Ellie Weiler bounces back from torn ACL to win Revolution Tour

News News | Mar 6, 2021

Frisco snowboarder Ellie Weiler battled through snowy conditions on Thursday, March 4, to capture the Revolution Tour Copper Mountain and overall Rev Tour women’s snowboard slopestyle championship.

The accomplishment capped a comeback two years in the making for the Team Summit rider who’s recovered from a torn ACL and medial meniscus. With an 85.25 on the Woodward Copper slopestyle course Thursday, Weiler secured her first Rev Tour gold medal after previously medaling twice at Rev Tours two years ago.

“It obviously means a ton to me,” Weiler said Friday. “I try and be the hardest worker I can be because I can’t control what other people are doing. A lot of people look and say, ‘That person did this. I have to change my run.’ But sticking and focusing on yourself and what you can control will result in the best situation. It’s about working hard, even if that’s not the funnest thing to do.”

Weiler said she came into training this year with a vengeance after a more relaxed approach in her first season recovering from the torn ACL in 2019-20. When the pandemic began last March and shut down snowboarding, Weiler said she realized a sense of urgency was needed for her recovery. She said she learned “there may not be a tomorrow to try things.”

During the recovery, Weiler experienced physical self-doubt, something that hadn’t happened with previous injuries. That’s because she rode for weeks in 2019 following the ACL tear without knowledge the injury was as serious as it was.

Support Local Journalism

Weiler continued to compete in the 2019 USA Snowboard and Freeski Nationals thinking the swelling in her leg was a sprain. Once doctors alerted her to the severity of the situation, she started the recovery process.

Since then, she’s blossomed into a rider who’s now better than she was before the injury, including landing a switch (riding with opposite foot forward) 540-degree spin rotating to her board’s backside on the slopestyle course’s first jump Thursday. Then, on the course’s third jump, Weiler landed what’s becoming a trademark trick for her: a tucknee wildcat backflip where she grabbed her board so well the tail hit her head.

r.ev tour

Weiler landing the tricks on the jumps-first course set her up well for the rails to follow. Weiler’s familiarity with the course from practicing there with Team Summit fueled her confidence heading into a contest that was once slated for Park City snow.

“I like rails at the end of the course just because I know what speed I need to take into the jumps,” Weiler said. “And with the rails at the end, it doesn’t matter if I bobble one of the rails. It’s the end of course, as opposed to the rails being at the beginning and the whole run could be thrown off.”

Weiler said she’s not sure what the Rev Tour result might mean for her in terms of earning a spot on the U.S. Snowboard Rookie Team for slopestyle or World Cup spots in general. For now, she hopes the accomplishment — and her likely bumping up from 58th into the 40s in the World Snowboard Points List Ranking — gets her an invite to Land Rover Grands Prix and World Cups next year. She won’t compete at the Grand Prix in Aspen later this month unless another invitee drops out.

r.ev tour

What is the Future Tour?

The Futures tour was created in partnership between USASA and US Ski & Snowboard to provide a step in between USASA regional and FIS national level events. FIS events are held for athletes who have shown best in class performance at the USASA National Championships and are prepared to enter a National level FIS competition. These athletes should be competing 5-7 times a season in USASA regional events or have an existing FIS point profile progressing to gain access to the Rev Tour, World Cups and Elite level events.

How do I advance to the REV Tour?

There are currently three main pathways to the Rev Tour. The FIS ranking list (20), USASA National Championships Open Class (10) and the Futures Tour (6). The combined results from the upcoming 23/24 Futures Tour will award positions (TBD) for the 24/25 RevTour based on the best two avg. over four stops from Futures 23/24.

Why the pre qualification for Futures Tour for the 2024 season?

Adding the pre qualification criteria to this year's events guaranteed the top level athletes from the USASA National Championships access to Futures tour stops. This criterion was a welcome addition that has secured the rights to compete for those who have earned their way through elite level performances at the national level.  While this tightened the open entry the goal was to secure those best in class performances from the 2023 National Championships.

2024-2025 Season Outlook

For the 24/25 season we will be instituting a full qualification criteria that will reserve all positions for the top athletes from the USASA Year End National Ranking (YENR). This criteria will be released before the first Futures tour event and will include an updated YENR algorithm that will encompass both the 23/24 National Ranking at the end of the qualification period combined with the results of the USASA National Championships.

2024-2025 Criteria HERE

r.ev tour

USASA and FIS Memberships are Required

Domestic competitors are required to have current USASA, US Ski & Snowboard, and FIS membership in order to register for a competition.  You will not be able to register online if you do not already have an active membership for each - USASA, US Ski & Snowboard, and FIS . The FIS minimum age for entry into the contest is 13 for freestyle events. All adult members (18 and over) must clear a background screen and pass Safe Sport education protocols prior to registering for the event through US Ski& Snowboard. The competition will be scored as an open age group for FIS results and in individual age classes for the USASA results awarding both regional and national points.

To register for the Futures tour events, find the event you would like to sign up for on the regional calendar and register. For the special registration period beginning Nov1 at 1 pm EST- Nov 14 only those eligible via the PQ criteria can enter.  The list of eligible athletes for Freeski and Snowboard can be found by clicking on your sport.

Open Event Registration-November 15th, 1pm EST.

Following the Pre-qualification two week period, all unsecured positions will be released to the general public. The remaining entries will be filled in first come/served order and once capacity is met athletes will be offered the opportunity to secure a position on the waitlist.

PRE-QUALIFICATION ENDS AND GENERAL REGISTRATION OPENS NOVEMBER 15th at 1 pm ET.

As of 1 pm ET Wednesday, November 15th, public registration opens for Futures Tour competition. If you are one of the pre-qualified athletes, you're early-registration privileges expire at 12:59 pm EST on November 15th. Pre-qualified athletes may still be able to secure a spot in the general registration period until field quotas are filled. All events will be capped at 80 Men/40 Women to ensure the highest level of athlete experience for the Futures Tour.

TO REGISTER FOR FUTURES TOUR:

  • Athletes 13-17 years old must be active USASA members and have a current FIS membership. Your FIS ID can be purchased with US Ski & Snowboard here.
  • Athletes 18+ must hold current USASA, US Ski & Snowboard, and FIS memberships in order to register. If you are over 18 and have not yet completed all compliance requirements you will not be eligible to register.

  • Snowboard Pre-Qualified List

Futures Tour 2024 Updated screenshot

  • Will be given up to two weeks prior to the first TCM meeting, no other refunds will be issued after this time.

Points and Ranking

  • Athletes will receive USASA Regional and National Ranking points in your age group and FIS points. The competitions will be scored on an open range and then age group points will be assigned for the USASA result. The FIS result will not reflect age groups. All results will also be scored on the WSPL.

FIS rules will be followed and USASA rules respected. Final formats will be determined at the TC meeting prior to the competition. All athletes must be represented at the TC meeting.  Coaches are required to have a membership with both USASA and US Ski and Snowboard

  • Who should sign up for these competitions? The competitions are open to those with both USASA, and US Ski & Snowboard memberships and are holding a valid FIS license who are 13 by December 31, 2023 for freestyle events. However, athletes should consider if they are ready to step up to an open style format with bigger features and a higher level of difficulty. Practices are typically shorter and the courses are more demanding.
  • How do I get into the Futures Tour? There are two ways into the Futures Tour. Compete in USASA National Championships to earn a PQ position into the Futures tour, or you can enter or through the Open registration period. ( Click here for PQ criteria )
  • How do I qualify for the USASA National Championships.  It all begins with your regional USASA events. You can win the series or gain entry via the National Ranking. Futures competitions serve as both USASA qualifiers and also allow athletes to stay in their age group and begin to work on their FIS point profile and try to earn an entry t o Rev Tour.
  • Do I have to move to Open Class? No, you do not, you should stay in USASA age class and compete in age class at National Championships. These Futures Tour competitions have no bearing on movement up to Open class and will help you earn FIS points to move onto bigger competitions in the future. If you want to compete in the USASA Open class at National Championships you will have to choose either age class or Open, but may not do both.
  • Where do I register? You register at www.usasa.org and find the competition in each series where they are represented. You must sign up for each competition separately.
  • What if I am an international competitor? Registration will be sent through your NGB by submitting the official inscription to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. no less than 2 weeks prior to the competition. Additionally, you must pay a one time international admin fee of $15 (see how here) and each competitor must register for the competition in advance online.
  • How do I get into the Rev Tour?  You can find the full  criteria here:

Futures Tour events are operated independently by USASA Regional Series and sanctioned by USASA and FIS in coordination with US Ski & Snowboard.

2023-2024 Season Update

The Futures Tour was born from a desire to create a bridge between regional and national competition. Over the last five years the Futures Tour has grown into the premier stepping stone for the future of snowboarding and freesking. Presented by USASA and elevated in experience through shared partnership with U. S. Ski & Snowboard, the Futures Tour is the future of Snowboarding and Freesking. We are excited to announce a pre-qualification criteria that will ensure the top athletes access through a two-week restricted registration window. This adjustment highlights the success of the top athletes and also aligns with new Revolution Tour criteria.

“ We wanted to be sure that the top performers from USASA Nationals were recognized and have the opportunity to secure entry. This is the natural progression of our sports and rewarding the top competitors, while still maintaining an open entry period for all, lines up perfectly with our mission. ” - Mike Mallon- Executive Director/USASA

Beginning this year, athletes’ top two (2) Futures tour results will be averaged to create an invite list to the 24/25 Revolution Tour. It is important to note that with this change there will no longer be in season progression to the Revolution Tour from the Futures Tour for 2023/24.

“It has been exciting to see the success of the Futures Tour events. Based on feedback from athletes, coaches, and parents we know that athletes need more time at the Futures Tour level to develop foundational skills and tricks prior to moving on to the Revolution Tour. This new qualification pathway will give athletes the opportunity to better plan for their season, without last minute adjustments to try and accommodate the in season move ups which put strain on the athletes, families and teams. We are also hopeful that this will reframe the athletes’ focus to really hone in on spinning all directions, good edge control, as well as developing a variety of grabs and style within their tricks.” - Ashley Deibold, U. S. Ski & Snowboard, Director of Development Snowboard and Freeski

Pre-Qualification- YENR -M43/W23 (two week secured registration period)

Criteria A- The top 10 Men and 5 Women from the USASA Year End National Ranking (YENR) rankings in Halfpipe and Slopestyle in Breaker, Youth, Junior and Open Class.

Criteria B- The top 3, 13+(DOB 2010) age eligible with Menehune Men and Women from the USASA Year End National Ranking (YENR) rankings in Halfpipe and Slopestyle.

Criteria C - Petition To Start. If an event has reached capacity, athletes who are not able to secure entry due to medical injury or illness, may submit a Petition. Each appeal will be reviewed by the Futures Tour Appeals Review Committee. Petition form is here.

Pre-qualification Registration Procedure November 1-14

All PQ athletes from the YENR will have an exclusive opportunity to secure their placement in Future Tour Events. Following this time frame, all unfilled positions will be released to the general entry for the event.

Athletes will register though their USASA profile and must be valid and hold current USASA, U. S. Ski & Snowboard and FIS memberships in order to register. If you are over 18 and have not yet completed all compliance screens you will not be eligible to register and will forfeit your position on the PQ list.

Following a two week Pre-qualified athlete registration period, the remaining Futures tour registration will be open to all members. All events will be capped at 80/40 M/W to ensure the highest level of athlete experience for the Futures Tour. Spots will not be handed down and no other Pre-qualifications will be considered.

Athletes must be valid and hold current USASA, US Ski & Snowboard and FIS memberships in order to register. If you are over 18 and have not yet completed all compliance screens you will not be eligible to register and will forfeit your position on the PQ list

Waitlist Procedure

An automated online waitlist will be utilized to ensure equity in event entry.

  • Fields will be filled on a first come first served basis for US domestic athletes from the online waitlist. Athletes on the waitlist must check in at the start of the first Team Captains Meeting. (TCM)
  • All entry lists will close during the TCM the evening prior to the start of the competition.
  • To secure a position on the waitlist after the field is filled, a minimum deposit will be held and refunded if a position is not rewarded.
  • FIS foreign competitors and international quotas will be observed.

Refunds will be permitted up to two weeks prior to the event. No other refunds will be given under any circumstances inside a two week timeframe of the competition.

Tour Standings

For the 2023/24 season, Future tour results will be ranked based on a best two results averaged WC (100) point scoring scale to create a tour overall ranking list that will seed the 2024-2025 Revolution Tour Pre-qualifications and 2024/25 Futures tour Pre-qualification criteria. There are no in season promotions to the Revolution tour for the 2023/24 season.

Competition Schedules

Daily event schedules will be posted on USASA team app pages and at https://www.fis-ski.com.

2023 U.S Revolution Tour Returns To Copper, Aspen & Mammoth

  •   16  JAN  2023
  • Competitive

r.ev tour

U.S. Ski & Snowboard announced the return of the U.S. Revolution Tour (Rev Tour) for the 2023 season to three world-class resorts: Copper Mountain, Colo., Mammoth Mountain, Calif., and Aspen Snowmass, Colo. The Rev Tour is an annual competition tour for up-and-coming freeskiers and snowboarders in halfpipe, slopestyle and big air.

For 19 years, the Rev Tour has served as a stepping stone for athletes transitioning from competing at the grassroots level to the elite level of freeskiing and snowboarding. At each stop of the Tour, some of the world's most promising competitors have the opportunity to compete at professional-level venues and terrain parks.

To earn a spot on the Rev Tour, athletes must pre-qualify based on criteria for each contest. The Tour is focused on skiers and riders aged 13-19 years old and awards the top athletes with invitations to elite competitions, including the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix, FIS Junior World Championships and USASA Nationals, and Project Gold camps.

Competition formats vary based on location and event, but skiers and riders compete in open class unless otherwise specified. Athletes must be 13 years of age or older to be eligible to compete at the Rev Tours and athletes must hold a current U.S. Ski & Snowboard competitor membership and FIS license.

U.S. Ski & Snowboard also continues the Tour with the support of long-standing partnerships, including working with USASA and The Futures Tour, a joint venture between USASA and U.S. Ski & Snowboard. USASA provides an avenue for athletes to qualify for the Rev Tour, as well as solidify their prequalified spot for the 2023-24 season.

2023 Revolution Tour Stops

Copper Mountain – Jan. 23-27, 2023

The Rev Tour season will kick off at the Athlete’s Mountain the last week of January. Skiers and boarders will compete on venues in the Woodward Mountain Park including the large jump line in Central Park and the 22-foot Superpipe. The Rev Tour at Copper Mountain will be the first stop of the 2023 U.S. NorAm calendar for snowboard and freeski slope and pipe. Copper is the Official Training Center for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard team, facilitating training for athletes who are competing for FIS points and NorAm standings.

Aspen Snowmass – Feb. 8-14, 2023

The Rev Tour has partnered with the Aspen Open for the fourth time to host a Rev Tour at Buttermilk in Aspen, Colo. The Rev Tour at Aspen Open will kick things off with halfpipe and slopestyle contests. Athletes will compete on the X Games Aspen courses, providing a taste of what it takes to compete at top freeski and snowboard competitions.

Mammoth Mountain – March 13-18, 2023

For the third stop of the Rev Tour, athletes will travel to the west coast to compete at one of the nation’s premier ski and snowboard resorts, Mammoth Mountain. Mammoth will host contests in halfpipe, slopestyle and big air on the same course as the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix, a FIS World Cup. Mammoth Mountain has long served as a training ground for U.S. Ski & Snowboard athletes, providing world-class slopestyle, big air and halfpipe venues. This year, athletes will compete in the world-renowned Unbound Main Terrain Park and the 22-foot pro halfpipe.

Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ Is a Sprawling, Endlessly Entertaining Tour de Force: Album Review

Beyoncé beyonce cowboy carter album cover review

It sounds pretty magnificent, if a short answer is required. But if it’s genre we all really want to get into, “Cowboy Carter” sounds kinda country, and kinda not — in a way that feels wholly country. Because what is modern country music if not a cornucopia that’s a long way past being defined by a single sound? “Act II” feels a lot like a 27-course meal, difficult to describe in whole, but endlessly easy to digest, serving by serving. There are moments throughout where she’s embracing the tropes and traditions of country as we’ve known it, and just as many where you’re thinking she decided to abandon the concept, until suddenly Willie Nelson or Dolly Parton pop up for one of their intermittent spoken cameos, or there’s a fleeting Patsy Cline interpolation, and suddenly she’s veered back into C&W mode again. No one will mistake this sprawling set for ever following a straight path, or having a remotely dull moment.

It’s almost as if Beyoncé was watching some of the evolutionary leaps and hiccups country has been experiencing as it redefines its boundaries — as the music always has — and said, “Hold my Armand de Brignac. I’ve got this.”  But it’s not just a matter of what Beyoncé can do for country music; it’s what her concept of country can do for her, in expanding her musical empire and even her already well-honed sense of self. It’s a lot.

As a whole, “Cowboy Carter” is a masterpiece of sophisticated vocal arranging, laid out on top of mostly fairly stark band tracks. It’s not as if she ever laid off that great trick of her trade, even in a dance-based album like “Renaissance.” But here her brilliance at rendering self-harmonies is pushed up to the forefront in a way that might not have been as easy to focus on for a listener since Destiny’s Child covered “Carol of the Bells” for a Christmas record. It’s bliss.

Apart from these mostly common elements, the tracks almost couldn’t be more different from one another. Who knew that her exploration of Black Country would seem so much like her White Album? Or like a countrified version of Side 2 of “Abbey Road,” once the second half of this album turns into a series of short, sometimes weirder songs that have more strength as part of a dizzying medley than they might as Spotify singles. In its own fashion, “Cowboy Carter” plays as well as a smartly sequenced album as “Renaissance” did, even though that felt like a DJ club set and the new one goes harder on eclectic songcraft.

Her decision to issue “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages” as the two teaser tracks two months in advance of the album turns out to have been ideal for setting expectations for two very different sides of the record. “Texas” wasn’t shy about invoking country tropes, like line-dancing; it, along with some of the attendent pre-release imagery, made some suspicious souls wonder if this album would end up feeling like country cosplay. But then there was “Carriages,” a deeply personal ballad about her misspent youth as a budding starlet, sounding nothing like either old or new country, but married to the genre somehow just by the sound of its intricately plucked strings and storytelling.

There aren’t many moments that sell the lifestyle-branding side of country as hard as “Texas Hold ‘Em” does. (That song did its job; it’s still rising on the country airplay charts, upending some people’s initial expectations.) But of course she’s tying herself to mainstream country’s coolest elders, bringing in Willie Nelson, who does a couple of faux-DJ skits, and Dolly Parton, who brings a chuckle to a spoken introduction to Bey’s “Jolene” cover by pointing out the correlation between that classic’s auburn-haired temptress and the fabled Becky-with-the-good-hair. The Dolly homage is unquestionably the most pure country number on the album, but it’s not a completely straight take, as Beyoncé has rewritten almost all of the lyrics (and added a bridge) to make the song a fiercely protective warning instead of an endangered housewife’s plea. Taking out all the vulnerability lessens the tune a little, but it’s still a kick to hear “Jolene” with a serious infusion of “Lemonade.”

Did we mention that this murder fantasy — which starts off with a classical-sounding guitar that sounds almost fit for a Marty Robbins song — eventually winds up with Beyoncé flawlessly singing an aria from the 1700s, “Caro Mio Ben,” in Italian? It’s that kind of unpredictable album, although this at least counts as probably the strangest turn on it. Unless you count “Oh Louisiana,” a much goofier number that has Beyoncé covering a Chuck Berry oldie in a sped-up voice for a mere 52 seconds.

In evangelizing for this album, it’s hard to know whether to emphasize its weirder choices or its more conventional pleasures. There are more than enough of both of them to give “Cowboy Carter” a real sense of dynamics. But when it comes to the most straightforward material, the average listener may gravitate immediately to Beyoncé’s crowd-pleasing duet with Miley Cyrus , “II Most Wanted,” which has producer Ryan Tedder building a breezy buddyship anthem over an interpolation of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.” “I’ll be your shotgun rider ’til the day I die / Smoke out the window flyin’ down the 405,” they sing, putting the western back in country & Western. “II Most Wanted” is not the most interesting song here, but Bey harmonizes with Cyrus just as effectively as she does with herself. It’d be no surprise if their duet finds its way onto and sticks around the adult contemporary chart for about 18 months.

Sexy-time is a big thing on this album, too. Another superstar duet, “Levii’s Jeans,” has Post Malone in the role of Jay-Z. (Or at least we can surmise from other lyrics on the album that Beyoncé considers herself to have a very healthy marital relationship, physically and otherwise.) “Baby, let me rattle that snake with my venom / Denim on denim on denim on denim,” she sings, although it’s actually more lilting and gentle in tone than any saucy lyric excerpt is going to make it sound.

There are theories that “Act III” in her promised musical triptych will be a rock ‘n’ roll album. It could be wishful thinking; maybe she is saving an all-arias album for last in the trilogy. But if she is planning to rock, she gets a slight head start on it here with a couple of numbers here. “Bodyguard” is a strummed soft-rock number with a straight-up backbeat, sounding almost like a demo, in its sweet minimalism.

Later, she seriously ramps up the energy with “Ya Ya,” which brings out her Tina Turner side, and/or sounds like a “TAMI Show” outtake. “Ya Ya” risks extending itself an interpolation too far, as some iconic bass riffing from “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” is succeeded by Bey twice throwing in the hook from that famous country classic, “Good Vibrations.” On paper, “Ya Ya” is overstuffed with references, but that doesn’t really matter when you can feel the wind coming off the fringe of her miniskirt.

It takes until the 12 th song on the album — at which point, remember, we’re not halfway through — till we get the first and only real hip-hop song on the album, “Spaghetti,” which has Beyoncé rapping, ever so briefly. But it does have, yes, the barest trace of a spaghetti Western feel, which is just enough to technically tie it back to the overriding concept. It also has an introducion from Linda Martell, the first Black female star in country music (circa 1970), who gives a short homily: “Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they? … In theory, they have a simple definition, but in practice, well, some may feel confined.”

And then, after a few more essentially acoustic-based songs that pick up the tempo, there’s the final stretch of the album, where things finally get a lot looser and loopier. It may be at this late point in the album when Beyoncé loses some people. After the bonkers “Oh Louisiana” and the 1:13 paean to oral sex that is “Desert Eagle,” a few listeners might be going: What the hell was that we just heard? Suddenly, after that, it begins turning into a club album, with “II Hands to Heaven,” which has an electronic pulse we haven’t heard much of, and “Tyrant,” which flirts with trap, even though Bey is keeping the rodeo underpinnings alive with a “Giddy-up, giddy-up.”

Hearing the album finally turn into something that feels a bit closer to 2022’s “Renaissance” toward the very end could be seen as a reward for some of her faithful fans who are more into dance music for sticking through the Texas two-stepping. But in country terms, it also feels a bit like going to California’s Stagecoach Festival, where the headliner is now always followed at the end of the final night by a late-night DJ set from Diplo, since the line between line-dancing and EDM culture is being further erased these days.

Who cares if any or all of it is country or not, you might ask? Well, lots of people do — especially fellow Black artists who have a stake in how this album is received and how it might affect their futures. Martell, 82, is on board for a couple of spoken-word interludes to serve as a reminder Black country’s largely swept-under-the-rug past. But Beyoncé has brought on board here several young singers who are part of the music’s past and future, including Willie Jones, on “Just for Fun,” and Shaboozey, on “Spaghetti” and again on “Sweet Honey Buckin’,” where their interplay is as randy as the title suggests.

“You were only waiting for this moment to arrive” — that’s a key line for an album that lives up to its event status as an inherent piece of agitprop and socially significant performance art, reflecting and affecting the history of Black music and country. It obviously has been compared to Ray Charles’ landmark 1962 “Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music,” but this feels different than someone coming in and adopting the existing country songbook for their own purposes, vital as that was. Beyoncé expanding this historic catalog with her own crucial additions to it is a never-to-be-forgotten signpost, however much it does or doesn’t immediately affect the fortunes of those still trying to get a basic foothold in the genre.

And she’s not pulling this off either by unduly ingratiating herself into a scene with country customs or ignoring those hallmarks entirely. With this endlessly entertaining project, she gets to be a warrior of female and Black pride and a sweetheart of the radio. Because being Beyoncé means never having to pretend to be just one thing.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Get Loose in Los Angeles

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

Three hours into Bruce Springsteen ‘s epic return to Los Angeles on Thursday night with the E Street Band, he stared down the sold-out crowd at the Forum. “Do you have anything left?” he shouted, midway through “Twist and Shout,” the second-to-last song of his first L.A. show in eight years. Five decades in, the magic of a Springsteen show remains: He always seems to have a little bit left in the tank.

The 2024 version of the tour has been looser than last year’s, which stuck fairly close to a single set list, and Thursday was no exception. Springsteen kicked off with a true rarity, a cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” (most frequently played on the Tunnel of Love Express Tour back in 1988), before jumping into “Lonesome Day” (rarely played last year, but now a staple in the set) and “Prove It All Night,” then his live -favorite arena-rock reworking of Jimmy Cliff’s “Trapped.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Six dates into their return to the road, Springsteen and the E Street Band sounded like they had never been interrupted. “Are you having fun yet? Because we haven’t had fun yet,” Springsteen told the crowd just over an hour into his show. “This is our pre-fun. We’re here to wake you up, shake you up, and take you to higher ground. The E Street Band is here to bring the joyous power of rock & roll into your life. But we need your help. We plan on sending you home with your feet hurting, your hands hurting, your ass in paralysis, and your sexual organs stimulated.”

Springsteen maintains a remarkably simple setup and show presentation compared to the other blockbuster live shows currently on the road. The visuals are limited to video screens and elegant stage lights, keeping the focus on the 17 musicians onstage with him. He doesn’t really need much else.

Bruce Springsteen Jokes About His Postponed Tour on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'

Don omar cements his legacy with 'back to reggaeton' show in l.a., bruce springsteen joins zach bryan onstage at triumphant brooklyn show, trump says he’ll become ‘modern day nelson mandela’ over right to attack judge’s daughter, the far right is crawling with eclipse conspiracy theories, taylor swift starts countdown to ‘the tortured poets department’ with her favorite number, taylor swift soundtracks the five stages of grief with new apple music playlists.

From there, the show was all joy and catharsis, with an unbroken string of hits and live favorites, beginning with Nils Lofgren’s jaw-dropping guitar virtuosity on “Because the Night,” and inevitably reaching “Thunder Road” and “Born to Run.” As he has throughout the tour, Springsteen finished the show alone with his meditation on life after death, “I’ll See You in My Dreams.”

Springsteen and the E Street Band will play another Forum show on Sunday.
