While Scarborough may not get nearly as much attention as other Toronto neighborhoods, it definitely shouldn’t be overlooked. Whether you’re visiting Toronto and curious about the area, or a local who hasn’t spent much time there, here are some of the best things to do in Scarborough. 

Visit the Toronto Zoo

One of the best things to do in Scarborough is spending some time at Canada’s premier zoo and one of the largest zoos in the world. Here you’ll find over 5,000 animals representing over 450 species. Animals are divided into seven zoogeographic regions: Indo-Malaya, Africa, the Americas, Australasia, Eurasia, Canadian Domain and the Tundra Trek, featuring a five-acre polar bear habitat and underwater viewing area. There are also over 10 kilometers (six miles) of walking trails at the zoo to explore as you check out the animals.

In the summer months for kids and families, there’s also the option of cooling off at Splash Island, a two-acre splash pad, perfect for relief on hot days. To learn more about the animals at the zoo, there are daily animal keeper talks and feedings where you can see the animals up-close and find out some interesting animal facts. The Toronto Zoo is open year-round.

Rouge National Urban Park is open year-round, accessible by public transit, and the largest urban park in North America. Once you’re here, there’s a wide variety of things to see and do, depending on your interests. There’s a beach here (mentioned below), as well as numerous hiking trails suited to hikers of every level. If you like birds, Rouge National Urban Park is a great place to go bird watching thanks to the 225 bird species that have been observed in the area. The mouth of the Rouge River and the surrounding marsh area are also popular fishing spots if you want to try and get a bite or two. And for anyone who likes camping, this is the only place to pitch a tent and sleep under the stars right in the city making it a great option if you don't want to (or don't have time to) go further to pitch your tent.

Hit the Beach

Toronto is home to several great beaches and there are a couple of beaches to check out in Scarborough when the weather is warm enough. Bluffers Beach, located at the southern end of Brimley Road, is known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Toronto and named for the Scarborough Bluffs that tower over it. There are walking trails to explore here, as well as an outdoor shower and picnic areas if you want to pack a lunch.

Or, head to Rouge Park Beach in Rouge National Urban Park, where you can swim in Lake Ontario from the wide, sandy shore. If you’re looking for another water-based activity in Scarborough for the whole family in addition to hitting the beaches in the area, it’s worth paying a visit to Kidstown Water Park . This is the only water park operated by the City of Toronto and offers a fun range of water features, including a tipping bucket, spray rings, squirting aquatic animals, a slide, wading pool, splash pad and more. There are also picnic areas here for anyone wanting to make a while afternoon of a visit. Kidstown opens from mid June until the Sunday of Labour day weekend.

Locals know where to go but there isn’t great coverage on the top things to do in Scarborough, Ontario so here is a list the best that this neighbourhood has to offer.

Scarborough doesn’t always get the attention it deserves and as someone that grew up here, I know that there are plenty of hidden gems that most non-locals never get a chance to visit. You just need to know where to look for these top things to do in Scarborough.

The dramatic limestone cliffs that follow the shores of Lake Ontario is the reason why this neighbourhood is called Scarborough to begin with.

Elizabeth Simcoe, wife of the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe, named this town for a British town with the same name that also features white-faced rock cliffs.

The entirety of the Scarborough Bluffs spans 15km and features 11 parks. That said, when someone says “Scarborough Bluffs”, they’re most likely referring to Bluffer’s Park .

Featured in one of the best parks in Scarborough , Bluffer’s Park is the most iconic part of the escarpment and has the most visible and dominant part of the exposed rock face. The best view of it is from Lookout Point in the park.

To make things even better, right below the cliffs is a small sandy beach that many locals come to cool off.

This small beach isn’t to be confused with the giant stretch of beach on the other end of the park. While Toronto’s Woodbine beach often gets a lot of buzz as the one and only beach in the city, I’d argue that Bluffer’s Beach is equally as good, if not better.

There is a massive stretch of sand that comes considerably in-land which is why you’ll also find a large set of volleyball nets as well. Bluffer’s Beach is also a Blue Flag Beach which means it meets strict water quality and safety criteria.

I couldn’t really say whether the Lobster Mountain or Lobster Tower was invented here but I’m going to say it is. Originally located closer to Pacific Mall, this new location is home to a lobster lover’s paradise.

Best Scarborough Patios

Not to get lost in the Bluffer’s Park is the marina itself. It’s easy to forget that there’s easy access to Lake Ontario from Scarborough.

While most of us don’t have boats or membership to the Cathedral Bluffs Yacht Club , this spot is great for a number of reasons.

• Parking – The other lots fill up quickly but there’s a $15 flat rate lot for the marina that most people don’t know about.
• Great viewpoints and picnic areas – Most people either go to the Bluffer’s Park side of Beach side but in the middle stays significantly quieter and calmer, making it a great place to enjoy the view, hang out by the rocky shore, or set up a picnic.
• Bluffer’s Restaurant – The restaurant that’s part of the marina is the best part of all. They have an awesome patio space overlooking the marina and lake and is excellent for brunch and sunsets. Bonus: If you spend $25 or more, they’ll validate your parking so its free!

Bluffer’s Restaurant is one of the top patios in Scarborough and has a killer view.

When coming to visit here, it seems like such an eclectic and unusual collection of monuments, statues, and sculptures but when you learn more about its history, you’ll realize there’s a fascinating story to what has turned this space into one of the most beautiful parks and gardens in Scarborough.

Originally known as Guildwood Park, the space is adjoined with Guild Inn Estate , originally the home of Colonel Harold C. Bickford and built in 1914.

This was later transformed into a meeting place and forum for artists when it was purchased by Rosa Breithaupt Hwewtson (later married to Spencer Clark) in 1932 where she was almost obsessed with purchasing architectural fragments from important demolished buildings in the city that ranged from banks to the Royal Conservatory of Music.

In 1978, this was sold to the Toronto and Region conservation Authority where over the years they’ve turned this into a marvel of a park mixed with historic art sculptures, important facades, and modern art.

Coming to Guild Park and Gardens is almost like a walk through Toronto’s past in the open-air that’s so unusual that it’s incredibly wonderful.

The Toronto Zoo is an institution and is a must-visit attraction.

Divided into 7 zoological zones and covering 287 hectares, a lot of care is taken to not only show wildlife in as close to their natural habitat but also educate visitors in conservation and also fight extinction.

Come here to see a wide range of animals including their largest, ‘Samson’, a male river hippopotamus and smallest, a worker Leaf-cutter ant. Other popular animals include exhibits featuring polar bears, giraffes, and penguins.

One of my favourites is the Gorilla Rainforest which is the world’s largest indoor habitat for western lowland gorillas.

What makes the Toronto Zoo so amazing are also their special programs such as their one-of-a-kind wild encounters , canopy tour, Serengeti Bush Camp, Pyjama Overnight Party, Gorilla Climb Ropes Course, TundraAir Ride, and plenty more programs for kids.

This massive and biodiverse ecosystem lays claim as the nation’s first National Urban Park . Spanning a large part of Scarborough, it includes some of the last working farms in the GTA, Toronto’s only campground, one of the largest region of marshes, a beach, an important Carolinian forest, examples of human history from 10,000 years ago, and some of the oldest Indigenous sites in Canada.

That’s a lot of things packed into one protected area but that’s what awaits visitors is awesome hiking, glamping opportunities with oTENTik , bird watching, fishing, and water sports.

Being quite a large park, there are a number of different entry points into Rouge National Urban Park . In Scarborough, the easiest access points are right by the Toronto Zoo and also the Rouge Beach. There are also lesser-known areas such as the Finch Meander Area and Woodland and Twyn Rivers Day Use Area .

The truth is, as a newly established park (May 15, 2015), Parks Canada still has some work in establishing this as park to live up to its stature so if the parking, trail signage, facilities seem a little lacking, know that it’s still a work in progress.

Thomson Memorial Park is a 41.8 hectare park which makes it easily one of the largest parks in the neighbourhood if you don’t include the National Urban Park. Located just south of Scarborough Town Centre, this park is packed with features including a large wooded ravine, sports fields, tennis courts, dog park, sheltered picnic areas, outdoor fitness equipment, water park, children’s playground, and historic museum.

Generations ago, Scarborough was a simple settlement with vast farmland and log homes. The Scarborough Museum is embedded in the expansive Thomson Memorial Park and consists of 3 heritage buildings which include the Cornell House, McCowan Log House, and Hough Carriage Works. They often have special youth programs and on special occasions will also open up for educational visits.

For dog owners, their dog park is also one of the best in the Scarborough with a mix of fenced and small dog off-leash areas . Commercial dog walkers are allowed here and there’s also a special section for dogs that prefer a quieter setting.

For our final selection of top things to do in Scarborough, Ontario, we have the gorgeous Rosetta McClain Gardens . This is a picturesque and perfectly manicured garden filled with blooming flowers, vivid roses, flapping butterflies, and birds perched in curiosity.

Come to these gardens for a calming walk along the curved pergola that follows the bubbling rock fountain, take a break in the gazebo, and catch a glimpse of the glistening Lake Ontario.

This spot is popular for wedding photography and is also part of the chain of Scarborough Bluffs parks .

For those in Toronto, this is similar in scale to the Toronto Music Garden but smaller than Edwards Gardens in North York.

No, unfortunately dogs aren’t allowed except for service animals.

The bluffs are incredibly unstable and have recently collapsed in certain areas due to erosion. As a result, please stay behind fences and obey trespassing signs. Areas that are easily crossed are also watched closely by police so I would not recommend that you attempt it.

There are no entry fees for any of the Scarborough parks including the Rouge National Urban Park. The Toronto Zoo being a private park does have an admission fee.

Summer-time is the best time to come with the long summer days and hot weather to accompany the cool waters and beaches. Trails and parks also offer comfortable shade. Fall is also a great time to visit as the changing of the leaves is visible everywhere you go including along the Scarborough Bluffs.

Scarborough has been trying to shed the “Scarlem” and “Scarberia” image for decades as the impression of the neighbourhood being unsafe is simply not true. All of the highlights recommended here are completely safe.

The Lobster Mountain is quite enormous and easily good enough for 7 people although it recommends a minimum of 4-5 people. Reservations are also highly recommended.

While not mandatory, reservations are definitely recommended on weekends.

5 Beautiful Spots to Visit in Scarborough and the Best Food to Eat Nearby!

Even though the last day of Summer has already come and gone there is still plenty of time left to enjoy the beautiful outdoor spaces we have in this city. Scarborough is home to some of the best natural scenery, trails and waterfront in Toronto and this is a great time of the year to take it all in before it's covered in snow.

Now this wouldn't be a proper Local Vibe post without a food angle so I'm going to combine the beauty of both the natural landscapes and the best surrounding food options in this edition.

The Scarborough Bluffs always get the most attention but it is far from the only natural attraction in the area. Scarborough boasts the most scenic shoreline in the city with the Bluffs being just one part of that. Lets take a look at five of the best and most picturesque places to visit and then where to find some incredible food nearby.

Rouge Beach Park

195 Rouge Hills Dr, Scarborough, ON

The marsh and wetlands area at the mouth of the Rouge River are the highlights of this park and walking the boardwalk is a great way to take in the scenery and wildlife in the area. Past the marsh is also a swimmable beach and a walking/cycling trail that continues West for a few kilometres and eventually joins the Highland Creek trail system. It's a great place to go for a ride or walk, take in the sunset or even fish in the marsh!

Port Union Bakery

61 Undercliff Dr, Scarborough, ON

You'll find all of the bakery staples like fresh bread, buns and plenty of sweets at the Port Union Bakery but the star items are their Filipino Empanadas and Asado (pork buns). The empanadas come in chicken or pork varieties, plus a dessert version filled with pineapple. My personal favourite, the Asado, is a pocket of slightly sweet minced pork baked into a dinner roll (pictured above). At a cost of only $1 to $1.50 each these are some of the best bang for your buck snacks around.

Simply Frosted Cupcakery

5550 Lawrence Ave E #5 , Scarborough, ON

This "Cupcakery" tucked in the corner unit of a plaza at Port Union and Lawrence is the perfect place to treat yourself after spending some time hiking along the waterfront. They feature a large selection of cupcake flavours for walk-in customers and an even larger selection for orders. A Dulche de Leche cupcake from Simply Frosted goes great with a cappuccino from Mr. Beans Coffee just a few doors down.

The Guild Inn Estates

201 Guildwood Pkwy, Scarborough, ON

This is the perfect spot to both take in some natural scenery and Toronto history. This historic property dates back to 1914 and has changed hands and purposes many times over the years including stints as a seminary, an artists colony and a PTSD hospital following World War 2.

Long time owners Rosa & Herbert Clark began collecting pieces of historic Toronto buildings as they were being torn down to make way for new development in the 30's. Now the Inn's grounds feature numerous pieces of Toronto's architectural history as well as many other sculptures and art pieces surrounded by gardens, woodlands and views of Lake Ontario.

The Suya Spot

269 Morningside Ave, Scarborough, ON

Not too far from the Guild Inn is the perfect spot to get your fix for some West African flavours. Suya is a preparation of grilled meat cooked on a skewer that's popular throughout the region. It's flavours comes from ground peanut, hot peppers and various other spices.

Suya Spot serves up your choice of Suya meats along with Jollof rice and fried plantain. Jollof is a rice dish stewed with tomatoes, onion, garlic, chilies and spices. It's the perfect accompaniment to go with the spicy Suya and the sweet plantain. Pictured above is the Chicken and Goat Suya combo.

They also add some of their house made pepper sauce on the side. BEWARE! This hot sauce is no joke! I think of myself as someone with a pretty high spice tolerance and this stuff is way to high on the heat meter even for me to handle.

Another option to try here is the Waakye, a dish of rice and black eyed peas, served with goat stew, a boiled egg and noodles.

Little Bavaria

Also in the area you'll find this old school stop for German comfort food. If you are in the mood for Beer and Schnitzel this has been the place to go in Scarborough since 1965. Aside from a variety of schnitzels, there is also German sausage, smoked pork chops and goulash on offer. You can't go wrong washing any of these down with an extra large 1 litre stein of German beer like Erdinger Weiss or Radeberger.

Rosetta McClain Gardens

5 Glen Everest Rd, Scarborough, ON

Named after one of the original owners of the land that the park sits on, Rosetta McClain Garden features winding pathways, elevated views of the lake and a manicured circular garden surrounding a large boulder fountain. It's always a peaceful oasis in the city. As an added bonus for those exploring the area, just east of the park entrance there is a steep old utility road that leads down to a lake side trail.

The original Kingston Road location of this small chain has been a Scarborough go-to for authentic Thai street food for years. Named after a gigantic weekend market in Bangkok, Jatujak does great versions of classics like Pad Thai and Khao Soi. Their Lemongrass chicken wings always impress as well.

The Birchcliff

The Birchcliff is the perfect stop to get your caffeine fix during any expedition in Scarborough. Their baked goods are too good to pass up while you're there, especially their butter tarts that are provided by the butter tart queens from Maple Key Tart Co. (pictured above)

The Scarborough Bluffs

Bluffers Park - The southern end of Brimley Road, Scarborough, ON

Scarborough Crescent Park - 61 Undercliff Dr, Scarborough, ON

Cathedral Bluffs Park - 24 Lyme Regis Crescent, Scarborough, ON

These lakeside cliffs are Scarborough's most famous landmark and also the origin of its name. Elizabeth Simcoe, wife of the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada, dubbed the area Scarborough as the cliffs reminded her of her North Yorkshire, England hometown of the same name. This ancient shoreline of a glacial lake dating back to the last ice age now provides families and outdoor enthusiasts with plenty of places to hike, swim and picnic while enjoying the incredible views.

Enjoy the beach, boating and trails of Bluffers park at lake level or take in the views from almost 25 stories up at Scarborough Crescent or Cathedral Bluffs Parks.

This gem on Kingston Road specializes in Lomi Batangas, a popular egg noodle dish from the Philippines. These noodles are swimming in a thickened broth that comes stacked with toppings. Even the small, or snack sized (pictured above), is a generous portion. The bowl comes overflowing with shrimp spring rolls, chicharron (crispy pork skin) and fish balls.

It also comes with a small side bowl with a lemon wedge and a chili pepper. The idea is to make your own sauce to enjoy with your Lomi by mixing some fresh lemon and soy sauce and then crushing the chili to give it some heat. The traditional way to enjoy it is to mix small spoonfuls of your sauce with spoonfuls of soup as you eat.

This warm, thick soup seems like a great pick-me-up as the days start getting colder. It would be the perfect finish to a walk along the Bluffs on a brisk fall day.

This make shift BBQ spot that has taken over a tiny parking lot on Kingston Road may not be here for long as the pitmaster is searching for a more permanent location heading into the Winter months.

While he is still around, this is the ideal spot to pick up some smoked ribs, pork butt or chicken before or after a trip to the Bluffs. Prices are fair and portions are very generous. Feel like some wings after spending a day exploring the Bluffs? You're in luck as there are two great options that both offer weekly wing specials.

Tara Inn (Mondays 2 for 1 wings)

This neighbourhood favourite has been serving big juicy wings in Scarborough for over 30 years.

Victorian Monkey (Tuesdays wings & fries special)

2386 Kingston Rd, Scarborough, ON

This wildly decorated tavern also serves up some great wings and offers Jenga and trivial pursuit cards as well a full size shuffle board table to pass the time while waiting for your wings.

R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant

2701 Queen St E, Scarborough, ON

Sitting in the very Southwest corner of Scarborough this almost 80 year old water treatment facility still provides a large portion of the water supply for the city and looks great doing it!

This heritage building has won numerous awards for its art deco design and has been used in a number of film and television productions. It often portrays a prison or an asylum and has done so in productions such as Half Baked, Strange Brew and Robocop: The Series among others.

Aside from the beautiful architecture, the rolling green hills and lake views make this a great spot to soak up some sun in the Summer.

While these are very definitely two completely separate restaurants I've chosen to lump them together here because they might be the best two restaurant combo in the city to share a roof.

Kyouka's excellent chicken based ramen keeps the seats filled along with starters and sides like Karaage Chicken Wings and Donburi. It's a great place to get your East End ramen fix and get a quick, high quality meal.

Xola serves up traditional Mexican classics right next door. Some of the stand outs on their menu include the duck confit taco, a bright pink beet ceviche and their grilled octopus (pulpa asado). Another highlight are the grasshoppers, a not so common ingredient in Toronto, that are featured on several menu items to add some crunch. Xola also features a solid line up of Tequila, Mezcal and Mexican beers.

This brand new restaurant just north of the RC Harris plant specializes in making fresh batches of wood fire baked Somun bread throughout the day. This Bosnian bread is something like a pita but with a crustier exterior to balance out it's soft pillowy interior.

Their menu offers a number of sandwiches combining their fresh Somun with Ćevapi, a tiny kebab like sausage made with minced beef, veal and lamb. The Loaded Cevapčići (pictured above) adds onion, pickle, hot peppers, kajmak (a creamy cheese) and ajvar (a roasted red pepper sauce) to the mix with incredible results.

If you want to keep things simple you can also just enjoy your somun with the kajmak cheese and some plum spread or just take some plain somun home to enjoy later.

Hopefully you'll find some time to explore some of these places this fall, and get a good meal in the process.

Places to visit in Scarborough

Visit Scarborough and its two sweeping sandy beaches, rugged castle ruins, and museums for rain days. There’s plenty to do in Scarborough. Take a boat trip off shore to meet lazy seal colonies, surf in the North Sea or chug through the North York Moors on a traditional steam train. Follow dinosaur footprints on North and South Bays, then see the real things fossilised in the geology museum. The fair in the folk song made famous by Simon and Garfunkel may no longer exist but there’s still a traditional market hall packed with produce and regular craft fairs.

Best things to do in Scarborough

1.  The Scarborough Fair Collection

What is it? You won’t find any parsley and sage at this working steam museum, or rosemary and thyme for that matter. Instead, it houses an eye-poppingly colourful collection of kitsch vintage seaside fairground rides, steam engines, vintage cars and mechanical ballroom organs.

Why go? For a great British seaside nostalgia trip. Take a whirl on the traditional merry-go-round that looks ripped from a scene in 'Mary Poppins', ride the dodgems, try your luck in the penny arcade and ogle at the old-school cars and buses, some of which date back to the 1920s. Don’t miss out on afternoon tea in the ballroom to the sounds of a Wurlitzer organ for the cherry on top of this wonderfully twee cake.

2.  Scarborough Castle

What is it? Get up close to 3000 years of Yorkshire history, featuring royals, Romans, plenty of battles and a rare Bronze Age sword. Long before Scarborough became famous as a seasideing resort, it was home to one of the country’s most significant royal fortresses, whose medieval ruins now loom down from the coastal headland.

Why go? As well as the remains of a 12th century fortification developed by Henry II and King John, you’ll find Iron Age settlements, a Roman signal station, a medieval chapel and stunning views of the town’s north and south bays on this cliff top fortress. Look in the Master Gunner’s House, which is full of fascinating prehistoric artifacts.

3.  Scarborough Beach

What is it? Scarborough doesn’t boast just one beautiful stretch of sand. This town has two to lie out on. The North and South Bay are separated by the craggy castle ruins. Whether you choose to spend a day on the buzzy South sands or chill out on the quieter North coast, this is the perfect spot to feel the sea breeze through your locks.

Why go? You’ll find all the amusements you could ask of a former Victorian pleasure beach on the South Bay. Take a donkey ride down the sands, hit up the amusement arcades, stroll down the promenade and watch the pleasure boats coming in and out of the harbour. Head to the wilder, rockier North Bay to beat the crowds, explore rock pools and take some snaps of the colourful beach huts. Arrive on the stands in style in the Cliff Lift, the oldest funicular railway in the country.

4.  Rotunda Museum

What is it? It may be small, but over two floors this beautiful museum (one of the first to be purpose-built in the world in 1829) packs in over 65 million years of history and a stunning circular gallery with a beautiful domed-roof dotted with stained glass.

Why go? This gorgeous space is packed full of amazing natural history. Check out the Speeton Plesiosaur skeleton - a marine reptile from the lower Cretaceous period, dinosaur footprints found on East Yorkshire’s dino coast and the gnarly skeleton of the bronze-age Gristhorpe man.

5.  Scarborough Market Hall and Vaults

What is it? An airy continental-style market hall full of traditional stalls, independent eateries and quirky shops selling everything from art supplies and antiques to prints and vintage clothing. After a £2.3 million development this fabulous spot has been given a slick overhaul with a new mezzanine-level food court. Venture down into the Vaults, where you’ll find a rabbit-warren of eclectic indie shops and bric-a-brac stalls.

Why go? Pick up weird and wonderful curios in the Vault’s Authentique antique shop, get your mitts on beautiful handmade glassware in Gekoglass, stock up on jars of locally-sourced raw honey at The Honeycomb Shop, stop for a flat white at the Scarborough Coffee Company and keep an eye on their programme of events and live music. Phew!

6.  St Mary’s Church and Anne Bronte’s Grave

What is it? This picturesque church has seen some sights. Originally built in the 12th century just below Scarborough Castle, it was nearly destroyed during a siege in the English Civil War, but thankfully was rebuilt in the 1600s.

Why go? There’s a steep climb to the church’s hilly spot overlooking the old town, but it’s worth it for a snoop around the picturesque interior filled with beautiful stained glass. Get an eyeful of some fantastic sea views from the church yard and see if you can find the grave of Anne Bronte, the youngest of the famous literary clan. The Bronte sisters are practically royalty around these parts, so don’t miss the chance to pay your respects to the only one of the three sisters buried outside of their hometown of Howarth.

7.  Scarborough Spa

What is it? Originally built around the source of Scarborough’s spa waters, this beachside concert space is a stunning Victorian gem. Its elegant outdoor promenade, designed by the same architect as Chatsworth House, look out over the beach and host all kinds of concerts, including shows by The Spa Orchestra.

Why go? Seeing The Spa Orchestra play in this magical alfresco space is real treat. At 106 years old, they are the last surviving professional seaside orchestra. Their repertoire of classical ditties, Viennese waltzes, operettas, and popular Victorian songs, is totally unique as well as being set to the lulling accompaniment of breaking waves.

8.  Scarborough Brewery

What is it? Nestled in an industrial estate on the outskirts of town, this small, family-owned brewery may be off the beaten track but is well worth seeking out when they open their doors for special events among the kegs. Since opening in 2009, they’ve expanded from a one barrel brew pub to a 10 barrel plant, creating lip-smacking pale and golden ales, IPAs and rich porters.

Why go? Piss ups in breweries don’t get much better than this. Head to one of the regular beer festivals to guzzle down tasty pints, including their Citrusy golden ale Sealord and refreshingly fruity pale session beer Trident, while listening to live music on the brewery floor. Look out for brewery tours to really get to know the place.

9.  Scarborough Art Gallery

What is it? You can’t miss this beautiful Grade-II listed Italiante villa nestled on The Crescent - one of Scarborough’s grandest streets. As well as housing the town’s permanent collection of fine art, the stunning gallery also hosts regular temporary exhibitions championing everyone from local painters to internally-acclaimed artists.  

Why go? Check out Leeds artist John Atkinson Grimshaw’s beautiful seascapes, works by Frederic Lord Leighton and Frank Brangwyn and the gallery’s brilliant contemporary print works from the Printmakers Council’s permanent archive. Look out for super-informative temporary exhibitions, which have ranged from explorations of Scarborough’s Victorian pleasure beach past to displays on women in WWII.

10.  Stephen Joseph Theatre

What is it? One of the nation’s best theatres housed in a glorious, sweeping Art-Deco former Odeon cinema building. This theatre-in-the-round, founded by Stephen Joseph in 1957 (albeit in a different building), has one mighty heritage and is a champion for new work.

Why go? This intimate space will forever be tied to Alan Ayckbourn, one of Britain’s most-loved playwrights who began working for Joseph in 1957  and was artistic director here from 1972 to 2009. Bask in the glory of this lovely little place’s history and revel in its cutting-edge programme filled with fresh writing and steeped in local pride.

11.  Harbour Bar

What is it? This family run ice cream parlour has been making and selling its own ice cream since 1945, and things have changed very little since then. Inside you’ll find a wonderfully retro interior with mustard-yellow formica tables and cherry-red leather stools, cone-shaped neon signs and ‘50s Horlicks adverts.

Why go? Owner Giulian Alonzi, who was born and raised in the flat above the shop, churns 500 litres of ice cream an hour, and its some of the tastiest in Yorkshire. Tuck into a rippling, pastel-coloured ‘99 and a huge, cream-filled, wafer-topped Knickerbocker Glory. Orin winter, opt for a warming hot chocolate and one of their mean bacon sarnies.

12.  Peasholm Park

What is it? Recently restored to its original Edwardian splendour, this pretty park was modelled on the Willow Pattern plate design with a handsome pegoda, ornate bridge and Chinese-style island bandstand.

Why go? Full of streams and gurgling waterfalls, this is a charming oasis away from the bustle of the seaside. Glide along the calm lakes on dragon-shaped pedalos, take a ride on the miniature railway and look out for the famous miniature naval sea battles acted out in the lake in over the summer.

13.  Alpamare Scarborough

What is it? Scarborough’s thermal waters have been given an adrenaline-inducing update at this state-of-the-art, Alpine-themed waterpark. It packs in a wave pool, which ripples with metre-high swells, an infinity pool with massage jets and four long, curly water slides.

Why go? Prices are on the dearer side, but worth it for the hours of fun you can pack in here. Whizz down the Black Hole, the longest waterslides in the UK plunging thrill-seekers down an 11m drop at 30mph, take a soak in the heated outdoor pool with gorgeous views stretching across the beach and visit the Alpine-style wellness centre for saunas, steam baths and treatments.

Scarborough North Yorkshire was one of my favourite places on the coast and a great British seaside resort . It has all the traditional seaside attractions and activities from donkey rides to the penny arcade and some phenomenal seafood.

Yes there is a Scarborough in Canada ( Toronto to be exact) there’s also one in Maine but the best one is Scarborough England.

Where is Scarborough in Yorkshire?

Scarborough is located on the North Yorkshire Coast and you can get there easily from London.  You can take a train from Kings Cross to Scarborough which will take around 4 hours. If you’re driving, Scarborough is around a 90-minute drive from York city, or 45 minutes from  Whitby , home of Whitby Abbey where Bram Stoker’s Dracula was created.

Scarborough was originally a Roman signal station in 370 AD, and then in the 10th century, it became a Viking settlement. By the 12th century, a Norman Castle was built on the headland. 

Scarborough was virtually destroyed in 1066 when the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada invaded England. Around 1136 a castle was built there. The keep of Scarborough castle (which still stands) was built in 1158. Soon a little town grew around the castle.

By the 13th century, Scarborough was a busy market town and port and in 1253 the townspeople were granted the right to hold an annual fair. The song Scarborough Fair (popularized in modern times by Simon & Garfunkel) is thought to have originated with the development of the Scarborough Market

By the 17th century, Scarborough had developed into a spa town where the rich came to take the waters. A woman called Mrs Farrer had discovered a spring at the bottom of the Cliffs which contained deposits of iron and soon folks from all over England were coming to Scarborough to partake of the healing waters and have a dip in the sea. In the late 18th century bathing in seawater became fashionable. Doctors claimed it was good for the health and many wealthy people went on trips to the seaside.

Scarborough is simply one of the best seaside holidays in England. It has two beaches to choose from, a ruined castle, amusement arcades, great seafood and a great seaside vibe.

Dominating the headland – Scarborough Castle is one of the first things you notice when arriving in the town. The massive tower was built between the years 1150 and 1169 by King Henry.

The first occupants of the headland were the Romans who built a signal station here. When the Vikings arrived on British soil the headland was the first area they took when they arrived.

By the middle ages the castle was owned by King Henry III and it became the greatest fortress in England. By 1484 King Richard III stayed at the Castle while assembling an army to resist the invasion of the Tudor Henry VII. 

You can walk the castle walls for free instead of paying admission to the Castle itself. There are incredible views over the town and the North Sea. It is a steep but short hike uphill so wear some good hiking boots.

If you are up visiting the Castle stop by St. Mary’s Church where one of England’s greatest writers Anne Bronte is buried. Anne Bronte died in Scarborough on 28th May 1849 aged 29 yrs.

She was born in North Yorkshire and is buried in St Mary’s Church graveyard in Scarborough. Anne loved Scarborough and used it as a setting for her novels – Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall; she often remarked that she wanted to open a school in Scarborough.

The Millenium stone in the graveyard was erected to celebrate Scarborough’s Viking heritage and festival in 2000.

South Bay in Scarborough was the original settlement of the area and today forms the old town. This is the main tourist area with lovely beaches tons of penny arcades and children’s amusement. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to have a meal of some great fish and chips and lots to entertain families. Unlike Blackpool, the promenade has undergone major improvements and is very pedestrian-friendly.

Lots to see on a walk around the harbour on the gorgeous Scarborough seafront, watch the ships come and go, browse all the tacky souvenir shops and take a walk on any one of three piers. Avoid the seagulls aiming for your takeaway chips or just sit and people watch.

Tons of places for you and the kids to lose a penny and spend some time enjoying the entertainments and penny arcades on your harbour walk.

Scarborough has its very own pirate ship called the Hispaniola that you can book a ride on around the south bay Scarborough beach. You will find all of the boat tour booking kiosks on Foreshore Road near the West Pier in Scarborough.

The Scarborough Spa is complex is housed in the historic Grade II listed building in South Bay that in the past housed the Spa. These days it is a concert and exhibition venue where you can enjoy some first-class entertainment or even host your wedding. You can also have a beverage or a lovely lunch on the newly refurbished Sun Terrace.

The Spa has a Grand Hall, which seats 1,500 and hosts live entertainment including the Scarborough Spa Orchestra and the annual Scarborough Jazz Festival. The Spa Theatre, a 557-seat Victorian theatre, is home to summer season shows and Christmas pantomimes . The Spa Ocean Room is used for dances, conferences and other events, including the Scarborough Jazz Festival and Coastival.

The Victorian Cliff Tramway is a funicular railway that links the Spa complex with South Cliff, 200 ft above the South Bay. This is the oldest surviving Tramway Company in the UK.  The fabulous burgundy and cream carriages travel up and down the 248-foot (76 m) track between the bottom station on Foreshore Road, next to the beach and tourist arcades, and the top station on Marine Parade, close to the town centre.

If you have ridden the Tramway up to the Spa Complex take some time to explore the Gardens which stretch from Spa Bridge to Holbeck. The gardens include Spa Gardens, Prince of Wales Gardens, the Rose Garden, Holbeck Gardens, Shuttleworth Gardens and the Italian Gardens. These stunning gardens along the terraced walks are a green-fingered paradise.

North Bay is a more peaceful area of Scarborough less touristy and rather more natural than South Bay.

You can’t miss the gorgeous colourful beach huts lining the bay and you can rent them on a daily, weekly or seasonal basis. 

North Bay is where you will find Peasholm Park  which strangely enough is a Japanese theme park. The park includes a boating lake and putting green a fabulous bandstand where open-air concerts take place and beautiful gardens and trails to walk.

A fantastic way to see the North Yorkshire coastline the miniature railway was built in 1931 and runs for ¾ of a mile from Peasholm Park to Scalby Mills in North Bay. 

You will find that surfing is huge in Scarborough and there are several surfing schools in North Bay where you can take lessons. You can also learn to Stand up paddleboarding as well. 

One of my favourite activities as a kid was investigating rock pools and North Bay beach has rocky outcrops that are simply perfect for rock pooling when the tide is out.

I have to say I’m not much of a fan of these types of centres but if you have kids or are obsessed with sealife this might be the place for you. There are Rainforest Adventures where you can enjoy all those creepy bugs and lizards.  

In the underwater world, you can attempt to find more than 2500 creatures within the waters at this unique indoor and outdoor attraction.

For penguin fans, you can check out the colony of the hilarious Humboldt penguins on Penguin Island. Or take a stroll through the Ocean tunnel and check out the sharks.

Fancy trying some crabbing? Then try the rock pools up at North Bay, but remember once you catch them throw them back in for another day.

The 32-metre high wheel, on the site of the former Futurist Theatre on Foreshore Road, has been giving visitors birds-eye views of the South Bay and the North Sea for several years now and was due to be dismantled in 2020. Due to the world pandemic, the Wheel has been allowed to stay in place until the end of the season in 2023.

The newly named Royal Albert Park overlooks the spectacular North Bay and contains some delightful coastal walks and natural areas.

Plans are currently underway to improve this park with a new play area, extended skateboard park, viewpoints and picnic areas.

Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre was built in the 1930s in Northstead Manor. Since its refurbishment in 2010, the theatre has hosted some of the music and entertainment industries’ greatest stars including Elton John, Britney Spears, Gary Barlow, Kylie, Noel Gallagher, Lionel Richie, Nile Rodgers & CHIC, Little Mix, Lewis Capaldi and many more.

The Rotunda was opened in 1829 and was one of the world’s first purpose-built museums. The Georgian gallery has a mural that showcases the geology of the North Yorkshire coastline and the original museum showcases exploring the 19th-century societies that created the Museum.

Oliver’s Mount

Oliver’s Mount, named after Oliver Cromwell, is the only public roads circuit in England and its origins stem from when some local entrepreneurs recognised the ‘feel-good factor in the UK after the end of World War Two and decided the ideal way to welcome home the troops would be to host a race meeting.

Oliver’s Mount is an area of high ground overlooking  Scarborough ,  North Yorkshire , England. It offers views over the town, a tribute monument to the war dead, camping and camping spots at selected times of the year, 10 football pitches, 1 rugby league pitch. Oliver’s Mount first held a motorcycle race in 1946, and it continues to hold motorcycle circuit racing today, and also holds car rallies and car hill-climb events. Cars have raced here twice, in 1955 and 1956.

Scarborough Pier Lighthouse is an active aid to navigation on Vincent Pier in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, owned and operated by Scarborough Borough Council. The lighthouse dates from 1806, but it had to be rebuilt following damage sustained in the German bombardment of 1914. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1973 and these days houses the Scarborough Yacht Club a beautiful statue stand before the lighthouse called The Bathing Belle which commemorates the Victorian swimmers.

Hairy Bob’s Cave

The huge boulder, carved with a door and windows, stands on the resort’s Marine Drive in the shadow of the headland topped by Scarborough Castle. It was hidden for years behind a WWII tank which has now been lost to the sea. No one knows who built or rather carved the cave or why.

This is exactly my jam a market – this lovely market has just been completely overhauled and redeveloped and now features a fabulous market over 3 floors.

On the ground floor, you’ll find traditional market stalls offering an excellent range of fresh meat, fruit and vegetables, bread, cheese and unique local shops as well as a café and deli, selling freshly-cooked snacks and meals.

Up in the gallery, you will find a great range of quirky, individual shops selling hand-made crafts, jewellery, food and more. The gallery also has two cafes where you can enjoy freshly-prepared food and drinks whilst enjoying a great view up to Scarborough Castle or the hustle and bustle of the market below.

In the ‘vaults’ you will come across an Aladdin’s cave of unique jewellery, gifts, crafts, collectables, clothes, toys, books and loads, loads more – an eclectic mix of individual shops you won’t find anywhere else! ‘The vaults’ also has its own café, tucked away in the corner for freshly-prepared snacks and meals.

Everyone knows the old song Are you going to Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel but it is an old English folk song. The Scarborough Fair Collection and Vintage Transport Museum located between Scarborough and Filey on the picturesque coast road, proudly showcases a remarkable assortment of vintage cars, steam engines, vintage fairground rides, and mechanical organs. The collection is brought to life as the vintage vehicles and fairground rides, including a magnificent Wurlitzer Organ.

Spoiled for choice is an understatement when it comes down to the best seafood dishes in Scarborough – after all, it’s a fishing harbour. So here are a few of the best.

Fish & Chips in Scarborough

Number #1 in Scarborough is the Lifeboat Fish bar Lifeboat Fish Bar in South Bay is a cosy, family-run cafe serving traditional British fish and chips. Portions are generous, and you can choose from either cod or haddock, which come scalding hot in a crisp batter. The chips are always perfectly cooked – fluffy inside and crispy on the outside, and not at all greasy.

Number #2 is Papas Fish and chips which is located in the centre of Scarborough’s south bay beachfront, papa’s makes for the ideal location to enjoy a meal with friends and family.

A cosy brasserie in the heart of Scarborough where you can savour 6-course tasting menus for excellent value. ‘Taste of Yorkshire’ menus are prepared with locally sourced ingredients. A meal at this brasserie is sure to please most palates, including vegans, vegetarians and those on gluten-free diets.

A fabulous medieval-themed pub that’s a short walk from the town centre and famous castle.  All the food is freshly cooked and includes locally sourced fish, steak pie, burgers, and spinach and ricotta cannelloni. For drinks, you can choose from real ales, bottled and draught beers, cocktails and gins There’s live entertainment on most Saturday nights.

This Italian restaurant has a long history in Scarborough and was founded in 1973, The restaurant serves a more refined form of Northern Italian cuisine like risotto, handmade egg pasta, meat dishes and La Lanterna’s speciality: truffles.

Scarborough’s historic harbour is the soul of this town and a stroll along the marina to admire the pretty coloured houses overlooking the sea is a must-do.

Steeped in history, Scarborough’s Old Town is nestled behind the harbour. The area is a maze of cobbled winding streets and alleys lined by a selection of charming houses, quaint shops and cafés and lovely pubs and inns. Walking around this part of town is certainly a treat for the eyes, with little boutiques selling unique finds and local specialities.

But undeniably, the highlight of the sanctuary is the seal hospital with its adorable patients receiving treatment on-site. 3. Explore the Rotunda Museum

As one of the oldest purpose-built museums still in use in the United Kingdom, the Rotunda Museum features an interesting collection of artefacts covering the ancient history of the area, including fossils found on East Yorkshire’s Dinosaur Coast and the remains of the Gristhorpe Man, which dates back to the Bronze Age.

In the Ancient Seas of the Yorkshire Coast, visitors get to discover the fascinating creatures that used to populate the area through fossils and reconstructions of marine life. Furthermore, the building itself is quite fascinating. Indeed, the circular, grade-II-listed building was constructed in 1829 and includes features that will surely captivate architecture fans.

4. Enjoy the views at Café View

Whether you are looking for a place for a coffee break, breakfast & brunch, afternoon tea or if you need to take refuge from the elements, pop by Café View. This lovely café boasts fantastic views as the name suggests, of the harbour, the beach and the sea. But also, a welcoming staff and a menu filled with yummy goodies and treats that makes it a favourite spot among locals and recurring visitors. 5. Enjoy fantastic views over Scarborough at the Castle

Located between North and South Bay, Scarborough Castle is a 12th-century castle overlooking the town. The medieval structure survived five sieges but was left in ruins during the English Civil War. And yet, it continues to attract visitors daily and reward them with impressive views across the town. After your visit, make your way to the nearby St Mary’s Church and its small graveyard where is buried Anne Brontë, the youngest of the famous sisters. And if you want to get spooked, take part in the ghost evening tour of Scarborough Castle, available on specific dates, including Halloween. This is a great opportunity to travel through time and hear tales of ghosts and learn more about the gruesome history of the castle and the town.

6. Take a break at Peasholm Park

Located in Scarborough’s North Bay, Peasholm Park is a great place to stop when exploring the town. The park, which was designed according to an oriental theme, has been restored to its original splendour and includes a tranquil lake where visitors can hire small rowing boats and pedalos to explore the area. There is even a small island in the heart of the lake, connected via a small bridge leading to an impressive Chinese-style pagoda.

7. Listen to the orchestra at Scarborough Spa

Built on the cliffs overlooking the beach during the Victorian era, the Scarborough Spa , despite its historical look, is fitted with modern facilities. It is also home to one of the last seaside orchestras in the country, which plays classical music just like during the town’s glorious past when visitors were flocking to Scarborough to experience the healing properties of the waters.

8. Catch a show at the Stephen Joseph Theatre

Despite its quiet atmosphere, Scarborough has quite a lively theatre scene. Indeed, the town boasts several great venues, including the Stephen Joseph Theatre . With its convenient location near the Scarborough Spa, the theatre showcases a combination of classic and modern shows.

The venue also includes a small art gallery and a bar on-site, while numerous restaurants are located nearby. The theatre also shows classic movies and sometimes even streams major events on a big screen.

The complex includes a wide collection of arcade games on the ground floor, including penny pushers, slot machines, video games and children rides while upstairs, the bowling alley with its 12 lanes and the go-kart track is perfect for teens (and adults too). 11. Scarborough Market Hall

Recently renovated, the Scarborough Market Hall is another interesting place to visit. This historic market hall is a great place to score fresh vegetables and fruits, bread and other goodies, but also for a nice lunch or coffee too. The market also hosts pop-up stalls and special events at the mezzanine level, which makes it a must-visit destination all year round.

Don’t miss the chance to visit the vaults too, where you will be able to roam through shops selling a plethora of things, from antiques and crafts, books, jewellery and even clothes.

12. Grab some Fish and Chips at Lifeboat Fishbar

A must-visit fish and chips spot in Scarborough is undeniably Lifeboat Fishbar . This small fish and chip cafe is conveniently located off the waterfront, a few meters from, you guessed it, the lifeboat station.

The family affair is known for its welcoming and friendly service and delicious fish. You can eat inside or take it away. In fact, we definitely recommend you pop by, order and take your meal away to enjoy on the beach. Because why not…

Scarborough is blessed with several beaches, with South Bay Beach (or South Beach) being the busiest of them all. And for good reasons. Sheltered from the north thank to the castle, the beach is blessed with soft sand, calm and clean waters and is easily accessed from the town centre.  A variety of shops and businesses and entertainment are available as well, including donkey rides. That being said, it is North Beach that has earned the Blue Flag title. In fact, unlike South Beach, the beach here is away from the road and features a chalet-lined promenade leading to the Sea Life Sanctuary. Low tide is the perfect moment to explore rock pools though caution is needed as the tide rises rather quickly.

For those looking for more tranquil areas, Cayton Beach is perfect, with its lush woodland and serene waters. For even more isolation, Cornelian Bay Beach is what you need, nestled somewhere between South Bay and Cayton Bay. Nick Schroeder, 42, of Portland, is communications manager and multidisciplinary programmer for Space, a nonprofit arts venue in Portland. He’s also an actor, director and ensemble member with Mad Horse Theatre Company in South Portland. A native of Old Orchard Beach, he’s worked as a journalist and editor at several local publications.

As much as I like bopping around the state by myself, I’ll spend my perfect Maine day with my partner, Mallory, and our nearly 3-year-old toddler. The kid’s in the stage of life where she asks why to just about everything, and that question makes for good conversation.

Getting dressed (finding pants, socks, etc. and negotiating their deployment) can take a while in my house, so we’ll put on WMPG to keep the energy loose. I’ll pour a good cup of coffee, Speckled Ax Early Riser preferred , in my clunky travel mug. Then we’ll get things cracking at that one real good climbing tree in the park for a little proprioceptive rinse. The branches are real low to the ground and I don’t have to worry about my kid taking any nasty falls.

Will Zu Bakery still have croissants by now, or is that too much morning meandering? The neighbors tend to swarm the little West End spot – how is it this good? – and it can quickly sell out. If that’s the case, we’ll drive south. Actually, scratch that – Mallory will drive this leg, and I’ll bike. Our destinations will be the same, Palace Diner (in Biddeford). I’ll have the omelet du jour and those great big potatoes, and maybe a bite of my kid’s pancake – the dad handbook clearly states that you must eat your children’s leftovers. We’ll all poke our heads inside Biddeford Vintage Market and see what new vendors they’ve got (my aunt Barb runs the place with some friends) before making a quick spin into Color.Sound.Oblivion to check their newly stocked records.

With family who live nearby, I’ll be able to ditch the bike and hop into the car, heading north. We’ll stop in Portland to grab a couple of arepas for the road from the outrageously good Colombian food restaurant Maïz, and head to South Paris. In this fantasy, the Celebration Barn has a perfectly timed matinee show, and true to form, it’s equally enchanting for kids and adults.

After that, we’ll drive to Rockland (here’s where the kid naps) and head to a beach (any beach) before I pop into Curator , one of few consignment shops that bothers to stock nice stuff for tall fellas. Then it’s over to Rock City Cafe for a refill and a poke around Hello Hello Books behind the cafe. Last time, I found a nice used paperback of a Judy Chicago biography. Will I get this lucky again?

Returning to Portland, we’ll have had our fill of driving and Raffi sing-alongs. It’s time for our A-list East End retail trifecta – Ferdinand  for handmade wonders, Starry Eyes  for snazzy kids’ stuff, and Print: A Bookstore (more books!).

For dinner, the ideal is Asmara , the great Eritrean gem, where we as a family can share big communal plates of colorful food using only our hands as utensils. After we put the kid to bed, I’ll text a friend, and if his kid’s asleep, too, we can sneak out for a little nightcap at the Continental and discuss the news.
