What You Need to Know About the Qantas Walkabout Air Pass

The Qantas Walkabout Air Pass is the Ultimate Ticket to Australia

Qantas isn't kidding around with this pass! It's the best way to see more of Australia, especially if you don't want to spend too much time travelling from one destination to the next.

We tell everyone that comes to visit us about the Qantas Walkabout Air Pass.

With this air pass you can book up to six domestic flights at the same time you book your international flight.

It doesn't matter if your travelling from the States or the UK, the pass can be used by anyone as long as it includes an international flight.

The pass takes some planning, so be sure to check out the website and give them a call if you have to. I know calling an airlines is not something anyone looks forward to but to make sure your air pass is properly sorted out it might be best to talk to an actual person. Plus they have suggestions for what to do and when is the best time of year to go where.

What's Included in the Qantas Walkabout Air Pass

Qantas has the largest domestic airline network in Australia due to the inclusion of the Jet Star network. Twenty-seven Australian cities are included in the Walkabout Pass and are divided into three zones.

And get this, it includes NEW ZEALAND!

I know. It just got better. Seriously, I'm jealous.

With the inclusion of New Zealand, that makes four zones total. You might find it hard to stick to just six flights.

Above are all the direct flights you can book from Sydney. There's no way you're flying all the way to Australia and NOT going to Sydney, right?

Customise Your Trip with the Qantas Walkabout Air Pass

The Walkabout Pass allows you to customise your trip with the multi-city booking engine. As I mentioned above, you can include up to six flights.  

The only catch is you must book your Walkabout Pass at the same time you book your Qantas international ticket. You cannot book your international flight then decide that you want to add on a Walkabout Pass. So before you get online to book your flight to Australia, think about where else you want to go.

You should also be aware that there are zone fares for every sector of the flights.

For example, say you would like to fly from Uluru (Ayers Rock) to Melbourne but the booking engine does not have any direct flights. The only flights available go through Sydney. This means zone fares for each leg of the flight, from Uluru to Sydney and from Sydney to Melbourne, will apply.

This is what I mean by it takes some planning ahead of time as the more direct flights you book the less the cost of the pass.

Here's a Few Suggestions on Where to Go

Obviously I'm bias and think that Sydney is a must see destination that has to be included in your pass. Starting with Sydney, we have a few suggestions on where to go with your Walkabout Pass.

Wine Tour of Australia

• Starting Point (ie where you call home)
• Sydney – Day trip to Hunter Valley . Be sure to try Hunter Valley's white wines not just Shiraz. The Semillon Sauvignon Blanc;blends are very nice.
• Perth – Two day wine tour of Margaret River
• Adelaide – One or two days touring Barossa Valley , famous for Shiraz. It's a good idea and just plain fun to rent bikes in the valley. That way you avoid driving when drinking 'cause trust me, you're going to be drinking.
• Melbourne – One day trip to Yarra Valley and one day trip to Mornington Peninsula . Both areas are famous for Pinot Noir

Australian Icon Tour

• Starting Point
• Sydney – Tour the Opera House , or even better, see an event at the Opera House. Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge .
• Uluru (Ayers Rock) – Best to go during winter (June or July). Sunrise or Sunset tours of Uluru are breathtaking.
• Cairns – Go snorkelling or diving at the Great Barrier Reef.
• Melbourne – Tour the Great Ocean Road . The helicopter tour over the Twelve Apostles is pretty cool but kind of scary. Not scary because of the helicopter but because of the price tag.
• Back Home – Sleep for a few days because you're going to be tired after a trip like this.

Australian Animal Lovers Tour

• Sydney – Taronga Zoo is a great zoo. There is also Featherdale but I won't recommend it. I would also skip the Sydney Aquarium. Instead plan a day trip to the Central Coast where you'll see Dolphins at Nelson's Bay and you might be lucky and see a few koalas.
• Brisbane – Cuddle a koala at the Koala Sanctuary .
• Adelaide – Kangaroo Island is all about wildlife. Try and spend a whole day there.
• Melbourne – Penguin Parade is a must plus you'll see Mornington Peninsula which is beautiful.
• Back Home – If you even back it back home because after you've cuddle your first koala you won't want to leave.

The Qantas Walkabout Air Pass is a great way to see a lot of Australia for less.

Play around with the booking engine and see where you can go and what the cost will be.

• More than one change allowed without an additional collection, including penalty or change fee within the Travel Notice dates
• Original issuing agency responsible for ticket reissue
• Ticket Revalidation not permitted
• The return travel must be booked in the original class of service (inventory)

• Basic Economy must be rebooked in the appropriate Basic Economy inventory

If customers are unable to rebook within the New Travel Dates, may reschedule their reservation to/from the same city or alternate cities and reissue their ticket with the below guidelines:

• Cancel their itinerary and apply the value of the original ticket towards the purchase of a new ticket for travel commencing within 1 year from the date of original issuance
• Change fee only is waived as long as the original ticket is reissued within ticket validity and the impact dates are in accordance with those identified in the Travel Notice
• Basic Economy fares may only be used towards the purchase of other Basic Economy fares.
• Residual MCO's are not allowed when using the TNADVE waiver code for reissue.
• Extend Travel Rebooking does not apply to tickets in conjunction with Instant Upsell (IU)

Refund Policy Information

When the flight is cancelled or the length of delay is 91+ minutes , travel agents may refund ticket(s) through normal GDS/ARC/BSP processing. Refer to our Schedule Irregularity policy for delays 90 minutes or less.

• Refund To Original Form Of Payment - All penalties/fees waived
• Non-Refundable Fare
• Refundable Fare with cancellation Fee
• Basic Economy Fare
• Bulk/Opaque Fare

Note: If the ticket has been exchanged by American as an INVOL submit the refund request directly with American. Refer to American Airlines Refunds .

When the flight is not cancelled or the length of delay is 90 minutes or less , a refund does not apply:

• If customer elects to cancel their reservation and use the value of the ticket toward the purchase of a new ticket outside the Travel Notice dates; may use Extend Travel Rebooking or may hold ticket for future travel; all rules and restrictions apply.
• Travel must commence no later than one year from the date of original issuance.

En route/Diversion

• Connecting customers' en route to one of the above-listed destinations or whose flights are diverted will have the option to return to their original departure city and rebook travel to alternate future dates.
• Customers should work directly with the airport to obtain a boarding pass for return travel to their original departure city. If the customer wishes to rebook travel to alternate future dates, please contact American Airlines Reservations for assistance. Alternatively, they may receive a refund if re-accommodation options are unacceptable.
• If a ticket has already been reissued by American Airlines or the ticket is partially used, travel agents must submit the refund request online at https://prefunds.aa.com/refunds/

Why Qantas is flexing its muscles on the Tasman

Qantas will pass rival Air New Zealand with seat capacity out of Christchurch with new flights from later this year as it builds connections to its growing long-haul network.

The Australian airline already outstrips Air New Zealand for international seats out of Wellington and its head of international says more flights could be on the way.

“We are flying more people across the Tasman than we did pre-Covid with up to 180 return flights each week. We’ll continue to look for opportunities to grow it further where there is demand,“ said Cam Wallace, head of Qantas international and freight and a former Air New Zealand executive.

His airline is adding more transtasman flights in response to strong demand from customers travelling to New Zealand.

From late October it will add up to 260,000 additional seats across three of its transtasman routes over 12 months, compared to its current schedule.

The changes represent an almost 50 per cent increase in capacity across the three routes and a 7 per cent increase for Qantas’ broader transtasman network and follow other recent network additions including the launch of Wellington-Brisbane late last year.

• Christchurch-Brisbane: flights to increase from daily to between 10 to 12 per week from late October, adding up to 1700 seats on the route each week.

• Christchurch-Melbourne: flights to increase from daily to 12 per week over the December/January peak and continue between 10 to 12 per week through 2025, adding up to 1700 seats on the route each week.

• Wellington-Melbourne: flights to increase from daily to 10 per week between September 2024 and April 2025, adding up to 1000 seats on the route each week. All three routes are operated with the airline’s Boeing 737 aircraft.

“We’ve been growing our transtasman network over the last six months with new routes, larger aircraft and more flights to support sustained demand,” Wallace said.

“These additional flights will see us operate almost double daily services from Melbourne and Brisbane to Christchurch, offering business and leisure customers more choice in the time of day they’d like to travel.“

Qantas is adding new Airbus A220s to its fleet to replace its Embraer aircraft which would give it scope to expand into other New Zealand airports, when it has enough of the new planes and if there is sufficient demand.

Christchurch Airport’s general manager of aeronautical development, Gordon Bevan, said Qantas and Air New Zealand’s capacity to the main centres in Australia was close before the latest announcement.

“They were like for like so this really puts Qantas ahead on capacity.“

Qantas also had a joint venture with Emirates which operates an Airbus A380 to Sydney (and beyond to Dubai) daily providing even more seats.

Qantas and Air New Zealand approached the transtasman differently.

Bevan said Air NZ concentrated on taking passengers between Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane whereas Qantas had a bigger outlook.

More than half of Qantas passengers were connecting beyond the gateway cities.

“From the lens that Qantas looks at through it is not so much about how we’ll get more people to Sydney. It’s how we’ll get more people on the Qantas network,“ he said.

While Qantas would have more seats that didn’t mean the gateway cities would grow commensurately in size.

“For us, that’s really important because you don’t want 100 per cent of the seats dedicated to just take people to Sydney and also we need those pipelines to our growth market because it’s what sits at the other end of the pipeline of interest to us.“

This allowed better connections to Qantas’ long-haul market into Asia and Europe.

“That’s what Qantas is developing rapidly and that determines the timeline on when they’ve launched these services (to Christchurch). Since the end of Covid restrictions, Qantas are block by block building back their long-haul network and reaching a point now where they’re confident enough to put in the Christchurch block to connect with it.“

Bevan said Qantas had been in the market for decades, and knew what Christchurch was capable of.

There were more visitors to the city for special events now it had largely been rebuilt after the earthquakes with its Te Pae convention centre a drawcard and the new indoor stadium Te Kaha on track to open in 2026.

“All of the the reasons for travel will be in place. These are structural changes,“ he said.

Christchurch Airport had enjoyed a strong summer with United Airlines beginning seasonal services from San Francisco and Cathay Pacific resuming after a Covid-19 enforced pause.

Qantas is also flying more than Air NZ to Wellington.

Before the latest announcement Qantas group, including Jetstar, had 54 per cent of international capacity out of Wellington versus 41 per cent for Air New Zealand, with the airport’s remaining international flights operated by Fiji Airways.

Air New Zealand is facing fleet problems with up to five of its A320/21 fleet grounded at any time because of Pratt & Whitney engine issues. It has canned Auckland-Hobart services over winter and its domestic capacity has been crimped, helping its strategy of raising prices to fly around the country as it faces a tough second half of the financial year.

Do I need to be travelling with Qantas to access The Qantas Club lounge?

Qantas Club members may access the  Qantas Club  lounge in the departure port when your next onward flight on that day is on a Qantas or Jetstar fight number.

• As part of your membership you may bring one guest to join you in a qantas Club lounge.
• Your accompanying guest must be travelling on a Qantas, Jetstar, one world or eligible partner marketed and operated flight on the same day.
• Individual members may also purchase an Annual Guest Card , which allows one additional guest access to The Qantas Club
• Upon arrival at The Qantas Club, you must present your Qantas Club, Platinum or Gold Frequent Flyer card together with your ticket or boarding pass for onward travel that day.
