New Black Desert Resort to host first PGA Tour event in Utah in 60 years

Pga tour likes what it has seen in surveying utah’s newest golf course near ivins.

Literally, Black Desert Resort gained a giant piece of momentum for the new course located next to Entrada Golf Club in southern Utah.

It just opened in May.  

In the past 20 days, the Black Desert track landed a 2025 LPGA Tour event and a PGA Tour stop, the first Tour stop for Utah in 60 years.

The PGA Tour announced Friday that Utah’s newest golf course will host the Black Desert Championship in 2024. It will be part of the FedEx Cup fall series. In other words, many of the best golfers in the world will target Utah to chase Cup points.

This is huge.

The course hasn’t even cut its grass more than a few dozen times this summer and the world’s best players can now put two professional events on their calendar.

This is a home run for Utah, for golf in the state, and for Black Desert Resort, located in Ivins.

If you thought it was already hard to get tee times in southern Utah, just wait. The world will get a peek of Black Desert’s pristine and immaculate fairways and greens cut out of a beautiful lava field and word will spread about play all over the St. George area.

“Oh, this is big time,” said St. George director of golf Colby Cowan. 

“I mean, I think we’ll see big things happen around here because of it. I don’t think we fully understand the impact it’s going to have on our area and all golf courses. I mean, it’s going to elevate it to where people are going to be looking at St. George and Washington County as a true golf destination and getaway. 

“I think you can see some people saying, ‘Hey, let’s go to Bandon Dunes and the next year we’ve got to hit up St. George again.’ Everything is really gonna change the complexity of golf down here entirely. It’s a new set of eyes on all of our golf courses. I mean, it’s gonna help raise the tide a little bit. We’re all gonna benefit from it greatly and it’s going to make us work harder to make things better.”

In early May, I had the chance to play some of the holes at Black Desert. It was eye-popping, challenging, yet fair. The rough is minimal because of the wide fairways and the lava rock fields that line the entire layout. No question the layout can be set up to challenge the world’s best from the tips.

“We are thrilled to partner with Black Desert Resort in bringing PGA Tour golf to the state of Utah,” said PGA Tour executive vice president and president Tyler Dennis. “In introducing the PGA Tour — and the LPGA the following year — to a new market, we look forward to collaborating with the Black Desert Resort team in their vision for professional golf in the greater Zion community. Competitively, our members will enjoy the challenges and incredible views that define the Black Desert Golf Course.”

It is estimated the financial impact to the area will be more than $60 million. Black Desert Resort, when all phases are complete, is destined to be the largest resort in Utah — bigger than any ski resort. A hotel, shops, condos, spas, pools and the golf course will make it a destination stop for sure.

Covering the event as media or attending the event as a fan will be an interesting addition to the Utah sports scene.  

“Black Desert Resort has quickly made a huge impact on Utah golf history, already having announced an Epson Tour event, the Black Desert Resort Championship, this fall at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway and bringing an LPGA Tour championship to St. George in 2025,” remarked Randy Dodson, publisher of Fairways Magazine, the official publication of the Utah Golf Association.

“With today’s announcement of a PGA Tour event in the fall of 2024, Black Desert Resort has reestablished Utah’s significance in professional tour golf, all at a time when the game of golf in Utah has seen significant growth. Junior golfers and even casual golf fans will now have a chance to see the world’s best golfers in person. And by the way, the golf course itself is a must-play.”

The Senior PGA Tour, now the Champions Tour, used to conduct a stop in Park City at Jeremy Ranch and we’d see some of the legends of the game. Then we had the Champions Challenge at Thanksgiving Point, which featured a lot of father-son combinations of senior pros, including hall of famers Johnny Miller, Billy Casper, Jack Nicklaus and many others.

But this Black Rock Championship event is a long-overdue call from the PGA Tour itself. The last time we had a Tour event was the Utah Open back in 1963 at the Salt Lake Country Club when Tommy Jacobs earned the trophy.

The folks at Black Desert Resort should be extremely satisfied. Tour officials dropped in for a visit, toured the course, viewed the resort hotel plans, and bit. It’s a giant compliment to all involved.

It says a lot about Tom Weiskopf’s design, located in a beautiful setting in our red rock country. 

“We are honored to host the world’s most prestigious professional golf tours at Black Desert Resort,” said Black Desert’s managing partner Patrick Manning. “Bringing the best from the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour to Black Desert, then having the best experience imaginable, along with their fans, is priority No. 1.”

Utah tabbed to host first PGA Tour event since the 1960s

The PGA Tour will host a new event in Utah beginning in 2024. In an announcement on Friday, the tour said it is ending a six-decade hiatus from the Beehive State, as the Black Desert Championship is scheduled to launch in the fall of next year.

“We are thrilled to partner with Black Desert Resort in bringing PGA Tour golf to the state of Utah,” PGA Tour President Tyler Dennis stated in a news release Friday morning. “In introducing the PGA Tour to a new market, we look forward to collaborating with the Black Desert Resort team in their vision for professional golf in the Greater Zion community.”

The Black Desert Resort is located in ivins, Utah, about nine miles west of downtown St. George and about 40 miles from Zion National Park. The 650-acre resort is part of a $2 billion development currently under construction.

Additionally, the LPGA is expected to hold an event at the Black Desert Resort in 2025. Both tournaments are expected to be played on the resort’s new course, which opened in May and was designed by the late Tom Weiskopf in collaboration with architect Phil Smith.

The tour last visited Utah in 1963 with the Salt Lake Invitational at Salt Lake Country Club, where Tommy Jacobs was the winner.

Under the tour’s new restructured schedule the fall portion of the calendar will be used to determine status for this outside the FedEx Cup top 70.

The PGA Tour is headed to the Beehive State for the first time in more than 60 years.

The Tour and Black Desert Resort announced on Friday a new tournament, the Black Desert Championship, set to debut in 2024 during the FedExCup Fall. As part of a four-year agreement, the Black Desert Championship will mark the first PGA Tour event contested in Utah in more than six decades. A celebratory kickoff announcing the event was held in Greater Zion with Utah Governor Spencer Cox in attendance along with representatives from Black Desert Resort.

The Black Desert Championship will be part of the PGA Tour’s 2024 FedExCup Fall as a full-field event. Tournament dates will be announced at a later time. Black Desert will also host an LPGA Tour event in 2025.

Played against the backdrop of southern Utah’s red rock mountains, the par-72 Black Desert Golf Course was designed by Phil Smith and the late Tom Weiskopf, the final design from the World Golf Hall of Fame 2024 inductee.

The PGA Tour first appeared in Utah in 1930 when World Golf Hall of Fame member Harry “Lighthorse” Cooper won the Salt Lake Open. Seven years later, the Tour returned to Salt Lake City in 1937, when Al Zimmerman won the first of back-to-back Utah Open titles.

The historic Western Open, now known as the BMW Championship, made a stop in the Beehive State a decade later, when seven-time Tour winner Johnny Palmer captured the 1947 tournament in Salt Lake City.

In 1948, Utah hosted the Utah Open Invitational, where Lloyd Mangrum edged George Fazio in a playoff. The event was played three more times (1958, 1960, 1963), with the 1963 edition – won by Tommy Jacobs by a stroke over Don January – the last time the Tour played in the state.

While the PGA Tour returns to Utah for the first time since 1963, the Beehive State has been home to the Korn Ferry Tour’s Utah Championship presented by Zions Bank since the Tour’s inaugural season in 1990. Contested at Oakridge Country Club since 2017, past champions of the tournament include John Daly (1990), Zach Johnson (2003), Brendon Todd (2008) and Cameron Champ (2018).

The 2024 Black Desert Championship will be televised on Golf Channel, Peacock and PGA Tour Live on ESPN+.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is known for its unique team format and vibrant atmosphere, but golfers were in for a surprise when an alligator disrupted play on hole 17.

A timeout was called around noon on day one of the event as the alligator slowly crawled across the tee box, causing a temporary delay in the tournament.

Spectators and players watched with a mix of fascination and caution as the reptile made its way across the course. Security and course officials closely monitored the situation, allowing the alligator to pass through without incident.

Incidents like this are not entirely uncommon in Louisiana, where golf courses often intersect with natural habitats. However, they add an element of unpredictability to the game, reminding everyone that the region’s wildlife is never too far away.

After a brief pause, play resumed, and the tournament continued without further disruptions.

AVONDALE, La. — Former BYU teammates Patrick Fishburn and Zach Blair shot a 12-under 60 in better-ball play Saturday to take the third-round lead in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, the PGA Tour's only team event.

At 23-under 193, Fishburn and Blair had a one-stroke lead over Luke List and Henrik Norlander, with the Irish duo of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry — tied for the lead after each of the first two rounds — two strokes back.

Fishburn and Blair, both winless on the PGA Tour, have been playing golf together since their junior high school days in Ogden, Utah.

"It's kind of why you're out here playing is to have opportunities like this," Blair said. "I've been out here a handful of years now, so I know that they don't come that often, and so we'll do our best to go take advantage of it."

Fishburn had three birdies and an eagle on the first five holes at wind-swept TPC Louisiana, where the wind gusted to 25 mph. Windy conditions are also expected for Sunday for the alternate-shot finale.

List and Norlander had a 62. List eagled the second and 11th holes.

"We just got in a really good rhythm early," Norlander said. "I felt like we were both hitting fairways. Not necessarily hitting it really close, but it felt like early we had two chances on every hole."

McIlroy and Lowry shook off a slow start to birdie seven of their last 12 holes. They shot 64 to join Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard, who also had a 64, at 21 under. Canadians Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin topped the group at 20 under.

"Look, it was a tough day," McIlroy said. "Birdies were a little harder to come by today than they were on Thursday in the better-ball format. I think today was about staying patient knowing that the course was going to present some opportunities, especially on that back nine."

Fishburn and Blair were a stroke off the tournament record.

"Just kind of rode Fish all day," Blair said. "He played good. I mean, it was pretty textbook out there for him."

They made the turn in 7-under 29 and birdied five of the first six holes on the back nine before finishing with three pars.

"It's pretty easy to hit shots when Zac is always in the fairway, always on the green," Fishburn said. "We ham-and-egged it really good today."

Zac Blair, Patrick Fishburn turn decades-long relationship into lead at Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Patrick Fishburn and Zac Blair have known each other since they were youngsters in Utah and they both said, with smiles, that not a whole lot has changed.

Through 54 holes at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, they're in a prime position for a big thing to change come Sunday night -- they could become PGA TOUR winners.

Fishburn and Blair fired a 12-under 60 at TPC Louisiana in the third round to take a one-shot lead into the final round.

They opened with a 7-under 29 in their first nine holes, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 second. They added back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 and 11, and then three straight on Nos. 13-15.

The duo had a great chance to tie -- or break -- the Four-ball scoring record held by Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele (59, shot in 2022) but made pars on their final three holes.

But it's hard to be disappointed with a 60, they said.

"I think we would have signed up for a 60 at the start of the day," Blair said. "We hit some good shots, hit some good putts, and we had a good day."

Patrick Fishburn sinks long birdie putt at Zurich Classic

Blair returned to action on the PGA TOUR last season after a serious shoulder injury caused him to miss nearly two years of action. He regained PGA TOUR status via fulfilling a major medical extension. And it's not like he hasn't been busy, though -- The Tree Farm, the course Blair is the visionary of just outside Aiken, South Carolina, is now open.

Fishburn is a rookie on TOUR this season and has made just two cuts so far in 2024.

"It's kind of why you're out here playing is to have opportunities like this," Blair said. "I've been out here a handful of years now, so I know that they don't come that often, and so we'll do our best to go take advantage of it."

Blair, 33, and Fishburn, 31, have been long-time pals and were quick to heap praise on each other and their games.

"It's pretty easy to hit shots when Zac is always in the fairway, always on the green. He's always available," Fishburn said. "That's kind of been our key word for the week. It's pretty easy for me to swing free knowing that Zac is always going to be there.

"Zac still hasn't missed a fairway since he was a kid. He hasn't broke a tee, hasn't missed a fairway. He's gotten up-and-down every single time ... things haven't changed."

Added Blair: "Just kind of rode (Fishburn) all day. He played good. Started off super hot."

Fishburn said it was "pretty special" to have the opportunity to play alongside his friend on the PGA TOUR after finally earning his TOUR card for the first time via the Korn Ferry Tour last season.

And now the good friends have a good chance to leap into the winner's circle on the PGA TOUR -- together.

"I think it's kind of one of those weeks where you're maybe able to stay a little bit looser, especially having a friend as your partner," Blair said. "I think that's kind of really what we've tried to do is just not take it too seriously. We know tomorrow will be a big day, but it's a really cool opportunity for both of us."
