You’ll receive an email as soon as your application has been processed and approved. You should apply as soon as possible to make sure you get your ETA in time for your trip to Pakistan.

Is the Pakistan ETA the same as the Visa on Arrival?

Yes. The Pakistan Visa on Arrival and the ETA are the same. This permit is known by both names but it is the exact same visa.

The Pakistan ETA or Visa on Arrival is not to be confused with the Pakistan eVisa, which is a different type of online visa.

What’s the difference between the Pakistan ETA and the Pakistan eVisa?

The Pakistan ETA and Pakistan eVisa are both electronic travel permits, but there are some differences .

The eligible countries are different for the eVisa and Visa on Arrival. Most nationalities that can apply for the eVisa cannot get the Visa on Arrival, and vice versa.

Other key differences include the permitted length of stay and processing time for each visa. Check all the information for each permit before you apply.

Can I get a multiple-entry ETA for Pakistan?

The Pakistan ETA is usually issued as a single-entry permit . You can travel to Pakistan once for up to 30 days.

Holders of passports issued by Malaysia, Turkey, or the UAE may be issued a multiple-entry visa.

What are the photo requirements to apply for the Pakistan eTA?

You need to provide a photo of your face and the top part of your shoulders. Take the photo against a plain, light-colored background and make sure there are no shadows.

Other requirements include:

  • Eyes open, looking straight at the camera
  • Glasses should not be worn
  • Face and shoulders visible and straight
  • Clear and focused image
  • No red eye or reflected camera flashes
  • No one except the applicant can appear

There is a special type of eTA for business in Pakistan, the Business Visa on Arrival . You must be from an eligible country and some additional documentation is required to support your application.

How long is the Pakistan Business Visa on Arrival valid?

The Pakistan Online Business Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days . This means that you can use it to enter Pakistan any time within 90 days of the date of issue.

Once you enter the country, you can stay for a maximum period of 30 days.

Do I need a visa to visit Pakistan?

One of Asia’s most fascinating countries, Pakistan lies off the mainstream travel map, but those who do visit rave about its historic monuments, spectacular scenery, fabulous food and richly layered culture. Visiting throws up some challenges, but it’s getting easier all the time, helped by an improving security situation and easing visa regulations.

If you’re up for the adventure of seeing one of Asia’s true frontiers, away from the tourist crowds, here’s everything you need to know about getting a visa for Pakistan.

Who needs a visa for Pakistan?

Visitors from most countries need a visa to enter Pakistan, and the rules vary from nationality to nationality. The good news is that most of the application process is now handled online. Citizens of 192 nations can apply for a visa via the Ministry of Interior’s (sometimes temperamental) visa portal . To use the system, you’ll need to register using your passport number and email address.

Can I get a visa on arrival?

Citizens of more than 60 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and most EU countries, can obtain an electronic travel authorization (ETA) online. This allows you to travel to Pakistan and obtain a visa on arrival. The application process is straightforward, but the website can be glitchy, so apply in plenty of time – at least 72 hours before you travel, and ideally a few weeks ahead.

A special 30-day tourist visa is granted on arrival for some nationalities, including citizens of Turkey, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. The online visa system can also be used to apply for business visas and special visas for trekking and mountaineering groups.

What are the rules for Indian travelers?

Owing to their shared colonial past,  India and Pakistan have a complicated relationship. Indian citizens have to carry out extra steps to obtain a visa for Pakistan. Tourist visas are not available, but Indian citizens can apply for visas to visit family and friends, do business, and visit religious sites.

The Pakistan government visa portal does not work in India and visa applications are typically handled by Pakistani embassies and high commissions. If you are a non-resident Indian citizen, contact your local Pakistani diplomatic mission for advice. Note that Indian citizens can only arrive and leave Pakistan via certain designated airports and land border crossings.

What information do I need for the visa application?

When you apply for a visa, you’ll be asked about your travel history and travel plans and your marital status, education, financial status, and other personal details. You’ll also need to provide various details about your father and mother. Not all of the information requested is required; a PDF guide is available to help you work out which sections you need to fill in.

When you apply for your ETA, you’ll need to upload scans of your passport and a digital passport-style photo, and pay the visa fee using a bank card. You’ll also be asked to upload “supporting documents” – for independent travelers, proof of a hotel booking should suffice. If you’re joining a tour, you’ll need a letter of invitation from the agency arranging your trip. If you’re staying with friends or family, ask them to provide a letter of invitation.

Depending on your circumstances, there’s a chance you may be asked to attend an interview at the nearest Pakistan embassy or high commission (find details for Pakistan’s overseas missions online ).

Where can I get a Visa on Arrival?

Visas are issued on arrival to travelers with valid ETAs at Pakistan’s main international airports, including Karachi , Lahore and Islamabad . The process is reasonably efficient – you’ll need to print the ETA confirmation email and carry the printout with you to show to border officials to get the necessary stamps.

Don’t rely on being able to enter Pakistan by land with an ETA (including via the Attari-Wagah border crossing between Amritsar and Lahore). If you plan to enter overland, contact your local Pakistani embassy or high commission for advice. Travelers cannot apply for an Indian visa in Pakistan; if you intend to cross back into India, make sure you have a valid multiple-entry visa for India when you enter Pakistan.

How long are visas valid for?

Three-month single-entry or multiple-entry tourist visas are fairly easy to obtain for most travelers, and longer visas valid for six months or one year are available for some nationalities. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond the date you apply, and the ETA is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, so you must travel to Pakistan within this period.

Visa fees vary depending on your nationality, the duration of the visa, and the number of entries. British and American citizens pay US$60/90 for a three-month tourist visa (single/multiple entry), while German citizens pay US$50/75 and French citizens pay US$35/52.50. Check the fee for your nationality using the online fee calculator .

Can I get a visa extension?

Theoretically, tourist visas can be extended for up to six months but approval isn’t guaranteed. The best time to apply is a few weeks before the end of your existing visa, via the Ministry of the Interior . If you are traveling with a Visa on Arrival, you may be able to apply for an extension via the government’s visa portal.

Off-limits areas of Pakistan

Even with a visa, some parts of Pakistan are inaccessible to travelers unless you have special permission from the government. This includes areas close to the borders with China and Afghanistan and districts close to the Line of Control – the de facto border between India and Pakistan in the disputed territory of Azad Kashmir.

The same rule used to cover many other parts of the country, but in 2019, the government of Imran Khan relaxed the requirement for official permission to visit areas such as the Swat Valley and Chitral. However, the rules are in constant flux, so check locally to see if permission is currently required.

To visit restricted areas of the country, you’ll need to obtain a No Objection Certificate from the Pakistan Ministry of Interior. Application forms can be downloaded online but it may be easier to arrange a trip through a local tour agency so they can help with the paperwork.

Don’t rely on being able to obtain permission to travel close to Pakistan’s borders. The government maintains a list of prohibited areas that are currently closed to certain nationalities (and hard to reach for other nationalities too).

Presenting your documents in Pakistan

Wherever you travel in Pakistan, you’ll need to show your passport and visa periodically at police checkposts, so make photocopies of each and keep these handy. You’ll also need to register with the local authorities to visit many areas, including Gilgit-Baltistan on the Karakoram Highway .

Travelers may also be required to take a police escort to visit certain locations, including parts of Sindh and southern Punjab. While having an armed entourage might sound alarming, this is usually done out of an overabundance of caution, rather than because there is a serious danger.

This said, it’s a good policy to monitor travel advisory notices from your home government for the current trouble spots. If your government warns against “all travel” to a specific location in Pakistan, your travel insurance will probably not be valid if you do visit.

Pakistan’s visa policy states that if you wish to stay in Pakistan for more than 3 months, it is possible to extend the Pakistan eVisa for a stay of up to 6 months by applying for an extension online once in the country.

If your passport is lost, damaged, or stolen before you travel to Pakistan you must reapply for a new eVisa using your new passport details. This is due to the fact that the eVisa to Pakistan is linked electronically to your US passport.

A Brief History of Pakistan

The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world and dating back at least 5,000 years, spread over much of what is presently Pakistan. During the second millennium B.C., remnants of this culture fused with the migrating Indo-Aryan peoples. The area underwent successive invasions in subsequent centuries from the Persians, Greeks, Scythians, Arabs (who brought Islam), Afghans, and Turks. The Mughal Empire flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries; the British came to dominate the region in the 18th century. The separation in 1947 of British India into the Muslim state of Pakistan (with West and East sections) and largely Hindu India was never satisfactorily resolved, and India and Pakistan fought two wars - in 1947-48 and 1965 - over the disputed Kashmir territory. A third war between these countries in 1971 - in which India capitalized on Islamabad's marginalization of Bengalis in Pakistani politics - resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. In response to Indian nuclear weapons testing, Pakistan conducted its own tests in 1998. The dispute over the state of Kashmir is ongoing, but discussions and confidence-building measures have helped the two countries begin to work through their issues. In February 2008, Pakistan held parliamentary elections and in September 2008, after the resignation of former President MUSHARRAF, elected Asif Ali ZARDARI to the presidency. Pakistani government and military leaders are struggling to control domestic insurgents, many of whom are located in the tribal areas adjacent to the border with Afghanistan. India-Pakistan relations have been rocky since the November 2008 Mumbai attacks, but both countries are taking small steps to put relations back on track.

U.S. Visa: Reciprocity and Civil Documents by Country

Share this page:

Reciprocity Schedule

Select a visa category below to find the visa issuance fee, number of entries, and validity period for visas issued to applicants from this country*/area of authority.

Explanation of Terms

Visa Classification: The type of nonimmigrant visa you are applying for.

Fee: The reciprocity fee, also known as the visa issuance fee, you must pay. This fee is in addition to the nonimmigrant visa application fee (MRV fee).

Number of Entries: The number of times you may seek entry into the United States with that visa. "M" means multiple times. If there is a number, such as "One", you may apply for entry one time with that visa.

Validity Period: This generally means the visa is valid, or can be used, from the date it is issued until the date it expires, for travel with that visa. If your Validity Period is 60 months, your visa will be valid for 60 months from the date it is issued.

Visa Classifications

Country specific footnotes.

Although care has been taken to ensure the accuracy, completeness and reliability of the information provided, please contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you plan to apply if you believe this information is in error or if you have further questions.

Visa Category Footnotes

The validity of A-3, G-5, and NATO 7 visas may not exceed the validity of the visa issued to the person who is employing the applicant. The "employer" would have one of the following visa classifications:

  • G-1 through G-4
  • NATO 1 through NATO 6

An E-1 and E-2 visa may be issued only to a principal alien who is a national of a country having a treaty, or its equivalent, with the United States. E-1 and E-2 visas may not be issued to a principal alien if he/she is a stateless resident or national of a country without a treaty.  *When the spouse and children of an E-1 or E-2 principal alien are accorded derivative E-1 or E-2 status and are themselves a national of a country that does not have a treaty with the United States – the reciprocity schedule, including any reciprocity fees, of the principal alien’s country of nationality should be used.  **Spouse and children of an E-1 or E-2 visa principal applicant, where the spouse and children are also nationals of a country that has a treaty with the United States – the reciprocity schedule, including any reciprocity fees, of the spouse and children’s country of nationality should be used.

*Example 1: John Doe is a national of Country A that has an E-1/E-2 treaty with the U.S. however his wife and child are nationals of Country B which has no treaty with the U.S. The wife and child would, therefore, be entitled to derivative status and receive the same reciprocity as John Doe, the principal visa holder. **Example 2:  Mike Doe is a national of Country Y that has an E-1/E-2 treaty with the U.S. however his wife and child are nationals of Country Z that also has a treaty with the U.S. The wife and child would, therefore, be entitled to derivative status and receive the reciprocity issued to nationals of Country Z.

The validity of H-1 through H-3, O-1 and O-2, P-1 through P-3, and Q visas may not exceed the period of validity of the approved petition or the number of months shown, whichever is less.

Under 8 CFR §214.2, H-2A and H-2B petitions may generally only be approved for nationals of countries that the Secretary of Homeland Security has designated as participating countries. The current list of eligible countries is available on USCIS's website for both H-2A and H-2B visas. Nationals of countries not on this list may be the beneficiary of an approved H-2A or H2-B petition in limited circumstances at the discretion of the Department of Homeland Security if specifically named on the petition.

Derivative H-4, L-2, O-3, and P-4 visas, issued to accompanying or following-to-join spouses and children, may not exceed the validity of the visa issued to the principal alien.

There is no reciprocity fee for the issuance of a J visa if the alien is a United States Government grantee or a participant in an exchange program sponsored by the United States Government.

Also, there is no reciprocity fee for visa issuance to an accompanying or following-to-join spouse or child (J-2) of an exchange visitor grantee or participant.

In addition, an applicant is eligible for an exemption from the MRV fee if he or she is participating in a State Department, USAID, or other federally funded educational and cultural exchange program (program serial numbers G-1, G-2, G-3 and G-7).

However, all other applicants with U.S. Government sponsorships, including other J-visa applicants, are subject to the MRV processing fee.

Under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canadian and Mexican nationals coming to engage in certain types of professional employment in the United States may be admitted in a special nonimmigrant category known as the "trade NAFTA" or "TN" category. Their dependents (spouse and children) accompanying or following to join them may be admitted in the "trade dependent" or "TD" category whether or not they possess Canadian or Mexican nationality. Except as noted below, the number of entries, fees and validity for non-Canadian or non-Mexican family members of a TN status holder seeking TD visas should be based on the reciprocity schedule of the TN principal alien.

Canadian Nationals

Since Canadian nationals generally are exempt from visa requirement, a Canadian "TN' or "TD" alien does not require a visa to enter the United States. However, the non-Canadian national dependent of a Canadian "TN", unless otherwise exempt from the visa requirement, must obtain a "TD" visa before attempting to enter the United States. The standard reciprocity fee and validity period for all non-Canadian "TD"s is no fee, issued for multiple entries for a period of 36 months, or for the duration of the principal alien's visa and/or authorized period of stay, whichever is less. See 'NOTE' under Canadian reciprocity schedule regarding applicants of Iranian, Iraqi or Libyan nationality.

Mexican Nationals

Mexican nationals are not visa-exempt. Therefore, all Mexican "TN"s and both Mexican and non-Mexican national "TD"s accompanying or following to join them who are not otherwise exempt from the visa requirement (e.g., the Canadian spouse of a Mexican national "TN") must obtain nonimmigrant visas.

Applicants of Iranian, Iraqi, Libyan, Somalian, Sudanese, Syrian or Yemeni nationality, who have a permanent resident or refugee status in Canada/Mexico, may not be accorded Canadian/Mexican reciprocity, even when applying in Canada/Mexico. The reciprocity fee and period for "TD" applicants from Libya is $10.00 for one entry over a period of 3 months. The Iranian and Iraqi "TD" is no fee with one entry over a period of 3 months.

Q-2 (principal) and Q-3 (dependent) visa categories are in existence as a result of the 'Irish Peace Process Cultural and Training Program Act of 1998'. However, because the Department anticipates that virtually all applicants for this special program will be either Irish or U.K. nationals, the Q-2 and Q-3 categories have been placed only in the reciprocity schedules for those two countries. Q-2 and Q-3 visas are available only at the Embassy in Dublin and the Consulate General in Belfast.

No S visa may be issued without first obtaining the Department's authorization.

V-2 and V-3 status is limited to persons who have not yet attained their 21st birthday. Accordingly, the period of validity of a V-2 or V-3 visa must be limited to expire on or before the applicant's twenty-first birthday.

Posts may not issue a T-1 visa. A T-1 applicant must be physically present in the United States, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands or a U.S. port of entry, where he/she will apply for an adjustment of status to that of a T-1. The following dependents of a T-1 visa holder, however, may be issued a T visa at a U.S. consular office abroad:

  • T-2 (spouse)
  • T-3 (child)
  • T-4 (parent)

The validity of NATO-5 visas may not exceed the period of validity of the employment contract or 12 months, whichever is less.

The validity of CW-1 and CW-2 visas shall not exceed the maximum initial period of admission allowed by DHS (12 months) or the duration of the transition period ending December 31, 2014, whichever is shortest.

The validity of E-2C visas shall not exceed the maximum initial period of admission allowed by DHS (24 months) or the duration of the transition period ending December 31, 2014, whichever is shortest.

General Documents

General document information.

The Union Council, Municipal Corporation, Cantonment Board, and Capital Development Authority (CDA) offices are responsible for the registration of births, marriages, divorces, and deaths in Pakistan.

Until 1961, Municipal Corporations were responsible for the registration of births and deaths in large cities.

In 1961, however, Pakistan passed the Muslim Family Law Ordinance (MFLO) to formalize marriage and divorce processes. Today, registration authorities can only register Muslim marriages and divorces in accordance with provisions set forth by the MFLO. Records for non-Muslims are still registered with their respective community head offices.

General Issuing Authority Information

Local Union Councils, Cantonment Boards, Municipal Corporations, the CDA (Islamabad only), and NADRA all issue civil documents.

Birth, Death, Burial Certificates

Birth certificates.

Fees:  The   fees vary by location.

Document Name:  Birth certificate, Child Registration Certificate

Issuing Authority:  Birth certificates issued by local Union Councils, Municipal Corporations, the Office of the Cantonment Board, or the CDA are acceptable, as are Family Registration Certificates (FRC) issued by NADRA.  In larger cities, such as Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi etc., Municipal Corporation-issued birth certificates prior to 2001 are also acceptable.

Special Seal(s) / Color / Format:  This varies by location.

Issuing Authority Personnel Title:  There is no issuing authority personnel title.

Registration Criteria:  Births are to be registered with the Union Council within two months.

Procedure for Obtaining:  Applicants must visit their local Union Council, fill out a form, and provide identification. The process for late registration is more complex, requiring two affidavits to be submitted to the concerning authority (the municipal corporation or small claims court, depending on the length of time after birth).  The concerning authority then issues a letter to the Union Council authorizing the late entry. Once this process has been completed, the applicants may visit the Union Council to register.

Certified Copies Available:  Certified copies are available.

Alternate Documents:  In lieu of a birth certificate, Pakistanis often use Child Registration Certificates or Family Registration Certificates (FRC), which list all family members and document each member’s relationship to the other.

Exceptions:  None

Comments:  Birth records are inconsistent because most people only request one when required for a specific reason. Late-registered births are thus quite common.  In cases when the date of birth is in issue (such as age-limited immigrant visa classes), other contemporaneous documents such as school records are often reviewed. Birth certificates can be in either English or Urdu with English translation.

Death Certificates

Fees:  Fees vary by location.

Document Name:   Death Certificate

Issuing Authority:  Union Councils, Cantonment Boards, Municipal Corporations and the CDA (for Islamabad only)

Special Seal(s) / Color / Format:   This varies by location.

Registration Criteria:  Deaths are to be registered with the authorities listed above.  However, there is no required time frame to report a death.

Procedure for Obtaining:  A certificate of death can be obtained from a Union Council, Municipal Corporation, or the CDA (for residents of Islamabad).  Cantonment Boards in urban areas are also authorized to issue death certificates.  In locations where a proper cemetery registration system exists, local authorities accept cemetery receipts as proof of death.  A death certificate issued by a hospital is also acceptable as proof for a death registration.  In cases where a death occurred at home, affidavits from close relatives are required to register the death.

In addition to a death certificate, a National Identity Card Cancellation request may be obtained from NADRA as secondary proof of death.

Alternate Documents:  There are no alternate documents.

Comments:  Records of deaths are inconsistent because most people only request such certificates when required for a specific reason.

Marriage, Divorce Certificates

Marriage certificates.

Fees:  Fees vary.

Document Name: For U.S. immigration purposes, Pakistani Muslim applicants must present both an original, signed   Nikah Nama (with its English translation) and a NADRA-issued marriage registration certificate. Note that while both documents reflect similar information, each on its own does not constitute sufficient proof of marriage.

Christians, Hindus, Ahmadis, and other applicants considered to be non-Muslim must present only a marriage certificate issued by their respective religious authority (i.e. a church or temple), since Union Councils do not uniformly issue NADRA certificates to these groups.

Citizens of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Afghans living in Pakistan must also only present a marriage certificate issued by religious authorities, as Union Councils do not issue NADRA certificates to these groups.

Issuing Authority: Union Councils register Nikah Nama documents for Pakistani Muslim citizens and issue subsequent NADRA marriage certificates.  Marriage certificates for Ahmadis, Christians, Hindus, Parsis, and other non-Muslim citizens are issued by their respective sectarian registration authority (i.e. church or temple), (Note: Some Union Councils have begun issuing NADRA marriage certificates to Hindus and Christians, though this process has not yet been standardized. As a result, such NADRA certificates are not required for non-Muslim applicants, per the above.)

Special Seal(s) / Color / Format:  This varies by location and religion.

Issuing Authority Personnel Title:  For Muslim applicants registering a Nikah Nama, the Secretary of the local Union Council and the Nikah Registrar constitute the appropriate authorities.

For non-Muslim applicants, priests or other religious leaders are considered appropriate issuing authorities.

Registration Criteria:  For Muslim applicants, the marriage registrar signs and stamps each original Nikah Nama, submitting the first copy to the local Union Council and providing the second and third copies to the bride and groom. The registrar keeps the fourth copy. In theory, the Nikah Registrar should register the marriage within two months, but this does not always occur. Upon registration, the Union Council issues a NADRA marriage certificate.

While there are penal consequences for not registering one’s marriage with the appropriate authorities, a signed Nikah Nama alone still constitutes a valid marriage under Pakistani law, according to the MFLO. For immigration purposes, however, the Nikah must be registered with and a NADRA marriage certificate issued by the Union Council.

Ahmadi, Christian, Hindu, and Parsi marriage certificates are issued by church or temple leaders and are not generally registered with the local Union Council).

Procedure for Obtaining:  Muslim applicants can obtain and Urdu-language Nikah Nama from the Nikah Registrar. Ahmadis, Christians, Hindus, and other non-Muslim applicants can obtain marriage certificates from their local religious authorities.

Alternate Documents:  No alternate documents are available or accepted.

Exceptions:

Comments:  Both the Nikah Nama and NADRA marriage certificate are required for a Muslim marriage to be considered valid for U.S. immigration purposes.

Divorce Certificates

Fees:   Fees vary by location.

Document Name:  Khula, Talaq, and Divorce Certificate

Issuing Authority:  Union Council

Special Seal(s) / Color / Format: This varies by location.

Issuing Authority Personnel Title: The Chairman of the Union Council, who also often serves as the Head of the Arbitration Council.

Registration Criteria:   Pakistani divorce laws for Muslims are governed by the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance (MFLO).  While the laws are complicated, all procedures set forth by the MFLO must be followed for divorces to be recognized for immigration purposes.  In general, couples seeking a divorce must submit a written notification to the Union Council of the wife’s residence, after which an Arbitration Council is formed to foster reconciliation between both parties over a 90-day period.  A divorce is finalized if the couple fails to reconcile at the end of this 90-day period.  (For more information on the process, see “Procedure for Obtaining” below.)

Procedure for Obtaining:  Muslim divorces in Pakistan are subject to arbitration, and the process of divorce differs depending on whether it is initiated by the husband (Talaq) or the wife (Khula).  For men initiating a divorce, husbands must verbally “divorce” their wife by pronouncing ‘talaq.’  As soon as possible, the divorcing husband must then give written notification to the Union Council where the wife resides or where the wedding took place.  Within 30 days of receipt of the notice of Talaq, the Union Council Chairman must constitute an Arbitration Council in order to see if reconciliation is possible between the husband and wife.  After the Council convenes, it must issue notices to both parties every month for three months in an attempt to foster reconciliation.  After three months (90 days), either party may request a failure of reconciliation certificate from the Union Council/Arbitration Council, upon which date the divorce is considered final and valid.  (For more information, refer to Section 7 of the MFLO.)

Note that a divorce in Pakistan is only considered valid at the end of this 90-day period, assuming the parties have failed to reconcile.  Neither party may remarry (in Pakistan or elsewhere) until this 90-day period has passed and the divorce is finalized.  The Union Council divorce certificate – typically handwritten – will indicate if the divorce was a Talaq (initiated by the husband) or Khula (by the wife – see below).  In recent years, Union Councils have begun to produce NADRA divorce certificates.  If a NADRA-issued divorce certificate is provided for an older divorce, the original Union Council certificate should also be provided.  The specific form for the Union Council certificate will vary by location.  In all cases, copies of the arbitration notices should be available upon request.

Procedures for properly executing an Ahmadi, Christian, Hindu, or Parsi divorce differ.  Typically, divorce certificates for these sects are issued by a Family Court after the filing of a legal case and are not generally registered with the local authorities.

Khula divorces:  There are two possible procedures for Muslim women to obtain a Khula divorce.  First, a husband can grant his wife the right of divorce by stating "yes" on line 18 of the Nikah Nama (which is rare).  If this right is granted, the wife follows the same procedure as the Talaq process described above.  If the wife is not granted this right, she must first bring her case to a Family Court to request the right to initiate a divorce.  If her suit is successful, the Family Court must submit its decision to the Union Council within seven days.  The Union Council will then initiate the Arbitration Council and follow the same procedures described above.  In reality, however, the Family Court often does not inform the Union Council of its decision. If the court grants the divorce but does not notify the Union Council, it is incumbent upon the wife to do so herself in order for the divorce to be valid.  Once the wife notifies the Union Council, the same procedure as for Talaq is followed.  If the parties reconcile during the arbitration process, however, the court decision will be null and void, and the couple will remain married.

If a husband and wife divorce and subsequently wish to remarry each other, the wife must have married another person in the interim and that intervening marriage must be legally terminated by proper divorce proceedings or death.  The interim marriage must be consummated and represent a bona fide relationship, according to Section 7 of the MFLO.

Certified Copies Available:   Certified copies are available

Alternate Documents:  In most cases, NADRA-issued divorce registration certificates are acceptable substitutes for Union Council-issued divorce certificates.  Divorces documented on rupee paper are not acceptable for immigration purposes unless they are supplemented by an official certificate.

Exceptions:   Divorce records are inconsistent because most people only request such certificates when required for a specific reason.

Comments:  None

Adoption Certificates

Unavailable

Comments:  Islamic law, and, as a result, Pakistani law, does not recognize adoption.  Pakistanis often obtain various documents identified as "adoption deeds."  One common format is an "adoption deed" written on "rupee paper" and signed by the biological and "adoptive" parents.  As adoptions are not recognized in Pakistan, and "rupee paper" is not a legal document, these documents are not evidence of a legal adoption and, as such, are not acceptable for immigration purposes.  Even court documents claiming that a child has been adopted are not acceptable. Family courts, in an attempt to assist those who agree to care for the children of others, may state in the orders that an adoption has occurred, but this is not a legal adoption acceptable for immigration purposes.  At best, the court can grant guardianship of a child to a non-parental adult.  While such an order may be acceptable for an IR-4 visa if the child meets other qualifications, this order is not sufficient for immigration under other family-based visa categories.

Due to the complicated nature of cases involving adults caring for non-biological children, those wishing to take children to the U.S. for purposes of finalizing adoptions should first contact an immigration attorney or the U.S. Embassy for more information.

Police, Court, Prison Records

Police certificates.

Comments:  Pakistan does not have a nationwide system to track criminal activities.  Police Character Certificates are available for a fee from District Coordinating Offices.  However, they are not an accurate reflection of an individual's criminal record.  An applicant who has committed a crime in one district may be able to obtain a clean Character Certificate from that district or another.  Given the inaccuracy of these certificates, they are not required for consular processing.

Alternate Documents:  None.

Exceptions:   Passports are valid for travel to all countries except Israel.

Comments:   Pakistani passports are valid for five or ten years.  Pakistani names are subject to a variety of combinations with no established surname rule.  Individuals may change their names by simply announcing name changes in the newspaper.  It is not uncommon for birth dates to be changed.  The essential element of identity is generally the name of the father and, in the case of a married woman, the name of the husband. Diplomatic Passports (red cover):  Issued to ambassadors, career diplomats, heads of state of the government and federal ministers.

Official Passports (blue cover):  Issued to members of the National Assembly and their immediate family members, high-ranking civil service personnel, and military personnel traveling on official business.

Ordinary Passports (green cover):  Issued to any qualifying citizen of Pakistan for private travel.

Other Records

Educational documents, including primary and secondary school records, may also serve to verify Pakistani citizens’ age and identity so long as they were created contemporaneously with the events recorded and not after the fact. While practices vary by institution, many private and public schools issue registration documents that list students’ date of birth and parentage. Citizens can obtain these documents by contacting their school’s registrar office.

Immunization records often list the date of birth, names and addresses of the child and parents. As such, these records can also be taken as secondary proof of these facts so long as the document was produced at the same time as the recorded events.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Pakistan set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Pakistan High Commission in London or nearest Pakistani consulate .

COVID-19 rules

Travel to pakistan .

There are no COVID-19 vaccination requirements for travellers entering Pakistan.

On 3 January, owing to a rising number of cases in some countries, the Government of Pakistan announced that 2% of passengers arriving on international flights will be randomly selected and tested for COVID-19. Anyone who tests positive will be advised to self-isolate for five days.

Leaving Pakistan

Do not travel to the airport if you have COVID-19 symptoms. You may be thermal scanned or asked to a take COVID-19 rapid antigen test. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, you may be:

  • prevented from flying
  • asked to self-isolate for 5 days
  • referred to a medical facility

Public activities

There are no COVID-19 restrictions on public activities. Wearing a face mask in public is encouraged.

Testing positive for COVID-19 in Pakistan

Take a test if you have symptoms or if you may have been exposed to COVID-19.

If you test positive, you must self-isolate for 5 days. After that, you should then wear a face mask for 5 days.

Passport validity requirements

To avoid problems at immigration, make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of your visa application.

Contact Pakistan’s High Commission in the UK if you think that your passport does not meet this requirement.

Visa requirements

You will need a visa to enter or travel through Pakistan. For information on how to apply, see the Government of Pakistan’s online visa information .

Visas for journalists often have extra travel restrictions. Follow the terms of your visa, or you could be fined or detained.

Returning to the UK

You must have a valid visa, a Pakistani national identity card or a valid Pakistani passport to leave.

If you are travelling on a British passport and your visa has expired, you may not be allowed to board your flight unless you have a visa extension or an exit visa. Contact the Ministry of Interior or see the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports for information on visa extensions and exit visas.

Citizens of Pakistan overseas

If you hold a valid National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) or Smart National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (SNICOP) you can enter Pakistan without a visa and stay for an unlimited period. For more information see the website of Pakistan’s High Commission in the UK .

Travelling with children

If you’re travelling with a child as a single parent or are not the child’s parent, you may need to provide documentary evidence of parental responsibility before leaving Pakistan. This is particularly likely if the child is of Pakistani origin.

Travelling through Pakistan

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) advises against travel to most of the Pakistan-Afghanistan and Pakistan-Iran border areas. FCDO advises against all travel to Afghanistan and Iran.

Pakistan-Afghanistan border

All borders with Afghanistan can close at short notice. There has been overcrowding and violence at open border crossings.

The Torkham border crossing with Afghanistan is open to people with valid passports and Pakistan visas. You can apply for a visa on the Ministry of Interior website .

Illegal entry to Pakistan is a serious offence. If you cross from Afghanistan without the correct documentation you may be detained or deported. If you do enter Pakistan illegally, you will not be able to travel onward from Pakistan.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Pakistan guide .

Depending on your circumstances, these may include:

  • proof of polio vaccination
  • a yellow fever vaccination certificate

Health screening (other than COVID-19)

Due to recent cases of mpox (monkeypox) in 2023 there may be enhanced screening and preventative measures when you enter Pakistan.

Read more about mpox on TravelHealthPro .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of Pakistan . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Alcohol and pork

Importing alcohol or pork products is illegal. You could be detained if you try to import them.

  • Visa Requirements for Pakistani Citizens

pakistan visa for travel document holders

  • Evisa.Express
  • Requirements
  • Nationality

Visa requirements for citizens of Pakistan are stipulated by foreign countries' rules and conditions for Pakistani nationals to follow upon traveling abroad. The entry requirements are crucial to meet and determine whether or not you'll be allowed to cross the border with any selected country.

Unfortunately, as of now, Pakistani citizens do not have significant traveling liberty. Only 32 destinations make it possible for Pakistanis to enter either visa-free or get a Visa on Arrival. These statistics make the Pakistan passport rank very low in the overall travel freedom ranking.

Just as the visa requirements, the length of the permitted stay varies and depends on the selected destination and its entry rules. As far as electronic visas and Visas on Arrival are concerned, Pakistani citizens are allowed to have a stay of 14, 30, 90, or 180 days (and other). Traditional visas have a more complicated system, and the average stay length cannot be easily estimated.

As was already mentioned, Pakistanis can choose between using the Electronic Travel Authorization System, visas obtainable on arrival, and traditional visas handled at an Embassy. All of these travel permits are issued for leisure, professional, and transit-related usage.

eVisas and VoAs are documents that serve for short-term stays, usually up to 6 months or less at a time. On the contrary, Embassy visas can be issued for both short and long-term visits. Besides the basic recreational trips, traditional travel permits help with studying, working, and living abroad for a more extended period of time. This makes obtaining Embassy visas a bit more complex and time-consuming than the electronic or on-arrival ones.

Electronic visa for Pakistani citizens

eVisas work just like traditional visas but are far easier to obtain. The electronic system has been introduced to make traveling more accessible.

Pakistani citizens can now get their visas online without the need to visit an Embassy. Approved eVisa allows you to take on a vacation trip, a business venture abroad, or a short transit trip.

List of countries offering electronic visas for Pakistani citizens

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Ivory Coast
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis
  • Sao Tome and Principe

Only 25 countries allow Pakistanis to use the Electronic Travel Authorization System to travel abroad. Visit any of the above-listed destinations using eVisa as your entry document. You can get yours online following a quick and intuitive 3-step application process using any working device with an internet connection.

Electronic visas are usually issued for either one month or three months of stay for Pakistani passport holders. How long you can stay in a selected country depends on the pre-established entry rules. Check the requirements, eVisa types, and validity period, and the length of permitted stay before applying for your online visa.

Once you have the approved eVisa ready, you can book your flight and start planning your trip. It's possible to include the following activities in your itinerary:

  • exploring tourist destinations
  • trying the available tourist attractions
  • visiting friends and relatives living abroad
  • going a relaxing getaway
  • handling any professional matters
  • attending a seminar, conference, or a meeting
  • closing a new deal or looking for new business opportunities

Visa on Arrival

Visa on Arrival for Pakistani nationals is yet another travel authorization document that allows its holders to enter a selected foreign country for a stipulated amount of time. VoAs are the type of visas that can be handled only upon arrival at a border checkpoint.

List of countries that offer a Visa on Arrival for Pakistani citizens

  • Egypt (Egypt VoA is available only for ordinary passport holders with a valid GCC residence permit for at least 30 days)
  • Guinea Bissau
  • Guyana (only for invitation letter holders written by a sponsor or host)
  • Lebanon (upon meeting specific requirements)
  • The Maldives
  • Oman (Pakistani citizens applying for the Visa on Arrival must be holders of the GCC visa and be a white-collar worker, which needs to be mentioned on the document as well.)
  • Sierra Leone
  • Somalia (obtainable at the Bosaso Airport, Galcaio Airport, and the Mogadishu Airport.)

Pakistan passport holders can get their Visa on Arrival by simply going to the border checkpoint once already at the border. With your valid passport on hand, fill the Visa on Arrival application form with the necessary information, and if the country you're visiting requires this, cover the visa fees. Now, all there's left to do is waiting for approval.

Please note! VoAs also require travelers to meet a few requirements and validate the purpose of the trip by providing specified supporting documents and, in some cases, proof of having sufficient funds to cover the expenses of the stay. Check the current conditions to meet before leaving on your trip.

Moreover, it's worth noting that many countries that offer a VoA also provide an additional option of obtaining an eVisa prior to the planned trip. Applying for an eVisa online a few days in advance of departure ensures you are appropriately prepared.

Obtaining an eVisa instead of a VoA helps travelers avoid the long waiting lines at the airport and the stress connected with handling a visa last minute. Since you need a visa to travel to these destinations, either way, consider applying for an electronic one to save yourself time, money, and energy!

Embassy visa

An Embassy visa for Pakistani citizens is a traditional visa that is usually stamped into the applicant's passport. Obtainable directly at a selected foreign country's Embassy upon meeting the requirements and submitting an application with complete paperwork that validates the reason for the traveler's trip.

Nearly 200 countries require Pakistan passport holders to have a regular visa upon crossing the border. Thus, Pakistani citizens that plan on visiting any of the above-listed destinations must apply at an Embassy for a traditional visa first.

To apply for an Embassy visa, travelers must first contact the official authorities of the country they plan on visiting. Call or visit the Embassy of the selected country and ask for current visa requirements.

Next, prepare the required documents and submit your application. Sometimes, the Embassy may require you to undergo a visa interview and cover the fees. However, these steps depend on the foreign country's government.

Embassy visas may seem difficult to be obtained and sometimes are. However, the key to submitting a successfully approved application is to be appropriately prepared before applying. Ensure that you meet all of the current visa requirements and have all of the documents validating the reason for your trip.

It's best to start preparing for the application process at least a few weeks in advance of the planned trip. This will differ depending on the length of the visa processing time (which varies between different countries). However, in the case of regular visas, the waiting time is quite extensive.

Visa-free countries

Only 8 countries provide a complete visa exemption for Pakistan nationals. There are a few additional destinations that offer a visa-free entrance upon meeting some requirements. The additional conditions to meet include having a valid visa from any EU country, USA, Canada, or UK. This varies among the different destinations.

Read more about Visa-Free countries for Pakistani citizens .

Traveling under visa exemption is one of the easiest ways to do so. All you need is a valid Pakistani passport. There is no need to apply for a visa prior to arriving in any of the above-listed countries. Plan your trip, book your flight, and with your valid travel document on hand, get to your dream destination!

You can enjoy all recreational activities, such as going on a relaxing getaway trip, hiking, trying water sports, sunbathing, exploring the foreign country's attractions, learning more about the history and culture, and so much more! Traveling visa-free usually also allows Pakistanis to handle their business affairs, look for new work-related opportunities, or get educated at a seminar or conference.

Lastly, visa-free destinations make it possible for Pakistani citizens to transit through their territories without any travel authorization document and therefore reach any other final destination effortlessly.

Millions of visa holders in UK to be offered digital replacement as major eVisa rollout begins

M illions of people in the UK with physical immigration documents are being invited to switch to an eVisa as a major Home Office digital immigration shake-up begins.

The Government is aiming for a fully digital immigration and border system by 2025, the Home Office said on Wednesday.

From Wednesday April 17, visa holders in the UK will receive an email from the Home Office, inviting them to create a UK visas and immigration (UKVI) account to access their eVisa.

Physical documents, called biometric residence permits (BRPs), will be gradually phased out and nearly all visa holders living in the UK will have access to an eVisa by 2025, the Home Office has vowed.

The Government hopes the introduction of eVisas will reduce the risk of fraud, loss and abuse of physical documents and strengthen border security.

But the changes will also ease the travel process for millions of visa holders, who are currently required to show physical documentation when arriving back in the UK from travel and holidays abroad.

If a BRP card is lost or stolen abroad, a visa holder currently has to pay £154 for a one-time replacement, which would allow them to re-enter the UK.

Tom Pursglove, the minister for legal migration and the border, said replacing physical BRPs with a digital system “will ensure firm control over who comes here to live, work or study”.

Mr Pursglove added: “We’ve already taken really significant steps to digitally transform the border and immigration system, and this wider rollout of eVisas is a key part of that process.

“Replacing physical immigration documents with eVisas will ensure firm control over who comes here to live, work or study, strengthening border security and preventing abuse of the immigration system, while delivering cost-savings for UK taxpayers.”

Those who inspect immigration status will be able to conduct one check using an online service and visa customers will be able to access their digital status anywhere and in real time.

An eVisa is linked with the holder’s biometric information to protect against identity fraud. Invitations will initially be issued in phases.

The process will open to anyone in the UK who holds physical immigration documents in summer 2024.

Customers will be able to create a free UKVI account to access their eVisa.

Creating an account will not change, impact or remove their current immigration status or their rights in the UK.

UK digital visas to fully replace physical immigration documents by 2025

In the UK, the Home Office has announced that it will invite those with physical immigration documents to create a biometric eVisa via email as part of the government’s greater plan to introduce a digital immigration system , with the goal of implementing eVisas for almost all visa holders in the country by 2025.

The Home Office will send emails to those with physical immigration documents called biometric residence permits (BRPs), inviting them to make a UK Visas and Immigration account in order to access their digital visa. Users will be able to update their information associated with the document more easily.

The process, which is free for physical document holders, will be available to all permit holders in the summer of 2024. Most BRPs will expire by the end of 2024, and all physical immigration documents will be phased out by 2025. Until they expire, the Home Office says that customers should keep carrying their physical documents as they travel internationally.

eVisas reduce the risk of fraud and improve border security, as well as eliminate the ability for documents to be lost or stolen. The digital transition will increase automation and be the next step towards a contactless border.

“We’ve already taken really significant steps to digitally transform the border and immigration system, and this wider rollout of eVisas is a key part of that process,” said the Minister for Legal Migration and the Border Tom Pursglove.

Replacing physical documents with digital visas will “ensure firm control over who comes here to live, work or study, strengthening border security and preventing abuse of the immigration system, while delivering cost savings for UK taxpayers.”

People can check their immigration status using an online service on Gov.uk. Some public entities can already access immigration status to conduct eligibility checks for public services.

Customers should continue to carry their in-date physical immigration documents with them when they travel internationally, until they expire.

The government has already introduced the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) scheme with selfie biometrics provided by Entrust as part of the digitalization of the UK border and immigration system. ETA is a digital permission for those wanting to visit the UK but who do not need a visa. It allows for travelers to be screened before they depart.
