwind of a tour, lasting about 18 hours from the time we left the ship until we returned.

I hope this helps others make a decision about this tour.

  • 3 years later...
I was finally able to book the tour online. They just made it available for online booking the other day. I sure hope they reach the minimum number of guests so it isn't cancelled.   Not sure why it leaves at 9:30. If it indeed is an 18.5 hour tour, we won't get back until 4 am.

We are on May 21, 2017 Eclipse and want to do the same tour.

There are several trains per day even on weekends and holidays. If it is the weekend I would say you are better off flying as traffic will be a little better than on a weekday especially in the morning. There are probably several flights an hour. The train is modern and comfortable but not especially scenic.

Since you need a visa anyway you could also consider arranging a Moscow tour guide to meet you at the airport and arrange your own transport to Moscow. An airport taxi should be easy to arrange in St Petersburg or use Uber. Aeroflot tickets are easy to buy online.
