Riverside (formed in 2001) is a Polish metal and progressive rock band, who, inspired by the likes of Pink Floyd and Marillion have managed to carve out their own prog-rock style with death metal flourishes, hailing from Warsaw, Poland.

Prior to the formation of Riverside, drummer Piotr Kozieradzki had played in the death metal bands, Dominion and Hate. Following a short drive in Warsaw with friend and guitarist Piotr Grudzinkski, in which the pair listened to Marillion, the two became inspired to combine the atmospherics of prog-rock with the intensity of metal. Kozieradzki and Grudzinkski subsequently invited producer and keyboard player Jacek Melnicki to the lineup, followed by the talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Mariusz Duda.

The group recorded their debut track, “The Curtain Falls”, in early 2002 , featuring Duda’s vocals sung entirely in Polish. Becoming more confident in his role as singer, Duda assumed both vocalist and bass playing responsibilities, and sung all of his subsequent lyrics in English. In October 2002, following a successful performance at a venue in Warsaw, the group released their debut demo untitled tape, which was limited to 500 copies. Around this time producer and keyboard player Jacek’s direction for the group diverged with the other members and by the tail-end of 2003 he departed Riverside.

The band’s debut album, “Out of Myself”, arrived in December 2013. Earning high praise from prog-rock critics and a rerelease on the American label Laser’s Edge, Riverside supported the record with an intense period of touring. With the success and exposure this afforded the group, Riverside begun work on a follow-up EP “Voices in My Head”, later playing their first international gig at the Progpower Festival in the Netherlands. In early 2005, the band signed with the major label InsideOut, who issued Riverside’s sophomore full-length “Second Life Syndrome” towards the tail-end of 2005. Garnering widespread critical acclaim and landing at No. 62 on Prog Archives’ Top 100 Prog Albums of all time, the record rose to No. 22 on the Polish Albums Chart and make significant inroads into the U.S.

The following year in 2006, Riverside performed their first U.S. show at Nearfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and begun work of their full-length follow-up. In October 2007, the studio album “Rapid Eye Movement” was released, once again on InsideOut Records. Peaking at No. 2 on the Polish Albums Chart, their highest-charting to date, the record was extolled by critics both from in and outside the prog-rock genre. Continuing to gain momentum, Riverside’s fourth full-length, “Anno Domini High Definition”, topped the Polish Album Chart upon releas in June 2009. Like its predecessor the album earned five-star reviews as well as cementing the group’s international profile. In January 2013 the group released the album “Shrine of New Generation Slaves”, which peaked at No. 2 on the Polish Albums Chart and also found the charts in Germany, Switzerland, Finland and Belgium.

Live reviews

Riverside brings you the best prog rock performance you could find in Los Angeles in the 2010s. The likes of Steve Hackett, PFM, Steven Wilson, Rick Wakeman, Opeth, Ian Anderson / Jethro Tull, The Musical Box (Genesis tribute), Anglagard, King Crimson, The Pineapple Thief, and The Aristocrats have either reach old age or are are in the upper middle age.

Thankfully, Riverside still has its youth in check while bringing you high-quality prog rock (similar to experiencing a Porcupine Tree show in the late 2000s). Unfortunately, the rest of the prog sphere's younger bands are limited to the metal variety (e.g., Fallujah, Between the Buried and Me, Ne Obliviscaris, Moonsorrow, Animals as Leaders, Wintersun, and Swallow the Sun).

It's a shame that Maschine and Wobbler don't perform around Los Angeles, since not all prog fans enjoy the metal side of prog like I do. Although I've seen Plini perform a couple of times in Los Angeles, his shows need improvements in sound quality and allotted time.

Wat een geweldige band wat een geweldige artiesten. Sta je daar te genieten komt in eens de bassist Mark Golden naast je staan ... Hoe vet is dat .. dat maak je niet mee bij bandjes als one direction hahahaha

If you love prog rock you’ll love Riverside. Saw them last night at City Stage, Sofia, Bulgaria, they’re just sheer quality. This was the first tour as a three piece since the tragic death of guitarist Piotr and was a stunning tribute him. Can’t wait until the next time!

I don't think any wine comes out of Poland, but like a fine vintage one, Riverside keep on getting better and better.

If you don't know about them, don't bother finding out, 'cos I want to make sure I can keep getting down to the front at their gigs!

The show kicked ass! Never a dull moment, the band sounded great live and they knew how to involve the crowd. The songs played were not only from Wasteland, but they played they popular songs too like Second Life Syndrome and Panic Room.

It was incredible, amazing!

Marius has a supernatural talent, he plays the bass like no other, sings at the same time with his great and sweet voice the best armony and powerful progressive rock. Its a wonderful mix.

Awesome show. Sound was amazing and Mariusz had great interaction with the packed audience. It was emotional but more upbeat than I expected. No guests - just a 2 hours journey with Riverside!

Great gig, more than 2 hours! Good sound, the setlist was mainly from wasteland and at the end they played some acoustic songs including wish you were here from pink Floyd

Prog-Rockers RIVERSIDE Announce North American “ID.Entity Tour” for February and March 2023

Poland’s pioneering and leading progressive rock band RIVERSIDE has announced their North America tour for February/Mach 2023, in support of their 8th studio album  “ID.Entity” , which will be released on January 20th, 2023 via InsideOut Music/Sony . The trek will commence on February 17th at Tampa, Florida and will finish on March 21st at Carrboro, North Carolina. The full itinerary can be seen below, and ticket will be on sale soon.

The band recently release the first single from “ID.Entity” , a track entitled “I’m Done With You”.

“ We live in times of anger and helplessness. In times dominated by Big Techs, populists, conspiracy theories, hatred, greedy corporations causing the planet and the human nature to die at an accelerated speed. We live in times when one country can attack another out of the blue just because they think they are more deserving of something. These days it’s simply hard to sing only about love, friendship and escapes into imaginary worlds. “I’m Done With You” is about an anger and frustration!” ” said RIVERSIDE ’s Mariusz Duda .

Succeeding 2018’s widely acclaimed “Wasteland” album, which entered the charts in Germany at # 13, The Netherlands at # 28, Switzerland at # 23, Austria at # 39, UK at # 83, Finland at # 30, France at # 97, Czech Republic at # 59 and Poland at # 1, their new album “ID.Entity” extends and expands RIVERSIDE ’s characteristic sound, but all in a revamped and more dynamic formula.

Recorded and mixed in two studios (The Boogie Town Studio in Otwock with Paweł Marciniak and in Serakos studio in Warsaw with Magda and Robert Srzedniccy ), the album was mastered by Robert Szydło and produced by RIVERSIDE ’s Mariusz Duda himself.

RIVERSIDE reveal revised North America tour dates for 2022 in celebration of their 20th band-anniversary.

Continuing the celebration of their 20th band-anniversary, Polish rock masters RIVERSIDE will soon embark on their North American tour. The trek is set to kick off on April 16th in Atlanta, GA and concludes following the band’s appearance on Cruise to the Edge in May.

RIVERSIDE – Announce revised North American tour dates

Unfortunately, the band have been forced to cancel some shows and are now announcing a revised, shorter tour schedule for North America.

The band shared this message:

"Dear Friends,

We have some bad and some good news.

The bad news is, for bureaucratic and logistic reasons beyond our control we cannot go to the USA in the first half of April 🙁

Unfortunately, because of that, we have to cancel the shows from the first part of our tour:

Nashville (TN), Dallas (TX), Austin (TX), Phoenix (AZ), Pomona (CA), San Francisco (CA), Portland (OR), Seattle (WA) , Salt Lake City (UT), Boulder (CO) and St. Paul (MN). Tickets will be refunded where you purchased them.

We want to apologise to everyone who has incurred additional travel expenses in connection with those concerts 🙁 We promise to make it up to you with shows in...early 2023!

The good news is that we managed to save all shows from Chicago (IL) onwards. And, we were able to save the Atlanta (GA) date by moving the show to April 16. What's more, we were able to add a last-minute show on April 18 in Cleveland (OH) at the Beachland Ballroom (on sale in the next few days)!

We are truly sorry about the whole mix-up. We were very close to cancelling the whole tour, but by some miracle, we managed to save at least a part of it, and we are definitely going to be there. We hope to meet as many of you as possible.

This brand-new track was recorded and mixed at The Boogie Town Studio in Otwock, Poland during two days in July and five days in September 2021, engineered and mixed by Paweł Marciniak as well as mastered by Paweł Marciniak at Manximum Records in Łódź, Poland.

Polish rockers Riverside are getting ready to embark on their previously announced 2022 North American tour starting next month. Unfortunately, the guys have been forced to cancel some shows and are now announcing a revised, briefer tour schedule for U.S. and Canada.

The band posted this message:

Unfortunately, because of that, we have to cancel the shows from the first part of our tour: Nashville (TN), Dallas (TX), Austin (TX), Phoenix (AZ), Pomona (CA), San Francisco (CA), Portland (OR), Seattle (WA) , Salt Lake City (UT), Boulder (CO) and St. Paul (MN).

Tickets will be refunded where you purchased them.

We want to apologise to everyone who has incurred additional travel expenses in connection with those concerts 🙁 We promise to make it up to you with shows in…early 2023!

The good news is that we managed to save all shows from Chicago (IL) onwards. And, we were able to save the Atlanta (GA) date by moving the show to April 16. What’s more, we were able to add a last-minute show on April 18 in Cleveland (OH) at the Beachland Ballroom (on sale in the next few days)!

We are truly sorry about the whole mix-up. We were very close to cancelling the whole tour, but by some miracle, we managed to save at least a part of it, and we are definitely going to be there. We hope to meet as many of you as possible.

"We're coming back!" Riverside announce UK and Ireland tour dates for May

Polish prog rockers Riverside also launch Making of ID.Entity documentary which you can watch here...

Polish prog rockers  Riverside  have announced they will tour Ireland and the UK in May this year, in support of last year's ID.Entity album.

The eight-date run kicks off in Norwich on May 12 and runs through to Manchester on May 21, and incudes a headline show at London's newly refurbished Koko venue.

"We're coming back," enthuses mainman Mariusz Duda. "We remember the fantastic shows in the UK and Ireland in the spring of 2023. Because we haven't visited the Islands too often since the Wasteland tour, we will return with our biggest UK/Ireland tour to date. We'd be very happy to meet you all (again). So before we close the chapter on ID.Entity and take a break, come join us!"

Suport on all dates comes from French prog rockers Klone , who will be presenting a special unplugged performance

"We are really happy to share the stage with Riverside on this UK/Ireland tour," adds Klone vocalist Guillaume Bernard. "We are very excited to play in great venues, like the amazing Koko in London, where we played 12 years ago with Gojira. This time we will play 'unplugged' versions of our songs, but be sure that it will sound huge and heavy!"

Riverside play Cruise To The Edge in March before touring throughout North America and Latin America. You can see the Uk and Ireland dates below. Tickets go on sale from this Friday.

The band have also launched their Making of ID.Entity documentary, directed by Marcin Zawadziński. The documentary was screened a year ago at the band's promotional meetings in Helios cinemas in Poland. You can watch the documentary below.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

We walked over the bridge where I got a better photo of the Kremlin to enter metro station to travel the one stop back to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. This cathedral has a fascinating story.  It is Moscow's largest Orthodox cathedral.  It was built between 1839-1883 as a memorial to those who fell fighting Napoleon's army in the War of 1812. 

At its entry, the marble walls are covered with inscribed names of those whose lives were lost.  For more than a century, it was the city's largest single structure, dominating the city skyline.  In 1931, a few seconds demolished what had taken 50 years to build, following Stalin's orders. 

The marble from the church and other valued materials and objects were stripped and removed to be used elsewhere, such as for creating art in the Metro stations.  During Khrushchev's time, one of the world's largest outdoor swimming pools was built. 

In recent years, the decision was made to rebuild the Cathedral; this time it took only 5 years at a cost of $150 million.  While the city provided most of the funding, when the decision to rebuild was announced, the rubles poured in from the general population.  Once again, photos were not allowed, but my friend bought a booklet, and she kindly let me use it so you can see its elaborate interior. 

What you probably DO know about this cathedral is that the Russian punk band Pussy Riot performed a protest concert inside the church in 2012, resulting in their arrest and jail time for 3 of its members.

After my friend selected her icon from the gift shop, it was time to bid our favorite Muscovite guide farewell. Our Moscow guide has restored my faith in her generation.  So wise and compassionate she is.  She was extremely perceptive about our preferences and needs. 

As my friend noted to me last night after we got back to our room, there wasn't a problem our guide didn't solve with calm and timely effectiveness.  After she presented both of us with gifts tied with satin ribbon, she walked us across the plaza in front of the cathedral to our waiting cab.  She told my friend that she reminded her of her own "Baba" and that she would send my friend a picture of her to show the resemblance. 

Even with this affection on her part toward my friend, I know our guide would have delivered the same excellent guide service to us, topped with abundant grace and sensitivity.  These characteristics are a part of her inner soul.  Our positive regard of Moscow is because of our guide.

Closure in Moscow to support MEW on September ‘Visuals’ Australian tour

MEW ‘s Visuals Australian Tour, due to land in September and presented by  Bird’s Robe  and  The Music , just got even more awesome. Melbourne’s  progressive ro ck powerhouses with a penchant for creating iconic melodies, Closure in Moscow, are today joining the tour for all dates.

The tour hits Brisbane (September 10 at The Triffid), Sydney (September 11 at Manning Bar) and Melbourne (September 12 at Max Watts), but for the first time ever, MEW will be venturing to Perth (September 13 at Capitol). It will also mark Closure in Moscow’s first Perth show in over four years.

Closure in Moscow ‘s debut record ‘First Temple’ saw them signed to Equal Vision records and tour extensively with the likes of  Coheed and Cambria ,  Dead Letter Circus ,  My Chemical Romance ,  Dance Gavin Dance ,  Fact  &  Emery . Temporarily relocating to Portland, Oregon the band repeatedly toured the US, including the  Vans Warped Tour , before returning home on the back of high rotation on  triple j  radio to headline their own shows. Further Australian, UK, Europe and Japan touring followed before the eventual release of ‘Pink Lemonade’ – a cathartic experimental concept record which has cemented their cult status as unpredictable musical chameleons.

In 2017, the band are deep into pre-production for their much anticipated third album and this September they will join prog-pop legends  MEW  for four exclusive shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Closure in Moscow will be  premiering new material live for the first time!

MEW formed as a quartet in late 1994 and following their debut ‘A Triumph for Man’ in 1997, they quickly established cult status. Their commercial break-through came in 2003 with the release of “Frengers” – showcasing their unique and quirky approach to crafting classic pop melodies. The record saw them tour with R.E.M. before continuing with 2005’s ‘And The Glass Handed Kites’.  Their 2009 opus ‘No More Stories Are Told Today, I’m Sorry They Washed Away // No More Stories, The World is Grey, I’m Tired, Let’s Wash Away’ continued their ever expansive musical backdrop. Their record “+-” saw them reach the heights of indie-rock stardom, headlining London’s Roundhouse and performing at festivals like Roskilde, Pukkelpop and Summer Sonic and one of the band’s biggest fans, Kiwi songstress  KIMBRA , brought further buzz to the band when she featured on tracks ‘The Night Believer’ and ‘Water Slides’.
